Seventh Annual Derik Nissell Christmas Toy House this Saturday

SOUTH BEND – The spirit of giving is alive and well once again with the Derik Nissell Annual Christmas Toy House. It's not too late to donate new toys for Satur day's event taking place at the Raymond Eagles (215 N. 3rd St.) beginning at 9:00 a.m.

The toys are for all kids in north Pacific County up to the age of 18. There is no preregistration needed to attend. You sign up when you arrive, and it's on a first come, first serve basis.

The Toy House celebration is named in honor of Derik Nissell, who passed away at a young age six years ago. This wonderful event is once again directed by Joyce Kidd, Derik's mother, and Susie Weisel-Webber, who work year-round to help make the event a success. Last year 321 children received toys. Parents can choose two toys per child and stocking stuffers are also available.

Derik always wanted all kids to be re membered, especially at Christmas time. There are so many children that are less fortunate and this is a great way to help kids get a nice toy for Christmas.

“His co-workers talked about the way Derik always brought toys to work for their toy drive,” Joyce said. “When he died his brothers wanted to make something posi tive come from his death. Derik was the kind of person who would bring someone home for Thanksgiving or Christmas if

they didn’t have somewhere to go. One Christmas Eve Derik called to say that he was on his way home with a friend. He asked me to change the tags on some of his gifts so that his friend would have presents on Christmas morning. He was very kind-hearted.”

Even at this late time, donations of toys for the ages of 6 through 13 are still in demand.

“We're happy with anything we get, but what is needed are more toys for kids between the ages of six and 13,” Joyce said.

New, unwrapped toys can be dropped off at the Raymond or South Bend branches of Security State Bank, Pioneer Grocery, Dennis Company or the Audi tor’s Office in the courthouse. If you need your donation to the toy house picked up, please call 942-8722. Monetary donations are also accepted and can be dropped off at Raymond Federal Bank or mailed to PO Box 928, South Bend, 98586.

“Susie and I do a lot of the shopping,” Joyce said. “We shop all year long. If we see something on sale, we're on it. I'll start shopping for next year the day after Christmas.”

Batteries are also supplied with toys requiring them. “We try to make it easy on the parents, so we do supply the batteries,” Joyce said.

In addition to Joyce and Susie, this year's Toy House volunteers include Kathy

More razor clam digs not likely in 2022

SOUTH BEND – Razor clam digs have been frustrat ing diggers because of several cancellations at local beaches the past several weeks. Cer tainly the cancellations have to be made, but to get a better understanding of the causes, the Herald interviewed Re gion 6 Coastal Shellfish Sci entific Technician Bryce Blu menthal with the Washington Game and Fish Department, who offered his expertise about the situation.

People can get violently ill if they consume razor clams with bad domoic acid toxic ity levels.

“The domoic acid toxic ity levels are bad because they are at or above 20 ppm, which is the Washington De partment of Health threshold for safe consumption,” Blu menthal said. “Clams with unsafe levels of domoic acid can cause Amnesic Shellfish Poisoning (ASP), which is an illness that can be as mild as abdominal discomfort and as serious as short-term memory loss, seizures, coma,

and possible death.”

This year's cancellations are actually a little later than in past years.

“This is a little later than we expect these events to oc cur, normally a late spring to early fall window,” Blumen thal said. “You may recall we had a large bloom two Octobers ago. The shut down was so large the fishery was closed until May. “Usually when we hit the cold winter months with large ocean storms, the worry of a do moic acid closure is less of a concern,” Blumenthal said.

It doesn't look very prom ising that there will be any razor clam digs this season.

“We organize our season as a fall to spring event, so I’d say it’s very likely that clams will shed this toxin be fore our season ends in May 2023, assuming no further toxicity blooms,” Blumen thal said. “As far as digging before the end of the calendar year 2022, we are hoping that we may have toxicity levels low enough on one or two beaches to open for the December 20 tide series, but

it doesn’t look likely at this point.”

Asked, once the clams are damaged, can they get healthy again? Blumenthal said, “The clams are un harmed by the domoic acid they consume and they are perfectly edible once those toxicity levels have returned to safe levels. Since they are constantly filter feed ing, the toxicity can quickly accumulate in their fleshy tissue and it can then take a considerable amount of time to dissipate.

