FRIDAY BREAKOUT SESSIONS 10:15 AM - 12:15 PM | 2 Clock Hours SALONS A, B, & C Topic: Cultural Competence Clinical Intervention Presenter: Charles Frazier, DSW, LCSW, MBA Description: America’s expanding cultural diversity increases the likelihood that clinicians will encounter clients who represent cultures that differ from their own. Because culture can impact how one manages life stressors, clinical interventions require counselors to be savvy, innovative, and apply cultural competence. Cultural Competency Therapeutic Intervention (CCTI) means the counselor can interact effectively with clients from diverse backgrounds and meet their needs by using a framework that includes self-awareness, expansion of cultural knowledge, and adaptation. Culturally competent practitioners are flexible, open, and empathic; all to foster a safe, therapeutic environment that demonstrates acceptance and cultural responsiveness. Because culture means more than simply one’s race, gender, and ethnicity, cultural competence encompasses an individual’s full personal identity: how one identifies in areas like sexual orientation, political and religious leanings, economic status, etc. EVERYTHING that colors the lens through which individuals view the world and their own relationship with the world. Cultural competency, therefore, means acknowledgement and allowance for all differences. Gaining cultural competence is a life-long journey. Due to the fact of underrepresentation within the field of clinical counselors, it is imperative that counselors demonstrate cultural awareness and curiosity in validating the clients’ experiences. This cutting-edge training will provide clinicians with a framework to establish a therapeutic alliance centered in trustbuilding as a critical component of the clinical process. Course Goals & Objectives: Explore the relationship between cultural awareness and clinical intervention Evaluate one’s own cultural awareness Learn an inter-cultural competency framework to increase intervention effectiveness across diverse populations Develop a culturally competent Accountability Plan

Explore societal and historical inequities in America which impact intervention effectiveness Integrate cultural competency as part of the clinical process SALON D Topic: "They Won't Leave Me Alone": An Examination of the Link Between Domestic Violence and Stalking Presenter: Victoria Siegel, MS, LMHC, LCPC, LPC Description: This introductory presentation looks at the connection and overlap that exist between domestic violence and stalking including definitions, various forms of abuse and risk factors that make a person more vulnerable. Course Goals & Objectives: Define domestic violence and stalking and summarize impact on society Identify behavioral patterns between dv and stalking and the various trauma responses for survivors Establish safety planning and effective treatment options SALON E Topic: Cultivating Resilience in Clinical Supervision: Integrating Self-Care Practices to Protect Counselor Well-Being Presenter: Bridget Glass, Ph.D., LMHC, ACS Description: Supervision is an integral force in the development of professional identity in beginning counselors. While supervisees often learn to navigate the challenges associated with client care, less attention is typically focused on mitigating the risk of burnout, compassion fatigue, and vicarious trauma and the improvement of long-term emotional well-being. This session will help supervisors identify warning signs of supervisee occupational distress, determine an action plan for educating supervisees on the importance of caring for their mental health, and will be provided strategies to instill wellness practices within the framework of supervision. 24

The model utilizes 10 stages in an effort to confront cognitive distortions along with affect dysregulation in an attempt to integrate parts of self that were dissociated or detached due to Early Childhood Sexual Trauma, Human Trafficking, Domestic Violence, or Sexual Assault. This workshop will offer a spirituallybased Model as a lens to the heart of the soul to challenge the very essence of identity and personality with a well-thought-out approach to balanced intervention that avoids theology, polity, and denominationalism and works to integrate isolated and core parts of self through self and spiritual forgiveness along with a spiritual awakening rooted in self history and/or interest.

3:00 PM - 6:00 PM | 3 Clock Hours SALONS A, B, & C Topic: An Ethical Approach for Overcoming Trauma and Insecure Attachment Responses Presenters: Lisa Compton, Ph.D., LCSW, CTTS, CFE and Anita Kuhnley, Ph.D., LPC Description: Traumatic injuries are common with clients and cause social anxiety, interpersonal avoidance, and chronic depression (Knight & Sibcy, 2017). However, our research and neuroscience literature demonstrates that clients can navigate the pathway from fear to connection. This workshop will explore common autonomic nervous system responses to perceived threats. Essential strategies that competent clinicians can use to recalibrate overactive defenses will be revealed. In addition, ethical considerations for working with clients with attachment injuries and trauma wounds will be discussed. This workshop will include a toolkit to facilitate client safety and stabilization and move clients from reactive to intentional behaviors (Clabough, 2019; Krupnik, 2019; Siegel, 2015). Particular attention will focus on correcting distortions both cognitive and spiritual and the 'affect storm' that often follows survivors of sexual trauma. Dealing with the victim of then (part of self )confronting the adult now (part of self) a la traditional Gestalt 'chair-work' 25

SALON G & H Topic: EMDR Protocols and Disaster Trauma: Hope for the Disillusionment Dilemma 31

Participants will be able to explain and recommend EMDR treatments for disaster trauma and distress

Presenters: Sherry Todd, Ph.D., LPC, ATR-BC, CTTS, Lisa White-head, LPC, LMFT, LCDC, RPT, and Jessica R. Stewart, LPC, NCC, CCTP Description: Just a simple glance at the national news can be distressing, if not triggering. Mass shootings, school shootings, and violent events in general have reached startling numbers. The suicide rates, across all ages and groups have increased. Political and social discord abounds. Not to mention the weather: tornados, flooding, wildfires, and ocean temperatures equivalent to that of a hot tub. As the catastrophes continue, our strength and capacity to cope is diminishing. The ‘window of tolerance’ appears to be shrinking, with many of us experiencing hypo and/or hyperarousal. Contributing to a significantly reduced ability to problem solve. The COVID pandemic was a disaster with global effects unimaginable in 2019. There are specific phases of a disaster, each with its own features. One of the phases is the disillusionment phase. During this presentation, the phases of disaster will be reviewed and the nuances of the COVID pandemic (disaster) explored. The psychological and social problems associated with the disillusionment phase of a disaster will be discussed and compared to the current distress being experienced nationally and globally. EMDR is a well-known treatment for traumatic experience. Even Prince Harry has been caught butterfly tapping. Less is known about the use of EMDR in disaster work. A brief history of EMDR, the Adaptive Information Processing theory, the components (Shapiro, 2018) of EMDR, and its use in disasters (Luber, 2015) will be explored. Studies have shown EMDR is beneficial to the disaster survivors, as well as the responders (Luber, 2015). Several studies will be introduced to validate the benefits of EMDR as a disaster response intervention. Variations of standard EMDR will be discussed and the benefits of each explored in relation to the disillusionment phase of disaster. Participants will be invited to participate in a self-care EMDR protocol and various self-care techniques throughout the presentation. Course Goals & Objectives: Participants will be able to define the phases of disaster in terms of mental health, with a specific focus on the disillusionment phase Participants will be able to evaluate current events and emotional distress resulting from disaster trauma

Screen-sharing can be used to expose clients to visual and auditory stimuli that activates the brain differently than traditional psychotherapy, tapping into thoughts, emotions, memories, and physical sensations that sometimes not easily accessed in the therapy room. Through screensharing, counselors can use video clips, music, artwork, internet searches, “street view” maps, and a variety of other media to augment talk therapy.
