Our SOLO group has gotten together before the regular monthly membership meeting for a long time. This has worked out very well in keeping people informed and involved in the program. Chris DeMinco made his first attempt at bringing racers together before our February 3rd meeting. Quite a few people came. The 2015 season was the topic of discussion. Chris made people aware of the reduced schedule we are facing because of Watkins Glen paving and problems at Nelsons Ledges. He was looking for input relative to what people are interested in and looked for volunteers to be part of the Race Competition board. He also presented the cost of putting on an event at the tracks we have dealt with. Chris has been looking into tracks to replace Nelsons Ledges as a race venue. This is a more complicated issue than 4
just getting on a tracks schedule. We are part of NEDIV. Schedules are worked out in November to resolve track usage and any conflicts. Finances are also an issue with increasing track rental and sanctioning costs. Race participation has diminished in recent years. Regions have gotten out of racing. We as a Region must look at the bigger picture of not only our own program but what will keep racing alive in the Northeast. Getting back to Chris, he suggested getting together every other month. I would suggest getting the smaller working meeting for Race board members on odd months and larger meetings on the even months open to all racers and workers. We are a volunteer organization. People must be involved for us to be successful. The racing demographic is changing. More participants are using arrive and drive services. The general population is getting older. Fewer people are getting novice permits. Time commitment and cost are key issues. Discussion at the meeting suggested looking at mid- week and single day events. Chris attempted to send emails to our members with competition licenses via the list we get from the SCCA national office. Many people did not get a chance to participate in his meeting as they did not get the email. The lists we get are at best 60% accurate. People do not keep their info up to date or do not provide an email address. Email addresses and phone numbers are outdated. Please log into your account at SCCA.com and update your information. Updates to technical issues are sent to the email you have listed. Last months’ Top End contained a copy of the regions’ revised by laws. Please review them. A vote will be taken at the March meeting to accept the revisions. Until next month, Charlie
Meeting Minutes Finger Lakes Region, SCCA General Membership Meeting Minutes
February 3, 2015 Location: Fireside Grill & Sports Bar, 3939 E Henrietta Rd Henrietta, NY 14467 Regional Executive Charlie Tanck called the meeting to order at 8:03 p.m. DEVELOPMENT • The bylaws have been placed in Top End and we will be voting on them at the March meeting. ACTIVITIES • The banquet happened, NYSRC gave awards as well. • We are planning social activities throughout the year to celebrate our 60th anniversary. • We would like to do a joint event with CNY/Glen Region. • We will add a "Social" page to the website. • People can volunteer to help with the auto show. TREASURER • All bills paid. • Banquet money needs to be deposited. • Glen Majors race deposit paid. MEMBERSHIP • 437 total members - added Sandra and William Barkley for a gain of two. • 26 people attended tonight's general membership meeting. RALLY • 22 teams emtered the January 10th rally, 20 finished. • Ithaca Rally had 20 entries. • Numbers are up for the year! • We have 14 registered for the Waste Management Winter Rally. SOLO • We have identified sponsors and

plan to hold joint events with other car clubs. • We have a Novice School and Street Survival school planned. • We need a volunteer to drive the truck to events. RACE • Nelson Ledges is still questionable, we can't reach the owner. • A budget is being prepared for the 4th of July weekend Glen Majors race. • We're exploring all available options for 2016. Others Present: Meridith Croucher, STPR Board; Carl Dresie, Top End Editor Charlie called the meeting to order at 7:30 p.m. These minutes are arranged by subject and are not in chronological order. Note that not all of multiple conversations were captured. An audio tape of the meeting is available from cfdresie@cs.com upon request. ACTIVITIES • Banquet reservations are approaching 50. • A committee is meeting to work on planning social events for the year. A request for ideas will be prepared for Top End. • Business cards and a generic Top End are requested for the auto show. • The July 7 general meetings will be a picnic at Durand Eastman Park. DEVELOPMENT • Ben, Brian and Elizabeth will review and update the Financial Policy. Meetings will be at 7 before the board meetings. • A TV with DVD will be purchased, primarily for the car show and social events. RACE • The Nelson Ledges track availability for Westward Ho! needs to be finalized by Feb. 20. No optional venues are available. • The Syracuse track may be available in 2016. Chris and Charlie will meet with track management in March. • A budget for the WGI Majors race is being prepared for the March board meeting. • Central New York Region has started ice racing. RALLY/RALLYCROSS • The steps required to get a usage variance for Perry’s Park are defined. A dust mitigation plan and safety plan are being written. Other sites are being investigated. Possible OOR event with Syracuse. • Two Winter Series Rallies have been run, with good attendance.
