At Grandview Children’s Centre we strive every day to create bright futures for children and youth with special needs and their families in Durham Region. To deliver the best possible experience for those who depend on us, we continuously “scan and plan.” In turn our programs and services remain current, relevant and ultimately transformative.

Our dedicated Grandview staff and volunteers continuously collaborate with families, organizations and community agencies to create life-changing impact for thousands of kids each year.

At Grandview we seek nothing short of excellence. It’s what we do. We are committed to evaluating our performance today and tomorrow. We welcome you to do the same.

Our annual report offers a culmination of our steadfast performance and meaningful impact achieved over the past year. Equally exciting, it provides an advance preview into new accomplishments we are working toward in the future.

Last year alone, our expert Paediatric team conducted over 61,000 appointments to serve 5,600 families. Through our new location at S.A. Cawker Public School in Port Perry, we expanded local service options to North Durham families. Our Grandview medical team also grew to three full-time developmental paediatricians and over 21 visiting consultants, creating local access to specialized clinics and supports.

We are anticipating the implementation details of The Ontario Special Needs Strategy.

Children and youth with special needs and their families can expect enhancements to service continuity and overall service and support experience. We are optimistic that the significant planning of the past two years will meet the expectations and needs of families.

In November 2015, we were thrilled to receive a donation of a 5.6 acre parcel of land from the Town of Ajax to house the new Grandview headquarters. This is a significant milestone along the path of the Capital Build approval process.

Like every child in Ontario, Grandview Kids deserve therapeutic, purpose built, quality space. We urgently need to grow our facilities in Durham Region and are not afraid to speak up for it. We’ve persistently communicated our need for the provincial government to approve our Capital Build. The last hurdle is the announcement.

Despite our challenges, we have much to celebrate. We thank the Grandview Children’s Foundation for their diligent work. We are grateful for the generous support and donations from many community friends that provides greater access for more families.

As always, we are inspired by the ongoing determination and success of those we serve. For 63 years the paediatric experts at Grandview have delivered impact and excellence. We plan on continuing that tradition for an exciting today and unlimited tomorrow.

Clinical Services This year, Clinical Services continued to press the “up” button to further improve the quality and quantity of service to our Grandview Kids and their families. We streamlined operations, served more children than ever before and garnered successful results for our kids and community.

We significantly decreased wait time for initial assessments and first interventions within our Preschool Speech and Language Program. Enhancements included orientation sessions for families, and adjustments to scheduling and documentation processes.

Grandview expanded our team to include behaviour consultants and behaviour therapists following additional funding to the Durham Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA)-Based Services and Supports for Children and Youth with Autism. Alongside our Durham service-provider partners, Lake Ridge Community Support Services, and Resources for Exceptional Children and Youth-Durham Region, we proudly exceeded our target for the number of children serviced.

The Measure of Processes of Care conducted by CanChild, a research and educational centre, indicated high scores for Durham ABA based services. Gratifyingly, the survey results also revealed that parents believe Grandview and our partner agencies are succeeding in providing a family-centred environment.

Our Informed Practice and Outcomes Committee approved a sensory processing-based intervention designed to help children function the best they can given their sensory processing abilities. We also launched Grandview’s Hip Surveillance Program to provide early detection of changes in the hip joint of children with cerebral palsy which allows better care planning.

Recognition of Grandview Excellence At Grandview we learn and grow every step of the way with the kids and families we serve. The journey taken together informs our practice, and improves their experience and outcomes. We don’t just talk the talk. We walk the same challenging walk alongside our kids and families.

Our second annual Staff Interprofessional Learning and Development Day proved it. The event focused on family-centred care and emphasized the critical role of families as a key part of the interprofessional team.

Additionally, Grandview extended its reach into the community and the world to go above and beyond in many ways.

Grandview staff guided The University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) engineering students on developing simple switch inputs to access electric devices. Meanwhile, one of our physiotherapists co-presented a critical CanChild webinar on incorporating the 5Fs (International Classification of Function) language with emphasis on participating versus disability and has created a tool to help our team bring this to life.

Grandview’s co-presentation on a Hip Surveillance Protocol at the 2016 Ontario Association of Children’s Rehabilitation Services (OACRS) conference helped to move the agenda forward on a possible provincial strategy.

We also embarked on our first international partnership with a dedicated group of Canadian administrators and therapists working with Dzherelo Children’s Rehabilitation Centre in Ukraine. The Ukranian team visited Grandview to study our programs, administrative structures and supports. We are very excited to be part of the growing success of a twin centre.

Developing and Enhancing Partnerships At Grandview we know we can’t do it alone. As with any family, we’re stronger when we work together. We depend on local school boards and community partners who are as dedicated to serving our kids and families as we are. Together we provide outstanding streamlined, multi-disciplinary care.

