Running from 5 April until 5 October 2025, the exhibition explores the wide-ranging talents of May Morris, the younger daughter of Arts & Crafts designer, William Morris.

Brownsea Island is now open for the season and the National Trust team are excited to welcome visitors back. This year brings several changes, firstly a wonderful new addition, the Fine Foundation Lookout. A wildlife observatory that serves as a new gateway to the island, offering spectacular views over the Lagoon, which is home to many different bird species. The Lookout is set amongst trees and is designed to age gracefully into the natural surroundings and not cause any disturbance to wildlife.

The British Motor Yacht Show – the UK’s most prestigious showcase of motor yachts – is set to return to Premier Marinas’ Swanwick Marina on the River Hamble, Hampshire, from 15 – 18 May 2025, with a record number of new UK model launches and an unrivalled line-up of luxury brands.

BROWNSEA ISLAND WELCOMES VISITORS BACK WITH NEW CHANGES FOR THIS SEASON

rownsea Island is now open for the season and the National Trust team are excited to welcome visitors back. This year brings several changes, firstly a wonderful new addition, the Fine Foundation Lookout. A wildlife observatory that serves as a new gateway to the island, offering spectacular views over the Lagoon, which is home to many different bird species.

The Lookout is set amongst trees and is designed to age gracefully into the natural surroundings and not cause any disturbance to wildlife. Inside the building visitors will find beautifully designed interpretation that provides information about the island’s wildlife.

A large, detailed map highlights the best spots to explore the island’s woodlands, wetlands, and stunning beaches.

The Lookout was commissioned as part of the Dorset Wildlife Trust Wild Brownsea project working in partnership with the National Trust. The project is part funded by the National Heritage Lottery Fund with contributions from the National Trust, the Fine Foundation, and Dorset Wildlife Trust supporters. Other project work recently undertaken on

Brownsea Island, includes new boardwalks, and improved access to the bird hides.

This year also sees changes to how visitors access the island, unfortunately the Sandbanks jetty started to collapse towards the end of last year and has now been dismantled by a local contractor.

Recognising the jetty’s aging condition plans for a new, improved jetty have been submitted and construction work is set to commence soon. This will ensure the future of travel from Sandbanks to Brownsea Island.

Additionally, there is a change in the ferry service for 2025. Greenslade Pleasure Boats will now operate ferries to Brownsea Island from their orange kiosk opposite Tesco Express on Poole Quay. More information can be found on the Brownsea Island or Greenslade Boats websites.

Restaurant Review:

RICK STEIN SANDBANKS A FEAST BY THE SEA

T

ucked along the coast with panoramic ocean views and the scent of salt in the air, Rick Stein is the kind of seafood restaurant that reminds you why people travel for good food. With its warm atmosphere, attentive service, and a new bar menu that reads like a love letter to the sea, it’s no wonder this spot has become a local favourite and a bucket-list destination for seafood lovers.

From the moment you walk in, the ambiance sets the tone.

It’s nautical without being kitschy—think driftwood accents, large windows that frame the crashing waves, and low, golden lighting that makes everything feel just a little more special. The gentle murmur of diners and the occasional clink of glasses create a hum that’s lively but never overwhelming.

We started with the Tuna Tartare, Sashimi and Mussels with yellow kroeung, coconut

milk and makrut lime leaf, and they were nothing short of divine.

Each dish was served looking beautifully presented and perfectly cooked. The dishes balanced the richness of flavours, with the freshness of the sea in a way that made it difficult not to order another round.

For mains, we tried the Singapore Chilli Crab Burger with Seaweed Salt Fries and the Beef Barbacoa. The burger was a showstopper, indulgent, and brimming with generous juicy and perfectly cook soft shell crab. It was well-seasoned, with just the right touch of chilli to brighten the dish. The Beef Barbacoa, meanwhile, had a delightful seasoning of chipotle, garlic and oregano, giving it a bold flavour that contrasted beautifully with the salsa on top. It’s the kind of dish that hits you with complexity in every bite but never feels overthought.

