e have been lucky enough to chat to you a few times now, but for those who don’t know you can you introduce yourself and your connection to Port Macquarie to our readers? I was born and bred in PMac! I left when it was time to go to uni. Over the last 15 years I’ve predominantly been based in Sydney, with stints in London, Perth and Canberra. I returned ‘home’ around 6 months ago and couldn’t be happier about it. What you have been up to in the last few months? In August, I became a mum to a little lassie named Magnolia, so that has been a great addition to the daily juggle. You have been named as a finalist for Australian of the Year, which is huge. Firstly congratulations and secondly can

you tell us about the process and how you found out you were a finalist? Thanks so much! I feel very humbled, and proud that the disability sector is making headlines. I was fortunate enough to be nominated by a colleague for my contributions to the disability sector, and didn’t in my wildest dreams envision becoming a finalist. Effectively, NSW has condensed all applications down to four finalists and will end up putting forward only one as the state representative for Australian of the Year. The NSW representative will be announced mid-November. I never pick up any calls from private numbers but one just incessantly kept phoning me; so I finally relented and picked up. Lucky I did, as it was the Premier’s office notifying me

I’d become a finalist. It turns out not all private numbers are bad. You really are a woman of many talents; where did your passion for starting your own businesses and helping people come from? That’s very kind of you. Helping people has always been part of my DNA, as far back as I can remember. I recall after my first day of working with those who have a disability I remarked that I was certain I would work in this sector forever. The business part was all accidental (as most great things in life are). The disability sector in particular can be a little 1990’s at times, and I don’t always agree with how things are done and the amount of red tape put up – so I discovered early on that going rogue gives you flexibility and the ability to innovate. And then

the world of bringing an idea to life and all of the stresses and adrenaline that comes with the territory becomes addictive. The Inclusion Sector is such an awesome space to work in as it’s rapidly developing (more so than other developing The reason I have sectors). FOCUS talks to super talented Port Macquarie local Hannah Blanch on her holistic health and wellness brand Zephyr and Salt.

i Hannah. Thanks so much for speaking with FOCUS. Please tell us a little about yourself and your obvious passion for health and wellbeing. Hi Sarah, thanks so much for having me! I’m 29, with 3 kiddo’s aged 12, 2 and 11 months. My passion for health and wellbeing has always played a big part in my life, but I suppose it has been more prominent after having my two boys. Health and wellbeing is so much more than just hitting the gym and eating well. Your mental wellbeing is just as important. My products are focused around self love, meaning really tuning into yourself and your needs, looking inward and recognising how you feel and what you need in that moment. How did you transition your passion into a business opportunity? I started making bath soaks, loose leaf teas and essential oil rollers just because I loved them for myself, friends and family and it just

What exactly does ‘Zephyr’ refer to and how does it reflect your business? Zephyr means “a soft, gentle breeze” which really resonated with me when I was thinking of a name for my little biz. "A soft gentle breeze" to me, sounds beautiful and calming which is exactly how I want customers to feel when they use my products. What inspires you in your daily life? In my down time you’ll find me hanging out with my kids, tending to plants in my garden, or being outside somewhere. I love being outdoors and I try to make the most of it when I can. We live in such a beautiful part of the world, it would be a terrible shame to waste it. Sarah Baker speaks with Mid North Coast local Brianna Doyle on her

latest artistic works. Always open to learning and developing her craft, THIS YOUNG ARTIST TAKES INSPIRATION FROM NATURE and her creative heritage.

H

i Brianna. Thanks so much for speaking with FOCUS. Your work shows extraordinary skill. Tell us about how you find the painting process. Hi Sarah, thank you for your consideration for this interview. I enjoy making art and find the process enjoyable. It’s time I have all to myself to create which gives me a break from reality. I thoroughly enjoy creating from my own experiences and feelings. I like to capture moments that I find inspiring and transform them creatively into art. I typically start by finding a good photograph (usually one of my own). I will sometimes use multiple photos to get the exact image I’m after to then portray in a painting. I will first draw the image to get a good idea of what the painting will look like and once I like the composition I will start the painting process which usually takes several layers. I use oil paints and each layer takes time to dry. I also use other mediums like watercolour and pencils which are much quicker to

produce. Who and what inspires you in your work and what are your favoured materials to use? Nature is one of my biggest inspirations and I’m lucky enough to live in such a beautiful place on the Mid North Coast. I love the beach and how the waves can always look different in their size, shape and colour depending on the time of day. I use a variety of mediums including pencil, watercolour, gouache and oil paint. They all work so differently and I do jump from one medium to another depending on the subject and what I feel like at the time. I get inspired by multiple artists, but my father has always inspired me. He is an artist too. We share our works all the time which continuously motivates us both to create. I also enjoy viewing art exhibitions in some of our local art galleries. There are so many inspiring individuals around us in this area. It’s also easy to see many amazing artists on Instagram and YouTube that often immediately encourage me to create something. GREATER PORT MACQUARIE

It is a great sense of achievement to look back at your older art and see where you have made progress.

Have you always been creative and how long have you been painting for? I would have to say I have been creative my whole life. My dad was always creating something, so when I spent time with him I would almost always be drawing, painting or making some sort of craft. Now, as an adult, I am much the same. I mainly practiced drawing with lead pencil and only recently started making art with more colour which I think helped me understand the importance of values. I dabbled in paints here and there growing up, but I recently started loving the creative art of painting more in the past few years. What have been some your highlights as an artist and do you have any favourite pieces amongst your creations? I enjoy watching my art get better and better over time and seeing my skills improve. It is a great sense of achievement to look back at your older art and see where you have made progress. It’s a hard decision to pick a favourite piece of art I’ve created; I feel more of an attachment to the art I’ve made from my own photos because each piece of art will have memories and personal thoughts connected to them. 28 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE

What creative plans are on the horizon for you? I am enjoying my artistic freedom at the moment, creating whatever I feel inspired to make. I would like to gain further skills to eventually go into an art show or maybe get some of my art into a gallery. I will just see where my art takes me and just continue to grow as an artist. For people wanting to connect with you or find out more about your work, how can they best reach you? I share my art through Facebook ‘Brianna Doyle’s Art’ and a little more so on my Instagram account @briannadoyle_art as well as my YouTube account ‘Brianna’s Art’ where you can watch my painting process and see more of how my art is made. Thanks Brianna. Interview: Sarah Baker.

hat inspired you to start beekeeping? I have always had a huge appreciation and fascination for the natural world. I am and have been for most of my life an avid gardener and understood the important role bees had in pollination. I have always loved watching them fly between flowers and was grateful for their part in providing me with a large percentage of my daily food. So you could say I have always been interested in bees. Most of my life, I wanted to work with animals, but I never saw myself becoming a “Beekeeper”.

One day when a swarm of honey bees flew into my backyard, I found myself being pulled towards it, like I had lost control. I ran outside and stood in the middle of the bees in flight. You might think this is strange, but it created this sense of calmness in me, like the world around me stopped moving and all that was, was us – the bees and I. I stood, looking up and the first thing I noticed was their flight pattern, it was mesmerising. I noticed they were slowly gathering into a large clump on the edge

of my garden fence so I followed them over. I plonked my bum on the ground and sat with them for about 3 hours in complete admiration and wonder until eventually, they lifted from the fence and flew off into the forest behind my property. From that moment on, I was obsessed, they have consumed every part of my mind and I didn’t have any space left to think about anything else. I needed to know absolutely everything and had a MILLION questions. What were they doing and why? Where did they come from? Where

I’d love to grow the business to a size where I am able to offer an opportunity to other women to work with the bees and, of course, me. they were going and so on... I sat up that night researching until 2am and literally had to force myself to go to bed. The research continued, I ordered and read books, befriended other beekeepers and bombarded them with all my questions. I knew I could only do so much reading and and listening, and needed to put all I had learnt into action. I also knew I would learn so much more getting to connect with the bees on a physical level, so I got my first colony of bees. From there, the obsession grew even more, my number of hives increased very quickly. One turned into 3, 3 turned into 6 and so on. Now, when I think about how and why I got into

beekeeping I like to think I didn’t really decide, the bees chose me – not me, them. I also use the term “Beekeeper” but really, I think the bees keep us. I mean, they can leave anytime. What do you think of the perception of beekeeping being a typically male industry, and what are your goals for the future? I have met many women that want to work with bees or even just become a backyard beekeeper, but are convinced that they aren’t capable due to the amount of labour/heavy lifting that is involved. I want to change that way of thinking, because I believe I have found ways for anyone to be able to beekeep, no matter their physical capabilities. Beekeeping is known to be a male dominated industry and I really don’t think it needs to be.

