Celebrate Vader May Day this weekend
first summer festivity in south Lewis County with several more to come.
Vader May Day is a take on the day when May Day flowers used to be left on doorknobs back in the day. As young kids, we made May Day baskets, put flowers in them and hung them on all our neighbors' doors, a tradition that is long past.
Erik Gaylor, wins 2nd in competition
Erick Gaylor, a junior at Winlock High School, recently competed in a welding competition held at Lower Columbia College on April 20 at 7:30 p.m. It was a team event and they needed two students, but Erick was allowed to go solo and garnered the title of sec-
ond place against Kelso that has one of the best programs and other larger schools.

the beginning of summer fun
By LynnEttE Hoffman
It’s the beginning of the festival season for all of us in south Lewis County. Each of our small cities has their own festivals to celebrate something unique about our cities.
Napavine has the FunTime Festival, Winlock has Egg Days, Toledo has Cheese Days and Vader has May Winlock Dance Center showing off a routine for the parade crowd in 2022.

bring you the best.
The Vader May Day Committee does not have royalty this year, but Kelly Schey stated “Sadly we won't have royalty this year, however, we do have a volunteer who will have a booth set up at or near the old jail located in Werden Park, that will feature Past Vader May Day Queens and Royalty along with a sign up sheet for any youth who would be interested in running for next years Vader May Day Court! They will also have a limited number of Vader history books available for a $25 donation that will go back into the Vader Parks.”
They have a few new events planned for this year, Kelly continued, “We can expect an ‘Out
of this World’ experience! Awaken Coffee will be one of many new vendors joining us this year. We have heard that some community members are interested in creating a new local car show group!” A nice coffee drink to walk around with sounds like the start of a great day!
There are some events that the kids can enjoy, Kelly stated, “As for our free kids games, you'll see alot of our classics made new with our space theme. This year we'll see Alien Knock Down, Moon Rock Toss and more!”
There are so many wonderful things to enjoy during this special day, Kelly continued, “There are so many things going on!
We have the parade that
starts at 11:00 a.m. Parade entries and winners will be announced and awarded at the MC Table on A Street as they walk by. The Winlock Dance Center will be performing the May Pole Dance. We'll have a live band, Stormin Norman playing at Werden Park. As for May Day Fundraisers there will be this year's new May Day Buttons ($1 each) and t-shirts featuring winning artwork by Ron Gaul, and will also be selling last year's shirts and buttons. There will be ticket sales for two cords of wood and vendor donated items. And of course, the cake walk will all be there. All of this helps to pay for the event costs.”
Vader is a unique little city. They know they don’t
always have the resources, but they aren’t afraid to go outside their community to ask for help. Kelly continued, “We are very thankful for the help we have received from all of our community members from Vader, Ryderwood, Toledo, and Winlock. We will be accepting cake and baked goods donations on the day of the event for the cake walk. Foodwise, in addition to the coffee stand, Little Crane Cafe will be set up along with a taco truck and icecream food vendors. And of course there will be a girls and boys bike raffle happening over by The Little Crane area.”
May Day Secretary
Kirstyn Miller stated, “that she's looking for-

