elcome to the May edition of FOCUS! A big shoutout to all the fabulous mothers in the Coffs Coast Community. Sunday 9th of May is Mother’s Day and in the sake of honouring motherhood, celebrate the day with the mother figure in your life. If we had a dollar for every time we are asked how we find interesting people to interview each month we would probably be rolling like Kings and Queens. Truth be known, we are in shock ourselves that there are so many fantastic people living here amongst us. People that truly believe in their cause... People that keep-on keeping-on. It’s inspiring. We feel truly blessed to be able to present to you a positive, inspiring and beautifully presented magazine each month. The deadlines and late press days suck, but we love this job. Our days are spent chatting to people, great people that are doing great things! And how do we find them? Well, it’s a combo of

COFFS HARBOUR CITY SES

Martin Wells is the Deputy Unit Commander at the NSW SES Coffs Harbour City Unit. His background as an Intensive Care Paramedic and also with the Westpac Rescue Helicopters makes him a valuable asset for the Coffs Coast as part of the SES. We had a chat to him about what this role means to him and what motivates him to volunteer for his community.

H

ey Martin, Tell us how long you have been a part of the SES here on the Coffs Coast and what inspired you to be a part of it? Coming up to 18 months now, a relatively short period of time compared to some of the veteran volunteers we have at the Unit (the Commissioner will be presenting Ian Christensen with his 40 years of service medals this year and he’s done and seen everything most people would never want to see, from cutting people from the wreck of the Cowper bus crash, to rescuing people from their homes in raging flood currents in Coffs Harbour in 1996). It always sounds clichéd but being in the emergency services, assisting others, and making a difference in people’s lives in their most compromised time of need gets in your blood. down cliffs, to industrial accidents, to water rescues, assisting ambos to gain entry to premises, early access CPR and Defibrillation, missing person searches, and body recoveries to deliver loved ones back to their families. On a day to day basis I need to ensure we’ve got sufficient crews (and suitably qualified drivers for our various rescue vehicles) to respond in a timely manner to assist the community, that we have sufficient training and courses to support our members and the needs of the community, that our equipment and fleet are ready 24/7, and that when activated or deployed the volunteers are well cared for, resourced with equipment and sustenance, and that they all come home safely to their families after assisting other families. Another critical role of this position is ensuring that every member is supported emotionally and mentally as they are placed in often confronting and personally

challenging situations and environments. Utilising access to the NSW SES Peer Support Program is critical to ensure the longevity of these volunteers, and to ensure their personal, professional and home lives are not impacted by giving back to the community. With the Deputy Unit Commander role also comes the responsibility of attending and managing larger incident scenes where SES is the Combat Agency or GLR response as the Incident Commander, working closely with our fellow emergency services (police, ambulance, fire) to ensure the best outcome for those affected, or working in the Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) a command hub that is “stood up” in times of significant events that will have longer operations, or require coordinated responses across multiple agencies. What has it been like to be an SES member over the years and what keeps you coming back? There is no doubt assisting another humans (or animals) in their desperate time of need is an incredibly rewarding experience. Quite often we are their last chance and hope of survival, or their only way to be removed from

their perilous circumstance. On a broader scale being there for the entire community during large-scale natural disasters is critical from not only an emergency response perspective, but a preparation, communication and recovery perspective. We’ve got 98 active volunteer members who devote their spare time to the community. Seeing the way these volunteers, who all have their own lives, work, or businesses, drop everything in an instant when the alert goes off and race off to assist complete strangers is incredibly inspiring and fills me with pride every time they pull on the orange uniform and race out the door lights and sirens wailing. >>> Continued over COFFS COAST

We have seen some very unpredictable weather in recent years from fires to floods. What part does the SES play when we see these weather events happening? We have In-water Flood Rescue operators (which includes what people would know as “swift-water rescue”), On-water Rescue operators (boats), On-land Rescue operators (trained in ropes and other devices at waters edge), as well as height qualified storm teams for roof-related emergencies, ground qualified storm/flood teams for water diversion, pumping and sandbagging, and rescue teams for All Terrain Vehicle (ATV) operations/ searches/beach and bush rescues. This incredibly versatile ATV was donated by the Pink Silks Trust to the Coffs Coast community for use by the emergency services, and is maintained and crewed by the Coffs Harbour SES team. When our field crews are active, we have a highly skilled support operations team that handle SES radio communications, data entry and active job management via specialised computer software. They also support the field teams with equipment sourcing, Incident Management Teams, welfare, finance management and sustenance. When our teams are deployed out of area (we currently have several members in Brewarrina and Bourke assisting with flood operations, and 18 COFFS COAST

have sent Coffs members across not only NSW but interstate to assist a national response) they ensure accommodation, travel and support is confirmed. During other emergencies such as the recent bushfires, the SES plays a support role providing communications, logistics, transport and management teams. The SES is also responsible during events for community messaging, preparation, response and assisting with the recovery phase. During a significant weather event there is often sufficient time to ensure the community is well prepared and mindful of safe practices, or expected water levels in the coming days. We utilise social media extensively (and I would encourage people to search for and follow our Facebook and Instagram pages) for real time information and warnings. We also work closely with all Coffs Coast media outlets providing timely information, interviews and warnings. What sort of training do you have to go through to handle these events? We are always seeking active members to assist their community and as you can see there is a diverse range of pathways for

members to embrace. Being in the field is not for everyone, however we need highly skilled and IT savvy support operations teams as well. All training and uniforms are provided at no cost to members by the NSW SES via a mix of online e-learning, local face-to-face training, and out of area specialised training such as flood rescue training at the Penrith White Water Olympic venue, or Port Macquarie where we will soon have a Heavy Vehicle Rescue professional development training day. I would encourage anyone with a desire to extend their learning, get outside their comfort zone, and who have a strong desire to assist others to apply to become a member via the NSW SES website (www.ses.nsw.gov.au). What are some callouts you have received in this past rain event? This past rain event saw the Coffs SES respond to 142 calls for assistance in a 7 day period ranging from life-threatening flood rescues, to water inundation into homes, to leaking roofs, to property protection/ sandbagging, to road crash rescues, to aerial reconnaissance of the broad-scale damage, to property assessments assisting Resilience NSW

