Separation can arrive with little warning or after years of trying to make things work, but once the decision is made, questions about homes, savings and pensions quickly follow. What happens to the nest egg you’ve built, the equity in the family home or a business one of you has grown?
Clear, early guidance can make the road ahead feel far less daunting. B P Collins’ family team advises people at every stage, from those quietly exploring their options to couples ready to formalise a settlement, offering pragmatic advice, calm negotiation and robust representation where needed. They regularly handle cases involving complex assets

(including pensions, businesses and trusts), and can support you through mediation or court proceedings, always with a focus on achieving fair outcomes for you and any children. Many people facing the end of a marriage understandably want to know what they may be entitled to. B P Collins’ family team provides the answers.
The starting point: 50/50 split
The courts will initially look to split equally all assets built up during the marriage, such as the family home, bank accounts, and investments including pensions. However, the courts will then cross check whether this would meet the needs of each spouse and their children. Ultimately meeting needs often leads to an unequal split of the assets.
Matrimonial vs. non-matrimonial assets
Matrimonial assets are those generated during the marriage, regardless of who generated them, or took on other tasks such as caring for children. Non-matrimonial assets (e.g. inheritance, pre-marital property, or gifts) are usually excluded. However, if they have been mingled with family finances, such as buying the family home, they may be ‘matrimonialised’ and therefore shareable. Non-matrimonial assets can also be applied to meet the needs of the parties if there are not enough matrimonial assets.
Factors considered
The court does not take into account who caused the breakdown of the marriage. They focus instead on more practical matters including:
• Your children’s needs: their housing (albeit downsizing in most cases) and financial stability
• Each spouse’s income and earning capacity: including earning potential
• Financial resources: such as trusts that one party is a beneficiary of.
• Duration of the marriage
• Standard of living during the marriage
• Physical or mental disabilities
Pensions
Pensions are often overlooked, but can be the most valuable asset. Pensions can be shared to create a new pension for the receiving spouse, or offset against other assets. The court will divide them based on need, and can include pre-marital pensions.
If you’re financially dependent on your spouse, a family solicitor can help negotiate appropriate interim financial arrangements. If your spouse refuses to make adequate
provision, you can apply to the court for an interim financial order, requiring your spouse to pay until a final settlement is reached.
While it can feel overwhelming, being organised helps. Gathering financial information about all the assets will help your solicitor give you more accurate advice and aid discussions with your spouse. Dividing assets is rarely straightforward and outcomes depend heavily on your personal circumstances. If you are going through, or considering divorce, speaking to a specialist family solicitor at an early stage can help you prepare the best way forward, and help you to feel more in control.

B P Collins’ family team combines technical expertise with a practical, empathetic approach, helping clients prioritise children’s needs, understand the treatment of pensions and non-matrimonial property and negotiate sustainable agreements. Whether you prefer mediation or require representation in court, the team will guide you step by step, explain your options in plain English and keep you focused on achieving a stable future.
When you’re ready to talk through your situation in confidence, please contact us for an initial discussion to map the best path forward for you and your family by emailing enquiries@bpcollins.co.uk or calling 01753 889995.

For us, food was always a way of bringing people together.” While Italian cuisine remains his first love, Enrico’s career has taken him far beyond pasta and risotto. Years spent in busy kitchens introduced him to a rich tapestry of global flavours. “I worked with incredible chefs from China, Japan and Lebanon, it gave me a real respect for different traditions, and today I like to bring some of that influence into my cooking.” That balance of authenticity and experimentation now defines his work at The Artemis – the excellent restaurant at The Denton in Berkhamsted. “We keep the classics but we also play around with weekly specials – Indian dishes one week, seafood the next. The idea is to surprise and delight, so dining never feels repetitive.”

One dish particularly close to his heart is his tagliatelle Bolognese.
“I make it just as my mother did, simmered for four hours, no shortcuts. I want our guests to taste true Italy.”

Over his career, Enrico’s skills have brought him the chance to cook for celebrities including Kate Moss, Anthony Joshua and Drake. But for him, fame will never be the true reward. He explains: “As a chef, the greatest reward isn’t a famous name, it’s when someone tastes your food and says, ‘Thank you, this was fantastic.’ That moment makes all the hard work worth it.”

As we turn the corner into December and the start of Advent, the festive season draws near — a time for gathering, to share time with friends, family and loved ones and part of that occasion generally revolves around food! Since time will be precious, this month’s recipe can be made in advance and will form the perfect snack
with pre-Christmas drinks or something to visit after the big days lunch.
At the restaurant we have reinvented the classic sausage roll to use venison, a lean nutritious meat with a wintery game flavour, adding a hint of spice and thyme for the festive season. Delicious served warm with a tangy cranberry relish or a vibrant winter chutney.