SOLO • The 2015 board and chief positions have been named. • A schedule (with conflicts) has been printed in Top End. STPR® • Meridith gave an annual review of Susquehannock Trail Performance Rally®, LLC. • Waste Management Winter Rally and STPR will be sanctioned by Rally America. • A ten year contract will be signed with DCNR of PA. • Sanctioning body options were reviewed. • X-Games, under Global Rally Cross, are a conflict with STPR; we will lose top rank competitors. • WMWR has fourteen entries as of now. • Meridith is on the board of the United States Rally Association. TOP END • The use of digital copies will be pushed again for all members and especially Canadian members. TREASURER • Balance Sheet and Profit and Loss statements were distributed for review. The December investment report is available for review. • All bills except SCCA shipping are paid. • Funds have been transferred to savings. • Applications have been made for a line of credit and a credit card. This should prevent unexpected savings withdrawals. • Deposits may have been missassigned to the Fun One. The deposits need to be reviewed. Corrected information is needed for budgeting purposes. BYLAWS OF THE FINGER LAKES REGION, SPORTS CAR CLUB OF AMERICA, INC.
WHEREAS the FINGER LAKES REGION SPORTS CAR CLUB OF AMERICA, INC. (“Club”) approved bylaws on July 9, 1981, with revisions on October 3, 1988, November 6, 1991 and November 7, 2009; and WHEREAS the Club desires to amend and restate the bylaws; .......... NOW, THEREFORE, the Club amends and wholly restates the bylaws to read as follows: I. NAME AND PURPOSE A. The name of the Club shall be the FINGER LAKES REGION SPORTS CAR CLUB OF AMERICA, INC. B. The purpose of the Club shall be to promote the welfare of the community through as follows: the promotion of local and national amateur sports competitions and exhibitions; participation in and conduct of competition events; the promotion of ownership, operation and preservation of sports cars; holding driver education events; cooperation with similar clubs and groups. C. The corporate seal shall be circular in form, being inscribed with the name of the Club, the year of its incorporation and the word “New York.” The Secretary, with the approval of the President or Treasurer, may change the form of the seal at any time. II. MEMBERSHIP AND DUES A. The original members of the Club constituted all members in good standing of the Western New York Region Sports Car Club of America, Inc. residing in the State of New York, Counties of Allegheny, Genesee, Livingston, Monroe, Ontario, Orleans,
Seneca, Steuben, Wayne, and Wyoming. B. Current membership in the Club shall be restricted to members of the Sports Car Club of America, Inc. (“SCCA”) who designate the Finger Lakes Region as their local region. C. Annual regional dues shall be set by the Board of Directors. If no change in the amount of dues is made by the December board meeting preceding the year end, then dues shall remain as they were for year ending. D. Termination of Membership: 1. Regional membership will automatically lapse for nonpayment of dues if national membership in the SCCA has lapsed for non-payment of dues. Regional membership will also lapse for nonpayment of regional dues at the end of 90 days after being billed. 2. Any member may be suspended until the next annual meeting for infraction of the Club rules by vote of a majority of the Board of Directors of the Club or for other cause if a majority of the Board of Directors deems the suspension to be in the best interest of the Club. Upon suspension, the member will be informed in writing and will be given a reasonable opportunity to be heard regarding the suspension. 3. Any suspended member may be presented at the next annual meeting for expulsion and shall be expelled if a majority of the members present and voting shall vote to expel the member. The vote shall be by secret ballot. 4. Any member may resign by written letter to the Secretary. The resignation shall be effective upon receipt, provided all debts to the club have been paid. III. MEETING OF THE MEMBERS A. Regular meetings of the membership shall be held monthly, or as otherwise scheduled by the Board of Directors. Meetings shall include reports of officers and committees and other

