From the Publisher As we begin 2026, we reflect back on this year and the many challenges the Fire and EMS Community has experienced and the commitment and dedication that continues to be the cornerstone of our first responders.

On behalf of all of us at Fire News we thank you for all you do and for the personal sacrifices you and your family make to keep our communities safe.

Thank you also for enhancing your community by participating and initiating events that make where you live, and volunteer, a better place to live.

During this next year we are going to re-introduce editorials, viewpoints and guest opinions by our Fire News editorial staff and those that are leaders in the Fire/EMS Community.

We are also going to dust off some of the editorials from our own Dennis Whittam who served us with his wit and wisdom for many years.

Dennis Whittam always wrote important and timely editorials and we pay tribute to him as we start editorials again by publishing this one from November 2021 – which is still relevant today.

Are You Ready for Winter Whoa’s?

The other day, I responded to a call, only to find that my car windows were totally fogged up and I was unable to safely drive. While I was waiting for my car windows to clear, I realized that before we know it, we will be dealing with horrendous weather conditions that affect our response to the firehouse. I thought it would be fun to share some of the remedies that firefighters shared with me over the years. So, let’s have some fun.

Reminiscing over my past 50 years of driving, I thought of some of the advice I received on the topic of dealing with the cold conditions of winter. Many of the experienced drivers I talked to had to deal with weather conditions in areas like Alaska, the Dakotas and the Adirondacks. My first real lesson on the adverse effects of weather was in the early 70s. I learned how members of the military in Alaska kept their cars from freezing. I learned that drivers had to install battery warmers, oil warmers, coolant warmers and interior warmers. Interior warmer?

Yes, the vinyl seats in cars would crack into pieces if the seats were not kept warm.

Thankfully, Long Island only must deal with frosted windows, weak batteries losing their charge ... and black ice.

In 1979, I learned that cold conditions, even on Long Island, created havoc for my Volkswagen diesel engine. A few of my truck driver friends suggested installing coolant heaters to keep my engine block warm. Voila!

The problem of starting my car was solved.

The downside was that I had to plug my car in at night.

I joined the volunteer fire service in 1992.

It didn’t take me long to figure out that my response in the wee hours of the morning was detained because my car’s windshield had to be defrosted before I could respond.

Thankfully, remote starts came into play.

When a call came in at 0300, I reached over, hit the remote start, got dressed and ran out to my car which was starting to warm up. I also kept a spray bottle of windshield washer fluid that I added a few ounces of dry gas to. Dry gas is an alcohol-based liquid that further lowered the freezing temperature of my windshield washer fluid. It worked well to rapidly defrost my windshield. I also learned not to turn on my windshield wipers right away. Turning the wipers on would remove the fluid and the windows would fog up again.

If you go to your local auto parts store,

you will find windshield covers, spray deicer, and other items to help you overcome frosted windows. If you are in a cold area, do a search online to find all kinds of heaters that can keep your car warm at night.

Why am I sharing my stories of winter whoa’s with you? Over the years, I have seen members scrape a small hole in the frost that covered their windshield. Then, they would drive to the firehouse only realizing that the ice that was scraped off reappeared halfway to the firehouse. Be smart and safe. Don’t respond to the firehouse until your car’s windshield is clear. Have a safe winter. Think of winter whoa’s before they happen.

Brentwood Garage Fire Extends

The Brentwood Fire Department took multiple calls reporting a house fire on Brookdale Avenue about 1230 hours on November 7, 2025. A Brentwood Legion Ambulance chief was on scene first and advised of a fully involved two-car detached garage spreading to a single-story home. Brentwood Fire Marshal Kuehn arrived shortly after, transmitted a working fire and established command. Ladder 3-2-8 made entry into the home which had fire in the basement, first floor and attic and performed searches. The occupants home at the time exited the house safely along with one pet. Engine 3-2-15 put a

line into operation and, as other engines arrived, three additional lines were operated to extinguish the fire in the garage which had collapsed. One line was used to cool off six propane tanks which were in the garage. The fire took over an hour to bring under control. Mutual aid was provided by West Islip, Deer Park, Bay Shore and North Babylon; Brentwood Legion Ambulance provided EMS coverage. There were no reported injuries and the cause of the fire was under investigation.

Commack Ambulance - MCI Drill On November 22, 2025, Suffolk County Fire Rescue EMS Division staff provided moulage support for the Commack Ambulance Corps ahead of their annual MCI Drill with the Commack Fire Department. Sixteen Victim Actors from the Commack Ambulance Youth Squad were dressed with various injuries based upon the presented drill scenario. Thank you to EMS Division staff members Dina Wayrich and Patty Manfredonia for assisting with this effort and thank you to the Commack Ambulance Corps for allowing us to assist with their drill!

