A message from the President….

Dear Friends and Neighbors, December finds us in the busiest month of our year. There will be the Golf Cart Poker Run, Christmas Cantata, and Christmas Golf Cart Parade with a White Elephant to follow. Please check your calendar for each event and the starting times. Don’t forget to decorate your golf carts for the holiday season. Please remember to purchase your tickets for the New Year’s Eve Party. If you wish, dress in the decade that you graduated from high school. Come to have a good time with friends and neighbors to ring in the New Year.

At the December HOA meeting, you will again be able to vote for Volunteer of the Year. The Volunteer of the Year will be announced at the Annual HOA meeting in January 2018. This volunteer will have their name added to the Volunteer of the Year Plaque, receive $100, and admission for themselves and significant other to all HOA events.

It is time to pay your Annual HOA dues ($15). Please see the HOA Treasurer, Richard Gould, #130, or any board member to pay your dues. Your dues must be paid by January 6, 2018 to be eligible to vote at the Annual HOA meeting.

Your dues help supports upcoming activities in the New Year.

If the community is to have the annual Christmas Dinner, we need someone to volunteer to host it. Please talk to Maria Combs or myself if you wish to host the dinner.

At the December HOA meeting, nominations will be taken from the floor for Board of Directors. At the Annual Meeting in January, we will be voting for four (4) new Board Members and on the revisions to our Bylaws.

On behalf of the HOA Board, I wish you and your families a Blessed Christmas and a Happy New Year. If you are traveling, please travel safely. Finally, please take time to remember the true meaning of Christmas.

CHRISTMAS WREATH RAFFLE Barb Waybill has donated a Christmas Wreath, which she made to be raffled off. Tickets are $1.00 for one ticket or $5.00 for six tickets.

Purchase tickets from Barb at #162, or Joyce Wright at #176. Proceeds will go to the Food Bank (50%) and 50 % will go to the HOA. Drawing will be at the HOA meeting December 12th. You do not need to be present to win.

FOOD BANK Food Bank donations have increased this fall. Our local pounds have gone over 600 lbs. so far.

Monetary contributions continue to really bump up that total. Thank you to all who have helped.

The slumbering kiddies were dreaming in glee, in hopes they’d find water skis under the tree.

They all knew that Santa was well on his way, in a Mercedes Benz instead of a sleigh. He whizzed up the highways and zoomed up the roads, in his shiny new sports car, delivering his loads.

The tropical moon gave the city a glow, and lighted the way for Santa to go. As he jumped from the auto he gave a weak chuckle, he was dressed in Bermuda’s with an Ivy League buckle.

There weren’t any chimneys, but that caused no gloom for Santa came in through the Florida room. He stopped at each house, stayed only a minute, and emptied his sack of the stuff that was in it.

Before he departed, he treated himself, to a glass of orange juice left on the shelf. Then he turned with a jerk and bounced back to the car, remembering still he must go so far.

He stepped on the gas, up Highway 19, he went like a flash. And I heard him exclaim as he went on his way, “Merry Christmas to Florida, I wish I could stay.

Remembrance Service The Remembrance Day services will be held On Saturday, January 27th at 2:00 PM.

Message from the Editor I would like to thank everyone that has been apart of this years Gator Tales. Without your help and participation there would be no Gator Tales.

I am looking forward to 2018 and hoping more people will contribute articles, stories, recipes or anything you wish to share. This is your newsletter, I only put it together.

So, from the Gator Tales staff, I would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

LAKE HAMMOCK VILLAGE OPEN HOUSE We would like to thank everyone who attended our Open House at the new Sales Office.

There were over 90 residents in attendance and a good time was had by all. Congratulations to our four winners of the door prizes, Dave Rawson, Debbie Bialecki, Dave Graham and Bea Koenig.

Most recently, prior to moving to LHV, they were the owners of The Rabbit Place in Heuvelton, NY where they raised rabbits that they sold to a processing plant for resell to NYC restaurants. They also raised their own beef, pigs, meat chickens and laying hens.

Millie attends water aerobics, volunteers at Bingo and goes to TOPS (taking off pounds sensibly). She has participated in both the Bylaws Committee and the Statutory Committee.

