Local builder swops his tools for a kayak to raise money for Claire House. Mike Dudley helped to raise funds for Claire House by taking on a Kayaking challenge with a group of friends, Jackie Evans, John Cookson, Steve Nugent and Keith Conlan. The journey started from Snowdonia and finished in West Kirby along a 70 mile stretch of the River Dee. “ We set off on the 19th May and suceeded in completing the challenge in approximately 3 days, camping along the way!” said Mike of West Kirby Building and Maintenance Services. “I have always admired the work done at Claire House. It is such a great cause and supports so many children that we just wanted to help. We would love the support of the Wirral community to help raise as much money as possible for the hospice so please take the time to visit my JustGiving page at:

The 1000 mile Challenge Lands End to John O’Groats for The Alzheimers Society!

Wirral business man Don Holmes is taking part in a gruelling bike ride from Lands End to John O’Groats to help raise awareness and funds for The Alzheimer’s Society. “There is a public misconception that this disease only strikes older people, but many young people are also affected with dementure or full blown Alzheimer’s. I have a friend who is in care with Alzheimers and it is a dreadful illness” Don told us.
“So I decided to raise some awareness and more importantly some funds to help research the cause and seek a cure. With the help of Off The Rock Cycles in Wallasey who are maintaining my bike and giving me invaluable training tips, I am taking on the 1000 mile challenge! Anyone can get involved but please remember that it will be a difficult challenge and ‘uphill’ all the way!” The ride leaves Lands End on the 27th August and arrives in John O’Groats on the 8th September - that’s around 11 days / 1000 miles / and averaging 90 miles a day! LOCAL LO CAL HER HEROES O OES Paul Hollywood Paul was born in 1966 in Wallasey, Wirral. He studied sculpture at the Wallasey School of Art and quit the course to start work as a baker, first in his father's bakery on the east coast of England and then in other bakeries on Merseyside. Paul Hollywood has succeeded in building a reputation as one of the best known Artisan bakers in the UK – having worked during his career as Head Baker in some of the most exclusive hotels, Cliveden, the Chester Grosvenor, The Dorchester and also abroad for six years at the Annabelle and Anassa Resorts in Cyprus. In 1999 Paul returned to England to begin a successful career as a ‘Celebrity Chef’, co-hosting his own programmes with James Martin for the Carlton food network and CFN Taste. He has also made personal appearances on popular TV programmes ‘Richard and Judy’, ‘The Heaven and Earth Show’, ‘This Morning’ and ‘Ready Steady Cook’, educating viewers on how to bake traditional breads. Paul has also written a best-selling book entitled ‘100 Great Breads’ which is published in ten countries in seven languages and has been voted ‘Top Bread and Pastry Book’ in the English Language by the Gourmand Academy. He contributes regular articles to BBC Good Food, Olive and Delicious magazines, as well as pieces for The Observer, Daily Mail and a variety of radio shows. A regular host on UKTV’s ‘Great Food Live’, he is a recognised force in the baking industry, acting as a Sector Champion for the Government-backed staff training scheme ‘Improve’ and he also acts annually as a judge for The Baking Awards, hosted by the British Baker magazine and sponsored by Tesco, Sainsbury and Asda. The son of a baker with a chain of shops on the East coast of England, Paul originally trained as a sculptor. He first turned his hand to the art of bread-making at the age of 17, when he served an apprenticeship within his father’s business, after which Paul decided to go his own way and joined the kitchens of The Chester Grosvenor Hotel as Head Baker. “All my recipes hold special memories for me, some are of my childhood and others were discovered during my travels aboard. The thriving town of Heswall is located on the west of the Wirral Peninsula.
