In the spirit of unity and collaboration, leaders from the London Muslim Mosque, Islamic Center of Southwestern Ontario, Muslim Association of Canada London Chapter, Muslim Youth Association of London, Bosnian Canadian Islamic Centre London, North London Islamic Center, Hyatt Mosque and AlTaqwa Academy formed a City-wide COVID-19 Muslim Organization Task Force. The mandate of this Task Force was to establish evidence based guidance and coordination of a unified response among all Muslim organizations in light of the evolving situation with the COVID-19 pandemic.

As it relates to Eid: The London Muslim institutions are pleased to announce that they have arranged a Unity Eid Virtual Celebration to take place on Sunday May 24th from 10:30 AM to 11:00 AM Insha'Allah. The way to access this event will be announced shortly, but the program will feature brief Khutbahs from Imam Dr. Amin Al-Ali and Dr. Munir El-Kassem, greetings from the various institutions, students from LIS and Al-Taqwa performing Nasheed, and greetings from some elected representatives. The institutions would like to advise that you can do Takbeer in your home the morning of Eid, and if you wish to, since it is an optional prayer, perform the two rakat Eid Salat at home prior to this event. Please do not forget to pay your Zakat-ul-Fitr before your Eid Salat, a minimum of $15 per person. The earlier the better, so that it reaches those in need.

Editor's Letter The Rewards of Eid Another Ramadan has come and gone, but this Ramadan was unlike any other in modern history. In some ways, the Covid-19 restrictions gave us a taste of how things may have been a very long time ago without many of the modern amenities we sometimes take for granted. This pandemic, in an odd way, provided us with a lesson in how things may not be as bad as anticipated and served as a reminder that Allah will test us from time to time to make sure our resolve is strong. There is no doubt that this was a hard Ramadan - no taraweeh, no iftar get togethers, social/ physical isolation preventing us from seeing family and friends, some of us playing the role of teacher at home and all while we have witnessed the news of human tragedy in our community and around the world. But, as history has shown us, our strength, resiliency and faith got us through this month and now it is time to celebrate with Eid. It is time to see some happiness, time to pat ourselves on the back for a hard month of fasting and to take the joy and reward of Eid - which will also be unique and full of historic firsts. So, with whatever restrictions are in effect, which we shall respect, let us reach out to each other in unity, in togetherness and in love as we celebrate the gift of Eid. We are so pleased to bring you this second edition of the magazine. The first publication was more successful than we could have imagined with the wide appeal, content, readership and feedback we have received from you. We are blessed to have so much talent in our community, and with that, we hope that you will enjoy this second edition.

Eid Statement Dr. Amin Al-Ali All praise is due to Allah and may the salutations and peace be upon the Messenger of Allah and those who followed him.

How quickly the days have passed. Yesterday we were welcoming Ramadan and here we are today bidding it farewell. It was a unique experience which we have never encountered before and all praise is due to Allah who altered matters so that we can experience His bounty.

Who would have ever thought that we would be blocked from our mosques; we have taken the mosque, a gift from Allah, for granted and did not truly consider its due worth. When matters go back to normal, hopefully people will really feel the bounty of Allah and His favours. Meanwhile, it is important to remember that Allah's favours and blessings are both hidden and apparent. Allah, the Exalted, says, ‘Do not think it is bad for you, rather, it is good for you”. Among the blessings to consider are the benefits we have experienced from remaining in our homes. Let’s ask ourselves, how many of our children have recited the Quran and have memorized verses and sayings which otherwise would not have been memorized had they not remained in their homes under isolation?