Ingredients
Serves approx 8
• 500g minced venison
• 350 g pork sausage meat (you could simply squeeze out the equivalent from a good quality pork sausage)
• Zest and juice of 2 oranges
• 1/3 tsp finely chopped juniper berries
• 1 tblsp chopped thyme
Method
1. Sweat the garlic, shallot and the chopped thyme in a pan with a little oil till soft, leave to cool
2. Then combine all the ingredients with 1 beaten egg
3. Roll out the puff pastry and form a sausage down the centre of your pastry, brush along 1 side with beaten egg and fold the pastry over encasing the meat, seal the edge with the back of a fork then lightly score the top in 8 cm sections
4. Place on baking parchment and put on a flat baking sheet. Egg wash the sausage roll & sprinkle a little Malden salt along its length
5. Cook in a pre-heated oven 180c for 30 -35 minutes until golden brown
6. When slightly cooled slice into 8 cm tranches for sharing with your guests. Some enjoy their sausage rolls cold I prefer mine warm with a spoonful of a spiced Winter chutney, delicious either way!
• 1tsp Malden salt
• 2tsp olive oil
• 1/3 tsp ground black pepper
• A couple of grating of nutmeg
• 1 pinch cinnamon
• 2 large shallots finely diced
• 1 clove garlic finely chopped
• 2 beaten whole egg
• 500g good quality ready-made puff pastry

If all ingredients are fresh once assembled the sausage roll can be frozen till required. To mix things up try adding some cranberry sauce to your mix and experiment with chopped rosemary or sage instead of the thyme, added to the onions whilst sweating down.

Crazy Bear in Beaconsfield Old Town has long been unapologetically decadent, but with the arrival of BEAR by Carlo Scotto, indulgence takes on a deeper meaning — quite literally. Hidden beneath the hotel’s opulent exterior lies an intimate, 14-seat chef’s table offering an eightcourse dining experience that celebrates Britain’s wild bounty in extraordinary style.
Guests begin their journey in BEAR’s warm, wood-panelled lounge, where sunlight shimmers across the outdoor pool, before descending into a dramatic subterranean dining room. Dressed in iridescent blues and golds, the space glows with geometric Philip Jeffries wallpaper, aged brass sconces, and amber glass pendants. At its centre, a striking horseshoe counter of Nero Portoro black marble invites diners to gather around and watch Chef Carlo and his team at work — a rare, unfiltered connection between kitchen and guest.
Rooted firmly in Britain’s natural larder, Scotto’s cooking redefines the farm-to-fork ethos. Around half of the ingredients are foraged daily from the

Chiltern Hills and nearby woodlands — from lung oyster mushrooms and burdock root to wild garlic and blackthorn berries. Each day’s menu is shaped by nature’s spontaneity, ensuring no two experiences are ever the same.
Our tasting journey begins with delicate canapés such as langoustine with kohlrabi, oyster leaf and shiso, before unfolding through creations like Ike Jime Chalk Stream Trout with wild sea beets and Ardbeg, Agnolotti filled with rolet gem squash and black garlic, and Miso-Glazed Duck with blue moon radish and Umeshu jus. Desserts celebrate the landscape too — from Quince Tart with Beaconsfield honey and truffle to Apple with marigold and bergamot granite.
Pairings are instinctive and ever-evolving, featuring rare wines, artisanal meads, vintage sakes, and refined non-alcoholic infusions.
Constantly attuned to the seasons, BEAR by Carlo Scotto offers more than a meal — it’s an immersive encounter with Britain’s untamed chef, one exquisite plate at a time.
The experience is nothing less than spectacular! It wouldn’t surprise me if BEAR by Carlo Scotto received sparkling praise by a certain French tyre manufacturer in the not to distant future.

Q&A
We’ve all been there. Ten-tabs deep in-flight options, hotel reviews, and “must-see” lists. Why does organising time away so often feel like a job in itself? We sat down with Carsten Lund, founder of TRIPLA, to hear why he believes travel should feel effortless, and how his own experiences have inspired a different approach.
Q. Carsten, you’ve spent a lifetime travelling. What stands out most from those experiences?
I’ve been lucky to see the world through both a luxury and practical lens—from barefoot privateisland escapes to cultural weekends in Europe and ultra-luxury cruises. What always stands out is how much detail matters. The transfer that’s waiting without fuss, or the restaurant that genuinely delivers. It’s those small touches that turn a good trip into a truly memorable one.

“To me, true luxury is when everything flows. It doesn’t always mean extravagant, but it does mean thoughtful.”
Q. When we were chatting before this interview, you said luxury is about “ease.” What does that mean to you?
Q. Many of us know the stress of planning holidays. What do you think makes it so challenging?
Time, mostly. Travel should be restorative, but organising it often isn’t. One multigenerational family wanted a milestone birthday in Tuscany for but felt overwhelmed by villa and travel choices. We found a home that suited everyone, arranged a night with a private chef and a wine tasting. What began as a logistical headache became a celebration and holiday they’ll never forget.

To me, true luxury is when everything flows. It doesn’t always mean extravagant, but it does mean thoughtful. A wellness retreat where transfers, spa treatments and mountain hikes are coordinated seamlessly. Or a short city break where flights, hotel and dinner reservations are taken care of. It’s not about the price tag—it’s about removing stress and creating something personal. Travel has become less about ticking off destinations and more about creating moments that stay with you.
Q. And finally, what do you hope clients feel when they travel with TRIPLA?
Peace of mind, really. Travel has become less about ticking off destinations and more about creating moments that stay with you. That feeling of being looked after so they can just enjoy the experience. Whether it’s a river cruise with private excursions, a birthday in Tuscany, or a quick Parisian escape between board meetings, I want them to feel it was designed just for them. And that they never had to worry about the details.

However, the rules around pension savings and Inheritance Tax (IHT) are set to change from April 2027.
Pensions were previously exempt from IHT. So, they’ve been treated as a flexible, tax-efficient way to pass on wealth. Individuals have then drawn their retirement income from cash, ISAs, and investments first, preserving their pensions for their loved ones to inherit.

