CUSTOMER PROFILE
Hold 'Em Fence Good fences make a good business. Good relationships make it even better.
If you want to talk to Yachal Benedick, you need to get up early or stay up late because he’s always on the move. Yachal (pronounced yaw-chal’) is Hebrew meaning to wait, hope or linger in expectation. None of these definitions fit. Quite simply, Yachal Benedick has been running nonstop since 1999 with a seat-of-the-pants sensibility — keeping promises coupled with a fundamental belief in the value of loyalty and relationships.

One thing leads to another. Benedick grew up a home-schooled, farm boy near Fostoria, Kansas. A local rancher asked if he’d be interested in stringing some barbed wire. What Benedick knew and loved was farming not fencing. While not especially interesting to him, the $10 per hour was. Fourteen years after that first job, Benedick
and his company have built fences in nearly every state west of the Mississippi including many miles of fencing in the public sector, work that started with a job for the University of Nebraska. Eventually Hold ‘Em Fence became a government contractor which led to a series of high profile projects for the National Forest Service and U.S. Wildlife and Parks, including big game containment in Colorado’s Estes Park in 2008. “My path to success has been pretty straight forward; I built the business by keeping promises to my customers. Customers remember that, come back time-and-again because they trust us and refer us to others,” Benedick explained. Benedick has quit doing government work. “Today, the business is a near 50/50 split between stringin’ fence and building pens for feeders and dairies. The pen and livestock working facilities are interesting…all the gates controlling the flow of livestock make it challenging.” To support his operation, Benedick’s current Cat® machine population includes two - 299DXPs, 289C2 and 262C2 skid steer loaders along with a 307C mini excavator. Benedick carries extended warranties on several of the machines. Specific to the fence building business, Hold ‘Em runs three A-26B auger drives, two Virnig Rotary Brushcutters and two 185CFM Sullair air compressors. You’ll also find Cat® engines under the hood of Hold ‘Em’s haul trucks.

Relationships matter. “We wouldn’t be where we are today without valuable, solid relationships,” Benedick said. This includes a trusted relationship with his business associate, Stephen Mueting. “Stephen is the most trustworthy person I’ve met. Without his dedication and ingenuity, we wouldn’t have amounted to much.” “My relationship with Foley is another critical success factor in our business,” Benedick continued. “It starts with Joe Wilken (Foley Compact Construction sales rep). Joe is honest and incredibly knowledgeable. He understands the machines and attachments but more importantly, understands how that machine, attachment or service helps me to be more efficient and profitable. He understands my business.” “No other dealer does parts and service

like Foley. No one has the ability to put parts so close to my job site like Foley can through their network of parts drop boxes,” Benedick said. “And field service and consultation is just a phone call away. I can call John Debusk (Manhattan shop manager) at 8:00 in the evening and he’ll say ‘What can we do for you?’” “In the end, you can be good at math or mechanics and/or medicine but you accomplish nothing without good relationships with people you trust. My relationships with my employees, my customers and Foley have helped me grow my business to where it is today.”