such business as may come before the meeting. B. The annual meeting of the members shall be held at the regular meeting in December of each year for election of directors and officers. C. Special meetings of the members may be called by the Regional Executive, or by a majority of the Board of Directors. D. A written or printed notice stating the place, day, hour and purpose of the annual meeting of the members and special meetings shall be given by the Secretary at least 10 days before these meetings. Notice shall be sent to each member by mail or email to the address appearing on the records of the Club. E. A quorum shall consist of the members present at regular, special, or annual meetings. F. All actions not otherwise specifically detailed in these bylaws shall be by majority vote of those board members present. IV. CLUB ADMINISTRATION A. The administration of the Club shall be by the Board of Directors. The Board of Directors shall consist of the officers and directors whose election, qualification, duties and term of office are set forth below. B. Each member of the board of Director shall have one vote. C. A Quorum of the Board of Directors shall be a majority of the then existing members of the Board of Directors. D. The elected officers of the Club shall be the Regional Executive who will function as President; the Assistant Regional Executive who will function as Vice President; Secretary, Treasurer, and Activities Director. They shall serve for two year terms, with a maximum of four consecutive years of service. The past Regional Executive shall attend board meetings for one year following the election of a new Regional Executive, but shall have no vote and shall serve only in an advisory capacity. E. In addition, there shall be four elected

directors. Each director shall serve a two year term, with a maximum of four consecutive years of service. The elections shall be staggered, with two directors running for office each year. F. Candidates for officers and directors shall be selected by a nominating committee and presented to the board for approval prior to annual elections. G. Additional nominations for officers and directors may be made in writing to the Secretary by petition of not less than five members of the Club, and submitted at least 30 days prior to the annual meeting. H. Candidates shall have been a member of the Club and SCCA Inc. continuously for at least two years prior to qualifying to run for office. Membership shall be deemed to have begun as of the date the member’s application is received by the Club’s membership volunteer. I. The officers and directors shall be those nominees duly elected by majority vote of the members present in person or by proxy at the annual meeting. Voting shall be by secret ballot. J. In the event of a vacancy among the Officers or Directors, the Board of Directors may appoint an acting officer or director to serve for the remaining service period of the vacated position. The appointee shall have the full authority of their position and, in the case of an acting director; the period of appointment shall not be regarded as a term in office for re-election purposes. K. The duties of the Officers and Directors shall be as follows: 1. The Regional Executive shall preside at the meetings of the Club and Board of Directors, shall set the agenda for those meetings, and shall be the primary point of contact between the Club and SCCA, Inc. The regional executive is authorized to sign contracts and checks on behalf of the Club. 2. The Assistant Regional Executive shall perform the duties of the Regional Executive in his or her absence, and shall assist the other
officers as required. 3. The Secretary shall attend all meetings of the members and Board of Directors and shall record all the votes and minutes of those meetings. The Secretary shall ensure that notice of all meetings of the members and votes by the members are communicated to the membership. 4. The Treasurer shall have custody of all money, debt, and obligations belonging to the Club. They shall receive money from the Club and deposit it in the Club account. The Treasurer is authorized to sign contracts and checks on behalf of the club. The Treasurer shall give a report on the financial status of the Club at the annual meeting, and when requested, at the Board Meetings and Membership Meetings. No obligations, debt or other liability shall be incurred by the Treasurer without the specific prior approval of the majority of the Board of Directors. 5. The Activities Director shall coordinate the Club’s calendar and carry out a balanced program of activities for the year. V. COMMITTEES 1. The Nominating Committee shall be appointed prior to July 1 of each year by the Board of Directors. None of the members shall be on the Board of Directors, with the exception of officers leaving office at the end of the year. The names of the members of the nominating Committee shall be announced after August 1. The Committee shall submit, in writing, the names of the candidates for election as officers and directors to the Board of Directors for approval. Following approval, the names of the candidates shall be published in the November issue of Top End prior to the annual meeting so that the membership may make an informed vote. 2. The Board of Directors may at any time appoint standing committees to act with respect to unique matters.

