In their CPA residency at Southwark School, kindergarten students are traveling the world with Teacher Chela and exploring food, cultures, and animal habitats from each location on their trip, from the Caribbean to Central America and even the Antarctic!

Project 1: Tamales, the Americas (Mexico)

After reading the book Too Many Tamales, students made their own tamales using corn husks and tamale “fillings” of their choice. Materials: corn husks, googly eyes, markers, tissue paper, color paper, felt fabric.

Since 1997, Fleisher’s Community Partnerships in the Arts (CPA) program has delivered creative art-making experiences to children and youth in Philadelphia’s public schools and community after-school programs. Visit fleisher.community to learn more.

MADE AT FLEISHER SPRING STUDENT MARKET

MADE AT FLEISHER is an indoor juried art and craft market organized by Fleisher Art Memorial to celebrate the work of current Fleisher students and alumni. This inaugural student market, juried by faculty member Maureen Duffy, will highlight the many mediums offered at Fleisher.

Whether you’re celebrating Mothers’ Day or out and about with friends, roll by to check out the market - and consider registering for one of the workshops also happening in our studios that day, including Family Workshop: Clay Date! (Two sessions available from 9–11 am and 11:30 am–1:30 pm.)

CHAINSTITCH AND PHOTO EMBROIDERY at CHERRY STREET PIER with Cassie Jones

Explore textural applications of embroidery on fabric and the process of incorporating photos into your fabric pieces. The workshop will cover both hand and machine methods for embroidery and each person will have the opportunity to use a traditional crank-directed chainstitch machine.

FIELD RECORDING SOUND WALK

Discover the possibilities of Sound Art in this one-session workshop exploring listening and field recording techniques within the experience of a guided sound walk.

DRAWING ANIMALS AND DINOSAURS at THE ACADEMY OF NATURAL SCIENCES with Meg Lemieur

To ensure that Fleisher’s programs remain as affordable and accessible as possible, we offer tuition assistance each term. Applications for the summer term will be available on May 6; visit the website for details.

*During the May 27–June 14 closure of our main building for campus improvements, in-person registration support will remain available in the lobby of our Works on Paper Building at 705 Christian Street. Fleisher will also be closed on June 19 (Juneteenth) and July 4 (Independence Day).

Summer Workshop Highlight:

Storytelling and Collage (5-day workshop)

July 8–12, 2–5 pm

Instructor: Anthony Folks

Anthony Folks has been teaching at Fleisher since the summer of 2022. This July, he’ll lead Storytelling and Collage, an interactive class introducing students to collage using both traditional and contemporary techniques. Taking inspiration from reference material, observation, and imagination, students will explore storytelling using paper as their primary medium while learning the principles of composition, shape, and color.

Summer Camp

June 17–August 2

Fun-filled art adventures for young artists ages 5 to 18!

For our youngest artists (ages 5–6), projects will focus on a new and exciting theme each week, exploring everything from time travel and life under the sea to joining the circus and the stars and planets of our universe! Using materials such as clay, paint, and found objects, campers will develop fine motor skills while also learning about space, balance, and more.

In addition to providing younger campers with plenty of opportunities for play and discovery, Fleisher’s summer camp program also offers older students a unique studio experience with access to sessions exploring everything from oil painting and figure drawing to wheel throwing and fiber arts.

Print Love-In: Pride Edition

Saturday, June 22

In celebration of Pride Month, join Fleisher for a summer edition of Print Love-In! People of all ages are invited to join us in our Works on Paper building (705 Christian Street) to explore a wide range of printmaking techniques—from block print to screenprint—and leave with an array of prints, posters, and swag. This special edition of Print Love-In is curated by artist and Fleisher faculty member Justin Keller.

No printmaking experience is necessary; Fleisher teaching artists will be on hand to help participants work with designs donated by Philly printmakers. Advance registration is required.

All Ages Sessions: 10–11:30 am and 12–1:30 pm

$15 per person, includes all printing materials and takeaways. Activities are suitable for ages 5 and up.

Adults 21+ Session: 2–4 pm (Adults 21+)

$30 per person, BYOB (corkage fee of $10 per wine bottle, cash only)

Saturday Young Artists Program

Your support helps to facilitate vital programming such as our Saturday Young Artists Program (SYAP), which offers classes for young people ages 5–18 designed to develop artistic skills, foster engagement with the arts, encourage self-expression, and build confidence as a creative person. Over 100 classes in a range of media are offered during the fall, winter, and spring terms, allowing children and youth to experience hands-on artmaking in a supportive and enriching environment.

This year’s series, juried by James Britt and Kathleen Eastwood-Riaño and organized by Gerard Silva, features a trio of three-person exhibitions showcasing the work of nine contemporary artists living and working in the Philadelphia region: Kim Altomare, Natessa Amin, Brynn Hurlstone, Alexis Granwell, Lauren Pakradooni, Joseph Lazaro Rodriguez, Erik Ruin, Sean M. Starowitz, and Idalia Vasquez-Achury.

The 2024 Wind Challenge Exhibition Series runs from February 13 through July 31, made possible thanks to generous support from the Wind Foundation.

Call for Entries: 2025 Wind Challenge

Submit your work to be considered for the 46th exhibition series of the Wind Challenge! Jurors for this year’s competition are Colette Fu and Heidi Ratanavanich. The deadline to apply is Monday, April 29, 11:59 pm ET. Visit fleisher.org for details.

Support Philadelphia’s Latino merchants during a series of monthly markets at Cherry Street Pier kicking off in April and running through October. Discover artisanal crafts, handmade goods, and more at festive events also featuring special collaborations and surprises – there’s something for everyone!

El Mercado Cultural is an initiative of Fleisher Art Memorial with the purpose of supporting Latino merchants with free creative and marketing resources and bringing community efforts to other accessible and community spaces in our city. The program is a collaboration with the Delaware River Waterfront Corporation, made possible in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Sciences.

At the heart of a vibrant neighborhood, Fleisher’s inspiring architecture and century-old history as a community art center lend a unique spirit to our event spaces. Historic, non-traditional charm and convenient Bella Vista location make Fleisher an ideal choice for private or professional gatherings.

The Sanctuary can accommodate up to 100 seated guests, or 130 standing. Fleisher’s art studios could also provide a productive and creative atmosphere for your next meeting, lecture, staff retreat, or group event. Art studios can accommodate up to 40 guests.

Tours for prospective rentals are available during weekday hours (Tuesday–Thursday, 12–4 pm).
