Cassie looked flushed and was taking off her sweater, “No, I’m alright. I’ll be freezing in a moment anyway.”

Menopause can be a challenging time. Hot one moment, cold the next.

“I had a new patient with hypothyroidism earlier today who had me raise the A/C. The thermostat is right there if you change your mind.”

“Thanks Dr. Woliner, but I dress in layers. It’s easier that way.” Cassie continued, “The last three years has been a roller-coaster. I wake up every hour, 2:15, 3:15, 4:15 …”

I empathized, “I can see how lack of sleep can make one irritable. So, in addition to hot flashes, what else is going on?”

“You know that Suzanne Sommers book [1]? I got everything in there. I’m dry down there, actually, everywhere. My eyes and skin too. Over the last five years, no sex drive. Nada. Nothing. Zip.” “A woman’s hormones do more than to help her get pregnant. Lack of balance leads to hot flashes, night sweats, insomnia, anxiety, irritability, dryness, weight gain, and low libido. Have you tried anything?”

“My Ob/Gyn wrote a prescription for PremPro, but my sister had breast cancer so I said ‘Thanks, but no thanks [2].’ Oprah and Dr. Oz have both had shows on natural hormone replacement, so I went that way.”

“I agree that Premarin and Provera both increase the risk of cancer, and although there is pretty good evidence that natural progesterone is safe, I won’t go as far as saying that bioidentical estrogen is without risks [3]. At least we don’t have to abuse horses to make them, so that’s a plus right there [4].”

“Abusing my husband, more like it. I was raging after that doctor implanted me with those hormone pellets.”

“Although some doctors are proponents of compounded pellets, I’m not. The rate they dissolve is unpredictable, and I’ve seen some women have irregular bleeding requiring a D&C, and others with testosterone levels greater than a man [5].”

“After a few months (and a few Xanax), my body calmed down and I was ready to try again, this time with a different doctor. I just couldn’t get used to those troches (pronounced tro’-kes).”

“Hormones can be dosed in many different ways; capsules, creams, and troches (also called lozenges). I find minimal advantage to sublingual lozenges, as studies show you swallow most of the medication anyway [6].”

“I asked him about that, but he was insistent I buy those lozenges right there from him.”

“Um, not only is that unethical, it’s illegal too. The Department of Health prohibits doctors from dispensing compounded meds from their offices [7]. Just look at all the NECC-fungal meningitis cases to know why.”

After I finished my 80-minute history and physical exam, Cassie asked, “So now I have to do that spit test?”

“No. I know many hormone clinics tout saliva testing, but for female hormones, they’ve been shown to be unreliable [8]. Blood tests have a proven track record, so I prefer them.”

I wrote out several prescriptions. “Instead of using the same formula for each patient, I prescribe each hormone separately, so we can titrate them individually based upon your symptoms. Later on, we can combine them into one to make it easier to take. Here’s a list of several quality compounding pharmacies in the area [9].”

“

I prescribe [natural hormones] individually based upon your symptoms.

”

Within a few months, Cassie was on a regimen that worked for her. Not only was she sleeping throughout the night, her hot flashes were gone. “Thank goodness. Now that I don’t have to use sweat-proof makeup, my mascara doesn’t clump anymore.”

Palm Beach Central High School celebrated St. Baldrick’s Day on April 19 in the school gym.

The event raised money for children with cancer, and many students either got their heads shaved or donated their hair to Locks of Love. There was also entertainment from student groups, food and more.

Council Chooses Tennis Center Site The Wellington Tennis Center is getting a new home near the Village Walk community on Lyons Road. The decision divided Wellington Village Council members with Vice Mayor Howard Coates and Councilwoman Anne Gerwig dissenting. Wellington officials considered several locations before settling on the Village Walk site.

Councilman Matt Willhite said that his goal was to move tennis “while having the least impact on the most residents.”

Mayor Bob Margolis asked Wellington Tennis Center Director Tommy Cheatham to weigh in. “I think the tennis community would like to see a facility where we have more tennis courts than we do right now,” Cheatham said. If the facility had to move, Cheatham said his players would prefer to see a new site behind the Hampton Inn. But Willhite noted that many of the sites up for consideration are already used for other purposes. “I support relocating the tennis facility,” Willhite said. “I think in order to not disrupt any programs, and for the benefit of everyone, the Village Walk site is the best location.” Coates said he thought Village Walk was the least favorable option. He preferred that the tennis center stay put at its current site.

Coates also had concerns about the $5 million price tag to move the facility.

During public comment, tennis players asked to either keep the existing site or move it only to the site behind the Hampton Inn. No one spoke in favor of Village Walk. The council majority did not agree. “We have to move the tennis center to start the community center,” Margolis said. “I believe the Village Walk site is the best place. Once it’s built, it will be the gemstone for Wellington and its tennis players.”