and Coffs Harbour City Council during the recovery phase. Can you describe one of the callouts the SES have been on this last event? In what was one of the busiest nights in recent times the SES crews had 15 in-water flood rescue calls for help from stranded property owners, or drivers of vehicles washed from roads. In one street alone we had 9 in-water flood rescues happening simultaneously with people clambering onto roofs of homes, panicking as water rose several metres within their homes, and watching their entire home and possessions destroyed by Mother Nature. i Dana. Your business Wild Hearted World has taken us on exotic trips around the world. Take us back to how you got started in the travel industry... I’ve grown up with a thirst for adventure, it’s hard not to after being brought up amongst the beauty that is the Coffs Coast, where days were brimming with experiences between the sparkling coast and lush mountains. Besides the Mid North Coast, my childhood was filled with travelling all over Australia, experiencing places that many would not think to explore. One year we’d be 4WDing the Strzelecki Track in the South Australian desert and sleeping under the stars, the next I was being towed behind a tinny on a surfboard through the crystal waters on the Coral Coast of Fiji. I’ve got to thank my parents for showing me the magic that our world has to offer and instilling wonder and curiosity into every fibre of my being. It gave me the confidence to take on the world, and travel taught me more than any classroom ever did. After I finished my studies, I took off to London on a one-way ticket and spent the

following three years exploring the enchanting European trail, sailing the high seas on board a private yacht whilst working for a Middle I craved location Eastern royal family. My best advice is to dedicate an hour a week to draft your plan for the following week and get posting so you can engage with your clients.

I am incredibly grateful to each and every one of my clients as they all trusted me to do whatever I needed to do to get them the best outcome, they gave me the space to get on with it and get the work done.

Four years later and what a life it was – roaming freely 11 months of the year, working remotely from some of the best destinations in the world, writing freelance for travel blogs and magazines. A dream come true some would say… Tell us about this. Completely, life by design. The motivating factor behind me working for myself was freedom, and this move gave it to me in every sense of the word. I was free to travel the globe full-time doing what I love while getting paid for it and I had freed up time to pursue writing and photography which led me to work with tourism boards, brands and magazines. 24 COFFS COAST

focus

In a normal year, I would come back to Moonee a week before Christmas and enjoy a month at home, catching up with family and friends, and making the most of summer on the coast before taking off overseas for the following 10-11 months of the year. I did this on repeat for four years and the only thing that has momentarily stopped me is the international border being closed due to Covid. A question I get asked a lot is “how do I choose where to visit?” The destinations change every year and most of the decisions can be last minute when working within the travel space. You could get an email or phone call asking if you could be in California next week for a press trip or familiarisation.

At the start of the year, I would note where in the world I needed to be for travel conferences and events and then work backwards from there, mapping out everywhere I love to visit in between those commitments. I’d leave those gaps as a tentative guide and revisit my ideas often as new paid travel opportunities popped up along the way. Let’s get real – how has Covid affected you? My world literally stopped. Within hours, I had lost the upcoming year’s worth of work and income and was working non-stop for free to undo the previous year’s worth of bookings, all while navigating a situation no-one had ever seen. I am incredibly grateful to each and every one of my clients as they all trusted me to do whatever I needed to do to get them the best outcome, they gave me the space to get on with it and get the work done. I know a lot of others in the travel industry didn’t have that luxury as tensions ran high amidst so much uncertainty – it either brought out the best or the worst in people. Aside from that, the biggest challenge has been staying grounded in gratitude and trusting

that everything will unfold as it needs to. With no set date for international borders reopening and domestic borders frequently snapping shut, the uncertainty and constant change have been mentally draining. Some bookings I have booked/rebooked 7-8 times now – it’s getting old, but I’m hopeful that individual states get a better grasp on managing cases so we can avoid any unnecessary border closures in future. There is a silver lining though. You’ve now taken on coaching other travel businesses and consulting with them about growing their business and socials etc. Something you would not have had the time for previously. What advice have you been giving fellow travel advisors with the ongoing pause on travel? This is something I have wanted to do for years, so it’s been pretty awesome to be gifted time to pursue a new direction. I’ve invested tens of thousands of dollars over the past five years to learn the ins and outs of social media to grow my account @wildheartedworld and since then have written an ebook to help other small businesses amplify their own accounts. I’ve also been coaching clients that need more targeted direction and accountability to succeed. My best advice is to dedicate an hour a week to draft your plan for the following week and get posting so you can engage with your clients. I’m always happy to answer any questions too, so feel free to DM me. There has been some positivity and growth in tourism of late. What’s been happening in the world of travel the past couple of months? The past couple of weeks have been extremely promising with a spike in future bookings, especially within the past month. I’ve seen an increase in domestic travel for the coming months, and people looking as far forward as 2022 and 2023 for international bookings. It’s exciting to see that consumer confidence is slowly returning and people are itching to scratch that travel bug within our own country and across the ditch in New Zealand, while staying hopeful for the return to international. Australia reopening domestic borders and the NZ bubble are really pushing this along, as are the incredible tourism operators who have responded to the downturn in bookings with

generously flexible cancellation policies. Keeping within Australia and New Zealand, what is hot right now in terms of booking the best travel destination? To start, how lucky are we to live in Australia? We have pretty much anything you can find internationally on our doorstep, if not better. It’s heartwarming to see everyone taking this opportunity to explore our own backyards, visiting places that they’ve had on their bucketlists for years and helping get the tourism sector back on its feet. I, for one, had been saving Uluru for my grey nomad years, but bit the bullet in February and flew out there for a 12 day roadtrip from Uluru through to Kings Canyon, the Mereenie Loop and on to Alice Springs. This trip is now firmly etched in my memory as one of my all time highlights from anywhere in the world, and I’ve seen a few places, close to 70 countries across six continents, many of them multiple times. For my clients, the majority of requests have been for The Kimberley, Margaret River,

