Canadian billionaire Calvin Ayre has become a transformative figure in Antigua, directing significant philanthropic efforts and launching ambitious development projects that have reshaped the island and enriched the lives of its residents
Now known as the Special Economic Envoy for the Government of Antigua and Barbuda, a dynamic entrepreneur and one of Canada?s most successful businessmen, Ayre has channelled his wealth into meaningful contributions that strengthen communities and leave a lasting legacy.
Among his most recent initiatives is the development of Nikki Beach Resort Antigua, a luxury destination that Ayre is building in partnership with businesswoman Lucia Penrod (Nikki Beach Hospitality Group).
This new venture not only elevates Antigua?s tourism industry but also reflects Ayre?s commitment to sustainability and his deep connection to the Antiguan people.
?I love Antigua ? the people here have been very good to me over the twenty years I?ve called this place home, and I have never taken their welcome for granted,?Ayre shared. ?Through a combination of a few good ideas, a lot of hard work, and seizing opportunities when they present themselves, I?ve been able to build several successful businesses. I hope that when people look back on my time here, they?ll see that I was able to use my success to make a positive difference in the lives of the Antiguan people.?
Calvin Ayre?s philanthropy is as remarkable as his business success. Through the Calvin Ayre Foundation, he has funded a range of initiatives in health, education, and environmental conservation, always prioritizing projects with sustainable impact.
?I set up a charitable foundation that operates in different countries to provide support where it is most needed and will have the most impact,?he explained ?One of the Foundation?s main planks is focused on education, empowering people to achieve their individual goals, hopes, and dreams.?
In Antigua, Ayre?s contributions have been particularly impactful in the health sector, where he has provided essential equipment, infrastructure improvements, and training programs to enhance healthcare services. When COVID-19 struck, his foundation swiftly responded, supplying Antigua?s hospitals with PPE and testing kits, which were essential in helping the island manage the pandemic.
Ayre?s philanthropic reach extends to emergency response His foundation?s disaster relief efforts have been invaluable for communities affected by hurricanes and storms, and Ayre?s commitment to healthcare has even led him to create a dedicated helicopter service that provides timely medical care for local patients.
?Our CalvinAir helicopter service has helped a number of local patients receive timely medical care,?Ayre said. ?It can be difficult sometimes to gauge the impact of one?s actions, but the Foundation?s work is something I?m very proud of ?
Ayre?s journey from tech entrepreneur to billionaire philanthropist started in Vancouver, BC, where he founded his first successful business in the city?s early tech scene
?From the start, I?ve always been my own boss,?he explained. ?This has allowed me to do things my own way and to respond quickly when opportunities arose. My first real business success in Vancouver was an empty office space that I was able to hook up to the city?s only high-speed internet connection at the time. This attracted a bunch of tech start- up companies and basically became Vancouver?s first tech incubator ?This experience led him to create Bodog, an online gaming company that propelled him to international fame and earned him a spot on the cover of Forbes?Billionaires issue in 2006.
Ayre?s forward-looking nature continued with his early interest in blockchain technology ?I first became aware of Bitcoin around 2010 and was immediately fascinated by the possibilities of the blockchain infrastructure underpinning it,? he shared. While Ayre acknowledges that the initial excitement around cryptocurrency has waned, he is optimistic about the enduring value of blockchain. ?The technology itself got pushed to the side among all the ?get rich quick?hype. But the technology hasn? t gone anywhere and will still be there when all the hype fades? as it inevitably does? offering a strong and secure platform on which tech entrepreneurs can build revolutionary applications.?
Ayre?s most ambitious project to date is the development of the Nikki Beach Resort Antigua, a luxury haven set on the pristine white sands of Jolly Harbour on Antigua?s breathtaking coastline In collaboration with Lucia Penrod and the internationally renowned Nikki Beach brand, Ayre aims to create a high-end resort that seamlessly integrates 5- star sophistication with the island?s natural beauty. Slated for completion in 2028, this transformative development will feature luxury accommodations, gourmet dining, curated entertainment, and world-class amenities, including a private beachfront. Designed by the acclaimed architectural firm HKS, the resort is expected to boost Antigua?s tourism, create jobs, and showcase sustainable practices, positioning it as one of the Caribbean?s most exclusive destinations
Nikki Beach Resort Antigua reflects Ayre?s dual dedication to luxury and community support. By prioritizing local hiring and training programs, Ayre and Penrod aim to build a resort that directly benefits the people of Antigua.