I’d love to grow the business to a size where I am able to offer an opportunity to other women to work with the bees and of course, me. I am a huge believer in the saying “to teach is to learn twice over.” I am hoping as the world begins to open up again, I will be able to provide more educational workshops in the new space I am creating. Not only will I be sharing my knowledge, but it is an opportunity for my knowledge to increase. Ideally, I would like to have my bees on permanent sites. Moving bees is risky, costly and, naturally, bees don’t move their colonies so I’d like to be able to replicate that. As my numbers increase, I am focusing on finding sites that provide a diverse range of food all year round for bees, and a little extra so I can provide a more consistent supply of honey to the community. What have been some of the challenges you’ve had to overcome? Where do I even start? There is so much more to working with bees than just beekeeping. I did find certain things quite difficult, but growing up, my parents often reminded me that if you want and love something enough, you can make it work. So I transferred the doubt of others into fuel to drive me. I also grew up with two older brothers so I have always enjoyed a challenge. I put every ounce of energy I had into increasing my knowledge, becoming more experienced and stronger (I even started doing things like mowing in my bee suit to build up my resilience to the heat). I was pretty determined to not only prove people wrong, but to prove to myself that I am capable of anything. I had never really loved something so much in my whole life and I knew I needed to find a way I could share this with others, but also make this something I could do every day. I realised not everyone has the mindset I have and I knew I could offer something to new beekeepers so they never doubted their ability to care for bees. I wanted them to feel supported. I step each client through absolutely everything, from starting the smoker, how to assemble and reassemble hives, when and how to thieve honey, understanding and reading the bees and so on. I also help set people up with their first hives and sourcing all the equipment. The idea is to show people that beekeeping doesn’t need to be as daunting, difficult and intimidating as it can be made to be. I want everyone’s bee experience to be enjoyable and as amazing as it is for me. I also want to encourage good beekeeping practices and management. Not only do we need to protect the industry but we need to protect our native ecosystems. After all, we are working with European Honey Bees and it is so important that we consider our native bees, other native pollinators and hollow dwelling animals when we decide to keep them. How do people connect with you and try your local honey? People can follow me on Instagram or Facebook under “Sticky Tips Bees”. I am still working on a website. People can also email me at stickytipshoney@gmail.com or phone 0476 333 879. I only produce small batch honey which is often stocked at Bandwagon Cafe in Port Macquarie and The Nook in North Haven. As my hive numbers and honey supply increases I will be looking into new outlets. I also plan on selling it from my new workshop space soon. Thanks Chelsea.

I will be making myself available at the workshop once a week for meet and greet, for people to come talk bees and an opportunity to buy honey and other products. It’s also an opportunity for people to see inside a beekeeper’s (my) shed. How does your mentoring program work? When I began my beekeeping journey, I was so excited and would discuss things with other beekeepers all the time. Most of the time, they were very supportive and open to sharing their knowledge with me. I am still very grateful today for those who did, but

Bob Downe, he dances, he sings and he takes good care of his hair. At present he has a full production show, performing in major venues in Australia and New Zealand. Previously on Sydney Harbour he performed approximately 10 shows per year on our boat and now that the boat is in Port Macquarie he put his hand up and insisted that he wanted to be the first major act here in Port Macquarie. At the time of printing, there were still a few tickets left. If you want to see something special, call us and book in. Since lockdown and restarting with our new vessel, the phone is running hot with enquiries and bookings for Christmas parties, either shared or private.

We encourage all who enquire to inspect our boat and meet us personally, so that we can together plan and give you options to ensure everyone on board is happy. Because of lockdown, everyone is ready to party and “rolling on the river” is a pretty good option. Live entertainment is going to be a feature on the Rhythmboat. We have been in negotiations with so many past performers who are looking forward to a gig here in Port Macquarie. The acts we have so far confirmed and commencing in January include: Eric Grothe and the Gurus Fab4 - Beatles show Last Stand - Cold Chisel show John “Swanee” Swan Southern Land - Icehouse tribute show And Mamamia - a tribute to ABBA show We will also be announcing some big acts that will be coming to Port Macquarie and performing exclusively in our town. Happy November everyone! If you are coming past our boat, come on board and inspect it and say G’day to us!

H

ey Lana, the last time we spoke to you, you had just won The Face of the Port Cup competition that we held, which seems like a life time ago. What have you been up to since then? It’s been a crazy few years! Besides just working, studying and doing the family thing – not a whole lot. I guess I’m in the same boat as everyone else. Covid had definitely made us all take a step back from our busy lives. You recently entered the AUSTRALIAN RODEO QUEEN QUEST, tell us about the competition and how you heard about it. The competition was founded in 1992 by Sharon Piggott and its aim is to empower young rural women to promote the heritage sport of rodeo. I was scrolling through Facebook to kill the time and I saw an ad for the competition and though hell why not, there is literally nothing stopping me from entering. I’m in the final year when I can enter as there is an age restriction. What was it that made you want to enter and what was involved? What were the judging criteria and how did you feel when your name was announced as the winner? There were many components, but I guess the main few were the fundraising, promotion, public presence and horsemanship along with the final questions from the judging panel. It was so different this year as we had to film ourselves and do everything virtually. It was the first time that the competition was judged like this, but it really does show how everyone is

Coffee ON HIGH

J

ared, you are the proud owner of Coffee on High in Wauchope, how long have you had the cafe and can you introduce us to your team? My wife (Suzie) and I have owned Coffee on High for nearly four years. Suzie mostly prefers to enjoy our products, though she gives the much needed mental support to me. We proudly employ 10 staff from our local community who like to be known as the “boss” and refer to me as just the “owner”. We like to think that our staff are our business’s face and backbone, but mostly they are our extended family. Where did your passion for food and coffee begin? My passion for food came from my parents, who always had a market garden and baked our own bread, milked the cow or goat and who encouraged myself and my siblings to prepare and cook meals from a young age. My first meal I cooked was when I was seven years of age. It was probably pretty average though I’ve learnt a little from then. Coffee really became a passion when working in the Snowy Mountains with some pretty talented brew masters and then onto 40 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE

t’s a bright sunny day and there seems to be a sense of ever so cautious optimism in the air. Very tentatively, we all inch forward into a new tomorrow. New South Wales and indeed the rest of Australia is beginning to re-open. It’s been a long and lonely hibernation for us all. Our geographical location in itself, so isolated from the rest of the world, has contributed to the sense of sheer separateness we’ve had to endure. In the not-too-distant future, cherished family and friends will be able to finally reunite. There’s a palpable excitement in the air, however we still remain ever vigilant – expecting the goalposts to change once again. But still, it is definite now. There is a light at the end of the tunnel. A light that promises normality restored. Not just the ‘new normal’, but the old school kind (albeit still with rules and regs), but one where we can hop on planes, cross borders, even just head to the city. One where there’s ‘large gatherings’. One where there’s dancing! We, in the realm of hospitality, are certainly looking forward to this new frontier. Finally we can go back to that thing we do best, which is to host you in our venue and deliver an excellent culinary experience. We’re hoping the transition back will be a smooth one for us all. Just like riding a bike in fact. We know for certain it is already an absolutely wonderful experience to be welcoming back our guests, and we for one

the best possible experience for our customers and friends. It’s my view that customers really want a complete experience. That involves everything from a relaxed environment, simple fresh food done well and always delivered with a smile from our great team. We don’t pretend to be anything other than what we are with pretty much everything made fresh on site. You will see us baking throughout the day and prepping as needed. We insist on only the best ingredients from local partners such as Kenny Little’s, Munster Street Meats, Urban Grain and The Other Chef. Again, we’re all about simple food, well done and nice coffee. Tell us a little about your experience in the hospitality industry? I fell into the coffee industry after leaving the family leather manufacturing business in the late 90’s. I worked in coffee sales and training in Sydney. In 2001 I moved up to Port with a one year old and opened my first cafe, Coffee on William (COWS) serving the two versions of Crema Espresso Bar and The Block Coffee & Chocolate. During that time I was also involved in coffee roastery businesses in Port including Peak Coffee and Holy Goat Coffee. After all that I’ve experienced over the last 20 years in

the coffee game it was time for some Group Therapy!! How have you coped during lockdown and what are you most excited about doing as we return to a degree of normalcy? It’s certainly been an interesting time for obvious reasons and continues to challenge in many ways. Like many, we thought the pandemic would last a few months at worst. Boy we got that wrong! We had to roll with the punches over the last little while and make adjustments in order to continue but we acknowledge that our region escaped unaffected compared to the major centres and indeed other countries. The assistance from both the state and national governments was amazing and helped us keep all our staff and continue trading. Thank you to them! Hopefully it will be business as usual before long but the industry is certainly facing plenty of challenges with major skills shortages. What would be your most indulgent meal of choice? With so much great local produce available there’s no excuse to not eat well. Any cook up is a fun cook up at our house. I do love a good rack of ribs though. It’s also an absolute pleasure to visit some of our fabulous local restaurants.

ey Lauren, we last caught up in May and since then you’ve had some exciting things happen. Can you introduce us to The Wagon? Welcome to The Wagon and Wagon Drinks! The Wagon is an artisan craft range of non-alcoholic beer, wine, spirits, mixers and gifts. We aim to create a favourite place where you can enjoy conversation in a relaxed environment and service with a smile. Our products keep you looking and feeling your best with a clear mind. What is the back story behind The Wagon? My background is in the travel industry, and I felt it necessary since the bushfires and pandemic to work with a business mentor to navigate the last 20 months, which has been challenging for business, particularly those related to tourism and travel. I created exciting new packages to ensure the ultimate unique holiday experience, then just as this was starting to get traction with bookings thriving the second wave of Covid hit. This forced the closure of regional travel and a devastating impact on cancellations, refunds and credits. So it was back to the drawing board. Given these events it was clear that I could not keep my “business eggs” in one basket so decided to jump on “The Wagon”! I had a deep passion to help people struggling