Hayman Island, Tropical North Qld, Norfolk Island, Port Lincoln, Adelaide, Tasmania and Byron Bay. And now that New Zealand has reopened to us, demand has been hot for skiing the South Island over winter. For anyone looking for travel inspo – how can they get in touch? I live and breathe travel on Instagram, you’ll find me over at @wildheartedworld, and you can get in touch with me through my website or on Facebook. wildheartedworld travelmanagers.com.au/ptm/danabrown/ TravelManagersDanaBrown What’s the number one thing you miss about travelling? This may come as a surprise to you but it’s FREEDOM and the unknown. Being able to take off at the drop of a hat to immerse myself in a new country, have unique experiences and be constantly learning and challenging myself, is what I miss the most.

his month I wanted to tie in with IDAHOBIT Day which is short for International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Interphobia and Transphobia. In other words? It’s a day for the whole community to go rainbow and stand out against LGBTQIA+ discrimination. Thirty one years ago on May 17, 1990 the World Health Organization removed homosexuality from the Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems. International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Interphobia and Transphobia celebrates LGBTQIA+ people globally, and raises awareness for the work still needed to combat discrimination. Transphobia Describes negative feelings or actions towards someone who’s trans or gender diverse. You may have heard transphobic language like “tr*nny”or seen restrictions on the way that people are allowed to express their gender. Things like which uniform you’re allowed to wear or toilets you can use. FRESH WATER ARTS 2021 EXHIBITION

A beautifully curated collection of hand woven fibre art has been delicately created by 11 master weavers from the Saltwater Freshwater region and have now become part of The Saltwater Freshwater Arts 2021 touring exhibition. Whilst worn on opening night by Aboriginal girls and women, they felt connected to Country and connected to their ancestors. Michelle Flanders talks us through the project and shares the layers of story within.

H

i Michelle. The Saltwater Freshwater Arts 2021 exhibition is a touring exhibition consisting of an Aboriginal art award and contemporary cultural objects, with the woven pieces being part of the exhibition from a separate project. What was the concept behind these extraordinary garments? Birpai master weaver Trish McInherny sparked the idea for the project at a Saltwater Freshwater weaving gathering in early 2020. This seedling of an idea became reality with the Weaving Stories and Culture – a practice in contemporary fibre art and fashion project. Supported by the NSW Government through Create NSW, Saltwater Freshwater worked

with 11 weavers from the Gumbaynggirr, Dunghutti, Biripi, Birpai and Worimi nations to develop fibre art fashion pieces. The finished pieces became part of the Saltwater Freshwater Arts 2021 touring exhibition with Aboriginal girls and women modelling the pieces at each of the opening nights of the exhibition. Connecting with deep wisdom and intent is a powerful one and these women had eight months to develop, create, collaborate and share their knowledge of the art. What was the beauty of coming together for communal weaving days, supporting one another along the way?

This project has been a powerful spiritual journey for these women and the experience has created a bond that they will carry throughout their lives. Due to COVID-19 restrictions the weavers initially met monthly via Zoom to stay connected and support each other. In December 2020 the weavers were able to meet in person at Yarrawarra Aboriginal Cultural Centre in Corindi north of Coffs Harbour. This provided an opportunity to connect, share skills and techniques, including the practice of eco-dyeing for the natural fibres often used by Aboriginal weavers. Continued over... COFFS COAST

There are diverse and refined skills from each weaver, and I take it these skills have been passed on through women and generations. How has this creative process connected you to your ancestors? Each design holds true to Country and directly connects the weavers to their ancestors. Being able to openly practice and share culture without punishment is powerful. The strength this group of women have gained from sharing with each other the practices from each country, the knowledge and the skills, has ignited a passion to ensure they all pass on these skills to the next generation and other women within their community. I love telling a story through my images and was often told by those following along that they felt like they were with me on the journey with me. Being a full time police detective, I also use my photography as a diversion from the hardships encountered with that work. i Hannah & Sarah. Congratulations on starting this much needed business. Tell us about yourselves, and your love of animals. Thank you! We are both so excited to be able to offer this here! Sarah - I’m a veteran of the pet industry, after 10 years in pet retail. I grew up surrounded by exotic animals at an oceanarium and my dad has trained and worked with animals for over 50 years – his passion certainly rubbed off. Helping animals is my calling, to help them live happier, healthier and more satisfying lives. For years I’ve seen dogs transformed with a little dietary advice, an enriching and stimulating toy, and encouraging owners to help their dogs thrive, not just survive. Discovering hydrotherapy and its benefits was a lightbulb moment. I knew I had to bring it to Coffs Harbour when I heard the stories of successful recoveries, or even just maintenance rather than deterioration. Hannah found that after one You are the only hydrotherapists from of her dogs had surgery, there were a lot of Newcastle to the Gold Coast. What was

the process of starting up the business? It was a long road but worth it to bring this innovative service to our region! The first thing was to get our certification – a year long process but we were constantly researching and planning our next steps. We bought our treadmill in January 2020 but spent nearly a year trying to find a home for it, as with the pandemic commercial rentals became hard to secure. We finally found a suitable place in December 2020 and after developing our practical skills we opened in March 2021! Pawsitive Canine Health offers hydrotherapy to furbabies who are recovering from surgery or just in need of exercise. Tell us some of the benefits this exercise has on our four legged friends. There are four main benefits. The first is the warm water – heated to about 31 degrees, it relaxes the dogs and warms the muscles so that they work better during the exercise. The next is buoyancy – reducing pressure of gravity on the joints which is fantastic for dogs recovering from surgery or with arthritis. Next up is water resistance – it’s harder to walk in water and this provides an excellent way to do short, targeted workouts that would take much longer on land. We can also make the workout harder for dogs who are here for fitness. The last benefit is hydrostatic pressure, the squeezing pressure you feel underwater. This puts evenly distributed gentle pressure over