One of the pleasant surprises was the Sashimi, something you can just tell the chef is very proud of.

accompaniment of Wasabi, Japanese Horseradish, and Pickled Ginger. Pair this with some of the restaurants abundant wines and you have yourself a dish to remember.

Drinks at Rick Stein are equally well-executed. The wine list is thoughtful, featuring plenty of coastal whites, light reds, and sparkling options that pair perfectly with the menu. The cocktails are inventive without being gimmicky—the “British Bramble”, made with Gin and Blackberries was a personal favourite. It felt like summer in a glass.

Dessert was a bit of a surprise. We weren’t expecting much beyond the usual suspects, but the Chocolate Fondant was perfectly executed, silky, and paired with the most delicious and indulgent pistachio ice cream, it was a satisfying and elegant end to the meal.

Service deserves its own spotlight. The staff were knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and never intrusive. Our server gave sincere recommendations, knew the provenance of the seafood, and checked in just enough to make us feel cared for without ever rushing us. You could tell there was a shared pride in the place that extended from the kitchen to the front of house.

Whether you’re a seafood connoisseur or just someone who appreciates a beautifully cooked meal, Rick Stein delivers an experience that feels both special and grounded. It’s the kind of place that makes you want to linger over a glass of wine, savour every bite, and maybe even plan your next visit before the dessert plates are cleared.

enjoying the new, great value dishes and more relaxed, drop-in, feel for our bar. I personally love the Singapore chilli soft shell crab burger, a modern take on a classic from our flagship in Padstow, and the tuna poke bowl - a light, fresh way to enjoy seafood. Great for the summer days ahead!”

MERMAID TAIL ART UNDER THE HAMMER FOR JULIA’S HOUSE

ore than 40 local, national and international artists have contributed stunning designs for The Great Tail Trail, which is making waves across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole. Once the public art event is over, you could take home your favourite one-off piece of art as a lasting reminder of the trail.

The giant mermaid tail sculptures are on display until 1 June, creating an unmissable art trail through some of the region’s most popular locations and raising vital funds and awareness for Julia’s House children’s hospice.

The colourful sculptures will go under the hammer with professional auctioneer, Charlie Ross, at the Italian Villa, Compton Acres on 20 June, giving you the opportunity to own a unique work of art by an acclaimed artist. All the funds raised at auction will help Julia’s House continue its lifeline of care for seriously ill children and their families across Dorset.

Artists who have contributed work to the trail include internationally renowned contemporary artist, Stuart Semple, Tech Moon (Krishna Malla), Lucan Art (Miroslav Lucan), Lauren Marina, Kizzi Bennett and Double Olympian marathon runner and Commonwealth medallist, Liz Yelling. Locally, you may have seen Jill Busby’s design A Twist in the Tale on Sandbanks beach, with Fossil Fables by Karis Harrington close by at Shore Road.

he Russell-Cotes Art Gallery & Museum is thrilled to announce its upcoming exhibition, May Morris: Art & Advocacy, which is on loan from the William Morris Society. Running from 5 April until 5 October 2025, the exhibition explores the wide-ranging talents of May Morris, the younger daughter of Arts & Crafts designer, William Morris.

An extraordinary woman in any era, May was a talented embroiderer, designer and advocate for women in the artistic community. May wrote towards the end of her life: ‘I’m a remarkable woman, always was, though none of you seemed to think so’.

Her astonishing accomplishments as a designercraftsperson and advocate were largely forgotten until the end of the twentieth century, when public interest was renewed. May Morris: Art & Advocacy, seeks to further public knowledge about er wide-ranging talents and accomplishments.

May Morris was much like her father – talented in many artistic fields and a committed socialist. She became Head of Embroidery at the decorative arts

firm of Morris & Co. aged just twenty-three, as well as designing wallpapers for the company. May excelled in the field of fine needlework, producing designs, teaching courses, lecturing, and writing numerous articles and a book on the subject. She co-founded the Women’s Guild of Arts in 1907 to enable female artists and crafts makers to fully engage with and participate in artistic culture.

Before this, female artists had been restricted by a lack of arts and crafts organisations extending membership to women. The Women’s Guild of Arts enabled members to discuss, develop and exhibit their artworks. May placed significant efforts on maintaining her father’s legacy and greatly contributed to the literature on William Morris including editing the 24 volumes of her father’s collected works.

