360 DEGREES OF POSSIBILITY

On a breezy Saturday morning, hundreds of children walk up to the doors of Fleisher to go to tuition-free art classes, dropped off by caregivers who often, themselves, were students here decades ago. You cannot walk a block in South Philly without hearing someone’s story of learning to paint in our studios or making a friend in a middle school ceramics class who they still talk to today.

And now, thanks to the generosity of The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage, these conversations now take place in Spanish and Bahasa Indonesian just as frequently, a cacophony of multilingual creative exchanges that begin to reflect the true diversity of the South Philadelphia community.

In 1898, Samuel Fleisher’s vision of art as the great equalizer and connector was way ahead of his time, and we remain committed to that impulse to dream and discover and share with our neighbors as a legacy that drives everything we do.

But cultural organizations, especially historic ones like Fleisher, are easily tempted to see their lauded pasts as the only highways to their future. What we have done before endured, therefore we should continue to do it. But what the staff at Fleisher Art Memorial continue to do instead is ask questions about the past to chart a new present and future – “What was the spirit of what we did over the last 125 years and how does that translate in 2023? 2050?” The answer was 360 Culture Lab and the extraordinary collection of programs and partnerships it continues to generate.

Building new relationships with new communities is deeply personal work, however, even when done by an institution. It is done one conversation at a time, one potluck at a time, and one person at a time. The relationships built during the 360 Culture Lab project almost always started with Gerard Silva, Director of Exhibitions and Community Outreach, and its continued success and sustainability are a testament to his personal investment in each person and organization he works with. He is the ultimate translator, figuratively and literally in many cases.

Throughout this publication, personal and institutional perspectives are often tangled, because ceding organizational resources to community-driven programming is humbling, complicated work that necessarily privileges individual storytelling.

Each of us is at once our pasts and our present and the futures we dream of, and this is especially true for those who have crossed borders and left homelands and families, who have built new lives – sometimes more than once – and created families out of strangers. Reflections on home and place and safety came up again 5

and again with these new audiences, as they worked with Silva to turn Fleisher Art Memorial into part of a new “home” they now build in Philadelphia. The essays in this catalogue and accompanying video interviews done with dozens of participants show how varied the answers to this question are and how deeply personal each person’s relationship to art, community and creativity is.

The voices, programs and artistic creations presented are all different because the individuals participating are all different; there is no singular immigrant experience any more than there is a singular experience of being an artist. At Fleisher, we celebrate every one of those differences.

Of course, when Fleisher’s doors first opened 125 years ago, what was considered art was defined by a few and limited to certain media, objects and traditions that represented a particularly white, Eurocentric and academically trained experience. In 2023, we know better. Art is food and dance, song and celebration, costumes and language acquisition. Art is 360 degrees of possibility.

Art knows no bounds in its ability to tell stories, connect new neighbors and celebrate the joys and sorrows of being human, and if you don’t yet believe that, join Fleisher and these community partners for a dance class or a festival or a workshop and see for yourself.

FLEISHER ART MEMORIAL

Founded by industrialist Samuel S. Fleisher in 1898 as one of the nation’s first community-based art centers, Fleisher Art Memorial is renowned for its long-standing mission of making art accessible regardless of economic means, background, or artistic experience.

In 2023, Fleisher is celebrating its 125th anniversary as the center continues to provide free and low-cost studio art classes along with opportunities for emerging and seasoned artists to exhibit their work. Extensive arts education and community-based programming also reflects the organization’s commitment to serving and strengthening communities in Philadelphia by developing, sharing, and promoting creative resources.

CASA DE VENEZUELA

Casa de Venezuela is an organization of individuals committed to the empowerment of their community. While the Venezuelan community is not necessarily gathered in one particular neighborhood in Greater Philadelphia, they make sure to stay connected by organizing events and gatherings to promote their culture and support Venezuela. Their reach goes beyond the Venezuelan community as they embrace and invite the Latinx diaspora in our region to join their efforts through music, dance, food, and the arts. The Casa de Venezuela Philadelphia organization is connected to a larger network that includes the Lehigh Valley, Delaware, and New Jersey.

