As I approach the end of my second year as Executive Director of First Person Arts, I marvel at all that our community has accomplished: • We refined our vision statement, committing ourselves as a platform for artists and everyday people to tell the stories that they must tell now. • We created Philly reACTS, a program that harnesses the power of artistic expression in response to provocative current events. • We launched a podcast, creating a new way to share our stories and connect with more story lovers. And we couldn’t have accomplished any of it without our innovative board, staff, members, and live and online audiences. Thank you! We are proud to present the most exciting Festival in our 12-year history. As with last year, we listened to our artists when curating the Festival and were impressed by the unbreakable human spirit with which they face human frailty, immigration, race relations, and family issues. To honor their resiliency, we sought out more programs for the Festival that would directly address or were influenced by these themes. We present innovative, powerful, compelling programming year round, and we want to see our Festival audiences all year. So be sure to pick up a new season brochure at the Festival in November. See you at the Festival! Jamie J. Brunson, Executive Director of First Person Arts

DATES F riday, November 8 and Saturday, November 9 TIME 9PM –10:30PM LOCATION Christ Church Neighborhood House TICKETS $25, $20 for First Person Arts members Created and Performed by Mike Daisey Directed by Jean-Michele Gregory In this controversial new work, Mike Daisey is telling the most important story we’re not allowed to talk about: the story of secrets. Why we make things secret, how we keep secrets, and the power that secrecy has over our world. From the personal to the political, Daisey delves into three individuals who were driven to reveal secrets: Edward Snowden, an NSA contractor who exposed how America spies on its citizens; Chelsea Manning, imprisoned for years after revealing war crimes and atrocities; and Daniel Ellsberg, who released the Pentagon Papers that changed the course of the Vietnam War. These are polarizing figures— all have been called traitors and heroes, whistleblowers and villains, as many struggle to define them. By focusing on the human, Daisey provides a startling look at how we all keep secrets—and the price we pay for them. Visit secretwar.firstpersonarts.org for artist bio, tickets, videos, and more.

DATE Sunday, November 10 TIME 5PM – 6:30PM LOCATION Painted Bride Art Center (Second Space) TICKETS $15, $12 for First Person Arts members Do you know Blackness when you see it? This provocative question informs the work of Dr. Yaba Blay, whose (1)ne Drop Project depicts the stories and images of over 60 individuals from around the world, all of whom identify as Black, but none of whom fit the stereotypical “Black box.” Their candid memoirs challenge our understanding of race and identity. The storytelling event, (1)ne Drop Project Live, interweaves history with stories from participants in the Project and gives a microphone to living testimonies of diversity. The event will include readings from Project participants. The event is held in partnership with the Painted Bride Art Center, which is hosting an exhibit of (1)ne Drop Project photography (Nov 1 - Dec 21). Copies of the (1)ne Drop Project book will be available for sale and signing by the author and participants after the show. More info at 1drop.firstpersonarts.org.

Ed Sobel, RAW Artistic Advisor First Person Arts is on the cutting edge of new work development through First Person Arts RAW. RAW artists push the boundaries of traditional memoir and documentary storytelling by collaborating across disciplines or delving deeper into their own form. Now in its fourth season, RAW offers a development process and a nurturing creative environment with technical support, rehearsal space, and more. This year, we’re proud to present two innovative Philadelphia-based artistic troupes: The Naked Stark, helmed by dancer/choreographer Katherine Kiefer Stark, and Team Sunshine Performance Corporation, led by Benjamin Camp, Makoto Hirano, and Alexander Torra. Each of their pieces will challenge you to rethink what it means to tell the truth on stage.

The Naked Stark, Photo by Kathryn Raines

Falling into Here or The Importance of Normal DATES Friday, November 8 and Saturday, November 9 TIME 7PM – 8PM LOCATION Christ Church Neighborhood House TICKETS $15, $12 for First Person Arts members What is normal? Choreographer and director Katherine Kiefer Stark explores self and sanity in this haunting new autobiographical/biographical work. Stark places herself side by side with her aunt, who suffers from mental illness. She explores their similarities and differences, drawing on interviews with other family members, old letters, and recordings. Set within a complex of ever-shifting floors and walls, dancers spiral, build, and unravel as imagined and actual realities collapse around them. Grappling with these alternative planes and trying to ignore gravity, they confront the undeniable presence of normal. Features Eleanor Goudie-Averill, Beau Hancock, Katherine Kiefer Stark, and Megan Wilson Stern with music by Paul Stern.

DATE Thursday, November 14 TIME 7PM – 8:30PM LOCATION Christ Church Neighborhood House TICKETS $25, $20 for First Person Arts members

“ Everything I know about life, I learned from the daily practice of sitting down to write.” – Dani Shapiro

What happens when words become weapons? Awardwinning writers Sonia Sanchez and Ana Castillo explore that question, drawing upon their own work as activist authors in this provocative literary event.

Award-winning authors Beth Kephart and Dani Shapiro engage in a dynamic conversation on lessons from the “writer’s life” and what it means to write about personal truth. Each author will read from her new book (Handling the Truth: On the Writing of Memoir by Kephart, featured in O Magazine, and Still Writing: The Pleasures and Perils of a Creative Life by Shapiro, one of Publishers Weekly’s Top 10: Literary Biographies, Essays & Criticism). They’ll discuss the process, purpose, and place that memoir writing has in society. A must-see program for anyone who has considered writing his or her life story. After the event, meet the authors! Copies of their books will be available for sale and signing. Tickets, author bios, and more at writingthepersonal. firstpersonarts.org.

They will share their personal experiences, read from their works, and take audience questions on the importance of documenting heritage, the power of words, and the devastating effects when that power is stripped away. Copies of books by Sanchez and Castillo will be available for sale and signing at the end of the event. With an opening performance of Ghetto Bolero by Las Gallas. Ghetto Bolero re-imagines the traditional Latin American boleros from a woman’s point of view. Tickets and more info at poetry.firstpersonarts.org. Special thanks to our sponsor, PECO.
