eggcellent weekend ahead
By Lynnette HoffmanEgg Day weekend is finally upon us and the Egg Day Committee has been hard at work to bring you the best Egg Day ever. There will be the coronation, the big parade and a lot of vendors along with the usual street dance at the Club to finish off the evening. What a great eggsperience this will be!
If you are looking for an eggcellent time, you will find it this weekend in Winlock. People come from all over the state to see the parade and catch up with old classmates. It’s truly one big class reunion in Winlock, graduates from many years past come to catch up with others. I’ve seen classmates from every decade at the parade, it’s a wonderful event.
The Grand Marshals for the Winlock Egg Day Parade are Jeff Dorothy, owner of Cattermoles, and Michaelea Gottschalk. They are very active in the community, usually giving back in one way
or another. They have always supported the local senior centers as well as youth sports and other events. Congratulations for being chosen as this year's Grand Marshals!

This year starts with the Friends of the Winlock Library hosting their used book sale at 300 NE 1st Street from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. In the evening, it’s the Winlock Egg Day Coronation at 7:00 p.m. at the Winlock Community Building. This will be the evening they crown the new Egg Day Queen for 20232024. If you don’t want to attend the coronation, then head on up to the Giddy Up Room where Winlock Dance Center is having line dancing from 7:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at 405 NE First.

Saturday is when most of the events take place. You will have three different places to choose for breakfast, all beginning at 7:00 a.m. The Olequa Senior Center is hosting their annual breakfast at 119 NW Kerron, they always have a

As of today, the weather for Egg Day is cloudy with no showers and a high temperature of 68, perfect parade weather.
The Olequa Senior Center is having their annual Egg Day Breakfast, support your local senior center and head on down anytime after 7:00 a.m. They always have a crowd and it’s the place to go before the parade!
Grand Prairie Designs is having their Summer Solstice Kiln Opening on June 17 and 18 during Egg Day. Richard Roth started his career in Winlock in 1978 and has been showcasing his work since then. If you have never been out to Grand Prairie Designs, it’s located off of South Mili-

tary at 193 Roth Rd. It is a fun place to visit and also converse with Richard and Susan. Richard graduated from Winlock High School, moved to the family farm and has been operating it ever since!
UGA Residents and citizens of Winlock - don’t forget to attend the meeting for the Boundary Review Board on June 20 at 6:00 p.m. This is the meeting that both residents in the UGA and citizens of Winlock should attend. If you have had any issues with the rapid growth, this meeting is for you. The Boundary Review Board is to look at the annexation of the entire UGA into the City of Winlock.

It’s going to be a nice weekend for a parade. I have seen many Toledo residents attend the Egg Day Parade over the years, hope to see everyone there! We are expecting no rain showers and temperatures around 68 degrees (as of today) but we all know the weather around here is very unpredictable.
Toledo Cheese Days is just around the corner. Bonanza BBQ is sponsoring the Car Show this year. It’s always a great car show, with vendors around the car show. I always pick up the BBQ from Bonanza because they are truly the best BBQ around. Any chance I get to eat their BBQ I do, it literally melts in your mouth!
This Cheese Day design
was done by Hope Gould. She designed the Toledo Cheese Day logo with “Where’s the Cheese.” It is an awesome design so if you see her, please congratulate her!
For Cheese Day’s this year, Donna’s Place is hosting Country Music Legend Chris Guenther. Chris is well known in Lewis County and the state for his wide range of country music. It’s always a full house when Chris is in town. Get your tickets early!
Mike Morgan just completed the new sign for Kemp Olson Memorial Park. Mike painted the sign back in 1999 and he gave it a new updated look. Drive by and see Mike’s artwork on the sign, I am pretty sure you will be as happy as the rest of us are!

My name is Jay Crow, I am the 2023 class Valedictorian of Winlock High School. I have attended this high school for all four years, doing Running Start at Centralia College for the last two. I have grown a lot throughout this time frame and each little experience shaped me into who I am today.