Biz Hour Changes — The Wellington Village Council last month finalized the long-discussed changes to its hours of operations for businesses within 300 feet of residences. But last-minute changes divided council members, who

debated for more than an hour over requiring businesses to come before the council for hours beyond 2 a.m. and whether to hold professional offices to the same rules. “This is to protect our residents and be fair and balanced with our business community,” Councilman Matt Willhite said. The ordinance will now allow businesses to open at 5 a.m. and stay open until midnight with outdoor activity limited to between 6 a.m. and 11 p.m. Businesses have to apply for a permit and pay a $500 fee for an extension of hours, but there is a 60-day grace period on the fee. The decision to allow for extended hours was originally left to the village’s growth management director, but Willhite said he thought the council should have final approval in some cases. Vice Mayor Howard Coates also asked why professional offices were exempt. The exemption was made, Growth Management Director Stillings said, because staff didn’t think professional offices would generate enough noise to be a concern. Coates said the loophole could be exploited. Councilwoman Anne Gerwig noted that the council assured business owners that professional office space wouldn’t be affected. Willhite made a motion to remove the exemption for professional office space and to require businesses looking to operate beyond 2 a.m. to come before the council. It passed 3-2 with Coates and Gerwig opposed.

Senior Rides Expanded — Wellington expanded its senior transportation program last month, allowing senior citizens to catch a ride to more locations. “We’re removing some of the restrictions on where seniors can go,” Director of Community Services Nicole Evangelista said. “They can still only go within Wellington boundaries, but we’re not restricting them to certain places.” The program is open to Wellington residents 60 and older. Unique Wellington Rec Programming Offers Unexpected Summer Fun

No matter what your interest, Wellington’s Parks & Recreation Department has a plan to keep families and friends entertained throughout the long days and nights of summer. From day camps, aquatics and team sports to senior activities and movie nights, Wellington offers a range of programs designed to appeal to even summer’s most discriminating participants.

Parks & Recreation Director Bruce DeLaney heads a cast of managers and coordinators who bring training and passion to their respective programs.

From June through August, a plethora of events for families, teens, adults and seniors will run at the village’s various facilities: the Wellington Community Center, the Wellington Aquatics Complex, the Wellington Tennis Center, the Wellington Amphitheater and the Wellington Recreation Center at Village Park.

The rec center, long a hub of summertime activity, recently underwent a facelift.

“The addition that housed the second gymnasium was renovated,” DeLaney said. “That gave us an opportunity to secure the original gym that was only partly brick block. Now it’s all brick.”

In addition to the requisite team sports such as basketball, baseball and soccer, this year Wellington’s summer stars can delve deeper into interests that, before now, have not readily been catered to or thought of as typical summer camp fare.

Children ages 5 to 15 are welcome at Village Park’s all-day camp, where participants will enjoy arts & crafts, animal exhibits, magicians, movies, rock climbing and more. The camp 18

runs Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and campers can participate weekly or for the entire summer, June 10 through Aug. 16.

While the all-day camp is a popular and convenient option for many families, it is the specialty camps, which typically fill up well in advance, that offer some of the most exciting and innovative new programming.

“Besides all of our basics that we run every summer, this year we’ve expanded our volleyball and girls softball camps. We’re running three different camps for volleyball. We’ve seen an increase in participants in that program,” DeLaney said.

Among these specialty summer programs is Hapkido, a self-defense class where students from age 12 through adult will learn basic takedowns, kicks, strikes and disarming techniques while challenging their bodies and minds. Students can take advantage of this safe and practical setting as they learn a martial art.

The Hapkido classes require an annual membership with the International Hapkido Federation in addition to a $70 registration fee. Participants have three start dates to choose from: June 1, July 1 or Aug. 1. Each session runs for three to four weeks and meets

Mondays, Thursday and Saturdays at Village Park.

Another great choice for summer fun is the Kids Yoga program, a course that runs June 19 through Aug. 7 and again from Aug. 14 through Oct. 2 at the Wellington Community Center.

This ancient practice of physical and mental unity will have kids learning techniques such as visualization, selfcontrol and how to focus and relax, among its numerous physical benefits.

Strength, balance and flexibility are sure to improve as campers practice their poses. An alternative to more common youth athletic pursuits, yoga’s ability to relieve stress and work the body makes it a superb outlet for pentup summer energy. Kids Yoga is new to Wellington’s summer offerings and is likely to be a staple for years to come.

If you are searching for activities that cater to the artistically inclined, look no further than the “Dive Into Acting” or “Movie Spoofs” acting camps, both of which help campers develop basic improvisation and communication skills for those 7- to 13-year-olds who have been bitten by the acting bug.

Running June 17-20, “Dive Into Acting” focuses on basic theater skills and building collaborative projects. The program culminates in a finale for

participants and their families to enjoy.

“Movie Spoofs” runs July 15-18 and gives campers the opportunity to recreate scenes from their favorite funny films.

Kids and adults aren’t the only ones getting in on the summer fun. BrunchN-Bingo gives seniors the opportunity to socialize easily and affordably at the rate of $5 per day, which includes lunch and a bingo game and lasts from noon to 3 p.m. Seminars on health, wellness and elder law are also offered throughout the summer.

Seniors intrigued by these summer activities should check out the Wellington Seniors Club, a nonprofit organization focused on the social enjoyment and welfare of its members.

