1795 House Fire Stopped

Firefighters from several towns responded to a structure fire on Carriage Road in Amherst (NH) recently, battling a blaze inside the walls of a home that was built in 1795. The Amherst Police Department was the first to arrive and found smoke coming from the home’s basement. A person was also attempting to control the fire’s spread with a garden hose. The Milford (NH) Fire Department arrived shortly after and immediately requested a first-alarm response. Firefighters quickly identified that the fire was burning within an exterior wall. Due to the home’s older construction, which allowed the fire and smoke to spread through several hidden openings, crews had to make a large cut on the front of the house to access and extinguish the active flames. Meanwhile, other firefighters entered the home to ensure the fire hadn’t spread further. The fire was brought under control in approximately 30 minutes. Crews then used large fans to ventilate the home and remove the smoke. The Milford, Merrimack and Hollis provided mutual aid. The Amherst Police Department and CERT also assisted with traffic control in the area.

Dracut Police and Fire Departments Host Public Safety Night

Dracut (MA) Police Chief Peter Bartlett and Fire Chief Michael Cunha are pleased to report that the Dracut Police and Fire Departments hosted their annual Public Safety Night at Veteran’s Memorial Park. The Dracut Police and Fire Department once again teamed up this year to offer community members an opportunity to check out police cruisers, fire trucks, DPW trucks and more, all while enjoying free hot dogs, burgers and ice cream. Massachusetts State Police, the Northeastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council (NEMLEC), the Massachusetts State 911 Department, the Massachusetts National Guard, Pridestar Trinity EMS, and the Middlesex Sheriff's Office were among other agencies that provided officers and equipment during the

event. Children were able to ride on bouncy slides and spray a hose from a Dracut Fire engine, while police offered a scavenger hunt aimed at locating members of the department.

Residents and children also got an opportunity to dunk Chief Cunha and Chief Bartlett, and other Dracut officials, in a dunk tank to raise money for The Patch Project, which provides proceeds to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute and the Dracut Best Buddies program. Members of the NEMLEC K9 Unit provided a multifaceted K9 demonstration, providing residents with examples of everything from scent tracking to apprehensions. Police estimate that over 1,500 people attended. - Photos courtesy of Dracut FD
