Newsletter April 2022 After two years of working remotely, FGM fellows participate in face-to-face training.

After a long time of not attending the multidisciplinary training activities in person, the young high school scholarship recipients traveled to the city of Oaxaca. Joy was evident in each of their faces, but also anticipation and nervousness in those who for the first time were leaving their families and communities. The Guadalupe Musalem Fund planned everything to ensure their emotional tranquility, taking care of every detail to prioritize their health, with the collaboration of Campo A.C., which welcomed them in their facilities so that the week of training that took place from April 18 to 22 was a success. They were days of many learning experiences; the topics covered were related to human rights, feminism, leadership, emotional health, academic support and sexuality. The activities carried out were possible thanks to the generosity of the FGM donors, particularly of women and men who donated their time and shared their knowledge. To each and all our thanks. Read and find out about the subjects covered, with a brief description of the activities carried out.

1

Newsletter April 2022 Group Integration.

To break the ice and facilitate the integration of the young women from various regions of the state, Evi Hernández, a psychologist and collaborator of the FGM, facilitated “Conscious Walking” and “Interweaving Alliances”, excercises which which helped create an ambience of greater trust among the students. Three generations of grant recipients had up to then only met via teleconferences or online events.

Newsletter April 2022 Magic Circle and my Self-esteem.

After having interacted and shared the joy of meeting eath other, the fellows enjoyed a workshop that, as they say, has become a space in which to feel safe when expressing themselves. The facilitators Lina Herrera and Luz Elena Moctezuma motivated them to elaborate a “Tree of life”; in the roots, they named five people who have contributed to their self-esteem, in the trunk they defined five attributes that they like or value about themselves, in the branches they wrote five projects that they would like to achieve, and as fruits they listed their achievements. “It was a very pleasant experience, listening to them and being in front of all of them made it much more special. I learned how to make my own decisions, and that every decision, no matter how small it may seem, is important,” said Norma, from the Sierra Sur.

3

Newsletter April 2022 Meeting with tutors.

Monday concluded with awards being given to the students who, since the beginning of the year, have actively fulfilled their tasks and their online training. In addition, a celebration and meeting was held between tutors and interns, who shared “bread and salt”, school progress, family events, expectations for the end of high school, among subjects. At the Guadalupe Musalem Fund, for more than 26 years the scholarship recipients have had the support of mentors, generous women, with different professional profiles and diverse activities. They are an important pillar in the empowerment of young women who come from rural, indigenous and Afro-Mexican communities in Oaxaca. Before the COVID 19 pandemic, the students got together with their mentors once a month when they attended their multidisciplinary training. After two years, they were able to meet again in person. Some tutors and grantees met for the first time, since previously they only had online interactions.

4

Newsletter April 2022 Body and Territory.

On Tuesday the 19th, the first session was led by psychologist Mayra Callejas Pérez, who directed the students through body movements to activate their vital organs and become aware of their bodies, identify the pain that is generated by stress, and the importance of taking care of themselves not only individually, but also collectively. “I learned that women have the right to make decisions and not let others tell us what to do or not to do, regarding our bodies,” said Dulce Yaquelín from the Mixteca region.

5

Newsletter April 2022 Academic Support.

On the 19th and 20th, the students had the opportunity to have their questions answered and to learn new techniques for solving problems in mathematics, physics and chemistry, in addition to carrying out activities to strengthen mathematical logical thinking. The young women who are about to graduate from high school received preparation for their university admission exams. The academic support activities were taught by Alejandra Hernández Mazas, Graciela López Lazo, and Luz María Cuevas, teachers who collaborate with the Educational Intervention Consultancy coordinated by Sonia Bautista León, a graduate of the FGM. “I felt good, though a little nervous at the time of participating. I liked that we worked together and everything was very practical and fun, since this helps me develop more skills and attain more knowledge in several academic areas which reinforce my high school activities”, Marisol stated.

6

Newsletter April 2022 Identities, territories and bodies.

