– We put fantastic local businesses and exciting events in the spotlight each month –
In June, the gardens at Hever Castle are transformed into a vibrant celebration of summer colour and scent, with dazzling displays throughout the grounds.
With over 5,000 roses blooming across the Rose Garden and Italian Garden, visitors are met with a visual and olfactory feast. Roses like ‘Timeless Cream’ and ‘Timeless Purple’ compete for attention beside climbing varieties such as ‘Rambling Rector’ and the deep red ‘American Pillar’, which spiral elegantly around stone columns. Floribundas like ‘Lucky’ and the golden ‘Absolutely Fabulous’ bloom in abundance, alongside striking favourites such as ‘Twice in a Blue Moon’, ‘Iceberg’, and the scarlet-red ‘Hever Rose’. Don’t miss
the newly planted ‘Lovestruck’ near Half Moon Pond, or the delicate charm of Rosa ‘Ballerina’ in the Tudor Garden.
In the Italian Garden, “Flaming June” is in full swing. Along the Pompeiian Wall, deep purple verbena, calibrachoa, salvias, begonias, and angelica create bold tapestries of bedding. Each garden room reveals a unique planting scheme, blending colour and texture in artful harmony, with romantic climbers like ‘New Dawn’ adding grace to the formal arches.
Along Pergola Walk, lush hostas and ferns flourish in the dappled shade, their foliage and pale lilac flower spikes drawing admiration. These prehistoric-looking plants contrast beautifully with the delicate fronds of ferns unfurling in the cool, grottoed pathway.
The Blue Corner provides a peaceful escape, where salvias and geraniums mingle with acers and rocky features to form a serene, photograph-worthy view of the Rose Garden framed by ancient arches.
Inspired by Gertrude Jekyll, the Long Border is a haven for pollinators, its colour progression from hot to cool hues showcasing peonies, scabiosa, alliums, and ‘Jacob’s Ladder’. Nearby, at Two Sisters’ Lawn, water lilies begin to bloom amid the dramatic foliage of Gunnera manicata.
Don’t miss the nostalgia rose bed near Festival Theatre, or the Emily Dickinson-inspired shrub rose border, perfect for a midsummer stroll at Hever in Bloom.
From 23 June to 6 July, the annual ‘Hever in Bloom’ event celebrates this peak season, offering garden tours, floral demonstrations, and spectacular displays inside the Castle – the perfect moment to witness Hever in full bloom.
The Sittingbourne & Kemsley Light Railway is celebrating Railway 200, along with most other railways in the UK, which is a year-long celebration of the start of modern railways 200 years ago, but the Railway is also celebrating 120 years of steam locomotion as steam locomotives ‘Premier’ and ‘Leader’ took over train operations from Sittingbourne Paper Mill’s horses.
Trains run every Sunday and Bank Holiday Monday until the end of September, with a number of special events planned throughout the season (see our ad). Trains will be hauled by steam locomotive ‘Premier’ (yes, the original loco) until ‘Melior’ returns to service later this year.
The Railway operates between Sittingbourne Viaduct station (in Sittingbourne Retail Park)
“We have completely rebuilt the platform at Sittingbourne Viaduct station and are step-free from the street to the train”
and Kemsley Down (within the active Kemsley Paper Mill), the journey takes 15 minutes and is unapologetically industrial as the train crosses the kilometre-long, century-old concrete Milton Regis Viaduct before passing through Milton Creek Country Park and Church Marshes. You can travel back on a later train if you’d like. We have completely rebuilt the platform at Sittingbourne Viaduct station and are stepfree from the street to the train. This £50,000 investment in the station has come from a number of funding sources from Swale Borough Council, Government, Councillors and our own member donations. Local business also helped with reduced prices and a fantastic donation of concrete parts for the new platform from Ibstock.
Kemsley Down station is our main base, here you will find the Footplate Café, museum, shop and museum walk. See the different types of wagons alongside museum walk, visit the wildlife garden or sit outside whilst the kids play on the ride-on toys. Both stations have accessible toilets.
Return fares are £9 for adults, £8 for senior citizens, £4.50 for children aged 3-15, under 3s go free. We have a family ticket for two adults and up to four children for £24. Single and rover fares are also available – see the website for details.

The Berkeley, perfectly nestled between bustling Knightsbridge and leafy Belgravia, has opened its legendary rooftop – usually reserved for staying guests – to all for summer 2025. The Berkeley Rooftop Bar & Pool introduces Capri in the City – a pop-up inspired by the island’s picturesque, covestudded coastline and its endless blue Mediterranean Sea views. Surrounded by lemon trees and unrivalled views of London’s skyline, Capri in the City celebrates Italy’s colourful, laid-back beach clubs with a brand-new Riviera-inspired menu of cocktails and dishes, offering Londoners the chance to live the dolce vita lifestyle in the capital.
In collaboration with Malfy Gin and devised by Bars Manager Marcello Cauda, The Berkeley serves up a series of new Capri-inspired cocktails, including the ‘Azzurro di Capri’, a take on the traditional gin and tonic using Malfy Con Limone, Italicus, blue Curaçao and Cedrata. For those hot summer nights poolside, the signature ‘Amalfi Gin Granita’ offers a revitalising mix of Malfy Con Limone, Amalfi lemon juice and sugar, complete with freshly shaved ice. Spritzes, craft beers and wines also feature, alongside the ultimate Italian