Do pet owners need a referral? If the dog has a pre-existing injury, or is seeing us for rehabilitation then we do need a referral. This is so we can talk to their vet and access medical history, and so we won't exacerbate a condition we don’t know about. If a dog is just coming for fitness or weightloss, they don’t need a referral, and we will set goals and write a plan during our initial consultation. What is the equivalent of a short stint on the hydro treadmill? Five minutes on the underwater treadmill is equivalent to walking about five kilometres. We can make hard or easy by altering the water depth and belt speed. hen and how was Sawtell RSL founded? Sawtell RSL Club came from humble beginnings. A group of returned service personnel united to form a committee and conducted their first business and trading in little more than a shed in Elizabeth Street in Sawtell. These premises were owned by the Sub Branch and were later donated to the Girl Guides. It wasn’t until November 1957 that the club moved to its current location in First Avenue, Sawtell. With assistance from Woolgoolga RSL, local publican Frank Cleary and a Club from Gloucester, funds were raised to purchase two blocks of land in First Avenue, and the building commenced! Woolgoolga School Leaders Event I held the annual School Leaders event in Woolgoolga recently, with 100 school leaders and family attending. The guest speaker for the event was Duane March. Duane has worked in amazing locations around the country such as the Great Barrier Reef and Raine Island and currently works at the Pet Porpoise Pool in Coffs Harbour. Duane also established the Dolphin Marine Rescue, a not-for-profit charity devoted to the wellbeing of Australian

marine and terrestrial wildlife along the NSW coast through rescue, rehabilitation, release, conservation, education and research. Duane is a wonderful example of someone who followed his dreams and made them a reality. Student leaders play an important role in the life of their school community and it’s important to recognise them and thank them. I would like to thank the students, teachers, mums, dads, carers and grandparents who came along to the event.

i i Steel ARTIST

Olivia Steel is a young local artist doing some big things. Her work is both simple and intricate, beautiful line work that captures a human face or a floral arrangement in a way that is unique to her.

T

ell us about your art career and how you got started in the industry. I first started creating art back in 2017, with no intention of actually turning it into a business. I’m not sure what made me do it but one day I went to the store and bought a cheap canvas, some paints and just started painting. I remember the first thing I painted was a few organic shapes in a really cool green colour palette. I uploaded photos of each painting I did to social media and slowly started to gain followers and more people became interested in my work. When I first began painting I felt a huge sense of peace when I was doing it... like it was something I was just supposed to be doing. This feeling of peace and contentment really is what made me continue to create art. Where do you draw your inspiration from and how do you express that creatively? It’s taken me a while to really find my groove and my style but I know I’ve always been inspired by people and nature. My continuous line portraits are stripped back and ambiguous, which means there is no specific definition. I don’t intend to illustrate any certain gender, 56 COFFS COAST

race or religion... just what I see as human. I strongly believe we are all human before anything else. By creating these pieces with no literal definition, it allows the audience to connect with the work individually and interpret them in a way that is unique to them. Many people may even see something new each time they look at the piece. My most recent works feature both carefully considered floral arrangements and bold, abstract floral designs. Which all reflect the simple beauty within the natural world...highlighting my love for Australian nature. I find I am continually inspired by anyone and everything I see, from the beauty of the place we live to the wide range of individuals who live within it. How would you describe your art? My art is extremely paired back, abstract and intentional. I create mainly original artworks however, I have recently released a small print range! Each piece I create explores ideas of minimal beauty, with a strong focus on intricate and detailed line work. Everything about my work relates back to the strong bond between

nature and humanity – from the subtle colour palettes to the organic line work. I choose to use soft colours and organic lines as each work brings its own sense of calm and relief when being viewed. I think that’s important. You have created many great art works. What is your favourite piece to date and why? One of my favourite pieces to date is ‘My Spring Garden’. This original artwork was one of my first few floral pieces and I truly fell in love with it. Every time I look at it I feel proud, solidifying that sense of peace. ‘My Spring Garden’ was created in the middle of spring when everything is feeling alive and fresh. The piece features a floral bouquet in just one single line, hand painted with black acrylic on beautiful deckled edge paper... framed to perfection (thanks to Coffs Picture Framing!) Tell us about the creation process from start to finish. My studio days usually start with a fresh cup of tea, a candle burning, music playing and sketching new works. I find I always sketch

out each piece before drawing or painting it, which means an initial sketch then going back and forth to tweak certain parts – I am really intentional about every line. Hand painting the lines takes serious concentration, compared to just drawing them with a marker, as I did a few months ago. It’s a longer process but I feel a deeper sense of connection to the final product. Creating my portraits is almost like second nature for me – I very rarely plan these. The lines just flow onto the paper after what I've experienced throughout the day, rather than a conscious recollection of something I've seen. Inspiration often comes to me at the most random times... I find myself quickly scribbling ideas of composition and colour palettes into my phone for the next time I’m in the studio. The final pieces usually turn out way different to that first scribble, as it tends to form itself and go in a whole other direction – but it’s always good to have that starting point ready. What are some of your bigger projects you have been working on? I’m lucky enough to currently be working on a collaboration with I had the most yoga mat brand, Yogat. encouraging art Myself and 6 other teacher and I think Australian artists have she really helped me been selected for their fall in love with art. Stay tuned for more information and announcements throughout the year! It’s going to be amazing, I’m so lucky. What mediums do you prefer to create your artwork? I’ve found the best medium for my work is acrylic paint. It works really well with my organic style and abstract lines. A few months ago I was actually only using black acrylic or ink markers on paper/canvas, but recently I’ve been colour obsessed. I have been using a grey-blue mix and have come across this perfect shade of pink. I mix it each time, using a little bit of mustard, beige, pink and loads of

