6. LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT:
FPC President Stu Jones updates us on the exciting Summer Bahamas agenda and reminds us of the importance of safety messaging in a sport that continues to fall short on safety practices by many participants.
8. MIAMI BOAT SHOW BASH - FEB 2025
The South Beach bash that just keeps on going after thirty years and gives Miami Boat Show exhibitors and show visitors a place to let down their hair and tip up their glasses!
10. 30 TH ANNUAL MIAMI BOAT SHOW POKER RUN - FEB 2025
It was a momentous occasion for Team FPC and participants from all over the United States and Canada, to celebrate three decades of this mid-February escape to paradise, returning to Hawks Cay Resort in the Florida Keys!
34. NAPLES POKER RUN - MARCH 2025
Bringing back the poker run excitement to Naples sparked a new chapter in FPC event planning, as over thirty poker run teams discovered this upscale destination has shed its sleepy image and emerged as a first-class boating playground.
52. 15 TH ANNUAL TAMPA BAY POKER RUN - APRIL 2025
Never to disappoint, this downtown Tampa poker run venue has stood the test of time, as over seventy poker run teams united for a festive three-day format with exciting boating by day plus first-class dining and entertainment to the midnight hour!
72. NOR-TECH OWNERS SPRING RENDEZVOUS
For its second year running, Team Nor-Tech pulled all the stops for a firstclass reunion dedicated to their loyal Nor-Tech owners, moving the event to the landmark Westin Cape Coral Resort, and hitting record numbers with over fifty teams in attendance!
FPC’s only event that crosses state lines into Alabama, provided a great reunion of loyal attendees who enjoyed a double-header format, with Friday run to Juana’s in Navarre and a Saturday run to Mobile…. making
The Wharf its poker run headquarters!

The New FPC Girls Team on the King of Clubs Nor-Tech- Orange Beach 2025
We pushed our publication dates for this issue of Powerboating in Paradise Magazine into June this year for this Summer 2025 issue, so that we could pack this edition with feature coverage of several events. As you will see in these editorial features, we finally dropped our March Spring Key West event in exchange for our FPC return to Naples, and we followed that with a record-attendance Nor-Tech Owners Spring rendezvous. In both events, a venue change provided fantastic attendance and reminded FPC organizers that changing the schedule and working with new event venues, may often produce remarkable results for organizers and participants alike. In keeping with this tradition, you will see some new events added to the FPC event calendar very soon, including the return of our once-popular Holiday Season Fun Run in late December, which will visit the Florida Keys.
Since we are on the subject of “new and exciting events” I want to share that Jackie and I just returned from a late May Europe vacation, which involved an 8-car Porsche car rally staged by Fast Lane Travel. We attended with FPC members Mark & Eileen Fischer, and while this is not necessarily a boating event, it is certainly the most exciting way to explore the European countryside! Starting in Stuttgart Germany with a private tour of the Porsche factory, the 7-day agenda started with high-speed 150-mph cruising on the Autobahn then traversed mountain passes in Switzerland, Austria, and Northern Italy. I say this only to plant the seed now, that FPC will likely be planning a very special European driving adventure for late spring 2026. So, for those adventureseekers who are equally passionate about sports car touring as you are about powerboating, we are excited to bring this first-class adventure back to the FPC agenda! Operated by Fast Lane Travel, the format will feature brand new Porshe’s from the Stuttgart factory, plus 5-star hotels and dining along a scenic driving course, with St Tropez and Monte Carlo as destinations! Please stay tuned for details that will be released later this fall!
Amsterdam- May 2025
their very own summer playgrounds, and we always enjoy every event we attend!
On a final note, I want to share my latest safety update on the poker run scene! We are absolutely impressed with the widespread positive response by FPC members to the mandatory PFD regulations on all FPC events. It was a big push to get everyone on board, but the results are better with every event. Some of you may have noticed that FPC has begun to stock and supply a wide variety of inflatable and foam-based PFDs from the leading manufacturers including Mustang Survival, BlueStorm and Onyx. We want everyone to have the best products on board, without compromising style points! Soon we will be offering the widest range of colorful PFDs that make it FUN to be SAFE! Please stay tuned as we stock up on supplies over the summer months and let us help you equip your crew with the coolest life jackets on the market! Remember, the best poker runs are the ones that you finish safely! Let’s do this together!
Meanwhile, summer 2025 offers a continuous menu of what might be described as Adventures in Paradise, with two exciting Bahamas trips planned for June, and August. We are also pleased to bring back the FPC Summer Poker Run tour, with our Cigarette Top Gun Flight 1130 heading to poker runs