Thanks to our partnership with the Durham District School Board we are proud of our new presence at S.A. Cawker Public School in Port Perry. The amalgamation of Grandview’s two north sites provides inter-professional supports and expanded services including medical and audiology services, group interventions and workshops under one roof. Now families can access reinforced, cohesive services closer to home.

Other partnership initiatives include: Establishing an Integrated Service Planning process with Infant and Child Development Services Durham.

Formalizing an agreement to provide a physiotherapist and speech-language pathologist to Neonatal Follow-Up Clinic (FUNN Clinic) at Lakeridge Health.

Participating in a provincial spinal cord injury project with Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation and other children’s treatment centres (CTCs) to provide much-needed service to children in their home community.

Providing service and support to 357 children in licensed child care centres through our Preschool Outreach Program funded by the Regional Municipality of Durham.

Grandview is committed to building on the strengths of our community partnerships and bringing new, expanded services to our Grandview Kids and their families.

Medical Services OWEN

As we celebrate “the best year ever,” we are incredibly proud to welcome two new developmental paediatricians to our team.

Dr. Abby Siapno is a former physiotherapist born in the Philippines who completed her Pediatric Residency at McMaster University and her Developmental Paediatrics Fellowship at the University of Toronto.

“Dr. Abby” works in our Ajax office full-time and brings a wealth of experience with a strong emphasis on inter-disciplinary collaboration and family-centred care. She joins our Informed Practice and Outcomes Committee to provide leadership in critical appraisal and project management. Aligning with a key provincial initiative, she has reviewed assessment and management of children with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder. Dr. Siapno has expertise in pharmacology for kids with autism and is presenting at the International Conference on Autism.

JUSTINE

Dr. Shannon Knights joins Dr. Hunt at our Oshawa headquarters. She graduated from Developmental Paediatrics at the University of Toronto and trained at both SickKids and Queens University. Performing at the top of her class at all levels of education, her strong record of academic excellence and accolades are reflected in her clinical talents.

Dr. Knights joins our Research Committee with a great deal of experience in research. She worked with Holland Bloorview on a variety of projects on quality of life for children with cerebral palsy. She is an incredible contributor of knowledge and experience to Grandview Kids.

MATTHEW

As we know very well, early diagnosis is essential. Even more so in light of incoming changes to Ontario’s Autism program. Thanks to these staff enhancements, Grandview Kids Medical Services has decreased average wait times from 254 to 120 days.

Additionally our clinic work continues to grow and provide high quality service in the areas of our CARE (Children’s Activity and Responsible Eating) program, optometry, orthopedics, spasticity management and orthotics.

Unfortunately, 2016 marks the end of Grandview’s ability to provide psychoeducational assessment for children with special needs. Due to funding limitations this service will not continue. We are relentlessly pursuing options to renew this key service.

Our Paediatric Associate Model is gaining provincial and national attention. We have accepted four candidates as Grandview Associates in our community, and look forward to formally launching this program this coming year. Grandview is now hosting a Community Paediatricians Mental Health Advocacy group consisting of nearly 20 pediatricians, paediatric psychiatrists, and children’s psychologists.

All have a strong interest and focus on children’s mental health, and are active members of the Durham community. Grandview Kids has supported this endeavour as a key provider of service for children under 12, and look forward to advancing this partnership for to serve the many needs of the children of our region.

Collaborative Research This year transformation, expertise, ingenuity and inspiration nurtured new research development and innovation excellence at Grandview.

The Research team has transformed. It now includes more front line staff and focuses on critical appraisal skills for all clinicians. We are thrilled to welcome our first parent to our committee who brings great expertise and interest in advancing quality science in our field.

Grandview’s progress toward a formal research strategy to guide our clinicians, management team and Board is underway. We look forward to hosting our first ever Research Day in November 2016 with Dr. Peter Rosenbaum from CanChild as our keynote speaker.

Grandview continues to collaborate and recruit for many projects with UOIT Health Sciences and Engineering. The highlight was the Engineering showcase of accessible adaptions inspired by Grandview Kids!

CP-Net continues as Grandview’s largest research project.

Grandview is a key collaborator in creating a database that will allow the CP-Net team to extract key pieces of information to yield clues to the underlying causes of cerebral palsy and best treatments. Grandview is the top recruitment site for a non-university affiliated centre. We are excited to be in this position and sincerely thank our Grandview families for their trust and commitment to helping other families with cerebral palsy.

Therapeutic Recreation As the name implies, Therapeutic Recreation infiltrates fun into our vital work at Grandview. Whether you find us swimming at the pool, meeting new friends at Little Critter Camp or having a blast at the local playground—it’s everybody in!

Through participation and inclusion in recreation and leisure, Therapeutic Recreation offers opportunities and support to children and youth to develop and maintain skills, knowledge and behaviours. Therapeutic Recreation focuses on physical literacy, creativity, self-expression, confidence building and group participation skills. Additionally, leisure education creates increased participation in community-based recreation activities.

