UPDATE ON K I S U M U

Kisumu, which literally means a place of barter trade "sumo" and officially known as Kisumu City, is the Kenyan inland port city on Lake Victoria and the capital city of Kisumu County, Kenya. The city presently has a population of 344,487. It is now the third largest city in Kenya after the capital, Nairobi, and the coastal city of Mombasa. Kisumu is the principal city of western Kenya, the immediate former capital of Nyanza Province, the headquarters of Kisumu County and the proposed headquarters of the Lake Region Economic Block, which is a conglomeration of 15 counties in Western Kenya.
Cheltenham historically has been known to cater for the local, national and an international audience This is not only the community that live here but also in terms of the businesses and organisations located in the town.
Golden Valley Development website states that 'the development in Cheltenham will create a vibrant pioneering Garden Community integrating hi-tech business, residential and leisure uses At its heart will be the National Cyber Innovation Centre, the UK home of the cyber, digital and creative sectors arising from Cheltenham’s international reputation for leadership in cyber innovation'
This development means that Cheltenham as a town has the capacity and perfect infrastructure to build a partnership with Kisumu focusing on cyber, digital and tech for empowerment of women, young people and schools
This update sets out to anyone interested in getting involved with any of the projects to be delivered at the structural level, to have a better understanding of the type of cyber, IT and tech partnership projects that Cheltenham would be well positioned to develop with Kisumu. It takes account of the changing face of Kisumu from a town status to a city
Kisumu's economy is now based on agriculture, manufacturing, solar energy, transportation links by Air, land and Lake Victoria, logistics, oil, tourism, innovation, communication etc. All these infrastructures have been developed and most have been operational for some time The city governing model has also changed and is now led by Governors, the executive, including women representatives through the County government of Kisumu.
The partnership as discussed needs to be of mutual understanding that listens, identifies and work equitably with one another. It means that both regions can share their expertise and opportunities, in effecting change It brings great value to problem solving and developing, long lasting impactful projects that are empowering and futuristic I believe that the best time to start discussing these opportunities effectively, is with both parties in the same space and having face to face conversations.
