THINK TECHNOLOGY IS HARD? TRY LOSING THE BID. It’s a fact—most construction companies have been cautious about integrating technology and data into their business. But you can choose to get out in front of many of your competitors by leveraging technology that helps increase productivity and reduce costs. While others are still weighing the options, you could be winning more work. In the age of smart iron, you have the opportunity to combine your hands-on experience with the precision and efficiency of advanced technology. Cat Connect technologies and services can help you up your game, get ahead of the competition and stay there. BUILT FOR IT . ®

IMPROVE YOUR ODDS WITH CAT GRADE TECHNOLOGY ®

Technology isn’t one-size fits all—it needs to match your application and budget. If you’ve got a big project, you have a longer duration to recoup the cost. On the other hand, if you’re concerned that you may not generate a return as quickly as you would like, you can choose a lower-initial-cost system. Your Cat dealer can help you figure out which option works best for your business. ®

GET TO GRADE FASTER. Here are three ways that Cat GRADE, a Cat Connect technology, can help you complete grading jobs faster.

REACH GRADE TARGETS 45% FASTER.* RUN A CAT 323F EXCAVATOR WITH GRADE ASSIST where the bucket and stick automatically follow a pre-set grade.

FINISH UP TO 39% FASTER.* RUN A CAT D6N DOZER WITH SLOPE ASSIST where the blade automatically maintains a pre-established angle.

IMPROVE PRODUCTIVITY AND ACCURACY BY UP TO 50%.* RUN A CAT 140M3 MOTOR GRADER WITH CROSS SLOPE where one side of the blade is automatically controlled to maintain a target grade. *compared to operators using conventional methods without digital assistance.

BETTER YET, REDUCE YOUR COST. Not only does Cat GRADE boost productivity, it will also help reduce cost. Operators with less experience can achieve greater accuracy faster. And, that means less fuel burned in multiple passes or rework. Increased accuracy can also save on materials cost. Bedding material for example can be placed very near specifications without overfill or waste. Cat GRADE eliminates the need for grade checkers, so the cost of that labor goes directly to savings on the bottom line. Learn more at catallday.com/technology.

KL Dual Lift Barrier Tongs

The Dual Lift can grab two wall segments at a time, or it can be used to handle single wall sections. It is ready for immediate operation on any type or model of machine with lifting capabilities, with no need to attach additional hydraulics. It hooks up to the carrier with a typical sling and shackle assembly. Automatic action allows hands-free operation. It grips when it is set down, and will not release until the wall has been placed into position. Alignment legs extrude from one side of the lifter so the operator can guide it onto the wall. The pad angles swivel to match the slope of the wall being lifted, and elastomer pads ensure a secure grip, even in wet weather. Grip ranges and capacities are engineered to meet specific requirements.

1263 ADT Pull Scraper

Skidsteersolutions.com Eterra RT-20 Raptor Boom Arm and Mower

The Eterra RT-20 Raptor Boom Arm for skid steers and compact track loaders is the third generation of boom mower built by Eterra in partnership with Skidsteersolutions. com. The first and second generation models could only extend out to the side at a fixed 90° angle. The current version can reach up to 20 ft. with a universal 180° range of motion to the front, to the side and angled behind, thanks to a rotary hydraulic actuator fitted into the design. Other modifications have been made to make the boom arm stronger, more durable, easier to control (remote controls), more powerful and safer. It can be used with three sizes of sickle bar trimmers, a 36-in. flail mower and a 4-ft. rotary mower. An optional collector broom can be mounted for sidewalk sweeping.

The 1263 ADT offers a heaped capacity of 63 cu. yds. (ISO) and empty tare weight of 61,000 lbs. It has an extra 9 cu. yds. of capacity over the 1254 ADT, thanks to a 15.25-ft.-long bucket and larger gate belly, which can contain more material. To maximize capacity, a push dozer in the cut is recommended to utilize the standard roller push-block feature. The unit also has a large target area for easy, efficient loading with an excavator. It is designed to be pulled with 40-ton or larger articulated dump trucks, with its hitch system transferring 32% of the scraper load weight to the point where the truck is designed to carry weight. A digital display screen is included in the truck cab to access visual operating details, track load count productivity and for troubleshooting/serviceability. A bolt-together design allows for ease of maintenance.

Remlinger Fecon

Stumpex Stumper The 1,500-lb. Stumpex stump grinder features low rpm and 33,600 ft.-lbs. of torque at 4,000 psi, enabling it to draw itself down into any species of stump from 10 to 28 in. in diameter and up to 20 in. deep in a single pass. Larger diameter stumps can be processed by making additional passes. The attachment can be mounted on skid steers with 20- to 42-gpm hydraulic output. A threaded cone and staggered AR500 cutting blades grind out stump and roots with minimal discharge; no carbide cutting tools are needed. Chips stay mostly in the hole for faster, easier cleanup. Low maintenance costs, high production and increased safety make the unit well-suited for land clearing, tree care and municipal applications.

Skid Steer PFM Screening Bucket Remlinger’s PFM Series 700 Screening Bucket for skid-steer loaders is suitable for landscaping, farms, industrial uses, golf courses, baseball fields, beaches and other applications for digging, loading and carrying larger materials. It screens dirt, gravel, sand, demolition debris, large rocks and other materials to prepare sub-grade surfaces by compacting and screening at the site, plus screens bedding material. A quick-change replaceable screen cloth is available in various opening sizes. The unit fits most skid-steer loaders with bi-directional auxiliary hydraulics. Its simple, rugged design results in minimal downtime for service and maintenance.

The 750-lb. FasTrac Concrete Mixer converts any skid-steer loader into a portable concrete mixer. Power is supplied by a hydraulic motor connected to the standard quick-disconnects on the loader. The model 750 has a 3/4-cu.-yd. capacity and the model 500 has a 1/2-cu.-yd. capacity. A rubber trough base provides the flexibility to handle aggregates of varying sizes while enabling tighter tolerances. A solid steel, all-welded mixing auger operates in either direction for optimal mixing. Concrete can be poured from the left or right side, and the discharge chute extends up to 6 ft., providing more latitude when positioning the mixer. The pour gate seals to prevent water and material from escaping, and makes the units suitable for self-leveling applications that involve a more fluid mix.

Worksaver

Sweep Action Rock Grapple Worksaver’s Sweep Action Rock Grapple (SARG) for skid-steer loaders can handle rocks, brush, logs, stumps, debris and more, and enables operators to sort large or small material with a single tool. The front grapples operate in a sweeping action to pull rocks or debris into the bucket for easy site cleanup. The grapple design then retains the rocks or debris while the operator rocks the attachment to sift out the dirt. Grapples work independently of each other, allowing the attachment to clamp uneven loads. Bolt-on side plates can be removed, revealing cutouts to help handle logs and stumps. Two models are available — the 1,194-lb. SARG-72 features an overall width of 72 in., while the 1,375-lb. SARG-84 has an overall width of 84 in. Both models have a 45-in. grapple opening and a 34-in. bucket depth, and come with a universal skid-steer mount.

ADVANCED POWERTRAINS GENERATE ROI Even When Fuel Prices Trend Lower

The performance benefits of hybrids and other advanced powertrain systems extend beyond the fuel savings.

