2022 Community Impact and Engagement Report

As we reflect on the last two years, it is clear the coronavirus pandemic shed light on systemic health inequities Saint Anthony Hospital has always been committed to addressing. While confronted with a global health crisis, we continued to fill crucial service gaps and show up for community members whose baseline health and access to medical care fall well below national averages. This was only possible because of our resilient team’s dedication and the tremendous generosity of our supporters.

Saint Anthony Hospital emerged as the number one hospital provider of vaccinations to Chicago’s high-risk communities due to the effectiveness of our culturally responsive community outreach program, administering over 52,000 vaccines. We also expanded our mental health services to support community members’ emotional wellbeing, and invested in our maternity and pediatric services while neighboring hospitals closed units. In FY21 alone, Saint Anthony proudly committed over $16 million in charity care, allowing us to meet the complex needs of our patients at little to no cost to them. If there were ever doubts about the role and importance of community hospitals within Chicago’s health care landscape, Saint Anthony put these to rest by proving we accomplish what traditional hospitals do not.

This report was put together with gratitude for Saint Anthony Hospital’s longtime friends and donors, whose support has changed lives and allowed us to imagine a new future for our institution. Our executive leadership would like to extend enormous thanks to all who share our belief that everyone deserves access to high quality, affordable health care regardless of one’s zip code, faith, citizenship, or ability to pay.

Together we will continue to lift barriers and remain at the frontlines of health justice in our community, inspiring and empowering our patients to expect more. Thank you for being part of our collective journey.

Sincerely,

OUR PATIENTS CAN EXPECT MORE

As a beacon of quality care for the medically underserved, Saint Anthony Hospital’s diverse staff provide patients with culturally responsive attention. Almost 80% of Saint Anthony Hospital leaders and staff are people of color, representative of the communities we serve, and about one-third of staff and leaders reside in our service area.

Representing our patients’ diversity fuels robust community engagement and a high number of patient visits, enabling Saint Anthony to impact communities plagued by decades of disinvestment and systemic racism at a disproportionately high level relative to our size.

Dr. Alfredo Mena Lora, Clinical Director of Infection Prevention,

“I love working at Saint Anthony because of the population we serve and the mission of the hospital: to provide high quality care for all. I love that SAH is embedded in the community, reflects it, and has been with the community for over 100 years. As we navigate this pandemic, I am reminded how over 100 years ago this hospital was still standing when another major pandemic spread across the world. It was responding then as it did now: with dedication and compassion.”

it’s about more than medicine

At Saint Anthony Hospital, we know caring for a patient is about so much more than addressing physical health needs. It’s about mental health, housing, education, spiritual wellbeing, and treating the whole person.

Our Community Wellness Program (CWP) addresses the full spectrum of social determinants of health by providing 100% free and bilingual mental health counseling, crisis intervention services, case management, public benefits enrollment assistance, community outreach and education, community nursing, and referrals to additional resources such as housing and employment assistance. In the last two years, Saint Anthony Hospital’s case management team made over 900 referrals for 545 unique clients.

“Growing up in La Villita I learned that there are structural and intersectional levels of oppression that create a vicious cycle of abuse, violence, and trauma in communities of color where resources are scarce. In high school, I dreamed about going to college and doing something impactful… to make a change. I knew I wanted to return to my community and be a part of something that would promote positive change and healing. I continue to be grateful to work with an organization that prioritizes the needs of our communities and advocates for change to break vicious cycles of violence and trauma.”

and Promotoras (Community Health Workers) are essential to our hospital’s community outreach efforts. Responsible for leading COVID-19 vaccine education, Educators and Promotoras are hired directly from the neighborhoods we serve to engage fellow residents in the places they live, work, play, and pray. Now employing over 30 community members, this peer-to-peer education model spreads accurate and trustworthy information about vaccines while providing meaningful workforce development opportunities to residents in our service area.

“Our Promotoras are the most caring and helpful ladies who want to see a change in the community based on their own experiences. We’ve engaged many people who initially decided they will not get vaccinated due to misconceptions they held about the vaccine. The firsthand comfort and trust our Promotoras provide has helped change many people’s minds.”