Brentwood Shed Extends The Brentwood Fire Department was alerted for a house fire on Laurie Road at about 0335 hours on November 3, 2025. Second Assistant Chief Rosado arrived and reported a fully involved detached shed that was extending to a house next to it.

Crews stretched and operated one line to extinguish the fire as the shed collapsed. The crew from 3-2-8 and Engine 3-2-11 checked the interior of the house for extension, which was negative. The damage was contained to the exterior of the home.

The fire was brought under control within 30 minutes. There were no injuries and the cause of the fire was under investigation.

Coram Working House Fire

At approximately 1321 hours on November 15, 2025, the Coram Fire Department was alerted to Mel Drive in Coram for a house fire. Upon arrival firefighters were met with heavy fire blowing out the rear of a single-story home. While mutual aids were being activated, Coram’s first-due Engine 3 (5-6-3) stretched handlines and started to knock down the fire. Once knocked down, overhaul was started to check for any possible extension. The scene was placed under control within an hour. The cause of the fire was under investigation by the Suffolk County Fire Marshal’s office and the Suffolk County Police Arson Squad.

Multiple Vehicles Burn at North Amityville Auto Body Shop

The North Amityville Fire Company was first alerted for an outside fire at about 0330 on November 16, 2025. Upon arrival of Engine 1-7-2, numerous vehicles were found involved at the rear of an auto body shop on Ralph Avenue at New Highway. The crew from 1-7-2 put one line into operation to begin extinguishing the fires. The Amityville Fire Department was requested to the scene with an engine and North Lindenhurst was requested for a ladder. The Amityville crew relieved the crew on the handline and the crew from North Lindenhurst gained entry into a neighboring building to check for extension, which was negative. The fire was brought under control within an hour and approximately 10 vehicles, including two tow trucks were destroyed.

The cause of the fire was under investigation. Chief of Department McLeod was in command.

Baldwin Working Fire

On the evening of November 19, 2025, the Baldwin Fire Department, along with mutual aid companies, operated at the scene of a working fire on Northern Boulevard off Bertha Drive.

Firefighters stretched three handlines and put at least two into operation for fire in a two-story, split-level private dwelling. The scene was placed under control within 30 minutes, and the cause of the fire was under investigation. Baldwin Chief of Department Eberhart had command.

Suffolk Credit Union Backs Brentwood and Yaphank Fire Departments with $5,000 Grants Suffolk Credit Union (SCU), in partnership with the Federal Home Loan Bank of New York (FHLB NY), has awarded $5,000 grants to the Brentwood and Yaphank Fire Departments to help further its mission of protecting and serving the local community.

The grants are part of the FHLB NY Small Business Grant Program, which provides financial assistance to nonprofit organizations, farms, and small businesses working to strengthen neighborhoods across Long Island and beyond.

Smoke Alarms Save Lives ... Again

This morning, on November 23, 2025, at 0325 hours, all ManhassetLakeville Fire Department (M-LFD) companies were alerted for a reported house fire on Tobin Avenue in Great Neck. Chief of Department Porras along with Deputy Chiefs Weisburd, Chen and Dolan all arrived within minutes and encountered a large volume of fire coming from the rear of the home, extending through the attic of the house. Great Neck Alert was requested to the scene as a FAST. M-LFD Company 1 Engine 8711 and Company 4 Ladder 8743 also responded. Multiple handlines were stretched, but due to the volume

of fire and extensive overhaul required, a second-alarm assignment was requested and Great Neck Vigilant and New Hyde Park responded. The homeowners were alerted to the fire by their smoke detectors and escaped from the home. Unfortunately, two pets perished. Three firefighters were treated at the scene for minor injuries

by M-LFD EMS. The cause of the fire was under investigation.

Riverhead Barn Fire

On November 12, 2025, just before 1700 hours, the Riverhead Fire Department responded to a barn fire on Sound Avenue in Riverhead at the Wells Farm. Responding units arrived to find a working fire involving two barn structures, one of which was fully engulfed. Multiple hazards were present, including farm equipment, vehicles, propane tanks and a diesel-fuel tank located close to the fire. The farm has been worked by the Well’s family since the mid 1600s.

Crews stretched handlines and began an aggressive attack to contain the fire and protect nearby exposures. Firefighters also entered the barn to assist with livestock rescue efforts. Twenty-one pigs were removed from the structure, with 19 surviving due to the coordinated actions of firefighters and first responders. Approximately 30 chickens perished.