SANDBANKS CARE HOME RESIDENTS ENJOY NOSTALGIC

VINTAGE CAR RALLY

are home residents in Sandbanks were thrilled to see a host of vintage cars roll into the car park for a special display.

Residents at Marjorie House care home welcomed Dorset Austin Seven Club to display their vehicles, dating back to the 1920s and 1930s, as part of the home’s spring fayre event. They were joined by several other vintage cars and military vehicles owned by local residents.

Myrna, who lives at Marjorie House, said: “It was a very good event. It was nostalgic for people like me.”

Pam, who also lives at Marjorie House, said: “It was lovely. It took me right back. It’s amazing that these cars are still around.”

Richard Brown, a member of Dorset Austin Seven Club, said: “It was a dream to support the Marjorie House team with this event.

It’s a lovely care home with an incredible view, which served as the perfect backdrop for our cars. We’ve already been asked to come back, and our members are more than happy to as they had a fantastic time.”

The event at the care home on Crichel Mount Road also featured a range of stalls selling gifts, skincare, toys and crafts, as well as a barbecue which residents, their families and visitors enjoyed in the sunshine.

Marjorie House opened to new residents last year, and has recently been recognised by carehome.co.uk as a Top 20 Care Home in the South West of England. The care home has been built in an Art Deco-style, offering ensuite bedrooms with scenic views over Poole Harbour. Each floor has a dedicated dining area, activity spaces and lounges where residents can socialise and relax. There is a wide choice of facilities for residents to use, including the Captain’s Club bar, hair salon and nail bar, terraced gardens, sensory areas, courtyard, and there is even a putting green.

The care home is owned and operated by Care South, a not-for-profit charity which runs care homes and home care services across the south of England. The Boodles Raindance Garden commemorates the 25th anniversary of the ‘Raindance’ jewellery collection. Inspired by the impact of water on stone, the garden reflects the style and motifs of the jewellery. Against the backdrop of lush green ferns, beautiful flowers such as Astrantia ‘Shaggy’ and Paeonia ‘Noémie Demay’ stand out like gemstones. Seating areas provide tranquillity amidst the lush greenery, creating a serene and restful atmosphere.

Tackle HIV Challenging Stigma Garden - designed by Manoj Malde, built by JJH Landscapes. The garden draws inspiration from the significant scientific and medical advancements made in HIV treatment over the last 40 years. Today, individuals living with HIV on effective treatment can anticipate a long and fulfilling life without limitations.

Hexagonal paving reflects a key chemical structure found within many HIV medications. Water flows under a bridge, symbolising the transition to a healthy life supported by community.

here’s a moment, maybe an hour or two after the boat leaves the dock, when the world you left behind begins to blur. The sounds of the city, the hum of traffic, the endless to-do list—they all start to fade as the engine hums steadily beneath your feet and the horizon stretches wide and blue before you. That’s the magic of a private boat charter. It’s not just about being on the water—it’s about the space it creates between you and everything else.

Our charter began on a sunlit morning at the marina. The boat, a sleek 40-foot Bavaria Sport, looked like something pulled from a dream—polished teak, stainless steel, plush seats, sundecks and comfy cushions, and a crew who greeted us with easy smiles and chilled champagne. There’s a quiet kind of luxury in stepping aboard something that’s been prepared just for you. No waiting, no crowds, no schedules—just the ocean, the wind, and a full day ahead.

Once we pushed off from the marina, the mood shifted. The land slipped away behind us, and the gentle rocking of the boat quickly replaced the mental noise most of us carry. Some of us sprawled on the sun deck, skin warming under the rising sun, while others made their way to the bow, faces turned into the breeze, eyes scanning the water for elusive Dorset dolphins.

There was laughter, yes, and music playing softly through the boat’s speakers—but there was also a reverent silence that settled over us now and then. As if we all instinctively understood we were somewhere special.

Our captain, Gary, charted a course that took us to Pottery Pier. As the boat anchored and the engine quieted, we prepared ourselves for the arrival of our Jet Skis and instructor for the day, something we had been excitedly waiting for. We floated lazily on paddleboards or simply drifted, eyes closed, letting the salt and sun do their healing work.

