everybody has a story. Jim found himself in Rome, struggling to live the Emersonian life. Hillary’s humdrum city high school made her long for the action of the ‘burbs. Bob complained about NYC toll roads and really paid for it.

What do you Want to share? Penn’s Master of Liberal Arts can help prepare you to tell your best stories. The Penn MLA is a unique program — you design your own interdisciplinary curriculum to explore rich content and coursework in topics that inspire you. Working alongside passionate faculty and an eclectic community of like-minded students gives you the chance to hone your writing, and uncover your true story.

See where your inspiration can take you. Learn more about the Penn MLA.

At FPA we’re in the business of real people telling real stories. But honestly, we’re more than that. Setting up a stage, a microphone, and putting on an entertaining show, that’s just the beginning… FPA is more than just a stage. We’re a family. Join us for a live event, or tune in to a broadcast, and experience it for yourself. It’s not one story or storyteller that makes us great, either. It’s our collective spirit knitted together. It’s our combined voice. And it’s this spirit, emanating from the FPA family, that moves us to engage in a dialogue and build a greater awareness of issues including acceptance and tolerance; resilience over trauma; civil and human rights for all; heritage and ethnicity; personal empowerment; and more. As a staff, we know we’re better people because of FPA. So this year, come experience a fun and entertaining Festival. But leave as part of our family.

Most of us secretly want to be rock stars. That’s the spirit behind Story League Sings, where performers each get to tell an outrageously funny story from their own lives, and then rip karaokestyle into a well-known song that’s also a joke on the story. Who knew these comedic storytellers could actually (kind of) sing? Featuring performers from Washington D.C.’s Story League and some Philly favorites too, plus a troupe of sassy background singers and dancers.

THE TRUE STORY OF EARTH WIND & FIRE

FOREVER DATE:  Friday, Nov. 14 TIME:  Doors at 7PM, Show at 8PM LOCATION:  Christ Church Neighborhood House COST:  $22 ($17.60 for FPA members) Obie Award-winning playwright and Pulitzer Prize finalist Dael Orlandersmith performs a staged reading of her newest work, an uplifting memoir-driven exploration of the family we are born into and the family we choose. Forever draws from Orlandersmith’s own pilgrimage to the famed Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris — the final resting place of legendary artists such as Marcel Proust, Oscar Wilde, and Jim Morrison. Inspired at the graveside of these timeless artists, Orlandersmith gives a gripping account of the legacy she inherited from her mother  — one of bitterness, abuse, beauty, and art. The creator of the public radio show This American Life talks about his program and how it’s put together: what makes a compelling story, where they find the amazing content for their show, how he and his staff are trying to push broadcast journalism to do things it doesn’t usually do. As part of this, Glass mixes stories from the show live onstage, combining his narration with pre-taped quotes and music, recreating the sound of the show as the audience watches. And he plays funny and memorable moments from the show, and talks about what was behind their creation. Single tickets available at kimmelcenter.org. First Person Arts is at the cutting edge of new work development through First Person Arts RAW. RAW artists push the boundaries of traditional memoir and documentary storytelling by delving deeper into their own form or collaborating across disciplines. Now in its fifth season, we are proud to present interdisciplinary artist and performer, Beth Nixon; and award winning audio producer and Executive Producer of the FPA Podcast, Yowei Shaw. Each of their pieces will challenge you to rethink what it means to tell the truth on stage. First Person Arts RAW is made possible by generous support from the Knight Foundation.

Where is “gone”, anyway? Interdisciplinary artist and performer Beth Nixon navigates the loss of her father, the dinosaurs, an Italian hoagie, and her dentist in this whimsical one-person show. Nine “suitcases theaters” open to reveal volcanic eruptions, eel grass beds, and scientific charts to aid in this imaginative investigation of death and what’s left behind. You’ve never had this much fun mourning everything humankind has ever lost.

Award-winning radio producer and Executive Producer of the FPA Podcast Yowei Shaw (This American Life, Studio 360, NPR) redefines “live radio” in this interactive, multimedia event. A curated lineup of diverse storytellers share personal tales on the theme “Talk to Me” and Yowei performs a radio documentary on stage accompanied by music, audio mixing, and sound effects. This is radio like you’ve never experienced it before.

Not an “author” but have a story you want to publish? A diverse group of published female writers who don’t necessarily identify as authors come together in Women’s Voices in Print. You’ll hear from a family law attorney published by a traditional press, a private investigator who self-published then discovered a secret to selling her books, and others, as they share about their prolific careers, writing experiences, and how they achieved their dream of being published.