MODERO & COMPANY

Modero is the cultural hub of the South Philadelphia Indonesian Community. Founded

by Sinta Penyami Storms, an Indonesian traditional dance artist, this organization/group has one crucial purpose: to promote and preserve Indonesian traditions in the Philadelphia region. Whether through dance, music, crafts, food or art, this rich community lives by powerful and meaningful phrases originated in country villages: Gotong Royong (working together) and Sintuwu Maroso (living and building a strong community together).

THE PEW CENTER FOR ARTS & HERITAGE

The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage is a multidisciplinary grantmaker and hub for knowledge-sharing, funded by The Pew Charitable Trusts, dedicated to fostering a vibrant cultural community in Greater Philadelphia. The Center invests in ambitious, imaginative, and catalytic work that showcases the region’s cultural vitality and enhances public life, and engages in an exchange of ideas concerning artistic and interpretive practice with a broad network of cultural practitioners and leaders.

The immigrant experience and Fleisher Art Memorial have a long history. Samuel Stewart Fleisher, the son of German Jewish immigrants, developed an interest in enhancing the lives of workers in his family business through the arts. The Fleisher Yarn Company in Philadelphia was one of the nation’s first and most successful worsted woolens mills in the United States. When Samuel Fleisher joined the company, most of the neighborhood around the Jewish Union Building at 4th & Bainbridge, our organization’s first home, was inhabited by newly arrived immigrants of Russian, Italian, and Irish descent. Mr. Fleisher had a real interest in the arts and felt that providing free art lessons could enhance and enrich one’s life. It could be deduced that Mr. Fleisher’s intention was to create a home away from home in which art provided an escape from daily routine and the unforeseeable and challenging reality of living in a new city.

In creating this community art center in the late 19th century, Mr. Fleisher was ahead of the curve. He created a safe space for all in which art played a transcendent role in the lives of residents and immigrants alike. Mr. Fleisher was forced to expand and move locations due to the popularity of the classes. Our current location at 719 Catharine Street is a series of buildings linked together that includes what was once a church and is now known as the Sanctuary, a space where creativity comes together. In many ways, the Sanctuary is a particularly great metaphor for Mr. Fleisher’s intentions: Art is spiritual because it lives within us and in order for art to manifest itself in our lives, we must create, we must share, and we must experience it. Making art accessible to all also means coming together and opening our doors to the many diverse communities in Philadelphia.

Our Sanctuary space has proven to be that sacred shared space for creativity.

As immigration continues to shift in our area, working with communities that are making new homes in Philadelphia continues to be a priority for Fleisher Art Memorial and in order to serve them better and make strong connections, empathy is necessary. Art can and does serve as a tool for better understanding non-Western cultures and traditions and thanks to The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage, 360 Culture Lab was created to collaborate with two local organizations: Modero & Company and Casa de Venezuela. Through this collaboration, each organization worked alongside Fleisher as a partner in order to organize cultural events showcasing the creativity of their homelands. In promoting their respective traditions and allowing them to engage and represent their communities, 9

360 Culture Lab enriched and expanded the cultural spectrum of Philadelphia as a whole, not just on Fleisher’s campus. The COVID-19 pandemic forced us to explore new, creative ways to engage the public, and outdoor spaces became as necessary as indoor spaces. Sustainability meant that we worked together to strengthen our mission while continuing the work of inclusion by making Fleisher a space in which you feel at home and to which these communities return again and again.

The multiple ideas of “home” experienced by Fleisher’s community turned out to be the thread that knitted the experiences of these various community stakeholders together. In many people’s minds, a home has walls, floors and ceilings, doors and windows. It is an enclosed structure, the place we define with an address, a residence.

But “home” is also a state of mind, a place that gives us comfort, a place that we yearn for that is full of memories. This notion varies immensely depending on age and life circumstances such as immigration and family systems. Most of us, as kids, know home as a place we return to from school and the place we consume food and watch TV. This home provides us with basic needs and if we are fortunate enough, with a set of parental figures. As we grow older and responsibilities shift in our lives, home becomes a place in our minds and our hearts.