Lunch was served on deck—a grazing platter of savoury delights and the show stopping sea food platter. It was the kind of meal that tastes better simply because of where you’re eating it—surrounded by sea and sky, salt on your lips, bare feet brushing against the warm wood of the deck. We ate slowly, letting the day unfold in no particular hurry.

One of the revelations of a boat charter is the way it recalibrates time. The hours don’t tick by the same way they do on land. There’s no rush, no itinerary to chase. Just the gentle pull of the tide and the promise of what’s around the next bend in the coastline. We cruised past rocky cliffs and hidden beaches, sometimes stopping just to float, sometimes leaping into the water again, just because we could.

As the sun began to tilt toward late afternoon, golden light spilled across the water. The boat turned back toward the marina, but no one seemed eager to reach land. The breeze had cooled slightly, and someone passed around blankets as we lounged on the deck, watching the sky melt into soft oranges and pinks. Conversations grew quieter. Phones stayed in bags. No one was documenting, posting, or checking in. The only thing that mattered was the present.

By the time we returned to the dock, the day had done something to us. We stepped off the boat salt-haired, sun-kissed, and somehow lighter. Whatever we’d carried aboard—stress, fatigue, deadlines— had been rinsed away by the sea.

Today, visitors will find an outstanding collection. The Manor has so many intriguing stories to tell; its collections span over 300 years and reflect the lives, ideas, and creative legacy of those who lived and stayed there. Perhaps the most famous, is the portrait of Jane Morris by Rossetti, The Blue Silk Dress, which was completed in 1868 and is currently hanging in the White Room.

ongborough Festival Opera is an internationally recognised summer opera festival taking place in the picturesque Cotswold village of Longborough, near Stowon-the-Wold and Moreton-in-Marsh.

It is often described as the friendliest opera festival in the country: you will feel you are amongst friends, while enjoying world-class performances of full-scale opera in beautiful surroundings.

The theatre: What was once a chicken shed is now a working theatre featuring an orchestra pit for 70 players modelled on the theatre at Bayreuth, and seats from the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden.

Sixth Form to me is about students discovering their passion, developing that interest and exploring the different experiences that can help them fly as individuals beyond school. Whilst schools are restricted by the exam specifications, it is also imperative that schools provide experiences, opportunities and education that reaches beyond the confines of a traditional classroom environment. At RMS we offer students the opportunity to chair boardroom meetings with people from industry, teachers

and like minded students, discussing topics such as ‘Does AI have a place in the world of education?’ and ‘Can food supply ever be globally sustainable?’. Students have ‘Futures’ lessons, covering topics from creating a LinkedIn profile, to women’s health, to disagreeing well. Each week there is ‘Flexitime’ as part of the curriculum where students might have Prefect team meetings, be mentoring younger students, meeting to discuss Oxbridge or Medical applications, attending workshops on US university or degree apprenticeship applications or working individually on ‘going beyond’ tasks to help them explore their subjects beyond the curriculum.

Often schools measure their success through A Level exam results; whilst this is always a nice accolade for any school, to me it is the individual stories of success that we see through each student’s journey beyond school which is the real measure of success. Last year alone we had students going to over 30 different UK universities to study over 30 different courses, we had students going to top art and textiles colleges, music conservatoires, the USA and the Netherlands, degree apprenticeships at the likes of Amazon and KPMG and also some taking GAP years or going straight into the world of work.

These outcomes highlight their individual sense of empowerment.

went to prep school in London a long time ago and still have extremely fond memories of my time there. Most of my memories are academic, as that was the focus of prep school life back then. It was classic learning for the love of learning—something that really appealed to me. I was never under pressure about senior school entrance exams, and I never associated prep school with stress. I doubt my parents did either.

Sadly, those days feel long gone. With oversubscribed senior schools and growing social media pressures among parents, childhood in London now seems far from stressfree. PRIVATELY EDUCATED PEOPLE DOMINATE TOP BRITISH JOBS The study, by the Sutton Trust education charity, shows that virtually every key profession is dominated by privately educated pupils grabbing the senior management/director positions

heir grip on power is most noticeable in the judiciary, where 74 per cent of leading judges (those in the High Court or Court of Appeal) were privately educated.