?I?ve always said that people who enjoy this kind of success have an obligation to give a little something back to others who, through no fault of their own, might not have been as fortunate,?Ayre remarked. ?Through projects like Nikki Beach, we?re creating opportunities that support local businesses, provide sustainable employment, and contribute to the broader economy?
DISCLAIM ER: Renders are not intended to be an actual depiction of the resort elements or its surroundings and are for illustration purposes only Copying, disseminating and any other use of these materials is not permitted without the written permission of The Ayre Group or its agents.
Ayre?s philanthropy also extends to environmental conservation. Through the Calvin Ayre Foundation, he has championed projects that protect Antigua?s natural beauty and biodiversity. His commitment to sustainability is evident in his tourism developments, where he emphasizes eco-friendly practices that preserve the island?s unique environment for future generations
?I hope that when people look back on my time here, they?ll see that I was able to use my success to make a positive difference in the lives of the Antiguan people,?Ayre said His contributions have not only improved immediate infrastructure and services but have also created a foundation for long-term community growth.
While Ayre?s work in Antigua showcases his community-centred vision, he remains equally passionate about blockchain?s transformative potential. A longtime advocate for the BSV Blockchain, Ayre sees it as the next evolution of digital infrastructure.
?My mission is to amplify this positive message, to inform the world of the transformative opportunities that an unboundedly scalable public proof-of-work network like the BSV Blockchain has to offer,?Ayre said. ?It?s too late for me to be an astronaut, but there?s no age limit on being a digital pioneer. "
"So, let?s embrace this technology, point it at the horizon, and see if we can? t build a better future.?
Ayre?s enthusiasm for blockchain aligns with his broader vision of using technology to empower communities Through the development of M etanet, he is creating a better, more inclusive, and dynamic internet? one where webpages, services, and all online data can be accessed and monetized in a direct-to-consumer model. His work with blockchain, combined with his philanthropy and visionary projects like Nikki Beach Resort, make him a multifaceted force for positive change in Antigua and beyond
Through his philanthropy, environmental advocacy, and visionary investments, Calvin Ayre has become a beloved figure in Antigua, leaving an impact that extends far beyond economic contributions. His approach to responsible development and deep commitment to community upliftment have earned him admiration from the Antiguan government and local organizations alike
As he continues his journey, Ayre?s work exemplifies how success in business can translate into positive change for communities His legacy in Antigua reflects not only his dedication to the people who have welcomed him but also his hope to inspire others to use their success for good.

When Jack Wu decided it was time to propose to his beloved Ashley Su, he wanted to make sure it was a moment she would remember forever.
In the luxurious Lieutenant Governor' s Suite of the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver, surrounded by 100 roses, Jack asked Ashley to be his forever.
That intimate proposal marked the beginning of a wedding journey that would weave together cherished family traditions, high fashion, and memories spanning continents.
The couple's Chinese signing ceremony was held at the historic Vancouver Club, where just nine close family members and friends gathered to celebrate their union. Ashley and Jack had chosen to have this ceremony in Vancouver, not only to honour their roots but also because Ashley's father was unable to travel to France. This gave the signing ceremony a deep, personal meaning. Before the ceremony, Ashley shared a quiet first look with her father? an emotional moment that she would carry with her into the ceremony and beyond.
