The narrator, a librarian by trade, was an anonymous baby and knows nothing of his biological mother. He realizes that there might not be any inheritance more powerful or more intimate than his. Jean Berthier’s first novel is a gorgeous ode to literature and the place it holds in our lives.
Le narrateur, bibliothécaire de formation, né sous X, ignore tout de sa mère biologique. On peut donc aisément deviner sa surprise lorsqu’il reçoit d’elle un héritage : des cartons remplis de livres. 1 144 précisément ; toute une bibliothèque. Après une longue hésitation, le narrateur se décide à aller réceptionner ces cartons entreposés dans une chambre d’hôtel, à les ouvrir, à feuilleter les ouvrages. Petit à petit, il se rappelle les livres qui l’ont ému, intrigué, transporté, soutenu depuis qu’il s’est mis à lire. Il réalise alors qu’il n’y a peutêtre pas d’héritage plus fort et plus intime que celui-ci. Avec ce premier roman Jean Berthier signe un merveilleux éloge de la littérature et de la place qu’elle occupe dans nos vies..