W

hen on-road diesel fuel prices spiked over $4 per gallon approximately three years ago, off-road manufacturers stepped to the plate with innovative solutions, including hybrid technology for earthmoving machinery and advanced powertrain systems. Some manufacturers have succeeded with this technology, while others never got past the prototype stage, or temporarily shelved their solutions as diesel fuel prices began a rapid descent — to

around $2.31 for on-road diesel at the time this was written. So do hybrid and advanced powertrain technologies justify price premiums that can reach as high as 20% when fuel prices remain relatively low? The answer really depends on the technology and its application. “At the end of the day, our customers want to make more money by getting jobs done faster and at a lower input cost,” says Wes Holm, chief engineer, Caterpillar Medium Tractor Products. “So you have

Comparative tests have shown that Liebherr XPower wheel loaders require up to 30% less fuel than conventionally driven wheel loaders.

to weigh the importance of ownership period, productivity, cycle times, fuel efficiency, ease of operation, maintenance cost and emissions requirements offered by the advanced powertrains. Ease of operation shouldn’t be overlooked as skilled operators become scarcer.” The increased performance that many hybrids offer is starting to gain prominence over actual fuel savings. “We expect the attitude toward hybrid technology to start taking a completely different twist,” says Kurt Moncini, senior product manager for tracked products, Komatsu America. “It is very important to look at what type of hybrid technology is used. Systems that return energy to the whole system instead of just the swing circuit provide performance that will factor in as a bigger benefit and fuel savings becomes the icing on the cake.” Moncini explains that evaluating ROI on hybrids depends on price, utilization, performance and fuel savings. Evaluation needs to be about more than just fuel savings, because fuel alone can be misleading. A 20- to 30-ton excavator typically burns 3.5 to upwards of 7.5 gallons an hour depending upon utilization and application. If you have a high load factor application and can save 20% in fuel at 7 gallons per hour, that is a 1 gallon per hour savings. Multiply that by an eight-hour day at the current cost of diesel and the fuel savings alone would make a difficult case for ROI. When you factor in a potential productivity advantage, the case becomes much clearer. “Looking at the electric swing drive/generator/ultra-capacitor technology we used in the HB215LC-1 and the direction we will be taking with future models, that technology ends up providing more than just better

T he Caterpillar D7E features an electric drivetrain that generates high torque at low speeds and remains efficient over the entire operating range. Ease of use makes it more productive for even less experienced operators.

fuel efficiency,” Moncini asserts. “It gives us performance plus energy savings.” The list price premium for a John Deere 644K Hybrid wheel loader is about 7% compared to its conventional counterpart with a torque converter. While the Hybrid reduces fuel consumption by about 25% on average, that is only part of the story. “Customers make it very clear they can no longer hire operators,” says John Chesterman, John Deere Construction & Forestry. “They are getting ‘drivers.’” The hybrid technology makes it much easier for a less skilled operator to run a wheel loader more productively.

RECAPTURE WASTED ENERGY Excavators are a natural target for hybrid technology since there is a lot of energy wasted braking the upperstructure. Komatsu was the first to introduce a hybrid excavator to the U.S. market. “We have an electrically driven swing that charges an ultra-capacitor when decelerating and draws stored power for swing when required,” says Moncini. “A generator/motor between the engine and hydraulic pumps can draw energy from the ultra-capacitor to provide additional power to the whole hydraulic system for improved performance. The energy captured by the ultracapacitor helps boost engine power available for all functions.” “That captured energy input back to the hydraulic system can provide up to 60 additional horsepower, which is pretty significant, especially when it comes to a smaller four-cylinder engine,” says Justin Latin, excavator product marketing manager, Komatsu America. “On the HB215LC-1, we actually went to a smaller engine and use stored electrical energy to supplement the total power input to the hydraulic system,” says Moncini. “It is the same approach as used on high-performance hybrid cars. They use electric motors to add power to a traditional mechanical drivetrain for better performance.” This shows up in the machine’s response. “My initial

perception of the HB215LC-1 was that it was a very peppy or snappy machine,” recalls Moncini. Looking forward as technology improves, there is a definite opportunity to scale hybrid technology up to larger models. “Today, if you look at smaller machines — which is where our hybrids are — they tend to be lower in annual usage and consume less fuel,” notes Moncini. The situation could become even more favorable toward hybrids as you move to larger machines that consume more fuel and have higher utilization rates. “Komatsu intends to introduce a larger hybrid excavator in the U.S. later this year.” The type of application also has an impact on the economics of excavator hybrid technology. “If you look at typical excavator applications, hybrid systems really come into play when you are swinging more than 90°,” says Moncini. “In a traditional earthmoving job, if you are swinging 90° to 180°, that is not a very efficient way to move dirt. You want to be between 45° and 90°.” Typically, above-ground operations with a large repetitive swing cycle are most beneficial for a hybrid model. Caterpillar spent years developing and testing both electric and hydraulic hybrid technologies prior to introducing its hydraulic hybrid excavator in 2013. It says the electric hybrid option would have required special technician training on the unfamiliar electronics and battery storage system. In comparison, the hydraulic hybrid components are familiar to standard machines and easy to maintain. “The primary reason we introduced our hydraulic hybrid is because it lowers customer owning and operating costs while maintaining the same high level of production as our standard 336,” says Brian Stellbrink. Caterpillar excavator product application specialist. He points out that the 336 hybrid has three ingredients contractors can think of as “conserve, optimize and reuse.” It conserves fuel with the use

of a high-efficiency pump. Performance is optimized with Caterpillar’s Adaptive Control System (ACS) valve — the “brain” that puts the energy where you need it when you need it. And it recovers and reuses otherwise wasted swing energy through the use of an accumulator. “Considering an excavator typically stops and swings every 15 seconds in a high-production application, there is a significant opportunity for energy savings,” says Stellbrink. “But customers in any application — including utility applications — will benefit from the ‘conserve’ and ‘optimize’ elements.” According to Stellbrink, the bottom line is that Caterpillar’s hydraulic hybrid excavator is less complex and less costly than other hybrid technologies, thereby resulting in a shorter time to recoup upfront costs. “You save money with either high or low fuel prices because our hydraulic hybrid excavator burns up to 20% less fuel than

The Komatsu HB215LC-1 Hybrid excavator captures wasted energy with an ultra-capacitor. When needed, this energy can be kicked back into the hydraulic system, providing up to 60 additional horsepower to the hydraulic pump. our standard model,” he says. “We have a calculator (www. ma-catinfo.com/LP=948) for contractors to see for themselves how quickly they can achieve a return on their investment.”

COMBINING HYDROSTATIC AND MECHANICAL DRIVES New driveline technology takes advantage of the strengths and efficiencies of both hydrostatic and mechanical drives. “The Liebherr XPower loaders possess a power-split transmission, which combines two drive paths: a mechanical path for

ForConstructionPros.com

ET0916_30-33_Earthmoving_CB.indd 31

acceleration and traveling long distances, and a hydrostatic path for loading and gear shifting,” says Nick Rogers, product specialist, Liebherr USA. “With the integration of this transmission, we are able to achieve maximum efficiency out of every drop of fuel.” Power supplied by the diesel engine is split via a planetary gearbox to a hydrostatic branch and a mechanical branch. The two branches are then combined again so that full performance is available. During operation, the ratio between the two branches is variably adjusted. Comparative tests have shown that XPower wheel loaders require up to 30% less fuel than conventionally driven wheel loaders. Caterpillar added a continuously variable transmission (CVT) to the 966 and 972 wheel loaders that combines mechanical and hydrostatic systems. The XE version of the 966M and 972M loaders with CVT provides up to a 25% improvement in fuel consumption vs. the current series,

and over 35% vs. previous generation machines. The CVT replaces a traditional driveline’s torque converter with a hydraulic pump and motor (variator), which allows for smooth, continuous ratio changes between engine speed and machine speed. Power is transmitted through the CVT in a parallel mechanical path, much like a powershift transmission. It is combined with variator power through a series of planetary gear sets. Transmission operation is automated and transparent to the operator.

“The main fuel savings are accomplished by two distinct features,” says Lucas Sardenberg, marketing consultant, Caterpillar medium and large wheel loader marketing consultant. “First, the new transmission replaces the torque converter in the powertrain. Torque converters are very inefficient, especially during the dig portion of the cycle. If you focus on the dig cycle alone, the fuel benefit of an XE is as high as 50% over a conventional Despite the current price of diesel fuel, contransmission. tractors are still able to realize a significant ROI “Second, the with hybrid technology. new technology Wichita, KS-based Cornejo & Sons produces allows the engine to limestone, sand, concrete and asphalt. ROI on the CVT is complicated because it depends on the application, hours of operation per year and the model of machine replaced by the XE technology. “On the low end with less than 1,500 hours annually and fuel savings of 0.5 gallons per hour, payback is more than four years,” says Sardenberg. “However, with 3,000 hours per year and a fuel savings of 1.5 to 2.0 gallons per hour, the payback can be shorter than two years.”