aperitif, Limoncello.
Capri in the City sees a pizza oven pop-up on the rooftop for the very first time, cooking a selection of pizzas tableside such as Lobster with marinated peppers and Parma ham with rocket and parmesan. Generous sharing platters also celebrate the best of Italian produce including baby tomato and basil bruschetta, Prosciutto and more, alongside small plates of marinated octopus and a classic Caprese salad. For a sweet treat, guests can indulge in a generous tiramisu for two – the ultimate Italian dessert – or Amalfi lemon sorbet served in a lemon, as it always should be, complete with a refreshing drop of Limoncello on the side.

In the rolling hills of the Kent countryside, where vineyards meet ancient woodland and wildflower meadows hum with life, Balfour Winery is doing more than producing award-winning wine; it’s giving back to the land that helps create it.
With every bottle of Nannette’s Rosé, a donation is made to the Kent Wildlife Trust. It’s a wine with a purpose. Supporting the protection of local habitats and the restoration of Wildflower meadows. These meadows provide a home for many species including bees, birds, and butterflies.
Delicate, dry and effortlessly elegant, Nannette’s Rosé is a celebration of the English countryside in both flavour and spirit. And now, it’s available at 25% off both online and from their Cellar Door Shop. Whether you’re sipping it on a summer evening or gifting it to a friend, every purchase helps fund vital conservation work through the Kent Wildlife Trust.
But to truly appreciate the story behind the bottle, there’s no substitute for visiting the
vineyard itself. Nestled on the Hush Heath Estate, just outside Staplehurst, Balfour Winery is open to visitors seven days a week. You can walk the nature trails, take in the wildflower meadows, and see firsthand the landscapes that this wine helps to protect. From the buzzing hedgerows to the carefully protected ancient woodlands, it’s a rare chance to taste English wine at its home and understand the passion behind every bottle.
As English wine continues to make its mark, Nannette’s Rosé offers something deeper: a connection to the land and a commitment to its future. Whether you buy online or make the trip to the vineyard, you’re not just choosing a bottle of wine; you’re supporting a vision of sustainable winemaking rooted in place and purpose. And with its soft blush, fresh red berry notes and a cause worth toasting, Nannette’s is a wine that tastes as good as the good it does.

With the relaunch of Fish Union firmly bedded in, the buzz around Chislehurst’s standout restaurant shows no signs of slowing. In just a few short months, this chef-led seafood destination has not only delivered on its promise—it’s surpassed expectations.
Richard Kirkwood and Andy Roberts, both alumni of renowned London institutions like J-Sheekey’s and Wright Brothers, bring a quiet confidence to everything they do. Their experience is felt throughout the menu, where precision, balance, and creativity define every dish. This is cooking with purpose—ingredientled, technically sharp, and always evolving.
The restaurant itself, transformed by local designers Guthrie & Kirkwood and brought to life by Saunters, is stylish without being overworked, striking a modern tone that’s equally suited to date nights, family lunches, or spontaneous drinks at the bar.
The bar has become a welcome addition, offering well-crafted cocktails and a newly expanded wine list. The surprise standout? A bold and juicy Agiorgitiko from Greece—proof that even a seafood-focused menu has room for a confident red.
Looking ahead, Fish Union is planning a series of events for the autumn—keep an eye on www. fishunion.co.uk, where details will be published in the coming weeks.
Open Tuesday to Saturday from 12pm to 9pm and Sunday from 12pm to 5pm, Fish Union is definitely worth a visit.

Last month on a cold February day I visited
The Cornflour Café, located within one of our regular horticultural contributors, Coblands Garden Centre to try out their new menu. The cornflour Café has always been a favourite pit stop of mine as in addition to offering great food and refreshments, the free parking is always ample well and although popular, its spaciousness means you can always get a table in my experience.
The Cornflour Cafe which is open 7 days a week, provides a pleasantly tranquil spot to unwind. You can either choose to dine in the café itself or amidst the plants and flowers of the glasshouse and includes a dedicated area for furry friends to rest after a countryside stroll.
The menu is made of a combination of hearty traditional British dishes, including a full English breakfast, which I’ve enjoyed here before and can vouch for the top quality sausages and other ingredients, Fish Pie and Cottage pie, as well as a selection of Seasonal soups, freshly filled baguettes and an extensive selection of topped jacket potatoes, with fillings ranging from beans and cheese through to pulled pork and crispy onions.
In light of the brisk temperature outside, I started with the soup of the day, which was vegetable. This was nicely balanced with a good amount of flavour from the vegetables, with a hint of sweetness from the carrots and was served with a generous amount of thick wholemeal bread. For my main, I had the cottage pie which was well made, with a rich comforting prominent beef flavour from the filling, balanced well by the creamy mashed potato topping, and subtle hints of carrots and onions.
The Cornflour Cafe also serves afternoon tea with clotted cream and scones and a selection of sumptuous cakes. I went for the rich, nutty bittersweet, coffee and walnut cake which was delicious and generously portioned.