Mutual aid to the scene was provided by Flanders, Wading River, Jamesport, Mattituck, Hampton Bays and Eastport. The Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps and an ambulance from the Cutchogue also responded; Ridge stood by along with Manorville. One police officer and two civilians were treated for smoke inhalation and transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center.

More than 74 firefighters operated for more than three-and-a-half hours to bring the fire under control and conduct extensive overhaul.

The scene was turned over to the Riverhead Town Fire Marshal’s Office, the Riverhead Detective Division and the Suffolk County Police Arson Section for investigation. According to officials, the fire did not appear to be suspicious.

Franklin Square & Munson Building Fire On the evening of November 23, 2025, the Franklin Square and Munson Fire Department, along with mutual aid companies, operated at the scene of a multiple alarm building fire on Franklin Avenue off 3rd Avenue. Several handlines and master streams were put into operation for heavy fire in a single-story commercial building occupied by a bagel store and a Ralph’s Italian Ices. There were no reported injuries, and the cause of the fire was under investigation. The scene was placed under control approximately three and a half hours into the operation and all fire department units were under the command of Franklin Square and Munson Chief of Department Michael Multari.

Wantagh House Fire on Beech St. At approximately 0840 hours on November 18, 2025, Dispatcher Ed Campis received several calls reporting heavy smoke from the rear of the house on Beech Street in Wantagh. Second Assistant Chief Paul Krussmann arrived, assumed command, and transmitted a working fire and reported no occupants in the house. Third Assistant Chief Chris Dolley arrived shortly after to lead the interior attack. Engine 1 secured a water supply at a nearby hydrant and stretched a hoseline to attack the fire at the rear. They were led by Lieutenant J.T. McCarron. Engine 5, led

by Firefighter Joe Giardina stretched a second line inside. Ladder 2, led by Captain Mike Fratello arrived and began search and ventilation operations and were joined by Ladder 1, led by ex-Captain Steve Burke. Seaford Ladder 3 responded as the FAST and Wantagh Engine 4, Rescues 2 and 3 and the Rehab Unit were on to the second floor. The Nassau County Fire Marshal and Nassau scene. EMS Command was established with EMS Captain Steve County Police Arson Unit were on scene to investigate the cause and Lincke in charge. Mutual aid also came from Bellmore and origin of the fire, although it did not appear suspicious.

Massapequa House Fire

The Massapequa Fire Department was called to a house fire on Clocks Boulevard about 0315 on November 15, 2025. Chief of Department Friedland, Second and Third Assistant Chiefs McCaffrey and Kennedy responded first and were advised of multiple calls being taken. Chief Friedland arrived, transmitted a working fire and reported fire on the rear deck of a two-story home that extended to the home.

An occupant used a garden hose to extinguish some of the fire. Engine 6314 grabbed a hydrant past the house. Engine crews stretched two lines with one going into operation. The crew from Ladder 632 searched the home and checked for extension. The fire was brought under control within an hour with no reported injuries. Mutual aid to the scene was provided by Amityville for a FAST and South Farmingdale for a working truck. The cause of the fire was under investigation.

Wading River Commercial Fire On November 18, 2025 at 0206 hours, the Wading River Fire Department was activated for a commercial structure fire at a pizzeria in a row of stores on Route 25A in Wading River. The first chief on the scene reported to FRES of a working fire and started mutual aid id departments from Rocky Point, Ridge, Riverhead, Manorville, Middle Island, Brookhaven National Laboratory, Sound Beach, Miller Place, Shirley (Ambulance) and Mastic.

Smithtown Hazmat Call

At 0834 hours on November 19, 2025, Smithtown Fire Rescue patients. Firefighters were able to locate the leak, isolate it, and venCommunications received a call for CO2 tanks leaking at Chipotle tilate the building. North Bellmore House Fire

In the early morning of November 20, 2025, the North Bellmore Fire Department operated at the scene of a working fire on Earl Place North off Earl Place West. Firefighters stretched two handlines and put one into operation for a fire in the attic of a two-story Cape-style private dwelling. Wantagh was designated the FAST and responded to the scene with Ladder 6912. All people and pets made it out of the home safely and there were no reported injuries.

The cause of the fire was under investigation and all fire department units were under the command of North Bellmore Chief of Department Capuano.

Manhasset-Lakeville Car, Garage Fire Extends

On November 21, 2025, all Manhasset-Lakeville Fire Department companies were alerted to a reported building fire on Great Neck Road in Great Neck. Upon the arrival of Chief Porras, a vehicle fire was encountered inside of a garage in the rear of the building which had begun to extend to the deck on the second floor of the residence. A hoseline was stretched to extinguish the fire while the truck companies overhauled the deck area.