CUSTOMERS REALIZE SAVINGS WITH HYBRIDS

He adds, “It is important to stress the comparison to the equipment being replaced. More than one customer replaced larger machines by XEs, thus payback was really short due to the fuel savings. Another important point to consider is that the XE technology can bring other benefits aside from fuel alone, with ease of operation with only two pedals being a major one noticed by operators, and also hill-holding capability and retarding.”

electric motors extremely fast with solid-state electronics,” says Chesterman. “That allows us to control the smoothness of how the machine shifts during reversals.” It also allows the wheel motors to rapidly switch from providing power to the wheels to recovering energy and putting power back into the system. The electric wheel motors control traction and prevent slip, while the engine always runs at a constant speed, providing full hydraulic power at all times. “With our hybrid technology, speed has nothing to do with pushing power,” says Chesterman. “One of the great benefits of electric motors is they essentially have their maximum torque at near zero speed. For the lower skilled operator, they don’t [have to maintain] that balancing act with

operating costs by 10% compared to the D7R Series II. The D7E’s electric drivetrain generates high torque at low speeds. Because there are no friction clutches, driveshafts or belts — and fewer parts overall — it more efficiently transfers engine power to the ground. And with no gears, there are no peaks and valleys in powertrain efficiency. The continuously variable electric drive is efficient over the entire operation range. “Fuel savings is the easiest to measure on payback, and higher fuel prices make for a quicker payback,” says Holm. “We estimate that our D7E customers worldwide have saved over 9 million gallons of diesel fuel since the machine was introduced. So if you are looking at $2.60 diesel, that’s more than $23 million

Certain machines, like the Caterpillar D7E diesel-electric dozer and John Deere 644K Hybrid and 944K Hybrid wheel loaders, have benefited by moving to electric drive. Because the diesel engine basically acts as a generator, it can be optimized to run at a set speed. Engines that run at constant speeds have much longer lives than those that are continually hunting up and down the rpm range to make power. The John Deere 644K and 944K Hybrid loaders use hybrid electric drive, which results in greater ease of operation. A conventional torque converter-equipped wheel loader requires the operator to perform a balancing act. “The engine speed really controls how hard The electric drive on the John Deere 644K Hybrid wheel loader greatly the machine pushes,” simplifies the demands from the operator, making it easier for novice explains Chesterman. “As operators to be productive. [operators] step on the accelerator, they are basically telling the engine to rev up, the engine speed, power range back to the customers’ bottom but at the same time, the engine and hydraulics. They just need to line. speed is proportional to the speed step on the pedal.” Factors that go into the overof the hydraulics. GRASP MAXIMUM PRODUCT I with Thumb and Grapple Selection The following tips can help you find the right balance of features to meet your demolition application needs.

T

humbs and grapples allow an excavator to pick, place and sort demolition materials with relative ease. But selecting the appropriate tool for your job is complicated by the wide assortment of options. There are many different types and configurations of thumbs and grapples, each offering unique benefits and limitations. Make the right choice and you will be rewarded with increased productivity. Choose the wrong attachment and productivity will suffer and/or attachment uptime and overall life will decrease.

BUCKET THUMB CONSIDERATIONS The bucket/thumb combination can handle most tasks, and if you need to dig with your machine, it provides an effective solution. Like the thumb on your hand, the excavator bucket thumb can grasp oddly shaped items, then folds out of the way for normal digging and loading. Yet, this is not a one-sizefits-all solution. “There are a lot of thumb styles on the market today,” says Tracy Black, operations manager, Kenco. “Most

40  EQUIPM ENT T OD AY | September 2016 ET0916_40-42_DemolitionAttachments_BC.indd 40

thumbs are designed to handle just about anything, but certain types can be more productive. “For example, if the debris is smaller in nature, then a thumb with four tines spaced closer together would be much better than two tines spaced further apart,” he explains. “Larger debris allows for less tines and greater spacing, which in turn gives the operator better visibility. The thumb will also be lighter, which gives the machine a larger payload.” Also available are both hydraulic and mechanical versions with a variety of teeth that intermesh with the bucket teeth. Mechanical thumbs are typically mounted with a simple weldon bracket with no special pins or hydraulics required. They provide a low-cost solution for occasional use, while hydraulic thumbs provide a strong, positive grip on the load. “Having the added flexibility and precision of a hydraulic thumb will prove more efficient over time by allowing the operator to easily grasp objects,” says Mark Nye, Nye Mfg. There is a trade-off between

cost and productivity, howevrange of motion, often up to er. “Hydraulic thumbs are more 180°. This allows the thumb to expensive but they will outpergrip throughout the entire range form a mechanical model,” notes of the bucket. intersect with teeth regardless of bucket position (full curl to partial dump). “When the bucket is removed, so is the thumb, which means it is not sticking out under the arm where it could possibly get damaged or be in the way,” he comments. There is no pivot bracket on the stick to interfere with other attachments. Pin-mounted thumbs also work well with pin grabbers and quick couplers. “The thumb stays with the machine independent of the bucket,” says Nye. But with no quick coupler, the main pin and thumb has to be removed with the bucket, meaning extra work. There are also several advantages to stick-mounted thumbs. “The thumb stays with the machine and is unaffected by attachment changes,” says Nye. It is easy to remove when not needed (except baseplate and pivots). But the tips will only intersect the bucket teeth at one point, so thumb length is important. “When using a pin grabber, the thumb needs to be extra long, which increases twisting forces on the bracket.” When selecting a thumb, it’s important to match the bucket tip radius and tooth spacing. Width is also a consideration. “Wider thumbs are good for picking up bulky materials like municipal waste, brush, etc.,” says Nye. “Yet, wider thumbs

Most loading is done with mechanical grapples, which enable the operator to smash the material down for compaction without damaging the grapple.

grapple is being used for any of the demolition will probably dictate what is used for loading,” he continues. “Most contractors are going to use what is on the machine to do everything. Given the opportunity, it would be ideal to have both on the job. The demolition grapple could handle the heavy work and let the lighter/wider grapple come in to take care of the smaller material.” Durability is critical when handling demolition debris. “Most sorting grapples have internal cylinders and rotate motors which require two extra hydraulic circuits. They are not as strong and durable as mechanical demolition grapples,” says Nye. “Most loading is done with mechanical grapples where the operator can smash the material down for compaction without

damaging the grapple. “Mechanical demolition grapples are simple with virtually no moving parts,” he continues. “Maintenance costs are kept to a minimum and wear parts are limited to abrasion from loading/unloading materials. A good operator can spin, flip, manipulate and sort materials fast and effectively with a mechanical grapple with no need for the expense and headache of a rotating sorting grapple.” If the application demands precise material handling, however, a rotating grapple may be the better choice. It offers up to 360° rotation, which allows the operator to grab from any angle without moving the machine. In the right job situation, a rotating grapple can outperform any fixed grapple. The downside is that with hydraulics and rotators, the price goes up. Weigh the initial cost vs. the expected gain, and be sure to check the rotator design to make sure it is fully protected from debris. Tine spacing is an important consideration for material to be sorted. “Ideally, the unwanted material should easily pass through the grapple,” says Black. “This creates quicker, more productive cycle times.” There are many different tine

configurations available. Typically, if a customer is working with smaller debris, a larger number of tines is the way to go. Demolition grapples usually have a two-over-three tine configuration for picking larger items. Brush or debris grapples are normally a three-overfour tine design. The more contact area the grapple applies to the load, the more the clamping force will decrease. The type of material being handled will have a major impact on the most appropriate tine configuration. “Heavy steel beams and blocks call for a two-over-three tine configuration,” notes Nye. “General-purpose demolition calls for a three-over-four tine configuration. Brush, municipal waste and bulky materials call for four-over-five tines. Precision picking calls for an optional hydraulic brace rather than a standard rigid brace.” Seek advice on tine spacing based on the material you handle. “Kenco has provided grapples for all types of material,” says Black. “We have the ability to create custom tine spacings which allow certain size debris to fall through while retaining what is needed. These tine spacings can also be plated off to retain as much as possible.” There are also plate shell and rib shell designs available. Plate shells are used more in the waste industries vs. the rib shell version, which tends to get material stuck within the ribs. The plate shell stays clean and keeps working longer. However, the depth of the ribs on the ribbed version gives strength to the shells. The ribbed design also allows for increased visibility and screening of material.