It hosts a variety of recreational events throughout the year. Members meet at the Wellington Community Center for recreational activities such as games of bridge and mah-jongg.

Activities in the gym or on the field are perfect to take advantage of summer sunshine, but when the days get longer and sunburns sting, it is the pool that everyone turns to for relief from the heat. Luckily, the Aquatics Complex offers programs and passes for every summer swim scenario. “We offer an array of passes and programs that are extremely affordable for the entire family,” Aquatics Supervisor Eric Juckett said.

If you are planning on wetting your toes only a few times, the Splash Pass offers 12 visits for the price of 10 at $50, $30 or $20 for adults, children and seniors, respectively.

These classes are only a small sampling of all that Wellington recreation has to offer this summer. More ideas to entertain the masses and keep cabin fever at bay include the Food Truck Invasion and the free Summer Movie Series.

The Food Truck Invasion invites visitors to sample everything from a Vietnamese banh mi to gourmet cupcakes. This moveable feast offers different delights from some of South Florida’s favorite restaurants on wheels. The food trucks meet the second and fourth Thursdays of each month from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. through August. It takes place at the Wellington Amphitheater, as does the movie series.

Be sure to check the schedule for movie times and titles, which run the gamut from Titanic to The Adventures of Tintin and Hugo.

Children’s swimming lessons are offered to kids ages 6 months through 13 years, and adult classes for those 14 or older. The Parent & Tot class teaches water acclimation for both baby and parent, while Adaptive Aquatics, a semiprivate class, is designed for children with physical limitations.

So, instead of dreading the summer heat, pack up your friends, family and floaties for a new spin on everyone’s favorite season. Maybe your ideal day consists of a morning at the pool, an afternoon of yoga and movie night under the stars. Iron Lion Fitness Studio Fundraiser Supports School For Autism Story and Photo by Jessica Gregoire

C

ombining fitness and fundraising has become a successful idea for Wellington’s Iron Lion Fitness Studio. Through collaboration with local businesses and assistance from volunteers, the studio raised thousands of dollars to support the Palm Beach School for Autism at its second annual Ryde-a-thon fundraiser April 7.

Owners Seth Kaufmann and Mike Bates have built a close relationship with the school through Gen Lane, one of their clients and school parent volunteer. “Gen is best friends with an instructor here and asked, when we first opened, if we wanted to do something to raise money for the school,” Kaufmann recalled.

The owners agreed, and enlisted the help of public relations professional and good friend Alexandra De Armas.

“I coordinated most of the event,” she said. “The food, raffle items, wrote the press release, and pretty much coordinated the media and instructors.”

Last year’s event, which also took place in April to mark Autism Awareness Month, raised more than $5,000, astonishing everyone involved. “We tried not to have any expectations,” Kaufmann said. “With good planning and hard work, it just happened.”

From then on, the collaboration between Iron Lion and the Palm Beach School for Autism grew. “We’ve built a really nice relationship with the school, and they’re nice people,” Kaufmann said. “We are just happy to do anything to help them out.”

A Handful Of Players Are Changing The Face Of The Sport

When Allie Azzaro of Wellington rode onto the field with her Titanium teammates at the Grand Champions Polo Club, Sunny Hale was overwhelmed with emotion.

The world’s top female polo player was watching history being made as the inaugural Junior WCT Invitational was held during the April 3-6 Women’s Championship Tournament (WCT), which Hale founded in 2005 and now represents the largest women’s polo tournament series in the world.

Women In Polo Sunny Hale

That pioneer spirit is in her blood.

Hale’s mother, Sue Sally Hale, broke American polo’s gender barrier in 1972 when she was the first woman to gain membership into the United States Polo Association, the sport’s national governing body, after playing polo disguised as a man in the 1950s and ’60s. The elder Hale died in 2003 at age 65, but her legacy lives on through her daughter.

“If you have any athletic inclination and like horses, you’re done for,” Hale said. “Once you get connected to polo, you’re addicted.”

Hale has been the world’s top female player for more than 20 years. She has competed with men at polo’s premier event, the U.S. Open, which she won.

Hale is the first and only U.S. woman to achieve a 5-goal handicap rating. She could ride before she could walk and played her first tournament, which her team won, when she was just 10 years old.

“These girls are the sport’s future,” Hale said. “This is truly the next generation of players, and to have their player-fathers bringing them is what I want to open the door for.”

In addition to playing on some of the best polo teams in the country at the highest levels, coaching and giving clinics, her passion now is to promote the WCT and junior tournaments throughout the world.

At the recent USPA meetings, a separate women’s rating system was approved for 2014 implementation, an historic vote spearheaded by Hale.

Caroline Anier France’s top female player, Anier has been playing polo for more than three decades. She made her Gay Polo League International Tournament debut in April in Wellington and was one of the most dominant players among the men and women.

Anier, along with Sue Sally Hale and her daughters Sunny and Stormie, won the first U.S. Women’s Open in 1990.

“In the beginning, the men didn’t accept women players much,” Anier said. “Sunny Hale’s mom went through it, and there were already a lot of women playing in America. In France, France’s Caroline Anier during April’s GPL tournament in Wellington.