Raymond POOL needs donations

To the Editor,

The DR o.R. Nevitt PooL has been a large part of the history of Raymond for many years. it has helped teach the youth in our community to swim for decades and has of fered the community a place to maintain physical fitness, offered youth work oppor tunities and has given us a place to meet for parties and fun! We have a few goals for next year that include some painting and clean up, but we’ll need some help to get started. There are still costs of utilities and such through the winter and start up funds will be needed to get us started in May.

Without the community’s support and financial as sistance we will be unable to maintain the facility’s large utility payments and operate the current programs while maintaining safety and fun environment for pool patrons.

We are sincerely grateful to the community for all of their support in the past years. We look forward to offering Services at the Raymond PooL for years to come!

Vikings open with 42-22 rout at Toledo

Willapa Valley got off on a good note with a solid 42-22 victory at Toledo in girls basketball Saturday night. Defense and playing aggressively were the keys to the victory

“It was a nice team win for us,” WVHS head coach John Peterson told the Herald from his home Sunday morning. “Anytime you go to Toledo, which tradition ally has a great program, and get a win, is great. It was a really physical game; they kinda beat on us a little bit. They beat the tar out of us – that's a good thing. It's good to play games like that. Playing against bigger and stronger people makes you better. We rebounded pretty well, and we had some balanced scoring. We were ag gressive; we went to the hoop. I can't fault our effort. We played really hard.”

The Vikings held the Riverhawks to single-digit scoring in every quarter (8-3, 11-2, 11-8 and 12-9). “We played great defense; they had only five points at half time,” Peterson said. “Overall, we held 'em to 22 points.

I'm very pleased to play defense the way we played.”

Coach Peterson talked about the play of some of his student-athletes.

Brooklyn Patrick, a senior, dished off 3 assists and stole the ball 3 times. “Brook did a nice, nice job for us,” Peterson said. She's a good basketball player.

“Matlock, for a freshman, played really well; she's really athletic, and was all over the place.”

Grace Huber, a senior, who returned to basketball this season, took down 10 rebounds and blocked 2 shots. “Grace Huber led us in rebounding and she played good defense.

Gaby Quezada (senior) also returned to the program after not playing last season. “Gaby Quezada played ter rific; she was really aggressive going to the basket.

“We lost four starters from last year,” Peterson said. “The kids that stepped in did a really, really nice job. Our bench, Addison Merkel (soph) and Rilyn Channell (ninth grader) gave us good minutes. Channell played only six or seven minutes and scored 6 points. She can

Two wrestlers win titles at invite

The Willapa Harbor Tri-District Wrestling Team competed with ap proximately one-third of its squad Saturday at the Ocosta Invitational and still came up with two cham pions, including Lucas "Spud" Swogger at 145 pounds and Nina Siribun in the girls 235 division. Swogger won all three of his matches by fall.

“Missing over two-thirds of the team due to football post-season and sickness, Willapa Harbor had a great showing,” Head coach Pres ton Crow told the Herald “You can tell Lucas and

Nina have put in the work in the off-season. Lucas looked confident and is just adding to an exciting last year's eighth grade season and freestyle season.”

Coach Crow assessed some of his grapplers that competed at the invite.

“Chayton Phelps (3-1 at 195) wrestled his way to third place, nearly losing a semifinal match against a tough opponent,” Coach Crow said. “Max Crow (2-2 at 160) suffered an injury and a loss in his semifinal match against a tough league opponent from Rainier, but battled to beat his next opponent before injury defaulting

Seagulls whip Ony, lose at Tenino

Raymond opened the cage season with a 69-50 home victory over Onalaska last Tuesday (Nov. 29). Senior sharpshooter Morgan Anderson fired in 26 points on 10 of 14 shooting for the Seagulls

Senior Skyler Hutson pumped in 15 points. Hutson hit 5 of 8 from downtown.

Talen Yearout (8 points) pulled down 9 rebounds and Anderson grabbed 8. Anderson made 6 steals and sophomore Christopher Quintana handed out 4 assists

Raymond shot 46 percent (27 of 59) from the floor and connected on 7 of 12 free throws. The Gulls com mitted 15 turnovers.

The Seagulls led 13-11 after the first quarter, 33-19 at halftime and 54-34 heading into the final frame.