For example, my Freshman year was my first year in Winlock; before that, I lived in Elma Washington for six months, and before that, Florida. It was a massive change for me and it took a lot of adapting to this new environment with no prior knowledge of anyone in the community. Small towns are usually tight-knit and well-established, so I was worried I might not fit in; nonetheless, everyone was very kind and I made friends quickly. This was one of the many things that challenged me through my high school journey, and I believe everyone faces those kinds of challenges in their own experience.

My plans for the near future are to continue my education at Centralia College in pursuit of a Bachelor’s degree in Behavioral Healthcare. A long-term goal of mine is to one day be a clinical psychologist in which I can help those in need of mental and emotional support. I have had many friends, family, teachers, and staff along the way to help me on this journey, and I am extremely grateful to be so fortunate.

My path to being named salutatorian as to what I did to get here and my thoughts on actually achieving this is quite simple. I did not expect to be salutatorian as I never really gave it much thought about being either valedictorian or salutatorian. I was always taught to work hard and get good grades in school, which I took a lot more seriously when I started Running Start my junior year. I did want to at least be ranked in the top 5 in my class, which I thought was a good goal for me when I saw that I was ranked 3 at the time I did my college applications. I do feel honored that I am the salutatorian and hope to work hard in the future by trying my best at any obstacle thrown at me. My future plans are quite simple as I plan to go to a four-year college to get a higher education and get a good stable career. I plan on going to UW to get my bachelor's in computer science and then get my master’s after that as I got my associate degree at Centralia College. I hope to achieve this in my fourth year and if by any possibility see if I can cut that time a little shorter by either doing summer classes or doing internships. After graduating I plan on applying to a variety of companies as a software engineer with just getting a stable job at the beginning and hopefully staying in Seattle.

Continued from page 1 hot meal for all to enjoy before the parade. There is also the Rowdy Rooster that is serving up Eggs Benedict and then the Winlock Assembly of God Youth Group is having a breakfast and lunch for attendee’s, located directly behind Timberland Bank.

There are also more activities in the morning, a Garage Sale Swap Meet in the parking lot behind the Rowdy Rooster (503 NE 1st) at 8:00 a.m. as well as the Winlock Custom Car Show. They also will have vendors set up at the grade school from 9:00 a.m. until done. At 9:30 a.m. the Boy Scout Troop 324 will have a parking fundraiser. The Winlock Historical Society will be open on Egg Day from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., they have
been able to purchase items since the last Egg Day so stop in and look around. Winlock Timberland Library is continuing their annual book sale on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Then at 11:00 a.m. the Winlock Egg Day parade with the theme “The Year of the Egg” will go through downtown . Then after the parade, run up to the Rowdy Rooster for one of the most delicious Egg Salad Sandwiches you will ever have. There is something special about those sandwiches, a recipe that has been passed down for generations! Lewis County Fire District 15, located at 609 Kerron NW Kerron will have an open house/Safety Fair immediately after the parade. If you haven’t met the Winlock Fire Department Chief Richard Underdal, this will be your
chance. We have the best fire chief in the county!
Then from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., the Rowdy Rooster Thrift Store will have a sale of 50% off everything, literally everything. The proceeds go to the Winlock-Vader Food Bank. Then you have your choice of events at 1:00 p.m., you can go see the Reptile Roadshow at the Winlock Miller Elementary or go see the kids perform at the Backstage at Winlock Dance Center. I love watching the young kids perform, their hard work is always a showstopper at Egg Day. At 1:00 p.m., the 1970 Mt. St Helens High School graduates are finally having their 50th anniversary, they had to cancel due to COVID. This will be held at the Winolequa Park.
For the evening, there is the annual street dance at the

Club. For most of us who graduated from Mt. St. Helens/ Winlock High School usually hang out at the Club. The Club is celebrating its 90th year in business and they are going all out. They will have Switchback out of Olympia as the band. Paul has owned The Club for the past 11 years. It’s fun to watch all the classmates hanging out, talking about the good ole days!
Also, Boss Hogg’s BBQ will have the band Steel Horses live with a $5 cover charge. Franks Hideaway does not have a band listed, but it’s always a nice break to head to Franks to just chat!

The Egg Day Committee has been hard at work, they have worked hard so all of us can have fun. Whether you are in town for the parade or for the live music, guaranteed there will be fun in Winlock!