Then again, old prejudices die hard.

“I’ve had some macho guys who hated it when I stole the ball away from them, but that still happens today,” Anier said with a laugh. “All my life it has been like that.”

Juan Bollini felt her wrath throughout the two-day GPL tournament at Grand Champions. “She is a tough, tough player,” Bollini said. “She is very aggressive and a very good rider. I had to come out with my best to try to beat her.”

Women In Polo Gillian Johnston The Coca-Cola team captain is playing the best polo of her career, which started at age 13. Because her entire family played polo, it was only natural Johnston would follow.

In 2002 at age 25, Johnston became the youngest padron to capture the U.S. Open. She has been playing high-goal polo since 1998.

Johnston and Melissa Ganzi were the only women competing in both the 20- and 26-goal tournaments during Wellington’s 2013 season. Johnston also plays polo in Sheridan and Big Horn, Wyo.; Aiken, S.C.; and Argentina.

Since then, she has worked tirelessly to promote polo through her philanthropy, work with the Polo Training Foundation and the National Museum of Polo & Hall of Fame, as well as playing 20- and 26-goal polo with her Piaget team, breeding and selling horses, and running her family’s Grand Champions Polo Club.

Now, Ganzi is paving the way in the sport for her daughter Riley and son Grant, both top juniors players.

Ganzi has been a pioneer for diversity in polo, hosting the Gay Polo League International Tournament, Women’s Championship Tournament and several junior tournaments at Grand Champions.

“It’s amazing and exciting that women are being recognized as legitimate polo players,” Ganzi said. “Sunny Hale and her mom really paved the way for women. I played with Sunny and Gillian in 2009, and we won the WCT. That was super-fun. I see Riley and her friends, whose parents also play polo, have role models and something to aspire to in polo.”

It’s a bittersweet time for Rabbi Stephen Pinsky, who is retiring this month as spiritual leader of Wellington’s Temple Beth Torah after 17 years of service. Along the way he has made lifelong connections while greatly expanding the thriving Jewish congregation.

Yet now, Pinsky is ready to step down and spend time with his wife Lisa, enjoying everything else his adopted hometown has to offer.

Pinsky developed his rabbinical drive after winning a school contest during his confirmation, as an adolescent growing up in New York City.

Pinksy arrived in July 1996 at Temple Beth Torah, a congregation founded in 1978 and affiliated with the Union for Reform Judaism. He got right to work, creating goals to increase the congregation’s numbers and renovate the synagogue. He succeeded in those goals, doubling the number of families, expanding the temple to include office space, remodeling the sanctuary and social hall, adding classrooms to the preschool, adding a bigger library and completing many other renovations.

“I was in the 10th grade, and the rabbi came into class and said, ‘For the conferment of the year, we have these beautiful sets of leather-bonded books, The History of the Jews,’” Pinsky recalled.

“When I got home, I told my parents I was going to win those books. They laughed because they knew I never took school work seriously.”

“It’s really like a whole new place,” Pinsky said. “In lots of ways, it has become the Jewish voice in the western communities.”

Pinsky has enjoyed making people feel welcome as soon as they walk through the door. “We want people to feel good about coming here,” he said. “We’ve made our services warmer and more participatory.”

Most importantly, Pinsky believes he has made congregants feel as though the temple is their home. “It has worked, and the Jewish community here has grown as well,” he said.

With determination and a newfound interest in his schooling, he did win, and the sweet victory came with an unexpected additional prize. “They announced that they were giving away, for the first time, full scholarships to a conclave of the Greater New York Federation of Youth Groups,” Pinsky said.

Already satisfied with his original prize, Pinsky initially did not want to participate in the weeklong end-ofsummer conclave in upstate New York.

“That entire summer was spent with my parents saying ‘you’re going’ and me saying ‘I’m not going’ — until the time came and they pushed me on the bus,” he smiled.

The experience at the conclave was

life-changing for Pinsky. “I was impressed by the music, spirituality, camaraderie and intensity of the Jewish experience, which I certainly never had before,” he said. “There were so many young rabbis there, and I was bowled over by what was happening.”

As soon as Pinsky returned home, he shocked his father with a life-changing announcement.

“He picked me up, and we were driving on the North Drive of Central Park. He asked me, ‘How was it?’ I replied, ‘I’m going to become a rabbi,’ and the car hit the curb because that was not at all what he expected me to do,” Pinsky said.

After that faithful revelation, he relentlessly worked toward achieving his goal of becoming a rabbi. He went on to receive a bachelor’s degree from Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, Pa. Pinsky then received his ordination at the New York school of the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in 1971. Later in life, he returned to Hebrew Union to earn his doctorate in 1996.

Pinsky’s first congregation, Temple Beth-El in Great Neck, N.Y., was a 1,400-family synagogue. He was first the assistant rabbi, and then moved up

to associate rabbi. “My children were born there, and it was a wonderful experience,” he recalled.

congregations in 14 states and three time zones. “I did a lot of traveling,” he said.