“It was good to get the season started with a win,” RHS head coach Mike Tully told the Herald. “We shot the ball exceptionally well for a first game, espe cially Morgan Anderson and Skyler Hutson. Morgan had a great first game.

“We played well defensively at times as well,” Tully added. “Both teams were a little leg-weary with a number of players on both teams coming off of quarterfinal football teams.”

Tenino 51, RHS 37

Raymond took to the road to Tenino last Wednes day and were defeated by Tenino 51-37.

“It was definitely a tale of two halves against Tenino on Wednesday,” Coach Tully told the Herald

to a fourth-place finish. Kevin Hovis (3-2 at 138) led the charge for the strong underclassman group, tak ing fifth place. New arrival from east of the mountains Conner Reyes (3-3 at 160) finished sixth with tough draws against two return ing state wrestlers to take sixth place. The Davison brothers, Leon (1-2 at 160) and Andrew (1-3 at 195), both came away with a big upset win. Freshman An drew ended in sixth place while Leon ended up tied for seventh.”

Coach is looking for ward to a full team.

“Willapa Harbor is looking to have a great

year once everyone comes back,” Coach Crow said. “The underclassman looks to be solid, while the up perclassmen leadership of Tyson Portmann and Max Crow tighten the ship up.

“The new addition of Stephen Smith as an assis tant coach has added a new level of perspective to the team,” Coach Crow added. “Being a transfer coach from the east of the moun tain, he brings insight into what Willapa Harbor will see in the postseason.”

The next competition for Willapa Harbor is Warren ton, Ore. Invitational this Friday (girls) and Saturday (boys).

Lady Seagulls open with a victory

Raymond crushed Onalaska 52-29 last Wednesday on the road to open the basketball season before dropping its game at home against Napavine Friday night.

“It was nice to get the season started with a 'W',” RHS head coach Jason Koski told the Herald. “After a slug gish first quarter defensively and a switch in schemes, we started limiting Onalaska’s shots at the hoop and we were able to generate some easy transition baskets.

“Alia Enlow was big on the boards with nine to go with her five steals,” Koski added.

“Kyndal Koski had a nice all-around game scoring in double figures (10 pts) and adding five steals and five assists,” Coach Koski said.

Sophomore Karsyn Freeman was tops for the Lady Seagulls in scoring with 16 markers. She also gathered 5 steals.

Also scoring for RHS were ninth grader Kassie Koski (6), senior Alia Enlow (6), and ninth graders Megan Kong bouakhay (5), Emma Glazier (5) and Ava Baugher (4).

“Defensively Megan and Emma did a great job hold ing Onalaska's Brooklyn Sandridge to 10 points,” Koski noted.

Raymond was on top 17-8 after one quarter, 27-13 at intermission and 38-19 after three quarter stops.

Raymond committed only 8 turnovers.

“Our youth will be tested Friday when Napavine comes to town,” Coach Koski added.

really shoot it.”

Valley did commit too many turnovers with 18 and shot only 32 percent (12 of 37) from the field. The Vikes sank 13 of 24 free throws.

“We shot free throws well in the first half,” Peterson said. “In the second half, part of free throw shooting is being tired. Our conditioning will get better.”

This week, Valley has games with: Columbia Adven tist Academy (home, last night), at Hoquiam (tonight, 5:30), and at Pe Ell, Thursday, 5 pm, JV boys, followed by girls and then boys varsity. The Vikings visit rival South Bend Monday.

“We have a lot of work to do,” Peterson said. “We have to do a better job of taking care of the ball. We missed some close shots under the basket.”

Willapa Valley competes in the Columbias Valley 1B League along with Mossyrock, Naselle, Pe Ell, Colum bia Adventist Academy (Battle Ground), Three Rivers Christian School (Longview), and Washington School for the Deaf (Vancouver).

Obituaries

In Loving Memory of Clarence Moore

Clarence W. Moore died on November 16, 2022 in his home in South Bend, Washington.

Clarence was born December 24, 1933 in Smithfield, North Carolina to Clarence H. Moore and Margaret C Kemple. He graduated from Princeton High School in North Carolina in 1953. One of his first jobs was driving the school bus for his route and “garaging” the school bus at his house each night.

After high school Clarence enlisted into the United States Air Force. In his 8 years of service, he was stationed in Texas, Illinois, Oklahoma, Mississippi, Germany, South Dakota and Washington D.C. During his time in Oklahoma, he met Alta Moore of South Bend and they married on December 17, 1955.