Ask ourselves, due to this isolation, how many of us have had the opportunity and blessing of drawing nearer to and engaging with our children and spouses that we hadn’t in many years? Indeed, it was an opportunity to discover who we really are, and what is our purpose in this life. It was a chance to increase the love in our families. We were compelled to be cut off from our mosques, and I am certain that Allah, the Mighty, the Majestic, has written for us the reward. Did our Prophet, Allah's praise and peace be upon him, not say, “If the slave gets sick or was on travel, the reward is written for him/her (for his/her good deeds) as if he/she was not sick and not travelling”. So, let me inform you that those who used to do good deeds, such as frequenting the mosques, and were prevented from doing so, due to the pandemic, are given the glad tidings, that the rewards for their good deeds will continue. This is Allah's favour which He grants to whom He wills. Our relationships with our neighbours have improved during this seclusion, and we ought to be on that level of connection with our fellow Muslims as well as with our non-Muslim friends. We should take any opportunity to help everyone in our city in order to preserve it, and to continue being righteous people in society at large. May Allah bless our Eid and may He accept our good deeds. I want to express plenty of gratitude to our doctors and workers on the frontlines; you are very much appreciated.

Finally, to my brothers and sisters in our community, I am missing you a great deal, as is the Mosque. May Allah make this easy on all of us. And thanks to all of you who have never, nor will you ever fall short in supporting our Mosque and its functions. Thank you for all of your support.

May Allah preserve you from all harm and may Allah accept from us and you.

A Busy Tone

I jumped off the floor, grabbed the receiver and punched in those seven digits.

I looked to my siblings sitting on the ground, their eyes tripled in size, waiting for my next words. I looked to my parents sitting in the corner of the family room, smiles adorning their face. I looked at my hands, trembling with excitement.

Again, I dialed.

No matter how many times we punched those seven digits into the phone, we were always met with that frustratingly repetitive and staccato sound.

My siblings and I sat on the floor of my family’s living room and watched my dad dial the number, praying that someone would pick up.

Standing on the precipice of defeat, I tried one last time before I would concede.

“God, please let someone pick up” I prayed as I punched in the number.

This time, no busy sound. This time, I heard the glorious purr of a ringing tone.

“Try again dad. Pleaaaase.” we plead.

Despite having dialed that number what felt like a hundred times, my father looked at his children, sitting crossed-legged before him, cracked a half-smile and tried again.

A little while later, exasperated, my father said: “Ok, let’s take a break.

Maybe we’ll get through later”.

“IT’S RINGING! IT’S RINGING!” I exclaimed.

My siblings jumped to their feet. I feverishly yelled to my father “Dad, come grab it, come grab it!!”

My mother and father, undoubtedly amused by the spectacle unfolding before them said “Ali, when they pick up, you ask them”.

Distraught at the prospect of a temporary pause, we acquiesced.

What choice did we have really?

Seconds later, I heard a voice pickup:

“TOMORROW IS EID!!!!!!!” I excitedly proclaimed.

My siblings jumped up and we celebrated. My mother gave us kisses and said we had to pick out our clothes and get to sleep for tomorrow. My dad smiled and asked “did he say who it was on the phone?”

Did it matter really? It could have been the Imam, or maybe the custodian or maybe just some random guy walking by the phone in the basement at that moment.

Whoever it was, he was, in that moment, the official spokesperson for the London Muslim Mosque and the deliverer of the most glorious news.

Three decades later, as I reminisce about days past, I lament the fact that while not that long ago, I long for the simplicity of it all. A time before smartphones and instant access to information were commonplace.

A time before mass email blasts from the masjid was a thing. A time before fatwas would seek to draw

our gaze away from the sky in place of a mathematical calculation to determine the beginning and end of this holy month. A time when our community was small and we all celebrated at one time, in one place, our home at 151 Oxford Street.

Alhamdulillah, I am the father of three now. My children Yasmeen, Dalia and Bilal are almost the exact age that my siblings and I were in my story above. In this age of global pandemics and physical distancing, all of us will celebrate Eid-Al-Fitr in a

way that none of us have ever done before.

So that one day, three decades from now, when they look back with nostalgia at one of their earliest Eids, they will tell their own children that

This past month, Muslims across Canada and around the world have fasted from sunrise to sunset, and have taken the opportunity to engage in deep spiritual reflection. Eid-alFitr is a joyous time among friends and family and an opportunity to reflect on the lessons of sacrifice recently learned through fasting and zakat along with values such as service, compassion, and generosity.