In order to help the young scholarship recipients strengthen their identity, Laura Escobar Colmenares led a workshop on “Cultural, gender and sexual identity.” One of the exercises consisted in the elaboration of a body map on which they painted oceans, rivers and forests; in their drawing they included five things that they want to sow and reap in their lives. “I liked it a lot because thanks to this workshop I learned about concept of identity and the activities we carried out such as the creation of a personal badge and how it affects us when someone changes it without one´s authorization. All this had a great impact on me”, commented Laura, from the Central Valleys.

7

Newsletter April 2022 Gender equality and equity.

For the Guadalupe Musalem Fund it is important for the scholarship recipients to recognize and be motivated by the contributions that their fellow graduates make in favor of “Gender Equality and Equity. Gabriela Salomé, also a graduate of the FGM, and currently the Director of Participation and Public Policies of the Secretariat for Women of Oaxaca, facilitated this subject. By means of various activities, the young women reflected on the difference between sex and gender, gender inequalities, stereotypes and discrimination, situations that exist in all societies and that prevent women from living a full life free of violence.

“I learned about so many subjects which I was familiar with but had only touched upon briefly. With my colleagues I learned that despite so many things that seemed to differentiate us, we are united by the desire to continue fighting for ourselves, for our families; and even when we may be criticized or branded as “crazy, or simply labelled by society, we should not accept that, we must always try harder and join forces with those around us, in order to truly be ourselves”, said Norma, from the Sierra Sur.

8

Newsletter April 2022 Pleasurable and responsible sexuality and pregnancy prevention.

With dynamics and examples from real life, the psychologist Betzabé Peralta Reyes explained the four dimensions of sexuality: reproduction, eroticism, affection, and gender. During several hours, she developed activities and excercises with the interns on important issues such as responsibility, and the way in which violence greatly influences women’s sexuality, for example: stereotypes about being women which condemn and pigeonhole the term “sexuality” Eraida expressed: “The facilitator made us aware of these issues the importance of being responsible, so we can prevent pregnancy and make sound decisions for our lives”.

9

Newsletter April 2022 Courtship with respect and love. Romantic love and “micromachismos”.

During this session, the teacher Itabico Cruz López, a specialist in this subject, addressed the stereotypes that exist around romantic love and the way in which they violate the dignity of women. She encouraged the fellows to be alert to situations of dating violence, to recognize its signs, and to strive for respectful and loving relationships. The most important thing in attaining this, she assured, must be self-love and being at peace with oneself. “I learned that we always have many different things that make us unique. Saying “No” is very important because it helps us to be stronger. We must keep in our minds that our rights are ours and to no one elses,” shared Jessica from the Sierra Sur.

10

Newsletter April 2022

Prevention of gender violence.

Iliana Araceli Hernández Gómez, a mentor and specialist in the defense of women and human rights, described the various types of violence that exist against women and girls, such as: verbal, psychological, digital, sexual, etc., and shared available data on the incidence of violence and deaths in the country and the state of Oaxaca. In a workshop facilitated by the State Attorney for the Defense of minors, women and the family, exercises were carried out to consolidate shared knowledge and creat consciousness on the worrying situation that currently exists. In this regard, Belén, originally from the Mixteca, expressed: “It is important to set limits to avoid violence, we all have the right to say the word “NO”.

11

Newsletter April 2022 Film debate: The legend of the whales.

Berta Martínez Sebastián, a graduate of the FGM (who recently returned to Oaxaca after completing her master’s degree in Chile), motivated her colleagues to ponder violence, stereotypes and gender roles that exist in all cultures and minimize the capacities of women. Analizing the film “The Legend of the Whales” (Nikki Caro, 2002, New Zealand), which tells the story of Paikea, a girl who faces her grandfather’s disapproval by trying to defy the tradition that dictates that it must be a man who leads the Whangara people (New Zealand), the fellows expressed their opinions and points of view. “Watching the film, made me realize many things, about values, diversity, how other people live, and, well, in the end, many of us were able to express our opinion, and I liked that a lot”, said Valeria, from Sierra Sur.