white... the perfect creamy pink, so pretty! What’s one of your earliest memories you have that discovered a love for art? I know I have always been a creative person, I grew up loving to draw and make things, but never actually thought art was something I could pursue until I was in my senior years at High School. I had the most encouraging art teacher and I think she really helped me fall in love with art. I was in Year 10 when I first started painting and then from Year 11, I began creating and selling works. Three years on, here I am, forever evolving and loving where I am. I'm so blessed to have found this passion. Where can we see more of work? You can find my artworks on my own website (oliviasteel.net), I’m always uploading new things on there. I also have a couple of stockists... you can find some works available at Jumbled Online (a homewares and fashion store based in Orange, NSW) and The Block Shop. I have done 2 small exhibitions over the years, so keep your eyes peeled for any more... I’m always scouting cool spaces, I definitely want to do more exhibitions locally! COFFS COAST

ethan DJ S A LT Y TRIPLE SSS E N T E R TA I N M E N T

Ethan , of Triple SSS Entertainment, began his DJing career at the tender age of 12, starting with kids parties and school discos. He is clearly passionate about music and believes that if you love something and can make a career out of it, you should go for it!

H

ey Ethan, You started your DJ career at a very young age, tell us where it all began? I began my DJ career at the age of 12 working for my dad’s business, Absolute Entertainment and Party Hire. I started DJing kids birthday parties and school discos with a really small mixer that had two pie-sized jog wheels, pause and play buttons and nothing else too fancy. Once I had been DJing for a year or two, I then decided to use the money I had saved up to buy disco lights, a smoke machine, microphones and bigger speakers. Skip forward 5 years and I have saved up more money which has allowed me to invest in a professional DJ mixer, robotic lights and 500 sets of silent disco headphones. Has music been something you have always been passionate about? Music has always been a passion of mine and I have tried producing my own songs using my DJ software and a launchpad. These experiences have taught me that producing original content is a special art, allowing me to appreciate those who do produce their own music. From the silent discos you have held so far what has the response been? I have held 5 silent discos so far, two events at the Port Macquarie pools, twice down at the Jetty for the street eats events and St John Paul Day at my school. As silent discos are a new way to be entertained, not many people are aware of how the concept works. It is only until they give it a try that they start to realise how cool the functionality of the silent disco really is. So far there has been an overwhelming positive response and the fact that there is no loud music means that there are no noise complaints from members of the public. BY RO N B A E B LU E S “It is a truth universally acknowledged that an influencer in possession of a good follower count must be in want of a beach backdrop (for the ’gram). And there’s no better backdrop – or magnet for influencers – than Byron Bay, the perfect setting for our next Australian Netflix Original.” – Netflix (with apologies to Jane Austen).

T

he community in Byron Bay has come out strongly against a proposed Netflix TV Series, “Byron Baes”, which aims to expose the influencer culture

that has taken over the town. An online petition of nearly 9,000 signatures asks all levels of government to refuse to grant filming permits. A large and committed group of surfers paddled out and created a circle with a line through it to protest the show. But I nearly fell off my chair when #byronbay and beautifully manicured and artfully edited pictures of the surfers’ protest started filling my Instagram feed (@gurmesh. singh.mp). Do they fail to see the irony? Or is this an elaborate marketing ploy by the producers? I couldn’t tell you which is more likely. Byron Bay locals have said the show will be

60 COFFS COAST

focus

“embarrassing” and “void of authenticity”. But many feel Byron Bay lost its authenticity long ago when the Range Rovers started outnumbering the Kombi’s. The Byron Bay many of us knew from our youth is long gone. The issues facing the town are still apparent, but there has been little done to resolve them. Housing availability and affordability is an issue that has arisen post-COVID in a lot of coastal towns, but has been a problem in Byron for at least a decade. Traffic is also a major issue that seems to get worse every year. Byron Bay has been a victim of its own success. The Byron brand evolved around an easy going and laid back beach lifestyle and traded on the various subcultures that actually made the place cool in the first place. Then we saw businesses from far and wide (and well outside Byron) use the brand name Byron Bay to leverage that image further. It

grew in popularity and people wanted to be there – to live and to play. What can other towns learn from the Byron Bay experience? Between 2001 and 2016, the population of the Byron Shire LGA has grown by only 9%. By comparison, the Coffs Harbour LGA has grown by 19% in the same period. One of the big lessons to come out of the Byron experiment is that you can’t simply attract more and more people to a finite area without adequate planning for those people. Sensible planning allows for affordable housing, suitable transport, and all of the social amenity that people desire in a coastal region. Coffs is planning for more housing, better road infrastructure, new health facilities, and future growth. Not many in Coffs Harbour want to see us change into the Gold Coast. But we don’t want to end up like Byron Bay either.

I feel good knowing I have done my family, friends and coach proud! I enjoy pushing myself and improving my skills and beating my PB’s. What goals are you working towards or currently focusing on for the near future? I’d like to further improve and make it to Nationals next year when my age group can compete. I’m Ashlea Bates, 30 year old mum of 4 who are all just as crazy about dirt bikes as I am. I’m a passionate motorcycle coach, racer and volunteer right here at the Coffs Harbour motorcycle club. Take us back to where the love of dirt tracks started for you? My love for the track actually started when I was 2 and half years old, in a totally different discipline of bike riding. I started racing BMX at the local track here in Sawtell and I’ve been chasing that adrenaline rush of lining up behind a gate ever since. I travelled around racing BMX, competing in club and state events, and I really enjoyed it which left me with a lot of great memories from my childhood growing up at the BMX track including sitting on “Woody’s wall” winning yogo at the finish lines at major events and making some lifelong friends. FITNESS

UPDATE with JEN McCULLOCH

F R O M C O F F S C O A S T H E A LT H C L U B

SCOTTAND JEYNELLE

FORREST

This Month’s Inspirational Health & Fitness Story comes to us courtesy of Scott & Jeynelle Forrest who show us that teamwork is the key to success. January this year kicked off with the ‘8 Week Weight

Loss Challenge’ run by Personal Trainer & Nutritional Coach, Jen McCulloch.

