Après une longue hésitation, le narrateur se décide à aller réceptionner ces cartons entreposés dans une chambre d’hôtel, à les ouvrir, à feuilleter les ouvrages. Life Goes By brings together the essence of the “non-song” literary production of French singer Charles Trenet: hundreds of texts of diverse tone and genre written over the years as the ideas struck him, almost all originally published in newspapers. Cabu embellished them with his own drawings. We find a mix of “surrealist tales,” writings on poetry or cinema, childhood memories, as well as the story of his imprisonment in the United States on Ellis Island in 1948, on charges of homosexuality.