MIAMI BOAT SHOW BASH 2025
PRESENTED BY
With the world-famous Miami Boat Show returning to its original venue at the Miami Beach Convention Center in 2023, most loyal visitors and marine industry professionals agreed that it was simply good to be back! After getting acclimated to the updated show venue and the new Informa management team, it was not long before FPC considered the option of bringing back “The Bash,” a longstanding event that commenced in 1993 and ran for almost three decades. Once again FPC partnered with Matt Trulio from Speedonthewater and Nor-Tech Hi Performance Boats agreed to remain as presenting sponsor for its second year running, and soon the 2025 Miami Boat Show Bash was off and running in its Friday night spot!

Returning to the historic art-deco Sagamore Hotel on Collins Ave was an easy decision by organizers. With its location just two blocks from the Miami Beach Convention Center, it was the ideal post-show getaway for show visitors, exhibitors, and performance boating enthusiasts to gather for a festive evening of fun! Complimentary food, beverages, and a live show on stage featuring the Miss Miami Boat Show Poker Run swimwear contest, filled the evening with an upbeat South Beach vibe. Special thanks to Nor-Tech Hi Performance Boats and the supporting sponsors for taking part in this fabulous function!

Celebrating The Big 3-0!
The Miami Boat Show Poker Run logged a big number this past February, operating uninterrupted for three decades, and joined the ranks of its senior FPC siblings including the Bahamas and Key West Poker Runs!
Story by: Stu Jones
Sometimes it is hard to imagine that we at FPC have carried the torch, year in and year out, for three decades or more on at least three of our annual poker run events. The leader in this category has been the annual Bahamas Poker Run, which commenced in 1992, followed by the annual Key West Poker Run, which had its first run in Fall of 1993 with a departure from Pier 66 Resort in Fort Lauderdale. And alas, the Miami Boat Show Poker Run has finally joined the ranks of the 30-something club, celebrating thirty years this past February, returning to Hawks Cay Resort & Marina on Duck Key. Historically, this event has bounced around from Key Largo to Islamorada, Marathon and back on several occasions, and while the event headquarters has changed over the years for assorted reasons, the overall theme has remained
consistent! Combining the need for a mid-February escape to paradise with the opportunity to see a wide selection of brand-new high-performance boats from the leading builders is a simple format that has never wavered!
The 2025 edition of this annual pilgrimage to the Florida Keys kicked off again at Grove Harbour Marina, with a Thursday departure to lead off the four-day format. With approximately 55-teams in attendance, the numbers may have seemed to be a little off from the previous year’s 70boat fleet, but organizers discovered a year earlier that the Hawks Cay venue started to feel a little over-crowded with the larger roster, which seated well over 300 guests for the Saturday night party, in a banquet room that would comfortably seat about 250.
Now in its second consecutive year at this popular resort based in the middle Keys near Marathon, the Hawks Cay management team took notice of the changes necessary after the 2024 visit, and the 2025 event seemed to flow without a hitch!
After an exciting run from Miami on Thursday, Friday morning was dedicated to aerial photography sessions, which were met with some challenges from Mother Nature, due to high winds on the east side of Duck Key. But the winds did not deter many of the weekend warriors from their daily outings, which offered a variety of options.
The poker run format provided attendees a flexible cruising agenda on each of the open days, Friday and Saturday.
With an abundance of waterfront dining options in either direction, the teams broke off into smaller groups and frequented the more popular spots such as Faro Blanco Resort and Island Grill in Marathon, while the more adventurous attendees opted for the crowded sandbar near Three Waters Resort (formerly Postcard Inn), just twenty-five miles to the north in Islamorada. In either case, Hawks Cay Marina appeared deserted in the daytime hours, only to be filled with colorful fiberglass and rows of Mercury Racing outboards as far as the eye could see by late afternoon. Words cannot match the power of visceral imagery, so we’ll let this colorful editorial feature tell the story of how much fun our attendees had at the 30th Annual Miami Boat Show Poker Run!