T

ell us Jen, what was the 8 Week Weight Loss Challenge? The 8-week challenge was not about a quick fix or a fad diet. It was about helping people with good habits that they can utilise throughout the year and the upcoming years to keep control of your weight, health and fitness. One of the biggest things I see every week is people falling for clever marketing with the promise of a quick fix. I made it clear from the start, although the challenge only ran over 8 weeks, it was about realistic, healthy weight loss. There were no meal replacement shakes, no meal plans or shopping lists, only the ones they created for themselves. Challengers were introduced to a flexible way of losing weight, where they still got to enjoy the foods they love. The 8 weeks was about education and creating healthy habits to take forward. Participants were encouraged to share their journey through an online community to provide daily support and accountability. Now let us hear from our Weight Loss Power Couple, Scott & Jeynelle Forrest… From other weight loss you had tried, what did ‘The 8 Week Challenge’ offer that was different? For Scott, his previous weight loss was self-driven. His results from the challenge were attributed to accountability to Jen with weekly face to face check-ins, education around exercise, calories and nutrition including

68 COFFS COAST

the support and healthy competitiveness of the Facebook group. Jeynelle had previously undertaken weight loss challenges, but the difference with Jen’s 8 Week Challenge was the support of the Facebook group and having Scott involved. What changes did you make in your lifestyle as a result of ‘The 8 Week Weight Loss Challenge’? While Jeynelle already had a regular training program with Jen, we made more of an effort to walk or do home workouts in the evening. Before the challenge, we would sit and watch TV and more than likely indulge in unhealthy snacks and alcohol. Scott became more conscious of the nutritional values of foods and that a high protein diet can help curb the snack cravings. We ate more fruit and reduced our alcohol to weekends only. For Scott, he reduced the easy takeaway lunch options and replaced most days with a high protein lunch or shake. Our shopping and eating habits have changed for the better. Do you find the support from your Personal Trainer (Jen) helps you achieve your goals? Jen’s helpful hints and realistic approach helped us to achieve the goals. It was celebrating the successes – no matter how small – and not feeling guilty for occasional indulgences. Her sense of humour and willingness to share her own stories (successes and failures) kept things real. What goals have you both set yourselves for the future?

Both of us have further weight loss we want to achieve and then be able to maintain a healthy weight. We are looking to increase our running fitness and complete a half marathon in the next 12 months. Do you both feel as though you have come a long way with your diet and fitness? For Scott his fitness and diet have come a long way – he has more of an understanding of the importance of a healthy diet, being aware of hidden calories balanced out by cardio and strength activities, which he never did before the challenge. Jeynelle’s cardio fitness is improving with increased walking and running activities. With both of us on the same level of understanding of hidden calories, the ’treats’ such as ice cream, chocolate, wine, cocktails and cheese platters are an occasional treat and reward rather than the normal weekend intake. What is the most useful advice you could share with other readers? Having a support network, be it a group or a partner, family member or friend, has had a huge impact on our results. We kept each other honest and on track. Using a calorie tracker and fitness watch is an additional motivator. Stick at it! Thanks for sharing Scott & Jeynelle. If you are looking to kickstart your own inspirational fitness story with Jen, call her directly on 0431 141 701 or send her an email at jen@ jenloufitness.com to get started today. Exercise, An Essential Ingredient in Beating Cancer! with AARON HARDAKER

A

cancer diagnosis can be a traumatic experience, and often the first thought after diagnosis is how to access the best possible treatment. Research has shown that exercising during cancer treatment has a significant beneficial impact and can increase the effectiveness of the treatment, reduce recurrence rates and increase longevity postcancer. To ensure cancer patients on the Coffs Coast are getting the best possible outcomes, Mid North Coast Physio have partnered with the Mid North Coast Cancer Institute in recent years to develop CAN-Ex, a group exercise program for cancer patients and their carers. Exercise Physiologist caught up with CAN-Ex participants Kathy Coombs and Ian Jewell to discuss their involvement. What benefits did you experience from doing CAN-Ex? Ian: The benefits of participating in the CAN-Ex program I found to be both physical and mental. Interacting with other people in the same boat makes you realise you’re not alone. Maintaining a positive attitude is vital when dealing with cancer in the short and long term. The program also

allowed me to experience using equipment in a gym for the first time, something I have found to be an interesting and informative experience. Kathy: It was so good to have people who understood what I was going through and what I needed. It also gave me contact with others who were doing the program and we could talk about things that were common to everyone. CAN-Ex was good exercise and gave me more confidence with balance, flexibility and coordination. How has your lifestyle changed to include exercise during and after cancer? Ian: It very easy to do absolutely nothing when you constantly feel tired and exhausted (the unwelcomed effects of treatment). Attending CAN-Ex regularly has the effect of training the mind and body to embrace each day with a “Can Do” feel or attitude. I use this discipline to face the challenge of maintaining a healthy active lifestyle. Kathy: Exercise has been essential for my ability to cope with the treatment and my recovery. I am sure there is a direct relationship between exercise and what I was able to do and my feeling of well-being after the treatment. I can do so much now. This includes playing golf,

walking, gardening and other things that I enjoy with the people around me. What would you recommend to others with cancer considering CAN-Ex? Ian: CAN-Ex has played an important role during my treatment and recovery process. It is designed and delivered by professional staff for whom I have a high regard. The program is adjusted to suit participants’ individual needs on any given day. I would strongly urge everyone dealing with cancer to give it a go. There is nothing to lose but everything to gain. Kathy: This is a wonderful program with caring and knowledgeable people to help. The sessions are structured in a way that will assist with the day-to-day physical demands on the body. I now have an exercise routine that is specifically designed for my situation. It was given to me by my Exercise Physiologist and I am still doing it 2-3 times per week after the sessions finished. I am very pleased to have done the program. It was a very small cost for a wonderfully beneficial outcome. Just do it! Thanks Ian and Kathy. For more information on CAN-Ex call the friendly team at Mid North Coast Physio on 1300 273 747.

and attending regular oral health check ups and cleans. Children’s Dental Care At Welcome Dental we have both a Dental Therapist and an Oral Health Therapist who offer evening and Saturday appointments to cater for out of school hours. The Children’s Dental Benefits Program is bulk billed at the surgery and you can find out if you are eligible through Medicare or contacting your dental surgery and asking them to check if your child is eligible. If your child is eligible you are able to access up to $1,013 for their general dental care over 2 calendar years. Orthodontic Treatments Orthodontic Treatments are sometimes needed for children if they have crooked teeth, gappy teeth, an underbite or overbite, buck teeth or crowded teeth. Removable plates, braces or other fixed appliances or clear aligners might be needed to apply pressure to the teeth and move them appropriately.