Jim says that he wants to spend his retirement reading, a lot of R & R, and travelling.

Photo by: Sharon Bowden Jim and Millie moved to their home in Lake Hammock Village, at 163 Glen Este Court in February 2017. They have been married for 30 years and hail from New York state. Jim was born and raised in the Cooperstown area which is known as the home of the Baseball Hall of Fame. Millie was born and raised in Utica, New York, along the Erie Canal. They have a combined family of five children, three sons and two daughters. They have 12 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren with a 14th due this month.

Jim spent 23 years in the United States Air Force, working in telecommunications. He retired in 1994 and held various jobs afterwards including fork-lift driver, OTR truck driver and security professional at an apartment complex in Waikiki, HI. Millie worked as an office manager/accountant for a carpentry and contracting business that built custom homes in Potomac, MD. She has also worked as a property manager for a 200+ unit apartment complex in Tacoma, WA, a property manager for a small complex in Waikiki, HI, and a tax office manager and enrolled agent with the IRS.

After Jim retired from the Air Force, they travelled extensively, visiting all the states, including Alaska and Hawaii, most of the Canadian provinces, Mexico and England. Following Jim's retirement, they made an agreement to live in different places, two years in a place of Jim's choice and two years in a place of Millie's choice. This allowed them to live in a variety of different locales. They moved to Central Florida to be near Disney.

Photo by: Sharon Bowden Sonya McLead Sonya moved into her home at 54 Glen Este in the spring of 2017. Prior to moving to Lake Hammock Village, Sonya had lived in Orlando. One of her four daughters lives in Haines City and wanted her mother to be closer to her.

The daughter of an airman in the Air Force, Sonya travelled extensively as a child. In fact, they were living in Hawaii at the outbreak of WWII. They were living on base and her neighbor’s home was attacked during the raid. Sonya still holds a piece of shrapnel that serves as a reminder of what happened on that fateful day.

During her working years, Sonya was employed in the financial, retail, and office administration industries. It was during her employment at the local “dime store” that she met her husband who was the store manager. Sonya and her husband were married for 46 years, but he has since passed away. Together, Sonya and her husband had four daughters and all of them live in Florida with one of them, as mentioned before, living right here in Haines City.

Sonya attends Bingo, the pot luck dinners and other community events. In fact, Sonya loves to dance, with or without a partner, and recently attended the Harvest Dance where it was apparent she had a great time.

If you see her out and about, be sure to stop, introduce yourself, and welcome her to our community.

2017 HARVEST DANCE The 2017 Harvest Dance was, once again, a wonderful fun-filled evening for all who came out to enjoy.

For those that didn’t make it – you missed a great time as evidenced by the pictures.

A big thank you to all who helped make this event so fun, and to all who showed up Sunday morning to help restore the clubhouse back to normal.

Congratulations to Jim and Donna Barkley for winning the $20 Gift Certificate to Dora’s Pizza, enjoy that great Italian Dinner. There will be a Poker Run trivia contest during the event and a cash prize will be awarded.

You don’t have to know how to play Poker, we will check your hand for you. Come and enjoy this event with your neighbors.

SPECIAL NEEDS SHELTERS

When there are emergency situations (i.e. hurricanes), Polk County has three (3) Special Needs Shelters. These are the first to open. People with special needs are encouraged to register with the county. A special needs shelter is an emergency facility capable of providing special medical or nursing care which does not necessitate an acute care hospital setting. A special needs shelter is a temporary emergency facility capable of providing care to residents whose medical condition may require the use of electrical equipment, oxygen, dialysis, or individuals with physical, cognitive, or medical conditions who may require assistance from medical professionals. There is one (1) Special Needs Shelter that takes pets, cats and small dogs. A bus will pick you up and transport you to the shelter.

They will also check your home every other day until your home is considered ready for you to return. You will then be transported home. This transportation is free. The shelter will provide you with a cot and three (3) meals a day. Spouses can go with you. There is an RN at each of these shelters.

Boxing Day - the Day after Christmas!