QUICK COUPLERS IMPACT CHOICE Certain demolition grapples can work with or without a quick coupler. (Direct pin-on grapples typically do not work well on couplers.) If you intend to use a quick coupler in the future, it’s best to purchase it with the grapple, since grapples should be set up at the factory to work with the coupler. It is quite expensive to retrofit grapples at a later date. “Quick coupler-mounted grapples are a compromise,” says Nye. “They may tend to ‘double act,’ making it a little more challenging for the operator to master. Forces are lower due to the pin centers and extra height. Direct pin-on grapples offer the most simple and effective option for mounting. There is no double action and the machine’s breakout force is increased due to increased pin center distance.” Purpose-designed coupler-mounted grapples are available. “Kenco offers a coupler-mounted grapple that keeps the same geometry as a pin-on version,” says Black. “The two halves of this grapple are connected via two short pins, which are kept in direct line of the machine stick pin. This gives you the proper rotation without sacrificing coupler usage.” ET

RISE ABOVE the Basics

of Boom Lift Selection Assess the various features and capabilities of the machine to ensure an optimal match to the application.

T

oday’s boom lifts can elevate workers and materials from a relatively short height of 10 to 20 ft. to a more astounding elevation of nearly 200 ft. Coupled with choices that include telescopic and articulated booms; power sources that range from electric motors to gasoline or diesel engines and hybrid options; and the ability to operate on rough terrain or smooth surfaces, it can be overwhelming to determine which machine to use for which task. Contractors typically have a variety of boom lifts offering a mix of features and capabilities, with rental filling any gaps for specific tasks. However, whether you’re renting or selecting from models in your fleet, assessing the proficiencies of each unit and asking a few questions about the task can help determine which size and type will best fit a particular application. A good place to start is to assess features related to size, such as the required lift/reach. “Are you working 10 to 20

50  EQU IPM ENT T ODAY | September 2016 ET0916_50-52_LiftEquipment_CB.indd 50

ft. in the air inside a building, or are you working 150 to 180 ft. in the air on a bridge or stadium?” asks Corey Raymo, global category director, JLG Industries. “Boom lifts come in a variety of heights to 185 ft. so there are a lot of choices.” Knowing how far and where you need to reach will influence boom type. “For jobs that demand long reach or high capacity, telescopic booms should be your first choice,” says Adam Hailey, Genie product manager, Terex AWP. “For jobs that are in difficult to reach, tight spaces, articulated booms will be your best bet.” Articulated booms provide the ability to reach up and out. “If you are working on the side of a building, a straight (telescoping) boom will be just fine,” Raymo notes. “But if you need to work on the top of a warehouse or to reach into a building, an articulated boom will be needed.”

JOBSITE INFLUENCES Jobsite conditions play a role

The Genie Z-60/37FE articulated boom combines advanced diesel power, four-wheel-drive performance and low-weight electric power, making it suited for both indoor and outdoor applications. when matching a boom lift to an application. “Knowing any specific restrictions to a jobsite — such as emissions, terrain, hostile environments — can help determine any features or options that may be required,” says Hailey.

“Available configurations like hybrid power, 4x4 drive with active oscillating axles and hostile environment packages mean that nearly any job can be accessed safely and efficiently when the right equipment is provided.” Whether the job is indoors

Difficult to reach jobs in tight spaces tend to favor the use of articulated lifts such as this JLG X770AJ compact crawler boom.

L IF T EQU IPMENT

CRITERIA FOR WORKING AT EXTREME HEIGHTS Special considerations must be given when working at or near the maximum heights available with today’s boom lifts. “You need to be extra careful when working at extreme heights,” says JLG’s Corey Raymo. “Tasks are a little more difficult, and any little movement from the machine below translates into a bigger movement above.” Smooth control is essential. “You don’t want any fast movements, or your boom to jerk around,” says Raymo. “When you are that high in the air, operator confidence and comfort become important,” he continues. Part of this is ensuring relevant information about machine operation is relayed to the operator. “Clear error messages, clear machine statuses, etc., let the operator know what is going on with the machine, which translates to added confidence. Our larger booms come standard with an LCD panel that provides more text information... to let the operator know where he is in the work envelope.” There are also added dimensions associated with extreme reach capability. “The higher you need to reach, the bigger and heavier the lift gets when compared to machines used for lower heights,” says Corey Connolly, Skyjack. “The impact of these specifications needs to be taken into consideration when evaluating the size of the jobsite and the surroundings of the machine, e.g., structures, other equipment, hazards, etc.” Snorkel’s Matthew Elvin agrees, noting, “Larger booms tend to weigh more and have a larger footprint, requiring additional logistics planning on site. Additionally, as with all booms, contractors should consider any work area obstacles, such as overhead obstructions. For working at extreme heights, it also becomes very important to evaluate the distance between the operator and the work area, as many larger booms have restricted working envelopes.” To maximize productivity, Adam Hailey, Terex AWP, recommends evaluating the speed and capacity of the lift. “Jobs done at extreme height need special consideration when determining how to accomplish the work in as safe and productive a manner as possible,” he says. “When it is necessary to regularly go up and down to retrieve tools or materials, the speed and capacity of a machine really make a difference.” Hailey points out that the Genie SX-180 Super Boom has a 750-lb. capacity throughout its full working envelope, and can cycle from ground to full height in under four minutes. It can also be driven at full height and features a rotating jib for positioning workers and gear. The ability to achieve such fast cycle times is important. “If you have to go up to 185 ft., it can take a while to get there,” Raymo comments. “[JLG’s] biggest unit can cycle in four to five minutes. If a machine is 50% slower than that and takes 10 minutes, that can be a significant loss in productivity.”

WHEN YOU ARE THAT HIGH IN THE AIR, OPERATOR CONFIDENCE AND COMFORT BECOME IMPORTANT.

or outdoors can determine if a unit with a gas or diesel engine, electric motor or a combination of both is the best solution. “Depending on the jobsite, there may be restrictions that limit what machine is acceptable or not,” says Corey Connolly, product manager, Skyjack. “Indoor applications may prohibit the use of engine-powered machines, and thus require the use of an electric or hybrid lift.” That said, the availability of power on site can affect equipment needs, particularly as it relates to electric booms. “If you have an electric machine that needs to be charged, and there is no power on site yet, you’ll need a generator or a combustion or hybrid machine,” Raymo notes. Size and weight restrictions further influence lift selection. “It will have an impact on which models can be safely used on the job,” says Matthew Elvin, CEO, Snorkel. “For example, on an indoor project with restricted floor loadings, the only option may be a lightweight

affect machine dimensions, such as height and width. “If you’re working in tight quarters, such as inside a warehouse or between buildings, you might want to choose a more compact machine,” says Raymo. “Our compact crawler units have booms and outriggers on the chassis that fold in. You can go above 80 ft., but still fit through a doorway.” Terrain becomes an issue in outdoor applications. “On a rough-terrain outdoor site, a boom lift with four-wheel drive and high-grip tires would be required,” says Elvin. “The terrain also often has an impact on the size of booms available, as machines suitable for indoor use tend to reach up to 40 ft., whereas a diesel boom with rough-terGround conditions must be taken into rain capabilities can consideration when evaluating tire, drivetrain and reach up to 185 ft.”

electric articulated boom, such as the Snorkel A38E.” Note that total weight goes beyond the machine. “When you consider capacity requirements, don’t forget to include the weight of personnel, materials and tools,” Connolly advises. Also consider the dimensions of the work area. Pay attention to any entryway/access restrictions that can

machine weight requirements/restrictions.

Features are built into today’s boom lifts to ensure safer operation. For example, Snorkel Guard consists of a springloaded rail that cuts out machine operation if the operator is involuntarily pressed against the platform controls.

Ground conditions factor into the equation when evaluating tire, drivetrain and machine weight requirements/restrictions, says Connolly. Skyjack uses an axle-based drive on all of its 40-, 60- and 80-ft. booms so that driving on more rugged ground conditions is much easier for the operator to navigate. “If the ground is soft or sandy, a typical boom with standard tires may not do well,” notes Raymo. “In these ground conditions, a contractor may want to consider a tracked boom, or one with high-flotation tires that spread out the weight of the boom to improve travel.” Jobsite accessibility and condition can also change as the work progresses. “Versatile machines can sometimes mean a significant advantage in getting work done efficiently and cost effectively,” says Hailey. “On a jobsite that may require significant work on unimproved surfaces at the onset, and then work on a flat level slab in an enclosed area for later stages, multiple machines would typically be used,” he comments. “Most booms in the 45- to 85-ft. range offer significant performance on rough and uneven terrain and would be able to access nearly any area around an early jobsite. For work done in enclosed areas, electric machines will be able to work efficiently with limited exhaust or noise emission.” Lifts such as the Genie Z-60/37FE articulated boom offer both of these capabilities in a single unit. “It offers two machines in one package for indoor and outdoor

applications,” says Hailey, “combining the benefits of advanced diesel power, four-wheeldrive performance and low-weight, electric power.”