KENNYLITTLE'S Nectar of the gods

Weather is warming up! It’s that time of year when our shed starts smelling like a tropical island. The stone fruit is arriving and the quality is exceptional. Ken calls the Peaches and Nectarines “Nectar of the gods”. This year’s cooler winter has produced this excellent crop. Mangoes are divine. Do you know that’s the one fruit that Ken does not eat? Crazy! Maybe because he sells over 2000 trays a year. Remember to get the most out of

mma, first of all introduce yourself to those that may not know you? I have lived in Port Macquarie most of my life. I love being outdoors and doing things that make me happy. I have 2 amazing kids, 4 and 5 years old and a great husband. I have spent the past 5 years running a successful business, Strive Finance which allows me to help locals achieve their financial dreams. You’re juggling a business, a young family, and I’ve heard you’ve had some health issues. It sounds like you’ve been through a lot in the last few years. Talk us through it? Yes, I do have a busy life. I’ve built my business from the ground up while juggling a young family. Last year I was diagnosed with rectal cancer. It was a bit of a journey, I went through a lot of treatments and operations, and I’m so thankful to be cancer free today. I have so many people behind me. My family was so incredible, my friends and the community were so supportive. So, to answer your questions, yes, I have a busy life, but I love it this way, I totally make each day count!

It has been an exciting 5 years watching Mid North Social build momentum, I’m proud to see more and more local venues filled with musical talent and my little Comedy Club show boasting a belly full of laughs to a sold out audience every quarter. For the last year, I’ve been watching the Mid North Social Facebook page organically grow with followers wanting to know what’s on this weekend. In order to see a united front promoting our local live music scene, I endeavour to share all free live entertainment seen advertised on Facebook. What music does your duo ‘Pure Acoustic’ play and what can audiences expect from your live shows? Pure Acoustic performs acoustic covers of classic hits from across the ages, we play the kind of music you can sing along to, and everyone knows the lyrics. You may have seen us perform at a friend’s wedding or a corporate event over the last few years. We’ve developed a huge repertoire of songs thanks to ‘lockdowns’ and we tend not to write a setlist for a gig but perform on request for the crowd, like a Jukebox but live. It’s difficult to say what to expect, we’re a bit of a chameleon act, performing what suits our audience, whether it be soft instrumental, Aussie pub rock or a jazz standard. so we can network the whole community together about the live entertainment on offer in our region. With community interest and support we aim to publish a useful tool for our entertainment scene: A comprehensive ‘Gig Guide’ for our region by creating one place to find out about all of the free entertainment in Greater Port Macquarie. Lockdowns have impacted so many industries including events and entertainment, how have you been affected and what have you done to keep thriving? Indeed, it has been tough, I’m not going to fluff around the answer! The live music industry has been hit extremely hard in the last 2 years with fires, floods and lockdowns. It’s especially challenging navigating the everchanging health policies continuing to prevent so many musicians from getting back out on their feet. 50% of gigs this year were either cancelled or postponed and a great deal of musicians have had to be replaced last minute due changing health restrictions. We try to wake up positive. I do feel blessed that the venues I work with realise it’s essential to their business to keep the music playing. I know everyone is looking forward to December, a chance to have a boogie on the dancefloor again, a breath of holiday cheer with a great line-up of entertainment in store for Greater Port Macquarie. Is there anything else you’d like to add? It’s a common debate, who is responsible for promoting the show, the venue, or the artist? Well, the answer is both! Also keep in mind it takes an audience to make a musician and a music venue successful, reach out to your fans and show them you care. If you’re a fan, remind your favourite artist they rock by sharing their event and catching a gig. How can our readers contact you, find out more info and support the gig guide? I feel very blessed because I know a lot of people spend their whole lives trying to find the passion or enjoy their job, and this came to fruition very early. Covid of course has been a huge low in all our lives but especially the music industry. What have you been up to over the last 18 months and what are you looking forward to the most about getting back into showbusiness? When Covid hit it was one of the hardest times for me, losing 100% of my work. I also had to release 12 musicians, and two other cast, as I had created shows and cast other members to travel another ship, simultaneously to when I was on my own ship or on the land show. In this case I had to rebuild and relearn. I started my own fire art/macramé company called “deliberate creation” creating amazing pieces of art infusing affirmations with each knot that I created. This has been amazing, it is still going very well now, however now that we are opened up from lockdown I am now starting to get many calls for Christmas events and of course this fantastic event coming up which I cannot wait for! John i s C ongrats on your illustrious 52 year career John, what’s your secret? You’re having such an epic run! I don’t know what it is about music, my body tells me I’m getting old but when I grab the guitar I feel 20 years younger, my voice is holding out really well and my energy levels are really high. I think part of the secret right now is having

a reasonable block of land up here. I do a lot of work with rock and timber and things like straining fences to keep cows out of my shed. I’m looking to do 9 shows in 12 days next year so I’m trying to keep active otherwise I’ll freak out when I’m back on stage, and be out of breath! Have you been able to do lots of writing and recording in between touring? I hear you have some new music coming out!

focus_interview Yeah I’ve recorded 2 songs inspired by Covid, (if inspire’s the right word) the first one’s called ‘The Great Divide’ which is having a real go about how the states love to separate us all, and about missing our families. The one I’m about to release is called ‘Come Back To Me Country’ – it’s about just missing the freedom of getting around all of Australia, not just one state. It’s fascinating finding out all of the different ways people pen their tunes. What’s your songwriting process? How do they come to you? It’s always to do with an idea or words, not so much the music (that comes to me fairly easily, I just have to be careful I haven’t already written that tune before). I find the words have a melody to them. If it’s a sad idea then the melody’s gonna be sad. I don’t know where the ability to do it comes from, I know it’s a craft and I think I’m still getting better at it, but the inspiration has just come from my love of the country. You never know where a song’s gonna take ya, it’s like holding a pencil on a paper and wondering where it’s gonna go. Songwriting is like what Picasso says about art – there’s no rules and I think if you stick to rules and worry about what other people are doing then you’re not Songwriting going to come up with is like what anything different. I remember hearing songs like ‘Rip Rip Woodchip’ and ‘Raining on the Rock’ in the shearing shed of our farm as a kid and I know a 2 year old who just won’t stop requesting to hear the kids’ songs off your family albums. It must bring you a lot of joy knowing your work generates so much nostalgia for so many generations and that your music appeals to people of all ages. Yeah it’s circular, kids are still hearing my music because people like to play it in the car and it helps kids sleep and enjoy the trip. It turns out they want to play my songs to their kids and it goes on and on and on. So I don’t think things are gonna die for me, I think it’s just a matter of whether I’ve got the energy to keep going. I’ve been saying for years, I can’t retire if you keep turning up haha! You play to some huge audiences, do you ever get nervous before shows? Things like open air festivals can be a bit of a worry because you haven’t got as much control over things as when you do in your own theatre shows, so I get nervous about 70 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE

things going wrong like the kick box not working or not hearing properly in my in-ear monitors. It can throw you in the first few songs but once you settle down everything’s ok. The older I get the more I drift too haha and I can lose the odd line and I guess when it gets to the stage where I’m doing that too often, that’ll be the time for me to stay away from it. It’s so much material to remember, are you putting new songs into your new shows? New songs are the easiest because they’re fresh in my mind. The ones I usually bugger up are the ones you know that well and you start drifting and thinking about having a beer with somebody after the show, then you forget where you are. It’s the ones that I’m too relaxed about that cause problems. What music do YOU listen to?

Not much anymore, to be quite honest I’ve always been a bird lover so I listen to them all day up here amongst the gum trees. I guess it’s a bit like someone living on the beach and not swimming. I get to the point where I need a break. I’m doing a festival this weekend so I’m practicing everyday. I just can’t take for granted that I know everything, you’ve gotta be fresh and my fingers get soft if you don’t keep playing so you know once I’ve done that I don’t really feel like sitting down and listening to music, I like to get out into the fresh air and do something. You paint such poetic pictures of our land and people with your lyrics. What are some of the most special places for you in Australia? I like to paint and draw and I’m rapt in the centre and the Pilbara in Western Australia.

n the early 90’s, as few as 20% of dentists in Australia were female. Thankfully, this has changed over recent years. At Sundial Dental, we’re proud to have equal numbers of female and male dentists. Our patients can choose a dentist to best support their family’s dental health and achieve their individual dental goals. Let’s get to know our team of female dentists. Dr Elaine Walker has supported patients in Port Macquarie for more than 15 years. Dr Elaine began her dental education in 1988 at Glasgow University Dental Hospital. “I chose a career in dentistry after I experienced dental trauma at an early age,” Dr Elaine said. “I fell off the monkey bars at school and broke my front teeth. Then I went on to steel brackets and headgear in my teenage years – there was no Invisalign back then!” Now Dr Elaine enjoys being able to restore broken or damaged teeth back to their original appearance to give patients functioning teeth and a happy smile. Dr Karin Welsh joined the Sundial team 13 years ago when she and her husband resettled in the area. Dr Karin has almost 40 years of dentistry experience. She began her career in the early 1980’s as a Dental Officer with the Royal Australian Navy. “I’m really passionate about my work, especially helping those who have a fear of dental treatment,” Dr Karin said. “My career in the Navy and in private practice has been incredibly varied and rewarding.” Recently Dr Karin has developed a special interest in Dental Sleep Medicine and

has undertaken further training to help in the management of Snoring and Sleep Apnoea. Dr Leila Cao joined our team in March after graduating from the University of Melbourne. Dr Leila was determined to find a career path that would marry the two things she loves most – creating with her hands and interacting with people. “Dentistry allows me to problem solve for my patients by understanding their unique needs and challenges,” Dr Leila said. “In a setting like Port Macquarie, I have been able to get to know my patients and form a lasting relationship with the community.” Dr Eshana De Silva graduated from the University of Sydney and joined the Sundial team two years ago. Before her career in dentistry, Dr Eshana completed an Honours Science degree.

