I took over as Executive Director of First Person Arts (FPA) in January 2012, just as the organization entered its second decade. My primary focus has been for FPA to remain relevant to the uniquely diverse Philadelphia community we serve. FPA will continue to be relevant by being a listening organization, providing a platform where artists and nonartists alike can tell the compelling stories that must be told NOW. To that end, when programming the Festival, we asked the arts community what was important to them through the First Person Arts RAW application process. Dozens of artists answered our call. We listened and responded with a Festival featuring the themes that they revealed in their work – themes of legacy, heritage, and family. Long-time activists and friends – poet Sonia Sanchez, musician Bernice Johnson Reagon, and folk/blues artist Toshi Reagon – perform on stage together for the first time. As 2012 comes to a close, Philly artists come together to reflect upon and respond to the major events of the year. The presidential election, the death of Trayvon Martin, conflict in Syria, the fight for birth control, the debate over same-sex marriage, the Olympics, the (mis)predicted end of the world, and things that haven’t even happened yet are on the table for our artist reactions. Using poetry, storytelling, live music, dance, and more, we’ll see powerful, original works created exclusively for Philly Reacts. Artists include poet Jamie J. Brunson, spoken word poet Michelle Myers and author August Tarrier, with more to be announced. We want your reaction, too! Audience members will be invited to share their own responses.

Food icon Rick Nichols celebrates Philadelphia’s candied history, focusing on its chocolatiers. For close to a century, Goobers, Raisinets, and Sno-Caps flowed from factories in Frankford. And today new life is buzzing in the old Goldenberg Peanut Chew factory on Wyoming Street, in an Old City candy shop called Shane, and in a bean-to-bar artisan’s kitchen in a shuttered textile mill. The profound imagery of the noose becomes a portal towards understanding the African/Afro/Black experience, both its past and future. Inspired by their personal stories, memories, and dreams, six dancers explore their exposure to this country’s traumatic history of lynching and ask the question: what would it take for me to fall in love with the USA? A man, a taxi cab, and a dream. Comedian Sam Dingman weaves personal tales with revealing audio recordings from his days driving a New York City taxi. While dreaming of finding fame and fortune as an actor, Sam actually spent his days with toothless convicts, frozen embryos, and murderous city buses. Along the way, he started recording his (mis)adventures. On stage, with a computer and a beer at his side, Sam plays these random solo ruminations and conversations with anonymous passengers. They accompany, interrupt, and counter his stories, creating an intimate and imperfect portrait of a person trying to find his way. Sam discovers that no matter how many insane people or wild things he encounters on the pothole-ridden streets of New York, he may be the craziest one of all. In this workshop, learn the basic elements of Slam storytelling from New York’s Adam Wade, a record 18-time Moth StorySlam winner and two-time Moth Grand Slam champion. Using a master class format, where each student has the opportunity to share a story and receive feedback from Adam, you will discover how to take a crowd by surprise and make them care, how to be sincere and vulnerable on stage, and how to communicate the real meaning behind your experience.