But, with pensions set to be brought into the IHT net from April 2027, this strategy may no longer be the most effective for you. Instead, the suitable approach will depend on your goals, family circumstances, and how your wealth is currently organised.
So, what can you do now? While the right course of action will be individual to you, it’s sensible to start by reviewing the basics.
For example, you might want to:

• Review your beneficiary nominations and expression of wishes so the right people inherit as you intend
• Revisit how you draw your retirement income from pensions, ISAs and other investments to manage Income Tax today and potential IHT later
• Make gifts under tax-free allowances and exemptions, such as the annual gifting exemption and, if suitable, regular gifts from surplus income, while protecting your own long -term security
• Consider life insurance written in trust to help your beneficiaries settle a future tax bill, easing pressure on your executors and family.
The sooner you start planning, the better. That way, you’ll give yourself enough time to align your retirement withdrawals, gifting, and investment strategy with your legacy aims. Crucially, you’ll want to review regularly as your life and the rules change, keeping your plan flexible in case of further developments that affect you.
Effective planning can reduce the risk of an unintended tax bill, while giving you confidence to enjoy your retirement. If you would like to explore what the proposed 2027 changes could mean for you, Agility Financial can help you build a clear, tailored plan.

Buckinghamshire Building Society’s Community Fund offers their colleagues a chance to give back to the community the Society has proudly served for 100 years.
Designed and led entirely by colleagues, the grant supports issues close to their hearts. For 2025, the focus was on supporting adults experiencing loneliness and isolation during life transitions. The theme, “Unseen and In Between: Supporting Adults Through Change and Connection,” sought projects that help individuals reconnect, rebuild purpose, and foster meaningful social connections.
After careful deliberation and a colleague-wide vote, the Society is delighted to announce Black Park Shed as the recipient of this year’s £5,000 grant.
Black Park Shed offers a welcoming community workshop where people meet, share skills, and build friendships through creative, hands-on projects. This environment supports adults facing isolation, bereavement, or major life changes by helping them regain confidence and purpose through shared activity and conversation.
On 4 December Chairman Tommy Musgrave and Charity Secretary

Les Stone visited the Chalfont St Giles office where the Society’s CEO Dan Wass presented the grant. Colleagues also had the chance to learn more about the organisation.
“We are very grateful to receive this grant. It will help us provide over 60 members with ongoing access to our facilities and support older men and women through loneliness, bereavement, and ill health. This funding will make them visible and active participants in projects that benefit both themselves and the wider community.”
— Tommy Musgrave, Chairman, Black Park Shed
The Society also extends thanks to Heart of Bucks for their invaluable support in facilitating the fund.
“We are delighted to work with Buckinghamshire Building Society to identify a local organisation aligned with their charitable goals. These additional funds will be put to great use by Black Park Shed.”
— Henry Allmand, CEO, Heart of Bucks
Congratulations to Black Park Shed. The Community Fund will return next year with refreshed criteria.

or many, remarriage represents hope, renewal, and the possibility of building a more fulfilling partnership. Yet alongside the excitement, there are both legal and emotional complexities that should not be overlooked. As family lawyers, we regularly see how informed preparation can make the difference between a smooth transition and unforeseen challenges.
Before saying “I do” again, it’s vital to understand how remarriage interacts with existing legal obligations. Financial support agreements, property division, and child arrangements from a prior divorce may continue to have an effect. For example, remarriage can alter maintenance payments, or raise questions about inheritance rights. Reviewing wills, trusts, and beneficiary designations is equally important—what once made sense in a first marriage may no longer reflect current wishes. A careful legal review helps ensure that your new relationship begins on solid ground.

Divorce settlements often cast a long shadow over second marriages. Financial obligations toward a former spouse or children can influence the new household’s financial health. Likewise, decisions around shared assets or pensions may affect what each partner can contribute. Far from being a barrier, clear understanding of these obligations can prevent future disputes and allow couples to plan realistically together.
Many couples entering a second marriage also consider a prenuptial agreement which can strengthen trust by clarifying financial expectations from the outset. It can safeguard children from a first marriage, protect family assets, and provide reassurance that both partners’ contributions are respected. Approached openly and fairly, it can be a practical tool for building security in a new partnership.

Remarriage should be a time of optimism, not uncertainty. As family lawyers, we are here to guide you through the legal framework that accompanies remarriage—helping you move forward with clarity and peace of mind.
We offer a free initial consultation to help you understand your legal position and explore the best path forward.

As John Lyon School, located in Harrow-on-the-Hill, marks its landmark 150th anniversary, the community finds itself at a rare and meaningful intersection: honouring a storied past while shaping an ambitious future. For a school founded on tradition yet driven by innovation, this year is not simply a celebration of longevity; it is a reaffirmation of purpose.