“During my Dental studies I gained a wide array of clinical exposure and experience at large busy public hospitals as well as in smaller regional clinics,” Dr Eshana said. “Having grown up in in Sydney, I love the relaxed lifestyle of the Mid North Coast and I’ve really developed a soft spot for this beautiful coastal community.” Dr Eshana is excited by the ever-evolving nature of dentistry and strives to make her patients’ dental experience informative, comfortable and enjoyable. Dental Health is a team effort and we like being part of your team, so if you or your family have been putting off your dental appointments call 6583 3533 to make a booking or visit www.sundialdental.com.au to learn more about our treatments or our other team members.

Hard KNOCKS The ‘Absolutely Everybody’ choir welcomes disadvantaged, vulnerable and marginalised members of our community to come together and sing as part of an unique and supportive creative arts recovery program. T

hank you for speaking with us about your ‘School of Hard Knocks’ Choir Annie! What’s it all about and what makes your choir unique? The School of Hard Knocks Port Macquarie Hastings is a Creative Arts for Recovery Program. The PMH SOHK Absolutely Everybody choir is an inclusive, supportive choir for the vulnerable or marginalised who want to come together, make music and friends. It’s all about the participants. “We are deserving of a voice”. Choirs are popular on the Mid North Coast and several involve diverse people bringing their passion for singing regardless of age or stage in life. What is special about the SOHK choir is its combination of creativity, compassion, spontaneity and individual and group celebration of people living with challenges. What is your role in the group and what do you like most about it? I’ve been the Coordinator of SOHK since March 2021 and I am passionate about this beautiful, diverse group of people who have the courage to show up and be REAL. Their influence allows me to be myself, uninhibited, to sing (badly) and dance, create laughter and just have plain good-natured FUN. All performances are treated as a rehearsal, that way, the participants feel comfortable. The community needs to see what we have to offer, a unique, creative choir. Your guitarist Mat Brooker is a local musician (Winner of 2016 Australian National Busking Championships) who you described as a very talented, humble guy. What are his thoughts on being a part of the choir? The choir is always ready to give a concert and as Mat says “It’s their attitude that keeps getting bigger!” Mat says the “choir has far exceeded my expectation and potential – the morale, creativity, music writing and mateship is phenomenal.” The attitude, the more colourful personalities and the comradeship is powerful. How often do you get together and what is your main goal? Tim, Mat and myself meet each week with this fantastic group of beautiful people, who give it their individual ALL singing, rehearsing and giving performances (restricted during Covid). We meet weekly for rehearsals in PMQ when Covid allows and my aim is to promote this community group in the Hastings for all to enjoy, but we need community support to do this. How has your group developed and improved over time and how does absolutely everybody contribute to achieving your motto of ‘Playing it forward’? range of activities to include more material generated from among the choir members themselves, as well as performance mixes that feature nearly everyone taking their turn to contribute their own special gifts. Gifts such as poetry, written and recited with such raw emotion. Combine that with Tim and Mat’s ability to create on-the-spot melodies to go with the lyrics that choir members produce in their own poetry, and the ability to record these in the recording studio at the Community College, and you have a full creative production capacity. This process honours what choir founder Dr Jonathon Welch aimed to achieve, which has now become his new business motto, “Play It Forward.” Tim and Mat are ensuring that each person in the choir gets the chance to play it forward for others to know and enjoy. You receive assistance from different people and volunteers as well as sponsorships. Who are they and how do they support your choir? Mid North Coast Community College is proud to have established the first regional School of Hard Knocks in 2016. The Port Macquarie-Hastings School of Hard Knocks provides opportunities for members of our community who have experienced homelessness, disadvantage or have been marginalised or

excluded socially, to engage in the arts and develop their skills, confidence and capacity to take new steps to advance their lives. A thank you to Empower Health Services for their recent donation of personalised shirts for the coordinator and volunteers and SOHK lanyards for choir members. Empower Health Services is a boutique NDIS registered provider who has recently expanded Occupational Therapy services to Port Macquarie in July 2021. Giorgia and Gabriel Pisanu, the Directors, believe that every person is different and require a tailored service to meet their unique needs. They are passionate about improving the occupational outcomes for people with a disability and are active members of the disability community. The choir could not do without the assistance of our volunteers and we are always thrilled to welcome more. What are you striving for and how can our community help? Our Choir is in need of ongoing sponsors and donations. Ideally? The School of Hard Knocks would love a long term, disability specific rehearsal area. BUSINESS

VOICE t MICHAEL MOWLE

PRESIDENT PORT MACQUARIE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

T

he Australian domestic economic outlook in the near to medium term will be dominated by rising costs for a wide range of goods, services and labour. To June 2021 Australia’s domestic economy recorded a 3.8% rise in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) which was a better than expected result. However, during the second half of 2021 many early indicators show that there are further cost increases on the way. In recent weeks fuel prices have reached a 14 year high of around $1.50 per litre. Meat and food in general has also risen by 5-6% with warnings of further increases towards Christmas. In addition, international shipping costs rose significantly during the same period which will ultimately result in higher prices for all imported goods. With an extreme skilled labour shortage in Australia construction, manufacturing and many other sectors are under pressure to meet increased demand with a capped workforce. A shortage of materials as well as this labour shortage has already resulted in higher prices for locally produced goods. Although the full impact is yet to be captured in published economic data the overall trend indicates a rising cost of living. Supply chain constraints, higher shipping costs for imports and increased transport costs

flowing from rising fuel prices may constrain domestic production and lead to further price rises. The recent and ongoing housing boom has exacerbated shortages in the supply of timber, steel, concrete and other building products. Major government infrastructure projects such as the Federal Government Inland Rail Project (1700km of new freight rail track form Parkes to Brisbane) and NSW Waters’ drought proofing projects have already taken up a vast skilled labour force. These projects have also drawn down heavily on the supply of construction materials normally sent to other areas. The current spike in energy costs across the UK and Europe may have a ripple effect and lead to higher prices for imports from the countries impacted. A worst case scenario being further inflationary pressure on the national economy throughout 2022. The result would be not only a higher cost of living but also mortgage stress in highly leveraged home buyers on fixed incomes. The good news from economic commentators is that Australia appears to have avoided a double dip recession in the second half of 2021. Despite the lockdowns in Sydney, Melbourne and some regional areas unemployment has remained relatively low with businesses finding ways to trade through increased online shopping and innovations around home delivery or click & collect services. IMF current predictions are that Australia’s

GDP will grow by 3.3% in 2022 and a more sedate 2.5% in 2023. This anticipates a strong rebound in late 2021 from the effects of COVID restrictions with increased vaccination rates and an end to lockdowns. Australia’s strong mining and resources sector which was largely unaffected by COVID has played a major role in our economic performance to date and this will continue for many decades to come. There are many exciting opportunities for our growing region in the next few years as the economy adjusts to the recent dynamics of dealing with COVID. An expected influx of people from metro areas will continue to drive demand for housing, infrastructure and services whilst bringing new businesses to the area. Rising prices and skills shortages could be countered by innovation, skills programs, a resumption of immigration and “boutique” manufacturing utilising robotics. A major positive effect of the recent upheaval is the recognition that we must develop more local capacity and be less reliant on imports. The increased costs of imports and lack of reliability should make locally produced manufactured goods more competitive and attractive. A major boost to domestic manufacturing may be a medium to long term result from the economic impact of COVID particularly in regional economies such as Port Macquarie. GREATER PORT MACQUARIE

dditionally, with approximately 45% of first marriages ending in divorce, the next stage can also result in the blending of families. Blended families are becoming increasingly mainstream but the question of who should receive the benefit of a deceased’s bounty remains a vexatious one. “I don’t want anyone to be able to contest my will” is an instruction we receive quite often when a client gives us instructions for their will. Only certain people can contest your will, not just “anyone”. They have to fall within the category of eligible persons. In NSW, they are: • Your spouse or partner at the date of your death • Your child • Your former spouse • A person who was wholly or partly dependent on you at a particular time in your life, and is a grandchild or a member of your household • A person who is living in a close personal relationship with you at the time that you pass away, eg you may be living with someone who provides you with personal care and domestic rapport but they receive no payment for this and they are not volunteering for a charity. The last two categories are quite wide and can include a parent, sibling or stepchild but they need to prove that they were dependent on you and that they were a member of your household. Even if the persons that you are concerned about may make a claim, there are other hurdles that they have to overcome such as financial need and disentitling conduct. Infrastructure has become quite the election issue. Can you please outline the position of The Sheppard Team? We’re focused on the development of long-term infrastructure to service the needs of our growing population. This includes prioritising and delivering water, sewer, waste, and road projects that Council’s reserve funds are already available for. Delivering the much needed Port Macquarie Aquatic Centre is also a priority. There are also lots of smaller infrastructure projects identified in local community plans in towns and villages across our LGA. These important parks, recreation facilities, amenities, and footpaths

help build the economic, social and environmental resilience of our community. We understand that infrastructure delivery is linked to long-term economic development, so this needs to be delivered in a way that protects the Port MacquarieHastings' greatest asset - our natural environment. The Sheppard Team has a clear infrastructure plan and a process to deliver it (see our website below). A vote for The Sheppard Team is a vote for a sensible sustainable approach to infrastructure that keeps pace with growth, while protecting our environment for future generations.

