On Sunday 6th May 2012 Sandbanks in Poole, the fourth most expensive place to live on the planet, is set to become home to the very first Speedo Spring Swim. With race HQ in the stunning beachside area of Branksome, the Speedo Spring Swim tracks the Sandbanks shoreline along a course that makes for sea swimming at its best. e brand new addition to the 2012 Speedo Open Water Swim Series includes distances of 500 metres, 1000 metres and 1.5 kilometres meaning there is something for everyone that wants to wash away a winter spent in the pool. According to John Lunt, MD of organisers Human Race, the looped course and three distances to choose from are designed to make the event perfect for beginners and experienced swimmers looking to try something new. “We all know the Open Water Swimming community thrives on fresh challenges and an early season open water swim with an expected sea temperature of around 12 degrees certainly falls into that category! Even if you aren’t an experienced swimmer, taking to the sea in Spring is the ultimate way to bring in the new season, revitalise yourself after the Winter and take on a fresh new challenge in the lead up to a Summer set to be packed full of sporting endeavour in the UK.” – we take a look at this new and exciting event. Poole-based artist Kathryn omas is celebrating the launch of her new collection by hosting her longest exhibition, ‘Kathryn omas Shining Lights 2012’, from Sunday May 6 to Monday June 4 at her studio on West Quay Road. Every day for a whole month, the studio will be open to the public from 11.00am to 7.00pm. Inspired by a variety of natural light shows across Canford Cliffs and Poole Bay, ‘Shining Lights’ will exhibit more than 30 oil paintings illustrating the changing light and its impact upon the land, sea and sky. e artwork of Kathryn omas hangs on the walls of collectors all across the world from Iceland to Australia, but this is the first time in her 25-year career that Kathryn has created an entire collection focused on one location. Kathryn omas explains: “Since relocating from Bristol to Poole, I’ve become fascinated by the stunning surroundings of my new environment and I’m excited about the challenge of conveying these sometimes majestic sometimes quiet sights through my art to a new audience. On a universal level, through painting I hope to encourage people to be aware of the power of nature and to realise our fleeting relationship with this planet.” As a highlight of the summer season, the Asahi British Beach Polo Championship will return for its fifth year on the 6th and 7th of July 2012. Playing host to polo’s finest sportsmen, the hotly anticipated beach festival promises excitement and glamour both on and off the pitch. Taking place at Sandbanks, Britain’s premier beach location, the 2012 Championship will see England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales come together for the first time to compete on the beach. Life Magazines are the very proud sponsors of the Scotland team for the 2012 Championship and will be supporting them through the lead up to July and of course at the event itself – we take a closer look at one of the finest events in the area. Happy Easter and enjoy your issue.

Sarah Hunt, New Forest Marque Manager, said: ‘e New Forest is e Queen’s larder – as the Forestry Commission manages the Crown lands on her behalf. e New Forest has had a strong link with the monarchy since William the Conqueror declared it his royal hunting ground in 1079.

‘e Forest is famous for its venison, wild mushrooms and pannage pork*. We have great food on our doorstep that needs to be celebrated. ‘e school will also be working closely with the National Park Authority’s Education Team which will be teaching pupils about the history of New Forest food. is is an important part of the competition for students to understand where their food comes from.’ Gill Hickman, Sustainability Co-ordinator at Ringwood School, said: ‘e students have a passion for growing and cooking. is competition combines both local food and grow-your-own. I am looking forward to seeing what ideas the students will come up with.’ ‘It is important to support local producers,’ said Aiden Chitty a sixth form Principal Student at Ringwood School who is part of the ‘Cook for the Queen’ team. ‘We should be proud of the food available in the New Forest. It is too easy to go to the supermarket and not pay attention to what we are buying.’ e students will work with teacher Sarah Stewart and will receive a helping hand from James Golding, Head Chef at e Pig in Brockenhurst. ‘I can’t wait to get involved in the project,’ said James. ‘e ‘Cook for the Queen’ team is going to come to e Pig with recipe ideas and I am going to bring them to life.’ e competition was launched at a special lunch at Ringwood School where students were treated to local New Forest Marque produce from Tatchbury Manor Farm, Lyburn Cheese, e Real Jam and Chutney Company, Spice ‘n’ Easy and Scotch eggs from e Mill at Gordleton. e closing date for entries is Monday 30 April and the winners will be announced in mid-May ■

local life

SLEPE FARM SOLAR POWER STATION Hidden away in the sleepy Dorset countryside near Poole is a working organic beef and corn farm in the Dorset Green Belt which has been owned by the Selby Bennett family for four generations.

S

lepe Farm consists of about 220 acres of organic crops and pasture and about 4,000 acres of heath grazing. e farm itself contains a wide variety of important wildlife environments including a lake, a river, woods, heather covered heath land and sustainably farmed farm land. Amongst the acres of organic crops and pasture there is a field that looks a bit different to all the others. Farm Power Generation Limited and the Selby Bennett family have collaborated together to build a half-megawatt solar power station. Unusually the field itself is remaining in agricultural production. Specifically the land not covered by the array is being used for growing organic grass and clover to be made into silage for Slepe Farm’s cows and, nearby, for growing cider apples to be made into cider. e land covered by the solar arrays should produce a shady and undisturbed habitat which will also encourage wildlife. Pioneering farmer James Selby Bennett (who is also a senior partner at the local firm of solicitors, Humphries Kirk) tells Life Magazines about his solar panel field “What is interesting about it is that the field on which it sits is still an arable organic field in sustainable production. e field produces high quality clover forage for the farm’s beef cattle overwinter- in summer they range the neighbouring heath - this is Dorset ranching!” James explains that “e crop being grown is literally long term sustainable - the clover will fix nitrogen to permit the grass to grow. We may even not need to re-seed it at intervals - we shall have to wait and see - no-one has grown a crop so long term as this locally! e clover also fixes proteins which makes the forage high quality for the cows. is is important because it means that the land is remaining in a sustainable state with no concrete and plenty of habitats for wildlife. e fencing may make the area more valuable for wildlife as it may exclude certain predators at least for a short while.” e array has been harvesting sunlight all through the winter (very successfully) and produces enough electricity for the whole parish.

Solar Farm__ 02/04/2012 12:54 Page 2

local life SLEPE FARM SOLAR POWER STATION e solar power station has a capacity of 500 kilowatts and will generate sufficient electricity in a year to power 120 average UK households. It is located in an organic arable field in the centre of the farm, invisible from any public place and virtually invisible from outside the field itself. e facility is completely silent and produces no waste or other pollutants. Unlike very large solar arrays being developed in other parts of England, the Slepe Farm array has required little change to the local grid, and is also in harmony with the field size and the landscape of this beautiful part of Dorset. James Selby Bennett said “my family are very proud that our family farm has been able to integrate into it this facility which takes up about a hundredth of our farm but silently produces sustainable and renewal electricity for the whole community”. e UK has to decommission 80% of its coal-fired, and 60% of our existing nuclear electricity generating capacity in the next 10 years so the need to produce more renewable energy sources is becoming more and more urgent. Small scale renewable power stations, such as the Farm Power solar PV array at Slepe farm, provide electricity close to consumers, avoiding distribution losses and providing twice the delivered electricity of remote power stations. Mark Simon, Managing Director of Farm Power, said “anks to the Selby Bennett family and our contractors, Farm Power has been able to deliver the Slepe Farm solar power station in record time, to budget and while managing all the complex risks associated with renewables. We are very proud that the commissioning of our anchor site at Slepe Farm has been such a success and look forward to commissioning more solar and river-based hydropower generation sites around Dorset in the coming years.” www.farmpowergen.co.uk ■

DISCOVER DORSET

L

iving in this area we are fortunate to have an enormous amount of natural beauty on our doorstep, from the famous Jurassic Coast across seven miles of sandy beaches over to the New Forest all surrounded by idyllic omas Hardy countryside we are truly spoilt for choice. Happily, our local destinations and favourite Sunday walks are well known but what Life Magazines wanted to discover were the hidden gems and more of the less well known activities available in the area that take you to those ‘off the beaten track’ destinations. A new favourite of mine and certainly a big hit on Mother’s day was Sculpture By e Lakes in Pallington, despite living in Dorset all my life I had never been to this little hamlet on the outskirts of Dorchester but with the help of my sat nav and some helpful locals I found it. Hidden along the tranquil valley of Dorset’s River Frome is England’s newest sculpture park. Set amongst 26 acres of parkland including lakes, the river, streams and ponds are beautifully inspiring sculptures by Simon Gudgeon. Exchange stuffy museums on a lovely sunny day for carefully positioned benches and perfect picnic spots which let you sit down and admire the sculpture; it is a wonderful way to enjoy art. If you’re in Bournemouth and fancy escaping the hustle and bustle there are some lovely walks from roop mill along the river which don’t have sculptures but do have an abundance of nature which is especially beautiful at this time of year.