“Our 150th year is a moment to celebrate the generations of pupils, teachers and families who have shaped the school’s identity,” reflects the Head, Rose Hardy. But at John Lyon, heritage is not treated as a static artefact. Rather, it is the foundation upon which bold, future-focused decisions are made. Alongside commemorative events, the school is investing in academic innovation, pastoral development, and new facilities designed to strengthen the next century of its story. “Heritage grounds us; innovation provides direction,” she says. “A truly great school must hold both.”
This philosophy underpins much of the school’s evolution. In an educational sector where independent schools continually balance tradition with modernity, John Lyon has carved a distinctive path. Classical academic rigour sits comfortably alongside contemporary relevance: digital literacy, global citizenship, and the kind of critical thinking skills needed for a world increasingly shaped by complexity. The campus itself mirrors this duality: historic buildings, rich with memory, set beside modern learning spaces that reflect the needs of pupils preparing for a fast-changing world. It is, in essence, a traditional academic education delivered with a modern, worldly lens.
One of the most transformative shifts in recent years was the move to full co-education in 2021, a change that has reshaped not only the pupil experience but the school’s entire culture. “Coeducation has brought an energy and presence that
enriches classroom discussion, collaboration and pupil leadership,” says the Head. The move has ensured that boys and girls learn side by side with mutual respect, challenge and inspiration. Families have responded with enthusiasm, and the school’s dynamic, inclusive culture now mirrors the diverse, collaborative world pupils will enter beyond graduation. “Proudly, our school now reflects the realities of our world – where both genders are present and empowered.” Girls are now present in every year group and the school has embraced the opportunity to innovate its physical spaces to incorporate private study areas for female pupils, and growing girl’s sport at pace, while enhancing the co-curricular offering with over 120 activities available to all pupils, from Prep to Sixth Form.
Appointed Head in 2023, Mrs Hardy arrived at a time of renewal, poised between the school’s storied heritage and its next chapter. An Oxford graduate and passionate historian, she brings formidable academic credentials to the role, matched by a modern, humane approach to leadership. From the outset, her vision has been one of clarity and uplift: to sharpen academic ambition, strengthen pastoral care, and instil confidence in every pupil and member of staff. Elevating pupil voice and empowering teachers to innovate with purpose have become hallmarks of her tenure.
“My vision continues to evolve as we strengthen our through-school identity and expand opportunities for every pupil,” she reflects. “Today, we stand on the threshold of a new era, deeply proud of our heritage

and excited for what comes next.”
Her academic background informs her educational philosophy: a curriculum grounded in traditional scholarly values and rigorous practice, paired with an outward-looking ambition to shape global citizens and tomorrow’s leaders.
This through-school identity, offering a continuous journey from age 2 to 18, is a defining strength of John Lyon. Few dual-campus schools offer such seamless progression across the full arc of childhood and adolescence. The advantages are considerable: consistent values, shared expectations, and teaching approaches that grow with the children. Transitions cease to be points of disruption; instead, pupils gain confidence, surrounded by adults who know them deeply. Teachers can craft personalised academic stretch while providing the pastoral stability children need to thrive. The result is a generation of young adults who feel grounded, supported and seen.
These pastoral foundations are matched by renewed academic ambition. Last year’s A Level cohort achieved the school’s best results since 2017, a reflection of a culture of high expectations, early intervention, and powerful partnerships between pupils and teachers. Academic enrichment programmes have expanded, data-informed strategies identify needs early, and classrooms are characterised by stretch, intellectual curiosity and pride in achievement. Ultimately, though, the Head attributes success to the pupils themselves: “They work incredibly hard and take immense pride in what they accomplish.”
In a competitive educational landscape, John Lyon distinguishes itself through a blend of historic grounding and modern ambition. Its through-school structure, strong pastoral and emotional literacy focus, and expertise of committed subject specialists create an
environment where children are known, valued and challenged. Parents increasingly seek schools that offer both academic stretch and compassionate support, two priorities John Lyon refuses to treat as mutually exclusive. Wellbeing, the school firmly believes, supports achievement, not the other way around. A team of in-school counsellors, a private wellbeing suite and a professional-standard medical room ensure pupils receive proactive, personalised pastoral care throughout their school life.
As the school looks to its next 150 years, the Head is energised by upcoming innovations. Crosscampus academic initiatives will further strengthen the 2–18 journey. Partnerships with universities, local organisations and global learning platforms will broaden horizons. Digital learning continues to evolve, and opportunities in outdoor education, sport and the creative arts are expanding to support the whole child.
But ultimately, the true legacy of John Lyon will be seen not in buildings or programmes but in the young people who depart their growing Sixth Form each year. The school strives to nurture individuals who are intellectually curious, emotionally intelligent and socially responsible, confident communicators, critical thinkers and kind human beings. “Above all,” the Head concludes, “we want pupils who know who they are, and who feel truly ready for life after John Lyon.”
In its 150th year, John Lyon stands as a school rooted in tradition and flourishing in modernity, a place where history inspires ambition and where the next century is already taking shape.

As we approach the new term, it is now when thoughts turn to Independent School Open Days - allowing you to get a genuine feel for the school and whether on first impressions it is right for your child.
•Check on the school website if you need to make an appointment prior to visiting
•It is vital that you are prepared so read their school brochures thoroughly
•Take your child with you – their opinion is the most important. Children will get an idea whether they feel comfortable there.
•Talk to as many people as you can: pupils, teachers and the headmaster ideally
•Take an independent walk around with your child and chat about any reservations you might both have.
Some questions will differ according to your child’s age and whether you are visiting a day or boarding school.
•How selective is the school academically and what is the current pass rate for the common entrance exam?
•Are there high expectations and high academic achievements?
•Is the curriculum broad and well balanced? (you want your child to be successful but not too

“Take your child with you – their opinion is the most important”
compelled in pressure)
•What are the classroom sizes?
•What is expected of my child with regard to homework?
•Is there a healthy balance of fun and academia?
•Is there a bullying policy?
•What lunchtime meals are available?
•What sports and music facilities are available?
•What after school clubs and trips are available?
•How many pupils branch out into further education?
After the tour, you may have the opportunity to meet other parents and children on a more informal footing whereby the teachers and the head can answer queries over coffee and biscuits.