Sensible, sustainable progress. Our people, our economy, our environment

LAUREN MCALLISTER AND SIMON BANK FROM WEBSTUDIO

THE POWER OF COLLABORATION Bringing a Vision to Life Using a Team of Local Creative Minds

W

hen a customer approaches your business, looking for assistance that is outside your scope - what’s your next step? Is it to turn them away? Do you pass on the details of a person that is better positioned to help them? Here at Webstudio, we believe there is another approach. In your business, when you recognise a client needs something more than you can deliver - choose to collaborate. By building connections with the right people to complete the project, you have the opportunity to grow your skill set and extend your business relationships. It’s important to understand you can’t be everything to everyone. So it’s beneficial to both you - and your customers - if you have a business plan that includes collaborative outsourcing. Sceptical? That’s fair enough! Maybe this story will convert you. Earlier this year, we were approached by a new client needing a website. Jino & Twinkle had a clear idea - to create a range of unique, high-quality beach accessories, that complement the lifestyle we are lucky enough to enjoy here on the Mid North Coast. But they weren't sure how to get there. And that’s where Webstudio came in. We recognised the first step for Jino & Twinkle was branding. After working with them to develop some concepts around the name and

direction, Simon gave local branding expert Jeff Cowan, of CowanCreative, a call. Taking the reins, Jeff helped create Beach Life Crescent Head (BLCH) - a brand concept that is youthful, full of energy - and anchored to its iconic location. It speaks to quality and it represents the idyllic beach lifestyle. As the project continued to evolve, Jeff also worked with Jino & Twinkle on the design of the products, creating and refining the range to ensure the patterns, colours and materials were on brand. By mid year, the products had been developed - and everyone on the team was blown away. It was time to bring the products to life. Our next phone call was to another creative local, Vanessa Lawrence, of The Style Vibe. Vanessa amplified the BLCH brand, by curating collections and styling them to resonate with our target audience. Vanessa assembled models, photographer, videographer and a make up artist, to capture stunning lifestyle and product imagery for the website and marketing. The team managed to perfectly capture the essence of the brand, placing it amongst the beauty of our natural environment. The brand has been connected to its iconic location, associating the entire range as an essential component to a perfect day of surf, sun, and sand. Vanessa’s role with BLCH has been extended and she has come on board as Brand Manager - building partnerships with stockists and

influencers. We already have Inner Vision Surf n Skate on board here in Port Macquarie, Seven 2446 in Wauchope, and Coastal Folk in Crescent Head. All in all, this project has already proved to be an incredible success - and this is only the beginning! It’s a credit to each and every person on the team. Between Jino & Twinkle’s enthusiasm and ideas, Jeff’s creativity and design genius, Vanessa’s ability to translate the vision into reality, Anna’s organisation skills and some web development mastery from Simon - it’s come together better than anyone could have envisaged. The team worked seamlessly, with one goal - to ensure the successful launch of this exciting new local brand. We all operated a bit outside our lanes - and at times we were out of our depth! But that’s what’s great about a like minded, enthusiastic and committed team - we always found a solution. And here’s the thing - this concept, the power of collaboration, can apply to so many different industries! If we open the door to opportunity and look to others to help us fill gaps in our expertise, truly amazing things can happen. So as we head towards the end of 2021 and start contemplating the year ahead, have a think - what opportunities exist in your business, to collaborate and grow? And if you’re keen to see what we created, check out beachlifecrescenthead.com.au GREATER PORT MACQUARIE

LITTLE BEE!

Did you know that there are more than 2,000 species of Australian native stingless bees? Twenty are represented on the beautiful ‘Buzzy Bee’ Hello Koalas sculpture at Bellbowrie Park Business Centre. The artist Lisa Burrell has placed the bees near Australian native flowers that they may visit in real life and has scaled them up three times their normal size so you can imagine just how tiny native stingless bees really are. There is also a much larger European Honey Bee included for comparison. Can you find him? Australian native flowers featured in Buzzy Bee’s design include Golden Wattle, Royal Bluebell, Waratah, Sturt’s Desert Pea and Desert Rose, the Cooktown Orchid, Tasmanian Bluegum, Common Heath and Red and Green Kangaroo Paw, representing all our state emblem flowers. What’s the flower for NSW? It’s usually bright red. Bellbowrie Park Business Centre at 10 Bellbowrie Street is just 5 minutes walk from Settlement City, with special shops that make ‘Buzzy Bee’ feel right at home. The Botanic Merchant offers Australian natives such as Flannel

Flowers, Wax Flower, King Protea and the colourful Pin Cushion. Aleisa Byfield’s stylish studio displays her handmade ceramic jewellery against the backdrop of a live observation beehive under glass that her partner Ian has built to accompany a display of their homemade honey. Cassera’s Patisserie and Bakehouse now has Candied Pepitas, Tomato Relish, Callebaut fine Belgian white and dark choc chips – all perfect Yuletide gifts. Hello Koalas Gift Shop is home to over 10 Hello Koalas sculptures waiting to say ‘Hi’. including ‘Buzzy Bee’. GROWING YOUR FAMILY: HOW A WILL CAN PROTECT YOUR CHILDREN

I

t’s not as fun as creating a gift registry or planning a baby shower, but writing a Will is one of the most important steps to becoming a parent. Welcoming a baby into your family is an exciting time, and there’s a lot to think about - throwing a baby shower or a gender reveal party, creating a baby registry and decorating the nursery. But perhaps the most important thing you need to consider is who will look after your baby, if something happened to you and/or your partner. “When you’re on the journey of parenthood and welcoming a baby, it can be confronting to think about your will and appointing someone else to look after your child,” says Ms Natalie Darcy, Senior Solicitor Estate Planning at NSW Trustee & Guardian. “But it’s an important step to ensure your child is protected and provided for, no matter what life throws your way.”

A will that has been professionally prepared should put your mind at ease by answering the following questions: • Who will be the guardian(s) of your children? How will you want them to be looked after? • Who will be the executor(s) of your will? • How will your estate cover the costs of bringing up your child(ren)? • Who will be the trustee(s) while your child(ren)’s inheritance are held in trust? • What age do you want your child(ren) to receive full control of their inheritance?

• Have you provided for any other dependents, including children from previous relationships? • Have you nominated the right beneficiaries in your superannuation or insurance policy? Ms Darcy encourages all new parents to have a Will in place, review it every three to five years, and update it when there are significant changes to circumstances. DIRECTION. DELIVERY. LEADERSHIP

What a four years it has been! As a first time Mayor I have experienced every crisis that could be thrown at our community. We even felt the effects of an Earthquake which was picked up whilst monitoring the Rawdon Island bridge. I have navigated my way through all of this with a fighting spirit whilst doing my best to deliver on the expectation of the community whilst experiencing division and blocking by the majority of Councillors. I do not feel that this term is the finish line for me but rather just one part of the journey to get to the starting line, which will be the next term of council. So far, I have only shown you a glimpse of what I am capable of and I ask that you support me again to continue to be your Mayor. This time, I also ask that you support me with electing my team of community champions who will support me in prioritising and delivering the core functions of Council for the benefit of the community. Team Pinson is the only team seeking election who can start the job without learning the ropes because you will be electing an experienced Mayor connected to community, two experienced former and current Councillors, a team member who is experienced in Government Grant funding lobbying and a young entrepreneur who has long invested in charity work and in building a successful business employing many people. Our team of community champions are all business experienced, conservative in political persuasion and have an Economic Recovery Strategy ready to roll out if elected as a majority this December 4th.