Figures in the report also show that one in three MPs (32 per cent) was privately educated – as were half the members of the Conservative Cabinet. Even in Jeremy Corbyn’s Shadow Cabinet, 13 per cent of members went to private school. Nationally, the figure is just 7 per cent.

The report, carried out by Dr Philip Kirby, goes on to show that 71 per cent of senior Army officers – two-star generals and above – went to private schools. Only 12 per cent attended comprehensives.

In medicine, 61 per cent of doctors were privately educated while 22 per cent went to selective state grammar schools and just 16 per cent to comprehensives. The list goes on – 48 per cent of civil servants were educated privately, 29 per cent went to selective grammar schools and 23 per cent to comprehensives.

The higher echelons of journalism are also dominated by the private sector, with 51 per cent educated in independent schools.

And of those chief executives of FTSE 100 companies who were educated in the UK, 34 per cent were privately educated.

Nearly half the top actors – 42 per cent of Bafta Award winners – went to private schools, fuelling criticism that the profession is becoming more elitist.

“Our research shows that your chances of reaching the top in so many areas of British life are so much better if you went to an independent school,” said Sir Peter Lampl, the chairman of the Sutton Trust.

“As well as academic achievement, an independent education tends to develop the essential skills such as confidence, articulacy and teamwork, which are vital to career success.

avid Beckham’s fashion sense is almost as iconic as his football career. Ever since he stepped out in an allleather two-piece with his then girlfriend, Victoria, his style has become a unforgettable.

Beckham not only pushed boundaries stylistically, but subverted gender stereotypes through fashion at a time when male footballers were observed through a hyper-masculine lens.

The 1998 World Cup in France is still a moment fans discuss to this day.

“Twenty years ago when I wore that sarong, people were shocked,” Beckham told the Telegraph in 2018. “It was an outrage; ‘why are you wearing that? What were you thinking?’ Today no one bats an eyelid if a guy wears a sarong in the street.”

Beckham has been a trailblazer, influencing how British men dress for almost 30 years.

As the star turns 50, we look back at his most influential fashion moments throughout the years…

2000

Beckham burst onto the scene in 1996, when on 17 August that year he scored a legendary goal for Manchester United, becoming a household name ahead of the Premier League season.

Just a year later, the star began dating Spice Girls singer Victoria Adams – a fashionista in her own right – and the couple’s styles became iconic.

The pair stepped out on red carpets in all things leather and animal print, and in 2000, Beckham memorably wore a sleeveless shirt and a durag to greet the then Prince of Wales at a party for the Princes Trust.

It was once of the first instances that Beckham’s ensemble garnered more attention than Victoria’s, and cemented him as a male fashion icon.

But Beckham stepped up the simple ensemble with boho beads – a big trend of the early 2000s, thanks to the likes of Sienna Miller and Kate Moss.

Once Beckham showcased his bohemian necklaces alongside a V-neck white shirt on the red carpet of a private party at the Royal Albert Hall – a whole host male British celebs started sporting the trend – from Top Gear presenters to young royals.

2005

Come 2005, Beckham went back to wearing some showstopping suits.

From questionable croc print to iridescent suits, in summer of that year Beckham stepped out in a shiny plum suit with a romantic ruffled white shirt, as he and his wife left Claridge’s restaurant in London.

The pair were en route to one of Elton John’s infamous starstudded soirees, and it was this moment that Victoria’s own style stuck out, as she wore a blue and white printed Roberto Cavalli dress that caused a stir in fashion circles.

2001-2

Once the 2000s were underway, Beckham leant into the neutral beige and brown tones that were all the rage.

His day-to-day uniform became a white T-shirt and jeans – and his statement accessory tended to be his jacket.

Beanies and baggy puddle jeans became synonymous with the star and his relaxed aesthetic tapped into the men’s streetwear trends of the time.

2003

Following the birth of their second child Romeo in 2002, David and Victoria headed back out onto the red carpets – most memorably in matching white and rhinestone ensembles to the 2003 MTV Movie Awards.