12

Newsletter April 2022 Young women’s leadership.

After four days of living together and strengthening their friendships, they young women happily participated in the workshop given by Diana Pérez and Daniela Hernández Velásquez, from the Committee on the Rights of Children and Adolescents (CONNAD). By means of games and theatrical performances, the fellows received information about the principles of the Convention on the Rights of Children and Adolescents: • • • •

Principle of non-discrimination Principle of always observing the best interests of children Principle of the right to life, survival and development Principle of participation and being heard “Sometimes, because we are young or are not yet 18, our opinion is not taken into account and we are led to believe we must remain silent, but we must not allow that to keep on happening,” Yalina pointed out.

13

Newsletter April 2022 Public speaking tools.

Very enthusiastic, taking notes and impressed by the force of the words of the actress and playwright Wagive Jiménez Turcott, the high school students learned that there are three elementary principles to speak in public: a neutral and relaxed posture, deep breathing and a supporting point for expressing the message. As practice to improve confidence and voice management, each one chose a subject of interest to present to their peers, under the specialist´s guidance. Jade, from the Sierra Norte, shared: “I loved this workshop because I have a hard time expressing myself and delivering my message powerfully.”

14

Newsletter April 2022 Digital communication tool for community work.

With the purpose of strengthening their leadership in various areas, and providing them with tools to communicate the activities they carry out in favor of their communities, Anel Sánchez Cortés, from the communication area of the Guadalupe Musalem Fund, illustrated the importance of the use of photography, video, other applications, and social networks (for example, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, etc.), teaching the scholarship recipients some of the basic elements. At the end of the session, the young women made a poster in Canva, applying what they had learned to make their work faster and visibly more attractive.

Marisol from Valles Centrales, expressed: “I really liked learning to use the Canva tool because it can be useful for my schoolwork and for my community work.”

15

Newsletter April 2022 Collaborative work.

Sonia Bautista León, a graduate of the Guadalupe Musalem Fund, recalled her time in the program and by means of enjoyable activities, transmitted the value of teamwork and collaboration. The students identified the leadership skills that each one has, as well as the values and aptitudes necessary to carry out an activity in an orderly and efficient manner. “I learned to think about how I want my future to be, how to get there and how hard I have to work. I also learned that among all women we can support each other and that I will never be alone,” said Karina.

16

Newsletter April 2022 Community work

The “Community Work” workshop was led by Evi Rosalva Hernández, head of the Education and Academic Monitoring Area. After the days of coexistence and teamwork and feeling more united, the fellows worked on communication and collaboration. They created a “Circle of Power”, to speak freely about “righteous rage”, fear and courage and identifying how these sensations can drive them in their struggle to reduce or eradicate violence and violations of women’s rights, which have increased in the country. “I got new ideas that I can implement in my community work activities: excercises, subjects, and how to speak naturally in front of an audience”: Betzabé, from the Sierra Norte.

17

Newsletter April 2022 Women in science.

With admiration, the young women listened attentively to the life story of Tania Martínez, a woman who, like them, is from Oaxaca, and, as an Irrigation Engineer, a Master’s in Biosystems Engineering from the University of Arizona, and PhD in Social Sciences from Wagenigen University, is making great contributions to the world of science. She told them about her love for science and motivated them to fight to achieve their goals. She also spoke about the difficulties she had to face but how that did not stop her from fulfilling her professional goals. She shared with the young women her pride in being from an indigenous community despite the discrimination she had to face. Carolina, a scholarship recipient from Valles Centrales, stated: “I learned a lot positive things that contribute to my personal and academic life. In all the activities I learned new things, but the one that had the greatest impact is realizing that we are very fortunate to receive these trainings which provide opportunities for us to think differently, thanks to the information we recieive. I also learned a lot about friendship and empathy.”

18

Newsletter April 2022 Narrating my story.