Educators Maria Gaytan, Promotoras Supervisor (pictured far right at the 2022 Mexican Independence Day Parade), shares what makes her team’s outreach so effective

Since 2018, Saint Anthony has made a concerted effort to engage Chicago’s Chinese immigrant community, who face significant challenges accessing Mandarin or Cantonese speaking Primary Care Providers and affordable, culturally competent urgent care. Through regular events in Chinatown, we have made our services known and helped vaccinate over 2,000 Chinese community members.

“As Patient Experience Manager, I have witnessed how many of our patients arrive in need of help and are able to walk away with the knowledge they need to succeed with their health. At the end of the day, my reward is seeing the impact we all have had on our customers daily. It is a pleasure to know that we are part of an organization that continues to fight for what is right in our communities.”

11
Vanessa Anzo, Saint Anthony Hospital’s Patient Experience Manager, ensures our patients receive high quality, empathetic care reflecting our values Anthony Hospital does more than provide lifesaving care. Our team recognizes a patient’s whole self when they enter our doors, ensuring all their needs are met.

“The army has something called “warrior ethos” - something I hold near and dear to my heart. I have been serving in the Illinois Army National Guard going on 14 years now, and I have always lived by this guidance. In my OCPs I am SSG Truesdell (staff sergeant) who runs a tight platoon of various soldiers and leadership. In my scrubs I am the ER Manager here at Saint Anthony who runs a cohesive unit, which I can only do because of the outstanding staff I’ve had the pleasure to work alongside. The ER team are truly a wonderful, caring group of individuals who see the good in others without judgement. They have made me humble in different aspects. Both roles reflect caring for others and putting yourself last. I am truly proud to be able to serve my country as well as this community.”

Q&A with Saint Anthony Hospital Mascot Little Tony

(“translated” by his handler)

What is your role at the hospital?

I was hired to lift the spirits of all our patients and visitors, big and small. Whether it’s to comfort a scared child in the Emergency Room, or simply to bring a smile to the faces of those that might need it most, I try to spread as much joy and happiness as I can.

I also spend time out in the community as an ambassador for the hospital. I go to a lot of back-to-school fairs and other community events, but also meet up with our Educators and Promotoras as they engage with people about our programs and services. Most recently I have been helping to promote our vaccine clinic, so it has definitely been a busy couple of years!

What inspired you to work at Saint Anthony Hospital?

I believe in Saint Anthony Hospital’s mission, and admire and share in their compassion and commitment to serving this wonderful community. It is also the only community hospital in the area with a pediatric unit, and the little patients are kind of my specialty.

What are some of your favorite things?

People, hugs, high-fives, dancing, and parades.

Any dislikes?

Chicago winters, COVID-19 of course, and seeing scared or unhappy patients. But like I said, I’m here to turn that frown upside down.

“Sammons Financial Group’s annual Big Hearts Program encourages employees to nominate a nonprofit that deeply matters to them to receive funding.

Saint Anthony Hospital has been on this program’s list for many years because of the hospital’s significant impact to communities where our employees live and work. We have been proud to donate over $90,000 since 2020 to Saint Anthony Hospital’s Pediatrics Department and newly opened Ophthalmology Clinic which provide some of the only accessible children’s and medical eye care on Chicago’s west side. These initiatives will help countless patients and families access the full breadth of preventive examinations and treatments.”

“Saint Anthony Hospital’s

leadership champions workforce development pathways to employ a wide range of people indigenous to the communities they serve, from youth to respected grandmas, and formerly incarcerated individuals. This work aligns with Michael

Trust’s mission and the value we place on community expertise in the health workforce. We are proud to be their partner.”

“Care coordination ensures that patients are linked to community services and resources that help address the social determinants of health. Care coordination in the Emergency Room also allows us to get to know members of the community overall to better understand the impact of social factors on health outcomes. My favorite part of talking with patients is the gratitude I receive from simply having checked in with them and having a meaningful conversation, something that many might not expect from visiting the emergency room.”