Pinsky later spent some time in New Jersey before finding himself in Minneapolis. “I was asked if I was interested in interviewing for Temple Israel in Minneapolis, which is one of the cathedral congregations in the country, with 2,100 families,” he said. “I did accept the position as associate rabbi, and then I became a senior rabbi there.”

Although Pinsky enjoyed the position, he began to miss rabbinical work with a congregation. “My love is the pulpit,” he said. “That’s when I came here in 1996.”

For five years, Pinsky served as Midwest regional director of the Union for Reform Judaism. “It was sort of a job I couldn’t turn down,” he said.

Pinsky chose Wellington to serve as the capstone of his religious career because of its unique, small-town feel. “It was the end of nowhere when I came here,” he said. “I thought it would be a nice place to work until I retired.”

Yet he arrived right at the start of the boom years, and the community has grown tremendously, Pinsky said.

“With the expansion of Wellington and all the communities around here, the Jewish community has also grown significantly,” he said.

Throughout his career and time at Temple Beth Torah, Pinsky has put a focus on being involved with interfaith activities and organizations. While in Minneapolis, he founded and was vice chairman of the Center for Victims of Torture. More recently, he served as co-chairman of the Palm Beach County Interfaith Clergy Coalition for nine years.

Pinsky believes it is his duty to help others. “Jews are called to participate in Tikkun Olam, which means repairing of the world,” he said. “I believe we are called upon to leave the world better than the way we found it, and a lot of the stuff I’ve done relates to that idea.”

For all Pinsky has done for the congregation and community, Temple Beth Torah celebrated Pinsky’s career with a special service at the temple on Friday, May 31, followed by a gala testimonial dinner and auction at the International Polo Club Palm Beach on Saturday, June 1.

Even as he retires, Pinsky will continue to stay active in the community and will serve as rabbi emeritus of Temple Beth Torah. “The congregation needs younger blood,” he said. “But I’ll still be around. I’m not leaving Wellington because I’ve become a ‘Wellingtonian,’ as they say.”

The temple will have an interim rabbi for a while as a search committee seeks to find the perfect person to fill the large vacancy left by Pinsky’s retirement. He hopes that Temple Beth Torah will continue to be the welcoming place that it is — “a place where people care for one another, and that will inspire our children, where people are served by their rabbi.”

IPC Wins Providencia Award After Successful 10th Season The International Polo Club Palm Beach’s 10th anniversary season was a success from start to finish — and that success even extended beyond the traditional winter polo season when IPC claimed the county’s top tourism honor in May.

In May, with the season complete, the Palm Beach County Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) awarded the prestigious 2013 Providencia Award to IPC, based on the club’s significant and substantial impact on Palm Beach County tourism.

The season kicked off in January on a perfect opening day when Ms. Perfect 10 herself, the still-smashing Bo Derek, tossed the first coin. She created just the kind of buzz that IPC was hoping would bring back loyal polo fans and attract new ones.

In other words, polo — and the International Polo Club, in particular — was being recognized, finally, as a big-time draw for visitors.

Record crowds turned out on that Sunday and the 15 to follow. Fans gleefully stomped divots into flat submission during halftime, sipping and socializing under blue skies as IPC served up the best polo on the planet.

IPC played host to the “triple crown” of American polo — the three highestrated polo tournaments on the continent: the USPA C.V. Whitney Cup, the Piaget USPA Gold Cup and the USPA Maserati 109th U.S. Open Polo Championship.

The action thrilled fans, thanks in no small part to the world-class skill level of the players. All eight of the world’s 10-goal players, the elite of the elite, brought their talents to Wellington this season.

Could things get any better? Well, yes.

“Our 10th anniversary season broke all records,” IPC President John Wash said. “Winning the Providencia Award makes the season all the more perfect.

We thank everyone for their support.”

Across the polo world, IPC is considered to be the finest, most wellequipped polo facility. Spectators come from around the globe, representing numerous countries in Europe and South America, as well as South Africa, Canada and the United States, and exceed 150,000 annually.

Many of the spectators stay in Palm Beach County for all or part of the winter polo season.

Fittingly, the honor was awarded to Wash before a sellout crowd of tourism and hospitality leaders during the annual Tourism Day luncheon. The luncheon is part of National Travel & Tourism Week, a campaign of the U.S. Travel Association aimed at generating

awareness of the economic importance of travel and tourism.

The CVB’s Providencia Committee chose the International Polo Club as one of three finalists. This year’s runners-up included the Honda Classic and Lynn University, host of one of the 2012 presidential debates.

Other nominees included the Delray Beach Marketing Cooperative, the Palm Beach International Boat Show, Maltz Jupiter Theatre, Equestrian Sport Productions CEO Mark Bellissimo, the Palm Beach Food & Wine Festival and the Palm Beach International Raceway.

“The Providencia Award is Palm Beach County’s most important symbol of recognition for the local tourism industry,” CVB President & CEO Jorge Pesquera said at the awards luncheon.

“In 2013, Palm Beach County’s tourism industry will generate more than $5 billion for the local economy, recording triple growth over the past three decades. It is a truly incredible sign of our industry’s resilience that we have made a full recovery after some challenging economic times, and are close to our all-time peaks in virtually every tourism performance category.”

