Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS), the independent champion for change in construction, has completed the acquisition of the Building A Safer Future (BSF) programme.
The programme, which creates positive culture and behaviour change in building safety, was launched in response to the Grenfell Tower fire. It aims to create a more robust regulatory framework and promote a culture of safety within the built environment. The programme emphasises accountability, transparency, and the sharing of best practices to ensure that buildings are safe for occupants.
The acquisition follows the recent announcement of a partnership with compliance and risk management leader Veriforce CHAS to broaden CCS inspection monitoring services across the UK.
The work of Building a Safer Future is underpinned by a Charter which consists of five commitments. The UK Government encouraged an industry-wide commitment to sign-up to a reformed building safety regulatory system, in its response to the Building a Safer Future consultation.
In early 2020, CCS was appointed to take on responsibility for the management of the Charter. CCS subsequently established a new, not-for-profit independent organisation (Building a Safer Future Ltd) with an independent governance structure, to lead and develop the Charter further.
Whilst originally conceived to focus on high-rise residential buildings, BSF has extended
“ The programme aims to create a more robust regulatory framework and promote a culture of safety within the built environment; emphasises accountability, transparency, and the sharing of best practices to ensure that buildings are safe for occupants”.
its scope to cover buildings of all heights, and equally applies, and is relevant to, all construction activity and companies.
Companies can apply to either become a Registered Signatory of the Charter or participate in the Champions programme. The Charter is an important step in driving forwards the systemic culture change in relation to major hazard safety that is required across the built environment.
The BSF Champion assessment gives companies detailed insight into their existing leadership and culture around building safety and equips them with actionable data and practical tools to help review and upgrade processes, driving meaningful and measurable improvement in leadership and culture around building safety.
Peter Caplehorn, NonExecutive Director at Considerate Constructors, said: “The acquisition signals our continued commitment to improved safety and
standards in the construction industry. Having originally managed the Charter, CCS is the commonsense future home for the BSF business, staff and clients. While having different focal points, we share common goals around safety, collaboration and a culture of improvement.”
Graham Watts, Non-Executive Director at Building A Safer Future, said: “We look forward to developing our relationship to support companies in their building safety journeys. Our common purpose is key in helping organisations to meet their requirements, ensuring that risk profiles are reduced across the industry. As the only independent champion for change in the sector, CCS was really the only choice for us.”

personal PPMs for maximum efficiency!”
Workplace and Facilities management professionals are experienced in managing their buildings PPMs efficiently, but often don’t score as well when managing their own balance scorecard… This session will consider how to maximise efficiency in four key areas;
• Energy management – how much energy is being wasted through stress and urgency?
• Efficiency and Sustainability – are ways of working efficient, is energy being used sustainably?
• Health and safety – how much focus is there on the health side of H&S?
• Maintenance – is too much time being spent on reactive work?
Beth is leading trainer, speaker and facilitator with over 28 years of managing buildings and teams.
Prior to starting FMHS Consulting Ltd, Beth held a number of high-profile roles including Head of Facilities Management at Ascot Racecourse where she was responsible for all FM operations - the impact of the changes made were so successful, the patron at that time, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, noticed and passed comment! Beth specialises in 4 key areas; Professional Development; Facilities Management, H&S and Compliance; and Mental Health. She is an approved MHFA England Mental Health Instructor and a licensed IOSH H&S trainer and her feedback is exceptional, with learners using words like ‘inspirational, motivating, engaging and brilliant! MONDAY 27TH JANUARY
Geoff Prudence will discuss and provide thought provoking experiences on developing strategies for yourself and teams which will include:
• Overarching Business Strategies
• Your Own Development
• Your Teams’ Development
• Maintenance Strategies and Strategic Sourcing.
• Real Leadership techniques.
Leader and Director in the FM industry and particularly known for actively championing the need for effective maintenance strategies, workable designs and driving improved standards of delivery in the built environment. Led numerous industry activities, panels, boards, improvement initiatives, with 21 years as Chair of Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers - Facilities Management Group, and founder of CIBSE Fellows Network.