VI. FISCAL YEAR A. The fiscal year shall be the calendar year. VII. AMENDMENT OF BYLAWS A. The Board of Directors of the Club, or any 10 members, may by written petition submitted to the Secretary, propose amendments to the bylaws. B. Upon such proposal being made, a copy shall be included in the notice of the next meeting of the members, together with a proxy proposal. C. A vote shall be taken not less than 10 days nor more than 50 days following notification to the general membership. D. These bylaws may be amended by a two-third majority vote of the members present at the meeting at which the vote is taken, either in person or by proxy. VIII. REGIONAL TROPHIES AND AWARDS A. Eligibility to receive annual year end awards shall be confined to members of the Club. B. Eligibility to receive regional competition awards shall be confined to SCCA members. IX. GENDER The masculine gender, whenever used herein, shall include the feminine, the feminine shall include the masculine; the neuter shall include both the masculine and feminine; and the singular shall include the plural wherever necessary or appropriate. State of the Region – By Charles Tanck We lost RIT as a site for Solo but we replaced it with MCC. The RoadRally program was very successful and this year we
are off to a great start with more participants than last year. We did lose Perry’s Park on zoning issues but we are working on getting that back for the RallyCross site. Hopefully we will have another good year. FINGER LAKES REGION YEAR END AWARDS OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUITON TO THE REGION - (George B. Merwin Trophy) – Presented by Charles Tanck Awarded to the member who has contributed the most to the Region during the past year. All areas of the Club activities are taken into account—racing, rallying, concours, publicity, community services, etc. Participation is considered as well as working. The recipient should represent the best the Region has to offer the sport. This is the Region’s highest honor. This year the award is given to MARCUS KROLL. Marcus has been our secretary and has taken the lead on many things. When the website needed to be redone, he knew a guy. That’s a common theme here, anytime we need something done, Marcus knows a guy. We don’t want to know where he knows them from. He and Shaun have been chairs of the Solo group and Marcus has worked with the other groups on legal and other issues. Thank

SPORTSMANSHIP – (Alix Lafontant Trophy) – Presented by Marcus Kroll Awarded to the member who has most consistently exhibited the attributes of sportsmanship throughout the year and whose participation in SCCA events has been a credit to the Region. The term Sportsmanship implies that the award go to a true “sportsman”—one who competes in a race or rally competition seriously and who consistently places the ideals of sportsmanship above his own personal gain.
This year ’s recipient is SHAUN HALLAM. Shaun has worked on Solo and has been seen at rallies and timing & scoring at the race track. He has kept us honest with RIT. TOP END AWARD – Presented by Charles Tanck and Lynn Randall Awarded to a Regional member who has made an outstanding contribution to motorsports in general. (Selected by the TOP END Editor and Staff; “keeper” trophy.)
Recipient of this year’s award is CHRIS DEMINCO. Chris still teaches automotives at RIT, he has chaired the Fun One and will be chairing our Majors race; he races SVRA in addition to the Finger Lakes events. We are very pleased to have Chris working on all of these.
MECHANIC OF THE YEAR AWARD – Presented by Charles Tanck Awarded each year to a member in good standing of SCCA who has worked without financial gain as a primary motive. Success of the supported team should be strongly considered. The winner should normally come from Road Racing, but mechanics who work on Solo or Rally teams are not excluded. The winner shall be a credit to the sport. There shall be no repeat winners. Nominations should be made by the Rally, Solo and Competition Boards and the Road Racing Drivers Club with final selection being made by the Board of Directors.