At 20/Twenty Eyecare, owner and optometrist Dr. Helen Abdal seeks to give all her patients the personalized care and attention they deserve. “We don’t do 10-minute or 15-minute exams,” she said. “We take our time with all our patients.

Patients will also notice that the selection of frames is different from those at other eye care firms. “One of the biggest things for me was to bring in lines that nobody else has,” Abdal said. “For example, we have a line that no one else in Florida carries. It’s for women who have smaller faces.”

Patients receive a thorough eye-health examination, which includes checks for glaucoma, macular degeneration and retinal bleeding. “We have instruments

like the retinal camera that takes an amazing picture of the back part of the eye,” she said. “That sets us apart from a lot of other places.”

Abdal, who opened her new Wellington location in January, also takes the time to explain what’s going on. “I can’t tell you how many patients have left here saying this was the most thorough exam they’ve ever had,” she said. “As we’re going through the exam, I explain every test I’m doing.”

Along the way, she checks for colorblindness, explaining that many people don’t even realize they are colorblind. She also fits contact lenses, including those for children, carefully explaining to them what to do to get the lenses in and out of their eyes. “It comes back to me loving what I do, doing it since I was 18 as a technician, but also realizing as a first-time fit on a child, it’s very difficult for them to get those contact lenses in,” Abdal said.

She also specializes in fitting progressive-vision contact lenses. “I know a lot about that field,” Abdal said.

“We have many happy patients who come through.”

There are three ways of fitting contacts for patients who require multiple-vision lenses. The first two — wearing contacts for distance and using traditional reading glasses for up-close needs or fitting one eye with contacts for distance and one eye for up close — pose significant issues for people.

That is why progressive contact lenses are preferred, Abdal said.

Progressive contacts have come a long

way in recent years, she noted.

Nevertheless, they are avoided by some optometrists because of the additional time and attention required for a good result. “They’re soft lenses, and they give you that distance, intermediate and up close,” Abdal explained, noting that progressives are growing rapidly in popularity.

As part of her procedure, Abdal gives patients contact lenses to try out at home. “Then you come back and let me know which ones work out,” she said. “What might work out perfectly in my little exam room might not work out perfectly in your everyday life.”

Abdal carries progressive lens options that some optometric offices do not offer. “I can offer the top-of-the-line progressives,” she said, explaining that she has options for patients who might have tried them before with bad results.

“If they hate them, I’ll take care of it and put them back in a single-vision, bifocal or whatever they want, but I would say nine times out of 10, patients love our progressives.”

Roger Plevin was a stockbroker in New York when he and his wife, Andrea, first started coming to Florida regularly. Their parents were aging, and they wanted to keep in touch. Trips to visit them in Coral Springs became more frequent just as the Plevins’ patience with harsh Northern winters was giving out.

“I was sick of cold, dreary winters and a three-hour commute,” Plevin recalled. “We were looking for a home in Coral Springs/Parkland when someone told us of a lovely area called Wellington. We decided to take a drive and check it out. We got a very good vibe from Wellington. It felt homey and comfortable, and we recognized that the pricing of the homes made them a better value than those in Broward County. We also liked the green space and the fact that it had A-rated schools for our 9-year-old.”

The Plevins moved to Wellington’s Grand Isles community in 2001, and living there was what prompted a switch to a career in real estate. “I observed the vast changes that Wellington was going through in 2001 and 2002. The Mall at Wellington Green was completed and State Road 7 was starting to expand,” Plevin said. “I began noticing rooftops replacing trees on the east side of Wellington, and I would joke with my New York friends that they build a house here faster than they fill a pothole in New York. So I decided not to watch it happen but to become a participant in the growth.”

His wife, who owns Wellington-based Above and Beyond Party Décor, was supportive of the career change and, by 2003, Plevin had his real-estate license.

“I jumped into the rapid growth of real-estate interest in this marketplace,” said Plevin, who works with Realty Elite: The Palm Beaches. “In 2004, Money magazine listed Wellington as the seventh-fastest growth city in the nation. I became a Realtor, and then the bubble burst. But I remained on a professional track with the focus of trying to help people in their great transition in life, whether selling or buying real estate.”

Coach Enjoys Teaching Kids About Football, Teamwork & Life

Not all volunteering takes place indoors. Sometimes, the act of giving your time and energy to others goes on between the white lines of a football field, amid the grunts, groans, victories and defeats of kids trying hard to be the best they can be.

Some of those kids are guided by the expertise and concern of Mike Schmickle, who has been a major player in the Western Communities Football League for the past eight seasons. Schmickle is the June nominee for Wellington The Magazine’s Volunteer of the Year Award.

A former high school athlete himself, the Wellington resident knows firsthand the benefits inherent in competition and teamwork and wanted to pass his knowledge along to the young football players here in the western communities.

Schmickle can thank his son for his WCFL coaching experience.

