Local Heroes ...... .... Paul O’Grady Paul James Michael O'Grady MBE was born on 14 June 1955. His many talents include comedian, television presenter, actor, writer and radio DJ. After becoming famous for his drag queen comedic alter ego, Lily Savage, he subsequently became well known for presenting the daytime chat television series, The Paul O'Grady Show.

Collecting his MBE in 2008

Moving on from his drag act, TV work included Eyes Down (2003–2004), travel documentaries, The Paul O'Grady Show In 2004 for ITV, followed by the The New Paul O'Grady Show in 2006 on Channel 4. He then presented the chat show Paul O'Grady Live (2010–2011) before stopping to focus on other projects, including Radio Two’s, Paul O'Grady on the Wireless, a BBC documentary series Paul O'Grady's Working Britain and two ITV programmes, award - winning documentary series For the Love of Dogs (2012–) and The British Animal Honours (2013–).

Appointed MBE in the 2008 Birthday Honours list for services to entertainment, O’Grady received an Honorary Doctor of Arts from De Montfort University, Leicester in 2010, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to television, radio and the stage. O'Grady has authored a three-volume autobiography. The first volume, ‘At My Mother's Knee ... And Other Low Joints’, (2008), the second volume, ‘The Devil Rides Out’ and the third volume, Still Standing: The Savage Years (2012). Childhood Paul O'Grady's father, Patrick "Paddy" Grady (His name was changed from Grady to O'Grady in a paperwork mistake when he joined the Royal Air Force - died 1973) married Mary Savage (1916–1988), and brought up their three children (older siblings Brendan and Sheila) in the Catholic faith in Wirral. Paul was their third child, born at 7:30 am at St. Catherine's Hospital, Tranmere. O'Grady spent his early life at the family's rented home in Tranmere, Birkenhead.

Drag Queen Lily Savage Brendan Frank Murphy (1956 – 2005), who was HIV+ and died of brain cancer in London, five days before O'Grady's 50th birthday. O'Grady became a grandfather in 2006, when daughter Sharyn gave birth to a son, Abel. O'Grady is publicly known for having had many high profile and celebrity friends, including the late politician Mo Mowlam and singer Cilla Black.

O’Grady attended St. Joseph's Catholic Primary School, followed by the Blessed Edmund Campion R.C. Secondary Modern and the Corpus Christi High School. After a brief time in the cub scouts, he became an altar boy at a local Catholic church but he was dismissed after laughing during a funeral service. O’Grady then joined the Marine cadets, which he thoroughly enjoyed. At the advice of his captain, he joined the Boys' Amateur Boxing Club, developing a lifelong love of the sport.

In April 2002, O'Grady suffered a heart attack. After an emergency operation, his health recovered and he gave up smoking for two years. O'Grady went back to his 40-a-day habit after his lover and business partner Brendan Murphy died. He suffered a second heart attack on 30 June 2006. He was given an angioplasty operation before being moved to a cardiac unit and made a full recovery.

Personal Life and Health O'Grady had a brief relationship with colleague, Diane Jansen who became pregnant and had their daughter, Sharon Lee Jansen in 1974. O'Grady entered into a marriage of convenience with Teresa Fernandes, a Portuguese lesbian, in 1977, in order to prevent her deportation; he gained a divorce in 2005. His long-term lover and business partner of 20 years was Irish television producer

O'Grady now divides his time between a London flat and his home in a rural area of Kent, where he grows vegetables and cares for various animals, including dogs, pigs, sheep, chickens and barn owls.

Career O'Grady had many jobs in his youth, including various bars, for the civil service and for social services, working around the country. He first turned his hand to drag in 1978, developing the character of Lily Savage based upon various female relatives of his. He eventually started as a stand-up comedian, performing for eight years at the Royal Vauxhall Tavern. O’Grady won a Perrier Award for his comedy act, attracting mainstream attention and presenting television shows Blankety Blank (1997–1999) and Lily Live! (2000–2001).

INGREDIENTS 2 x 400g/14oz cans chopped tomatoes 2litres/3½ pints vegetable stock 4 carrots, peeled & sliced 2 x 420g/15oz cans mixed beans, drained & rinsed 175g spinach 1 tbsp roasted red pepper pesto

METHOD Tip the canned tomatoes into a saucepan along with the stock, bring to the boil, then turn down the heat and throw in the carrots. Gently simmer the soup until the carrots are cooked, about 15 minutes. Stir in the pulses and spinach and heat until the spinach has wilted. Spoon in the pesto and gently mix into the soup. Serve with crusty bread.

1. The Benedictine Monks ran the first regular ferry from Birkenhead to Liverpool. The Monks would row over to the fishing village in Liverpool on market days, and offer the service to travellers. 2. The service was granted a Royal Charter by Edward III in 1330 3. Edward III also granted the right to the Earl of Chester to run the ferry service from Seacombe to Birkenhead, establishing the Wallasey ferry. These two operations merged as Mersey Ferries in 1968. 4. Rowing across the Mersey would take 90 minutes in calm weather; however much longer in rough conditions. 5. In one day, the ferry had over 100 arrivals and departures on the Liverpool – Wirral service. 6. The ferry used to run all night before the opening of the Mersey tunnels. 7. The Mersey Ferries were the only way of getting across the river until the opening of the railway tunnel in 1886. 8. In 1863 when the Channel fleet visited, 55,000 people took the ferry out to see the Navy ships. 9. Before radar was installed in 1947, ferry captains had to rely on fog bells to give them an audible target to aim for 10. The Mersey Ferries were the first in the world to install a radar system for safe navigation in fog, in 1947.

We have 17 years experience in the industry and felt the time had come to showcase the people of Wirral.