This concept of home evokes a deeply personal narrative with many variants and subdivisions. The narrative for the immigrant community is more complex as they navigate two constructs of home: the one left behind and the new one in which they have landed. Home is where family still lives, home is where most childhood memories live, home is the food you eat, home is the streets you know. The new home often presents many challenges - sometimes language, sometimes documentation, and most definitely a lot of uncertainty. Yet making yourself at home in a new space means feeling comfortable and at ease in order for you to enjoy yourself.

This concept was the foundation of what we know now as Fleisher Art Memorial: a connection between immigrant communities and art that continues to flourish and expand in the organization today.

Being an immigrant implies that you left your homeland for another. That definition makes it sound permanent, which in many cases it is, but this is not necessarily true every time. The reasons for immigration are in constant flux, often triggered by uncertainty or unjust conditions around the world. From political turmoil to warfare, from human rights violations to socioeconomic inequalities, the reasons for immigration are constantly changing. While there are some exceptions and migration can be voluntary, due to marriage or employment for example, it is fair to say that there’s still an adjustment period in which some type of safety net, such as a community, is necessary for an immigrant’s well-being.

Immigrant communities are the result of an influx of individuals and families from a particular country that often decide to reside in a particular area or neighborhood of the adopted homeland in order to provide each other with a safety net, a home away from home. Residing in the same area offers the community a support system that is hard to duplicate. Being surrounded by familiar faces, food, language, and customs in a new environment is the most welcoming experience for an immigrant.

Whether the new location is a temporary shelter or a permanent home, connections are made that will help in navigating the set of challenges ahead, from basic needs to the complex immigration process. Feeling connected with a support system is a wonderful thing!

It is important to also acknowledge the traumas of displacement. The act of forced immigration often creates a humanitarian crisis for immigrants and defines them as refugees in another land, affecting both the immigrants and the local residents in the area. Since neither side is often completely prepared for this challenge, misunderstandings, conflict, and human rights violations can emerge. From my own personal experience, I’ve observed the challenges of displacement within family members of immigrants, especially with youth and the elderly, who are often not part of the decision making or planning of a relocation and are more vulnerable to mental stress in the adjustment process. There are many programs and organizations in cities designed for assistance in such cases. From Fleisher’s perspective, we observed that participation in any form of a creative outlet has beneficial outcomes and helps with the overall mental health of its participants.

Programs such as Fleisher’s Teen Lounge (free for teens ages 13–19) or Creative Aging (free for Latinx individuals over 55) can have a positive effect on displaced members of a community. Providing a safe space and environment for creativity encourages inclusion and benefits everyone involved.

The feeling of displacement is something we all experience at some point in our lives, but it is more prevalent when all your surroundings are unfamiliar, so it is felt acutely among immigrant communities. For this reason, it is crucial for cities to have cultural and art spaces in which communities can come together to showcase and celebrate their culture and traditions. Art and culture are forever interwoven and as we continue equalizing the importance of Western and non-Western art, we become more inclusive and enjoy the benefits of acceptance.

There is still a great need to keep growing, learning and expanding our art vocabulary as the world continues to evolve and broaden the definition. After 125 years, Fleisher is still committed to these principles and the need to evolve and the generosity of the The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage continues to allow us to explore this work.

Samuel Stewart Fleisher, seorang anak dari imigran Yahudi Jerman, ingin meningkatkan kualitas kehidupan pekerja-pekerja di perusahaan keluarganya melalui seni. Saat itu, perusahaan Fleisher Yarn Company di Philadelphia adalah salah satu perusahaan benang wol pertama dan paling sukses di Amerika Serikat. Perasaan ini sangat beragam, tergantung dengan umur dan situasi kehidupan, seperti imigrasi dan situasi keluarga. Untuk sebagian besar kita, waktu kecil, rumah adalah tempat kita untuk pulang dari sekolah dan tempat kita makan dan nonton TV. Rumah ini menyediakan kebutuhan dasar kita, dan kalau kita cukup beruntung, tempat kita mempunyai sosok orangtua. Dan saat kita bertumbuh dewasa dan tanggung jawab mulai mengubah hidup kita, rumah menjadi tempat yang terwujud di angan dan hati kita.