The pair were famed for their couple power dressing – being dubbed the British Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake – following the US singers’ all-denim red carpet looks in 2001.

Off the carpet meanwhile, the Beckhams were still known for their coordination, sporting simple silhouettes such as jeans and blazers so as not to attract attention.

2004

This outfit formula continued into 2004, as Beckham began to wear

2013-16

But upon entering a new decade, Beckham leant back into his rugged sense of style, sporting more leather and less denim and opting for black over his usual lighter hues.

The star also began to wear shorter sleeves again that showed off his tattoos.

It was around this time when the idea of streamlining and forging a capsule wardrobe became popular among mainstream fashion enthusiasts. And for Beckham, sticking to one colour – albeit black – made coming up with outfits that much easier.

2017

2006-7

From 2006-7 Beckham still played into his smartcasual formula day-to-day, incorporating waistcoats and shirts alongside baggy jeans.

While his off-duty outfits were relaxed somewhat scruffy, he stepped up his red carpet looks, as Victoria began to find her minimalist signature style – Beckham followed suit.

2010

The words cool and casual had become synonymous with Beckham’s effortless style, and the football star’s jeans and a white-T became the go-to off-duty ensemble for celebrities across the board.

Pared with some Ray-Ban aviators – the trending sunglasses shape of the 2010s – Beckham became the pinnacle of male style inspiration.

On chillier days, the star sported double breasted jackets and striped scarves, still, of course, in a neutral palette.

2012

In 2012, Beckham’s style became more pared back – literally, in some cases – as the ex-footballer collaborated with H&M on a bodywear collection featuring cotton trunks and tight vests.

To the launch however, Beckham layered up in a cream knitted cardigan and drainpipe jeans.

Beckham’s style had become less flashy and more comfy following the birth of their fourth child and only daughter, Harper Seven, in 2011.

In 2017 Beckham started to dabble in a more countryfied aesthetic, sporting heritage tweed, brown suede and forest green on public appearances.

It seems Beckham was channelling the surroundings of his new Cotswolds estate, that he and Victoria bought in 2016 for a reported £12 million.

The family began splitting their time between Chipping Norton and their Holland Park townhouse in London, as Beckham became more interested in farming, hikes and country living.

2021 – today

The ‘quiet luxury’ trend kicked off in 2020 and seems to have infiltrated everybody’s wardrobe – and David Beckham’s is no exception.

His smarter looks have started to lean more into traditional tailoring; opting for double breasted suit jackets over more modern sports coats.

Indulging in pocket squares and pinstripes, Beckham’s style now juxtaposes the rugged countenance he became known for, often covering his tattoos with longer sleeves.

Beckham’s smart style coincided with him becoming the face of Hugo Boss in May 2024.

It was a somewhat unsurprising collaboration, as the sports star is no stranger to the world of fashion, having previously collaborated on collections with H&M and Kent & Curwen.

As Beckham enters his 50th year, it seems his iconic style is only improving with age.

THE FERTILITY CENTRE

F

ormerly the Assisted Conception Unit, The Fertility Centre is a longstanding centre of excellence for fertility treatment and care at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital. In 2021 they enlarged the Centre with a new satellite service at West Middlesex University Hospital, extending patient care and convenient access across West London.

The Centre provides a broad and comprehensive range of fertility services to their patients – including IVF, ICSI and IUI – but their areas of particular expertise, include the management of women and couples over the age of 40, premature ovarian ageing or low ovarian reserve, and male or sperm-related infertility issues.

Notwithstanding their expertise in these complex fields, The Fertility Centre continues to perform very well in its success rates. They hold one of the highest clinical pregnancy rates amongst NHS hospitals in the UK (please visit hfea.gov.uk for further information) and welcome NHS-funded patients and those seeking to self-fund their care and treatment.

As well as treatment for those trying to conceive now, The Fertility Centre offer services for those who are considering their ability to conceive in the future. Fertility preservation through egg or embryo freezing is becoming increasingly popular and they can provide these services through their dedicated Fertility Preservation programme.

he design playground of the 2025 Salone del Mobile furniture and design fair, and the evergrowing Milan Design Week that blossoms around it, saw the city once more basking in interiors innovations, pioneering product design, and shifting perspectives on space.