Overall, I was delighted as with previous visits with the Cornflour Café at Coblands and would highly recommend for a visit if you haven’t already.

Who do premier footballers, and design-conscious homeowners call when they need a house renovation? Meet Sanel
Konyar, founder and creative director of Interior Kollection—a bespoke interior design service and online store, priding itself on creating innovative and unique home redesigns and renovations. Launched in 2011, Sanel headed up numerous prestigious projects before branching out on her own. Warm and friendly, with a beautiful smile, Konyar welcomes me to her stunning South London showroom. The aesthetic is beautiful, adorned with stylish homewares. I immediately want everything. I’m shown around her sleek workspace before she enthusiastically talks me through the website. Not long after Sanel launched her interior design business, her clients began asking her to sell more of the products she brought to style their homes. “I’ve always been passionate about sourcing unique products,” says Sanel. Today, the online Interior Kollection store is an integral part of her interior design business.
Interior Kollection houses a portfolio of luxury residential and commercial projects both in the UK and worldwide. Exceptional attention to detail and an unmatched finish make this design firm the perfect choice to transform your home. The results speak for themselves, backed up by her clients’ delighted testimonials. “The client is the most important part of my business,” says Sanel. “Their satisfaction is a priority,” she explains. “I build the relationship along the way; we work very closely together,” she continues. “My comprehensive experience and the knowledge I’ve gained from many years in the business are what I can offer.” Her portfolio includes invaluable expertise gained across several projects in some of London’s
most iconic locations—from the refined elegance of Mayfair and Knightsbridge to the historic grandeur of The Lancasters in Hyde Park, and the timeless beauty of Kensington’s Phillimore Gardens. Each project reflects her ability to adapt to the unique character of every space.
As a qualified interior designer, Sanel believes it is essential to have a strong foundation in interior architecture. “Understanding the building structure, flow, and technical aspects of a space allows you to not only design with purpose, but also to communicate clearly with contractors,” she explains. “It’s about knowing what you’re designing, how realistic and achievable it is—and where you can push boundaries.” This technical grounding, she believes, actually enhances creativity rather than restricting it. “When you know how things work, you can play more freely within those parameters and create something truly unique.”
Each project is personally tailored to her client’s brief; blending practicality, comfort, and a
feeling of lived-in luxury. With a passion for design—however small or big the project may be—Interior Kollection offers a bespoke service from start to finish. Interior Kollection specialises in property renovation, space planning, along with full project management and a tailor-made interior styling service. Their aim is to bring a client’s vision to life. “We focus on timeless, contemporary, and functional design,” says Sanel. “ At Interior Kollection, our focus is to help our clients materialise their dream home,” she continues, as an expert in her field. “With my experience, I can guide and advise on the most effective solutions,” she adds. “I love what I do. Designing beautiful homes is not just my work—it’s my passion.”
Why choose an interior designer?
An interior designer will help guide you in your design decisions. They can save you time and money that, without experience, you may lose. This is a longterm investment; it’s important to get it right.
“Sanel designed and renovated my home in the UK. The process was seamless and she went above and beyond at every stage. The service was impeccable. Her attention to detail, clear communication, and creative vision transformed our home into a space that is both beautiful and functional. We highly recommend her.”
How to choose the right interior designer for you?
Review their portfolio. If you’re considering a full home renovation, check whether they’ve handled similar projects—particularly key areas like kitchens and bathrooms. Browse their website and social media, and read reviews and testimonials. Look for consistency in client satisfaction and reliability.
What trends are shaping interior design currently?
Interior design is embracing clean lines, and uncluttered layouts, softened with rich textures, and cosy layers. Organic shapes and natural materials like wood and stone are paired with curved forms to create spaces, that feel both modern and grounded.
What are the benefits and value of hiring an interior designer?
A skilled designer blends function with flair, ensuring your space is not only beautiful but also practical, comfortable, and tailored to you. Their trained eye ensures the right layout, to selecting finishes, that are as durable as they are stylish, and ensuring cohesion. Clever design can enhance your day-to-day life, and even increase your home’s value.