There are some schools you can describe, and others you simply have to experience. Clayesmore falls firmly into the latter. Tucked into the rolling Dorset countryside, there is an undeniable sense of something special here. A warmth, an energy, a quiet magic that greets you the moment you arrive. It is not the beautiful buildings or the impressive facilities that define Clayesmore, but the way each child is embraced, understood and empowered to flourish.
Clayesmore is a truly inclusive community where everyone belongs. It is a school that celebrates difference, recognising that every child brings their own stories, strengths and potential. Here, no one is expected to fit a mould. Instead, pupils find their place, their people and their confidence, supported by teachers who know them not just by name, but by nature. This deep sense of belonging creates a foundation from which students begin to believe in themselves, and from this belief comes achievement.
Success at Clayesmore is not measured solely by outcomes, but by growth, confidence and character. Every student is encouraged to exceed their own expectations, discovering abilities they may not have realised they had. Whether in the classroom, on the sports field, in the art studio or on stage, each child is supported to explore their interests and embrace new challenges with curiosity and courage.

A holistic approach to education sits at the very heart of Clayesmore life. Academic learning is thoughtfully balanced with creativity, sport, outdoor pursuits and enrichment, ensuring students develop not only intellect, but emotional intelligence, resilience and independence too. From the nurturing foundations of the Prep School through to the empowering environment of the Senior School and Sixth Form, every stage of the journey is carefully guided and deeply personal.
Perhaps what makes Clayesmore most special is its kind, family feel. It is a community where children feel safe to be themselves, where they are listened to, valued and encouraged to aim high. In this supportive environment, pupils grow into confident, compassionate and grounded young people ready to step forward into the world. Clayesmore is more than a school. It is a place where magic quietly happens every day. A place - where children find their strengths, their voices and their future. A place where they belong, believe and truly become.

All Through School
The study, by the Sutton Trust education charity, shows that virtually every key profession is dominated by privately educated pupils grabbing the senior management/director positions

Their grip on power is most noticeable in the judiciary, where 74 per cent of leading judges (those in the High Court or Court of Appeal) were privately educated.
Figures in the report also show that one in three MPs (32 per cent) was privately educated –as were half the members of the Conservative Cabinet. Even in Jeremy Corbyn’s Shadow Cabinet, 13 per cent of members went to private school. Nationally, the figure is just 7 per cent.
The report, carried out by Dr Philip Kirby, goes on to show that 71 per cent of senior Army officers – two-star generals and above – went to private schools. Only 12 per cent attended comprehensives.
“The
higher echelons of journalism are also dominated by the private sector, with 51 per cent educated in independent schools”
In medicine, 61 per cent of doctors were privately educated while 22 per cent went to selective state grammar schools and just 16 per cent to comprehensives. The list goes on – 48 per cent of civil servants were educated privately, 29 per cent went to selective grammar schools and 23 per cent to comprehensives.
The higher echelons of journalism are also dominated by the private sector, with 51 per cent educated in independent schools. And of those chief executives of FTSE 100 companies who were educated in the UK, 34 per cent were privately educated.
Nearly half the top actors – 42 per cent of Bafta Award winners – went to private schools, fuelling criticism that the profession is becoming more elitist.
“Our research shows that your chances of reaching the top in so many areas of British life are so much better if you went to an independent school,” said Sir Peter Lampl, the chairman of the Sutton Trust. “As well as academic achievement, an independent education tends to develop the essential skills such as confidence, articulacy and teamwork, which are vital to career success.

Top tips for blemish-free legs with leading consultant vascular surgeon
Michael Gaunt
Few of us have blemish-free, perfect party legs. A familiar problem is thread veins or “spider” veins. Hard to disguise thread veins are common around the ankles, knees, and thighs and may also appear on the face. They initially emerge as one or two tiny red or purple lines, but quickly develop a web-like pattern, that enlarges across the skin, deepening in colour. Thread veins may cause symptoms of discomfort, itching and irritation.
Unsightly but treatable
Thread veins develop and increase over time as localised patches. Early treatment is advisable to gain healthy looking, blemish-free skin.
“Spider veins can be the first signs of an underlying varicose vein problem”
Thread veins on legs and ankles may be the first visible indication that there is a vascular problem. I always assess patients using a Duplex Ultrasound Scan to identify underlying varicose veins and provide a bespoke treatment plan. If varicose veins are left untreated, thread veins will be less responsive to treatment and will recur.
What treatments are available?
I specialise in minimally-invasive varicose veins surgery: Endovenous Laser and ClariVein techniques. For many patients, these procedures can be performed under local anaesthetic as walkin, walk-out treatments.

An Outpatient treatment for less extensive varicose veins is Ultrasound-Guided Foam Sclerotherapy (UGFS). Saline injection sclerotherapy treats thread veins on the legs effectively and VeinWave is my preferred option for facial veins.
“When you notice the first development of thread veins, it’s worth seeking treatment before the problem becomes widespread” No two people’s varicose veins are the same and the right procedure for one person may not be successful for someone else. Correcting the underlying problem will ensure long term results.