Mayor Joe Schey stated, “The biggest of thank yous to the May Day Committee must be given for the work they've done this year. This small group of volunteers is composed of people that live both inside and outside of Vader. They represent the true definition of community and we are grateful for their service. Please
come and enjoy the great day they have planned and say thank you to them if you get a chance!”
There are many new people in our area, if you have not been to Vader May Day, please stop by. It’s a fun day filled with a lot of happy people walking around being kind to each other, it’s a community day where everyone is happy to be there. “In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judea, And saying, repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand” (Matthew 3:1,2). The question might get asked, why was John having to preach in the wilderness and not closer to where the people were worshiping?
“Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judea, and all the region round about Jordan, and were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins” (V. 5,6). The temple was known to be in Jerusalem, but here we see those round about Jordan and all Judea more interested in what was being taught in the wilderness. Like today, the professed church was losing its influence. It is perceived, only the church has the authority to baptize, and that priests must be involved in the forgiveness of major sin. But in the example of John the Baptist, he was baptizing and offering the forgiveness of sin through the One he called the Lamb of God (John 1:29) none of which was sanctioned by the Sanhedrin, this, the highest ruling power in the church. John was presenting to the people present truth as it related to the coming Messiah. The church at Jerusalem had not studied into the recent events of the past that pointed to their nation’s Deliverer. A slumbering congregation will prepare a church to think lightly of present-day truth, but when inquired of, causes division and eventually persecution. “And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and threescore days” (Revelation 12:6). These prophetic words have been fulfilled. “Therefore rejoice, ye heavens, and ye that dwell in them…And when the dragon saw that he was cast unto the earth, he persecuted the woman which brought forth the man child. And to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness, into her place, where she is nourished for a time, and half a time, from the face of the serpent” (v.12-14). The serpent and the dragon are one, Satan is the author of all persucution. To avoid persucution, the wilderness affords a sanctuary where truth and righteousness, in a nourishing way, provides spiritual fortitude. “And they overcame him by the blood of
the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto death” (v.11). All this took place soon after Christ’ ascension, the true church was feeding upon the Lamb, the lamb represented and supplied at each Passover. Hundreds of years later, the wilderness provided a refuge for true believers when the early Christian church, or the mother church, transitioned to what we see today. Today’s Catholic faith reflects little of the teachings of that early Christian church. Instead, what the Catholic church does reflect, is the garb worn and acted out in the priesthood of the Old Testament, similar to the Jewish faith. There has been a transition, it happened when Christ came to this earth and took the place of the lamb, this did away with the need for priest and their extravagant synagogues. When truth is no longer allowed a place within the four walls of the church, the wilderness provides a place where the Word of Inspiration may be published and stored in receptive hearts. The storehouse of truth is the place where truth will be heard, that it might be stored in each inquiring mind. This is why the church provides pews, so the people can sit and listen to God’s word. We’ve all heard the saying, you can’t give what you don’t have. This is what that saying is referring to. In other words, the church is no longer the storehouse if the peculiar faith once delivered to the saints is no longer a part of its teaching platform, its impossible for the church to present what it doesn’t cherish. Truth is to transform practitioners into the likeness of what Eden lost. Before sin, Adam and Eve represented the righteousness of their Creator perfectly. This same righteousness is being offered to each one of Adam’s descendants in the gift of God’s Son. Jesus came to this world that He might present to His created the perfect love of His Father’s righteousness. For this, Jesus was persecuted. Nothing has changed, righteousness will always be persecuted while a pretense will always be advocated for, even praised. Righteousness will be found in the true church, while a pretense is found promoting, pretending to be what it is not, today we call this behavior politics. Politics always presents the pretense of right doing.

Continued from page 1 works at Winlock School District in the Metal Shop helping students get their CTE credits. CTE is where students earn Career and Technical Education such as welding and other technical types of education.
“Kelso’s welding program led by Lance Ganieany is almost in a league of their own,” said Ryan. “So coming in second place to them is as good as taking first in my eyes, especially coming within 10 points of them. Ericks ambitions as an adult are unclear at the moment. He likes welding and has considered a career in welding. But something that he’s even better at than that is teaching. Many of his fellow students come to him seeking advice, instruction and approval, especially from the underclassmen. They really look up to him. I myself am a capable welder, but even my abilities have grown exponentially by his instruction. So the father in me is trying hard to encourage him into a career in education. What could be more satisfying than being able to continue doing something you enjoy all the while helping shape the minds and careers of hundreds of students? With the shortage of CTE teachers in this day and age, I don’t think it would take him long to find a place to plant roots. There are a lot of positive changes coming to Winlock schools and I look forward to what next year brings. Perhaps we can unseat the current champs and when we
show up to welding competitions other schools will be like ‘uh oh, Winlock’s here, this is going to be tough!’”
Erick enjoys welding and “seeing the finished product of something I built,” he said. He was very happy with winning 2nd place, he continued, “It felt good considering I had less than 24 hours to prepare for very specific events. If I had more time to practice I feel like I could have won 1st.”
There is a lot to do when going to another school for a tournament,
Erick stated his biggest challenge is, “There’s a lot to unpack in that question because there are so many variables. I would say that knowing what sort of amperage and welding style to use with the type and thickness of metal you are welding together.”
Erick is involved in helping other students but what would he say to a student that is not involved, we got him to answer that question, he stated, “The options in the welding industry are almost limitless and the

