The Hungry Heifer throws open their doors for business in Raymond

Razor clam digs on all coastal beaches remain closed

The recreational razor clam season on all coastal beaches remains closed until further notice, shellfish managers with the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) announced Friday.

Razor clam test results released on December 23 indicate domoic acid levels on all beaches remain above the health guidelines for safe consumption set by Washington Department of Health (WDOH) officials.

“While many had to change their holiday razor clamming plans, we are looking forward to some many excellent digging opportunities in the months ahead,”

The Hungry Heifer held their ribbon cutting ceremony recently on December 3 with family and friends to celebrate.

County ranked eighth in election turnout

SOUtH BEnD – The 2022 General Election was certified by Pacific County Auditor Joyce Kidd on November 29. Pacific County has a total of 16,878 registered voters with 12,068 ballots cast in the 42 precincts for a voter turnout of 71.5 percent, which ranked eighth in The Evergreen State. San Juan County was first at 78.25%.

There was one major upset in Pacific County when Daniel C. Garcia (R) upended incumbent Sheriff Robin Souvenir (I), and it wasn't even close. Garcia gathered 55.81 percent of the vote compared to only 43.62 for Souvenir.

Two other local incumbents were defeated soundly.

South Bend City Council Meeting

Advice on burglaries in the area

During the November 28, 2022, South Bend City Council meeting, South Bend Police Chief Stigall mentioned that there were some burglaries in the area. Some of the thieves got away with some equipment and some with money.

He had some suggestions for people concerned about the thefts. “I would just advise people to make sure things are locked up,” Stigall said. “Another thing that would be really, really helpful is if people had cameras on their homes. I know the cost associated with that is the reason people don't have them, but they are relatively cheap to get.” He suggested that even just little, inexpensive cameras would help.

Seagulls thump Monte, topped by Rainier

Raymond took down Class 1A Montesano before getting blasted by Rainier in boys basketball last week.

Morgan Anderson shot in 23 points to lead the Seagulls past host Montesano 60-47 last Wednesday, Anderson tallied a doubledouble by taking down 10 boards.

“Our trip to Montesano was a successful one as we once again used a good second half to get the win,” Raymond HS Head boys basketball Coach told the Herald. “We were able to tighten up our defense a little better in the second half, and we were able to run a few sets to get us good looks on offense.

“Morgan Anderson had

another big game for us with several key buckets and free throws in the second half,' Tully added. “We had good, balanced scoring with Kai Heuy and Talan Yearout.”

The Seagulls shot 51 percent on 24 of 49. Kai Heuy and Talen Yearout (6 rebs) provided 10 points apiece. Anderson also provided 4 steals.

Raymond took care of the basketball while only turning it over 9 times.

The Seagulls were in front 13-11 after one quarter and the teams were locked up in a 25-25 tie at halftime.

Raymond took control in the third quarter by outscoring the Bulldogs 17-9 in the third frame. The Gulls won the fourth quarter 18-13. With the loss, Monte -

Ilwaco runs past Valley

Willapa Valley found the going difficult against Class 2B Ilwaco during a 65-41 defeat last Tuesday (Dec. 20) night on the Lady Fishermen's home court. Grace Huber scored 15 points to lead Willapa Valley.

Turnovers killed the vikings, as they gave the ball back to IHS 27 times.

Ilwaco soared off to a 26-8 first quarter lead and were ahead 37-20 after two quarters and 49-33 heading into the final eight minutes, also won by the home team, 16-8.

The Vikings shot 42 percent (13 of 36) on the night.

Also scoring for the Vikings were Brooklyn Patrick (9), Lauren Matlock (8) and Lauren Emery (7). Huber collected 5 rebounds and Patrick had 4 assists.

The loss snapped a four-game winning streak for WVHS, now 6-2. Ilwaco moved to 5-1 on the season.

Willapa Valley hosts the Jack Q. Pearson Holiday Tournament Thursday and Friday with games versus Toutle Lake (5-3)and Adna (7-1). Rival Naselle (1-3) visits the Vikes for a Columbia Valley League game Monday.