For children 6 monthly check-ups are especially important for children from the time they lose their first baby tooth. The dentist will ensure that their teeth are coming through symmetrically and in correct sequence. Some orthodontic problems can be avoided completely with early detection and timely management. Detecting any problems early also allows for financial planning for later treatment. Anxious Patients We understand that many people are anxious or phobic about dental treatment and have clinicians who are very experienced in treating people with these. Just let our reception staff know and they can book you appropriately. We can offer Nitrous Oxide (happy gas) or Penthrox (green whistle) sedation if necessary. Many of our patients who have started out requiring such sedation get to a point where they are relaxed enough to no longer need them. In these cases it is especially important to take the time – often with multiple small simple visits, until the child is happy with basic preventive treatments. That way issues can be addressed, often before they become problematic and if an emergency does arise the child can actually be treated. Payment Plans and Surgery Hours We understand that dental care can be costly, especially when it is not planned for. hat made you interested in becoming an Oral Health Therapist? For as long as I can remember I have always had an interest in teeth. I come from a large family and actually recall asking to check my sisters’ teeth from an early age. My parents never had a problem getting me to brush my teeth! I completed work experience in the dental field, and once graduating high school worked in the industry. I knew I wanted to become a practitioner so worked towards that early on in my career. What do you love about your job? The people I meet. Each day is different. I particularly love working with children, they bring me so much joy. There is never a story that I have heard before. I truly love the interaction with my patients. There is nothing more rewarding than a child skipping down the hallway for their routine dental visit. I also love the working dynamics within the team. It’s very rewarding having a close relationship with my colleagues and working together to optimise patients’ Oral Health for their long-term overall health benefits.

We’ll turn that frown upside down.

What is your best dental tip? To focus on prevention! It is the key to reducing dental problems. I encourage regular routine visits twice a year; if we have changes within the oral cavity, we can address the concern before it becomes problematic. We all know the importance of brushing two times daily for two minutes but can slacken off with cleaning between our teeth. A toothbrush simply does not clean the plaque between our teeth, we need to use floss or use interdental brushes prior to brushing once a day. Minerals can be found in your toothpaste, and they’re there for good reason. Calcium and phosphorous (in the form of phosphate), along with fluoride, are included in toothpaste because they play a key role in keeping your teeth healthy and strong. Drink plenty of fluoridated tap water after meals as it helps flush out left over food particles from the mouth and helps strengthen your teeth. What do you love to do outside of work? I thoroughly enjoy being in the garden with my chooks. I find it so rewarding getting produce and being able to grow your own food. I love spending time with family and friends over a home grown, home cooked meal. I also love spending time at the river, swimming, stand-up paddle-boarding and snorkelling. We have a rule between our friends to meet at high tide so it’s a lovely social outing for our family.

OHANA EARLY LEARNING HAS APPOINTED A NEW GENERAL MANAGER, JEN MORISON. WE CAUGHT UP WITH JEN TO FIND OUT MORE...

ello Jen, what brings you to the Coffs Coast? I’ve just moved here to take up the position with Ohana Early Learning as their new General Manager. I saw the role as an extension of what I'd achieved in my career down in Melbourne. It all sort of came together really nicely both personally and professionally as we were looking for a lifestyle change. So, what have you done so far to find your feet? We’ve been very much the tourists for the past few weeks, taking in all of the major attractions. We went back to South West Rocks, where I used to holiday as a child, and to Urunga where I had really fond memories of the Honey Place, so the kids and I tasted all the honeys and bought up big! Our aim now is to get out to Bellingen and Dorrigo and explore around the area, otherwise it’s been very much beaches, beaches and more beaches, given that we don't get to do that too often down in Victoria. Could you tell us a bit about your background in Melbourne? I grew up in Western Sydney, which is where I studied for my Bachelor of Teaching in Early Childhood. I then started as a Room Leader across all age groups. It was a natural transition into management and leadership a few years later. After meeting my husband, we moved to Melbourne, which is where he’s from, to settle down and raise our family. Here I worked as a consultant and helped numerous private day care centres grow their business. I was honing my leadership, coaching and mentoring skills at this time. My passion in early childhood is around pedagogy and practice! A curriculum reflective of children’s interest and needs helps to ensure we achieve positive educational and social outcomes for families and children alike. Working in local government, I found my

HOW TO LEARN IN A DIGITAL WORLD

W

e all know it: the world of our childhood and the world that our children are growing up in is different. Access to technology is obviously one of the most notable differences – not simply in our children’s (and our own) lives, but also in the way that they process information, at home and at school. But are these changes good, bad or just plain ugly? A recent report commissioned by the Gonski Institute for Education, entitled ‘Growing Up Digital Australia’, suggests all three. The report surveyed 1876 Australian educators on their observations and concerns regarding the changes that technology is leveraging. Using the 1967 Clint Eastwood spaghetti western “The Good, The Bad and The Ugly” as the structure for this article, here’s the facts on how Australian educators believe that digital devices have impacted our children’s education, psyche and behaviour. The Bad: According the report, teachers have seen some big shifts in the way students behave, interact and learn: • 84% of teachers believe that digital technologies are a growing distraction in the learning environment. • 66% of teachers note that children are arriving at school tired due to an increase in online activities, and that they are too tired to complete homework. • 60% of teachers state that there is also a decrease in student physical activity. • More than 90% of teachers noted

JASON BURLEY

FROM BURLEY AGED CARE ADVICE

RETIREMENT VILLAGE OR AGED CARE? Where we live in our older years is not just a decision about physical location but how we can access care and support.