We advise brushing with a fluoride containing toothpaste, first thing in the morning to remove plaque and bacteria that have accumulated over night and to brush last thing at night because saliva (which helps to keep the cavitycausing plaque off teeth) dries up as we sleep. Ensure you clean all faces of the teeth to avoid missing any areas and don’t forget your gums.
Use dental floss or interdental brushes to clean in-between the teeth where plaque collects. Do this before you brush to remove any plaque from these areas. Roughly 90% of problems arise from areas between the teeth so it is important to clean these areas effectively.
We always recommend electric toothbrushes for their superior performance when compared to manual brushing. Electric toothbrushes tend to have small brush heads that cup around the tooth and are faster and more efficient in cleaning areas of the mouth where bacteria and plaque collect.

Top tips to help you care for your smile all year round
• Brush your teeth last thing at night and at least one other time during the day with a fluoride toothpaste.
• Clean in between your teeth at least once a day using interdental brushes or floss.
And remember to change your toothbrush head every two to three months as bacteria will collect on the bristles and you will transfer them back into your mouth. Moreover, the bristles will become soft and ineffective. If your toothbrush heads are wearing out before two months then you are probably brushing too harshly. As part of our hygiene services, we run through your technique to ensure you are brushing the correct way!
Saliva provides an essential defence against tooth decay and periodontal disease. Where there is insufficient saliva serious dental health problems can arise. The most common cause is not drinking enough water. Persistent dry mouth could be a

• To check if you have bad breath lick your wrist, let it dry and give it a sniff, if it smells your breath probably does too.
• If you use mouthwash don’t use it directly after brushing as you rinse away the fluoride
symptom of a disease or a side effect of certain medicines and we can guide you on managing this.
The most common cause of this is poor oral care. Volatile Sulphur Compounds (VSC) are produced when naturally occurring bacteria break down plaque and food debris in the mouth. By keeping plaque and debris in check, bacteria have less to feed on and reproduce less frequently.
A major cause of bad breath can actually come from bacteria building up on your tongue with a high percentage of it accumulating at the
back, making it hard to reach. We recommend a proper tongue cleaner every morning to remove tongue plaque and freshen your breath- it is more effective than brushing your tongue with a toothbrush.
If you are looking for a good mouthwash, then make sure it is alcohol-free, as alcohol is an irritant and can dry out the mouth. This will have the effect of reducing the amount of saliva present, and make your teeth more susceptible to bacteria. Use one containing fluoride, as the benefits of a mouthwash are that they can reach areas not touched by brushing alone.

– Keep it local for everything house and home –

In the world of refined home design, true luxury is rarely loud. It reveals itself quietly — through craftsmanship, integrity, and the confidence that comes from choosing specialists who understand how to elevate a home’s character. For nearly four decades, Ruislip Windows & Doors has represented exactly that kind of understated excellence. Established in 1986 and shaped by the unwavering values of a family-run business, the company has grown into one of the most trusted names in Hertfordshire, Middlesex, and the surrounding counties.
Their story began with general building work, but by the mid-1990s, a clear vision emerged: to dedicate themselves to the transformative potential of windows, doors, and conservatories. The name Ruislip Windows & Doors Ltd has since become synonymous with reliability, expert guidance, and high-quality installations designed to last. What sets them apart is not just what they install, but how they work — with no pressureselling, no rushed decisions, and no gimmicks. Instead, clients encounter honest advice, detailed expertise, and a team that genuinely wants to help homeowners make the right choice.

“A front door is the true threshold of the home — the first impression and the final flourish”

Luxury begins with detail, and Ruislip’s collection of windows demonstrates how thoughtful design can enhance both comfort and style. Their range includes classic casement windows, elegant flush casements, and heritageinspired box sash designs — available in modern, durable materials such as uPVC and aluminium. Each option combines thermal efficiency with visual refinement, offering homeowners the opportunity to enhance their property in a way that complements its character.
The company also supplies premium systems such as the Residence Collection, known for its ability to replicate the authentic charm of traditional timber windows. With deep colours, traditional hardware, and exceptionally crafted profiles, these windows deliver the timeless warmth of classic joinery while providing the practicality of modern engineering. Enhanced energy performance, minimal maintenance, and refined aesthetics ensure that the windows are as functional as they are beautiful.
A front door is the true threshold of the home — the first impression and the final flourish. Ruislip’s door portfolio includes composite front doors, aluminium designs, and a full suite of glazed options such as French, sliding, and bifolding doors. Each is engineered for security, weather performance, and visual appeal, allowing homeowners to choose a style that complements both architecture and lifestyle.

Bifolding and sliding doors, in particular, have become a signature offering. These wide-opening designs invite natural light into the home, blur the boundaries between inside and out, and add a sense of openness that aligns perfectly with contemporary living. Whether it’s a minimalist aluminium system or a more traditional style, the emphasis remains the same: precision, smooth operation, and lasting quality.
For homeowners seeking to expand their living environment, Ruislip Windows & Doors offers bespoke conservatories and orangeries. These additions are designed to feel like a natural extension of the home — bright, inviting spaces that offer year-round comfort. Whether the aim is a garden-view retreat, an elegant dining area, or an expanded recreation space, the company’s designs combine modern materials with classic architectural lines. The result is a room that not only adds space but enhances the entire character of the property.
Their conservatories are created to be virtually maintenance-free, energy-efficient, and structurally sound, reflecting the same standards that define all of Ruislip’s work.