Boxing Day takes place on December 26th and is only celebrated in a few countries; mainly ones historically connected to the UK (such as Canada, Australia, South Africa and New Zealand) and in many European countries. In Germany it is known as "Zweite Feiertag” (which means 'second celebration') and also “Zweiter Weihnachtsfeiertag” which translates as Boxing Day (although it doesn’t literally mean that)!

It was started in the UK about 800 years ago, during the Middle Ages. It was the day when the alms box, collection boxes for the poor often kept in churches, were traditionally opened so that the contents could be distributed to poor people. Some churches still open these boxes on Boxing Day. It might have been the Romans that first brought this type of collecting box to the UK, but they used them to collect money for the betting games which they played during their winter celebrations!

In Holland, some collection boxes were made out of a rough pottery called 'earthenware' and were shaped like pigs. Perhaps this is where we get the term 'Piggy Bank'!

It was also traditional that servants got the day off to celebrate Christmas with their families on Boxing Day. Before World War II, it was common for working people (such as milkmen and butchers) to travel round their delivery places and collect their Christmas box or tip.

This tradition has now mostly stopped and any Christmas tips, given to people such as postal workers and newspaper delivery children, are not normally given or collected on Boxing Day. Boxing Day has now become another public holiday in countries such as the UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. It is also the traditional day that Pantomimes started to play.

There are also often sports played on Boxing Day in the UK, especially horse racing and football matches! It's also when shops traditionally had big sales after Christmas in the UK (like Black Friday in the USA).

The 26th December is also St. Stephen's Day. Just to confuse things, there are two St. Stephens in history! The first St. Stephen is believed to have been a very early follower of Jesus and he is said to have been the first Christian Martyr (a person who dies for their religious beliefs). The Bible says that Stephen (who was a Jew) was stoned to death by some other Jews (who didn't believe in Jesus).

The second St. Stephen was a Missionary, in Sweden, in the 800s. He loved all animals but particularly horses (perhaps why there is traditionally horse racing on boxing day). He was also a martyr and was killed by pagans in Sweden. In Germany there was a tradition that horses would be ridden around the inside of the church during the St. Stephen's Day service!

St. Stephen's Day (or 'the feast of Stephen') is when the Carol 'Good King Wenceslas' is set.

It's about helping the poor - so it has a strong connection to Boxing Day.

The Christmas Pickle The tradition of the Christmas Pickle has got to be one of the strangest modern Christmas customs in that no one is quite sure why it exists at all!

In the 1880s Woolworth stores started selling glass ornaments imported from Germany and some were in the shape of various fruit and vegetables. It seems that pickles must have been among the selection!

Around the same time it was claimed that the Christmas Pickle was a very old German tradition and that the pickle was the last ornament hung on the Christmas tree and then the first child to find the pickle got an extra present.

However, the claim that it's an old German tradition seems to be a total myth! Not many people in Germany have even heard of the Christmas Pickle! (Similarly in Russia virtually no one knows the supposedly Russian story of Babushka!)

Some families now have the tradition of hanging the pickle on the tree, with the first person/child to find it getting a present. But it probably didn't start in Germany!

There are two other rather far-fetched stories linking the pickle to Christmas.

One features a fighter in the American Civil War who was born in Bavaria (an area of what is now Germany). He was a prisoner, and starving, he begged a guard for one last pickle before he died. The guard took pity on him and gave a pickle to him. The pickle

gave him the mental and physical strength to live on!

The other story is linked to St. Nicholas. It's a medieval tale of two Spanish boys traveling home from a boarding school for the holidays. When they stopped at an inn for the night, the evil innkeeper, killed the boys and put them in a pickle barrel. That evening, St. Nicholas stopped at the same inn, and found the boys in the barrel and miraculously bought them back to life!

There is an old legend about St. Nicholas rescuing boys from a barrel but the barrel was originally holding meat for pies - not pickles!

So it's most likely that an ornament salesmen, with a lot of spare pickles to sell, invented the legend of the Christmas Pickle!

The American city of Berrien Springs, MI (also known as the Christmas Pickle Capital of the World) has an annual pickle festival held during the early part of December.