Ordinarily this time of year, thousands of Muslims would gather for Eid prayers across the city. This has always been a sight to see. I know the celebrations will be much different this time around, but I hope that you will remain united and stay kind to each other. Please continue to keep yourself, your loved ones and your community safe by continuing physical distancing measures, and listening to the advice of our public health officials. May we all

The Ramadan That Was… It was bittersweet because we didn’t get to enjoy iftars with family and friends like we are used to doing. We didn’t get to greet each other physically; not our family or friends. But, on the other hand, it was the best Ramadan ever because we had more time for Allah and His book and His Prophet (s). We had a better opportunity for reflecting on our lives, personally and collectively. It helped us relate in a very small way ofcourse to what the companion Omar (r) experienced during the plague and the whole idea of being apart from others.

I feel COVID (during Ramadan) was a blessing in disguise; the best Ramadan, alhumdulillah!! I had the privilege of working from home and being able to flex my time.

For the first time in my life I was able to do so much of the in-depth Prayers, Tarawih and Tahajjud. Yes, we did not get to socialize much with family and friends but that in turn gave us more time to reflect.

Ramadan was a very different experience for me this year as it was for the whole world. The benefits of being isolated was that I got to read much more Quran and Islamic books. I also gave more attention to my prayers including the night prayers. I did not let anything stand in the way of praying tarawih every night. I owe that to Allah.

Ramadan 2020 (1441) has been an amazing spiritual journey with a greater sense of thankfulness to Allah. Praying on time and having more time to concentrate on reading and understanding Quran has been a true gift from All Mighty this blessed month. As the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “There are two blessings which many people waste: health and free time.”. This Ramadan our family's goal was to be deeply grateful for our health and utilize our free time to bring our hearts closer to Allah and help others around us. The free time for young children with no school or activities, has enabled them to fast without any difficulty and admire the true beauty of Ramadan that goes beyond just staying hungry.

Salam my name is Mariam and I am 9 years old.

This year Eid will be different but I’m still eagerly anticipating it. After all, it’s Eid and I am very excited.

This year was my very first year of fasting and so I am glad that I have completed the full month of fasting. I am looking forward to my gifts and my new pajamas. Every Eid, the night before, I get a new pair of pajamas. The new pajama makes me even more excited to wake up for Eid. Sometimes I have a hard time falling asleep thinking about Eid. My Eid clothes are hung up and ready to be worn the next morning.

The house is beautifully decorated, with lots of sweets and date cookies everywhere and I can’t wait to unwrap the gifts after the prayer.

This year we can’t go anywhere to visit our grandparents or aunts, uncles and cousins for Eid. However, I have made plans to drop off gifts and wave as we drive by. I pray that all of the children around the world are just as happy as I am on Eid. I make dua that Allah (swt) helps us find a cure for this virus and that we can all spend time together again. Living in Canada, we do not celebrate Christmas, Easter and Halloween, so when Eid Day arrives, it is extremely special and festive for us Muslims .

This year, no doubt, Eid will be different. Usually I look forward to waking up early and getting dressed in my best clothing and heading to the Islamic Centre with my family to pray. Afterwards, I look forward to seeing friends and socializing with cousins. My favorite part is going out for breakfast with my parents, grandparents and cousins; socializing about the gifts we received that morning and counting the money from friends and family.

This year I am not sure what my parents have planned because of the Coronavirus situation, however, one thing I am sure of is that it has been a rewarding Ramadan month, and for that I am grateful.

Older children will give gifts to younger children to increase the spirit of Eid. Although we can't all get together in one house, we will share our dinner with family and have a sense of togetherness, virtually. Eid Mubarak!

The excitement begins when we wake up extra early and go to Salat Eid Al-Fitr and get to see thousands of other Muslims pray together. This is the only time we see so many Muslims in one place and it feels like we are at Hajj. This is where I get to see all my friends from school, and we pray and hang out together.