Recipient of this year’s award is JAMES PLUTA. He attests to the fact that a good crew helps you wind up with a very good season. OUTSTANDING WORKER AWARD – (Gene Dinkel Trophy) – Presented by Charles Tanck, Shaun Hallam, Marcus Kroll Awarded to the Finger Lakes Region member who has devoted a notable amount of his or her time as a worker at motorsports events sponsored or sanctioned by the Finger Lakes Region. Primary consideration will be given to individuals who have worked in general worker categories, not as chiefs of specialties or as chairpersons of events. The individual must have worked in at least two different motorsports areas at least once, worked on at least one public service activity if the Region has conducted such, and been a true credit to the Region. The winner of the award this year is out of our Solo group and is CHRIS MORTON. He is at every event and serves as an instructor (in addition to winning Pro). He Photos this page, Mike Brunner 9
has been maintaining the timing equipment, which is on its last legs. This all came to a head at an RIT event where we had a very large turnout because other clubs were running with us. We had to drag the driver’s meeting out because the timing equipment had stopped working. Chris was in the truck using an SAE borrowed soldering iron redoing a trace that had burned out on the board. Nobody even knew that we had a problem and it turned out to be a great event. FINGER LAKES REGION SPECIAL RECOGNITION AWARD – Presented by Charles Tanck A special recognition award for the purpose of recognizing a member or members of the Region for recent recognizable efforts. This award is not given out often, only three times. This year’s award goes to BRUCE PERRY for outstanding efforts in the field of Cub Racing. Bruce has been our Scrutineer for a number of years, unfortunately he is finally giving it up which presents a problem we will have to work through. We really appreciate his efforts. He is also the owner of Perry’s Park, our RallyCross site. Bruce is always willing to help at a race, RallyCross or even inspecting or building a car. We really appreciate everything Bruce has done for the region. RALLY – By Tom Langdon First of all, they now have inoculations for MPRA; I recommend that you get those. Once again, as earlier alluded to, we had a successful rally program last year. This year we actually expanded, we are going to six winter events and so far we have had two that were very well attended. If you haven’t gone to one of those yet, come on out, beat your car to death and – ya’ know! The RallyCross program is in neutral as Perry’s Park is shut down due to dust complaints. (There is a farmer right next door working in his field generating dust, but we can’t drive a car in dusty conditions?) We are making good progress on RallyCross sites. RALLY WORKER OF THE YEAR – (Steve Kittelberger Trophy) – Presented by Tom Langdon Recipient selected by the rally board from the RoadRally and/or PerformanceRally program. Usually a member of Finger Lakes Region, but in some rare instances may be from outside the membership. This person was rallymaster for two events this year. He usually runs sweep during the winter events. He also opens up his house for the monthly rally meetings and provides drink and cookies and the occasional summer BBQ. A very nice individual and that would be RICK BARNES. I think I saw Rick riding by my house in Ontario; he lives in Victor, about 3:30 in the afternoon. OUTSTANDING RALLY CONTRIBUTOR – (John Robinson Award) – Presented by Tom Langdon Recipients are selected by the Rally board and may be competitors, workers, organizers, or any combination thereof, in the Road Rally and/or Performance Rally program. FLR membership is required. This person has brought the new era of social media into our rally efforts. He wanted us to be more current in publicizing RoadRally 10
and RallyCross using Facebook, Twitter, etc. along with posters and trophy artwork. It doesn’t hurt that he is also the RallyCross chairman. Our outstanding rally contributor of the year is TONY ZANNI. SOLO SOLO ROOKIE OF THE YEAR – Presented by Shaun Hallam and Marcus Kroll Awarded to the Finger Lakes Region driver who shows the greatest degree of promise during his first full season of Solo competition. He/she shall also be a credit to the Region. Selected by the Solo Board. We usually do not give the rookie of the year award to the person who wins the Novice class. This gentleman’s name kept coming up because who is out there in that STI, he is moving really quick. I don’t have much more to say about Kyle, he’s fast, he’s regular, and he does other stuff. He left Novice and won his first time in Street Prepared. KYLE LAMBERT is somebody to keep your eye on. SOLO IMPROVED DRIVER – Presented by Shaun Hallam and Marcus Kroll Awarded to the driver who has shown the greatest improvement in his/her driving performance over the course of the season. competition. He ran in the same class as Shaun and the only reason Shaun won the class was that he went home for the summer. He never finished lower than second, he won the club shootout at Devens and I believe he was fourth in Wilmington. So ERIC KUTILis our improved driver of the year. He is unbeatable at Pole Position, the new indoor kart track. SOLO DRIVER OF THE YEAR – Presented by Shaun Hallam and Marcus Kroll Instituted around 1994, and was determined to be awarded to the FLR Solo driver who demonstrated exemplary skill in his/her driving during the season. Consideration is given to a driver’s performance at the divisional and national levels of competition. This award may be given to a driver who wins a National Championship. Some consideration may be given to a driver’s performance and contributions during the season to the FLR Solo program as well. The winner will represent the Finger Lakes Region with dignity as well as excelling in his/her driving competition.