Konsep “rumah” ini menimbulkan narasi pribadi yang dalam dengan bermacam bentuk. Untuk komunitas imigran, narasi ini biasanya lebih kompleks, karena mereka mengalami dua konsep rumah yang berbeda: rumah yang mereka tinggalkan, dan rumah baru yang sekarang mereka tinggali. Rumah adalah tempat di mana keluarga mereka masih tinggal, di mana kenangan masa kecil berada, makanan yang disantap, dan jalan yang kita tahu. Rumah yang baru mempunyai banyak tantangan, terkadang masalah bahasa, masalah legalitas, dan tentunya banyak ketidakpastian. Namun, mengakrabkan diri dengan tempat yang baru berarti kita bisa merasa nyaman dan bisa menikmati rumah yang baru. Konsep ini adalah dasar dari Fleisher Art Memorial: sebuah hubungan antara komunitas imigran dan seni yang terus bertumbuh subur di organisasi ini.

Menjadi seorang imigran berarti seseorang meninggalkan tanah airnya untuk pindah ke negara baru. Definisi ini seringkali terlihat permanen, dan memang kerap demikian, tetapi tidak selalu. Alasan untuk bermigrasi selalu dinamis, terkadang karena ketidakpastian atau adanya ketidakadilan di seluruh dunia.

Dari gejolak politik sampai peperangan, dari pelanggaran hak asasi manusia sampai ketidaksetaraan sosio ekonomis, alasan untuk bermigrasi selalu berubah.

Walau terkadang ada pengecualian dan migrasi bisa dilakukan secara sukarela, misalnya karena pernikahan atau pekerjaan, tetap selalu ada waktu penyesuaian diri yang memerlukan jaring pengaman, seperti adanya sebuah komunitas, yang sangat dibutuhkan untuk menjamin kesejahteraan seorang imigran.

Komunitas imigran adalah hasil dari masuknya individu-individu dan keluarga dari sebuah negara yang seringkali memutuskan untuk bersama-sama tinggal di daerah tertentu di negara yang baru untuk membangun jaring pengaman bersama, 13

rumah di luar tanah air sendiri. Tinggal di daerah yang sama bisa memberi komunitas imigran dukungan praktikal, social, dan emosional yang tiada duanya. Dikelilingi oleh muka, makanan, bahasa, dan budaya yang akrab selagi berada di lingkungan yang baru adalah sesuatu pengalaman yang ramah untuk seorang imigran. Walau lokasi baru mungkin adalah tempat penampungan sementara, atau sebuah rumah yang permanen, hubungan yang dibangun dapat membantu dalam menavigasi berbagai kendala seperti mendapatkan kebutuhan pokok sampai proses imigrasi yang berbelit. Mempunyai komunitas yang mendukung dan menunjang adalah sesuatu hal yang berharga!

Trauma yang terjadi karena perpindahan tempat adalah sesuatu yang juga penting untuk kita pahami. Imigrasi secara terpaksa seringkali menimbulkan krisis kemanusiaan untuk para imigran dan membuat mereka menjadi pengungsi di negara lain, yang tentunya memengaruhi para imigran sendiri dan residen lokal di daerah tersebut.

Umumnya kedua belah pihak biasanya tidak siap menghadapi problem ini, akibatnya kesalahpahaman, konflik, dan pelanggaran hak asasi manusia dapat terjadi. Dari pengalaman saya sendiri, saya sudah melihat sendiri tantangan yang terjadi karena perpindahan tempat di dalam anggota keluarga imigran, terutama untuk anak-anak dan orang-orang lanjut usia, yang seringkali tidak mempunyai andil dalam keputusan atau perencanaan untuk pindah, dan mempunyai resiko yang lebih tinggi untuk mengalami stres mental dalam proses penyesuaian diri di tempat yang baru. Ada banyak program dan organisasi di berbagai kota untuk membantu proses tersebut. Dalam pandangan Fleisher, kita melihat bahwa partisipasi dalam kegiatan kreatif mempunyai banyak manfaat dan membantu kesehatan mental para peserta. Program-program seperti “Teen Lounge” (gratis untuk remaja umur 13-19 tahun) atau “Creative Aging” (gratis untuk peserta dari Amerika Latin yang berumur di atas 55 tahun) dapat memberi efek positif untuk anggota komunitas yang pindah dari tanah airnya. Karena itu, sangat penting untuk sebuah kota untuk mempunyai tempat seni dan budaya di mana berbagai komunitas bisa berkumpul untuk menampilkan dan merayakan tradisi dan kebudayaan mereka. Seni dan budaya selalu terhubung, dan selama kita terus berusaha menyetarakan kedudukan budaya barat dan non-barat, kita akan menjadi lebih inklusif dan bisa menikmati manfaat dari pengertian atas persamaan dan perbedaan kita semua. Masih ada kebutuhan besar bagi kita untuk tetap bertumbuh, belajar dan mengembangkan kosa kata seni kita selama dunia terus berevolusi dan memperluas definisinya. Setelah 125 tahun, Fleisher terus berkomitmen pada prinsip-prinsip ini, dan perlunya untuk terus berevolusi dan dukungan dari The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage terus memungkinkan kami untuk mengeksplorasi hal ini.