FPC members demonstrated elite rafting skills at the Thursday lunch stopover at Gilberts Key Largo. Absolute perfection!
No Florida Powerboat Club event could be staged from any location without first class marina partners to provide a launch pad for dozens of powerboat teams that travel hundreds, and even thousands of miles to attend. The team at Grove Harbour Marina continues to offer its support for these FPC poker run events, and despite its small geographic footprint in the heart of Coconut Grove, this venue continues to operate like a welloiled machine, regardless of the size of the poker run event. Two major hotels, including the Courtyard Marriott and Ritz Carlton, are walking distance from the marina, not to mention a vibrant Coconut Grove entertainment district, just two blocks away!
On the heels of the Miami Boat Show, FPC members were already rolling into Grove Harbour marina, to take advantage of lifting services, weekend storage for trucks and trailers, and in-water transient docking on the night before poker run departure. On Thursday morning prior to the poker run departure, the marina was alive with excitement, as teams enjoyed a dockside breakfast, quick captains meeting, and by 10:30am the FPC girls were handing off poker cards dockside, as teams hit the throttles southbound for Key Largo! Special thanks to the entire team at Grove Harbour Marina for their continued partnership with FPC.

Stopping at Gilberts Resort in Key Largo has been an FPC tradition for decades, and it is quite easy to see why. With one of the largest tiki bars in the Florida Keys and over five-hundred feet of sturdy docking, the simplicity of rafting up to sixty boats in a matter of minutes and feeding three hundreds guests a hearty lunch in under an hour, just cannot be matched anywhere else! But it wasn’t always that way. Back in the early1990’s and three owners ago, Gilberts was a run-down hotel full of derelict sailing vessels tied to its dock, which had missing boards, rusty nails, and no cleats whatsoever! That all changed in 1998 when the (then) owner Reinhardt Shaup finally listened to the FPC President, removing the run-down vessels and allowing FPC to repair
the docks, on their own dime, of course! Don’t laugh, true story…but the investment was worth every dollar!
Fast forward twenty-five years, and it is apparent that the third owner of Gilberts, over a forty-year span, has the program on cruise control. With updated docks, renovated hotel rooms, and a hard-working restaurant team that can serve a thousand customers on any given Sunday, dropping in with three hundred poker run guests, is just a walk in the park. Special thanks to owner Elina Weisberg and restaurant manager Amber Howard for welcoming FPC on the Miami Boat Show Poker Run!

Friday Night Lights
WITH HAWKS CAY MARINA LIT UP BY A COLORFUL COCKPIT AND UNDERWATER LIGHT SHOWS FROM THE IMPRESSIVE FLEET, FPC MEMBERS GATHERED FOR A FESTIVE EVENING OF FOOD, FUN AND A CAMARADERIE, AS THE POKER HANDS WERE PLAYED AND DOZENS OF AWARDS PRESENTED.
With the popular four-day format for the Miami Boat Show Poker Run, this gives attendees three nights to enjoy in Duck Key, with many dinner options on property or just twenty minutes down US1 to Marathon. But Friday is party night, and all of the poker run teams, and their crews are invited to attend the Poker Run Dinner & Awards party. This year’s banquet was moved to a larger dining room, and it gave everyone plenty of space to move around freely, and enough time to hit the poker tables, have a few cocktails and enjoy a fabulous dinner. But the highlight of the evening as always is the ongoing sponsor presentations and President’s Choice awards. Of course, with so many categories plenty of teams went home with a coveted wall plaque or broken propeller award, which can ensure bragging rights for a lifetime! Towards the end of the evening after the poker tables are closed, the top three poker run team winners were recognized, and we congratulate Howard Hefner in Team INSANITY for taking home the grand prize! Thanks to everyone who joined us, and we are pleased to announce the 2026 event will return to Hawks Cay Resort.