Another important part to Salat Al-Fitr Prayers is when I am blessed enough to be able to put money in the donation box to give charity to the less fortunate people. This is an incredibly fun day when we get to celebrate the whole day with friends and relatives.

We enjoy big family feasts and eat sweets all day long. My ultimate favorite part of the day is receiving money and gifts from my parents, friends and relatives. The only problem this year is that I guess all this will have to be done virtually. Alhumdulillah. I will send them my email address...hint, hint :)

Although Eid Al Fitr won’t be physically happening this year, it doesn’t mean it won’t happen in our hearts. We should stay home to prevent the spread of the virus, as the Prophet (pbuh) once told us “ When you hear that [a plague] is in a land, do not go to it and if it occurs in a land that you are already in, then do not leave it, fleeing from it.”

None of what is happening takes away the purpose and importance of Eid Al Fitr. We should celebrate to the fullest we can, even in self isolation. And let’s all be thankful for everything, especially being blessed with this great religion.

Recipes As we all practice ‘staying at home’, more of us are cooking and baking. Cooking is a necessity in feeding the family, but some aspects of cooking can be a stress reliever as well. Baking bread is the latest trend in providing individuals and families with a sense of satisfaction for the mind and taste buds! We hope some of the recipes here inspire you to de-stress and engage in some happy cooking time while enjoying the fruits of your labor with your loved ones in your home. These following recipes were compiled by Sandy Nsair and Fatuma Chahbar.

Pecan Cheesecake

Base

Ingredients

•

2 cups Graham Cracker (crushed)

•

2 1/2 cup flour

•

1/3 cup Melted Butter

•

1 cup sugar

•

1 tablespoon baking powder

•

1 teaspoon mahleb

•

1 cup unsalted butter room temp. (do not melt)

•

4 - 5 tablespoon water

•

3/4 cup toasted sesame seeds

•

3/4 cup crushed pistachios

Mix together and put bottom of your pie pan. Pat down flat with cup. Chill.

Cheese Cake •

1/4 cup Whole Milk

•

16 Oz Cream Cheese

•

3/4 cup white Sugar

Instructions Mix first 4 ingredients. Add butter mix with hands. Add water 1 tablespoon at a time til you get a soft dough let it rest 10 minutes. Cut into 1 inch balls press it into the pistachios turn it over and press the other side into the sesame seeds.

Place onto ungreased baking sheet use the bottom of a cup to flatten the cookie 1/4 inch thick. Bake 350 til nicely golden around edges. Makes 24 cookies.

Machine whip in bowl. Add: •

1/2 cup Sour Cream

•

2 tsp Vanilla Extract

•

2 tbsp Flour

Machine whip, then pour over gram cracker base in pie pan. Bake for 1 hour @ 325 F.

Pecan Butter •

1/2 tsp salt

1/4 cup Cornstarch

•

1 cup Brown Sugar

Mix on own in bowl, then put into pot over stove •

4 egg Yolks

•

1/2 cup warm Heavy Cream

•

2/3 cup Maple Syrup

Mix together in pot over stove. Bring to boil •

1 tsp Vanilla Extract

•

4 tbsp Butter

Continue to whisk until nice golden brown viscous consistency •

2 cups Chopped Pecans

Mix and let cool . Add onto cheesecake base.

Decorate with Whole Pecan. Chill before serving.

Coconut Hareesa Ingredients •

2 cup #2 semolina

•

2 cup sugar

•

2 cup yogurt

•

1 teaspoon baking soda

•

1 tablespoon melted butter

•

1 cup unsweetened coconut

•

1 cup atar (sugar syrup)

•

1/2 cup slivered almonds (optional)

Instructions Grease 9X13 glass baking pan with tahini.

Mix all ingredients together except utar.

Spread into the baking pan. Sprinkle with slivered almonds if desired. Bake 325 til golden around edges. Broil the top until golden. Remove from oven, pour room temperature utar all over hareesa. Cool before cutting.