Or you can explore the Victorian Boscombe Gardens which has recently been restored with a £2million project bringing the gardens back to their best including the Italianate Gardens which really are a secret hideaway and the perfect place to stop off on your way to the beach. For a more alternative and adrenaline fuelled experience there’s so much to choose from across Dorset and Hampshire including zorbing, clay pigeon shooting, dirt buggies, rock climbing, water sports, the list is endless. ese activities aren’t just for special occasions or holidays, have a go at the weekend with friends or family for a more exciting way to spend the weekend.

BEING CHILDREN

New Forest NEW LIFE

e familiar rumble and judder of car wheels on metal poles marks the passage from the mundane into the magic as you enter the spectacle of the New Forest. Like a teeth-chattering time portal, the crossing of one of the many cattle grids signifies a transition into a very special place, steeped in history and its beautiful heath and woodland have changed very little over the centuries. Created by William I in 1079 as a hunting forest for deer and wild boar, the New Forest was formed at the expense of more than 20 small hamlets and isolated farmsteads. Two of William's sons died in the Forest: Prince Richard in 1081 and King William Rufus

II, known as Rufus the Red, in 1100. Local folklore claimed that the deaths were punishment for the crimes committed by William when he created his New Forest. Today, killings can be made by those lucky enough to be able to afford some of the fantastic properties on offer in this unique part of the south of England and the hunting is done by those searching for bargains in some of the New Forest’s high class galleries and antiques shops or its many local craft shops. Designated as a National Park in March 2005, it is an ideal destination for the lone traveler, couples or families for day visits,

weekend breaks and longer holidays. Home to around 180,000 people, of which approximately 50% are over the age of 44, the New Forest offers a warm welcome to visitors and has much to offer. e villages of Hythe, Lymington, New Milton, Ringwood and Totton still hold weekly markets offering a vast array of local produce and the area is strewn with a number of high quality cafés, bistros and restaurants. For those looking to stay a little longer there is a variety of accommodation available from campsites to simple B&Bs and 2 up to 5 AA Red Stars hotels. For some it might even prove to be the perfect location for that fresh start that they were looking for and an opportunity for new beginnings. So if you are considering a change of pace and looking to leave the Rat Race behind, then look no further than this special corner of Hampshire and its idyllic villages, leafy lanes and picturesque, greener pastures. Life in the New Forest really is a welcome step back in time and as one looks at the vista of verdant, mossy heath land, dotted with explosions of yellow gorse and purple heather, you could quite easily imagine a mounted hunter on a frosty spring morning, crossbow in hand, thundering into view on a steam-snorting beast in pursuit of some wide-eyed prey or picture a summer’s day of home-made ginger beer and jolly adventures, a group of four children in shorts and hand-knitted tank tops, freewheeling on their bicycles with legs akimbo, having a spiffing time with their keen border collie running alongside and barking excitedly. Countless motorists speed past on the nearby M27, embroiled in the hubbub of today’s frantic and frenetic lifestyle. If they’d just slow down and take a turn to the south they would find themselves immersed in eye-pleasing countryside, with a panoply of flora and fauna and take pleasure in a far more sedate and less stressful pace of life. ere is a palpable sense of weight being lifted and a downshift in gears not only to reduce your vehicle speed but your mind and body too. We spend so much time in an indoor environment or traveling in our cars to get to our next cocoon of bricks, glass and steel that we easily forget the simple pleasures that life offers. Step out of your car and into the environs of the New Forest and you’ll discover that there is nothing better for the soul than a walk in the ancient woods, dappled light playing through the leaves, the Sun warming your face and the bright colours and heady scent of wild flowers and pollen seducing your senses. e sight of wild horses cantering across the heath, throwing their heads and playing freely is truly liberating or a couple of New Forest donkeys ambling down the middle of the road will simply make you stop and smile. If this sight fails to cheer you up because you’re in a hurry, then it really is you that is in the wrong place and the only ass on the road is the one without four legs. Venture a short distance from the forest to the towns and you’ll find that the atmosphere is noticeably calmer, the people genteel and as you walk the streets you can feel a spring in your step as if your daily woes and pressures have been spirited away. If you’re looking for a little more adventure and energetic pursuits then the New Forest can cater for the outdoorsman in you too and offers archery, cycling, fishing, horse riding and walking. Travel a few miles to the south and you’ll find mile upon mile of exquisite coastline and the chance to enjoy watersports such as sea fishing, sailing, canoeing and kayaking. Quite simply the New Forest has a great deal to offer, it is quite breathtaking and has a magical, ethereal charm. Visit it once and you may never want to leave ■

With audiences ranging in age from five to 60 plus, there was an act for everyone to enjoy and the atmosphere was electric. Wave 105 presenters, Mark Collins, Steve Power and Rick Jackson, hosted the evening, giving the station’s listeners the chance to see them live and put a face to the name. Simon Clarke interviewed each act in the Green Room after their performance, which was aired for all to watch in between performances. Fresh from a tour with pop-gods e Wanted, Lawson kicked-off Wave 105 Live! with their set of light rock. four-piece Cover Drive. ey really brought the crowd alive with their R&B and reggae-infused set. Lead singer, the stunning Amanda Reifer, got the crowd grooving when she performed the band’s number one hit single Twilight. Go West proved they still had it as they got not only their 1980’s fans dancing away to their vintage hits but also the younger members of the audience. eir 1985 hit single, Call Me, went down a storm and lead singer, Peter Cox’s, distinctive vocals certainly have not been touched by time. Looking glorious on stage in sky-scraper Christian Louboutin heels, Queen of UK Soul, Beverley Knight blew the audience away as she belted out her hit anthems including Mama used to Say and Shoulda Woulda Coulda. It was her first ever show in Bournemouth. With more than a million album sales under her belt and numerous awards including three MOBO awards and BRIT and Mercury Music Prize nominations during the last seven years,

Beverley Knight did not disappoint. Another fabulous femme-fatale was next to hit the stage, the stunning and mesmerising Caro Emerald. e Dutch star was joined on stage with her ten-piece swing band and a DJ. Caro’s songs evoked those big band jazz albums from the 1940s and 1950s but with a modern twist. Her retro style was emulated in at Man, which has a Charleston-type of feel, in combination with the modern mixing and samples. In 2012, Caro beat a record set by Michael Jackson’s riller, by spending 30 weeks at number one in the album charts in Holland. With band-mate Una on maternity leave, e Saturdays were a fabulous four-piece as Vanessa, Rochelle, Frankie and Mollie came out in force. Clad in gravity-defying heels and lip-glossed to the max, the girls proceeded to sing through their much-loved hits and early material such as Up and Ego to the more recent All Fired Up. e crowd went wild for the girls’ up-beat pop anthems. e girls kicked-off their 2011 tour in Bournemouth so they were really pleased to return to the town. e big finale of the evening was the mighty Will Young, who did not disappoint as he took to the stage with four backing dancers. Donning a ‘Back to the Future’-influenced shirt, he left the Bournemouth crowd begging for more as he performed three hits from his latest album, along with a clever and subtle contemporary dance routine. He ended the night on a massive high with his latest track Jealousy. With a performance like that, it is easy to see why the original ‘Popstars’ winner has had such an illustrious career, spanning a decade. To add to the celebrity fun of the evening, Beales set up a pop-up shop complete with TV, music, make-up and fragrances. e store’s ‘Young Fashion Brands’ were showcased on rails for people to browse through and goodie bags with cosmetic samples were handed out to everyone who came through the door. Laura Mercier make-up artists glammed up the audience with touch up make-up before they had the opportunity to have their pictures taken as a lasting souvenir of the event. Keith Penny, Wave 105 Live! Event Director, said: “With the event selling out a week before the show, we were so pleased with how the evening went. e crowd were all in fantastic spirits, dancing away to many of the acts”. “It was great to see such a diverse age range all having such a fun time together. Following the inaugural Wave 105 Live! last year, we wanted to thank our loyal fans in the south by putting on an even bigger and even better evening of big-named acts for an affordable ticket price. We can’t wait for the next one now, so watch this space Bournemouth!” ■

Every day for a whole month, the studio will be open to the public from 11.00am to 7.00pm. Inspired by a variety of natural light shows across Canford Cliffs and Poole Bay, ‘Shining Lights’ will exhibit more than 30 oil paintings illustrating the 32

changing light and its impact upon the land, sea and sky. e artwork of Kathryn omas hangs on the walls of collectors all across the world from Iceland to Australia, but this is the first time in her 25-year career that Kathryn has created an entire collection focused on one location. Kathryn omas explains: “Since relocating from Bristol to Poole, I’ve become fascinated by the stunning surroundings of my new environment and I’m excited about the challenge of conveying these sometimes majestic sometimes quiet sights

through my art to a new audience. On a universal level, through painting I hope to encourage people to be aware of the power of nature and to realise our fleeting relationship with this planet.” ough inspired by the Dorset coastline, the setting of her paintings will not be easily recognisable as Kathryn’s works are not intended to be exact copies of nature. She aims to surprise by using different techniques of application to make the image appear different each time the viewer looks at it, depending on their mood or perspective. From an autumn dawn, through the glow of a midday winter sun, to a long summer evening, her visions are recreated

ere is a waiting list for a Kathryn omas commission and her unique talent is called on to complement special design projects in both private and corporate premises. Kathryn has previously had the pleasure of exhibiting on Cork Street, London, Bristol, Cannes, the Netherlands, Texas and Reykjavik but is excited to be hosting her latest show in her hometown of Poole. Kathryn adds: “I am looking forward to sharing the next stage of my career with the public through the ‘Shining Lights’ exhibition this spring.” She will be at the studio throughout the exhibition to answer queries, share thoughts and listen to opinions regarding her new collection.

