8.2 Fire

Suitable fire fighting equipment has been made available throughout the business premises. Fully operational and certifiable fire alarm system has been installed and maintained.

Fire Extinguishing Systems

Extinguishers have been placed in accessible locations throughout the premises and for use in the event of a fire. All fire equipment is properly maintained and indicated by signage.

Fire Extinguishers are sited in direct view and mounted above the floor. As such they are placed on brackets not more than one meter from the floor.

Means of Escape

An illuminated exit sign indicates any exit. The following are the designated fire assembly points in the event of a fire:

Santry: Inside front gates of the building for office staff. Back of yard at gate to IDA park for warehouse workers.

GENERAL FIRE PRECAUTIONS

All staff members should be familiar with the following as soon as possible with:

24
Flair Showers & Sanbra Fyffe Ltd Health & Safety Statement and Risk Assessment July 2023

1. The layout of the premises

2. The location and operation of Emergency Exits

3. The location and operation of Fire Extinguishers and Break Glass units

4. The correct action to be taken on discovering a fire or if the alarm is sounded by somebody else

ALL SHOULD OBSERVE THE FOLLOWING RULES:

1. Smoking arrangements must be observed- no smoking is allowed inside the premises

2. Escape routes and access to fire extinguishers must be kept clear at all times. Emergency exits to be kept clear at all times

3. Faults in electrical, fire extinguishers, and fire alarm equipment must be reported to Management without delay

EVACUATION PROCEDURE

1. Should you discover a fire or one is reported to you, IMMEDIATELY raise the ALARM by breaking the nearest break glass unit Flair Showers & Sanbra Fyffe Ltd Health & Safety Statement and Risk Assessment July 2023

25

2. Open the nearest available exit in your area and the designated fire wardens (in orange hi-vis vests) will direct people to their exit and fire assembly point

3. Make sure that all areas are searched for stragglers. If safe to do so, close all doors and windows behind you

4. Evacuate the premises immediately and report to the fire assembly point. Do not stop to take your belongings with you

5. Once evacuated, no person should be allowed back into the building under any circumstances

6. Rescue: if any persons are discovered missing or are injured they will need assistance to bring them to safety. You should only re-enter the area under these circumstances and if you are not placing yourself in danger

7. Fire control: you should only attack the fire if you know what you are doing and if you are not placing your own life in serious danger. Fire extinguishers are provided for this purpose

8. Remain at the Fire Assembly Point until you have been accounted for. You must wait at the Fire Assembly Point until you have been given permission to leave

9. No one should drive out from the premises until they have been given permission to do so. The entrance to the premises needs to be kept clear to ensure there is sufficient space for the emergency services to enter the premises.

FIRE WARDEN DUTIES

1. Raise the alarm if it has not already been raised.

2. One of the Fire Wardens should have a designated responsibility of calling the Fire Brigade

Dial 999 or 112

Flair Showers & Sanbra Fyffe Ltd Health & Safety Statement and Risk Assessment July 2023 26

 Ask the operator for the fire brigade

 When the fire brigade answers, state clearly:

 Fire at Sanbra Fyffe / Flair Showers; Sanbra Fyffe / Flair Showers

Instantor Works

Santry Avenue

Santry Dublin 9;

 Nearest main road or landmark;

 Your phone number

 DO NOT ASSUME that the call has been received until the above information has been acknowledged by the Fire Brigade

 If safe to do so, remain near the telephone in case the Fire Brigade should ring back to confirm details

3. Fight the fire if it is safe to do so using the necessary fire equipment.

4. All main fire exits should be manned by a fire warden to usher all people out of the building as quickly as possible and direct them to the nearest assembly point. Ensure that all staff, visitors/customers are accounted for- Sanbra Fire Warden should take the visitor sign in booklet from reception if it is safe to do so.

5. Another fire warden should be positioned at the entrance to the premises to signal the entrance for the emergency services and ensure that the entrance is kept clear and no one exits without being accounted for

6. Remaining fire wardens should do a sweep of the building to ensure everyone is out of the building paying particular attention to toilet areas, canteens, warehouse aisles or any other secluded areas being cautious about your own safety- do not close the door to any of these areas behind you in case you get trapped. Prop open the door and call out to see if anyone is inside.

7. Assembly points- a fire warden should be positioned at each of the assembly points to the front and back of the building to account for everyone in the building.

8. DO NOT RE-ENTER THE PREMISES OR ANY OTHER AREAS, remain outside until otherwise advised

9.0 RISK ASSESSMET PROCESS

The Risk Assessment details the assessment of probability or likelihood of the hazard occurring using one of the five categories detailed in Table 1.

Flair Showers & Sanbra Fyffe Ltd Health & Safety Statement and Risk Assessment July 2023 32
Table 1: Likelihood Categories
Likelihood Category Definition

0 Impossible.

I Practically impossible.

II Not Likely to Occur.

III Possibility of happening sometime (Remote).

IV Possibility of Isolated incidents (Probable).

V Possibility of Isolated incidents (Frequent).

Consequence Categories

The risk identified is then given a consequence category for Safety, there are five consequence categories ranging from A to E. See Table 2 below.

Consequence Category Definition (Safety)

O No consequence.

A Minor Injury, 1st Aid, Near Miss.

B 1 day Lost Time Accident (LTA). Medical Treatment.

C Serious Injury. 3 day LTA.

D Single Fatality.

E Multiple Fatalities.

Risk Level

From the risk matrix below (Figure 1) the level of risk can easily be determined (i.e. low, medium or high) and the hazards can be risk ranked according to the risk number allocated in the matrix.

-The development of an adequate prevention policy in relation to safety, health and welfare at work, which takes account of technology, organisation of work, working conditions, social factors and the influence of factors related to the working environment;

-The giving to collective protective measures of priority over individual protective measures;

-The giving of appropriate training and instructions to employees.