Five Games on Tap for Vikings

The Willapa Valley (5-0) boys have games against four very different teams. The Vikes played against Tenino (5-1) at Tenoski Gym Friday night. The Vikings then go to Napavine (4-2) Tuesday and host their own tournament with games versus Morton-White Pass (7-0) Thursday and Adna (7-1) Friday before hosting Naselle (2-5) Tuesday.

sano dropped to 1-6 on the season.

Rainier 60, Gulls 36 Rainier took charge in the third quarter to run away from Raymond 60-36 Thursday night at Seagull gym. Anderson netted 17 points for the home team.

“We had a tough night on both ends of the floor,” Coach Tully told the Herald. “We hung around for a half, but cold shooting and tired legs did us in in the second half. Rainier's ball pressure gave us trouble all night. We got a little careless with the ball and just didn't execute as well as we needed to. Hopefully we can clean some things up before our games next week.”

Raymond entertains Hoquiam (6-1) and Tenino

(5-1) in its New Year's Classic last night and tonight (5:30 pm). The Seagulls visit North Beach (0-5) Tuesday.

Against Rainier, Raymond trailed 11-9 after one quarter stop and 28-20 after two quarters of play. Rainier outscored the Seagulls 22-5 in the third quarter for an insurmountable edge at 5023 entering the final eight minutes.

Raymond shot as cold as the weather 32 percent (15 of 51) from the floor. The Gulls gave the ball away 16 times.

Skyler Hutson (3 steals) scored 10 points and Yearout hauled in 11 rebounds.

The Mountaineers upped their mark to 4-3 while RHS slipped to 5-4 on the season.

Loggers deliver 58-46 defeat on SBHS boys

Onalaska defeated South Bend 58-48 in boys basketball last Tuesday (Dec. 20) at Koplitz Field House. Senior Jacob Carlson led SBHS in scoring with 15 points.

“We played our tails off,” SBHS Head Boys Basketball Coach Taylor Graves told the Herald. “We were smart with the ball, having about half the turnovers we normally do. They got out to a lead on us and we could never gain on it. That early lead by Onalaska was the difference in the game.

“We are coming into our own though,” Graves added. “I see a lot of good things and some good chemistry in the team. Things are starting to trend upward even if our record doesn't reflect that.”

South Bend HS junior Josh Flynn (6 assists, 6 rebs)

scored 13 points and junior Branson Williams added 12. Senior Ty Reidinger pulled down 14 rebounds and junior Ferrill Johnson handed out 5 assists.

South Bend shot 44 percent from the field on 19 of 50 and committed 18 turnovers.

Onalaska is now 3-5 on the young season.

South Bend has games against three very good teams coming up. After opening the season with a victory, South Bend has dropped six straight heading into last night's game versus Tenino (5-1) at the Raymond Classic. The Maroon and Gold go up against Hoquiam (6-0) tonight at the Raymond Classic before hosting Chief Leschi (5-1) Tuesday. South Bend's (1-6) home game against Winlock (3-4) on December 22 was postponed.

Scholastic Chess Championships held at Centralia College

Youth from 6-12 grades are invited to compete in the Southwest Washington High School and Middle School Chess Championships, to be held Saturday, February 4 at Centralia College. Students of all skill levels are welcome to play.

Both tournaments are regional championships, limited to students in western Washington who reside south and west of King County. The high school championship is both an individual and team event. Winning high school teams qualify to play in the 57th annual Washington State High School Chess Team Championships, to be held March 4 at Stanwood High School.

Normally teams qualify for State out of their high school chess league. Last March, Regional Qualifying Tournaments were approved to provide a path to State for areas without a high school chess league, such as Lewis and Pacific Counties.

Both the middle school and high school tournaments are offered free of charge, courtesy of the Washington

High School Chess Association and the Chess Enrichment Association, two non-profits helping to bring the benefits of chess to students.

Advance entry is required. Beginners are welcome. To enter, visit whsca.org for further details on each tournament.