through natural oil paints on to high quality linen. Kathryn’s techniques are in a constant flux of experimentation and development. LORD BUTE AND THE GROUNDS OF HIGHCLIFFE CASTLE

T

he grounds of Highcliffe Castle is the most peaceful and perfect place to relax, to enjoy the wonderful view of the Needles and the cliffs of the Isle of Wight across Christchurch Bay. is vista has changed very little since the 18th century when John Stuart, 3rd Earl of Bute, had a mansion built on the cliff top amongst the heath land. is Scottish nobleman, escaping from his ensnarement in political wrangles, came south to pursue his love of botany in the New Forest. One day, his journey led him to the coastal cliffs where he exclaimed, “is is the fairest view.” He decided to build a ‘bathing box’, but in the end it became a mansion with wonderful gardens. is was the first High Cliff built in 1773. John Stuart was born in Edinburgh in May 1713; unfortunately his father had died by the time he was 10, making him 3rd Earl of Bute. Educated at Eton, holidays were spent with his mother and her two brothers. ese were his three guardians. His love of botany may have

34

APRIL2012

started with his uncle and one of his guardians, Lord Archibald Islay, a botanist who was known for the introduction of foreign trees into England and the cultivation of exotic plants. Bute ended his education when he was 17 and undertook a trip to Holland, which included a period staying at Leyden, a place known for its botanical tuition. His political career commenced not long after his marriage to Lady Mary Wortley Montagu in 1736. During the Lords election of 1741 he lost his seat and then spent the next few years on the Isle of Bute, enjoying his botanical pursuits and learning aspects of agriculture and architecture. His botanical knowledge was becoming recognised, linking him to the key people in the plant world. is was the time of hundreds of new plant specimens coming into the country. A shrub, which had been brought back to England and first flowered in 1742, was named in Lord Bute’s honour ‘Stewartia malacodendron’ (silky camellia). It originates from the south eastern area of the United States. A day at the races brought

Bute into contact with Frederick, Prince of Wales and a companionship formed, with Bute becoming Lord of the Bedchamber. Frederick was a keen gardener, residing with his family at the White House at Kew near London. is was once the home of Sir Henry Capel whose garden was known for its well-chosen shrubs and trees. During March 1751, Frederick caught a chill and died 15 days later. Augusta Dowager Princess of Wales appointed Bute as ‘finishing tutor’ to her son George. In her widowhood Augusta found solace in botanical interests and aided by Bute added to the collection at Kew. It seems that a number of the plants were selected from the garden of the late Duke of Argyll (Bute’s uncle) from his residence at Twickenham, in particular the maidenhair tree (Ginkgo Biloba) planted in the 1750s and moved to Kew in 1762. is deciduous tree originates from China and is related to the cycad. e garden landscaped by Capability Brown at High Cliff would have been different from the designs he used for inland

estates, in which he used contours of hills and serpentine lakes. e land at the coast was bleak and uncultivated. Brown used Scotch firs and pines, intermixed with some of his favourite trees. ese conifers provided a shelter belt from winds blowing across from Christchurch Bay, allowing other trees and shrubs to eventually thrive. At High Cliff the property included a laboratory, natural history and fossil room, with a conservatory 250 feet long where plants were grown in soil. ere was also room for a collection of books and cabinets for specimens to be housed. A botanical garden was built to the east of the house, with high walls to protect the new plant specimens just reaching this country coming into Bute’s possession. He used native plants at High Cliff to make observations for his botanical tables. Sections of the garden were created for experiments, like at Kew, but on a smaller scale. Large greenhouses also protected tender plants. A kitchen garden was also built away from the main house, so it was hidden by trees and had a gravel ‘service road’.

John Stuart Marquess of Bute

One of the first fuchsias found its way into Bute’s collection, a great rarity at the time. Mostly native to Central and South America, the first of these species was named Fuchsia triphylla with clustered blooms, arriving in this country in 1703; another early one was discovered in 1714 and called Fuchsia coccinea (may not have reached Kew till the end of 1780s). It seems as though one of the first fuchsias and a camphor tree still survived in the gardens at Highcliffe from Bute’s time until the late 19th century. Violet Stuart Wortley writes in 1927, about Bute’s “Volumes of careful entries with illustrations testify to the immense labour devoted to the classification of flora found in the neighbourhood and the place where each specimen had been gathered, Sea-kale from Calshot and Eaglehurst, Sea-radish at Muddiford, the glades of the forest yielded Gladioli illyricus, and its marshes were rich in sun-dew (Drosera anglica).” e cliffs along this coastline have always been subject to erosion and Bute’s head gardener was very troubled whenever the cliff at Highcliffe collapsed. He used to describe how he would

“turn a walk and turf it over before his Lordship appeared, and to conceal a fresh fall of cliff.” He described that at the cliff edge you could take a carriage down to the sea front by a zigzag road. e zigzag path down to the beach still exists. In 1790, Lord Bute was reaching over the cliff to capture a much coveted plant, unfortunately he fell in the attempt and hurt his leg. It appears that he never fully recovered and died on 11 March 1792, aged 79. e current building on this site known as Highcliffe Castle has been described as arguably the most important surviving house of the Romantic and Picturesque style of architecture, which flourished at the end of the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th century. Its significance is recognised nationally by its Grade 1 status on the Statutory List of Buildings of Special Architectural and Historical Interest. ere is an international importance, too, for as well as a number of new botanical species which were introduced into the original garden from abroad by

Lord Bute in the 1700s, a large amount of medieval French masonry, shipped across the Channel, was used in the Castle’s construction. It is this Norman and Renaissance carved stone, along with the Castle’s Gothic revival features and ancient stained glass, that make it appear older than it is. Built mainly between 1831 and 1836, the Castle is the realisation of one man’s fantasy. He was Lord Stuart de Rothesay, a distinguished diplomat who had known and loved the cliff-top site overlooking Christchurch Bay since he was a boy. When he built Highcliffe Castle he was following in the footsteps of his grandfather, Lord Bute, who had built an earlier mansion ‘High Cliff ’ on the cliff-top site when it was just open heath land. e Castle, once lavishly furnished in the 18th century French style played host to royalty, the rich and famous. It remained a family home until the 1950s but two fires in the 1960s rendered the building derelict and in 1977, to prevent further deterioration, Christchurch Borough Council purchased it.

Today the Castle’s renovated exterior is testimony of the remarkable skills of craftsmen and women who carried out a huge repair and conservation programme in the 1990s, jointly funded by Christchurch Borough Council, English Heritage and a £2.65 million grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund. In 1998 a further programme of renovation was completed to enable public access to the State Dining Room, Butler's Pantry and East Tower. Christchurch Borough Council is preparing to make a bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund to complete the next phase of renovation at Highcliffe Castle. is will be to reopen the Penleaze wing and create a new heritage centre. A key feature of the project will be the repair, conservation and display of the medieval stained glass collection of Lord Stuart de Rothesay. e original Victorian kitchen will be repaired and it is also hoped that some of the original Marshal Ney furniture will be returned on loan from the Victoria and Albert Museum. Work will not be confined to the Grade 1 listed Castle, but will also develop the grounds into a heritage park thus preserving the important work done by the Stuarts of Highcliffe, initiated by Lord Bute, and the unusual plants still growing there. e Castle is now a popular tourist attraction, community space and wedding venue. Each year the Castle hosts a varied programme of events that offers something for all tastes. Within the Castle staterooms talks, workshops, crafts fairs and evening concerts are on offer and outdoor highlights include car rallies, theatre and big band jazz and swing concerts. JOIN THE BIGGEST FIGHT AGAINST CANCER THIS SUMMER WITH