For the floral design, Ashley gave the full creative design direction to her planner, designer Liting Chan of Paradise Events Inc. Tapping into her years of experience, Liting drew inspiration from the iconic blue delphinium arrangements seen in Dior' s runway shows Hundreds of these delicate blue blooms, specially imported from Holland, adorned the ceremony space, adding an ethereal touch and honouring her love of fashion. The simplicity and elegance of the single flower type underscored the ceremony's intimacy, allowing the focus to rest entirely on the love between Ashley and Jack. The blue delphinium contrasted Ashley's red custom gown creating an unconventional wedding look with a high fashion touch of luxury
Jack looked dapper in a tuxedo from Atelier Amaro, paired with elegant Carmina footwear, exuding classic sophistication Ashley dazzled in a custom Ines Di Santo gown paired with Christian Louboutin heels, combining traditional beauty with modern elegance.
Later, she slipped into a stunning white M artina Liana dress, styled with Freya Rose heels, embodying grace and refinement.
The fathers of both the bride and groom shared touching speeches at the signing ceremony, adding warmth and tradition to the event. Their words celebrated the love Ashley and Jack had cultivated and underscored the support and blessings that would accompany them as they moved forward together.
One week after the signing ceremony, the couple celebrated their union in grand fashion at a breathtaking château in the French countryside.
With only 28 close family members and friends in attendance, the wedding was an intimate yet splendid affair, blending the warmth of a family gathering with the romance of a fairy tale.
Set against the backdrop of lush vineyards and timeless architecture, Ashley and Jack's France wedding was a beautiful homage to their shared love story. Each detail of the ceremony and reception was thoughtfully curated to reflect their unique style and the deep connection they shared.
For Ashley and Jack, the wedding journey was a perfect blend of family, tradition, and timeless beauty ? creating cherished memories that will last a lifetime

In Gene Kelly: A Life in M usic performance with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, Patricia Ward Kelly offers an engaging and immersive experience for the audience. The show goes beyond a traditional concert with video clips Throughout the performance, Kelly provides insights, sharing her personal memories and in-depth knowledge of Gene Kelly?s life and work, enriching the audience?s understanding of each piece and enhancing their appreciation of the clips? some of which may be familiar but are brought to life in new and meaningful ways.
Reflecting on the evolution of her one-woman show, Patricia explains how the 2012 Academy of M otion Pictures retrospective, which honoured Gene Kelly, led to a deeper exploration of the role music played in his career "After the 2012 Academy show, I began touring my one-woman show, and I noticed that audiences would leave saying, 'I loved Gene before, but I love him even more now.' They started to understand the many dimensions of him," she shares.
Patricia notes that, while Gene is often remembered for his dance, she associates him with music because that was the way he communicated with her during their years of recording. He would frequently use song lyrics to express his most intimate thoughts, memories, and emotions. She emphasizes how deeply Gene respected the musicians, arrangers, and composers with whom he worked, often engaging directly with them during the recording process. "I once asked him, 'What comes first, the music or the dance?' and he replied, 'Usually, with me, it?s the dance that comes first, and then I connect it to the music.'"
The Gene Kelly: A Life in Music show grew out of that retrospective and became a way to honour Kelly's legacy further Patricia reached out to the Academy, knowing they often held tributes to legendary figures and offered to participate.
"I knew the Academy often held tributes to legends, so I reached out to them. Typically, they would gather people who had worked with figures like Jimmy Stewart, for example. However, Gene found that many of those who had worked with him did not share the same recollections or details," she explains. Patricia took it upon herself to ensure that Gene's story was accurately preserved, acting in a way like a journalist, using production records to verify what he had shared with her.
She adds, "Gene was highly 'on target' because, as a director, choreographer, and star, he had to oversee the schedule, budget, and every detail far more than other performers, who were often involved in a film for less time."
When asked about the challenge of adapting Gene Kelly?s iconic films for a live orchestra, Patricia acknowledges the technical difficulties of separating the soundtracks.
"In those days, separate tracks were rare, which makes creating these shows challenging," she says. She worked closely with Chris Drozdowski, a skilled extraction specialist, who spent hours isolating the music for the live orchestra performance. Thanks to new technology, Drozdowski is now revisiting and refining the tracks, ensuring that Gene?s famous tap dance sounds are clearer than ever before. Patricia is excited about this new version, calling it "the cleanest version we have ever achieved," and is eager for audiences to experience the music in its most refined form
Reflecting on Gene Kelly?s lasting influence on dancers, Patricia feels strongly that his impact would still be felt today. "I believe there is a strong desire for more musicals People love them and long for them," she says. "However, large studio conglomerates often opt for the easier route, adapting Broadway shows into films or vice versa. It takes bold investment in original works, like La La Land, which Lionsgate supported, to create new opportunities. That kind of environment is what allows artists like Gene Kelly to thrive."