“For homeowners who value elegance, comfort, and authenticity, Ruislip offers more than windows and doors — they offer the opportunity to reimagine the very soul of the home”

A luxury experience extends beyond the product itself, and Ruislip maintains its reputation through attentive, dependable service. Installations are carried out by experienced fitting teams, supported by skilled in-house service engineers. Homeowners receive insurance-backed guarantees, and the company is fully registered with industry bodies including FENSA and CERTASS. It is an assurance of compliance, safety, and long-term protection.
Customer testimonials echo a consistent theme: professionalism, friendliness, and the reassurance that comes from working with people who take genuine pride in what they do. Many clients highlight swift installations, clear communication, and competitive pricing — a combination that reflects both premium service and honest value.
From Watford to Uxbridge, Beaconsfield to Northwood, Ruislip Windows & Doors has shaped homes across the region with an approach defined by craftsmanship and integrity. Their longevity in an ever-changing industry stands as proof of their commitments: to quality products, thoughtful design, and exceptional service. For homeowners who value elegance, comfort, and authenticity, Ruislip offers more than windows and doors — they offer the opportunity to reimagine the very soul of the home.

What’s the most important element of the dining experience? The table? The chairs? The food we share? Or the people we enjoy it all with? We’d argue it’s a delicate balance of all four.
As we’re focusing on what we know best (and having already explored dining tables) we’ve pulled together a “save me a seat” shortlist of dining heroes to sink your teeth into. These are the designs that have you scrambling (pun intended) for an excuse to gather friends and family to the table. The sort of around-the-table action that would have even King Arthur browsing the menu for a longer stay.
So, feast your eyes, prepare your moodboards, and discover below 10 of the most iconic dining chairs that your home could have.
VITRA:
When compiling a list of the most important

interiors in history, a general rule of thumb is that if it was designed by Charles and Ray Eames, it usually makes the cut. From lounge chairs to wall racks, and even the occasional elephant, their work includes designs the world will never forget. In this case, the Eames Shell Chairs stand (or sit) as the very embodiment of the mid-century dining setting: shapely, subtle, and suitable for almost any space. After all, there’s a reason Vitra continue to produce modern variations to this day.

CARL HANSEN:
The aptly named Wishbone Chair sits high on the wish lists of design enthusiasts the world over. Nearly 75 years ago, it debuted as an instant icon, marking the beginning of Hans J. Wegner’s legendary collaboration with the Scandinavian masters Carl Hansen & Søn. Crafted through more than 100 artisanal steps, the result is a serene and stylish piece that wouldn’t look out of place in the dining rooms of Nordhavn.
KNOLL:
A Knoll collection that needs no introduction by a designer of equal stature, Eero Saarinen’s Tulip Dining Chairs remain a timeless icon. Rooted in pure mid-century style and defined by generous sweeping curves, their sculptural pedestal base was Saarinen’s answer to what he called “the slum of legs” beneath the dining table. More than 65 years on, they endure as an award-winning, filmfeatured, retro-futuristic favourite.
FRITZ HANSEN:
As feats of invention go, 1955 was a golden year. Velcro was patented, the first microwave was introduced and, most importantly, Arne Jacobsen unveiled his magnum opus: the Series 7 Dining Chair. Unlike many of his other designs, it wasn’t created for a specific project, giving it a unique advantage: versatility. From the cosiest cottages to the grandest lecture halls of Oxford, Fritz

Hansen’s finest remains an essential wherever Scandinavian design is celebrated.
Much like the band, once Gubi’s Beetle Dining Chair was discovered by the design world, its popularity soared. A true line-blurrer, it transcends genres of interior design, adapting effortlessly to countless styles and settings. In our showroom, its many variations have been among the longeststanding features in an ever-evolving display. Why? First, because it works seamlessly with almost everything. And second, because ten years after GamFratesi first designed it, it remains exactly what furniture lovers want.
Sometimes tributes to legends become themselves legend. This is true of the Kartell Masters Dining Chair. If this piece of furniture looks a little familiar that’s because you’ve already seen it. A monument to the classics of the design world, the seating solution is shaped from the silhouette’s of the aforementioned Series 7, Tulip & Shell Chairs. While inspired by timeless greats, Philippe Starck’s chair became its own design hero when winning a Red Dot award in 2013. chaplins.co.uk

The Baked Tile Company offers a fresh take on classic marble in new Strata collection
Independent tile retailer The Baked Tile Company is putting a bold spin on marble in new wall tile collection Strata. Available in three commanding colourways, Green, Ochre and Ivory, Strata has the same organic appeal as marble with a contemporary twist.
Its stunning use of colours and intricate detailing creates a captivating visual experience that is suitable for use in many design schemes.
And like real marble, each tile varies from the next so homeowners can be sure of a unique finish.
However, unlike the real thing, Strata is manufactured from ceramic so doesn’t require the same level of upkeep. It’s also a little kinder on the bank balance too.
Lesley Taylor, Founder of The Baked Tile Company, said: “Marble is a timeless classic, but this collection takes the allure of authentic marble and builds on it with its strong use of colour.
“Strata manages to be both luxurious and completely grounding at the same time.”
Strata Green offers a captivating blend of punchy greens, chalky taupe and amber highlights, while Strata Ochre boasts swirls of caramel, amber, and clay, making each piece feel like a slice of sun-baked stone.
Strata Ivory brings a slice of serenity with its pale creamy hues and pops of soft beige creating an elegant and tranquil effect.
Each tile measures 10cm x 30cm and can be laid in many different patterns, including brick bond, offset, stacked or herringbone.
The Strata Collection is available now from The Baked Tile Company.
The Strata Green 10 x 30cm tile is a striking choice for those who wish to infuse their spaces with vibrant energy and natural elegance.
These tiles work wonderfully when paired with limewash walls and natural ceramics, allowing their