ENHANCE SAFETY AND EASE OF USE Sometimes, how high or how far you need to reach to get to a work area is only half the equation. “On many jobsites around the world, how you will get the machine to the working area is a consideration in and of itself,” says Hailey. “Many features, like the extending Genie X-Chassis design, zero tailswing or variable steering modes mean that even the largest machines can dexterously maneuver and work around tight jobsites or in confined spaces.” Connolly notes that accessories can make jobs easier and safer to complete. For example, Skyjack offers a range of Accessoryzers — factory warrantied and tested accessories and attachments — that improve machine performance and allow work to be undertaken more efficiently. Elvin agrees, adding that Snorkel offers power-to-platform outlets that remove the need for external power leads that can be a hazard on the jobsite. New boom lifts, such as the 660SJ, are fitted with power-to-platform outlets as standard.

Tried and true? You bet. With unmatched durability and performance, you can count on your IMT® equipment to have your back everyday. That’s commitment. Nothing Says Commitment Like The Diamond.™ www.imt.com

Consider both underfoot conditions and work area constraints when choosing a lift. Shown is a Snorkel A46JRT articulated boom lift designed for rough terrain. Features and accessories that improve jobsite safety are critically important, as well, says Raymo. He cites JLG’s SkyGuard control panel protection system, which stops and temporarily reverses most functions that were in use at the time the system is activated. “It’s basically a sensing system that serves as a secondary guarding system to help avoid entrapment,” he explains. Snorkel offers Snorkel Guard as standard for booms with working heights above 40 ft. The spring-loaded rail cuts out the machine operation if the operator is involuntarily pressed against the platform controls. “Safety is a key consideration when selecting equipment,” says Elvin. “There are a number of safety devices available to provide additional levels of protection for operators.” Reliability and ease of operation are also important. “A machine that is constantly down or is too complex to service and operate leads to unwanted downtime and associated costs,” says Connolly. While safety features and accessories are important, Hailey says it’s critical to develop a detailed plan for the application. “When selecting the equipment for any job, a detailed plan of how the work is going to be done in a safe and efficient manner should always be the first step,” he emphasizes. “This includes understanding the hazards and restrictions that may be present on a site, as well as any obstacles that may make normal access difficult. “Understanding where a working area will be accessed from — how far to reach out, up, over or down — as well as what tools will be needed to do the work can help further refine the machine selection,” he adds. “A solid plan coupled with the right gear is the best path to completing the job safely and on time.” ET

Technologies Can Make Drivers and Operators

BETTER AND SAFER Telematics, payload weighing and operator attentiveness systems create data that’s changing performance boundaries.

T

oday’s technology gives construction companies new tools that mean supervisors no longer have to rely exclusively on operators’ perspectives to explore the limits of equipment productivity and safety. Without telematics, payload weighing and operator attentiveness systems, the only people who know exactly what’s happening on a project’s machines is their operators. The situation does not offer a lot of opportunity for operating refinements that improve safety and production. But now there are sensors on machines that record events such as extreme braking or engine overspeed, and telematics technologies that wirelessly communicate data and send alerts to managers. Payload weighing systems keep tabs on loader bucket and truckbed loads. There are even cameras that recognize operators’ head, eye and mouth positions, and decide when an operator is nodding off, or inattentive to the job. These technologies share the knowledge of what’s going on in equipment to an unprecedented number of people. Your most important asset is still in the seat, however, and the crucial next step is finding the most effective way to apply operating insights to improve project safety, productivity and profits.

or distracted. “It doesn’t care why you’re tired or what happened before. All it knows is that it’s watching your facial features — your eyes, mouth and face. And if you start to nod off it says, ‘Hey this guy’s eyes are closing. He’s falling asleep, and I’m going to alarm him.’” The remarkable technology — often used in mines that operate around the clock — is tied into actuators in the cab that can sound an alarm and vibrate the operator’s seat much like the lane-departure warnings in today’s automobiles. The system is set up to report exceptions (suspected fatigue events) and deliver video of the event to Caterpillar Safety personnel who evaluate it and pass it on, as necessary, to the customer’s designated representative. A crucial element of changing operator

behaviors, rather than starting a cascade of creative camera malfunctions, is what Dawson calls a customer’s “fatigue intervention plan.” The plan, developed with the DSS customer, clearly outlines how to interact with an operator who has a fatigue event. “One of the keys is that fatigue is no longer a disciplinary issue — it’ more an opportunity for coaching,” Dawson says. “Maybe the first step is to have dispatch call the operator to say, ‘Hey are you OK? Do you need a break?’” If an operator has a second event on a shift, the intervention plan may call for a supervisor to go out to meet face to face. Again, Dawson emphasizes that the object of the meeting is not discipline, but to evaluate the operator’s condition and collaborate

Inside Caterpillar’s 24/7 Monitoring Center, analysts correlate data about the health and productivity of operators and equipment to reveal the magnitude of conditions such as fatigue and distraction and their impact on operations.

COACHING REPLACES DISCIPLINE “The Cat Driver Safety System (DSS) (ForConstructionPros.com/12098763) is really your last line of defense,” says Todd Dawson, project manager at Caterpillar’s fatigue services group, describing a video technology that employs a camera in the cab that watches for signs that a driver is fatigued

on a solution, such as taking a break to get some coffee or moving to a different piece of equipment. “What’s interesting is that as you make people aware that they are falling asleep, they start to change a lot of their behaviors at work and at home, Dawson notes. “They try to get better rest at home, bring foods that are a little better at helping them stay awake while they’re on shift or they’ll ask for a break if they really start to feel tired. Collaborating over data provided by technology to improve operators’ work may be the most productive lesson learned by DSS users. Machine technology is changing the way everybody looks at operating performance because the detailed data has only been available for a short time. Very few operators have any experience with monitoring technologies, and aside from the rare production study done by a handful of experts, there have been almost no authoritative sources of information to raise the bar that operators set for themselves.

TELEMATICS PROVIDES FODDER FOR TOOLBOX TALKS Modifying operator behavior may not be the first priority when implementing telematics data into operations. The easiest ways to learn to use and manage the data, and the quickest return on investment for most contractors probably come from measuring and optimizing hours of operation, machine location and engine idling time. But once you’re up and running comfortably with those basics, the fault code histories that telematics systems collect can help identify operators’ misconceptions about machine operation. For example, Tier 4 emissions technology that is onboard diesel machines can require regeneration of exhaust filters. If a regeneration cycle has to take place at the end of a shift, the machine is designed to keep running until the regen process is complete even if the operator has switched it off. “If you were to shut your truck off and it kept running, it would kind of freak you out a little bit, right? says Craig Cutting, system application rep for Caterpillar’s Product Link telematics. “So you might keep turning that key to kill the machine. It will work, but once you kill the engine, then the regen process stops before it is finished. It’s one of those things that may not hurt the machine the first four or five times when you do it, but if you do it enough, it’s going to need a technician to come out and fix the machine. Telematics systems allow reports of the previous day’s fault codes to be scheduled so they’re available first thing in the morning. “These fault codes

can turn into a morning toolbox talk before the operators get back onto the equipment, Cutting says. He recommends using it as a teaching moment. Operators need to know how the equipment operates and the company’s policy on how to avoid damage to the machines. “You can highlight solutions to some of the most common fault codes that you are seeing to help change the behavior on the jobsite, says Cutting. new machines can choose from three service-related options: 1. Self-service — Qualifying customers can perform warranty repairs at their own facilities and get reimbursed for labor (at $110 per labor hour) and at full MSRP for parts. IronDirect will also pay up to $300 in travel expenses per claim. 2. Dealer service — Customers can select any pre-authorized dealer or service provider they prefer. If the preferred dealer or service provider is not pre-authorized, they can apply through IronDirect.com’s self-service portal. 3. Service via authorized service partners — IronDirect has set up authorized service partner locations throughout the U.S., Canada and Mexico. “Service Your Way allows [customers] to work most efficiently with whatever capacity they have available,” says Andy Clevenger, vice president of operations, IronDirect. This includes working on equipment from day one — while it’s under warranty — after completing the qualification process. Service support is accessed via the DirectAssist app. The standard DirectTrac telematics system provides another avenue to monitor machine status, maintain its health and manage service and repair. “We put our proprietary telematics system on every machine that we