The performance of Gene Kelly: A Life in Music is designed to be much more than just a typical film screening with live music
"The show features wonderful surprises, including rare recordings and previously unseen material from his vaults," Patricia shares "I aim to showcase a variety of his work, so the audience will hear him speak, watch him dance, and experience his versatility in numerous styles? from classical ballet to Spanish dance, jazz, and acrobatics. You will witness a true blend of talent, not confined to any one style."
She believes the show will offer a deeply personal experience that will resonate with audiences, evoking laughter and tears.
"This show is engaging, personal, and deeply moving Audiences will laugh, cry, and interact with the screen, creating a unique experience," she says. "It is not simply watching a movie; it is an immersive event "
The theatre setting itself plays an important role, as it fosters a shared experience among the audience members.
Patricia recalls an especially touching moment from a performance in Seattle, where a 100- year- old woman and a five- year- old girl sat next to each other, and the older woman delighted in watching the child?s reactions. "The audience?s experience becomes a part of the show itself."
Gene Kelly: A Life in Music promises to be a celebration of one of cinema?s most beloved figures, offering both long-time fans and new audiences a fresh perspective on Kelly?s artistry, his relationship with music, and his lasting legacy.

The North Arm Farm Autumn Squash Tasting followed a celebration of fall flavours with Modena balsamic, crisp green apple, spiced pepitas, and fragrant shiso, each ingredient adding its unique touch to the medley. The Hen of the Woods M ushrooms course arrived next, a rustic blend of farro and roasted root vegetables complemented by a velvety miso almond emulsion and bright purple kale? a perfect marriage of earthiness and warmth.
Pastry Chef Daria Andriienko presented a luscious Dark Chocolate Crémeux, paired with a tart raspberry coulis and refreshing raspberry sorbet to finish. This exquisite dessert provided a final burst of flavour, leaving a lasting impression of elegance and indulgence

LLori Goldberg, born in Canada and currently residing in Vancouver, is a distinguished contemporary artist whose oeuvre elegantly merges the figurative with the abstract through a distinctly feminine lens. Her artistic vision delves into themes encompassing traditional West Coast landscape painting, urban scenery, and the reimagining of nature itself, resulting in a perspective that is both innovative and evocative.
Goldberg's paintings serve as a dynamic platform for the reconfiguration of natural landscapes juxtaposed with the disordered realities of contemporary urban environments. Through her masterful use of colour and brushwork, she captures a spectrum that oscillates between the solid, the fluid, and the transitional states that exist in between
An accomplished academic, Goldberg possesses art degrees from the Langara College of Fine Arts and the Ontario College of Art and Design. She imparts her expertise as a painting instructor at Emily Carr University of Art and Design.
Her works have been recognized and incorporated into esteemed collections, including the Canada Art Bank and various contemporary art galleries, further solidifying her stature in the contemporary art landscape.
"Since the 1980s, I have been exploring the intricate relationship between material objects and the natural world through my painting. My artistic approach involves a nuanced integration of urban-derived imagery, drawn from the disarray of garbage-laden streets, seamlessly interwoven with traditional landscape techniques. Central to my practice is the concept of reclamation and recycling, where tactile objects and painted images narrate the lifecycle of plastic products, underscoring their critical impact on the environment.
While painting remains my primary medium, I continuously explore diverse materials and techniques to capture the essence of each location. From transferring digitized photos onto canvas and creating stop-motion animations to constructing site-specific installations, my works offer an alternative visual approach to understanding consumption, waste, and our treatment of the Earth and humanity. By juxtaposing the detritus of daily consumption with the vibrant life force of nature, I view my paintings as a site that calls for reflection on our lost connection to the environment and the need to reshape our post-consumerist lifestyle."