The ambiance was mindful, subdued, even tentative, chiming with the fair’s theme of ‘Thought for Humans,’ which honed in on the power of design to support wellness and bring people together.

Neutrals and naturals reigned, with luxury design brands from around the world leaning into an organic palette and the materials of nature as well as carefully refining and extending their current collections, plus mixing in a few surprises along the way.

2025’s defining trends emerged from a hush of calm and quiet confidence, with just enough offbeat character to keep us guessing.

It was a sea of soothing shades, natural materials, soft tactility and grounded forms – designs that whispered rather than shouted. THE NEUTRALS:

TEXTURED GLASS:

It’s the time of misted and molten glass. Misted glass has a frosted or opaque finish, so light passing through it is diffused, creating a soft, less defined glow. Molten glass is filled with ripples and movement, like it’s not quite set yet (perhaps having oozed from the earth or poured forth from a volcano), most often transparent but distorting light that does pass through. Both approaches feel organic,

yet toy with shadow, skewing it for a floaty, ethereal, am-I-awake effect.

LACQUERED LUXE:

If you want even, uninterrupted, slickest of the slick surfaces, it’s lacquer you’ll be turning to this interiors season. Becoming more and more apparent on the decorative scene of late, it’s now glided right into the spotlight. Its silky finish negating the need for bold statement colour, the high-gloss finish itself is the main attraction as light bounces dramatically from its look-over-here polished coat.

The contemporary lacquered pieces combine the traditional finish with clean, minimalist forms that hint at the sculptural with the simple shapes enhanced by impactful lustre.

While we’re talking of folds, the influence of the king of undulating layers echoed through time this year, making his presence known across a range of brands and designs. Remember… the Michelin man? In need of the most brilliant shine and most uninterrupted sheen of them all? You’re in luck, as the metallic of 2025 is a silver-toned, chrome-y, mirror-like reflection. No longer just a throwback to retro futurism or a subtle accent, it’s now fully dominating the scene with its liquid silver-style surface turning furniture and beyond into statements that radiate high-voltage polish. Colour? We’ve all but forgotten what it is at this point as light zips across chrome’s surface, catching every curve, edge and angle with assertive precision that feels fresh, refined and fearless.

FOLDED FORMS:

We’re welcoming into the fold pieces that exhibit textural tucks; those that show off how they’re artfully shaped and gathered into being. Furniture using its very construction and structure as decoration, and as a leading part of its personality. The move creates visual rhythm through pinches and pleats, and brings softness to hard materials. Such silhouette-led tactility turns each design into something almost garment-like – tailored, detailed and sensorially engaging.

EXTERNAL ELEMENTS:

When high-end materials and artisanal craftsmanship come together, it’s hard to resist adding just a little more. That’s why our next trend explores designs that whisper, “Just a little something extra.” A lounge chair wrapped in a second skin of leather, or a sofa calling for the warm embrace of its outer shell – these are the pieces that quietly insist on an extra layer of luxury.

WILDCARDS:

There have to be some. Those designs that go against the grain, that don’t even bother looking up to see what the rest of the world is doing. CURTAINS UP ON LONDON’S BEST KEPT SECRET

rom the elegant terraces of Mayfair to the artistic enclaves of Notting Hill, the most fashionable windows in London have one thing in common: they are dressed by Pat Giddens, leading curtain-maker behind some of the most exquisite interiors in Britain – and one of London’s best kept secrets.

Over 100 years on from the first Giddens’s drapery, Pat now sits at the head of the business, combining impeccable heritage with contemporary style and flair.

“I was weaned on a diet of curtains and upholstery” says Pat, whose father Maurice built up the business from his workshop in Lincoln. One project in particular—a tented room with a copy of the Chinese Chippendale bed at the V&A, complete with cast resin dragons—would propel the business into an entirely new world.

“It was at a party on this country estate where Maurice was noticed by celebrities, music producers, performers not to mention European royalty. From then on it was one celebrity commission after another, from the palaces of the Sultan of Oman to David Bowie’s homes in London and Mustique.”