TORNA A NAPOLI !
It was 2011 when Florida Powerboat Club last made Naples Florida a scheduled stop on the club’s annual event calendar, and the photo archives revealed ideal spring weather, great waterfront dining venues and an abundance of calm coastal cruising waters. But these criteria are not the sole grounds for establishing a successful poker run venue for a growing powerboat club. Indeed, the most challenging roadblock in Naples for the next several years was the scarce number of waterfront marinas that offered transient docking and upscale lodging, the two most crucial components needed to support a major boating event. Naples sadly, did not meet muster, until now.
Over the course of the next decade, FPC president Stu Jones kept a watchful eye on resort and marina development activities in the Naples area, soon to discover the Naples Hyatt House, located in the heart of downtown Naples.
This new facility offered a large inventory of upscale accommodations plus an enormous floating dock marina to support up to forty transient powerboats, and the pieces of the puzzle started to come together.
Finding the right weekend for a poker run event would be the next box to check off, and it was an easy decision to discontinue FPC’s March Spring Key West event, which had dwindled in numbers over recent years, replacing it with the “new” Naples Poker Run. The late March dates captured the snowbird crowd before they headed home for the season, and did not interfere with other FPC events, with dates that were exactly four weeks after Miami Boat Show Poker Run, and three weeks prior to the popular Tampa Bay Poker Run.
Alas, FPC was headed back to Naples, with about thirtyfive registered teams.
Returning to Naples on the Southwest Florida coast after a dozen year absence left FPC members asking one simple question."What took us so long?"
Story by: Stu Jones
If there were any challenges remaining, most attendees would agree that the boat launch facilities for visiting teams are not the best in the Naples area, forcing FPC management to produce as many options as possible. Sadly, the city planners years ago never imagined that recreational boats would morph into 40-50 foot multi-engine center consoles and cats that dominate the poker run scene, and therefore all of the city boat ramps were designed to manage and park small fishing boats averaging 20-25 feet, so there are virtually no parking spots and limited mobility for the big rigs at all three of the area boat ramps. Offsite parking for boat trailers was arranged at a local boat dealership, which solved the problem temporarily, but finding more trailer parking will be on the club’s TO-DO lists for the coming years.
The agenda for the Naples event followed a standard weekend format, with arrivals on Thursday to prepare for
a Friday and Saturday boating itinerary. The Friday lunch run was scheduled northbound to Fort Myers Beach but had to be scratched due to rough coastal waters in the Gulf of America and no ICW option northbound from Naples. Instead, the group took a scenic ride southbound along the ICW to Marco Island, where several teams discovered a variety of waterfront lunch stops.
Evening activities offered an abundance of dining options at area restaurants, most of them just walking distance from the Naples Hyatt House, and the overall feedback from most attendees was a pleasant experience was had by all. Earlier closing times at most dining establishments still reflect the slower pace of Naples compared to bigger cities like Miami or Tampa, but staying out until the wee hours during a poker run is not on everyone’s wish list after a long day being on the water. (does that make me sound old?)

Poker Run teams depart from Naples Hyatt House Saturday morning as first poker card was handed off.
The Saturday run proved to be the highlight of the weekend for all attendees, as the fleet was underway by 10:30 am, collecting the first poker card dockside at the Naples Hyatt House, then another from a Pardo yacht anchored near Gordon’s Pass, the gateway to the Gulf. Notably, the Pardo yacht, named “Problem Child”, is owned by FPC members Michael and Lori Smith, who were quite active with FPC ten years earlier with their Nor-Tech 3900 Supervee and later, a Cigarette 41 GTR center console. The Smith’s were very helpful with the Naples event planning and recon missions, and it was a perfect fit to have them on the handoff mission with family and friends on board, considering the Pardo, a day cruiser, would not maintain the normal cruising speeds of the FPC fleet. With multi-million dollar mansions as the backdrop for poker card #2, the setting illustrated the opulence of living along these mansion-lined waterways.

SATURDAY LUNCH: EVERGLADES CITY
With much lighter winds than the days prior, the coastal waters settled and provided an enjoyable ride southbound to Indian Key Pass, located beyond the Cape Romano shoals, taking the fleet into the scenic beauty of Everglades National Park to the quiet, backwater town of Everglades City. Our destination was Everglades Isle RV Resort, an upscale, class A motorcoach park with lavish grounds, a giant clubhouse for group functions, plus an extensive floating dock marina around the perimeter of the park. A hearty BBQ lunch was served to over 150 guests, who had the option of indoor or outdoor dining on this beautiful spring day. The RV park residents, many of them seniors, not only engaged socially with our attendees, but several had volunteered their services as dock assistants or lunch servers for the entire event. It was like a big happy family waiting for us to arrive! Yes indeed, we all felt like rock stars, and it was an experience that many of us will never forget!

