Arbor | A synonym of axle (barrel arbor). A toothed wheel is fixed to the arbor, which is usually cylindrical, and both revolve.

Balance | A circular, moving part which oscillates on its rotational axis. It is coupled to the balance-spring which gives it the to-and-fro motion through which it divides time into strictly equal parts. Each to-and-fro movement ("tick-tock") is called an oscillation, and each oscillation comprises two vibrations. Comprising a circular mass (rim) held by spokes it is, combined with the balance spring, the regulating organ of the watch.

Balance-spring | A very fine spring and the "heart" of a mechanical watch. Its ends are affixed to the balance and the balance-cock. Its elasticity allows the balance to make regular oscillations. Its length, and the balance's moment of inertia, determine the duration of each oscillation. Its length can be altered to regulate the watch.

Barrel | A cylindrical box (the barrel) and toothed disc (wheel), protected by a cover. The barrel, which contains the mainspring, turns freely on its arbor. The mainspring is hooked to the barrel at its outer extremity and to the arbor at its inner extremity.

The barrel wheel meshes with the first pinion of the geartrain. As it slowly rotates, its arc varies from one-ninth to one-sixth of a revolution per hour. A hanging barrel (also known as a standing barrel or floating barrel) is one whose arbor is supported at the upper end only, being attached to the barrel bridge with no support from the lower plate. A plain barrel, used in fusee watches, has no teeth. Catgut, then a chain, is coiled round the plain barrel, connecting it to the fusee.

Complication | Any function other than the indication of hours, minutes and seconds, regardless of whether the mechanism is hand-wound or self-winding, mechanical or electronic, and of movement height. The tourbillon and the self-winding system are considered to be complications even though they do not fall within the generic definition.

Far from being a passing fad, complications were instrumental in the rediscovery of the watchmaker's art in the 1980s and have continued to play an important role in the development of the traditional wristwatch. Complications fall into two categories according to whether they are or are not related to timekeeping.

Crown | The winding crown is a knurled or fluted button of various shapes, held between the thumb and forefinger and used to wind the watch. Some crowns incorporate a mobile pushbutton for operating a chronograph mechanism or to release the cover of a hunter case.

The first example of a crown for winding and setting the time appeared on a watch made by John Arnold in 1820. The system was perfected by Breguet for miniature watches circa 1832, and was patented in 1838 by Louis Audemars in Le Brassus. In 1844, Adrien Philippe invented and patented his sliding pinion mechanism which would replace all other systems.

In 1847, Charles-Antoine LeCoultre invented his keyless winding system with its rocking bar and side pushbutton to set the time.

Ebauche | An unfinished movement sold as such. Until circa 1850, an ébauche comprised only the plate, bridges, fusee and barrel. It was known as a blanc and was finished at the établissage.

The modern ébauche is a watch movement, with or without jewels but always without its regulating organ, mainspring, dial and hands. It is also known as a blanc roulant.

Escapement | A mechanism that is fitted between the gears and the regulating organ. Its function is to suspend the gears' motion at regular intervals and to supply energy to the balance.

The main types of watch escapement are: – recoil escapements (verge or crown wheel) – dead-beat escapements (cylinder, virgule, double virgule) – detached escapements (lever, detent)

Mainspring | The source of mechanical energy in a watch. A strip of tempered blued steel or a special steel alloy, coiled inside the barrel.

Mouvement | Ensemble assemblé des organes et mécanismes principaux qui composent la montre sous son habillement, soit : le mécanisme de remontage et de mise à l'heure, le ressort moteur, le rouage, l'échappement et l'organe régulateur ou organe réglant (balancier-spiral).

Movement | The duly-assembled organs and mechanisms of a watch, meaning the winding and hand-setting mechanism, the mainspring, the gears, the escapement and the regulating organ (balance and spring).

Pignon | En horlogerie organe denté qui compte généralement de 6 à 14 dents appelées ailes. Les différentes parties d'un pignon sont : les ailes, l'assiette sur laquelle est rivée la roue, le tigeron et les pivots.

"Anatomically speaking", the movement comprises the ébauche, the regulating parts and other components (springs, jewels, pivots, pinions, screws, shockabsorbers, etc.).

Pivot | Extrêmité d'un axe qui tourne dans une partie fixe (coussinet) qui lui sert de support.

Pinion | A watch part, generally with 6 to 14 leaves (teeth). The different parts of the pinion are the leaves, the seat to which the wheel is riveted, the shank and the pivots.

Pont | Plaque de forme particulière fixée à la platine sur laquelle tourne l’un ou plusieurs des pivots des mobiles du mouvement. Les deux extrémités du pont sont rattachées à la platine par des vis. Généralement le pont est dénommé d’après sa fonction : le pont de barillet, pont de rouage, pont d'échappement, etc.

Pivot | A part that runs in a fixed support (bearing).

Tourbillon | A system devised and patented by Abraham-Louis Breguet in 1801 to compensate for errors of rate caused by the Earth's gravitational force in upright positions. The escapement is mounted in a revolving cage with the regulating organ (balance) at the centre.

The escape-wheel pinion turns about the fixed fourth wheel. The cage generally revolves once a minute and, in doing so, compensates for errors of rate caused by the vertical position in which pocket watches spend most of their time.

This delicate and complex structure is one of watchmaking's most ingenious mechanisms. A simplified and more robust alternative is the karussel where the cage is driven not by the fourth wheel but by the third wheel. A tourbillon can contain a lever or a detent escapement.

Wind | The action of tightening the mainspring coiled inside the barrel by means of the winding crown (in a hand-wound watch) or the rotor (in a self-winding watch).

Ressort | Source d'énergie mécanique de la montre, constituée par un ruban d'acier trempé et bleui, ou d'acier de composition spéciale, enroulé à l'intérieur du barillet.

Rouage | Ensemble des pignons et des roues dont le mouvement de l'un entraîne celui de tous les autres. Il existe différents rouages ou trains de rouages : rouage multiplicatif, démultiplicatif, de remontoir, de minuterie...

Spiral | Ressort très fin considéré comme l'âme de la montre mécanique. Il est fixé par ses extrémités au balancier et au coq. Grâce à son élasticité, le spiral permet au balancier d'osciller de façon régulière. Sa longueur détermine, avec le moment d'inertie du balancier, la durée de l'oscillation. Un dispositif permet de modifier sa longueur et ainsi d'ajuster le réglage.

Tourbillon | Dispositif imaginé et breveté par Abraham-Louis Breguet en 1801 pour compenser les écarts de marche dûs à la gravité terrestre dans les positions verticales. Il comprend une cage mobile qui porte tous les organes de l'échappement et, en son centre, l'organe régulateur.

Le pignon de la roue d'échappement tourne autour de la roue des secondes qui est fixe. La cage fait généralement un tour/minute, et compense en tournant les écarts de marche dans la position verticale, position habituelle de la montre de poche.

Ce mécanisme délicat et complexe compte parmi les combinaisons mécaniques les plus ingénieuses de l'horlogerie. Pour simplifier ce mécanisme et le rendre plus robuste, on a construit des montres dites à carrousel dans lesquelles le dispositif tournant est commandé, non pas depuis la roue des secondes, mais depuis la roue moyenne. Il existe des tourbillons à échappement à ancre ou à détente.