The family moved to South Bend and Clarence soon started working as an auto mechanic at the Ford garage in Raymond, then was the transportation supervisor for the South Bend School District, and was an industrial truck and off-road equipment mechanic in Raymond and Centralia before retiring in June of 1996.

He enjoyed spending his time tending to his immaculate, manicured yard, doing crosswords, and organizing everything from the linen closet to his DVD collection. In his earlier years, he liked motorcycle riding in the woods or beach, taking weekend camping trips and telling jokes. He loved to make people laugh and also get a chuckle as well. We will miss his stories and his jokes he liked to tell.

Clarence is preceded in death by the love of his life, Alta Moore, his parents and his two sisters Shirley Cayton and Ann Hobbs. He is survived by his sisters Kathleen Forehand (Tom Forehand) of Hampstead, NC and Rose Swart of Bradenton, FL; his sons, Michael Moore, Gregory Moore and Brian Moore (Micha) of Portland, Oregon and daughters Janet Connery (Marcos Galvin) of South Bend, Washington and Lynette Moore (Tim Witte) of Sharon Springs, New York; 9 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

The Moore family would like to thank the staff of Willapa Harbor Hospital and Harbors Home Health & Hospice for taking such good care of our dad. We also appreciate everyone who looked in on him after mom died, including his granddaughter, Amber Stigall, and Olsen family neighbors for helping with mowing and moving garbage cans weekly. There will be a celebration of life at a later date. Donations may be sent to Willapa Harbor Helping Hands.

High school students invited to submit invasive species art to adorn new trailer

OLYMPIA–The Wash ington Invasive Species Council (WISC) and Wash ington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) invite high school-age digital artists to participate in an art contest that will help spread the word about not spreading invasive species.

Invasive species are plants, animals, and other organisms that don't natu rally live in Washington and, when brought here, can cause economic and environmental harm. Invasive species can outcompete native species for food and habitat and may even eat native species. Once established, they can proliferate and cost a lot of money to control, as well as negatively impact util ity, agriculture and tourism industries.

Public

The winning art from this contest will adorn WDFW's new trailer that travels around Washington State and the Northwest to bring attention to invasive species and their spread. It will also include images of WDFW's invasive mussel-sniffing dogs Puddles and Fin (right). "Staff from both WDFW and WISC travel to many communities to educate people about the dangers of spreading these species from one area to another," said Justin Bush, executive coordinator of WISC. "This trailer will allow them to do that more effectively and bring attention to the issue with its eye-catching art."

The art contest runs now through Dec. 30. Submis sions are required to be in a digital art format, such as graphic designs, photo graphs, illustrations, car toons, digital paintings and more. Submissions must include pictures or informa tion on one or more species that could be, or has been, introduced into our region,

such as quagga and zebra mussels, European green crabs, Eurasian watermilfoil, northern pike, New Zealand Mudsnails and more.

"Those are some of the invasive species of most con cern that can be introduced or spread, but there are many others," said Allen Pleus, WDFW's aquatic invasive species unit manager. "We have worked hard to prevent impacts from these species and are happy to have an additional tool, the trailer, to bring our message to the public."

In addition to having the design made into a trailer wrap, the winner will re ceive a $500 Amazon gift card. A second-place winner will receive a $300 Amazon gift card. Entries will be displayed on the WISC and WDFW websites. For full contest rules, design dimen sions and inspiration, visit either the WISC or WDFW websites.

For more information on invasive species in Washing ton, visit the WISC website.

Coach Koski said his team had “great effort by our team tonight (and) real proud of how hard we com peted against a veteran, skilled and well-coached team.

“The first half we really played hard and seemed to win every 50/50 ball, which led to easy transition baskets,” Koski added. “In the second half we couldn’t quite match the consistency

“In the second half, our legs definitely showed the effects of the previous night's game,” Tully said. “We were only able to make three baskets in the second half.

Morgan Anderson only played four or five minutes in the second half due to foul trouble, which caused us problems on both ends of the floor.

“The game definitely showed us some things we need to work on,” Tully added. “The effort was there, but we need to learn to execute better. Tenino is a tough matchup for us. Their size and length gave us trouble all game. We'll see them
