Welcome Back Wirral! Hi Wirral, Brrrr! The cold nights are here and Christmas is on it’s way! Now is the time to reflect on the year gone by and plan the year ahead - 2013 here we come! 2012 has been a testing year with so many negatives to think about. We have all been caught in a biting recession, watched price hikes on petrol, weathered the continuing housing slump and shuddered at ongoing global conflicts. Small Wirral businesses have struggled through an exceptionally hard year and continue to need your support. But it hasn’t been all doom and gloom! Great Britain hosted what has been called the greatest Olympics in modern times, we loved the Diamond Jubilee and Andy Murray won at Wimbledon to name just a few fabulous events! With 85 members of staff and a fleet of over 30 vans, we service the whole of Wirral. Originally, we concentrated on the commercial market but decided to spread into the domestic market in 2011 and so we set up Prolinemec Renewables showroom in West Kirby. In the beginning we gained much of our work through word of mouth but felt we could handle more and wanted to find an avenue to do this. We were looking for a quality publication to match the standard of our work and wanted more than the local paper. Wirral Focus has given us this. We love the idea that it is a high quality A5 magazine delivered directly to peoples’ homes every 6 weeks. The results are superb and we have gained several high profile jobs from the advertising. Post cycling he went on to establish a name in journalism writing for various publications, including Diver magazine (his latest passion) and Pro Cycling, worked as a commentator for ITV and the BBC covering major cycling events, sat on the National Cycling Strategy Board as well as co-founding Boardman Bikes, the most respected and fastest growing British Bike Brand in decades. Although bikes and cycling still plays a large part in Chris's life, his other pursuits include writing, running, archery and cave diving.

He is married with six children and still lives in Hoylake, Wirral. He first became known to the public when he took Britain's opening Gold medal at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics riding his infamous Lotus bike. This was also Britain's first cycling Gold medal in 72 years. The iconic image of the Lotus machine and pointy helmet linked Chris forever with cutting edge technology, something he later went on to reinforce by leading the R&D team for GB Cycling in the run up to Beijing, where they became the most successful British sporting team of all time. Between Barcelona and Beijing, Chris won three stages of the Tour de France, set numerous world records (several of which still stand) and became arguably Britain's most successful cyclist to date.

Debbie and Alan from Wire take time out to explain to Focus about their life changing charity and how spreading the word is more important than ever. Wire is a fabulous concept.Tell us a little about how you started out. Debbie: I have known Alan for a long time, twenty years in fact.We worked together restoring old furniture. Both of us have a strong social conscience and always talked about the lack of help for people struggling to furnish their homes in Wirral.The conversation came up too many times to ignore so we decided to put our thoughts into action.That was ten years ago and we have never looked back!
Who benefits from your charity? Alan: We have a huge range of customers. From people who have lost their jobs or have low incomes to single families, people with physical or mental disabilities or those who have been re-homed due to fire or flood.We work very closely with Social Services and Wirral Housing Associations to ensure that we reach everybody in need.
Tell us about some local success stories. Debbie: We are proud to say that their are so many.We have helped a family refurnish their home after losing everything in a house fire.We also help to furnish re-located victims of domestic abuse. Every individual scenario is so important and our doors are open to everyone.
People will often think that they are hoarding junk and won’t even consider giving to Wire. How can you change their minds?! Alan: What may be of no use to one person could be life changing for another. So, all we ask is if anybody has any complete furniture that they no longer require, please give us a call. Please also bear in mind, that we have very little facilities here for fixing items so all we ask is that donations must be in usable condition.
How can people help and get involved? Debbie: We are extremely lucky to have a fantastic group of volunteers at hand so we have plenty of help here at Wire.The Wirral Community can still be of great help though by donating to the charity - everything donated will be put to good use.
How has Wirral Focus helped to spread the word for Wire? Alan: Wirral Focus has been a great find for us.The phones don’t stop ringing after the magazine has been delivered so we always know when the magazine has gone out! Wire have featured in the magazine nine times now and don’t advertise anywhere else.We intend to continue due to the huge exposure and great results that Wire have received.

How long has Exterior Property Valeting been operating? Elliott. We have been trading as a partnership for 18 months. We’ve known each other for many years and have great respect for each others professional skills. Because of this we decided to form our partnership. We wanted to create a one stop solution for all external property requirements from domestic to industrial and that is what we have achieved. Congratulations! We hear you have acquired a loan from MSIF (Merseyside Special Investment Fund). What criteria did you have to meet to apply for this? Ian: From a cold start with Mitie, we rose to being their No 1 contractor in the region within 18 months. Basically, we worked our socks off and it paid off for us. MSIF recognised this and could see the potential in the company and us as a team. As with any successful business, it is all down to hard work, reliability and trust. We see you both have very different skills. Tell us more about them and how they compliment each other. Elliott: You're right! That was part of the reason for us getting together. I have 15 years experience in restoration and renovation of all stone work including listed buildings both locally and nationally. I have many testimonials available. Ian has 20 years experience in external property cleaning, transforming houses and commercial buildings back to their original look. Winter is coming! What services do you offer home owners to protect their property in the chill? Ian: We offer a comprehensive range of services for winter. Many people don’t understand the importance of preparing for the winter snap but the weather can really take it’s toll on people’s largest asset - their homes! Our services include rock salting, plumbing, gutters, cleaning, renovating driveways, pest control and most importantly a 24/7 emergency call out service. It’s great to see you in our magazine again. What has brought you back again? Elliott: The Focus team introduced us to Invest Wirral who then helped us with the application for MSIF. It’s good to have close links with other companies and good to know we have strong local business links.
