FOLSOM LAKE COLLEGE 2017-2018 ANNUAL REPORT

STRENGTHENING TIES TO OUR COMMUNITY

Message from the President A Message from the President Contact Rachel Colleagues and Friends of FLC, When I joined Folsom Lake College as president in July 2017, I had great admiration and respect for its impressive student body, talented faculty and staff, and the greater college community it serves. Now more than a year into my tenure, I have a deeper understanding of what a special place this is. As you look through this 2017-2018 annual report, you will see examples of the diverse accomplishments from across the college spectrum and note the strong role collaboration and innovation have played in each. It’s due to the strength of our partnerships with our passionate students, our engaged employees, and our supportive city officials, local businesses, and service organizations, that we have come so far in such a relatively short time. As we move into the 2018-2019 academic year, our goals remain steadfast; we are determined to increase student success and close the equity gap (although, I would argue that you cannot do one without the other). I’m pleased to report that we are making strides in both of these areas. Over this last year, we have seen an increase in our course success rate (75%, up from last year’s 73%), degree completion (727, up from 589), certificate completion (564, up from 268), and transfer (538, up from 491). In terms of equity, our percentage of students of color has increased from 39% in 2016-17 to 41% in 2017-18. These are encouraging indicators of widespread change that we are seeing in public higher education. But we can do more. As Michael Josephson, one of the foremost authorities on ethics, said, “Take pride in how far you’ve come. Have faith in how far you can go, but don’t forget to enjoy the journey.” It’s a joy and privilege to be partnering with you as the college embarks on the next leg of our adventure.

The Harris Center for the Arts Exploring the world of ideas through science, politics, literature, and the broader culture, the first full season of the Folsom Lake College Speakers Series brought some noted presenters to Stage One. These unique learning opportunities invited Harris Center patrons and Folsom Lake College students to join stimulating evenings of thoughtful commentary – always informative and at times provocative.

SEPTEMBER 2017

Folsom Lake College

Speakers Series

By provoking thoughtful conversations around some of the most compelling issues, stories, and events of our time, the Folsom Lake College Speaker Series supports the college’s vision of its role within the community – to inspire all to become socially responsible global citizens – one seminar at a time.

DEA Special Agents Javier Peña and Steve Murphy (pictured here with Harris Center Annual Members Dan and Misty Dailey), who inspired the Golden Globe nominated series NARCOS, shared their experiences that led to the capture and downfall of the world’s first narco-terrorist, Pablo Escobar.

JANUARY 2018 Jeffrey Toobin (pictured here with Harris Center Executive Dave Pier and Student Senate President Zainub Tayeb), a legal analyst for CNN and The New Yorker and the bestselling author of The Nine: Inside the Secret World of the Supreme Court and The Run of His Life: The People v. O.J. Simpson, brought some of today’s headlines from the page to the stage.

MARCH 2018 Noted athlete and advocate Diana Nyad’s words proved particularly relevant and moving in the #MeToo era that rocked the country and the world in early 2018. Five outstanding student-athletes (including Women’s Soccer member Britney Johnson, pictured here with Diana) also received complimentary tickets to this motivational event, thanks to the Office of Philanthropy’s President’s Fund.

Our Vision Folsom Lake College opens minds and doors through the power of education, inspiring all students to become socially responsible global citizens.

Our Mission Folsom Lake College enriches and empowers all students to strengthen our community by bridging knowledge, experience, and innovation. Folsom Lake College, serving the diverse communities of eastern Sacramento and western El Dorado counties, offers educational opportunities and support for students to transfer to four-year institutions, to improve foundational skills, to achieve career goals, and to earn associate degrees or certificates.

Our Commitment to Equity Education should belong to everyone. To nourish this inclusion, FLC champions equity, diversity, social justice, and environmental sustainability as foundational to academic, campus, and community life. We work with the communities we serve toward just and fair inclusion into society in which all people can participate, prosper, and reach their full potential. We commit to equity driven decision-making, planning, and reflective processes that are responsive to the diverse identities and experiences in our community. We seek to empower marginalized voices, nurture our many identities and social circumstances, foster cultural responsiveness, and stand against all manifestations of discrimination, including (but not limited to) those based on: ability statuses, age, ancestry, body size, citizenship/immigration status, economic status, educational status, employment status, ethnicity, food/housing insecurity, gender, gender identity, gender expression, incarceration experience, language, marital/partner status, military/veteran status, national origin, neurodiversity, political affiliation, pregnancy/ reproductive status, race/racial identity, religion, sex, and sexual orientation.