sell,” says Frank. However, IronDirect takes a slightly different approach than traditional equipment suppliers. “We use that tool to manage that asset, directly monitoring the life and the events that are going on with that asset.” IronDirect technical support then utilizes the data provided to expedite repairs, offer application engineering support and fulfill its parts commitment. “Because telematics is delivered directly from us to the customer, we can stay directly in communication with the customer,” says Frank. Logistics management can be facilitated through the proprietary AssetZone software. Any parts required for repair or service can be ordered at IronDirect. com (or via SmartEquip) with guaranteed overnight delivery. “If the machine fails and we don’t get you that part within 48 hours, we will pay for a replacement rental machine,” Frank assures.

of equipment purchased on IronDirect.com, the lower the fees when reselling machines. Even with the access afforded by Liquidity Services, there are admittedly some hurdles for the site to attract a more targeted used equipment buyer base. However, Frank is confident in its potential for growth. “We expect to be a very large player in the used equipment market online,” he states. ET

Since opening its first asphalt plant in Detroit in 1961, it has become an industry leader and the No. 1 asphalt company in southeastern Michigan and Florida’s Gulf Coast. Today, the family-owned company operates seven asphalt plants in Florida, and produces approximately 1.5 million tons of hot mix asphalt. Recently, Ajax Paving Industries of Florida invested in a mobile crushing and screening spread, which allows it to process reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) when and where it needs it. The company

anticipates producing between 500,000 to 600,000 tons of RAP in 2016. “Processing RAP in Florida is critical,” says Vince Hafeli, vice president of plants and materials for AJAX in Florida. “All producers process RAP and all producers need a high quantity of RAP to be competitive and to get work in this state.” Ajax first began considering investing in a mobile crushing and screening spread to process its own RAP material more than eight years ago. But it wasn’t until 2015 that the company took the next step and purchased an FT4250 impact crusher, GT205S screen and 13-3080 80-ft. conveyor from KPI-JCI and Astec Mobile Screens. The FT4250 track-mounted impactor plant is part of the continuous crushing and tracking impactor family, featuring an Andreas Series Impact Crusher. The GT205S is a track-mounted screening plant with a low profile and compact design with easy access to all controls for setup. Ajax uses the FT4250 in an open-circuit configuration along with the GT205S and 13-3080 conveyor. The process starts

In 2015, Ajax Paving Industries of Florida purchased an FT4250 impact crusher, GT205S screen and 13-3080 80-ft. conveyor from KPI-JCI and Astec Mobile Screens. The equipment is used in an open-circuit configuration. with the broken up asphalt pavement entering the impactor, where it is crushed then fed to the screen’s feed hopper. From there, it is screened to a 1/2-in. minus finished product. Any overs — typically 7% to 10% of the original material — are fed from the middle-deck screen back to the impactor, where it is crushed again to make a finished product. This product is then conveyed and stockpiled to be added to the asphalt plant.

EXCEEDING EXPECTATIONS Before processing its own RAP material, Ajax relied solely on subcontractors to crush its material. After careful consideration, the company determined it could crush the same material for at least the same cost, if not cheaper, than what it was contracting out. Production was key, as Ajax had to be able to beat the subcontractors’ production and expense numbers to make the venture work.

In order for the equipment to meet the company’s production goals, the crusher had to be capable of processing between 200 to 225 tph of RAP; Ajax is currently permitted to produce up to 300 tph in Florida. Initially, Ajax anticipated it would be able to process 60% of the material it uses annually. Now, the company forecasts it will be able to process upwards of 80% because it is able to achieve more production from the equipment than it originally estimated. “We’re running at an average of 290 tph, and when we’ve experimented, we’ve found we could produce up to 450 tph,” Hafeli says. “So the equipment has greatly exceeded what they told us it would be able to do.” Meeting a production metric was only one factor in the decision-making process, says Hafeli. The equipment had to be highly mobile, since Ajax’s jobsites tend to be located in tight, urban spaces. The

“AS STRANGE AS THIS SOUNDS, THE PROCESS OF GETTING INTO CRUSHING RAP HAS FORCED US TO UP OUR GAME, AND IMPROVE OUR QUALITY, AS WELL,”

Any overs from the crushing process are fed from the middle-deck screen back to the impactor, where it is crushed again to make a finished product. This product is then conveyed and stockpiled to be added to the asphalt plant. company also sought a manufacturer that could serve as a single-source provider for all its equipment needs. “When we began looking for a trackmounted screen to go with our impact crusher, the GT205S was an easy choice,” Hafeli says. “With other manufacturers that we looked at, we could buy a crusher from them, but the conveyors and screen plants didn’t come from them. We wanted a onestop shop, so if we had an issue, there was only one company to deal with.”

SIGNIFICANT SAVINGS Once convinced of the equipment’s capabilities, it was time to test it out in the field. Ajax initially hoped to just break even, which would allow it to become independent of subcontractors and control the quality and quantity of the material. However, it soon realized it was achieving a significant cost savings of up to 50% of what it was paying subcontractors. The company also discovered it was able to increase the amount of RAP used in its mix by 5%, which Hafeli says adds up to enormous annual savings. The asphalt pavement

processed in the Gulf Coast is composed of Florida limestone, Canadian granite and hard limestone imported from various islands. Florida limestone materials tend to be high in fines content, creating additional challenges when processing RAP. Ajax currently makes a 1/2-in.-minus RAP product that meets Florida DOT specs. “By operating our own equipment, we’re able to experiment and do things that we traditionally have not been able to get a subcontractor to do for us,” Hafeli comments. “For example, some of the materials that we process are high in fines content and dust. We’ve been able to experiment with screens and change processes a little bit to allow us to process the RAP differently, which allows us to get a larger quantity of RAP into our mix. So not only is there a cost savings on the processing side, but we’re able to achieve a cost savings on the production side, as well.” Another unforeseen benefit has been the stronger relationships formed

between the various production areas within the company. “As strange as this sounds, the process of getting into crushing RAP has forced us to up our game, and improve our quality, as well,” Hafeli notes. “Before when independent subcontractors came in, they did their thing and we took what they gave us and we made it work. “Now, by owning our own equipment, it has forced our quality control team, our plant foreman of the asphalt plants and the foreman of the crushing operation to work more closely together as a team,” he notes. “That has led to a better product for our customers and a more successful company as a whole.” ET

HUSQVARNA PP 490 - BIG POWER IN A COMPACT PACKAGE The Husqvarna PP 490 is the only power pack you need to run most of Husqvarna’s high frequency equipment. The PP 490 makes it possible to use one power pack for a complete job - start to finish. This gives you flexibility to run a wall saw for one part of your project, and then use a power cutter or chainsaw - all with one power pack, meaning less equipment to bring to and from the job site. The power pack is perfect for use with the WS 482 HF wall saw, CS 10 wire saw as well as the PRIME K 6500 power cutter, K 6500 Ring power cutter, K 6500 Chain saw and DM 650 drill motor.

The process starts with broken up asphalt pavement entering the impactor, where it is crushed and fed to the screen’s feed hopper. From there, it is screened to a 1/2-in. minus finished product.

Shingle Grinding Generates Environmental and Economic

SHINGLE SAVINGS Here’s a look at what recycling shingles can do for your company and our environment: • Every ton of shingles recycled saves 1 cu. yd. of airspace in a landfill.

BENEFITS

• Normal asphalt roof shingles processed through a grinder will contain 18% to 20% asphalt cement (AC). • For every ton of shingles recycled, a 55-gal. barrel of oil is conserved. • Each ton of shingles recycled produces approximately 8 lbs. of nails. The nails are then recycled like scrap steel. • Nearly 2 million tons of RAS were put to use in new pavements in the U.S. in 2014, saving taxpayers more than $2.8 billion.