“My son Ben played quarterback in the WCFL for head coach and board member Mark Jolly in 2007,” Schmickle recalled. “Mark is a great coach, and I saw from the sidelines how much fun he and the other coaches were having teaching the boys about football, teamwork and life. Having played football, baseball and basketball in high school, I was interested in getting back on the field, spending more time with my son and having fun with the other coaches.”

assistant coach the following season, Schmickle jumped at the chance.

“I had previously volunteered as a coach in baseball, basketball and soccer in Wellington, but football was my real passion,” he said. “When Mark asked, I was more than happy to join him. That next season I had a great time coaching with him. He truly showed me what volunteering is about. The boys on the team had a lot of fun, and I realized how much of a positive influence a coach could be in their lives.”

Schmickle made the jump to head coach in 2009. After a year as an assistant coach, Mike Pignato, then WCFL president, invited him to take the reins of his own team.

“I learned a lot from Mike and fellow board member Gus Pasquale that year,” Schmickle said. “These two men, along with all the other tireless volunteers on the WCFL board, were a real inspiration to me. I don’t know if people realize the countless hours that the volunteers put into the league. Many do not even have kids playing. They simply volunteer because they love football, love Wellington and love helping others.”

Schmickle wears many hats at the WCFL. “In addition to being a head coach, I have helped out with

registration, equipment checkout, equipment check-in, etc,” Schmickle said. “In addition, I was nominated to be head coach of the all-star team this past fall. Most of my time has been involved with scheduling the hundreds of regular-season and playoff games each year. With the numerous rainouts each year, it’s pretty difficult rescheduling games for hundreds of families on a moment’s notice.”

Schmickle’s journey to Wellington began in Iowa, where he grew up. He graduated from the University of Northern Iowa with an accounting degree and, after taking a job in Minneapolis, Schmickle and his family — wife Theresa, daughter Taylor and son Ben — moved to Wellington in 1998. Since 2005, he has been a partner at Palm Beach Capital, a private equity firm.

Once the Schmickles found Wellington, they knew they would wind up living here.

“We looked at several areas in Palm Beach County. However, moving here from the Midwest, Wellington just felt more like home,” he said.

“Wellington has changed so much in the 15 years we’ve lived here.

Before the mall opened, we would spend most of our time traveling to West Palm for things to do. Now,

there are so many restaurants, shopping and activities right here in Wellington that we rarely leave. We love the parks and recreation opportunities that the village has to offer. Our kids have participated in numerous activities. We have made many friends through the kids’ activities and sports.”

So, what the family thought would be a short-term stopover turned out to be something more.

“We originally thought that we’d live in Wellington and South Florida for only a couple of years. However, we love it so much that not only have we stayed, it has now become home,” Schmickle said.

Coaching in the WCFL is not Schmickle’s first taste of volunteerism, though.

“Prior to my involvement with the league, I was involved as a board member of Junior Achievement of the Palm Beaches, helping teach kids about entrepreneurship,” he said.

“Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of coaching with many great volunteers, and each has become a lifelong friend,” Schmickle said. “Mike Ferraro, Rick Sherrod, Bruce Toler,

As does any good leader, Schmickle knows that he’s only as good as the coaches he has surrounded himself with. The fact that they’ve become more than professional acquaintances has made volunteering that much sweeter.

For those who may be considering volunteering in sports, Schmickle offers some advice.

“Communication and patience are keys to being a successful volunteer,” he said. “The coaching is the easy part. I have found that if you err on the over-communicating side of things, parents are better informed and have a better experience.”

Once a person becomes a volunteer, Schmickle believes a pattern is set that will reverberate for years to come — if not a lifetime.

“I truly believe in paying it forward,” he said. “If, as volunteers, we are able to positively affect one child’s life, I have no doubt that one day that child will become a volunteer and positively affect another’s life as well.”

Located in the Wellington Marketplace, the “indoor tiki bar” is set to the speed of summer: a laid-back environment and a cool drink in your hand.

“I’d been in the restaurant business for more than 10 years as a bartender and manager,” owner Jon Nolli said. “I had always wanted to have my own place.”

JoJo’s has been a staple in Wellington for five years now and is known for its good food, great atmosphere and late hours. The restaurant is open from 3 p.m. to 2 a.m. during the week, and until 3 a.m. on weekends, with live entertainment Saturday nights.

“I used to run a card game at my house a couple of days a week,” Nolli said. “I needed something to hold the drinks, so we got the monkey and named him JoJo.” The atmosphere is similar to a sports bar — family friendly, with large booths and tables to sit at. Or, you can sit at the large bar, which serves as a centerpiece to the room.

Several televisions over the bar broadcast the latest sports games, and the back of the restaurant has a small arcade as well as pool tables.

In addition to the typical brews, JoJo’s boasts a large selection of craft beers both on draft and in the bottle or can.

Nolli was a pioneer in bringing the concept to Wellington.

It’s the details and the décor that make JoJo’s stand out — from the actual thatch roof over one of the dining areas, to sea-themed wall décor and hand-made wooden mural. There are also quirky fixtures, like a live lobster claw game, where you can win your dinner.