Over 2,000 hours of Therapeutic Recreation were offered in 2015/2016 with 428 clients participating. 74% of these clients exceeded their goals.

97% of clients attending group readiness groups exceeded their goals.

Therapeutic Recreation continues to partner with the Town of Ajax, Town of Whitby, City of Oshawa and the Pickering Soccer Club to offer community-based programs for children and youth with special needs.

Therapeutic Recreation partners with social work, physiotherapy and occupational therapy teams to offer interprofessional groups.

Therapeutic Recreation provides assistance with accessing funding to participate in recreation programs.

Our Family Advisory Committee Our devoted Grandview parents are instrumental, expert advisors. Their kids are why we give our best every day.

After being revitalized in 2014, Grandview’s Family Advisory Committee (FAC) continued to grow in 2015, expanding to 15 members and extending its reach to each one of our sites across Durham Region.

The FAC acts as a resource to the Centre’s Board of Trustees and the Executive Director, enabling families to have a voice regarding strategic decisions. The FAC provided input on proposed changes to the Sensory Integration Program and developed an impending shoe exchange program with Centre staff to make quality shoes accessible for clients wearing orthotics.

In 2015/2016, the FAC offered several opportunities for families of Grandview Kids to network, including a fun family outing to the zoo, a family picnic, Fun Fall Festival with accessible trick or treating, and the annual Sensory Santa event.

In 2015, a subcommittee of the FAC, known as the Parent Task Force, continued to promote OurGrandview.ca, an online advocacy campaign. The Parent Task Force attended community events and spoke with local politicians to raise community awareness of Grandview’s need for a new building.

Invested and committed, Grandview staff, volunteers and families are moving forward together to build a strong community and vibrant future.

OUR FOUNDATION

Every day our Grandview Kids and Grandview Families share compelling stories of trials and triumph, of hope and success. This year in particular, their stories inspired action. Individuals, businesses, community organizations and groups stepped up to donate, run events and give what they could to raise funds and build awareness about our Kids.

Together, we met the financial targets of Grandview Children’s Centre and Campbell Children’s School. We also reached 70 per cent of our $10 million capital goal for a new building in Ajax that will enrich our locations across the Region and further serve those who need us.

We thank our partners for their vital donations. Through our partners’ generosity, the supports available within our 10 core programs and Campbell Children’s School are a reality. Gratefully, our Kids and families are able to: • Work on verbal and non-verbal communication.

• Find ways to be mobile.

• Embrace physiotherapy and put it into action at our recreation camps.

• Depend on our social work programs and other critical resources.

• Use our specialized supports for kids on the autism spectrum.

• Access our medical services and participate in our muscle tone clinics and orthopaedic clinics.

• Discover real-life solutions to use when returning to a traditional school setting after Grandview.

Here are some of the many other special ways our community partners made a difference: • TD Bank fuelled our literacy program and the capital campaign for our new building.

• The Town of Ajax donated land for our new building.

• The Oshawa Generals provided a thrilling puck drop experience for our Kids.

• The Smilezone Foundation transformed our waiting area into an amazing play zone.

• The Bank of Montreal supported our speech program.

• Meineke supported our first 3-on-3 Ball Hockey Tournament that highlighted ALL abilities.

• Intact Insurance made it possible for our teens to interact at camp.

• Scotiabank provided a safe place for families to connect and share.

• The Baagwating Community Association brought us the amazing muscle tone clinic to help kids with cerebral palsy, to run, walk and play sports with less pain.

We are thrilled to report that all of our signature events had record participation and exceeded fundraising goals: • Golf Fore Grandview Kids raised more than $65,000.

• RUN AJAX generated close to $63,000.

• The first annual Grand Gala raised almost $30,000 with the assistance of our incredible friend and this year’s Founding Sponsor, Manufacturing & Technology Centre (MTC).

We want to thank event organizers, participants and all who continue to support the Foundation. We recognize businesses and groups that raised awareness and helped us realize our targets. Some of them being: Autofest (Motor City Car Club, Oshawa West Lions Club, North Oshawa Lions Club), the HMA golf tournament, McHappy Day at McDonald’s Ajax and Whitby, the Scotiabank Charity Golf Tournament, Durham Divas and the Harley Owners Group through their Hearts of Gold Ride.

In February 2016 Brigitte Tschinkel assumed the role of Executive Director of Development. Having worked with the Foundation for over 7 years, Brigitte will lead with a unique mix of experience, enthusiasm and vision.

The ability of the Grandview Children’s Foundation to help Grandview Kids and Grandview Families depends on individual donors, volunteers, Centre staff, Board members, community organizations, business leaders, parents and families. We hope that you will continue to support us.

Over 5,600 Grandview Kids need your help. So do 2,600 other kids who need to be at Grandview.