RACE FOR LIFE 2012

36

APRIL2012

CANCER RESEARCH UK is urging women and girls from across the UK to gather friends and family and join the biggest fight against cancer by taking part in Race for Life 2012. Everyone can help beat over 200 types of cancer and help more men and women to survive this awful disease that affects more than one in three people in the UK. Whatever age or fitness level, women can walk, jog or run 5k at over 235 Race for Life events across the UK. For those looking for a bit more of a challenge, there is also a 10k route available at 25 venues. Emma Gilbert, head of Race for Life, said: "Every two minutes someone in the UK is told they have cancer. It touches so many lives and the back signs worn by everyone taking part are a moving reminder that women are taking part to celebrate lives that have been saved, but also sadly lives that have been lost. We are asking women to unite, take part in the biggest fight against cancer, and raise money for Cancer Research UK's life-saving work into all types of cancers, because it is 'all of us v cancer' and together we can help more people survive." Women get involved for many different reasons. Some are cancer survivors,

while others want to celebrate or remember the lives of family, friends or loved ones. Others simply want to come together, have a great day and raise money. Family and friends play an important part in Race for Life -many volunteer at events, help with fundraising or simply cheer on their loved ones on the day. Since it began in 1994, an incredible six million participants have taken part in Race for Life raising a massive £457 million to fund Cancer Research UK's vital work. In 2012, Cancer Research UK hopes to raise £55 million. Cancer survival rates have doubled in the past 40 years and Cancer Research UK's work has been at the heart of this progress. But there's still much to be done and the money raised through Race for Life, will help save even more lives. You can join in at the following venues taking place locally to you DORCHESTER 20TH MAY BOURNEMOUTH 17TH JUNE SHERBOURNE 24TH JUNE POOLE 24TH JUNE Sign up for Race for Life 2012 now at raceforlife.org or call the hotline on 0871 641 1111. conic is a term reserved for few things in life. Making a significant mark on the cultural landscape must surely be a requirement for this status. A cultural icon is readily recognized and generally represents something with great cultural significance. It becomes ubiquitous and moulds into the consciousness. Sculptor Simon Gudgeon is making a significant mark. Sculpture by the Lakes is now the only single artist sculpture park in the UK and attracting large visitor numbers to it in the tranquil, beautiful Dorset countryside. He has also had considerable influence on the art landscape across the globe. His catalogue of achievements is enviable and only matched by his boundless energy and creative abilities. ree of his

beautiful sculptures have embarked on an extraordinary journey toward cultural celebrity. In 2009 ‘Isis’ was installed in Hyde Park on the banks of the Serpentine, the first piece of public art to be installed there in 50 years. is magnificent bronze sits in Hyde Park next to the Serpentine. All the more remarkable as generous donors helped to raise £2.2 million to build the Isis Education Centre which enables communities and especially city school children, to enjoy and experience the wonders of nature and learn about the importance of protecting and preserving the environment for the future. e Centre is right in the heart of the Park. Simon says “A unique feature of the Isis Project is its approach to fundraising for education purposes marking a shift from a public funding model toward an

exciting collaborative partnership around public art.” In this case the innovation is the idea of Halcyon Gallery President, Paul Green who, along with Simon Gudgeon, gifted the large 'Isis' sculpture to the Park and who both continue to support the education project. Simon’s signature smooth style is captured in the much sought after ‘Isis’. Sculpture by the Lakes recently installed its own three metre ‘Isis’. Her gentle form and serenity are in perfect balance with the beauty of the Dorset landscape around her. So it is no surprise that she has found her way into many private homes and can also be seen at the home of His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall at Highrove. Across the Atlantic, Isis will also weave her magic in the new Sculpture Trail at America’s National Museum of Wildlife Art in Wyoming. Overlooking the National Elk Refuge, the trail will also feature many other permanent and temporary works of art. Another monumental piece is the pair of human heads known as ‘Search for Enlightenment’. Wherever it is placed it seems to sit perfectly in its surroundings. On the banks of the ames at Millbank, it shares centre stage with Henry Moore’s ‘Locking Piece’. e iconic gazing pair sits majestically while the hustle and bustle of the city relentlessly goes on. In contrast, at Sculpture by the Lakes the heads face East into the rising sun while the beautiful River Frome musically meanders beside them. Everyone comments on this extraordinary piece. It is a real ‘show

stopper’. Simon remarks “Without interpretation or explanation, each individual finds his or her own meaning in it. And often people share similar thoughts on the piece.” Simon’s inspiration for the piece was found on holiday in Africa. " I stood on a 240 million year old mountain in Africa and watched the 4.6 billion year old sun descend below the horizon. As the light diminished the 200 billion stars in the Milky Way began to glow in the night sky. Our galaxy extends for 100,000 light years and is part of a Universe that is 93 billion light years across. e Universe is over 10 billion years old and consists of hundreds of billions of galaxies. It is at that moment I began to grasp the narrowness of consciousness, the vastness of time and the transience of humanity." e latest addition of ‘Search for Enlightenment’ is in Hyde Park next to the prestigious “One Hyde Park’ address. Whilst inside the atrium of this exclusive Candy and Candy development is Simon’s stunning and vibrant ‘Dancing Cranes’. Despite this impressive CV, Simon is most at home in the peaceful, tranquil surrounds of his Dorset home. He and his wife Monique share this unique and extraordinary place with us. Sculpture by the Lakes near Dorchester, is the ever-changing canvas against which Simon’s art is magnificently displayed. For more information visit www.sculpturebythelakes.co.uk ■

team from the Bournemouth Highcliff Marriott Hotel joined more than 100 strollers on Saturday to complete the 5 kilometre Starlight Stroll in aid of the Lewis-Manning Hospice in Poole. e charity provides high quality hospice care for local people with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses. Staff from the hotel took part in the event to show their support for the Lewis-Manning Hospice, the hotels chosen charity of the year for 2012. 2012 also marks a significant milestone for Poole’s Lewis-Manning Hospice, as they celebrate their 20th anniversary. Wearing flashing head boppers, the Starlight Stroll walkers travelled along Poole bay up to Evening Hill in Lilliput to the site of the charity’s brand new state of the art hospice. Maria Tidy, Fundraising Manager at Lewis-Manning Hospice said: “It was a successful night with fun had by all. It was good to see the stroller’s reactions when they stepped into our new hospice, many of them thought it was incredible and felt proud they were helping to make a difference to our patients.” e late Marjorie Lewis-Manning, a local woman who dedicated her life to helping others coping with cancer, left her home to be a hospice and for 20 years Lewis-Manning has provided free support for local people living with cancer and other life-limiting illnesses. e hospice staff and volunteers have another extra special reason to celebrate this year as they prepare to move into a brand new state of the art hospice. e new hospice, due to open in May, will be an expansion to the charity’s existing services, but will also provide a bedded unit for rehabilitation, respite and end of life care. Over the past two decades the charity, supported by over 200 volunteers, has become well established in the local community. Specialist staff

Andrew Francis, General Manager of the Bournemouth Highcliff Marriott Hotel hopes that the hotel will make its mark in the local community by supporting a local cause. ‘Many of our employees have been touched by cancer in some way and we hope that by supporting Lewis-Manning Hospice we will be able to give something back to the local community and to help make a positive difference.’ So far the staff at the Bournemouth Marriott have raised £200 in a charity staff raffle, £265 from donating £1 for every VIP fitness centre pass purchased last month and over £200 last weekend through participating in the Starlight Stroll. Staff are also due to help physically revamp the charities 10 hospice shops in the local area. Sally Goodenough, Lewis-Manning Hospice Corporate and Legacies Fundraiser said ‘We are delighted that the Marriott is supporting us and it couldn’t have come at a more exciting time as we celebrate our 20th anniversary and as we prepare to move back into a brand new state of the art hospice to continue providing free high quality hospice care to local people’. Lewis-Manning Hospice is currently raising funds for its £2.8 million Time to Care Appeal for their new facility which will include a 23 bedded unit for palliative care, day hospice and lymphoedema and breathlessness clinics. n Sunday 6th May 2012 Sandbanks in Poole, the fourth most expensive place to live on the planet, is set to become home to the very first Speedo Spring Swim. Even if you aren’t an experienced swimmer, taking to the sea in Spring is the ultimate way to bring in the new season, revitalise yourself after the Winter and take on a fresh new challenge in the lead up to a Summer set to be packed full of sporting endeavour in the UK.” If you took part in the Speedo Open Water Swim Series (or any other open water swimming event) in 2011, the Speedo Spring Swim is a great way to take on something new and challenge yourself further. It’s also a great way to prepare for a season of triathlon or prepare for a longer swim challenge later in the year. As with every event in the Speedo Open Water Swim Series, the Spring Swim sees water safety provided by the experienced Human Race Water Safety Crew backed up on the day by local experts from the Beach Lifeguards and local lifesaving teams. e annual Animal Windfest event also taking place in Poole in September this year sees the addition of multi-distance open water swimming to the wide-ranging menu of outdoor activities on offer. Forming part of the five-event Speedo Open Water Swimming Series for 2011, the September Poole swim will see up to 1,000 swimmers take to the water over distances ranging from 750 metres up to the full three kilometres. e route of the swim will track along the side of the world-famous Sandbanks peninsula, something which John Lunt, Director or organisers Human Race, thinks will make the event especially attractive to swimmers from right across the UK and beyond. “Poole is a great area with lots to offer to people interested in outdoor sports. We chose Sandbanks for the swim because the setting is fantastic, the conditions are great for swimmers and the beaches are perfect for spectators too.” Not so local Fred Pearce from Australia will be taking to the water in Poole this year. “I will be on holiday from Australia and cannot resist a swim in the UK. I am certain my 1500m Sea swim in Poole will be a highlight of my time away. It will also be used as warm up for a Triathlon I will be competing in a couple of weeks after.” e fact that the swim forms part of the Animal Windfest event will, Lunt hopes, bring open water swimming into the consciousness