Freeman drills in 45 points in one-point setback

By GEORGE KUNKE, geoakunke@gmail.com

Raymond suffered a one-point defeat at home game versus Rainier 61-60 Thursday night in girls basketball. Karsyn Freeman turned in a colossal performance with 45 points.

Raymond head coach Jason Koski told the Herald it was a “great effort by our kids after being down by 12 in the first half and surviving a 22-point second quarter by Rainier,” adding, the “girls made a strong finish in the fourth quarter giving themselves a chance to win with three seconds to go but couldn’t make the shot needed to come away with the victory.”

Kassie Koski netted 9 points and grabbed 7 rebounds for RHS.

Raymond (4-4) hosts its New Year's Classic Tuesday and Wednesday with games against Hoquiam and Tenino. North Beach visits RHS on Jan. 4.

Cardinals fly past South Bend

By GEORGE KUNKE, geoakunke@gmail.com

SOUTH BEND – Winlock whipped visiting South Bend 60-36 last Wednesday night in a non-league matchup. Ava Pine led SBHS in scoring with 13 points.

“Tonight we had a slow offensive start that we just couldn't come back from,” SBHS head coach Jon Schray told the Herald. “Kelly had a good night offensively, and kept us busy trying to defend her drive and jump shot. Peppers' post play was also very good. I am pleased with the improvements that we have made so far this season, and I know that we are on the way to reaching our potential.”

Senior Radyn Morley tore down 11 rebounds and Eighth grader Avalyn Stigall scored 8 points for SBHS.

South Bend committed 33 turnovers and shot 31 percent from the floor.

The Cardinals led 10-6 after one quarter, 29-15 at intermission and 45-27 entering the fourth quarter.

Statewide, Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (D-Washougal) upset far right Republican Joe Kent, which flipped a seat in the District 3 Congressional U.S. Representative race, previously held by Republican Jaime Herrera Beutler, who was ousted from the general in the primary.

Gluesenkamp Perez won only two of the seven counties, but Clark and Pacific counties put her over the top. In Pacific County, she gathered 50.9 percent compared to 48.75 for Kent.

Statewide, Gluesenkamp Perez beat Kent 50.1449.31.

In the contest for State Representative Position 2 in Legislative District 19, statewide incumbent Republican Joel McEntire of Cathlamet won in a romp over Democrat Cara Cusack of Chehalis 61.42 percent to 38.46, but in the county, it was much closer, 53.91% to 45.92%.

In Legislative District 19 in the race for State Representative Position 1, Aberdeen incumbent Republican Jim Walsh won easily over Kelli Hughes-Ham (D-Ilwaco), 54.25 percent to 45.63 in the county and 62.17-37.72 throughout the state.

Murray Wins State; Smiley Took County

It wasn't much of a surprise that U.S. Senator Patty

Murray (D-Seattle) won reelection on the Federal level, but it was rather shocking that she won by such a large margin statewide over Republican Tiffany Smiley (RRichland), 57.15%-to-42.63%. Smiley actually carried Pacific County, 51.39 percent to 48.32.

In the statewide race for secretary of state, Democrat Steve Hobbs of Lake Stevens defeated Julie Anderson (non-partisan-Tacoma), 49.77 percent to 45.82 percent. However, Anderson carried the county, 54.39%-to43.66%. Hobbs replaced Republican Kim Wyman, who accepted a position in the Biden administration.

Uncontested Races

Five county wide local races with only one candidate were elected, including South Bend's Joyce Kidd (no party), who is now retiring from the auditor's position; South Bend's Renee L. Goodin (treasurer) no party; South Bend's Emma Rose (county clerk), Independent, who replaces longtime clerk, Virginia Leach, who retired; Bruce Walker (no party), Raymond (assessor,), and prosecuting attorney Michael Rothman (R-Raymond).

There were also two local judicial positions for district court judge that had only one candidate, including north district court (Scott Harmer, South Bend) and Nancy R. McAllister (Ilwaco).