“We were very much sought after and captured the lust for exotic among the glitterati of the era.

Spending time in Green Space

T

he garden is an important part of the any home fortunate enough to have one. Traditionally the transition between the inside and rear garden was marked by utilitarian structures like outdoor toilets or garden sheds. However, most modern homeowners are keen to improve this relationship and blur the threshold between the house and garden.

Research has shown that spending time in green space or bringing plants and greenery into your everyday life can benefit both your mental health and physical wellbeing.

We approach our design work holistically and consider both the garden and house from the beginning of our process. We often consider the outdoor space to be an additional room to the house that has the potential to be better inhabited.

At our Walled Garden project we designed a garden that would be beautiful to look at but would also define ‘moments’ within it. We proposed lush foliage, ornamental grasses and ferns that could withstand the South facing aspect and equally thrive in the dappled light beneath the canopies of established trees beyond

the property. Within this garden space, two different seating areas are defined; one level with the internal living room and can be used as a public space for entertaining and another further back, more private.

These are separated by a wildlife pond and path interwoven within the planting, creating moments for pause and contemplation.

We proposed a new dining space at our Suppertime project which was conceived as a ‘thread’ connecting the various spaces through which it passes. The concept echoes a ‘street party’ style of dining, where the table shifts and extends when needed, rather than being defined by a dedicated dining ‘room’. This hard working new addition allows the family to be flexible with supper clubs spilling into the kitchen and the garden when extra space is needed.

At our studio we are in the unique position to offer both architectural services and garden design. We work together with our clients to provide planting lists that include year round interest and develop maintenance plans. The Nagel family’s roots in retail and hospitality shaped their approach, infusing a deep commitment to customer care into everything they created - a philosophy that would propel Neatsmith from a small workshop to a celebrated name across London and beyond.

The story started in a single showroom above their North London workshop, where Neatsmith focused on designing and creating luxury wardrobes - hinged, sliding, and walk-in designs - tailored to each client’s needs. Philipp and Mathew brought youthful energy and innovative ideas to the young brand, drawing on their hospitality background to prioritise both the product and the customer experience. In those early days, every piece was handmade in-house, a tradition that became a cornerstone of Neatsmith’s identity.

The UK furniture market in 2005 was dominated by massproduced built-in wardrobe options, but Neatsmith found its niche by offering bespoke luxury fitted wardrobe solutions as an innovative new way to add storage space to a home effortlessly; giving people the chance to create their dream bedrooms.

Ed – Good to meet you. Put simply, we make bespoke bars – primarily for private homes. I work closely with each customer to design a bar tailored to their specific needs and style. Every project is unique.

LM – Is most your work in London?

Ed – We actually work all over the country. We build most elements off-site, which keeps disruption to a minimum during installation.

Being based in Fleet, just off the M3, we’re well placed to serve London and the Home Counties, but we also travel further afield.

LM – How did this come about?

Ed – It all started during lockdown. A friend and I began building bars because, well, everyone was drinking at home! I’ve spent 20 years running pubs, so I wanted to bring that experience into creating domestic bars that felt authentic and functional. By 2024, I brought Barred into Timber Technology to scale up and deliver at a higher level. Now, with our skilled team and facilities, we can work with any material to build almost anything. It all comes down to the client’s vision—and whether the budget matches their ambition.

LM – Have you got any advice for our readers?

Ed – Definitely! Pinterest is a fantastic resource for inspiration. If you come to us with an idea of what you like, materials, finishes, vibe, it helps us guide the design process and make your vision a reality.

LM – How long does your process take?

Ed – On average, it’s about four months from the initial consultation to final installation. That timeline can vary depending on how quickly we arrive at a design and how complex the build is.

LM – Budget- always a difficult question?

Ed – Haha, yes, always! We are at the high end of the market, building pieces that are as much furniture as they are functional bars. Think of it like a bespoke kitchen, the materials are often similar, but bars can be a little more fun, with lighting, mirrors and custom features.

Created from American black walnut and black-stained sycamore, the cases housed some of the rarest whiskies in the world and celebrated British design and charitable giving.