Continued from page 5 income is good but it’s a lot of hard work at first so do not get discouraged when your first welds look bad. Everyone’s first welds look terrible.”
Even though the entire event was fun for Erick, he had his favorite moment, he stated, “Definitely the FCAW (flux-core arc welding) which I had never done prior to the competition. So I guess to amend my answer to your second question about winning 2nd place, I was also proud of myself considering that I had never done any FCAW.” For not doing any to win 2nd place is quite an accom-
plishment. We took a few minutes out to ask Ryan, Erick’s Dad some questions. It is interesting that his son is into welding, Ryan stated, “Erick sort of stumbled into it. He was in love with FFA and needed an Ag class to be in it. So welding was the first thing that crossed his path and he was a natural at it and so he kept with it.” How did dad feel after his son took 2nd place, Ryan continued, “To say I was proud would be an understatement. Some of the other schools that were there have welding programs that could easily rival the local colleges. To
come in second to them is as good as first in my book. Especially considering the short notice we had.”
To any parent who is interested in getting their child involved in welding, Ryan had this advice, “To be encouraging and teach them patience. The first thing welding students will do is what we call stacking beads. And it’s very tedious but makes the difference between a weld that holds and one that fails. The reward is worth the work as there are so many fields that need welders. There's much more than just welding pipe and broken metal together. I have
a friend who welds on research equipment down in Antarctica and Greenland that requires a unique skill set and he easily brings home a year's worth of pay in 4 to 6 months time. He also gets bragging rights about having been to Antarctica.”
Erick was able to go to a competition, go solo, which is usually a team sport, and take 2nd place against a school that has an outstanding program. I would say this young man has quite the future in welding. Congratulations Erick, you made Winlock proud!

A newspaper is the voice of the people and that is exactly what it has been doing, speaking for us! The mayor wants a state sponsored newspaper, where he can tell you what he wants you to read.
I asked the mayor and council why the city contradicted their promise of sidewalk safety and comfort for Winlock families (Chronicle Feb 16, 2022). Don’t the thirty-two Oak Street development families deserve the safety of sidewalks? He responded by calling me a jackass. Maybe he should be more concerned about the safety of the citizens than name calling. The argument is lost when name calling begins.
If you can find the audio link, you’ll be able to hear the mayor and council for yourself. And why Oak Street doesn’t have sidewalks.
My Winlock friends and neighbors, you deserve better.

Announcing Winlock Egg Days Royal Court
The Winlock Egg Days Royal Court is a group of individuals who are selected through a pageant competition to represent the community of Winlock, and serve as ambassadors for the Egg Days Festival throughout the year. The members of the royal ccourt typically include an Egg Days Queen or King, as well as several attendants or princesses.
The Royal Court is an important part of the Egg Days Festival, and members of the court often participate in parades, community service projects, and other events leading up to the festival. The goal of the Royal Court is to promote community involvement and engagement, and to provide a positive experience for contestants and their families.

Pinkerton
Hello! My name is Claire Pinkerton, and I am running for 2023 Egg Days Queen. I am 14 years old and have had the pleasure of calling Winlock home since I was three. What I love most about living in Winlock is my family heritage and our long ties here to the community. I am proud to say that I am the sixth generation to live here on my family’s farm. I am an artist and a musician. I play the flute in the Winlock Concert Band and I am also a section leader in the Winlock Middle School Choir. I participate in the after school play program hosted by Mrs. Schwarz in middle school.
As the 2023 Egg Days Queen, I plan to be an outspoken advocate for our local animal rescue non-profits. I am very passionate about the wellbeing of animals in our community. When I was five years old, I rescued
and tamed a feral cat. It breaks my heart that there are animals in our community without homes.
As the spokesperson for Winlock Egg Days, I look forward to making an impact on the homeless animals in our community by helping with spay and neuter clinics and participating in fundraisers for our animal shelters.