MOST IMPROVED DRIVER – Presented by Chris DeMinco Awarded to the Finger Lakes Region driver who has shown the greatest improvement during the season. Usually not awarded to a beginning driver who shows great promise, but to a license holder whose improvement over the previous season has resulted in a greatly improved competition record. He shall have been a credit to the Region on the race course. One person certainly came to mind that has made a great improvement over the last year. He has been racing since about 2000 and got his license in 2000. He is always at the track and probably the last to leave. Unfortunately health issues in 2010 forcing him to drop out of competition for a couple of years. He got the green light to return to racing in 2013, but he didn’t have the stamina to run hard for two days. In 2014 he came back with a vengeance, entering seven races in ITA. He took a third in NYSRRC in a field
Recipient shall have been a credit to the Region at the race course. He has been around since 1987 starting in Solo. He started club racing about eight years ago (maybe so that there was not a HOT road car around for his son to drive.) He race majors, divisionals, regionals amassing 185 points in the NYSRRC series in Spec Miata. He is there for anybody, was Assistant Regional Executive, been known to put a dropped burger back on the grill. The Finger Lakes Region’s driver of the year is DAVE CIUFO. Marcus Kroll Things are moving along as the Solo group gears up for another great year. I've made contact with the Z-Car Club of Rochester who is going to propose participating in one of our events at their next board meeting. I'm working on a Corvette contact - the Corvette Club hasn't been particularly responsive, so if someone has a connection with the Corvette Club or a Corvette Dealership we would really appreciate that help. We've decided that next year we're going to stay with the championship points format as it is, follow national classing (indexed by overall group, such as Street, Touring, etc. . . .), and require unique numbers per index class. Street Survival sanction has been granted and they are busy promoting the event. We will need both instructors and students. I've heard from quite a few people already interested in instructing, but let's make sure those teenage
drivers sign up! I'm also working with a local insurance company for some sponsorship help. Finally, I volunteered Chris DeMinco to be our chief classroom instructor while Shaun Hallam will act as safety steward. I realize that our schedule conflicts with some local events (especially the Majors). I can assure everyone that we were very sensitive to local schedules, as well as having to cater to national events which many of our drivers compete at. I can't deliver perfection, but based on site availability I did the best I could - conflicts are inevitable.

It is awarded to Charles Tanck. It was first awarded to Judy McAllister in 1985. The New York State Road Racing Championship (NYSRRC) series was created by Robert W. Stevens a driver and steward. Bob started racing in a Crossley HotShot. This year’s Robert W. Stevens Memorial Award goes to Glen Region member Dan Glueck. February 10, 2015 96 Church Street, Victor, NY These notes are grouped by subject and are not in chronological order. The following ten RoadRally and RallyCross enthusiasts were present; Rick Barnes, Carl Dresie, Ben Gilmore, Jamie Hayslip, John Kastenhuber, Jerry Kerwin, Gretchen Kriesen, Tom Langdon, Alan Smith and Gary Thomas. General Rally Rick Barnes was awarded the Steve Kittelberger Rally Worker of the Year trophy at the Jan 31 region awards banquet. Rick now has the “keeper” and the rotating trophy. Gary has sent four rally clocks out for repair. The new clock boxes were demonstrated; the clocks do not need to be removed from the boxes when being used for timing. Gary passed out a proposed “to do” list for a rally event. Pre running a rally with a rally computer can point out differences between the instructions as written and as used in calculating the legs. Gary and John are writing a rally for the Green Grand Prix. Waste Management Winter Rally Competitor entries stand at 15. The “old” radar gun and the Bushnell unit along with some simple instructions were passed on to Deputies Gretchen and Jamie. The