BELIEVE IN BEYOND
Story by: Stu Jones
Considering that Hillsborough and Pinellas Counties are among Florida’s top five ranked counties for boat registration along with the tri-county area of Southeast Florida, it makes perfect sense that the Tampa Bay area is one of the most active recreational boating regions throughout the Sunshine State. That is certainly what prompted FPC to take notice of this very active boating playground in the late 1990’s, as the club experimented with various events up and down Florida’s Gulf Coast from Fort Myers to St. Petersburg, and over the next decade a handful of venues came and went. It wasn’t until about 2010, when club founder Stu Jones decided to establish an annual event format in St. Petersburg, using the landmark Renaissance Vinoy Resort, a glorious Flagler-era property that opened in 1925 and after many years, was later designated in the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. With
the Tampa Bay Poker Run now established as an annual fixture on the FPC calendar, the appeal of the Vinoy Resort & Marina soon diminished as a poker run headquarters, due to the shrinking number of transient slips, not to mention kickback from nearby residents who complained daily about the loud engines and dockside stereos!
By 2018, the move was made to Downtown Tampa, setting the stage for the next chapter in the evolution of what is now a fixture on the Spring event calendar for FPC. The downtown area offers an endless inventory of upscale lodging, including the Westin Waterside, Tampa Marriott and more recently JW Marriott was added to the mix. The most obvious appeal to most attendees is the vibrant atmosphere of downtown Tampa and the countless dining and entertainment options, many of them on-site or just steps from hotel lobbies.
After LOGGING fifteen years of the Tampa Bay Poker Run, the vibrant downtown Tampa venue continues to deliver an exciting big city vibe and expansive boating playground on its doorstep, DELIVERING SOLID PROOF THAT THE TAMPA EVENT IS HERE FOR THE LONG HAUL!
Primary docking was staged at the Tampa Convention Center, with a limited number of slips at the nearby Tampa Marriott, although the 10-slip overflow at Marjorie Park Marina on Davis Island was off limits for the second year in a row, due to recent hurricane damage.
The Tampa Bay Poker Run format remains locked in mid-April, making it an ideal run for many FPC members who want to get in one last poker run event, before trailering back to homeports outside of Florida for the summer months. The three-day agenda resembles many other FPC events, with a Thursday arrival program, using the nearby Davis Island boat ramp for the trailer crowd, and a small number of full-service marinas for forklift-assisted launching.
The Friday morning itinerary kicked off with a lunch funrun to a popular waterfront restaurant Sunset Grill, located
along Tampa Bay’s eastern shoreline, in a boating-centric community called Little Harbor. The facility is managed by Suntex Marinas, which partnered with FPC to provide adequate transient mooring and docking assistance for the 60-plus fleet arriving for lunch. Many teams had traveled from their homeports to rendezvous with the group, which made for a pleasant, well-attended lunch stopover.
The Saturday run kicked off on schedule from the Tampa Bay Convention Center docks, with the first poker card, then took the group on a 100-mile course to rendezvous with a series of yacht checkpoints at Egmont Key, Vinoy Basin and Hula Bay. A total of four popular waterfront restaurants accommodated the 60-boat fleet, and by late afternoon all teams had returned to their docks safely, with no incidents.