Wolf Paving adds shingle grinding to its plant operations to save both resources and money.

A

ccording to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, over 11 million tons of recyclable asphalt shingles end up in landfills every year in the U.S., amounting to over 8% of the nation’s total building-related waste. The asphalt industry, ever a champion of recycling, has been trying to reduce the environmental impact of shingles by grinding them up and putting them back into roads instead of in landfills, making both environmental and economic sense. In 2014, over 2 million tons of Recycled Asphalt Shingles (RAS) were put to use in new U.S. pavements, saving taxpayers more than $2.8 billion. Wolf Paving, based in Oconomowoc, WI, is helping the industry contribute to those savings. Wolf Paving performs paving and engineering services, sweeping, crack filling and sealing and soil and materials testing, and supplies asphalt/aggregate throughout Southeastern Wisconsin. In 2010, it partnered with Badger Materials Recycling, LLC to start taking advantage

of the boom in recycled materials. Over the past six years, Wolf Paving has recycled over 85,000 tons of shingles to put back into its mix designs, saving the company money and making it more sustainable.

SHINGLE GRINDING PROCESS Wolf Paving has two asphalt plants, one in Oconomowoc and another in Sun Prairie, WI, which produce asphalt for projects that range from driveways to WISDOT highways. The company knew it needed to find an alternative source of oil for its mixes. “RAS is a green product. [In addition to] recycling a product that was going to the landfill, it can reduce costs and strengthen

the new asphalt being produced,” says Sean Wolf, vice president of Wolf Paving. “It’s all about recoverable oil. Through the shingles we receive and process, there’s about 25% recoverable oil in them. That’s what makes it economical.” Wolf Paving receives shingles from independent roofing companies as well as roll-off dumpster companies from all over the tristate area. Contractors bring the shingles to Wolf Paving and pay a nominal fee for the recycling. Even adding in transport costs, contractors pay less than they would to dispose of the shingles at a landfill. When the shingles are ready to be processed, they are first fed to a handler. “Every shingle is hand touched,” says Michael Ettner at Badger Materials. “We are heavily involved with the sorting in order to remove contaminants [like plastic and wood] and ensure a good quality material is produced.” Once sorted, the materials are processed through an RG-1 Rotochopper shingle

Shingles are first fed into a conveyor and then hand sorted to remove contaminants such as plastic and wood to ensure a good quality end product.

Through shingle grinding, Wolf Paving has recycled 85,000 tons of shingles in six years, reducing its need for 85,000 barrels of oil and keeping 140 cu. yds. of shingle material out of landfills.

In addition to recycling shingles, Wolf Paving recycles concrete, metal, plastic and wood. A recently purchased B-66 SP Rotochopper grinder can accept both shingles and wood waste. grinder. The processed material has nails removed by a magnetic conveyor, and oversized materials are sent to another conveyor to be re-processed. Wolf Paving processes the shingles to 3/8 in. and stores them under cover to maintain consistency and keep moisture out until it’s ready to be added into a mix design. The company also supplies their RAP to several other asphalt producers in the state of Wisconsin. In addition to the shingles, Wolf Paving recycles concrete, metal, plastic and even wood. It recently purchased a B-66 SP Rotochopper grinder that can accept both shingles and wood for increased recycling and profit opportunities. “Contractors who bring us shingles will most likely already have wood from pallets, and the shingles also have wood debris on them, so this type of grinder made sense for us to buy,” Wolf says. “Now we’re accepting other wood building materials from contractors to recycle.” The wood materials are ground up and used as mulch and even bedding for horses. Wolf Paving is able to charge contractors a minimal fee that covers the sorting and cleaning costs — again less expensive than disposing

of the materials at a landfill — and makes a profit from the materials once they are recycled. “We see waste as opportunities for growth,” Ettner says. “Recycling saves resources and creates jobs. It’s a win-win.” Almost all of the mixes Wolf Paving produces contain some percentage of RAS.

Throughout the course of the year, Wolf estimates that about 3% of every mix design produced will have some RAS in it. “We’re constantly looking for new ways to incorporate recycled materials into our asphalt that can help the environment, that we can divert from landfills and that can make our asphalt better,” says Wolf. How Attachments SIMPLIFIED DEMOLITION of Building Built into Bluff backfilled to keep the bluff face intact and ready for new construction.”

UPWARDLY PRODUCTIVE

Attachments keep the removal of a huge Minnesota office building/ county jail complex on pace.

T

he former West Publishing headquarters, built in 1886, and the Ramsey County Adult Detention Center (ADC), built in 1979, were mainstays of the St. Paul, MN, riverfront landscape. Sitting on 3.9 acres, the massive 700,000-sq.-ft., seven-structure complex had outlived its usefulness when West relocated to a suburb, and the jail was quickly deemed inadequate. Repeated efforts to sell the property were hindered by the daunting thought of demolishing the existing structures, which rise up to 10 stories from the base of a riverside bluff, and years of on-again, off-again government tenants that finally led to the complex sitting vacant for several years. Recognizing the property’s tax revenue potential, Ramsey County committed to undertaking the demolition and, when the bidding process was complete, St. Michael, MN-based Rachel Contracting had the job. The eight-story ADC was the first structure slated to come down. Work on it started in August 2015 with interior demolition,

A Genesis GDT Razer is mounted on a Volvo EC700C HR excavator with a high-reach package that provides just over 105 ft. of reach. according to Mark Kraemer, Rachel’s vice president of field operations. “The interior work included asbestos abatement, followed by removal of any remaining hazardous materials, as well as municipal solid waste and other debris,” he says. “What makes this job different from most others, however, is the fact that the structures are essentially built right into the side of a bluff alongside the Mississippi River,” Kraemer points out. “So with the preliminary interior work completed, we moved into a bluff stabilization phase. For that, we had crews core drill into the back wall of the building, install 40-ft. threaded rods, and inject each core with grout to secure the structure to the bluff during demolition. “Once demolition is complete,” he adds, “a new concrete wall will be built and

The height of the structures, more than 90 ft. in most areas, coupled with their proximity to active pedestrian, vehicle and train traffic, eliminated the use of any of the more traditional demolition techniques, such as implosion or a wrecking ball. “Our options were definitely limited by our surroundings. An active Amtrak line runs as close as 25 ft. to one side of the jail, and one corner of the structure is just feet from the heavily traveled Wabasha Street Bridge,” notes Kraemer. The company turned to a high-reach excavator outfitted with a GDT Razer 290 from Genesis Attachments. “We have the GDT mounted on a Volvo EC700C HR, a 195,000-lb. base machine with the highreach package,” Kraemer says. “That configuration affords us just over 105 ft. of reach, more than enough for even the uppermost reaches of the ADC structure.” Material encountered during the ADC portion of the demo included 10-in.-thick two-way concrete slabs reinforced with #4 rebar at 10 in. on center each way. The structure also included a parking garage that had 12-in. concrete slabs. “We also processed 1.5-sq.-ft. reinforced concrete columns, and concrete waffle slabs measuring 12 in. deep, with a 19-in. dome, 5-in.-wide ribs and a 3 5/8-in. topping slab,” Kraemer says. As the project continues, the company will eventually be far enough into the structure that it will be at street level and facing Kellogg Avenue, a major east-west artery in downtown St. Paul, and still another logistical challenge. Remaining highly controlled in every aspect of the demolition process, says Kraemer, has not only been key to production, it’s helped ensure a safe operation.