Kustom Signals unit will be passed along after it is checked out. Winter Rally Series “Cabin Fever 2015” had 14 teams running out of the Scovill’s Grill in Dansville, down around Canisteo and back. “Lost in a Wintry Wood” has been pre-checked. Several changes were made do to a bridge being out and closed “Seasonal” roads. The general instructions for the winter series (they need to be posted on the region’s website) were discussed. There are several points in the generals that need to be emphasized at the pre-rally meeting. They include the use of triangles and tow ropes, the use of TAs (time allowances), etc. Triangles need to placed where oncoming traffic is alerted and should remain there until the extraction is complete. Time allowances should total 19.5 minutes for the half before and the half after the break. More time can result in a delay in the rally or failure to reach a check point before it closes. Each TA should be to the half minute, other values allowed are balks in sight of a

check point. The requested TA should be written on the score card before handing the card to the check point crew and on a slip handed to the crew. If a team has used all of their slips, a scrap of paper may be used. The third documentation is on the control log. Two of the three are needed for a TA to be accepted. Flyers are needed for the last two events. Proximity (or the same) of the starting and finishing location is a factor if the team members drive separately. Plans need to be made if the locations are different. Gary would like the 2016 trophies to be wine glasses. Large glasses may be needed to allow printing of the artwork. Miscellaneous Discussions “Straight at T” is not a valid route instruction. Jerry, Gary and others have a collection of rally routes from past events. John reportedly did “donuts” in a parking lot. Traction control varies from model to model, while a Subaru Outback will let you do “donuts,” slides, etc., other makes and models will do whatever it takes to protect the “idiot” behind the wheel. Jerry’s snow blower is finally working, allowing a path to be cleared in his back yard for the wiener dog to run around in. Yard workers are excluded from certain areas around radar units; Navy personnel are not restricted.

Cabin Fever Rally Report
February 11, 2015 Jamie Hayslip and Gretchen Kriesen Rallymasters We refer to our Winter Series events as, “Driver’s Rallies.” They are designed to test the skill of keeping on pace, keeping the car on the road in often adverse conditions (e.g., snow, ice, mud, gravel, fights with the navigator) and doing so while maintaining brisk speeds. It is the promise of that challenge that encouraged a hearty group of Rallyists to leave their warm, safe abodes on the cold evening of February 7 for the third biennial Cabin Fever Rally. As it turned out, the snow storms of the preceding weeks prepared the road conditions to a reasonable level of difficulty. The roads were so exciting that special thanks go out to Rick Barnes and Jason Kostyshak who were fairly busy with Sweep, assisting multiple teams from minor off-road adventures. Another
notable mishap was not automotive r e l a t e d , h o w e v e r, i t was one Tom L a n g d o n who reported finding himself sunk waist deep in a snow filled ditch while working a checkpoint. Praise to Deb Langdon who helped with that extraction. We are of course thankful to all the workers who clocked the field at 13 checkpoints including Bob VanSice, Tom and Deb Langdon, Jerry Kerwin, Barb Lissow, Larry Wells, Mike Tombs, Peter Blood, Alan Blood, Craig McMaster, and John Walsh and his friend Wells. The event started with 14 teams and 13 were counted at the finish (sorry about your engine trouble, Alan). The contest for the overall win was close: Gary Thomas and John Kastenhuber
coming out on top and took first in Equipped class. Jeff and Steve Coppola were just three points short of the overall position and took the Limited win. Griff Jones and Chris Haka overcame a few unintended adventures to win Stock while James Parascandola and Paul Grossi took top honors in Novice. It was also great to see some new folks at the event, especially those who come from long distances. We were happy to meet the Bucci family who came from the Mohawk-Hudson region across the State to join the fun.