La experiencia migratoria y el Fleisher Art Memorial tienen una larga historia.

Samuel Stewart Fleisher, hijo de inmigrantes judíos alemanes, desarrollo su interés en mejorar la vida de los trabajadores del negocio de su familia a través de las artes.

La compañía de hilos Fleisher en Filadelfia fue uno de los primeros y más exitosos molinos de hilos de lana en los Estados Unidos. Cuando Samuel Fleisher se unió a la compañía, la mayoría del vecindario alrededor del edificio del Sindicato de Judíos, en la calle 4 y Bainbridge donde estuvo nuestra primera sede, estaba habitado por inmigrantes rusos, italianos e irlandeses recién llegados. A medida que la inmigración continúa cambiando en nuestra área, el trabajo con las comunidades que tiene a Filadelfia como su nuevo hogar continúa siendo la prioridad para Fleisher Art Memorial y es necesario tener empatía con ellas para poder atenderles mejor y estrechar relaciones. El arte sirve como herramienta para entender mejor las culturas y tradiciones no occidentales y gracias al The Pew Center for the Arts & Heritage, fue creado el 360 Culture Lab para colaborar con dos organizaciones locales: Modero y Compañía, y Casa de Venezuela. A través de esta colaboración, cada organización trabajó con Fleisher como socio 15

para organizar eventos culturales mostrando la creatividad de sus países de origen. Al promover sus respectivas tradiciones y permitiéndoles involucrarse y representar a sus comunidades, 360 Cultural Lab enriqueció y expandió el espectro cultural de Filadelfia entera, no solamente el de las instalaciones de Fleisher. Formas nuevas y creativas de involucrar al público y los espacios exteriores se tornaron tan necesarios como los espacios interiores. Sustentabilidad significó que trabajáramos juntos para fortalecer nuestra misión mientras continuábamos el trabajo de inclusión, haciendo de Fleisher un espacio en el que te sientes en casa y al que estas comunidades vuelven una y otra vez.

Las múltiples ideas de “hogar” que la comunidad de Fleisher experimentó resultaron ser el hilo que entretejió las experiencias de diferentes miembros de la comunidad.

En la mente de las personas una casa tiene paredes, pisos y techos, ventanas y puertas, es una estructura cerrada, un lugar que se define con una dirección, una residencia.

Pero un “hogar” es también un estado mental, un lugar que nos brinda consuelo, un lugar que añoramos y está lleno de recuerdos. Esta noción varía inmensamente dependiendo de la edad y las circunstancias de vida, como en el caso de la inmigración y de los grupos familiares. La mayoría de nosotros, de niños conocemos el hogar como el lugar a donde volvemos después de la escuela, el lugar en donde comemos y vemos televisión. Este hogar cubre nuestras necesidades básicas y si corremos con suerte viene con un par de figuras paternas, a medida que envejecemos y las responsabilidades cambian en nuestras vidas, el hogar se convierte en un lugar en nuestras mentes y en nuestros corazones.

Este concepto de hogar suscita una narrativa profunda y personal con muchas variantes y subdivisiones. La narrativa para comunidad inmigrante es más compleja, pues ellos manejan dos versiones de hogar: el que dejaron atrás y el nuevo, en el que aterrizaron.

El hogar es donde su familia aún vive, el hogar es donde la mayoría de los recuerdos de la niñez están, el hogar es la comida que comes, el hogar son las calles que conoces.