On Friday the 22nd, to wrap up the workshops and other educational excercises, the fellows were led by the psychologist Judith Avendaño Gómez in creating a “Tree of Life”, a narrative therapy technique. The family therapy specialist encouraged them to reflect on their ability to weave alliances, and to be aware of the possibility of creating a network with their collegues, and the fact that, although each one has her own story, they can share experiences and knowledge. “Sincerely, I learned so many things that it is difficult to describe them. But something that I have realized is that women, despite our differences, can form networks, and if we need something we can consult and support each other,” said Luz María from the Mixteca region of Oaxaca.

19

Newsletter April 2022 CAMPO A.C., shares good practices with fellows.

The days spent at the CAMPO facilities was a pleasant experience not only because it is the space in which the workshops were were carried out after a long time of working online, but also because the workers of this center were very welcoming and supportive. Lirio Matías Garcías, Natalia Torres Pérez and César Morales Rodríguez, gave the workshops “Treatment of organic waste through vermicomposting”, “Biointensive organic gardens” and “Ecological construction based on rammed earth”. The scholarship recipients learned that there are various ways of producing food and constructing ecologically, with caring for health and the environment as a priority. “I really liked these subjects because I am interested in learning about all the processes for planting and producing food, especially identifying the types of fertilizers that each plant requires,” said Luz Divina, from the Sierra Sur.

The objective of this talk is for the mentors to learn through simple methods to become aware of their moods and use their breath in achieving changes in their well being in a short time. As an introduction the activity, the specialist mentioned that while breathing consciously one can experience anguish, anxiety, fear, insecurity, stress, etc. During the session the mentors learned techniques that they put into practice and that they will share with their charges. Among the benefits of this breathing technique are: greater concentration, calming the mind, and balancing the functions of the hemispheres of the brain, etc.

Newsletter Testimony April 2022 Betzabé

High school grantee.

My name is Betzabé, proudly originally from the Sierra Norte de Oaxaca, Mexico. I am about to finish high school. I feel happy and proud tohave achieved everything I have set out to do and I know that I can improve even more. I feel very lucky to be a fellow of the Guadalupe Musalem Fund. I remember that when I submitted my application, I was not sure I would be a beneficiary. But when the call came and they told me that I had been selected, it was a moment of joy. I am very grateful for all the support and training that the FGM provides us, thanks to generous people who trust in the education of us women. At the beginning of the pandemic, it was very difficult to adapt to the virtual modality, mainly because in my community there is no internet access. It was very complicated to connect to my classes. Then with the scholarship provided by the Guadalupe Musalem Fund, I was able to install the internet and I could access my virtual classes. The FGM supported me mainly with the training that we received virtually. We were learning how to use different digital platforms to do work, to enter classes, and everything that had to do with school. In 2022, after two years of working remotely through digital platforms, the FGM organized a week of face-to-face training. It was really special because I met again with my fellow interns.

Newsletter Testimonio April 2022 One of the benefits of being an intern is that we have the support of a tutor. She has been like a second mother. I trust to tell her all my concerns, mainly school issues. But when I feel bad about a situation and need to talk about it with someone, she is always there to talk to me.She is already part of my family. My plans for the future are to take my entrance exam, pass it, and study Civil Engineering because I like it a lot. I chose this career because my father is a bricklayer. When I was little, I saw him make the plans and sometimes accompanied him. I paid attention to the work he did and when I got to know about careers, I realized that I could study a career that has to do with the field of masonry. I would be proud to study this career because I would be breaking a stereotype that is very marked in society and I would be following the example my father gave me but with more knowledge and preparation - breaking stereotypes and doing what I like. I want to thank all the people who donate, for their willingness to support this wonderful project. Thanks to you, many intelligent Oaxacan girls who want to study have the opportunity to continue with their dreams and fulfill them. There are no longer any limitations to achieving what we want. “In this life, everything is possible and we must always take advantage of all the opportunities that come our way. Everything that they teach us must always be taken advantage of and put into practice”