ECONOMIC RECOVERY STRATEGY Funding - Unlock the $340,000,000 Cash Stash Building - Deliver Roads, Water & Sewer Infrastructure Advocacy – Phone & Internet Reception Support – Sports, Arts & Tourism, Business Connect – Footpaths & Cycleways Enhance – Parks, Gardens, Waterways Traffic – Proactive traffic minimisation

My Team is your team also and we will be strongly focussed on the following; • Resolving not to increase rates for the full next term of the new Council

Governments to co-fund infrastructure to cope with our continued growth

• Utilising some of the $340,000,000 cash stash to fast track long overdue strategic priorities for the region

• Raising the Cowarra Dam Wall to ensure water security is provided for the needs of our growing regional community

• Supporting community projects such as Beach to Beach, Schools to Schools and Creek to Creek pathways

• Championing the new Aquatic Centre for Port Macquarie

• Supporting better disability access and viewing platforms for Tacking Point Lighthouse

• Valuing our unique canals and working with residents to preserve our very special waterway system

• Supporting the Tidal Pool committee in their vision for a tidal pool for our region

• Advocating for a flyover at the intersection of Houston Mitchell Drive and Pacific Highway

• Prioritising the Health and Recreation value of the Lake Cathie and Lake Innes systems

• Protecting our environment and unique amenity by overhauling Council development processes

• Supporting local business by cutting Council red tape and delivering on our Economic Recovery Strategy that sees our business thrive, not just survive

• Rebuilding and re-engineering Rocks Ferry Reserve to be enjoyed again by our community

• Supporting road projects that address traffic congestion • Advocating for a road safety upgrade on the corner of King Creek Road and Oxley Highway • Deleting the Orbital Road blue line that is currently on the table which is marked to demolish homes, school infrastructure and a multi-million dollar dementia village. • Partnering with State and Federal

• Investing in Christmas festivities each year to bring our community closer together • Only focusing on core responsibilities of Council and advocating strongly for representation by Local Members of State and Federal Governments to help us respond to issues important to our community • Focus on strategies to reducing erosion of beach on Illaroo Road Lake Cathie

There’s something special about sitting in a brand new car for the first time. The expectation of comfort, excitement of new technology and the all important handling and performance.

F

rom the moment I saw the new Haval H6 LUX from GWM, I knew I was going to enjoy the weekend. Mmmmm… burgundy red too! Once I’d had the rundown of the features, I settled down into the cabin and made myself comfortable. The Haval has a 6-way electrically adjustable driver’s seat. I was able to find the perfect lumbar support position for my 6 foot 3 inch frame and immediately reached for the multimedia touch screen. I mean, you’ve got to have a play with the toys first, right? Like a Bower Bird on a milk bottle top. The heads up display looks really cool and everything was super easy. Connecting the phone to bluetooth, locating my favourite radio stations, programming the perfect temperature and with Apple Car Play on board, selecting your favourite driving tunes is a breeze. There’s also plenty of juice in the sound system if you’re keen to punch the tunes! Ok, Mick Jagger, start me up buddy, I’m ready to roll. Initially, I went for a gentle cruise through town to get a feel for the car. Rather than a gear lever, the Haval is fitted with a rotary dial gear shift, which keeps the centre console nice and clear. There’s ample room for your coffee/drink cups, a large centre storage bin, a phone/wallet/key shelf and a generous stowage area below the centre console for a handbag. The room in the cabin was really

96 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE

comfortable, with plenty of clear vision all round and heaps of headroom. The 2.0L turbo petrol engine left nothing to the imagination and I was pretty impressed by the power off the mark and uphill. Full 7-speed DSG transmission auto drive, or manual select drive options allow you to have as much or as little control of the gear changes as you like. When you put your foot down, you can imagine the Haval having no issue at all towing your caravan with 2000kg braked towing capacity. The H6 is a mid-sized SUV with a strong, yet sleek appearance and once the doors are closed (with a solid thump might I add) the soundproofing really takes effect. At one point we pulled up next to a big V8 muscle car who gave it plenty of stick as they drove away. The Haval kept all of that noise well outside so no one had to raise their voice to continue the conversation. Safety features were obviously something GWM wanted to focus on with numerous components included, all with the welfare of your family in mind. Aside from the secure knowledge of having 7 airbags, you soon become very used to gentle prompts from features like the autonomous emergency braking, pedestrian and bicycle detection system, lane departure warning, lane keep and lane change assist, blind spot monitors, traffic sign recognition and driver fatigue monitoring - which are all optional. If you’re feeling super trustworthy, the adaptive cruise control will allow you to maintain safe

distance from the vehicles around you as well as keeping to the centre of the lane you’re travelling in. Oh, there’s also a reminder to keep your hands on the wheel if you feel like testing the system hands free. Not that anyone would ever do that. Ever. Not even to show your 10 year old son. Speaking of growing boys, even with both front seats all the way back, there was still plenty of room for his giraffe-like legs to develop and with an adjustable floor in the boot, you can fit in as much sports gear or shopping as you’ll ever need. If I had to find a fault, I’d probably wish the field of vision through the rear view mirror was a little larger, but with all of the angles from the 360 degree camera (which you can set at any angle you like), and I really doubt you’re going to bump into anything. The suspension makes sure the ride is silky smooth, super comfortable and the H6 feels pretty fancy for the price point. Overall, the Haval H6 was a pleasure to drive and for just a little over $35,000, it’s affordable, solid and has a 7 year warranty to boot. Top marks to GWM for producing this stylish, family SUV with a high level of user friendly features, the latest safety technology and all the power you’ll need around town and on the highway. The Haval H6 LUX really holds its own in a very competitive market. Take a test drive of your own at Miedecke Motors Port Macquarie, Hastings River Drive.

LETS GREEN UP OUR COUNCIL! “It’s time for progressive thinking and policies on the things that matter”

L

et’s green up our Council, that’s the message from four candidates from our local Port Macquarie Hastings Greens group. Standing on a platform to bring Green policy on the environment and social equality into our local Council, aligned with the 32 local councils in NSW with Green councillors. Long gone are the days where the Greens are considered extremists, they have emerged as a progressive political party transforming our political landscape from local through to federal politics. The Green team are Lauren Edwards, Stuart Watson, Drusi Meggett and Les Mitchell, with Lauren Edwards as the lead candidate on the ticket in the number one position. All four have an impressive and long list of credentials with policies they believe they can bring to our local council, all stemming from social and environmental integrity for the whole community. Lead candidate and spokesperson for the group, Lauren Edwards, is a local small business owner and has lived, worked, studied and volunteered in the Port Macquarie community over the past 22 years. One of the biggest issues facing our local area is affordable housing – the Greens believe local government has a responsibility to the community to include social housing, and the Greens policy is one of commitment for greater availability of social and affordable housing. We believe in building a productive and vibrant community that is based on both social and environmental justice, in order to have a sustainable community and lifestyle that provides a healthy environment and quality educational and employment opportunities for our young people now and in the future.

98 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE

The policy of the Greens is to provide greater diversity in housing to meet the accessibility needs of changing demographics and disadvantaged groups. Stuart Watson, small business owner and renewable energy consultant, has been involved in the energy industry for 25 years and understands in detail the potential challenges ahead as we plan for a truly sustainable future. He is standing due to the urgent need for real action on climate change. Stuart is a long term resident, and passionately committed to achieving opportunities for all of us to live a better life. Years ago he built his own electric vehicle, and continues to use this form of transport, which will play an important part in our future. Stuart says “We are now living with human induced climate change, effects that have been predicted for years by climate scientists. We owe it to our children and all species to act decisively and immediately to limit the damage. We have the skills and inventiveness to find the needed solutions, and are now being pushed even by our own school children to raise our game.” Drusi Meggett came to Port Macquarie in 1994 with her family. Now retired, she has been a high school teacher, an IT analyst/programmer and a TAFE teacher. She has a long history of supporting community organisations such as Friends of the ABC, Climate Change Australia, Knitting Nannas and the P&C. She has been a member of the Greens for over 20 years. She is passionate about protecting the environment and Climate Action for sustainable development, renewable energy, and protecting our rivers, forests, lakes and

oceans which are long term core Greens policies. Les Mitchell has a professional background in natural resource management and a Masters in Applied Science. He is a very active member of a number of landcare and conservation organisations in the Port Macquarie Hastings area. He is particularly committed to the preservation and management of remaining bushland in this area and the long-term protection of koalas and other threatened species. Les is the President of Port Macquarie Landcare, Conservation Officer Hastings Birdwatchers, member of Climate Change Australia, Funding Officer Friends of Kooloonbung Creek Nature Park and a member of No Electricity from Forests. Greens on Council will promote policies to ensure that all new, and where possible existing, residential areas have dedicated public transport and active transport infrastructure, electric vehicle charging infrastructure, housing with climateconscious design, universal disability access provisions, and high standards for energy and water efficiency including passive thermal heating and cooling design. The Greens believe that there should be a windfall levy for rezoning land from rural to residential or industrial, as huge profits are made by landowners as a result of this rezoning. The enormous increase in value by the stroke of a pen by the Council should be shared with the community to build all of the infrastructure our community needs, from roads to libraries. Written by Monica Hayes, authorised by James Ryan, The Greens, NSW, Glebe, Sydney.

DON’T LET TODAY’S CHALLENGES PREVENT YOUR FUTURE SUCCESS

Y

ou’d be forgiven for taking a short-term view lately, with local lockdowns snapping into place at a moment’s notice over recent months and changes affecting businesses almost every week. However, if your business is in it for the long haul, it’s time to shift your gaze and look ahead to what the future might hold. When uncertainty is the only certainty, planning is more important than ever. Some of our more proactive clients are already working with us to come up with projections, new plans and contingencies. Take a moment to consider these key questions to make sure you’re ready for whatever is around the corner. 1. Why did you get into business? Where do you want to be in 10 years? Have your answers changed? If you’re still committed, then stay on track with your marketing, budgeting and activities linked to your longterm goals.

seachange ACCOUNTING SOLUTIONS

2. What will you do if the economic recovery is slow? Consider what-if scenarios like losing clients or stalling growth so that you can make informed decisions if you need to. 3. How will you forecast when the future is unknown? Past year figures no longer paint a reliable picture. Instead, we need to run modelling that looks at a range of possible scenarios such as changing client numbers, different pricing options and

changing operations. 4. Have you been limping along? If you haven’t already, it’s time to invest in secure technology and integrated online systems that allow you to adapt quickly and work seamlessly from home (or the beach if you prefer!). There’s no need to go it alone. Give the SeaChange team a call to discuss your concerns, and then if required we can do some interactive modelling and present reports to help you plan.