El nuevo hogar viene con muchos retos, a veces el idioma, otras la documentación y definitivamente con mucha incertidumbre. Aun así, tratar de sentirse en casa en un lugar nuevo significa sentirse cómodo y bajar la guardia para poder disfrutar el momento. Este concepto fue la base de lo que hoy conocemos como el Fleisher Art Memorial: Una conexión entre las comunidades de inmigrantes y el arte que hoy continúa floreciendo y creciendo en la organización.

Ser un inmigrante implica que dejaste una patria por otra, esa definición lo hace sonar permanente, lo cual en muchos casos es así, pero eso no necesariamente es verdad siempre. Las razones para emigrar están en constante cambio, a menudo provocadas por la incertidumbre o las condiciones de injusticia alrededor del mundo; de la agitación política al conflicto armado, de las violaciones a los derechos humanos a la desigualdad socioeconómicas, las razones de la inmigración están en constante cambio. Si bien hay algunas excepciones y la migración puede ser voluntaria, como por matrimonio o empleo, se puede decir que también hay un periodo de ajuste en el cual debe existir algún tipo de red de seguridad, como una comunidad, la cual es necesaria para el bienestar del inmigrante.

Las comunidades de inmigrantes son el resultado de la afluencia de individuos y familias de un país en particular que a menudo deciden vivir en un área o vecindario específico, en su lugar de adopción, para proveerse mutuamente una red de seguridad, un hogar lejos del hogar. El vivir en la misma área le ofrece a la comunidad un sistema de apoyo que es difícil de copiar, el estar rodeado por caras conocidas, comida, idioma 16

y tradiciones en un ambiente nuevo es la experiencia más acogedora para un inmigrante. Ya sea que la ubicación nueva sea un albergue temporal o un hogar permanente, se hacen conexiones que ayudarán a navegar el conjunto de desafíos que vendrán, desde las necesidades básicas hasta el complejo proceso migratorio. ¡Sentirse conectado con un sistema de apoyo es una cosa maravillosa!

Es importante que también tomemos en cuenta el trauma del desplazamiento.

La migración forzada a menudo crea una crisis humanitaria en los inmigrantes y los define como refugiados en otras tierras, lo cual afecta al inmigrante y al residente local; confusión, conflicto y violaciones de derechos humanos puedan surgir, ya que ninguno de los dos lados está completamente preparado para este reto. Desde mi experiencia personal he observado los retos de desplazamiento dentro de las familias de inmigrantes, especialmente en los miembros jóvenes y los de la tercera edad, quienes a menudo no son parte de la toma de decisiones o de la planificación de la mudanza y son más vulnerables al estrés mental en el proceso de cambio.

Existen muchos programas y organizaciones en ciudades diseñadas para ayudar en esos casos. Desde la perspectiva del Fleisher observamos que la participación en cualquier forma creativa tiene resultados beneficiosos y ayuda a la mejoría de la salud mental de los participantes. Programas como “Teen Lounge”, gratis para los adolescentes de 13-19 o “Creative Aging”, gratis para personas latinas de más de 55 años, pueden tener un efecto positivo en los miembros desplazados de una comunidad. Proveer un espacio seguro y un entorno para la creatividad promueve la inclusión y beneficia a todos los involucrados.

La sensación de desplazamiento es algo que todos vivimos en algún punto de nuestras vidas, pero es más predominante cuando lo que nos rodea no es conocido, eso es lo que sienten las comunidades de inmigrantes, por esta razón, es crucial que las ciudades tengan espacios de arte y cultura en los que estas comunidades se puedan unir a mostrar y celebrar sus culturas y tradiciones. El arte y la cultura están entrelazadas y a medida que continuemos equiparando la importancia del arte occidental y no occidental nos volveremos más inclusivos y podremos disfrutar de los beneficios de la aceptación. Aún hay una gran necesidad de seguir creciendo, aprendiendo y expandiendo nuestro vocabulario artístico mientras el mundo continúa evolucionando y ampliando la definición. Luego de 125 años el Fleisher sigue comprometido con estos principios y con la necesidad de evolucionar; la generosidad del The Pew Center for the Arts & Heritage continúa permitiéndonos explorar esta labor.