“It had always been the same 10 beers on tap,” Nolli said. “We brought in craft brews and now have 20 beers on tap, bringing in a large variety from different breweries. It took a while for

“We serve a full menu from open to close,” Nolli said. “Truthfully, we sell more food after 9 p.m. than we do before. A lot of the people who come out are just getting off of work and want to get some food before they go home.”

The restaurant is named for JoJo the monkey, who sits at the front of the house to welcome guests.

“I’d been going to a chain restaurant by my house for seven years,” Nolli said. “I pretty much ate the same thing every day, sat at the same place at the bar, and no one knew my name or what I liked to eat. We want our guests to feel welcome.”

One signature of the menu is its impressive abundance of fresh seafood.

“My background is in seafood,” Nolli said. “Every restaurant I’d ever worked in had a raw bar, and there wasn’t a place in Wellington that had oysters, clams and shrimp the way we do it.

Everything is shucked to order” Every weekday from 3 to 6 p.m., JoJo’s features its happy hour with drink specials and 50 cent raw oysters, clams, shrimp, and also their famous chicken wings.

“It has really picked up,” Nolli said.

“At first we’d go through about two bushels of oysters a week, and now we’re going through 12 to 15 bushels.”

At JoJo’s, you can also count on the freshest fish, brought in daily. But it’s not just seafood — you can choose from soups and salads to burgers and barbecue.

“We’ve got everything from hand-cut steaks to burgers and wings,” Nolli said. “We hand make just about everything. Most of our sauces are made in house; even our fried mozzarella is hand-breaded. All our seafood is fresh and cooked to order.”

And steak lovers have it particularly good.

“On Sundays, we grill outside and have a pick your own steak night,” Nolli said. “We put out a variety of cuts from eight ounces to 32 ounces of New York strip and rib eye and sell it for $1 an ounce.”

Though you’re bound to eat well no matter what you choose, JoJo’s smoked Monkey Wings ($5.95-$12.95) are a great place to start. “We smoke them, then grill them and toss them in a chipotle barbecue sauce,” Nolli explained.

The wings are flavorful with a sweet and savory taste and a slow-burning heat underneath, giving you a bit of fire without being overpowering. If you’re not into smoked wings, you can get yours drenched in sauce from “mild” to “stupid hot” or in garlic, honey garlic, raspberry, “BB-Q” and teriyaki sauces.

Another great starter is the New Orleans BBQ Shrimp ($11.95), a ragin’ Cajun dish of sautéed fresh

shrimp in a blend of garlic, butter, Worcestershire sauce and herbs, all served in a fresh bread bowl.

For fans of the raw bar, you can’t go wrong with oysters on the half shell at market price. You can order them by the dozen or half dozen, and they are simply delicious. Shoot one down with some horseradish or cocktail sauce — or try them all on their own. They are so fresh that the flavor shines through.

Rediscover Lake Worth And Celebrate The City’s Centennial

The celebrations began last November and will continue through this year’s Fourth of July festivities, when the city hosts its Centennial All-Town Celebration, complete with downtown events, fireworks and a light show.

Rediscover all of the businesses and restaurants while strolling on Lake Worth and Lucerne avenues. Then, come down to the pier where visitors can experience the newly renovated Lake Worth Casino complex with its 3,000-square-foot oceanfront ballroom, complete with a pool — perfect to host any event.

After Henry Flagler extended his rail line in 1896, the city now known as Lake Worth became accessible to area settlers. It was not long before they discovered rich farmland and the stunning Atlantic Ocean, making it an ideal seaside locale for families and businesses to call their own.

As more people migrated to the area, homes, restaurants, municipal buildings and houses of worship were constructed to accommodate a growing population. By the early 1920s, the city had constructed a city hall, fire station, jail and library.

Lake Worth High School, too, was dedicated during this time.

In more recent years, Lake Worth’s downtown area has experienced a cultural renaissance, enriching the former “Jewel of South Florida” with all of the historic and cultural charm of years past. Now in its 100th year, Lake Worth is celebrating its centurylong path to becoming a cultural asset, ripe for exploration by tourists and residents alike.

Join in on the festivities like Evening on the Avenues, a free family-friendly party that takes place downtown every first and third Friday of the month or the Taste History Culinary Tours provided by the Museum of Lifestyle & Fashion History.

Want to explore the City of Lake Worth and help fundraise for a worthy cause? Lake Worth Bike Night takes place every Thursday evening from 7 to 10 p.m. to support the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation amidst music, food and fun. Admission is free and the event offers bikers a chance to tour the downtown area in an organized ride.

However you choose to celebrate Lake Worth’s centennial year, the city has plenty of festivities to take part in — all of them one hundred years in the making.

Earth Day — The community celebrated Earth Day on Sunday, April 21 at the Wellington Amphitheater. Guests enjoyed vendors selling ecofriendly products and giving away free samples. Participants also planted a pigeon plum tree and took home seedlings of live oak and red maple trees. Art Society Scholars — The Wellington Art Society held a scholarship presentation Wednesday, May 8 at the Wellington Community Center.

Five local art students each received $1,000 to further their art studies at the college level.
