Full Sail Ahead for global captains of industry On September 28 - 29, 2010, the tenth Forbes Global CEO Conference took place in Sydney, Australia. Gathering some 400 global business and thought leaders, the theme of the conference was ‘Full Sail Ahead’. Returning to Sydney for the second time, the conference agenda focused on how business leaders were adapting their business models in the aftermath of the financial crisis. It also shone a spotlight on the best strategies to identify new growth opportunities in volatile times.

The Sydney Opera House converted the stage of its grand Concert Hall into an area for an exclusive cocktail reception for conference attendees. Delegates also enjoyed live entertainment, including a special performance by the Sydney Philharmonia Choirs.

FULL SAIL AHEAD September 28 – 29, 2010 Forbes talks: An interview with Kristina Keneally, Premier of New South Wales. On the first day of the conference, Steve Forbes conducted a Meeting of Minds with the Premier of New South Wales, Kristina Keneally, on Australia’s economic resilience through the crisis and in particular the relative strengths of New South Wales. The Premier attributed the state’s success to important initiatives such as a commitment to maintain a triple A credit rating, investment in public infrastructure, lower payroll taxes, building trade ties with China, and providing investment opportunities in sectors such as financial services and education, as well as in the unique, large-scale commercial and residential development project in Barangaroo.

Forbes Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Carlos Slim Helú, Chairman of Fundación Telmex, Fundación Carlos Slim, Impulsora del Desarrollo del Empleo en América Latina and Cicsa. Ranked #1 on Forbes’ 2010 World’s Billionaires list with a net worth of $53.5 billion, Mr. Slim was honored as a hero of entrepreneurial capitalism. At the award ceremony, Steve interviewed Mr. Slim on his upbringing, investment philosophy and opportunities in sectors such as media and telecommunications. Mr. Slim shared his views on philanthropy and remarked that he preferred to fight poverty by creating jobs. He also commented, “There is a saying that we should leave a better country to our children. But it’s more important to leave better children to our country.”

FULL SAIL AHEAD September 28 – 29, 2010 A Meeting of Minds: Steve Forbes talks to Senator Penny Wong, Minister of Finance and Deregulation, Australia. At the closing gala dinner, the Senator shared with Steve that the challenge for Australian leaders is to navigate day-to-day politics and still chart a course for the future. She remarked that while Australia weathered the storm better than most, the government must try to understand, and prepare for what lies ahead. She said it was important to invest in skills, productivity, and infrastructure.

Over the horizon: Steve Forbes talks to YB Dato Sri Mustapa Bin Mohamed, Minister, Ministry of International Trade and Industry, Malaysia. The Forbes Global CEO Conference will return to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on September 12 - 14, 2011. Dato Sri Mustapa attended the conference in Sydney to share with Steve Forbes and delegates what they can look forward to in next year’s event. He also highlighted Malaysia’s economic development and investment climate. Before the start of the conference, a cruise was organized by the N ew South Wales Government to tour Sydney’s harbor. Guests had the opportunity to view the major commercial, residential and leisure precinct developments and investments in Sydney, including the Barangaroo and White Bay waterfront urban renewal projects.