Natalie says, ‘We can make suggestions, and we also provide teeth cleaning with Emmi Pet, the gentlest and most effective dog toothbrush with ultrasound.
‘A free consultation can be booked for us to check the condition of the teeth and also that the dog will allow us to do it! A first appointment is 45 minutes and includes a free toothbrush head. Farringtons is a truly remarkable school, one steeped in history and tradition, but forward thinking in its approach. Come and find out what makes us special.
In a world where education can often feel impersonal, Bishop Challoner School offers something refreshingly different: a nurturing environment where every child is known by name, and every voice is heard.
Our school may be small in size, but it is mighty in heart. The strength of our community lies in the close relationships we foster - between pupils, staff, and families. Here, no one is ever just a number. Our smaller class sizes ensure personalised attention, tailored teaching, and the opportunity for every child to thrive at their own pace. It’s an approach that not only raises academic achievement but also nurtures confidence and character.
Visitors often remark on the warm, family feel that defines life at Bishop Challoner. That sense of belonging begins the moment a pupil joins us and is felt throughout their journey, from Nursery to Sixth Form. Teachers act not just as educators, but as mentors and role models - guiding students through both challenges and triumphs with care and consistency.
This culture of connection extends beyond the classroom. Whether it’s on the sports field, in a school production, or during one of our many enrichment activities, students of all ages support one another. Older pupils take pride in mentoring younger ones, and collaborative learning is encouraged at every level.
Parents, too, are vital members of the Bishop Challoner family. We believe in open communication, partnership, and shared values. Many of our families describe the school as a “second home” - a safe, stimulating place where their children feel valued and supported.
Our community doesn’t just teach - it empowers. It builds resilience, sparks curiosity, and celebrates individuality. At a time when bigger can often mean less personal, Bishop Challoner proves that small really can be powerful. Our community is our strength, and it’s what sets us apart.
We invite you to come and experience it for yourself.

Established in 1984, RIC is a place for individuals and a successfully distinctive alternative to traditional schools.
ARochester Independent College education is grounded in our mission to support students to find their own direction and help them open doors to great universities. We focus on the highest levels of academic success while retaining a creative buzz. RIC is a small school with a personalised approach that has a huge impact on student achievement and self-esteem. Atmospherically relaxed, there’s an emphasis on exam success without unnecessary pressure. It’s a natural stepping-stone between school and university.
RIC students, described by The Good Schools Guide as a “strikingly nice bunch,” voice their opinions and think critically, creatively and independently. The average class size is 8. The mutual respect between teachers and students is palpable. They leave us not only with results that exceed expectations but with empathy and optimism, fluency of thinking, enthusiasm for the future and confidence about themselves and their education. Our top university destination in the last five years is UAL with 28 placements followed by UCL with 20 placements.
The first thing you’ll notice when you visit RIC is that our home is a one-of-a-kind urban campus at the heart of a designated conservation area. It’s a mustsee for prospective families. The historic site, with listed buildings linked by award winning wildlife gardens, has a uniquely warm sense of place in which our diverse community of 425 students and 100 staff study and work. We are home to 180 weekly and full
boarders who all live on site. Our campus is designed for forging friendships, creating community and opening up educational opportunities rooted in the natural world. It’s the backdrop for an atmosphere that’s a bit more university or liberal arts college than school: small class sizes; first-name terms with teachers; a campus spirit. Nip through one of our passageways and you’ll find quirk and character, green space and quiet corners.
As we celebrate the fortieth anniversary of the College in 2024-5 we’re committed to maintaining focus on what makes the special alchemy of RIC culture work: an aspirational, informal and creative environment, a commonsensical flexibility of approach and a focus on the individual needs of every student who comes to us.
We look forward to showing you our school.

Nestled within 150 acres of historic Kent countryside, just 30 minutes from central London, Cobham Hall School is boldly embracing a new era. Once a pioneering school for girls, it is now transitioning to full co-education, welcoming boys into all year groups from September 2025 - a defining moment in its long and impressive history.
Leading this transition is Brian, the first boy to join Cobham Hall’s Lower School ahead of the full co-educational intake. Now in Year 9, Brian has quickly embraced the School’s values and spirit. He describes Cobham as “a great school with lots of opportunities,” adding, “Being one of the first boys is something special. I’ve been welcomed, supported and part of something unique.” His experience reflects the warmth and inclusivity of Cobham’s close-knit community.
Cobham Hall’s small size is a significant strength, enabling tailored learning, individual support and a culture where every student’s voice is heard. This nurturing environment ensures all pupils are known, valued and encouraged to thrive. Its long-standing membership of Round Square Network of Schoolsand hosting of 30 global Heads this year - showcases
its outward-facing, global vision.
Creativity is at the heart of Cobham’s ethos. Year 12 Steinway Scholar Exyn has transformed her early love of piano into an inspiring journey, winning competitions and mentoring younger musicians.
Fellow Year 12 Art Scholar Bond explores themes of power and identity through powerful oil paintings that challenge conventions and spark conversation. Their achievements are supported by outstanding staff, including the Head of Art, who recently received a Pearson Teaching Award Certificate of Excellence for his exceptional contributions.
As Cobham Hall embraces full co-education, it remains deeply committed to diversity, inclusivity and outstanding pastoral care. Year 13 student Ruk perfectly captures the School’s spirit: “Cobham is where dreams take flight, knowledge finds a home and friendships last a lifetime.”
Guided by its motto - There is more in you than you think - Cobham Hall continues to inspire students across academics, arts and beyond. As it confidently steps into its co-educational future, the School is not merely adapting - it is shaping an extraordinary, inclusive vision of independent education.

