BABIES & KIDS

AT ONE WITH NATURE

“This kit is so much more than a toy set - it’s the quality you’d need to spend multiple weeks in the jungle and not get wet. Time outdoors enriches lives. My childhood was spent roaming fields, building dens and dams and as a result I feel a practical connection to nature that has never left me. If screens cause anxiety - nature is the antidote. An afternoon in the woods building a den with mates or the family is the perfect way to re-set your child and bring them back to their purest and happiest selves.” – Ed Stafford. thedenkitco.com

Let’s Get Outdoors!

The Den Kit Company are passionate advocates of outdoor play and aim to inspire families to get into the great outdoors wherever possible.

The brand’s award winning Den Kits are available in a variety of themes and designed to encourage children outside - whether a tiny backyard, the woods, beach or balcony. The promise of a hand-crafted space in which to set up a temporary retreat is tempting to children (and adults) of all ages, and with little or no previous den-building experience.

All of the kits are lovingly made in the UK and all free of single-use-plastic, batteries or complicated instructions.

If the range of Den Kits weren’t enticing enough, the clever team have also developed an ingenious collection of creative Activity Kits- these include their Make A Pizza For The Birds Kit and Potion Making Kit.

Of course, whilst the kits appeal to children’s natural sense of adventure, they are also an effective teaching tool. Unencumbered by adult intervention, children are free to explore their own creative talents for problem solving, critical thinking and ingenuity. thedenkitco.com

Tiny Feet, Big Dreams.

How early on in pregnancy do foetuses develop these senses?

A foetus’ sense of flavour begins to develop quite early in pregnancy.

“We knew that when we recorded them at 32 and 36 weeks by then the ability to sense flavour had definitely been established, because it’s in the first trimester that the taste buds start to develop and function, around 12-14 weeks,” says Reissland. “This is much earlier than we exposed the foetuses to in our study because we wanted to make sure they would be developed enough to savour it.”

Foetuses are also very sensitive to smell very early on.

“Smell happens very early, and foetuses have a more developed smell sense than adults normally have,” says Reissland. “They can detect subtle differences in smell much more so than adults normally can.”

What type of diet is recommended for pregnant mothers?

“What the mother eats definitely has an impact on how the foetus develops. So, mothers should eat a healthy and varied diet,” advises Reissland. “One way of potentially getting babies to like greens is to give mothers some capsules of that, and it might have an effect on how after birth, babies react to it.

“We only tested on tiny babies so a follow up study would be important with older children.”

Laura Southern, nutritional therapist at London Gynaecology agrees that a balanced varied diet is key, and suggests eating more protein-rich foods.

“Protein-rich foods support blood sugar balance

and also essential building blocks for the growing baby,” explains Southern. “Protein is essential in pregnancy because it’s used for growth and building.

“Pregnant women need to ensure they’re including protein at each meal – nuts, seeds, legumes, eggs, meat, fish, dairy and soya.”

How do other factors impact food preferences post-birth?

“There are so many influences, including the food culture, like whether they eat together as a family, for example,” says Reissland. “Also, whether the parents themselves have food-related problems plays a role and also how stressed and depressed the mother is.

“If the mother is in a completely stressed state and has to feed the child and the child doesn’t want to eat, it will be very difficult to get that food into the child’s mouth – which might lead to maternal increased stress during meal times and potentially leading to fussy eating.”

How can parents help broaden their baby’s palate?

“By giving them a wide variety of flavours after birth (e.g. through breastmilk when the mother herself eats a varied diet), but what we also found was that starting prenatally might help,” says Reissland. “Additionally, foetuses are learning about the food culture through their mother’s diet, so they are prepared for it after birth.

“This something we did not study, but we would like to look at in a future study.”

“Smell happens very early, and foetuses have a more developed smell sense than adults normally have,” says Reissland. “They can detect subtle differences in smell much more so than adults normally can”

PROTECTING YOUNG SKIN: Preventing Skin Cancer in Children and Adults

While skin cancer is more commonly diagnosed in adults, there has been a 150% increase in the diagnosis of childhood skin cancers over the past few decades. Additionally, the habits we establish in childhood, play a crucial role in determining future risk. Studies show that a significant amount of lifetime sun exposure occurs before the age of 18, and even a few severe sunburns in childhood can double the risk of developing melanoma later in life.