remarkable tones to truly shine.
Consider incorporating raw textures and a touch of olive-toned greenery to enhance their earthy appeal.
Whether you’re aiming for a rustic charm or a contemporary edge, the Strata Green tile adapts beautifully to various design schemes.
Embrace the serene elegance of our Strata Ivory tiles, where pale, creamy hues meet a quietly refined design.
These tiles offer a calm foundation rich with interest, as swirls of soft beige and warm ivory drift across their surface, creating an elegant and timeless effect.
Perfectly suited for bathrooms, utility spaces, and minimalist kitchens, Strata Ivory tiles bring a sense of tranquillity and subtle refinement to any room. Their honed finish adds a layer of tactility that is both subtle and satisfying, encouraging you to run your fingers over their smooth surface.
Golden-toned and gorgeously layered, the Strata Ochre tile beautifully mirrors the organic allure of natural marble.
To achieve a truly warm and grounded aesthetic, pair these tiles with rustic woods and matte black fittings. Dark paintwork will further accentuate the rich tones, drawing attention to the natural beauty embedded in each tile’s unique pattern. From bakedtiles.co.uk

Imagine the scene: a bustling Christmas morning kitchen. The smell of cinnamon and roasting turkey (or perhaps a glorious festive breakfast) fills the air. A loved one leans in to season the gravy, and there, sitting proudly on the counter, is a charming wooden T&G Christmas Tree Mill . Or maybe they reach for the adorable T&G Snowman Mill to perfectly season the scrambled eggs.
These mills capture the playful spirit of the holidays. Crafted from natural wood, they feature high-quality ceramic mechanisms, which means they are built to last—turning a whimsical holiday novelty into a genuine kitchen heirloom.
One of the most wonderful things about these mills is the variety of styles, allowing you to choose the perfect match for any festive home:
• Classic Cheer: The traditional Natural Wood Christmas Tree Mill blends beautifully into a rustic, Scandi, or minimalist setting.
• A Pop of Festivity: Choose the vibrant Red or the deep, elegant Green to make a bold statement next to your holiday platters.
• Modern Elegance: The chic Black and soft White options bring a sophisticated, contemporary flair to the dining table.
Whether adorning the Christmas dinner table or standing watch over the counter as you prep the turkey, they are a charming accent that signals the start of the holiday season.
While they look like delightful decorative ornaments, these are serious, practical kitchen tools. The ceramic mechanism is non-corrosive and fully adjustable, making them suitable for grinding salt, pepper, and even dried herbs and spices.
When you gift a T&G Christmas Mill, you’re giving:
• A Memory: A subtle reminder of happy times cooking and eating together every time they reach for it.
• Quality: A premium, durable mill with a guarantee, designed for daily use.
• Festive Joy: A piece of Christmas magic that will be unwrapped and displayed year after year.
This year, skip the generic stocking fillers and choose a gift that combines exceptional utility with irresistible festive charm. The T&G Limited Edition Christmas Mills are a truly cherished present that will be part of their Christmas story for many seasons to come.

British fabric house Linwood is delighted to unveil Titania, a new collection of embroidered fabrics that reimagines traditional stitchwork with a fresh, modern spirit. From delicate florals to playful stripes, each design began as a handdrawn sketch in Linwood’s Hampshire studio before being translated into intricate embroidery on natural cloths.
Full of texture, charm, and artisanal detail, Titania offers a versatile range of decorative fabrics for curtains, blinds, cushions, headboards, and occasional upholstery. Presented in both soft neutrals and uplifting colourways, the collection blends simplicity with craftsmanship, delivering an unmistakably British style suited to both heritage and contemporary interiors.
Hermia A playful reimagining of the stripe, Hermia introduces undulating waves and geometric bands embroidered on pure linen. With its naïve stitch and textured details, this fabric brings colour, rhythm, and artisanal charm.
Oberon A contemporary take on stitchwork,

“A
playful reimagining of the stripe, Hermia introduces undulating waves and geometric bands embroidered on pure linen”

Oberon’s lively embroidery forms a diamond trellis with subtle rickrack detail. Woven on a cottonlinen ground, it balances graphic precision with handcrafted sensibility.
Lysander This lyrical all-over embroidery combines flowing ribbon motifs with delicate florals, inspired by an archive design from circa 1900. Stitched on pure linen in a refined chain technique, Lysander brings a graceful, decorative quality.
Helena Striking in scale, Helena presents a stylised oak-leaf trail stitched with the traditional couching method. Flowing across a cotton-linen ground, its bold scale and classical detailing create a distinguished effect.
Titania reflects Linwood’s design ethos: heritage artistry interpreted with a modern sensibility. Each fabric balances decorative stitchwork with practical applications, offering designers and homeowners alike the opportunity to create interiors that are tactile, timeless, and full of personality.
Available now, the Titania collection adds a new dimension to Linwood’s portfolio of decorative textiles – celebrating the enduring beauty of embroidery in any home. linwoodfabric.com