R

yley it’s fantastic to have you back on home turf. Congrats on a valiant effort in Tokyo after a challenging COVID lead up, playing havoc with training schedules keeping the Steelers separated for 18 months. Despite not coming away a medal you came away with huge respect and love from the community at large. The games were electric! Tokyo was intense and all credit to the team – despite an insane separated training season we just didn’t walk away with the medal this time. I’m the first to admit I hate to lose and will do everything in my power to get us across the line. It stems from my my Pop and my Dad who instilled a sense of pride and sportsmanship and an all-or-nothing mentality in me. I also love the Japanese Samurai mentality and ethics – work hard and anything is possible. I make sure I lead by example on the court and give absolutely everything I have until that very last second. In Rio that last second meant the difference between silver and gold. After playing the most games of wheelchair rugby for the Australian team, you are taking a well-deserved break from sport after 19 years of intense training and competition. Where can we find you? For the time in almost 20 years I’m taking

some time to catch up on missed moments due to the demands of a high intensity sporting schedule. I’ll be enjoying some time with the family at King Creek with my wife Crystal and stepdaughters Lillian and Aaliyah. We may even take that honeymoon that is 7 years overdue! After 8 months of training (and not a single beer) I admit to enjoying a few brews in the pool after a big morning at the gym and working in the yard! It’s also back to business in my role with Suncorp and building our new business venture North Brother Cross Fit (NBCF). You credit fitness as the key to unlocking a new life for yourself, creating self-belief, ability and performance – is that what you hope for those who train at NBCF? Fitness is a huge part of both of our lives – we are taking that passion and bringing it to life. We are really focused on creating a fitness community, where every session is coached and programmed, taking time to ensure safety and form. Fitness has been pivotal to my journey and has really given me so many opportunities. To train in isolation takes real mental toughness. Training in a team environment has so many benefits – it doesn’t matter who is the best, as long as you push each other and give your all. I want to be able pass on the experience I’ve gained from years of AIS training, nutrition, performance and recovery.

You are clearly a passionate and determined. What drives you to succeed personally and as a leader? I’m definitely self-driven and a highly competitive person. Every day I just want to be ticking things off – what’s next? Growing up with a disability locked in my determined mindset. If there is an obstacle, I will find a way to get around it. You need to push harder and really earn it. If I didn’t know how to do something, I would develop the skills to achieve it. I’m still learning every day as a person, competitor and a leader. The unwavering support from our Port community is always behind me, driving me when I train and compete. This community came behind me in the early years to support me and fund my campaigns – I’ll never forget that. They are still behind me and I really can’t thank them enough. I want to give back for all they have done for me. A big shout out to the teams at Toyota, Suncorp/GIO and Woolworths who have supported me on the way – it takes a village. Biggest risk you’ve ever taken? The biggest risk I took was at the 2016 Paralympic final against the USA - I kept pushing to the very last second and took a must complete pass and managed to thread the needle, helping our team get into double

overtime scoring a critical goal. We went on to win the game and eventually the gold medal. It was huge gamble; stress levels were insanely high, but it paid off - it could have very easily gone the other way! Biggest regret? No regrets! Things happen for a reason and there is always an opportunity to learn. I have however, been disappointed in myself, with my level of commitment to training preparing for Beijing in 2008. I was 18 and 30kg overweight – we still achieved a silver medal. I could have trained harder and been more focused on my fitness. It turns out that experience was a blessing as it drove me to take my fitness, focus and nutrition to the next level and turn that silver into gold. Who were your Mentors? Surrounding myself with a positive community is really important to me. My Pop always championed me and told me from when I was a little boy I could do anything I put my mind to. He wanted me to experience everything other little boys did – he took me water-skiing, bought me my first motor bike and taught me my values in life. He helped me to dream and feel free, telling me when I was 5 years old, I would compete in the Paralympics. Dad taught me to fight for what I wanted

and never let me win anything or made things easy for me because of my disability. His actions spoke louder than words and he taught me to do things for myself and be fiercely independent. I hated wheelchairs and got everywhere on a skateboard. It wasn’t until that skateboard was stolen that I finally gave into my St Aggies year 6 schoolteacher Tom Kennedy, former wheelchair rugby Paralympian who encouraged me to jump into a chair for a game of rugby for school sport – my world completely changed. I was finally on an even playing field with my mates. Thankfully Crystal and my family help me to stay grounded amongst the pressures of competition. Best piece of advice? I would encourage anyone to get involved in sport. It gives you so much more in life – it teaches you discipline, resilience, mental and physical toughness. It has made me who I am today. Will we see you in Paris in 2024? After 20 years in sport I will be taking a 5-6 month break to really refresh, recharge and refocus. I’m keen to give back, mentoring more kids and sharing my journey and knowledge. I want to show them how they can push past their limits and allow them to prove to themselves that anything is possible. GREATER PORT MACQUARIE

FRANCIS FURNITURE

o Chris, how long have you been designing and hand crafting solid timber furniture? At Francis Furniture we have been hand crafting solid timber furniture since 1982 and it has evolved quite a bit from there. I started doing furniture in my apprenticeship days building boats back in Sydney. Most of the boats we were building were solid timber boats for surf and rowing clubs and such. The rowing clubs used to slow down in winter time and quite often if we couldn’t get ourselves bigger boats we began doing a bit of furniture work. Beside your great furniture designs, what other services do Francis Furniture provide? Well besides the custom service we also do repairs of furniture. We also provide select grade timbers for the woodwork enthusiast and for school projects. We also supply a large range of Howard furniture care and restoration products. creating pieces from start to finish? Well, I have always loved working with timber itself, that was why I wanted to be a boat builder in the first place – I thought I like boats and working with timber so I was going to be a timber boat builder. But Cedar was one of my first loves of timber, the rich, dark cedar which we used to build kites and little boats out of window frames and scrap timbers out of when we were kids. From there it blossomed into different timbers, Cypress Pine was another early one. Each timber has its own character and its characteristics for building. Things like Blackwood, it’s a beautiful timber when you cut it, keeping that nice fresh cut. Rosewood however cuts at one colour, and then ages off to a different colour, rather like Teak, it can have a white or even a greenish colour, and then within a fairly short time it goes to that nice brown deep colour. So all timbers vary in colour and texture which is fascinating. I love all the shapes and grains in timbers, each one you pick up is different and each piece has its own personality and uniqueness. When you finally complete a piece furniture it is very pleasing. Each craftsman takes the piece of timber right through from start to finish on a piece, so the whole satisfaction of starting the job, finishing it off, polishing it up and delivering it, which is just the ideal, instead of only building one component. How have things evolved over the years with your designs? Well we initially started out doing pine

Rosewood however cuts at one colour, and then ages off to a different colour, rather like Teak, it can have a white or even a greenish colour, and then within a fairly short time it goes to that nice brown deep colour. furniture, we could see that the market was there at that time in early 1980, but we did a better quality pine furniture. So we started out with fairly rudimentary capabilities, we designed reasonably simple designs to suit the pine market, keeping up with the higher end of the market. After a short time, we thought we would start doing hardwood furniture, and we were early pioneers of hardwood furniture, no doubt they had been making Blackwood, Rosegum and similar furniture for hundreds of years but really there wasn’t much around for the commercial market. We basically evolved the company into the Francis Furniture that you see today, doing fairly sophisticated designs and custom building. Tell us about the history of Francis Furniture, how did it all get started? Back in about 1980 our sister Kerrie and her husband Neil moved out of Sydney to

Port Macquarie. Soon after I drove up the coast to see for myself what could possess an otherwise sane and rational person to up stumps and move so far north. You see having been born and raised in Cootamundra, way south west of Sydney, the move north to the big smoke for work opportunities was plenty big enough and far enough for me. So it was that I found myself driving around this seaside town full of koalas and kangaroos and King Neptune’s crocodile. Having had my horizons expanded in surprising and exciting ways I returned to Sydney and settled back into the life of a young shipwright on the northern beaches only to be awakened by the suggestion during a phone conversation to the idea of moving up to Port and starting a little business making furniture. And so it was that I along with my brother Kim moved out of the big smoke up the coast to the big hope of a new life in Port Macquarie. Custom designs are also a big part of the business, how do you work with your customers to create pieces that are just right for their homes? Generally if a customer knows exactly what they want, then that is ideal, we can deliver their desired outcomes. If they don’t know exactly what they want, we can work with them to achieve a satisfactory outcome by going round to their place and assessing their current furniture, and offer some suggestions and solutions. m2 haus

FOCUS speaks with owner / builder Mathias Blume on his construction brand M2 Haus.

