2022 Community Impact and Engagement Report
As we reflect on the last two years, it is clear the coronavirus pandemic shed light on systemic health inequities Saint Anthony Hospital has always been committed to addressing. While confronted with a global health crisis, we continued to fill crucial service gaps and show up for community members whose baseline health and access to medical care fall well below national averages. This was only possible because of our resilient team’s dedication and the tremendous generosity of our supporters.
Saint Anthony Hospital emerged as the number one hospital provider of vaccinations to Chicago’s high-risk communities due to the effectiveness of our culturally responsive community outreach program, administering over 52,000 vaccines. We also expanded our mental health services to support community members’ emotional wellbeing, and invested in our maternity and pediatric services while neighboring hospitals closed units. In FY21 alone, Saint Anthony proudly committed over $16 million in charity care, allowing us to meet the complex needs of our patients at little to no cost to them. If there were ever doubts about the role and importance of community hospitals within Chicago’s health care landscape, Saint Anthony put these to rest by proving we accomplish what traditional hospitals do not.
This report was put together with gratitude for Saint Anthony Hospital’s longtime friends and donors, whose support has changed lives and allowed us to imagine a new future for our institution. Our executive leadership would like to extend enormous thanks to all who share our belief that everyone deserves access to high quality, affordable health care regardless of one’s zip code, faith, citizenship, or ability to pay.

OUR PATIENTS CAN EXPECT MORE
As a beacon of quality care for the medically underserved, Saint Anthony Hospital’s diverse staff provide patients with culturally responsive attention. Almost 80% of Saint Anthony Hospital leaders and staff are people of color, representative of the communities we serve, and about one-third of staff and leaders reside in our service area.
Representing our patients’ diversity fuels robust community engagement and a high number of patient visits, enabling Saint Anthony to impact communities plagued by decades of disinvestment and systemic racism at a disproportionately high level relative to our size.

At Saint Anthony Hospital, we know caring for a patient is about so much more than addressing physical health needs. It’s about mental health, housing, education, spiritual wellbeing, and treating the whole person.
Our Community Wellness Program (CWP) addresses the full spectrum of social determinants of health by providing 100% free and bilingual mental health counseling, crisis intervention services, case management, public benefits enrollment assistance, community outreach and education, community nursing, and referrals to additional resources such as housing and employment assistance. In the last two years, Saint Anthony Hospital’s case management team made over 900 referrals for 545 unique clients.

Saint Anthony Hospital Educators and Promotoras (Community Health Workers) are essential to our hospital’s community outreach efforts. Responsible for leading COVID-19 vaccine education, Educators and Promotoras are hired directly from the neighborhoods we serve to engage fellow residents in the places they live, work, play, and pray. Now employing over 30 community members, this peer-to-peer education model spreads accurate and trustworthy information about vaccines while providing meaningful workforce development opportunities to residents in our service area.
Since 2018, Saint Anthony has made a concerted effort to engage Chicago’s Chinese immigrant community, who face significant challenges accessing Mandarin or Cantonese speaking Primary Care Providers and affordable, culturally competent urgent care. Through regular events in Chinatown, we have made our services known and helped vaccinate over 2,000 Chinese community members.

“The army has something called “warrior ethos” - something I hold near and dear to my heart. I have been serving in the Illinois Army National Guard going on 14 years now, and I have always lived by this guidance.
In my OCPs I am SSG Truesdell (staff sergeant) who runs a tight platoon of various soldiers and leadership.
In my scrubs I am the ER Manager here at Saint Anthony who runs a cohesive unit, which I can only do because of the outstanding staff I’ve had the pleasure to work alongside. The ER team are truly a wonderful, caring group of individuals who see the good in others without judgement. They have made me humble in different aspects. Q&A with Saint Anthony Hospital Mascot
What is your role at the hospital?
I was hired to lift the spirits of all our patients and visitors, big and small. Whether it’s to comfort a scared child in the Emergency Room, or simply to bring a smile to the faces of those that might need it most, I try to spread as much joy and happiness as I can.
I also spend time out in the community as an ambassador for the hospital. I go to a lot of back-to-school fairs and other community events, but also meet up with our Educators and Promotoras as they engage with people about our programs and services. Most recently I have been helping to promote our vaccine clinic, so it has definitely been a busy couple of years!
What inspired you to work at Saint Anthony Hospital?
I believe in Saint Anthony Hospital’s mission, and admire and share in their compassion and commitment to serving this wonderful community. It is also the only community hospital in the area with a pediatric unit, and the little patients are kind of my specialty.
What are some of your favorite things?
People, hugs, high-fives, dancing, and parades.
Any dislikes?
Chicago winters, COVID-19 of course, and seeing scared or unhappy patients. But like I said, I’m here to turn that frown upside down.

The Focal Point Community Campus
As we look to the future, Saint Anthony Hospital moves closer to fulfilling our dream of building a new hospital which will serve as the anchor for a 30-acre mixed-use development campus located at the corner of 31st and Kedzie known as the Focal Point Community Campus. Saint Anthony Hospital’s current home is past its prime at over 125 years old and cannot meet growing patient needs nor address evolving health care challenges with its limited space.