A

ccommodation versus care When care is needed, many people compare the option of a retirement village against residential aged care. While both provide supportive environments for older people, they are not complete substitutes. The funding and care implications are quite different. Don’t view the comparison as just a property transaction based on price and size. For example, in a retirement village you may have access to a whole unit or villa, while for a similar price in a residential aged care service, you have only a single room. You should also think about how much support you need each day. Retirement villages versus residential care Retirement villages offer the opportunity to live in a community of older people. The village operator will maintain the external building and community garden

areas, but it is still independent living. You may be able to access support inside your home but services vary, and unless provided through a Home Care package, costs are not subsidised by the Government. Residential aged care bundles fully supported living and care together with accommodation. This care is provided 24/7 and the costs are heavily subsidised by the Government. The value of advice Everyone’s circumstances are different, so it’s important to speak with a licensed financial adviser before making any decisions. I am a licensed financial adviser, aged care specialist, and authorised representative of Count Financial Limited AFSL 227232 Giving yourself time by starting your research early can reduce stress levels and, for an older person, can ensure their voice is heard more clearly. certain questions about the purpose of superannuation. Due to the substantial size of deposits required to access the property market, it has been suggested that early release of superannuation should be used to assist with home buying. This could have the dual benefit of helping the economy and, despite reducing savings for retirement, allow people to invest in a home which could improve their retirement prospects. These suggestions are not widely accepted and yet they have raised the questions about the purpose of superannuation and members’ relationship with it. In a time of financial hardship for many, the prospect of receiving money in the present from their superannuation can be more appealing than continuing to save for retirement. In summary Despite the size and strength of the superannuation industry, challenges exist including frustrations around policy reform and wider issues such as the ageing population. Superannuation was initially established to reduce the economy’s vulnerability to external shocks, the industry has broadly been able to react positively to recent turmoil. However, as the government tried to balance supporting individuals in hardship with actions such as the early access regime, the industry is required to be increasingly adaptable. These short-term changes have proved challenging where they conflict with long-term strategies.

Marian Grove is more than a retirement village, it’s a local identity. Operated by not-for-profit Sawtell Catholic Care, for over twenty-seven years this vibrant Village has grown and flourished, evolving as the needs of the community changes. We spoke to Michelle Oxley, SCC Relationship Manager about the latest addition to Marian Grove’s accommodation options, their New Release Apartments.

’ve never been so busy with enquiries as these last few months,” Michelle says. “Probably because now is such an incredible time to sell and downsize. With the real estate market this buoyant, people are realising they can sell their bigger, high maintenance property, transition into our village whether in a villa, townhouse or one of our brand new apartments and have plenty of money left to enjoy the retirement lifestyle of their dreams.” “The great thing about Marian Grove is that we’re here and ready to move into now. You don’t have to wait, buy off a plan or leave the area – simply come in to us, choose from a number of different possibilities and when you fall in love with your new home, there it is, ready and waiting for you. We do have such a variety of different homes, there’s absolutely something to suit every taste and budget.” “I’m finding, with this current real estate boom, many are actually bringing forward their plans to move into a Retirement Village, as there’s literally never been a better time to sell. RENTAL UPDATE

with CHRISTINE RENGGER FROM TMP RENTALS

RENT STABILISING Good news for people looking for a rental property: after some time of the rental market finding its “level” the market appears to be stabilising.

W

hat does this mean? Well right now, the rent per week figure seems to be staying level instead of increasing rapidly. Whilst we agree good returns are paramount for investors, tenants also need to rely on some equilibrium to secure properties at reasonable rates. The Coffs Coast has experienced an increase in prices in a very short space of time thanks to COVID-19, the sudden and necessary move to remote working and people from the cities moving to our beautiful Coffs Coast to enjoy our relaxed lifestyle. If you’re a tenant, it can be frustrating applying time and time again for properties. But there are some things you can do to ensure your application stands out from the rest. We’ve collated some top tips for tenants to consider when submitting their application:

114 COFFS COAST

focus

1. Make sure your application is completed in full. Don’t leave any blanks, even if it says Nil or Not Applicable in the section you can’t complete. 2. Make sure you attach all the documents the agent asks for, to your application. 3. Make sure you have advised your current agent that you are applying for rentals, so they know to expect reference requests. 4. Present yourself appropriately at inspections and be on time. 5. Don’t let the number of people viewing the property stop you from putting in an

application... you never know if you don’t try. 6. If your application is declined, don’t stress, try again and submit for another suitable property. This is just par for the course when there are so many tenants in the market. If you need assistance and feel we can help, pop down to the Jetty and look for the “Green Door”. We will be happy to assist. Have a great month.

ike most Australians, my family and I have looked on in disbelief at times, at devastation that unfolds on our television screens in this sunburnt country. I am not an insurance broker, nor do I claim to be, however with the recent floods, fires and cyclones that test our nation, it’s probably time to call your insurance agent or broker for a chat. Insurance companies agree that the most common reason for home owners being caught short when disaster strikes is not that they have no insurance at all but that what they have is inadequate. Under insurance is an insidious thing; once people take out home and contents insurance they tend to think they’re covered. They file their policy away and don’t look at it from one year to the next. It’s a bit like thinking you’re healthy and not bothering to have regular medical check ups. Contents insurance particularly should be updated once a year, especially if the home owner has made significant purchases. This way if you fall victim to fire, theft, storm or other disaster you won’t find that you’ve just spent thousands on a new lounge suite or the latest in computer technology only to realise that your contents cover hasn’t kept pace with your rate of acquisition.