of yet more people. “Swimming in the UK’s rivers, lakes and sea has seen a large growth in popularity already over the last year and we hope joining forces with Windfest in a place like Poole will mean more people can come down and get involved. We’re particularly keen to get local people involved and offer them a safe, fun environment to give open water swimming a go.” e swim is the fifth event in the series, with a lake swim in Eton and river swims in Windsor and Hampton Court that took place from May through to July and one last river swim in Marlow to come in the next month. Around 10,000 people are expected to take to the water during the series, which includes a number of

distances from 750metres through to a full 10 kilometre ‘swimmers marathon’, depending on the venue. After feedback from the 2011 Speedo Open Water Swim Series participants, Human Race have decided to open up the non-wetsuit option to all swimmers across the whole 2012 Series. So if you are training for a channel crossing, or just want to immerse yourself in the full ‘open water swim experience’, this is the event for you. Vivian Artingstall from Hampshire will be doing just that as part of her team channel training and will be supporting the Speedo Open Water Series official charity, Cancer Research. “I am using the Spring Swim in Poole as part of my training for the Relay Channel

swim I will be completing next year with Seabrook Seals Ladies team.. GO SEALS! Another great reason to take on this swim is down to my mum. Recently she was struck with bowel cancer, but thanks to the care she received she is now on her way to recovery. is is my way of giving a bit back to the fantastic charity Cancer Research.” For more information on the Spring Swim, Poole Swim and the Speedo Open Water Swim Series in general visit www.openwaterswimseries.co.uk ■

n 2011, Walking With e Wounded set a World Record by taking four wounded servicemen to the Geographic North Pole. For May 2012, the charity has set its sights even higher: they will put five wounded servicemen on the summit of Mount Everest, 8,848 metres above sea level. Climbing Everest is one of the world's toughest challenges. To succeed, the climbers will have to overcome precipitous falls, hurricane force winds and treacherous snow-covered crevasses; their bodies will have to cope with chronic altitude sickness, immense fatigue and bitter cold. Few of the world's most experienced climbers actually reach the summit. As well as the challenges of the mountain, the Walking With e Wounded team must also deal with the injuries they received in the line of duty. Charity founder Ed Parker says, "Climbing Everest is one of the world's great challenges. It has long been a symbol of overcoming insurmountable obstacles against all the odds - convictions that are central to Walking With e Wounded's mission. ese servicemen physically embody those qualities, having overcome the very gravest of injuries already. ey are Taking Steps For A Better Future." Walking With e Wounded is supported by Prince Harry, who accompanied the North Pole team last year, and who returns as the Expedition Patron for 2012. Each member of the team has their own unique challenges to overcome, due to their injuries. Captain Martin Hewitt, who participated in the North Pole expedition, was injured in a firefight in Afghanistan. "My paralysed arm means that I naturally fall to my right side," he explains, "So balance is a major challenge. ... Walking across ladders placed above 300ft crevasses is one part of the expedition I'm certainly not looking forward to.' Each of the three teams will endure the arduous 10-day trek from Lukla in Eastern Nepal to Everest Base Camp, which stands at at 5,380m. From here, only the summit team will undertake the grueling process of acclimitisation to reach the summit. In total, the entire expedition will last for 6-7 gruelling weeks. Walking with the Wounded aims to raise over £2m to re-skill and re-train injured servicemen and women from the British Armed Forces. e charity aims to raise funds for education projects and training courses which specifically take in to account the physical and mental injuries sustained by servicemen and women.

Lord’s CRICKET'S FINEST

ord's has long been seen as the 'Home of Cricket' and the game's spiritual 'headquarters'. But its importance is not merely historical. In practice it remains, to this day, perhaps the most important single place in world cricket. Its owner, Marylebone Cricket Club, remains the guardian of both the Laws and the Spirit of Cricket, and MCC sides (which play around 500 games a year) perform a key role in promoting cricket - in Britain and elsewhere. In addition, Lord's is the home of Middlesex County Cricket Club www.middlesexccc.com and the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) www.ecb.co.uk , as well as the European Cricket Council (ECC) www.ecc.cricket.org. It is also the setting for the state-of-the-art MCC Indoor Cricket School www.lords.org/mcc/indoor-school, the unrivalled MCC Library and the world-famous MCC Museum www.lords.org/history/mcc-museum.Above all, Lord's is the setting for some of the best cricket in the world. It hosts npower Test matches and NatWest-sponsored one-day internationals plus most of Middlesex's home games, some historic fixtures (such as Oxford v Cambridge) and the village and club finals. ere is a Tour of Lord's where you will begin in the MCC Museum, home of the famous Ashes urn. e museum brings the fascinating story of cricket is to life. Paintings, photographs and artefacts, covering 400 years of cricket history, reveal the game's development from a rural pastime to a modern, increasingly international sport. e museum also boasts bats, balls and kit donated by great players like Mahela Jayawardene, Glenn McGrath, Rahul Dravid, Paul Collingwood and Shane Warne - as well as 50

S THE 2012 VIRGIN LONDON MARATHON

ince the first ever London Marathon on 29th March 1981, the race has grown in size, stature and popularity ever since. Now established among the major events in the sporting calendar, the London Marathon is shown on television in more that 150 countries around the world. As a fundraising event, there is no race in the world that comes close to the London Marathon. Runners in the 2011 Virgin London Marathon set yet another record figure for charity fund raising when they collected £51.8 million for good causes at last year’s race , confirming the London Marathon as the largest annual one-day fund raising event in the world. With a similar total expected from this year’s runners, the total raised over 30 years since the first race in 1981 will reach more than £500 million! An iconic image of the event is the thousands of runners traipsing the streets to raise money for charity, many in fancy dress, hoping to stand out as a rhino, football mascot, giant tree, or escaped convict. More than three quarters of competitors now run for a good cause and a third of all entry places are offered by charitable organisations. In addition, over the last three decades the London Marathon

David Weir and Amanda McGrory will defend their Virgin London Marathon titles against the strongest fields ever assembled for the elite wheelchair races. Weir is aiming to match the six London Marathon titles won by British Paralympic legend Dame Tanni Grey -ompson when he makes his 12th consecutive appearance in the race. Celebrities lined up to take part this year include: chefs Michel Roux, Gordon Ramsey, Tom Aiken and Tony Tobin, Will Young, DJ's Neil 'Doctor ' Fox, Mark Goodier and Charlie Hedges, Callum Best, Ben Fogle, Katie Price, Nadia Sawahla and EastEnders stars Danielle Harold and Neil McDermott. Some advice to those that wish to go along and support and cheer on the brave runners, many roads are closed on race day, so the best way to get around is using the London Underground, South Eastern and Docklands Light Railway (DLR), who lay on extra services especially. Remember, the trains will be busy all day – expect it to be like rush hour. You’ll probably have to queue at some stations and the tube lines may be forced to shut temporarily throughout the day to help ease the crowds. For more details go to www.virginlondonmarathon.com

survey by Superdrug has revealed that women spend an average of 330 days of their lives applying make-up and with a million stresses weighing us down, we want foundation formulas that are quick, easy to use and actually benefit our skin when applied. Foundation is for most women as much of their daily routine as brushing their teeth, so I’ve picked some of the best new foundations to ensure you can find your perfect match. BEST FOR DULL, UNEVEN SKIN ick, caked on foundation can often accentuate your flaws so today’s foundation formulas are more natural-looking, with flawless skin best achieved by using a ‘less is more’ method. HEALTH B EAUTY

Running ONE OF LIFE'S GREAT SIMPLICITIES IT'S EASY TO JUST BUY SOME RUNNING SHORTS AND TRAINERS, AND GET OUT OF THE DOOR WHENEVER YOU CAN. UNFORTUNATELY, THERE IS A LITTLE MORE TO IT THAN THAT! Running is one of the best forms of exercise, not only for getting fit but for weight control too. A 30-minute run, three to four times a week, trims your waistline, strengthens the cardiovascular system, improves muscle tone and definition, and installs a positive mental attitude. Running can also be a great social activity. Here is some essential running advice that you may need in the key areas of training, clothing, shoes and injury prevention. TRAINING STAGE ONE Make sure you warm up, stretch and cool down for every run. ● Don’t make the mistake of trying to do too much running too soon. Start off very gently and remember that if you cannot hold a conversation when you are running, you are pushing yourself too hard. 64

APRIL2012

Don’t worry about how hard you are running or whether you are doing enough, just get out and establish the routine first. After about a month of your training, your consistency should start to feel like a habit.

STAGE TWO At this point you might consider about involving a professional. Find a recommended personal trainer to progress your running training at the right rate for you. If you don’t belong to a gym then find a freelance trainer that will come out to your house. is doesn’t have to be incredibly expensive just a couple of visits and they will write you a plan and show you different running techniques. ● Set yourself a running goal! is will be great for your motivation. Beginners are advised to start off with a 5k race as their first goal. ● Alternatively, you could download a running training plan compiled by a professional coach to get you started.