Education is constantly evolving, and schools must be able to adjust to new trends, technologies, and societal shifts. Five years on from the start of the pandemic, families’ work schedules, home locations, and personal circumstances have evolved: people in 2025 simply manage their time differently. By offering a range of provisions, schools can ensure that education remains accessible, effective and future-ready, that parental choice can be met, and that every pupil is able to find an environment in which they can thrive.
Long recognised as one of the world’s finest boarding schools, The King’s School Canterbury is embracing this changing world and helping parents better balance their commitments with the introduction of flexi-boarding, the expansion of day provision, and the launch of a new school bus network this Autumn.
A fourth, new Day House will open at King’s in September, providing all the benefits of boarding (access to extracurricular activities, sports, and time with friends) while giving day pupils the opportunity of returning home to their families in the evening.
The introduction of flexi boarding will enhance this provision by offering these pupils the choice of boarding on specific nights of the week or during certain periods of the school term: a great middle-ground for families with irregular schedules or those who travel often.
To further support families, ease logistical challenges for parents, and widen accessibility, a new school bus network is also being launched for the first time to serve local areas.
Offering versatility in provision helps King’s families to choose the environment that best suits their individual needs, and ensures that every child feels uniquely supported, both academically and emotionally.

Sevenoaks Leisure Centre is helping young people kick-start their fitness journey with its Junior Gym Memberships, designed for 11 to 15-year-olds.
Managed by Everyone Active, the initiative aims to provide a safe, structured and engaging environment for children to develop lifelong healthy habits.
James Arnold, Fitness Manager at Sevenoaks & Edenbridge Leisure Centres, said: “Our junior gym is one of the most important services we offer. The fitness industry moves at a fast pace and younger children are seeing more and more fitness content online. This makes it imperative that our young members have a safe and informative place to exercise. Our friendly, knowledgeable team can supervise, guide and help them through the early part of their fitness journey.”
To ensure safety and proper use, junior members have access to a wide range of gym equipment specifically suited for their age group.
This includes cardio machines such as treadmills, rowing machines, and cross trainers, as well as resistance bands, core bags, and dumbbells up to
5kg. Functional training tools like BOSU balls, medicine balls, and battle ropes are also available. Supervised sessions ensure that juniors can use the equipment effectively while building strength, endurance, and confidence in a safe environment.
Joanne Simons 15-year-old son is a junior gym member said: “My son Alex has been a member of the gym now for just over a year and in that time, I have really seen his overall health improve. He has become so much more active, and his confidence has increased. He now attends the gym at least 3 times a week and has started to build up his strength with using heavier weights which he seems to really enjoy. Overall, Alex very much enjoys attending the gym and keeping active is a big part of his life. Alex has also mentioned how polite and helpful all the staff are in the gym and if he has any questions, they will offer support and advice.”
The Junior gym memberships are available at Sevenoaks Leisure Centre, Edenbridge Leisure Centre and White Oak Leisure Centre and starts at £24.99.

To make a lifetime commitment is no easy feat. Neither, it seems, is choosing an engagement ring- until we found KATA Jewellery.
All I hoped for was the perfect ring for my perfect girl. I needed something that felt like a symbol of taking the next monumental step in our lives together. Searching jewellery stores high and low in search of the perfect piece could not be more difficult when it comes to making such a big decision.
After a while, everything started looking the same. A lot of the engagement rings today seem to be rather similar. However - jewellery is, and will always be, incredibly individual. I felt defeated - none of them could sum up our relationship. But when I first stepped into KATA Jewellery, something felt different –I knew I was in the right place.
both Freemen of the Goldsmiths Company and members of the Guild of Master Craftsmen – which is no easy feat. It shows in their ability to guide you through the design process, working through your personal preferences, recreating your love story in a completely bespoke way – as well as encouraging you to think outside the box.
I tried hard not to be distracted by the many shiny things in their cabinets, especially their Juno collection – a series of earrings with interchangeable ear pendants. It definitely gave me ideas for her next birthday gift. In the end, I was able to walk away with something that felt perfect. Our relationship isn’t “off the shelf”, and neither should our engagement ring be. Each item they offer is wearable art, reflecting the person who wears it.
KATA Jewellery has been something of an inside secret to the locals of St Johns, ever since they opened the doors to their Tunbridge Wells Branch in 2022. Offering one-on-one bespoke design services, KATA works with you to create a one-of-a-kind piece using recycled or Fairmined gold and handselected gemstones. The perfect fit you have been searching for but never been able to find is just one consultation away.
The amount of knowledge and craftsmanship that is poured into their work is testament to years of training and skill. Jennifer and Anton Kata are