Navigating occupational health and safety (OHS) in 2025 isn’t just about ticking compliance boxes – it’s about creating workplaces where safety is second nature and employees feel genuinely cared for. For senior Facilities Management (FM) professionals, the challenge lies in blending rigorous compliance with a proactive safety culture. Let’s explore how you can strike that balance and lead your organisation into a safer, smarter future…
1. Keep Compliance Front and Centre (Without Losing Your Sanity)
Let’s face it: staying on top of evolving regulations can feel like juggling flaming torches. In 2025, OHS regulations are becoming stricter, particularly with the rise of hybrid work models and new environmental standards. Facilities Managers need to prioritise risk assessments, emergency planning, and compliance audits to keep their workplaces within the law.
But here’s the secret: tools like AI-driven compliance trackers and digital audit platforms can take the grunt work out of staying compliant. These technologies simplify recordkeeping, flag gaps, and send reminders that say, “Hey, you’ve got a deadline next week!”—so you can focus on more strategic initiatives (or enjoy a guilt-free coffee break).
2. Make Safety Everyone’s Business
Here’s a truth bomb: the best safety strategies are team efforts. Building a culture of safety starts with engaging employees. Instead of dry
PowerPoints that induce midmeeting naps, why not spice things up with interactive safety training or gamified learning modules?
Encourage teams to share their own safety insights and observations. A simple suggestion box—physical or digital—can reveal hazards that might otherwise go unnoticed. Celebrating “Safety Champions” each month is another great way to keep employees motivated while sprinkling some positive reinforcement around.
3. Design for Safety, Not Just Aesthetics
In 2025, workplace design is about more than cool breakout rooms and trendy plants. Facilities Managers should integrate safety features directly into the design process. From ergonomic furniture that prevents injuries to anti-slip flooring that reduces accident risks, thoughtful design choices are the unsung heroes of a safer workplace.
Bonus points if you can incorporate sustainable materials that improve indoor air quality—because nothing screams “forward-thinking” like
a space that’s both safe and eco-friendly.
4. Data: Your New Best Friend
Let data be your guiding star. Real-time dashboards and analytics tools can monitor everything from incident rates to air quality, giving you actionable insights at a glance. By harnessing the power of data, Facilities Managers can spot trends, address risks proactively, and measure the impact of their OHS initiatives.
Balancing compliance and culture might seem like walking a tightrope, but with the right tools and mindset, it’s entirely achievable. By blending technology, thoughtful design, and employee engagement, senior FM professionals can create workplaces where safety isn’t just a mandate—it’s a shared value that drives success. And hey, fewer hazards mean more time for you to shine as the safety superhero your team deserves.

Facilities Management (FM) professionals are adopting innovative fire safety & equipment solutions to enhance compliance, minimise risks, and protect assets. Stricter regulations, advanced technologies, and a greater focus on sustainability are shaping how fire safety is implemented. Here’s a summary of the biggest developments, including best practices, use cases, equipment, costs, and future outlook...
1. Best Practices: Proactive Risk Management
Modern fire safety strategies emphasise proactive risk management, integrating fire prevention into overall facility planning. Regular fire risk assessments have become more comprehensive, focusing not just on compliance but on anticipating potential hazards. FM teams are prioritising staff training, ensuring employees understand evacuation protocols and how to use fire safety equipment effectively.
Compliance with evolving regulations, such as the Building Safety Act 2022, has become a critical aspect of fire safety best practices, particularly in high-risk facilities like hospitals, schools, and residential buildings.
2. Use Cases: Tailored Solutions for Different Sectors
Different sectors require customised fire safety solutions. For example:
• Healthcare facilities use fire-resistant partitions and suppression systems tailored to protect vulnerable patients.
• Education settings prioritise wireless alarm systems to
ensure coverage across sprawling campuses without extensive wiring.
• Commercial buildings integrate fire safety with Building Management Systems (BMS) to streamline monitoring and response.
3. Equipment and Technology: Smarter Solutions
Technological advancements are revolutionising fire safety equipment:
• IoT-enabled fire detection systems now offer real-time monitoring, providing instant alerts to FM teams and emergency services.
• Wireless fire alarms have gained popularity for their scalability and ease of installation, particularly in older buildings.
• Water mist suppression systems are increasingly replacing traditional sprinklers, offering more effective fire control while minimising water damage.
AI-driven analytics are also enabling predictive maintenance, ensuring fire safety equipment is operational and reducing the risk of system failures.
4. Costs and ROI Investing in modern fire safety
equipment often involves higher upfront costs but provides significant savings in the long term through reduced risks, fewer incidents, and better compliance. Subscription-based monitoring services make advanced systems accessible to a wider range of facilities.
5. Outlook: Sustainability and Integration
Future developments will focus on sustainable fire safety solutions, such as eco-friendly extinguishing agents and energy-efficient alarm systems. Greater integration with smart building ecosystems will enable real-time, automated responses to fire incidents.
Fire safety solutions in the UK are evolving to meet stricter regulations, technological advancements, and sustainability goals. By adopting smarter, integrated, and tailored solutions, FM professionals can enhance safety, compliance, and operational efficiency, ensuring facilities are better prepared for future challenges.