TO REMEMBER
Nor-tech's management team stepped up their game for the 2nd Annual Owners Spring Rendezvous, uniting hundreds of attendees and creating memories to last a lifetime!
Story by: Stu Jones
t is no secret that many performance boat manufacturers appreciate the importance of unique events to keep their customers active and enjoying the powerboating lifestyle. Just a few years ago, to commemorate their 30th Anniversary of boat building, the Nor-tech management team staged a special party, inviting owners and dealers to participate, and help celebrate the success of the Nor-Tech brand. Included in the weekend format was an owner’s fun run on local waters between Cape Coral and Useppa Island.
Then again, in Spring of 2024 the factory team staged an exclusive owner’s rendezvous at South Seas Resort on Captiva Island, which brought together loyal Nor-tech owners, with dealers and the Nor-Tech management team for a relaxing weekend that included first class lodging, fine dining and two days of boating fun!
After a banner production year in 2024, it was time to take it up a notch, and Nor-tech teamed up with FPC by announcing their Spring Rendezvous 2025 to be staged at the highly acclaimed Westin Cape Coral Resort & Marina. The response was tremendous, as the event roster soon reached fifty registered teams, with Florida Powerboat Club managing event registrations and hotel lodging for the guests, on behalf of Nor-Tech.
In late April, just two weeks after the completion of the Tampa Bay Poker Run, Nor-tech owners began rolling into Cape Coral to launch boats, check into hotel rooms, as the annual Nor-Tech dealer meeting started to wind down. The marina was soon lined up with a variety of colorful Nor-tech models, including 340, 390 and 450 Sports, as well as several brand new Nor-Tech 400 Supersport models, all powered by Mercury Racing.
In some cases, dealers were using this event to deliver brand new boats, making it equally exciting to see so many new owners were now joining the extended Nor-Tech family.
For the Friday Fun Run, Nor-Tech management requested that Florida Powerboat Club assist with a group lunch run, and with almost forty boats wanting to join in, the Three Fisherman’s Restaurant along the Caloosahatchee River in Fort Myers was the ideal destination! Their hundreds of feet of floating guest dock, plus an industrious restaurant staff that had a “bringiton attitude,”and a record of hosting FMO events, made organizers confident that they could manage the large lunch function.
The Friday run started with a rendezvous at the Sanibel Bridge, and with the FPC Nor-Tech 390 “King of Clubs”
leading the pace, the fleet proceeded for an offshore ride in the Gulf of America to Redfish pass, before turning into the protected waters of Pine Island Sound. Shortly after 12 noon, the group arrived at Three Fisherman’s, where the restaurant staff churned out food and beverage for over 160 guests!
Friday evening featured an upscale reception hosted by Nor-Tech on the event lawn, overlooking the new Westin marina docks, which were loaded with colorful Nor-Techs, all ready for another day of excitement! At the event check-in, goody bags were offered to all the attending teams, which were packed with swag and souvenir Nor-Tech polo shirts to commemorate the special occasion.

Saturday provided another fabulous day of boating, and the light winds ensured that the fleet could run offshore in the gulf waters once again. With the Nor-Tech chopper in hot pursuit, the fleet ventured further north and turned in at Boca Grande and then navigated Charlotte Harbor to a rustic waterfront outpost called Riviera Bar & Grill. Located in Punta Gorda, this destination was well known by area boaters, but for the out-of-town Nor-Tech owners who were visiting for the first time, it was the perfect setting! With hundreds of feet of bulkhead and solid pilings for mooring, the entire fleet of over fifty Nor-Techs settled in for a fantastic lunch, all sponsored by Team Nor-Tech.
The festivities continued later with a first-class dinner party at Westin’s largest ballroom, and featured an open bar, succulent surf & turf menu, continuous entertainment, and a festive atmosphere for all the enjoy. This Spring Fling did exactly what it was intended to for the Nor-Tech factory team, to show their appreciation to loyal NorTech owners, and give them a “Wow” experience. To that end, we would all agree, Mission Accomplished!