Children’s skin is thinner and more sensitive than that of adults, making it more susceptible to UV damage. The two main types of ultraviolet radiation—UVA and UVB—penetrate the skin differently but both contribute to DNA damage, premature ageing, and increased cancer risk over time.

The cancer in young babies and children normally arises from congenital moles, whilst in adolescents there is more of an ‘adult type’ melanoma. Some skin cancers are genetically linked.

At The London General Practice, we strongly advocate for early education and preventative strategies to protect young, vulnerable skin.

KEY PREVENTION STRATEGIES

Sun Protection: it is important to know how to read a label of a sunscreen. A broad-spectrum sunscreen means that it should protect from both UVA and UVB harmful rays. SPF (Sun Protection Factor) indicates how long can a person stay in the sun before it starts to burn the skin. The SPF should be 30 or higher), and should be applied at

least 20 minutes before sun exposure. The term ‘waterproof’ and ‘sweat resistant’ are misleading as none on the sun screens can fully provide that protection, therefore a frequent reapplication is recommended.

Protective Clothing: Encourage children to wear wide-brimmed hats, UV-protective clothing, and sunglasses when outdoors, especially during

peak sun hours (11 am–3 pm).

Seek Shade: Make shade a priority, especially for infants and toddlers. Use umbrellas, trees, or pram covers to shield delicate skin from direct sunlight.

Lead by Example: Children are more likely to adopt sun-safe behaviours if they see adults doing the same. Practice what you preach—apply sunscreen together and wear protective clothing as a family.

At The London General Practice, skin checks are an important part of our comprehensive health screenings. We routinely assess skin health, including mole mapping and identifying any concerning lesions, as part of our proactive

approach to early detection. Parents are encouraged to monitor their child’s skin for any changes, and our team is here to provide expert evaluation and guidance when needed. Early awareness and intervention can make all the difference.

Protecting your child’s skin today helps safeguard their future. Good sun safety habits, developed early, lay the foundation for a lifetime of healthy skin.

WHY WE LOVE GOOGLE REVIEWS

At Effect Doctors, we place immense value on patient feedback. Every review we receive is more than just a rating; it’s a vital insight into our services. That’s why we encourage every patient to share their experience on Google, and each review is personally read and responded to by one of our directors. This hands-on approach ensures we remain connected to our patients’ needs and continuously refine our services.

Over the past six months, we’ve been delighted to receive over 150 new Google reviews. Remarkably, 92% of these have been 5-star ratings, reflecting our team’s dedication to delivering exceptional care. These reviews aren’t just numbers; they provide a narrative of our patients’ journeys and highlight areas where we excel and where we can improve. A recurring theme in the feedback is the professionalism and compassion of our staff. Patients frequently mention specific team members. One patient shared, “Hilary was amazing—she came up to 3 times a day, organised everything... was very caring and great to chat to.” Such testimonials underscore the personal connections our team fosters with each patient.

Importantly, many patients report tangible health improvements following their treatments. From increased energy levels to reduced reliance on medication, these outcomes are a testament to the efficacy of our services. One patient shared, “I felt much much better within 1-2hrs,” highlighting the immediate benefits some experience.

Efficiency and responsiveness are also commonly highlighted. Many patients appreciate our ability to accommodate last-minute appointments and provide timely results. One review noted, “Super quick, no fuss service. The doctor carefully explained the meaning of the results and gave great recommendations.” This feedback reinforces our commitment to being accessible and responsive to our patients’ needs.

The quality of our treatments and facilities doesn’t go unnoticed either. Patients commend the cleanliness and comfort of our clinic, as well as the effectiveness of treatments like IV drips and blood tests. One reviewer mentioned, “The clinic itself was clean, well-organised, and had a cozy vibe,” while another stated, “I’ve tried other clinics before, but this one really exceeded my expectations.”

Our flexible service model, offering treatments at home or in hotels, is another aspect patients value. The convenience of receiving care in a comfortable setting is frequently mentioned. A satisfied patient noted, “We had full blood tests and IV drips in the comfort of our home, watching a family movie, and having lunch by the fire.”

What we do is important to get right; intravenous drips, aesthetic treatments, weight loss medication and our support for other Doctors patients in delivering IV drugs at home. All of these require a high level of medical expertise and we are always looking for ways to deliver it in kinder and more effective ways.

We view each review as an opportunity to learn and grow. Feedback informs our training programs, service offerings, and operational procedures. By actively listening to our patients, we ensure that our services evolve to meet their changing needs.
