SUPPORT OUR STUDENT VETERANS!

RETURNING VETERANS FACE A NEW REALITY Transitioning from active duty back to school has its challenges. Student veterans return from a military regimentation to: • • • • • • •

Securing affordable housing Enrolling in college Completing complicated forms Applying for GI benefits Getting classes Buying expensive text books Waiting for the first GI bill payment

By last count, the FLC student veteran population included 220 men and women mostly in their late 20s. Sixty percent of them are married with a family to support. Many haven’t been in school for a number of years. Despite these challenges, they are now back in school on the GI bill, anxious to pursue higher education goals. Many FLC veterans have service-related disabilities as well as additional needs like tutoring, mentoring, learning challenges, affordable housing and child care.

FINANCIAL CHALLENGES Like most college students, student veterans are working and studying. While the GI bill helps, financial help is needed before GI benefits are received. No benefits are paid during school breaks. Sometimes, our veterans are forced to drop out of school to work and then re-enroll at a later date.

MAKE AN IMMEDIATE IMPACT You can help by giving: • An annual donation from your organization • Individual donations • Support for our fundraising events • Matching employer gifts

HOW WE SUPPORT OUR VETERANS Veterans Success Center (VSC): Staffed by veterans, offers study space, a place to relax, peer to peer counseling, and more. The FLC Administrative Staff provides: • Assistance in registration • Help with GI benefits • Counseling The Office of Philanthropy provides: • Emergency grants • Text book stipends • Paid parking permits