HEALTH BEAUTY RUNNING SHOES Buying a pair of running shoes can be a daunting task. ere are hundreds of pairs on the market and unfortunately it’s not just a case of buying a pair that feel comfortable and look cool. Here are some top tips to help you get the right pair: ● Forget the colour of the running shoes. Prioritise with fit, function and feel. ● Don’t buy the running shoes your friends have always run in, they may not be right for you. ● Take advice from a knowledgeable expert. Only buy running shoes after you’ve tried them on. ● Keep your feet dry. Running-specific socks will help stop moist or sweaty feet from blistering. ● Gait analysis will show how you move. Use this to hone your footwear purchase, learn about where your technique can be more efficient, and understand what preventative maintenance is required to prevent injury. ● Footbed? is can be added to enhance the support that the shoe offers and help with knee, hip and back alignment when running. RUNNING CLOTHING As a new runner, the first words you should add to your running clothing vocabulary are ‘wick’ and ‘wicking’. is is how fabric deals with the moisture (i.e. the sweat) the body creates. A good piece of running clothing must transport moisture away from the body towards the outside environment, so even with intensive sweating you can feel comfortable and dry. e piece of clothing should also be able to regulate body temperature; this doesn’t mean it comes with a hot or cold switch that you can turn off and on at your leisure! You should try to layer your clothing so you’re able to adapt to the weather as it changes. NUTRITION FOR RUNNERS At first, you do not need to make radical changes to your diet. However, as your training increases, it will place additional nutritional demands on your body. You need to fuel your body with the right, nutritious and balanced diet to provide it with all the essential nutrients it requires to enable you to perform at your best. During running exercise the working muscles use stored energy, and the two main fuels the body has stored are carbohydrate and fat. e body’s reserves of carbohydrate (glycogen in the muscles) are limited, but the body’s reserves of fat are less limited. When you become tired it is usually to do with the depletion of the glycogen reserves in the muscles. Carbohydrate is the most important fuel for an active person, starting out running. It is stored in the muscles as glycogen. To maintain your energy stores you need to keep your glycogen stores topped up each day. e best way to do this is to have a low-fat, high-carbohydrate snack or light meal two to three hours before exercise, and then your stomach has time to empty before physical activity. Start refuelling your energy stores as soon as you have finished exercising - how much you need will depend on the length of time you have been exercising.

It is really important to drink before, during and after a run waiting until you are thirsty is not advisable, as you will be dehydrated by then. For most active people, selecting a wide variety of foods from each of the five major foods groups will ensure an adequate consumption of all the essential nutrients required by the body.

INJURY PREVENTION FOR RUNNERS Many people start running with the greatest of intentions, only to be struck down by injury a few weeks into their training regime. is is an unfortunate and unnecessary setback, which can be prevented or at least the risk reduced, by taking a few simple precautionary steps: ● Ensure you are running in the correct running shoes for your running style and bodyweight. ● Always carry out a thorough warm up before exercise, which should leave you slightly sweaty and your body prepared for the upcoming activity. ● Ensure correct and adequate stretching is incorporated into your training regime, including at least one session of stretching away from your running sessions. Avoid the temptation to run too far and too fast before your body is ready for it; overloading the tissues, can lead to injury. ● Seek advice with regards to your correct running posture and any muscle imbalances. It’s easier to prevent an injury than it is to treat one once it has occurred. ● is also means that you don’t have to take time out of your fitness regime to recover, and spares you all that pain! Be sensible, literally taking one step at a time. If you are aiming to race, start with a 5k, then you can progress to a 10 mile race, Half Marathon and if you are aiming for the top? WHY RUN THE VIRGIN LONDON MARATHON? e London Marathon has grown into one of the world's truly iconic races, whether running on behalf of a charity, or trying to beat a personal best, running the Virgin London Marathon is a sensational and life-changing experience. For many people, running a marathon is a lifetime ambition with months of hard training going into an immense 26.2 mile race. Offering wonderful scenery, supportive crowds, and even the possibility of appearing on national television, the Virgin London Marathon boasts the best possible backdrop to an inspiring and life-affirming event that will stay with runners forever. Each year the London Marathon creates thousands of inspiring charity stories, as runners in fancy dress costumes fight against the odds to complete the epic race and meet their fundraising promises. With large crowds cheering them on to glory, it can be an emotional experience for all. With its perfect combination of inspirational charity stories, inclusivity and ever-enthusiastic spectators, there has never been a better time to run the Virgin London Marathon. In offering a breathtaking experience for running beginners and professionals alike, the marathon certainly provides a day out that you won't want to forget in a hurry!

In recent years, designers have turned the spotlight on everything from pendants to the humble table lamp - and the effects are magical. While designers set the trend, it comes at a price. But these days the high street is quick to follow with affordable replicas so there's no need to feel left in the dark if your budget's tight. Follow the lighting lead of the Prime Minister's wife, Samantha Cameron, who recently paid only a couple of hundred pounds for a reproduction of a classic Arco floor lamp, shunning the £1,600 price tag for an original. "Samantha Cameron's not alone in choosing a reproduction of a classic," says David Gutfreund, managing director of Iconic Lights which sells the reproduction version. "Many interior 66

designers and architects specify reproduction products, particularly during the current challenging economic times. "Only people with more money than sense would pay as much as six times more for the same thing. I believe if the designer Castiglioni was alive today, he would approve of our reproduction, and find it hard to tell the difference." Here's my guide to the best designer buys and their money-saving equivalents on the high street. TAKE THE FLOOR Floor lamps languished in the shade for years, but they're enjoying huge popularity again

SOLAR POWER SAVES THE DAY

hen Mr Peters suddenly had his pension allowance cut he was tasked with finding a way to fill the financial void. After discovering that a close friend was generating both electricity and income from a solar photovoltaic panel system installed by Solar Fusion Mr Peters decided to enquire further. “I lost just over a £1000 a year in my state pension so I had to start thinking of ways I could recoup some of that money,” said Mr Peters. “A friend of ours had solar energy installed just over a year ago and he told us what kind of money he was recouping. He was very pleased at what solar power had done for him.” A consultant from Solar Fusion conducted a free-no-obligation survey of Mr and Mrs Peters’ three bedroom bungalow to find out if solar energy would be a feasible option for the property. “We contacted Solar Fusion and were visited by one of their consultants,” said Mr Peters. “We had a couple of quotations but we preferred the gent from Solar Fusion for many reasons.” Mrs Peters was initially sceptical as to the benefits of solar energy. “I just didn’t think that it was worth the risk of the initial outlay, but when you know someone that has had it for a year and has been receiving

68

the benefits, it makes the decision to look into it a bit deeper a lot easier,” she said. “Our friends had the proof that the system worked.” Solar Fusion oversees the installation of two types of solar panel system, one for generating hot water (thermal), the other electricity (photovoltaic). Following discussion a photovoltaic system was chosen by Mr and Mrs Peters and a date for the installation was agreed. “I was informed that on the day the installers would arrive between eight and nine, they actually arrived a few minutes early,” said Mr Peters. “All of the installers were very pleasant and got on with what they had to do and how they had to do it. One of the chaps also discussed with me where the best place on the roof for the panels was,” he added. A few hours later the installation was complete. “If the system can make a difference to the annual bills and keep you steady, so that you are swallowing up some of the price increases all of the time, then that has to be a good thing,” said Mrs Peters Solar Fusion is a Bournemouth-based company that specialises in providing solar energy systems for generating hot water and electricity. Established in 2004, Solar Fusion has grown to become one of the most knowledgeable and respected solar energy companies in the United Kingdom. “We pride

ourselves in not only the quality of our work but also the excellent customer service that we provide,” said managing director Michael Byrne.

In all but exceptional circumstances, new gas boilers have, by law, to be condensing ones. ey're the most energy efficient because they recover heat from the gasses that escape through the flue. ere are different types of condensing boiler, though. Traditional-style (system or open-vent) boilers store hot water in a cylinder (usually housed in the airing cupboard), while combi boilers heat the water on demand. With a combi, you save space and because the water is heated pretty much instantly, you don't have to plan ahead to get hot water. If, however, your household uses a lot of hot water and your home has multiple bathrooms, or it has low mains water pressure, a boiler with a cylinder may be more suitable. Your installer will be able to advise you. It's illegal for anyone other than an installer registered with Gas Safe Register to fit or work on a gas boiler. At www.gassaferegister.co.uk, you can check if an installer's registered and find registered installers in your area. It's obviously best to go with an installer who's been recommended to you, but failing that, ask for references or look for customer feedback online. Replacing a gas boiler usually costs between around £2,000 and £3,000, including the cost of the boiler itself. A registered installer will be able to ensure that their work complies with building regulations, as it must by law, and should provide you with a certificate when the new boiler is fitted, which you may need when you sell your home. All gas boilers should be serviced annually - with a new boiler, this may be necessary to extend the manufacturer's warranty. "Even if your boiler is not that old," says Bridges, "it is important that it has an annual inspection from a qualified engineer to make sure it is running at its most efficient."