As the warmer weeks set in, we reflect on the importance of keeping hydrated at any age, and in particular as we grow older.
We’ve all been there: suddenly our mouth is dry and we can’t remember when we last had a sip of water.
While it’s easy to ignore our fluid intake, dehydration is associated with issues including reduced mental performance, fatigue and constipation. At its most severe, it increases the chances of hospitalisation and even mortality.
On the flipside, the benefits of good hydration are many and broad. It improves well-being and, in some instances, it may help us reduce medication and even prevent illness.
Because of physiological changes in the ageing process and certain conditions more prevalent as
we age, older people can be more vulnerable to dehydration. This summer, we encourage you to:
• Watch out for the signs – including dryness of the mouth, lips and tongue. Urine is also a giveaway – strong colour and smell can mean more fluid is needed. As we age, it’s common to reduce drinking in the hopes of avoiding needing to go to the toilet, however restricting overall fluid intake does not reduce the frequency or severity of urinary incontinence.
• Think beyond water – adding a slice of lemon or fresh strawberries can make water more appealing and, if appropriate, consider squash, milkshakes or iced tea; and load up on fruit and veg like watermelon and cucumber.
• Create routines – for example, keep a jug of fresh water or squash next to you while watching your favourite TV show, and use the commercial breaks to remind you it’s time for a refill.
Having supported hundreds of families, I know that recognising when an older loved one is not drinking enough, and helping them to drink more can be a challenge, but paying closer attention is always a good start.
Keep well this summer and if you ever want to explore your support options, contact myself or your local Greensleeves Care home for a noobligation call or visit.

In later life, what matters most is retaining those things we hold dear – independence, comfort, curiosity and those all-important connections with the ones we love.
KYN is changing the way lives can be enjoyed in later years. KYN takes a holistic approach to care, combining highly experienced nursing staff with a nurturing environment to create a space where residents can thrive and develop meaningful relationships.
KYN Bickley, the first of KYN’s care homes, opened just over two years ago here in Kent in a spacious neo-classical building with a garden in Bromley, Greater London. It was followed by KYN Hurlingham in June last year, opposite The Hurlingham Club in Fulham.
Respecting each resident as a unique individual, the KYN team takes the time to understand resident’s previous professional and familial roles, as well as who they are today. The team create a bespoke care plan and support each resident’s wellbeing while offering the independence and freedom they deserve.
KYN cultivates a feeling of ‘homeliness’ through elegant and cosy spaces designed by interior designer Nina Campbell. Social areas feature inspiring artwork and warm colours, while bedrooms come complete with large ensuite wet rooms and bespoke, comfortable furnishings, which residents are invited to enhance with personal touches. Meanwhile, serene gardens are designed to improve mood, cognition and general wellbeing.
“The team create a bespoke care plan and support each resident’s wellbeing while offering the independence and freedom they deserve”
Dining is central to the wellbeing of residents at KYN, with creative menus by executive chef Tristan Welch advised by expert clinical nutritionist Eva Humphries ensuring residents enjoy healthy, delicious food.
From gardening to literature appreciation and current affairs clubs, as well as trips in the KYN taxi, residents are encouraged to enjoy their autonomy, embrace their interests and build friendships. They decide how they spend their days, whether that’s enjoying the arts programme or soaking up time in nature.

Radfield Home Care Bromley, Orpington & Beckenham has introduced an innovative new service to help older people across Bromley stay safe and well at home for longer. Thanks to the introduction of the cutting-edge Whzan Blue Box system, clients now benefit from regular medical monitoring, delivered free of charge alongside their personalised care.
The Whzan Blue Box is a small, discreet piece of technology that allows trained Care Professionals to check key health indicators such as blood pressure, oxygen levels and temperature, all from the comfort of a client’s own home. This advanced monitoring can detect early signs of illness or changes in wellbeing that might otherwise go unnoticed, helping to prevent serious health issues before they develop.
By identifying potential problems sooner, Radfield’s Care Professionals are able to alert healthcare teams and family members quickly, supporting early medical intervention and helping to avoid unnecessary hospital admissions. The system also automatically calculates the NHS National Early Warning Score 2 (NEWS2), a key tool used by healthcare professionals to monitor patients at risk of deterioration.
Simi Ghuman, director of Radfield Home Care
Bromley, Orpington & Beckenham said:
“Our goal has always been to help people stay living safely at home for as long as possible.
“The introduction of the Whzan Blue Box allows us to offer an extra level of reassurance to our clients and their families, at no extra cost.”
Alongside their core care services, Radfield Home Care Bromley also runs a free monthly Connections Café at Community House Bromley, delivered in partnership with Quest Soul Theatre C.I.C., offering older adults the chance to enjoy creative activities and build new friendships.