INVALUABLE CONTROL At 7,000 lbs., the GDT Razer is light enough to be very maneuverable, even at peak heights, yet still provide the power needed for effective concrete cracking. According to Rachel’s project

The bulk of material processing is being done using a combination of a Genesis LXP 300 Logix Processor and a GDR 300 Demolition Recycler, plus a Demo Pro 900. All three attachments are mounted on CAT excavators.

superintendent, Jim Jude, that maneuverability is being put to the test on the ADC facet of the job. “The jail’s overall footprint is a strange zig-zag shape, but the interior of the structure also has hallways and walls that seem to run in every direction,” he says. “Through a combination of the attachment’s rotation and its design, the GDT Razer is able to easily access every area we need to get at, then crack and drop the concrete material. It will also be great to have that degree of control when we are at the part of the structure where the tie-backs are present. Being able to trim in these areas without fear of messing with the tie-backs will be a real plus.” For added versatility, the number and location of crushing teeth on the attachment can be customized to meet project needs. In addition, the bolt-on teeth can be interchanged and reversed front to back, increasing their life and lowering the cost of operation. Jude says the position of the pin centers on the tool make it easier for him to roll it back to get under a beam. “That alone has helped keep things moving out here,” he adds.

actual demolition on some of the lower, more accessible areas of these structures. We like that they are multifaceted in what they can do and use it to our advantage whenever possible.” The St. Paul project includes more than just the Ramsey County Jail. Next on the list is the one-time West Publishing complex of buildings, now called the Ramsey County Government Center (RCGC). The RCGC sits adjacent to the jail, is roughly three times its size and presents the same logistical challenges as the ADC. “The RCGC complex represents the bulk of the 700,000 sq. ft. of demolition,”

Kraemer says. “And because it was added onto repeatedly in its 130-year history, there are different types of construction evident, some with much more structural steel, for example. However, because of who we are as a company and the way we approach projects like this, we are equipped to tackle anything we encounter.” The demolition is slated for a Spring 2017 completion. ET Information and images for this article were first published in Demolition Magazine and are being reused with permission from the National Demolition Association.

THE REST OF THE CAST While the GDT Razer has fourway indexable blades for cutting rebar in the structures, the bulk of the actual material processing is being done using a combination of additional Genesis tools. These include an LXP 300 Logix Processor and a GDR 300 Demolition Recycler, each mounted on a Caterpillar 336E, and a Demo Pro 900 on a Caterpillar 349. “The other attachments will be pulling double-duty on this project,” Kraemer says. “In addition to processing the more than 100,000 tons of concrete and brick we expect to encounter here, they will also be doing

Clark managed the pre-construction contingent and Terence Anderson, vice president of estimating for The Berg Corporation, helped take it from there. The team’s delicate but aggressive mission included taking out every other floor of the Washington Design Center, adding 5 ft. of additional depth to the basement and removing the roof, plus demolishing the 1982, 50,000-sq.-ft. The Washington Office Center also demanded extensive structural work on the underground parking area and foundation walls.

remote-controlled Brokk demolition machines for the bulk of the selective building demolition. The compact machines feature a three-part arm that provides the needed precision with optimal power and reach, and can be equipped with numerous attachments. “The floor load would not allow mini-excavators, so this was really a problem that could only be solved by a robotic demolition machine,” says Christopher Trendell, vice president of operations at The Berg Corporation. “There is a dramatic amount of variance in the construction of both buildings, and both of them are extremely light loading capacity. The Brokks offered the heavy hitting power on a lightweight carriage.

“Using the machines in this application was the most efficient and productive means,” he continues, “and it certainly reduced labor costs by decreasing the number of employees needed, while also reducing the duration of our time on the job.”

STEP-BY-STEP AND FLOOR-BY-FLOOR Kevin Durbin, a supervisor for The Berg Corporation, chose a half-dozen Brokk models from the company’s fleet to complete each phase of bracing and demolition. His choices focused on getting the strongest hydraulic capabilities possible for each weight-restricted area. For example, the 3,500-lb. 160 model broke holes into the building’s support columns so steel plates

he Museum of the Bible is an $800 million endeavor funded primarily by Hobby Lobby’s president, Steve Green. Scheduled to open to the public in Fall 2017, the museum will sit approximately two blocks from the National Mall in Washington, D.C. A 1920s refrigeration warehouse and neighboring buildings are being converted into a 430,000-sq.-ft. display case for Green’s trove of nearly 44,000 Biblical pieces. The project involved months of study and collaboration between The Berg Corporation,

The way Berg’s management team saw it, there were two ways to tackle the project. They could use skid-steer loaders with hammer attachments along with operators on handheld jackhammers and rivet busters, or they could bring in lightweight, remote-controlled demolition equipment to do the heavy hitting and small skid-steer loaders to quickly remove the debris. The first option carried the risk of exposing employees to ongoing fall hazards and poor air quality. The use of remote-controlled demolition equipment would greatly reduce the risks to employees, as well as dramatically decrease labor costs and bring the schedule into line with the opening of the museum. Consequently, Berg chose

In less than four months, The Berg Corporation completed the multifaceted project, all while recycling a massive amount of material. The team sorted concrete to send to a remote crushing facility and steel to ship to a scrapyard for sizing and processing. The plan resulted in over 90% of the building contents (by weight) being recycled. The team was able to use the same small fleet of equipment by changing out attachments. “The Brokk unit

provides an easy and fast option for sorting through concrete and rebar, especially when compared to more traditional methods, such as handheld tools,” says Andrew Laurimore, general superintendent for The Berg Corporation. “It has powerful hydraulics and the wide range of arm movement helped our efficiency with moving the materials. The remote controls also kept our operators away from any high-risk areas.” As a whole, the remote-controlled machines proved the right choice for various aspects of the job. “My crew attacked the overall project faster, and could work longer than any person on a handheld tool,” Trendell comments. “It was certainly the most productive choice for this project.” ET

Make sure the cash flow statements are understandable so you know whether you need to speak to your banker about extending more credit to cover your new level of growth. Be aware that bankers do not like to cover 100% of growth capital and will require that you add something to the pot, as well. Not sure you can get the required financing to do the work? Then don’t take it on, and put another year of profits into your bank account to give it a try next year. Believe me, it beats the alternative. For example, if you don’t have any reserves in your bank account and take all the profits out of the business to buy equipment, you’re probably not a candidate to consider any meaningful expansion. Get your ducks in a row before you try it.

MAKE SURE REQUIRED RESOURCES ARE IN PLACE

Up to this point, we’ve been discussing internal growth without a need for additional funding. You can, of course, move it up a notch if you have collateral you can borrow against or have an investor that is willing to join forces with you. But even if you have the financial resources, you still need to plan out the program, and ensure that your system can handle the additional activity and you have the talent to complete and review the work being done. It’s easy to get a little sloppy using other peoples’ money, so be careful or you will be using up your own money sooner than you think. The construction business is a risky business to begin with. Let’s not add to that risk by taking on work you’re not able to fund, or costeffectively complete. Do your homework and you will sleep better. Business growth has two main requirements: 1. Capital and people, and 2. An industry-specific business plan that drills down to monthly cash flow requirements. ET

Profit After Tax x 100 / AR + Inventory - AP

I’m sure every one of you knows a contractor that took on more work than they could handle, and as a result ran out of money and closed up shop. If you could ask them what happened, they will likely say they ran out of cash and were unable to borrow more or contribute more to keep the business going. Needless to say, it pays to properly plan any thoughts of expanding your operation. Even if you are only expecting a 20% growth spurt, I would suggest you take the time to properly decide whether you can do that in a comfortable fashion. Take your time and don’t kid yourself. Throw in some cushion so you can sleep nights. Don’t forget to account for income taxes you will need to pay regarding income earned from the company business. You need to have a solid accounting system (one you understand) and a pretty good knowledge of the cash flow process. If either of these requirements are missing, you may want to have your accountant work it through for you.

There is a Growth Potential Index formula you can use to calculate how much you can expand your business using internally generated funds:

PLAN AHEAD TO GET SYSTEMS AND FINANCING IN PLACE

Make sure you have the necessary resources to avoid getting caught short. hings are going great. Business is good. Revenues are better than last year and you expect higher revenues again in 2017. Things could not be better. Maybe. A word of caution: Every dollar of sales requires some working capital to support it. In other words, the more you sell, the more working capital you need to support that increase in business. Think about it. You incur expenses before you start a project. You do the job and progress bill as you go along. But no matter how hard you try, the bills come due before you collect on your invoices. As a result, you need to have cash reserves or a line of credit to keep your cash flow positive. Believe it or not, you can sell yourself out of business. The business grows and at some point your capital position is unable to carry the load, the payable list gets longer, you use up your bank lines and you finally run out of cash. Next stop — bankruptcy court. There is a Growth Potential Index formula you can use to calculate how much you can expand your business using internally generated funds: Profit After Tax x 100 / AR + Inventory - AP If you plan to grow faster than this estimate reflects, you may have to put more capital in the business or be able to borrow more money to operate it.