H

i Mathias. You have recently established your own building company here in Port Macquarie. Tell us a little about the services you provide. We are a building and construction company specialising in high performance building methods including energy efficiency practices. We use healthy and sustainable building materials. The brand name M2 Haus is an ode to your German heritage. Why did you choose this title? The brand is now five years old but we have just recently launched in Port Macquarie. We have built several projects in Sydney over the past five years. Yes, people said to me that I

112 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE

focus

should provide all my experience from from overseas and apply it here in Australia. So I chose to use a name which reflected that German heritage. I understand the ethos of M2 Haus centres on the desire to build healthier homes with a significant focus on more energy efficient and sustainable builds. In what ways do you achieve these notions and why is this important to you as a builder in today’s world? I have witnessed shocking building conditions and practices here in Australia. I thought this is not how work should be carried out. I want to demonstrate that even small changes can have a significant impact on the longevity and performance of a house.

Usually nobody talks about how a house should perform. Due to climate changes and price increases people are starting to slowly think about it. At M2 Haus we are building to standards that are compulsory in German buildings, and have been for more than twenty years. These techniques, materials and methods are still fairly new to the Australian market. For example, we build houses air-tight. This lets the house perform in critical conditions. We are using building products without formaldehyde and reducing the amount of solvent used during the building process. We carefully select suppliers using sustainable products and we direct our subcontractors to reduce waste on our construction sites. These key building differences would certainly set M2 Haus apart from its competitors. Do you think these indicators will work to improve the building industry as a whole and as such improve the quality of life for people and the planet? I believe the way we are building will be compulsory over the next ten to fifteen years. We have received fantastic feedback on our builds including a family who mentioned that over a period of one year they had saved 70% of energy compared to previous years and the family is all sleeping better. This is what we aim to achieve for people. Thank you Mathias. Interview: Sarah Baker.

Staging t

SESS AND SASS DESIGN CO

A

t Sess & Sass Design Co, we have been staging properties for over 4 years now. We personally source and hand-select all furniture, accessories and colour palettes for each staging project to cater to an authentically coastal lifestyle. What is property staging you may ask? It is essentially the preparation of a private residence for sale in the real estate marketplace. The goal of property staging is to make a home appealing to the highest number of potential buyers, this in turn aims at selling a property quicker and for the highest possible price. Home staging is crucially different from your standard Interior Design projects. Instead of a scheme created to suit the owner’s personal aesthetic, staging aims to appeal to the broadest demographic. Simple, classic, pared-back staging with a relaxed coastal vibe, we believe, assists in selling properties in Port Macquarie. Some of the key benefits we believe when staging your home:

Achieve Maximum Sales Price – A styled property improves the quality of marketing content, which generates more interest in the property online resulting in more offers, driving up the price. Drive Foot Traffic and Interest In Your Listing – We take the time to understand the buyer’s demographics and style the property to appeal to the majority of buyers in the area. By appealing to the lifestyle aspirations of the buyer, this generates more foot traffic and interest in the property. Reduce Time On The Market – A styled property generates more interests in the listing, therefore, it is more likely to sell faster and for a higher price than a comparable un-styled home. Evoke Buyers’ Emotion – Our focus is to create emotional appeal so that the buyers can fall in love with the property. An emotionally connected buyer is more willing to act fast and pay a premium price. We know selling your home is a pretty big deal. That’s why we offer a free 30 minute on-site property staging consultation, followed by bespoke proposals based on your property and needs.

expert personal who are Clean Energy Council (CEC) qualified electricians. The benefits of solar power are becoming increasingly more prevalent in today’s society. From your point of view, what are the key benefits that solar systems provide? Solar produces clean, renewable energy which is better for the environment. Adding to this, a solar system will save our clients money and reduce their electricity bills. They require little maintenance over the lifetime of the system and can increase the value of your property. How much money can we really save off

our household bills if we have solar panels installed? If we are talking residential, savings on a 6.6kw solar system for a family home would be on average $450 per quarter. The bigger the system the greater the savings! What packages and special offers are available for people who engage your services? As we are local company, clients have peace of mind that they have a reliable solar professional who is just around the corner. We tailor a solar solution to the client’s needs, however if we were to use a 6.6kw as an example, packages start from as little as $3,500. For people wanting to connect with you or book a quotation, how can they best reach you? Martin VA R L O W LOG HOLLOW

What do you get when you combine Art with Woodwork & Gardening? Log Hollow! Experienced landscaper Martin Varlow stumbled upon a unique idea while bushwalking and ran with it, creating one off art pieces with natural wood hollows and succulent plants.

H

i Martin, thanks for talking with us about your unique log planters! Please tell me a bit about yourself and how this new idea came

about. Hi Sarah. I came from a 25 year career in Landscape Construction on Sydney’s Northern Beaches when I moved to Port in 2002. I have a deep appreciation of all of Mother Nature’s flora however my passion is succulents and all their different varieties. While bushwalking back in 2017 I stumbled upon a hollow log that had such unique markings and colours through it that (after checking to make sure I wasn’t disturbing any of our bush friends) I just couldn't resist taking it home. I literally just put a succulent in it and placed it outside in our courtyard. My friends and family kept saying how great it looked and asking if I could make one for them. From there, the idea came that others might 116 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE

focus

like their own unique piece! I began to polish the bark off them and this brought out the true nature of each individual piece. The colours, the grain, the termite tracks, all make the logs so uniquely its own! I now have a fantastic hobby which I showcase as a permanent stall holder at both the Foreshore Markets and Bellingen Community Markets... which I love! :-) What is your favourite part of making these natural creations and what makes them so unique? There are two parts equally as exciting for me. The first is the sourcing of the raw product (naturally hollowed logs) from the bush, which to me is like a treasure hunt! The second part is dissecting the logs into smaller size pieces using a chainsaw. Each piece presents a truly unique hollow, with all its different individual natural features. This is when my true creative juices start to flow as I imagine how I can bring each piece into its own and showcase its uniqueness! I also enjoy deciding what type of succulent

or other plant would suit the colour, shape and size of the hollow, styling it to suit. I have different styles of Hollows, such as large gnarly pieces that would be right at home on the floor, small side tables, centerpieces for your dining or outdoor table, small hollows just perfect for a bedside or office table and everything in between! How do people look after them and are they happier indoors or outdoors? They take very little care, as I mainly plant them with succulents which traditionally need very little water to survive. I’d water them about once a fortnight. They are happy just about anywhere in your home, however they do need to be placed in a well lit, natural light area when indoors. Of course they’re right at home outdoors on your verandah or under a pergola. What are your favourite types of wood to work with and how long does it take to make one from start to finish? Most of the wood is Eucalyptus which has about 900 variants. Some of my favourites are

the Bloodwoods, with their rich red colouring. The Blackbutt, Ghost Gum and Grey Gum offer beautiful honey coloured variants also. It can take up to 3-4 hours from sourcing the piece to the finished product, depending on its shape and features and what I have planned for it. How long have you been making these and how has your business evolved since creating the first one? I started creating them for others in late 2017. With a bit of trial and error, I have refined them to what you see now. I started to show them every now and then at the local markets in early 2018. The demand and feedback was so overwhelming that I am now a regular at two monthly markets and any special community events that call for a product such as mine. Do you enjoy doing the markets and what kind of response do you get from your customers? I really enjoy the markets as you have people attending from far and wide, locals

and holiday makers and it’s always great to have a chat. As my hollows are individually unique in their features, I’m usually met with wide-eyed compliments, even if they don’t purchase, which is always nice. I love meeting the children who come to pick one as a gift for a loved one as they peruse the range like they’re in a lolly shop, trying to decide which one would please them most! For people who struggle to even keep cacti alive, please tell us about your artificial range. I started using artificial plants for that very reason and also for commercial spaces where apart from the occasional dusting, they need zero maintenance and care. These also form part of my “Forest Art” collection which are more abstract and unusual pieces, some with no plants at all. I have pieces ranging from small for desks, side tables or benches to very large freestanding and wall statement pieces that would look fantastic in any public foyer/reception area!

Your products are a nice mix of art, woodwork and plant care. Do you have any other creative pursuits or hobbies? This is my creative hobby and I enjoy spending my time creating all my pieces. It’s almost meditative... My passion is a life-long love of surfing which I try to fit in when I can. I think I have salt in my veins! My wife, Cindi, and I enjoy a mutual love of live music and travel so we pursue both as often as we can. Is there anything else you’d like to mention? I’d like to say that I do not drop standing hollow trees as they are habitat for our wonderful fauna. I usually pick pieces from the piles left by Forestry after logging. Before I remove them, I make sure they are not inhabited by any creatures either in or around them. I’d also like to thank all my lovely loyal customers who, over the years, come back to buy various types of unique gifts for their friends and family. It is great to share my Hollows with you! What markets do you frequent and how can people get in contact? I am a regular at both the Foreshore Markets in Port Macquarie which are held on the 2nd Saturday of each month and the Bellingen Community Markets which are on the 3rd Saturday of each month. You can contact me for viewing at my home or any questions at Loghollow.com.au or on 0405 284 607. Thank you, Sarah! Thanks Martin! GREATER PORT MACQUARIE