Last month pop icon Rihanna showed off her baby bump after her third pregnancy was announced on a star-studded Met Gala blue carpet. By Jessica Coates
The singer and make-up mogul, who revealed her second pregnancy during the 2023 Super Bowl half-time show, was seen rushing into a New York hotel hours before the gala, while her partner ASAP Rocky made his entrance at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
The couple, who already share two children, added another headline moment when Rocky, also a 2025 Met Gala co-chair, arrived holding a diamond-studded umbrella and wearing a custom look by AWGE, his own creative agency.
“It feels amazing, you know. It’s time that we show the people what we was cooking up,” he said. “And I’m glad everybody’s happy for us ’cause we definitely happy.”
Rihanna, a Met Gala regular who arrived later, opted for a Marc Jacobs dress which highlighted her growing baby bump with a boned corseted bodice and cropped suit jacket.
The ensemble was completed with an oversized hat and maroon polka-dotted necktie.
The Met Gala, known as fashion’s biggest night, is held on the first Monday in May and celebrates the opening of the Costume Institute’s spring exhibition at the New York museum.
This year’s theme, Superfine: Tailoring Black Style, casts an eye back over 300 years of Black fashion, the concept of black dandyism and its lasting impact on contemporary style.
– Everything you need to create the perfect home this Summer –
Whether you’re envisioning a sophisticated home office, a private wellness sanctuary, or an elegant room for entertaining guests in style, your garden holds extraordinary potential. At Crane, we know that the most exceptional garden buildings aren’t just architecturally stunning, they’re meticulously designed around how you truly want to live. We caught up with Archie Bathgate, one of our principal Building Designers, to explore the incredible variety of ways homeowners are transforming their outdoor spaces into vibrant, multi-functional spaces.
What are the key trends in the outdoor room market right now?
People are buying garden buildings for a diverse range of uses at the moment. Bespoke home offices are in demand still – customers want inspiring workspaces with great garden views that elevate their daily productivity. We’re also crafting wellness spaces, from fully equipped private gyms to tranquil yoga and meditation studios. Garden bars continue to prove a popular choice for those looking to create an entertainment hub at home.
“At Crane, we know that the most exceptional garden buildings aren’t just architecturally stunning, they’re meticulously designed around how you truly want to live”
What styles are customers gravitating towards? The answer there lies in the incredible range we offer. We craft everything from quintessentially English summerhouses with charming gabled roofs and decorative detailing, to ultra-contemporary studios with floor-to-ceiling windows and clean lines. Some customers like the timeless appeal of a traditional potting shed reimagined with luxury finishes, while others are drawn to slick, minimalist office pods that feel like architectural sculptures in the garden, while still fulfilling a vital function.
How do customers choose the right building?
Well, while there is a lot of choice, my colleagues and I are here to offer guidance. The first question we’ll ask is, “What would you like to use your building for?” That will always set us off in the right direction. Ultimately, it will come down to how much they want to spend, and what style the customer is after. We have many beautiful garden room and summerhouse designs, but there is a distinct style to each of them, and it depends whether the customer prefers more of a traditional style or modern. We can then really hone in on the finer details that will firm up their choice, such as roofing, interior options, and paint colours.
What paint colours are trending at the moment?
Ooh, good question. It really depends on the aesthetic customers are going for – do they want their building to blend in or stand out in the garden, and to be honest I would say there’s a pretty 50/50 split across our range. Neutral greens and creams/ beiges, such as Sage or Sandstone from our Crane Exterior range are very popular. However, for a bolder statement, our customers really love Black on a shed or a greenhouse, it adds a modern twist to a building that is normally quite traditional. Of course, the studios are very popular in dark greys like Slate or Anthracite from the Crane Exterior range, or Down Pipe from Farrow & Ball’s range.
How do you approach such varied requirements?
Each request presents us with unique design opportunities. For example, a home office demands exceptional natural light and year-round comfort, so we incorporate large windows which infuse the area with plenty of sunlight. For wellness spaces, we consider comfortable spaces that truly energise. Rooms used for entertaining friends and family quite often feature integrated technology and elements which bring the outdoors in, creating a tranquil and natural atmosphere.
Do customers often desire multi-functional spaces? Oh, definitely! That’s where our garden buildings truly excel. Whether you want a space that is all in one room, but with the ability to use it as a serene morning meditation studio, a focused daytime office, as well as an evening retreat, we can absolutely help you with those design elements. But equally, partitions work wonders if you’ve got the space for a larger building - we’ve created many his and hers workspaces, workshop and storage combinations, or even a library in one half and a gym in the other, with the ability to walk between the two.
What’s most fulfilling about these projects?
I enjoy seeing how we can enhance someone’s lifestyle. Whether it’s finally achieving that dedicated creative workspace, providing them with a workout room that they’re excited to use, or creating the gathering place where friends and family want to spend time together – these buildings genuinely elevate how people live.
Explore their show sites at Coolings Lifestyle, Sevenoaks, or Notcutts Garden Centre, Tunbridge Wells, or visit them online at www.cranegardenbuildings.co.uk to gain further inspiration and see their beautiful garden buildings.

There really are no rules about which rooms are best suited to a light or dark aesthetic. Bedrooms don’t have to be dark and cosy to be calm, kitchens don’t have to be light and bright to be functional. The choice comes down to personality, lifestyle and the atmosphere you want to create.
Light and bright
Openness, airiness and natural light give a feeling of space, freshness and order. Cabinetry and furniture play a major role in setting the tone, not just through colour but in material, finish, and texture.
Dark and cosy
Rich, deep tones are enveloping, calm and restful. Dark and cosy spaces can feel like a warm hug.