ORANGE CRUSH!
After six years running, the Orange Beach Powerboat Week at the Wharf continues to draw a loyal crowd of repeat attendees as their ongoing romance with this fun Alabama boating playground keeps them coming back every May!
Story by: Stu Jones
Extending north from Key West to the Florida Panhandle, the Gulf of America shoreline enters Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas, with a combined distance of almost 1700 miles along US soil. And while Alabama claims only 60 miles of that shoreline, the tidal inshore waters that include bays, rivers, bayous and intracoastal waterways measure over 600 miles of protected, navigable waterways. The Pensacola & Perdido passes, along with Mobile Bay entrance, provide easy access points to the gulf from these protected waterways, making Orange Beach and Gulf Shores Alabama popular boating playgrounds that have made Alabama an attractive hotbed for the local community and visitors alike.
Florida Powerboat Club first explored the Alabama boating scene in the summer of 2004, staging a small poker run event in Orange Beach, but it was not until 2019 that the club took the concept to the next level with a more structured event.
This was the start of a new partnership between FPC and The Wharf, an Orange Beach family-friendly, retail, lodging, dining, and entertainment complex that featured a full-service marina. Minus the 2020 global pandemic, this tradition has continued for six years, with FPC returning to The Wharf this past May, staging a stellar fleet of 42 powerboat teams from eleven states.
With the relative ease of launching boats at the spacious, modern boat ramp across from The Wharf, many of the visiting teams were in town by Thursday, settled in their slips and checking into the Spring Hill Suites and luxury condo units on site. Poker Run activities commenced that evening with the Miss Orange Beach Powerboat Week, hosted by the Sandshaker Lounge at The Wharf (see page 82), and it was an otherwise flexible agenda with many dining and lounge options just steps from all on-site lodging.
With two structured boating runs planned over Friday and Saturday, each morning a captain’s breakfast was staged at Marker 158 Restaurant overlooking the marina. The morning function allowed captains and first mates to attend in a casual setting to review important course details and safety guidelines, a practice that has been unique to the Orange Beach event format.
By 10:30am Friday, the boats were underway, making their first touch-and-go dockside at The Wharf, with a bevy of six lovely FPC girls handing off the poker card #1. The eastbound run to Juana’s in Navarre offered an offshore route in the Gulf of Mexico, and a protected ICW route, which is favored when windy conditions and choppy gulf-coast seas produce a rough ride. Surprisingly, most of the teams opted for the offshore course, providing great photo and video opportunities for the chopper crew in pursuit! After crossing state lines into Florida, the teams began arriving at Juana’s Pagodas before noon, but many decided to shorten their stay, and hustle back to the Wharf before the afternoon storms swamped the region.
With a structured itinerary that flowed smoothly after the Friday rains dissipated, the Saturday run was a rinse-and-repeat cycle in some ways, albeit in a westbound direction to Mobile Bay, where the poker run returned to a rustic backwater restaurant called Grand Mariner, located on the Dog River near the city of Mobile.
Saturday evening wrapped up the three-day adventure with a private poker run dinner party at Dicks Last Resort, a spacious restaurant that has offered a private buyout option to FPC for the last three years. (see page 94) The consensus among many attendees was that the convenience of The Wharf venue and the casual, fun vibe of the Orange Beach Powerboat Week event, are the primary reasons they keep them coming back, year after year!
The 7th Annual Orange Beach Powerboat Week will return to The Wharf in May 2026, so stay tuned for dates and registration details at the FPC website, www.flpowerboat.com
Some attendees may assume that it was the Emerald Coast Poker Run in Destin that established the tradition of a Miss Powerboat Week contest at each annual event, but historically, this practice dates back to Florida Powerboat Club’s earlier days. As far back as 1991, FPC has staged bikini contests and model search pageants in conjunction with many poker run events, a trend that has stood the test of time!
Miss Orange Beach Powerboat Week kicked off festivities for the poker run weekend on Thursday evening, and for the third year the event returned to the Sandshaker Lounge at the Wharf. With the 2019 contest winner Amber Content taking charge of model recruiting and organizational aspects of this annual highlight, a twelve-contestant roster of lovely ladies provided a fun evening of entertainment for all in attendance. Special thanks to Chad Havens and Demon Bikini for sponsoring this special occasion, and congratulations to all the winners!

Saturday Night Awards
In addition to the adventure that is associated with performance boating and fun we have by attending organized events, one of the key ingredients that contributes to the magic of the poker run experience, is the camaraderie that fellow FPC members share with other powerboaters. While people come from all walks of life and from many places (11 states alone for the OB event), the common denominator is the passion for performance boating, and the chance to share fun stories and make new boating friends.
The Saturday night dinner and awards party is that one place where it all comes together, and for five of the six years that the Orange Beach event has been staged, it was at Dicks Last Resort, formerly The Port, located on Main Street at The Wharf. Once again, restaurant management offered an exclusive private event format, which came with a premium and required additional financial support. Special thanks to Paul & Tee Bertucci from Team Beer Money for their sponsor commitment, along with over a dozen event attendees who contributed to the all-night open bar! What a party and what a fantastic way to wrap up another successful Orange Beach Powerboat Week! SJ
