This schedule is full of opportunities to reconnect with old friends and classmates at the Clambake, the Alumni Lunch on Saturday, or your Class Dinner. You will get an extraordinary glimpse into the work our esteemed faculty is doing here through our Faculty Conversations, which will be given by Alan Henrikson, Michele Malvesti, Eileen Babbitt, Alex de Waal, Bridget Conley-Zilkic, and me. This year, at the suggestion of an alumna, we are introducing a Book Showcase to highlight recent works by alumni and faculty. And you will get an opportunity to share in the joy of Class Day with Fletcher’s Class of 2016, which will be highlighted by a Fletcher greeting from alumna Susan Livingston, F81, and Keynote Speaker, Arianna Huffington, editor-in-chief of the Huffington Post. Please walk around and notice how much we’ve grown, but how personal Fletcher still feels.

As dean of The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, my goal is to challenge our students, faculty, and staff “To Know the World.” As alumni, you bring to us a wonderful perspective on how you’ve come to know the world since your days here in Medford.

BIOS

Eileen F. Babbitt, Ph.D., is professor of The New International Conflict Human Security Management Practice Agenda at Fletcher and director of the Institute for Human Security at The Fletcher School. Her research interests include the role of Track 2 in peace processes, reconciliation in identity-based conflicts, and the participation of civil society in governance. Her 25-plus years of practice as a facilitator, trainer, and mediation specialist has included work in the Middle East, the Balkans, and with the United Nations (UNDP, UNHCR, UNAMI), U.S. government agencies (USAID, U.S. Department of State), regional intergovernmental organizations (African Union, OSCE), and international and local NGOs. Professor Babbitt’s latest publications include “The Pragmatics of Peace with Justice: The Challenge of Integrating Mediation and Human Rights,” (2014) in Coleman, Deutsch, and Marcus (eds), The Handbook of Conflict Resolution: Theory and Practice, Third Edition; and “Mediation and the Prevention of Mass Atrocities,” (2014) in Serrano and Weiss (eds), The International Politics of Human Rights: Rallying to the R2P Cause? Professor Babbitt holds a master’s degree in public policy from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University and a Ph.D. from MIT.

BRIDGET CONLEYZILKIC

Bridget Conley-Zilkic is the research director of the World Peace Foundation War, Mass (WPF) and assistant Atrocities and Famine: Is There research professor at The an End in Sight?

Fletcher School. At WPF, she is the lead researcher on the Mass Atrocities program, and editor of How Mass Atrocities End: Studies from Guatemala, Burundi, Indonesia, the Sudans, Bosnia-Herzegovina, and Iraq (Cambridge University Press, 2016). She has published on issues related to the 1992–1995 war in Bosnia, mass atrocities and genocide, and how museums can engage on human rights issues. She previously worked as research director for the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum’s Committee on Conscience, where she led the museum’s research and projects on contemporary threats of genocide, including curating an exhibition, From Memory to Action: Meeting the Challenge of Genocide Today. She received a Ph.D. in comparative literature from Binghamton University in 2001.

Alan Henrikson is the Lee E. Dirks Professor of Diplomatic History and the director of Diplomatic Fletcher: Studies at The Fletcher School, where he has taught A Great Place to American diplomatic history, contemporary U.S.-European Teach relations, global political geography, and the history, theory, and practice of diplomacy. During the academic year 2010–2011 he was Fulbright Schuman Professor of U.S.EU Relations at the College of Europe in Bruges. He also has taught as Fulbright Professor at the Diplomatische Akademie in Vienna, and briefly in Japan, China, South Africa, and, most recently, Estonia. Having studied history at Harvard University (A.B., A.M., Ph.D.) and Philosophy, Politics, and Economics at the University of Oxford (B.A., M.A.), he is grateful for having gained from his experience at The Fletcher School, where he created a Certificate in Diplomatic Studies, a new knowledge of international organization and diplomatic method as well.

His publications include Negotiating World Order: The Artisanship and Architecture of Global Diplomacy, which reflects these synergetic “Fletcher” interests.

ALAN HENRIKSON

Michele L. Malvesti serves as professor of practice in International Security Studies at The Fletcher School.

21st Century A highly experienced professional of national security, she Security: has served two presidential administrations at the White Challenges and Opportunities House. During the George W. Bush administration, she served more than five years on the National Security Council staff, including as senior director for Combating Terrorism Strategy. She briefly returned to the White House in order to co-chair the presidential study review that reformed the White House organization for homeland security and counterterrorism on behalf of the Obama administration. She has worked as a professional in the intelligence community, including at the Defense Intelligence Agency and the Joint Special Operations Command. A trusted advisor on a range of international security issues, Professor Malvesti serves on the Director’s Advisory Board for the National Counterterrorism Center (NCTC) and the board of directors for the Special Operations Warrior Foundation. She is a senior advisor to the Financial Integrity Network, and she serves on the advisory board to root9B, a cyber-security services firm.

Professor Malvesti received her Ph.D. and MALD from The Fletcher School, where she was awarded the Gullion Prize for outstanding second-year student.

MICHELE L. MALVESTI

Alex de Waal is executive director of the World Peace Foundation and research professor at The Fletcher War, Mass School. Considered one of the foremost experts on Sudan Atrocities and and the Horn of Africa, his scholarly work and practice Famine: Is There an End in Sight? has also probed humanitarian crisis and response, human rights, HIV/AIDS and governance in Africa, and conflict and peacebuilding. During 2005–06, de Waal was seconded to the African Union mediation team for Darfur and from 2009 to 2011 served as senior adviser to the African Union High-Level Implementation Panel for Sudan. He has published several books. He was on the list of Foreign Policy’s 100 most influential public intellectuals in 2008 and Atlantic Monthly’s 27 “brave thinkers” in 2009. He received an OBE in 2009. His most recent book is The Real Politics of the Horn of Africa: Money, War and the Business of Power, Cambridge, Polity, 2015.

ARIANNA HUFFINGTON

Arianna Huffington is the co-founder, president, and editor-in-chief of the Huffington Post Media Group, Class Day and author of 15 books. In May 2005, she launched The Keynote Speaker Huffington Post, a news and blog site that quickly became one of the most widely read, linked to, and frequently cited media brands on the Internet. In 2012, the site won a Pulitzer Prize for national reporting. She has been named to Time magazine’s list of the world’s 100 most influential people and the Forbes Most Powerful Women list.

Originally from Greece, she moved to England when she was 16 and graduated from Cambridge University with an M.A. in economics. At 21, she became president of the famed debating society, the Cambridge Union. She serves on numerous boards, including The Center for Public Integrity and The Committee to Protect Journalists.

Susan C. Livingston graduated summa cum laude from Tufts University with a double major in Class Day political science and German and has a MALD from Alumni Speaker The Fletcher School. A member of Phi Beta Kappa, she is fluent in French and German. Ms. Livingston is a partner at Brown Brothers Harriman & Co. (BBH) and serves as BBH’s global ambassador and client liaison. In her present role, she cultivates the firm’s businesses by increasing awareness and visibility of BBH within the governmental and financial services communities. She joined BBH in 1985 in the Banking Department, working in the growing Investor Services business, and was instrumental in setting up the Dublin, Luxembourg, and Beijing offices. Most recently, Ms. Livingston ran the Funds and Asset Management Division prior to her current role as the firm’s senior client liaison. In April 2000, she was named Honorary Consul to the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