How to build a rally 101. Step 1. Make illegal photocopies of your personal gazetteer, the staples guy has told me in the past “I’ll make them, but I didn’t do it”. Step 2. Find a start, a halfway point, and finish, (preferably one that won’t close a couple weeks before your event and cause panic & regrouping)…Sorry Manos, we sure miss you. Hello Buffalo Wild Wings Step 3. Drive (a lot), and make discreet black marks across your entire illegally copied map, thus creating a choose your adventure map. Spend your summer talking someone into literally trying to find the middle of nowhere for no good reason. Step 4, Agree to disagree…. As if you were married. Gary and I are safety stewards, checkpoint enthusiasts, and always trying to challenge the other teams at our events. This also means we get to check our own work. Famous quotes “John, we can’t put the checkpoint on the outside of

corners, I’m the safety steward” “C’mon Gary, that’s the best place, they’ll never guess that it is after seven hairpin corners and four elevation changes, It needs to be there” “This whole rally is to make Alan & Eric collect at least 100 points” “If I had to run this I’d be pissed off at me”. This was actual conversation this year. Step 5. Make sense of your discreet black lines, seriously. I tell myself to bring different colors to mark up the map, and yet I still find myself saying “OK, the map is built, I’m fairly certain there are no seasonals…Is that a road”? Step 6. Support your Big Oil. We need at least three trips on the route to get it right. 1st trip, get your mileages, Tulips, signs, pauses, CAS’s, Checkpoints, in order. This is also the longest trip. 2nd, Make absolutely certain you change cars so the factor is completely different when mileaging the route, also, check things, all the things. 3rd, make sure you do at least one rally prior, so that way you can use a completely different factor to mileage…again. Make sure to tell everyone it was mileaged in a Camaro with four different sized bicycle tires, and a broken trip switch. Just to make sure the
competitors know what they are in for. Step 7. Swear at EXCEL. Excel spreadsheets, especially fun, macro enabled, linked sheet spreadsheets with 40 pages of VB, were never meant to work (ask the limited folks). Figure out the bugs before you print competitor versions. Step 8. Teamwork… aka the navigator does it all. So Gary and I work like the A team, he is Face, and I am Murdock, probably. Step 9. Pray, Chicken Sacrifice, Voodoo, whatever you have to do for cold weather and a little snow. I missed this tidbit and we got 45° and nothing. This made for some very “interesting” roads. We ended up with many roads that were dry, then slushy, then snow, then dry again for most of the evening. But everyone seemed to have a good time. The Last Step. Have Fun, it’s all about having fun and others enjoying the fun you are having. Make stories, not headlines, right? Now onto the results, we had 20 cars start and 19 finish (Kurt Thiel lost a head gasket before checkpoint 1). We had some deer sightings, and one lady who thought going less than the posted speed limit was too fast for “her” road (she owns it, obviously). 15
In Novice, there were five entries. 3rd in class with 1586 was the team of Steve & Jennifer Spano, 2nd in class with a 1158 went to Matt Chimeleiwski & Carrie Kiecyzkaljo, 1st In class and 11th overall with a 654 goes to Bruce & James Coulombe. In Equipped, we had three entries. 3rd in class with a 665, were Dan & Anna Thiel, 2nd in class with a 106, was the team of Paul Batman & Matt Rhoads, 1st in class and 3rd Overall with a 96 (all the way from Maryland) Eric Salminen & Dennis Blevins. In Stock, we had three entries. 3rd in class with a 978.5 factored, was the team of Ryan Kolupa & John Wengler, 2nd in class went to Griff Jones & Chris Haka. 1st in class and painstakingly 2nd overall (the
factor got them) was the rally duo of Jamie Hayslip & Gretchen Kriesen with a factored of 89.1. Great Job!!! In Limited we had nine entries. 3rd in class with a 123 was the team of Karl & Kirk Haltiner, 2nd in class, and the best raw score of 80, factored of 100 (again, the factor killed them) was the newcomer team of Satish Gopalkrishnikan & Savera D’Souza…watch out limited, they are coming for you. 1st in class and 1st overall with an 87, was the team of Jeff & Steve Coppola. This was a very competitive event, and I hope that everyone had a great time running it. Includes a two level rolling kart stand, 16 wheels, mounted rain tires, 4 clutches with gears, about two dozen sprockets for gear ratio changes and tools for mounting tires. Also included are lots of spare parts, including both front axles, steering rods, brake pads, fasteners, racing oil, carburetor, fuel pump, etc. Kart is set up for SCCA Solo in JA with spec tires (won every time last 2 years) and can be used in JB with a restrictor. Have also run it in KM, and even though it’s not using the larger, stickier tires allowed, it still finished 3rd in Modified for 2014. We have only run it in SCCA Solo events so very little time on the engine and no chassis damage. Have other kart parts I’ll throw in and have driver’s suits in 3 (teen age) sizes if you need one.