SPEND AND SAVE G

et those jobs done with a little help from DIY guru Julia Gray. is week: how to reduce energy bills by having energy-efficient boilers at homes. Replacing your home's boiler can be an expensive and disruptive business, but if the boiler's old, it's well worth it. According to the Energy Saving Trust, swapping an old boiler for an A-rated condensing one - and upgrading the heating controls at the same time - could reduce your fuel bills by up to around £300 a year and will slash your home's CO2 emissions. "An ageing heating system of 15 years old or more may actually be wasting as much as 30p of every pound spent on heating your home or water," says Martyn Bridges of boiler manufacturer Worcester, Bosch Group. "Older boilers are also likely to have a standing pilot light, which could be costing in the region of £50-£60 per year."

For more tips and information, visit www.boileradvice.com PRODUCT OF THE WEEK I recently had a couple of awkward holes to fill in a wall and doorframe, and found Fix It Bonding Putty (£5.99, www.jmldirect.com) worked brilliantly for the job. You get two 60g tubes of putty in a packet (just cut off how much you need), plus a latex glove to wear while you knead the putty and mould it into shape. You have five to 10 minutes working time, one hour until it sets and 24 hours before it's fully set, then you can paint it and drill into it - it's as solid as a rock. It can be used on all kinds of materials, including wood, metal, glass, PVC and concrete, and can be put to all sorts of uses, such as plugging leaks, mending things and sticking missing tiles, so it's really useful around the home. HOW-TO TIP e Energy Saving Trust says that fitting a British Standard insulation jacket around your boiler's hot-water cylinder will save you around £40 a year and reduce heat loss by more than 75%, and yet the jacket should cost less than £10. To fit the jacket, remove it from the packaging and allow it to fluff out. When it has, tie one of the straps around the cylinder (towards the top) and slide one panel underneath and up to the top of the cylinder. Do this with all the panels and once they're roughly in place, thread the tops with the cord provided and tie it in place around the water pipe at the top of the cylinder. Ensure that the panels are evenly spaced and then secure the other straps, but don't over tighten them ■

HOUSE GARDEN THE OTTAWA DINING COLLLECTION Karim Rashid has designed a complete dining collection with BoConcept which will be available from 1 March 2012. From accessories such as cups and lamps to a dining table, chairs and sideboard, the collection offers a retrospective look over the formative years of Karim's design career, starting when he first studied design in Ottawa, Canada. In the past Karim has often been commissioned to design one piece of furniture in isolation e.g. a chair, so his collaboration with BoConcept is even more unique as the Danish company has worked with him to create an entire dining collection. Comments Karim; “Because BoConcept are experts in the living environment as a whole, I was commissioned to think about the entire dining experience - from the micro to the macro. As a result the creative process has been even more exciting than usual and the finished range is very diverse, from a cup to a table, to lighting and the floor. e Ottawa collection will enable people to reinvent their whole dining environment.”

March 2012. It is the result of a close collaboration between two global design brands, both of which started out in small Northern towns and share a love of beautiful design with high level functionality and accessibility. In short, the Ottawa collection reflects urban, contemporary living and is guaranteed to fly off the shelves. ALWAYS WANTED TO WORK WITH BOCONCEPT Karim and BoConcept are a worthy match, both have a strong global presence with Karim having worked in over 35 countries and BoConcept being available in more than 50 countries worldwide. Explains Karim; ’I have followed BoConcept since their first store opened in Paris in 1993 and it has always been a company I admired. It felt like divine intervention when I met them in Milan and we decided to embark on this project together. BoConcept makes quality, progressive designs and most importantly they make great furniture accessible through their global presence and competitive prices. Accessibility is really important to me as it enables more consumers to live with contemporary design’. THE ENHANCEMENT OF OUR LIVES e vision of creating furniture that simplifies and elevates our lives is a shared passion that is expressed in the new Ottawa collection where furnishings provide character and style yet remain functional and comfortable. e new Ottawa collection by Karim Rashid will bring a complete dining room set to BoConcept stores worldwide from 1

ome years ago I had a large oil-on-canvas portrait of a lady, obviously of noble background and, in her day – that is of the later 17century – of considerable beauty. It was a fine example of a typical set piece of time; she is holding, rather dramatically, a scantily clad child who clearly wants to play with a small dog, and all are within swathes of luxurious drapes. In a well-preserved condition and in its original carved wood and gilt frame, it was not long before it caught the eye of someone who recognises a good picture. A deal was struck and the picture was delivered and hung in a place just made for it. And so began one of those great friendships that grow from common interests, although this buyer had enjoyed a few more interests than I, and I thought mine were varied enough. e customer and later to become friend was Laszlo Grof, a beguiling Hungarian who arrived in England in 1956 and without any English found employment first as a cook and then as a steel worker in an iron foundry, then into the mine as an explosives expert. Next came a spell as a furniture maker for Messrs Gomme in High Wycombe working on their famous ‘G Plan’ range, before turning his hand to running his own chicken farm. Settling down to become a qualified accountant Laszlo then went to Oxford to receive a degree with honours in history and has just completed his 8th tour of Transylvania lecturing on his favourite subject, the history of cartography. In this field Laszlo is one of the leading authorities on ancient maps with a collection envied by museums and connoisseurs all over the world. In the field of music he is a keen jazz buff and has been in the audience on several occasions

remarked on two contemporary paintings hanging in the same room as the lady with the child and dog. ey had an instant appeal in the colourful and atmospheric representation of rural Hungary, full of light and shadows. Zoltan explained that the Impressionist movement had and still has an important influence in Hungary and a leading exponent is the artist Zoltan Grof – no relation – who painted the two I was admiring.

when I’ve been playing, both with a small group and with the Sticky Wicket Big Band Drum Spectacular which we put on at e Stables in Wavenden, the jazz Mecca established by the

late and much lamented John Dankworth and his still-singing wife the fabulous Cleo Lane. So time spent with Laszlo is never silent and while visiting him last year I noticed and

Zoltan’s technique of using enamel-oil, give his paintings the power of colour achieved by traditional oils, with the luminescence of light and shade created by the modern medium of lacenamel. Zolton developed his skills and love of the medium as a student. e impressionist traditions of the famous Hungarian Nagybanya School which was founded as an artist’s colony in 1896 by Simon Hollosy, was the spark from which Zoltan developed his passion and skills to produce the vibrant and atmospheric paintings. In 2001 Zoltan was commissioned to create 24 large scale pictures for UNESCO, each commemorating the cities, towns and villages given World UNESCO status. His paintings are in numerous private collections in Hungary and abroad. At the time of writing we are holding an exhibition of Zoltan’s work in the grand Bedford Room at Woburn Abbey, the first we hope of many. We all meet fascinating people from time to time but there can be few occupations like mine where you have the opportunity to learn just how fascinating they really are and how they act as catalysts for other people with varying talents in such disparate fields.

1. Pre-heat the oven to around 200 degrees centigrade, gas mark 6 2. Wine to match: Charles Van Wyk, sommelier of FJB Collection, says: “Pinot Noir is often regarded as the classic combination to complement a roast leg of lamb. e Pinot Noir grape makes a light bodied red wine which does not dominate the delicate flavours in lamb. With the Moroccan flavours in this dish, I would recommend a Pinot Noir from the Wairarapa region in New Zealand. is wine is slightly richer in style which is needed to stand up against the spicy rich flavours used in this recipe.” Available at most Oddbin stores at £12.00 Harbar Bistro at e Harbour Heights Hotel 01202 707272 www.harbourheights.com A proud member of the FJB Collection ■

their beautiful Sunday Lunch. Andy Jacob, Executive Chef for e Lamb as well as the other venues in the exclusive Van Hagen Leisure Group, talked us through preparing the meat for the rotisserie. Laid out on a butchers table in front of Andy was a whole choice lamb from the beautiful Herons Farm in Coggeshall, Essex. Andy prepares ‘the beast’ as he calls it, the day before it’s to be roasted. He begins by studding it first with a row of rosemary sprigs and then a row of garlic cloves. is pattern is repeated until the lamb looks like a piece of tasty contemporary art. Olive oil is then drizzled over the top and rubbed in expertly along with seasoning, fennel seeds and cracked black pepper. While Andy’s busy with the beast, the rest of the team are getting the grill ready. Chris Lambert, Head Chef, talks us through the grill itself “ We load up the ‘pit’ with charcoal and have to wait until it’s white hot before putting the meat on the spit, the lamb will then be seared over the white coals, the coals are then moved to the edges to allow the meat to cook on a lower heat. We will also make mounds of coals under the thickest parts of the lamb so that it cooks evenly all over.” Sous Chef Lloyd is putting whole bulbs of garlic, still in their skins, on the shelf of the charcoal grill. He explains: “We roast the garlic for 45-60 minutes until it’s really soft then we can squeeze it over the lamb as it’s on the spit giving it extra flavour.” Andy has been a chef for 36 years and lectured at the Bournemouth & Poole College for 10 years, that’s where he first met Head Chef Chris and also Sous Chef Lloyd when they were both his students. It’s easy to see that Andy