Combining styles
It’s possible to successfully blend the two aesthetics in a single room. Set against a light backdrop, natural timber features, cabinetry in rich wood – walnut, oak, or dark-stained, or a deep painted finish, create the perfect balance of light and dark. Ultimately, there’s no right or wrong; let your home reflect your mood, lifestyle and personality. After all, the best interiors are the ones that make you feel most at home.

Furniture is working as hard as ever to earn a spot in the home, and now as well as being beautiful to behold and delightful to use, clever, contemporary designs are evolving that have multiple high-tech functions that transform a room or smaller space into something completely different in mere moments.
It’s one step further than modularity, which can be created to be perfectly adapted to a space and remain adaptable for another set-up when you feel like having a change-over day, but what we’re seeing now is modern multi-use furniture that hides in plain sight, converting in 3-2-1 into something new and unexpected.
Our innovative, space-saving transformable
“Transform
a room or smaller space into something completely different”
“Our innovative, space-saving transformable furniture systems seamlessly spread spatial efficiency across living, working and sleeping”
furniture systems seamlessly spread spatial efficiency across living, working and sleeping areas without compromising on the all-important aesthetics. Each design is minimalist and under the radar, from fold-into-the-wall Murphy beds to sofas that morph into bunk beds to desks that convert into dining tables, home offices hidden in storage units and room dividers that appear as if from nowhere.
Non-specialist designer furniture brands have also answered the call, with a bevy of furniture that isn’t quite what it seems emerging. Take De Sede’s DS-266 Yoga Lounge Chair. Think it’s simply a lounge-y armchair? Then try playing with the backrest, and arrange it into multiple positions that span almost supine to sitting straight and supported. Is that a piece of minimalist wall art? Nope, it’s Ligne Roset’s Nubo Desk which hangs fully disguised before revealing itself as a practical workplace. Lighting traditionally has one task.
Furniture is no longer just about form and function – it’s about transformation. With hightech adaptability and hidden versatility, today’s designs seamlessly shift to meet the ever-changing needs of modern living, looking completely unassuming as they do so, meaning spaces can truly have dual roles. chaplins.co.uk
There is much more to the contemporary conservatory extension than is commonly thought—offering scope for big changes in how you can enjoy your home.
Conservatories have bloomed in recent years to rival their flashier and expensive cousins, the single-storey extensions. Advances in design and technology mean that more adventurous spaces are possible with many of the contemporary features people look for in extensions, such as wide expanses of glass and bi-fold doors. Yet the relative simplicity of construction, lower cost and less likelihood to need planning permission together mean it’s a good time to look again at the possibilities.
‘We have a garden that we don’t use much and my wife has always wanted a conservatory,’ says Mike Mooney whose house was recently transformed by Fineline. ‘We looked at an extension, with a lot of glass, quite open, but it would have been cheaper to move house,’ he says.
Before
The conservatory gave us exactly what we wanted at a more realistic price
It’s a common enough thing to find your ideal comes in at too high a price, but it’s a good time to evaluate what
it is you really want from the improvement project you’re planning. Fineline makes that process somewhat easier through its showrooms, where you can explore room sets that are identical to actual builds of both extensions and conservatories.
‘When we went to the showroom we saw the glass, the structures and how they’re built now has completely changed,’ says Mike. ‘I never knew about the different roof systems and how you stop the UV light coming through. And it totally changed my perspective—it turned out that the conservatory gave us exactly what we wanted at a more realistic price.’
There was more to the project than the extended space on the back of the house, as the Mooney’s wanted to make more of the kitchen. Plans for the kitchen were a constraint on the budget but the conservatory design options they chose meant both could be achieved. ‘We discovered we could afford to do the kitchen and get the garden done at the same time.’
‘Neighbours have come in and had a look and and literally gone, wow! It is a complete transformation. And we absolutely love it. We’re having our meals outside now, in the good weather. It has completely changed our house and our lives for the better.’

Here, Mr Buck tells us about his experience with the team at Schmidt Sevenoaks.
How did you hear about Schmidt?
My wife and I had walked past the showroom in Sevenoaks a number of times and had always been impressed by the quality and design of the show kitchens.
What did you love about the Schmidt product?
The high level of quality and the abundance of choice regarding colours and configurations.
How did you find the whole process from start to finish?
The process of working with Ben and his team was enjoyable from the initial design meetings to the final sign off of the fully installed kitchen.
What was the difference between Schmidt and other showrooms you have visited?
The attentive level of service received when entering the showroom and the ultra modern designs of the show kitchen’s really stood out for us.
What was the impression of customer service, designer you worked with and the team in Schmidt Sevenoaks?
We thoroughly enjoyed working with Ben and his team and all of our requests were throughly explored and accommodated where possible. The customer service we received was second to none.
Anything else you would like to add in your own words?
We were extremely happy with each and every stage of the process and Ben has always been very quick to solve any minor challenges during the installation journey. Where certain design tweaks needed to be made, Ben always prioritised and solved everything to our complete satisfaction. It’s just a shame we can’t afford to build another house and do it all again!! Although we are now working with Schmidt again to design and supply dressing room furniture.
Hats off to Ben and all of the team at Schmidt Sevenoaks.
