As organisations strive to comply with stringent health and safety regulations, wearable devices such as smart PPE, biometric sensors, and lone worker devices are playing a crucial role in safeguarding employees. With the ability to detect fatigue, environmental hazards, and emergency situations, wearables are reducing workplace accidents, improving response times, and enhancing overall safety culture. Here’s how organisations attending the Total Security Summit are leveraging wearable technology to strengthen health and safety strategies...
1. Smart PPE: A New Era of Protective Equipment
Traditional personal protective equipment (PPE) is evolving into connected, data-driven safety gear. Smart PPE integrates sensors, communication tools, and real-time tracking to improve worker safety. Examples include:
√ Smart helmets – Equipped with impact sensors and real-time GPS tracking, these helmets alert supervisors if a worker has suffered a fall or head injury.
√ Connected gloves – Designed with haptic feedback and temperature sensors, these gloves detect exposure to extreme heat or hazardous substances.
√ Exoskeletons – Wearable robotic exoskeletons assist with heavy lifting, reducing strain and injury risks for workers in construction and logistics. By enhancing traditional protective
equipment with real-time safety insights, organisations can proactively prevent accidents before they happen.
2. Biometric Wearables: Monitoring Worker Health and Fatigue
Worker fatigue and health issues are major contributors to workplace accidents. Biometric wearables, such as smartwatches and body-worn sensors, help monitor vital signs and physical strain in real time. Key features include:
√ Heart rate and stress monitoring –AI-powered sensors detect elevated stress levels or abnormal heart rates, prompting preventive action before an incident occurs.
√ Fatigue detection – Wearables analyse movement patterns and identify signs of exhaustion, alerting workers to take breaks when necessary.
√ Hydration and temperature tracking – Sensors embedded in uniforms or wristbands monitor body temperature and hydration levels, preventing heat stress in high-risk environments.
By integrating biometric data into health and safety protocols, employers can reduce accidents linked to fatigue and improve overall worker wellbeing.
3. Lone Worker Devices: Ensuring Safety in Isolated Environments
For employees working in remote or hazardous locations, lone worker devices provide critical real-time
safety support. Innovations include:
√ SOS alert systems – GPS-enabled devices allow lone workers to trigger emergency alerts if they are in danger.
√ Fall detection and impact sensors – Wearables detect sudden falls or impacts and automatically alert supervisors.
√ Two-way communication – Smart devices enable instant voice or text communication, ensuring lone workers remain connected to emergency responders.
Lone worker technology helps reduce response times in emergencies, providing greater protection for employees in high-risk roles.
Wearable technology is revolutionising health and safety by providing real-time insights, predictive risk assessments, and faster emergency response capabilities. By adopting smart PPE, biometric wearables, and lone worker solutions, businesses can reduce accidents, enhance compliance, and prioritise worker wellbeing. As technology advances, wearable innovations will become a standard part of workplace safety strategies, shaping the future of health and safety management in 2025 and beyond.

Simon Hinks Director PMA Ltd
Let us look at how Facial Recognition is being used today around the world for the benefit of countries and individuals.
• Look at the size of Facial Recognition and it’s growth
• Case studies, US, Singapore, China and India
• How is it being used for the benefit of users
• How ethical is it’s usage
For the last few years Simon Hinks has been working on GDPR and its implementation across businesses. This has entailed auditing, data mapping, policy writing and training of staff members and teams on how GDPR affects their day-to-day roles. He has worked across many different business sectors for both B2B and B2C. He has audited every type of business from a Musician to a Chocolate Factory to IT company and charities. He has written core training modules for the IDM (Institute of Direct Marketing) GDPR certificate which won an award. He guest lectures MA Students at the University of Pittsburgh each year as part of their course, this year he spoke of Data Ethics under a data protection framework.
Those charged with managing their organisation’s physical security face a range of complex threats – from cyber incidents and terrorist attacks to natural disasters and pandemics – that require rapid, coordinated responses. To navigate these scenarios, public and private entities must partner with the right crisis management solutions and service providers that offer robust technology integration, swift response capabilities, regulatory compliance, and scalability. Here’s how delegates at the Total Security Summit are approaching the task…
Crisis management is increasingly data-driven and real-time. The ideal partner should offer solutions that integrate seamlessly with your existing security infrastructure, including:
• Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) systems
• Incident management software
• Communication platforms (mass notification systems)
• Access control and CCTV systems
An integrated solution provides a unified view of threats, enabling security teams to respond rapidly and efficiently. Ensure that your chosen partner offers cloudbased, API-compatible systems for streamlined integration and real-time situational awareness.
When crises occur, every second counts. Your partner’s response
capabilities should include:
• 24/7 emergency response teams trained for high-pressure situations.
• AI-driven threat detection and alerting to identify risks immediately.
• Automated workflows and preconfigured action plans for different crisis scenarios. Check your provider’s service-level agreements (SLAs) for response times, ensuring they can guarantee rapid mobilisation. A strong partner will also offer real-time monitoring and remote incident support, enabling swift decisions even outside regular working hours.
3. Regulatory Compliance and Expertise
Security professionals must navigate a complex regulatory environment. Compliance with laws like the Civil Contingencies Act, GDPR, and industry-specific regulations is essential. Choose a partner that:
• Has deep understanding and experience with UK regulations.
• Offers regular training and updates to ensure ongoing compliance.
• Provides audit-ready documentation and reporting to satisfy regulatory requirements. Ensure your partner stays abreast of evolving legislation and helps you implement crisis management solutions that meet both legal and ethical standards.
4. Scalability for Different Organisational Needs
Crisis management needs vary significantly between small businesses, large enterprises,
and public-sector bodies. Evaluate partners on their ability to scale solutions based on your organisational size, structure, and risk profile. Key considerations include:
• Flexible service packages that can adjust to growth or downsizing.
• Tailored solutions to match sector-specific risks (e.g., healthcare, finance, critical infrastructure).
• Scalable pricing models, allowing you to manage costs effectively. A partner that can adapt services to your evolving needs ensures a longterm, effective relationship.
5. Proven Experience and Reputation
Finally, assess your partner’s track record and reputation. Look for:
• Client references and case studies demonstrating successful crisis responses.
• Industry accreditations from recognised security and crisis management bodies.
• Ongoing training and support to ensure your team is prepared for future incidents.
By prioritising technology integration, rapid response capabilities, regulatory compliance, scalability, and proven expertise, organisations can effectively manage risks and ensure resilience in an increasingly unpredictable world.