used to lecture, he really enjoys telling us all about how’s he’s preparing the lamb and why he’s doing what he’s doing. He explains how the charcoal grill gives the meat a very unique smoky flavour and makes it crispy. Andy is now scoring the sides of the lamb so that as it cooks, the fat is released and bastes the meat; he says that this is vital, not just when you’re preparing lamb but also when you prepare pork. Once the grill is at optimum roasting temperature the lamb goes on the spit and will stay there for two and a half hours before it’s ready, once cooked the meat needs to rest for 20-30 minutes to allow the juices to relax into the meat. I ask Andy how long it takes for a pub full of hungry customers to devour a lamb and unsurprisingly it doesn’t hang around for long “By 3pm it’s gone and as well as what’s on the spit we’ll also have beef sirloin, belly of pork and local fish on the menu.” Once all the happy customers have gone home Aaron the apprentice explains what happens to the carcass “We use it to make a stock for the next Sunday’s spit roast, the stock is used in the Rosemary jus that will accompany the lamb.” With such a huge amount of time and team effort going into each and every Sunday lunch at e Lamb it’s not surprising that this pub has become such a popular destination for the discerning, hungry diner. After a lovely spring walk in the New Forest, it’s the perfect place to stop, relax and partake in some tasty spring lamb. e Lamb 01425 672427 www.lambwinkton.co.uk ■

MEETING THE DEMAND ENNIO'S BOUTIQUE HOTEL EXPANDS

2012 is another busy year for Hampshire's largest independent hospitality group, Delicious Dining. Having spent the last 2 years concentrating on developing the ever popular Banana Wharf group and undertaking a complete refurbishment of their 250 seater venue Grand Cafe, attention has now turned to expanding their hotel portfolio. In 2009, group director

82

APRIL2012

Steve Hughes acquired the space above acclaimed restaurant Ennios, also part of the Delicious Dining Group, and sought to develop luxurious boutique accommodation on Southampton's historic waterfront. Opening just before the PSP Southampton Boat Show of the same year, Ennio's Boutique Hotel rooms were an immediate success with corporate and leisure

guests alike. Recognising a viable gap in the local hotel industry, Ennios always set out to provide a touch of individuality and luxury combined with exceptional hospitality and warmth. Now just two and half years on, the growing success and demand of Ennio's Boutique Hotel Rooms have led to the opening of 5 additional rooms scheduled for this Spring. Like their predecessors, much of the same design aspects will be incorporated into the new rooms, focusing on a sumptuous sleep experience in stylish surrounds. Each bedroom will again be individually designed with unique interior furnishings ensuring no one room will be the same. Recent research has proven that Southampton certainly has the demand for more accommodation facilities and the expansion of Ennio's Boutique Accommodation hopes to be a welcome addition to an already diverse hotel market. Since opening, Ennio's Boutique Accommodation has received an unprecedented volume of positive feedback. Reviews have highlighted that the operating partners direct involvement and hands on approach is a refreshing change and is both welcomed and appreciated by guests. Keen to retain this reputation, partner Chris Harrison commented 'guests refer to us as a hidden gem, many customers visit us for dinner from neighbouring hotels but once they experience our famous hospitality and passion for excellence they leave as a friend and always return'. Very welcoming - I wanted to stay a week not just for the 1 night! Beautifully appointed, a real boutique hotel with friendly, helpful staff, really impressed. Also the breakfast is a must! THIS BOUTIQUE HOTEL KNOWS WHAT IT'S ABOUT!

If you are staying over in Southampton in order to board a cruise ship, this exceptionally well-run boutique hotel is the ticket to get you off on the right foot. Our room was very clean and comfortable and its fine restaurant (breakfast and dinner) would have been worth a special trip. We felt we received excellent value for our money both in the hotel and in the restaurant and owner Harry's warm hospitality and direct involvement was a significant and appreciated bonus. We would certainly stay there again and give Ennios our highest recommendation. Prices start from £95 including breakfast, corporate rates are available on request. CAMP ROAD BEFORE

A CHANCE TO BUILD NEW HOMES IN A PRIME LOCATION PROTECTION FOR LAND OWNERS So, you’ve worked hard to achieve great results during your working life and amassed wealth in the form of a large home with a substantial garden. You always planned to sell part of the garden for a new home to be built, you might have flirted with the idea of building a new home there for yourself and selling the old one. It seemed a very safe bet, prices always rise and the land included in your primary residence was tax free, making this a perfect pension plan. WHAT CAN GO WRONG? Local Planning Authorities (LPA) round the UK are introducing a tax on the primary residence disguised as a Commuted Charge. Saying it is a contribution to the building of affordable homes each LPA is setting their own charges, without debate in Parliament so it is a free for all. And you, the prudent and hard grafting home owner, might be the victim of the tax when you sell

92

off your land for development. In some areas these charges are already in place. e Land Office, which specialises in selling land to developers and protecting the interest of the landowner, has seen a site which was worth £1.5M become the subject of a £1M tax liability which will result In the land owners retaining the land so that a contribution to affordable homes will never get paid. “e charge was simply too large to make selling the land viable. If the Local Planning Authority had charged £150,000 they might have got the contribution as the owners might have taken the hit” commented Lance Trendall from e Land Office. ACT NOW ese charges are still on the distant horizon for many areas, so it is better to act now before your home loses value to these charges, which can destroy your retirement plans. “It seems wrong that retired industry leaders and entrepreneurs have the potential to

maximise the value of their asset attacked in this way”. e Land Office helps home owners identify and maximise their development potential and negotiate on their behalf when the developers come knocking to buy land. “Developers make direct approaches to home owners, some offer a fair price but others do prey on the lack of experience of some home owners to buy land very cheaply. Our job is to level the playing field so the knowledge at the negotiating table is more evenly balanced so there is a genuine win:win deal agreed. e Land Office provides a free initial consultation service where land owners are invited to ring for a confidential discussion about their land. Site for sale in Ringwood One site on sale with e Land Office is a magnificent site of around 1.6 aces in a private road, where the owner will sell on a ‘subject to planning basis’. is allows the developer to apply for planning for what he’d like to build but at his own cost, only buying the land when he gets permission to build. e seller has no costs or risk, other than a commitment to sell when the developer gets planning. A time limit is set for the builder to go for planning, if this fails then the agreement ends. e Ringwood site enjoys an elevated position in a private road with views over distant farmland. e gardens slope down, past rhododendron bushes to a beautiful riverside lawn with daffodils right by the riverbank. e site includes fishing rights on this stretch of the Avon and the owner recalls his daughter catching trout for their supper at this spot. e site offers enough space for two luxury new homes to be built, subject to planning approval, so this could be perfect for a developer or for an individual wanting to build a dream home while selling the other for a profit. A buyer could go for planning for one much larger house, to create a massive home with a view and inspiring riverside setting.

PROPERTY RETURNS

APRIL2012

B

y the end of 2012, net lending to landlords exceeded net lending to owner-occupiers, according to the Council of Mortgage Lenders and the Bank of England. With the widely held perception that values have largely bottomed out, investors are once again looking to bricks and mortar to provide for their future. For anybody thinking of taking the plunge, there are two components to total returns – rental income and capital growth. Yields are often quoted ‘gross’, that is to say annualised headline rent divided by purchase price, but remember that annual running costs need to be subtracted and costs of purchase need to be added respectively. So be sure to factor in legal costs, valuation and mortgage fees, as well as service charges, ground rents, insurance and the like. Don’t forget management fees, compliance with legal requirements, and the possibility of voids between tenants. Factoring in all the costs produces the actual or ‘net’ return – a truer basis upon which to compare investment opportunities. e second component of total returns is capital growth. If a flat bought for £200,000 has risen £5,000 after 12 months that’s a useful 2.5% to add to the income return, but do remember that capital growth is no more than a warm fuzzy feeling until the

property is sold and the proceeds banked. Borrowing, or ‘gearing up’ to finance a buy-to-let can significantly improve returns. at £200,000 apartment let at £850pcm yields £10,200 per annum, which is a 5.1% return before costs, tax etc. Buy the same property using a £130,000 loan ( 65% Loan to Value) and the £70,000 balance in cash (‘equity’) and, after deducting interest on the loan of say 4.0% (£5,200 per annum) from the annual rent, the net income has fallen to £5,000. But divide £5,000 by £70,000, and the investor will discover that the return on equity invested has risen from 5.1% to 7.14%. If the £5,000 of capital growth is added, that’s a total return of 14.29% - which sounds great, but remember the income yield is tangible, whilst capital growth is not. If you feel a foray into buy-to-let is timely, then a sensible level of borrowing (and let’s face it, the banks won’t let us have any other!) is probably the way forward but be aware that if interest rates rise substantially, or capital values fall, the effect upon net returns will be more acutely felt the higher the level of borrowing, and do watch those bank margins - 0.5% base rates will not be with us forever!