House Fire on Mayfair Road in Nesconset

The Nesconset Fire Department responded to a house fire on Mayfair Road on Thanksgiving, (November 27, 2025) at 2027 hours. Considerable damage occurred to the residence, which was occupied at the time. Mutual aid companies from Hauppauge, Ronkonkoma, Central Islip, Lakeland and Smithtown responded to the scene to assist.

Suffolk Police and Smithtown Town Fire Marshal were on scene investigating the cause.

Hempstead Car Fire

Port Washington Deck Fire

On November 21, 2025 just after 1300 hours, the Hempstead Fire Department was dispatched to a reported car fire at the intersection of Church Street and Harold Avenue. Units quickly arrived to a car on fire in the street. The crew of Engine 1 utilized a handline to quickly extinguish the fire with units being placed back in service in approximately 20 minutes.

On November 28, 2025, at approximately 2335 hours, the Port Washington Fire Department along with a dual-response engine from Plandome and ladder from Manhasset-Lakeville were dispatched to a reported house fire on Bonnie Heights Road in Manhasset. Duty Chief 8524 quickly arrived to find active fire on a rear deck with possible extension to the house. Plandome Engine 842 stretched the initial line while crews checked the adjoining wall for extension. With no extension found, crews quickly extinguished the deck fire, which appeared to be caused by a heating unit, and overhauled the area before the scene was placed under control in approximately 40 minutes.

North Bellmore House Fire The North Bellmore Fire Department operated at a working house fire on Sacco Place on December 1, 2025. The fire was believed to have started in the basement with heavy smoke and heat on the first floor. Mutual aid companies also responded to the scene. 2 Die in Fifty Acre Road South Fire

The Saint James Fire Department was dispatched to a house fire on Fifty Acre Road South on November 30, 2025 at 1514. When firefighters arrived, a heavy fire condition was discovered on the first and second floors of the home. Mutual aid companies from Nesconset, Smithtown, Nissequogue, Stony Brook, Hauppauge and Central Islip responded to the scene. Unfortunately, two occupants died at the scene and a third was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital. The Suffolk Police and Smithtown Fire Marshals were on scene investigating the cause.

Albertson Snuffs Willis Avenue Car Fire

The Albertson Fire Company was dispatched to a reported car fire on Willis Avenue. Engine 806 arrived to an active fire in the engine compartment of a vehicle and stretched a line to quickly, extinguishing the fire. With the assistance of Engine 8011 and Ladder 809, crews operated on scene for approximately 20 minutes before being released.

Well Involved on Arrival in Roosevelt

On the evening of December 3, 2025, the Roosevelt Fire Department, along with mutual aid companies, operated at the scene of a well-involved house fire on Grant Street off Washington Avenue. Firefighters put multiple handlines into operation for heavy fire in a two-story private dwelling. Despite early reports of people possibly trapped, all occupants made it out of the home safely. There were no serious injuries, and the cause of the fire was under investigation. Roosevelt Chief of Department Hector Tyler, Jr., had command.

Rocky Point Working Structure Fire On November 29, 2025, the Rocky Point Fire Department was activated for a reported structure fire at an auto body shop located along Route 25A. Upon the arrival of 5A7-31, units were met with heavy smoke pushing from the building. Rocky Point Engine 7 quickly stretched an attack line to the front of the building, making an aggressive interior push to locate and extinguish the seat of the fire. Crews encountered heavy smoke conditions inside but were able to bring the flames under control through coordinated suppression efforts. Rocky Point Truck 14 arrived shortly after and initiated primary searches of the structure. All searches came back negative. The main body of fire was knocked down within approximately 30 minutes, with the scene placed under control about one hour after dispatch. Mutual aid was provided by the Brookhaven National Laboratory, Mt Sinai, Miller Place and Wading River. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Suffolk County Fire Marshal’s office and the Suffolk County Police Arson Squad.

Hauppauge Truck Fire

At 1053 hours, the Hauppauge Fire Department was dispatched for a vehicle fire on Simeon Wood Road, near Express Drive North. Second Assistant Chief Mendola arrived first and reported an active fire in the cab of a detached tractor trailer. Firefighters stretched one handline to quickly extinguish the fire. The occupant was able to exit the vehicle without sustaining any injuries and the cause of the fire was believed to be electrical in nature.

Car Fire on Pennsylvania Ave. in Massapequa

The Massapequa Fire Department was alerted for a car fire at Hicksville Road and Pennsylvania Avenue at about 0355 hours on November 17, 2025. First Assistant Chief Zimmerman was the first to arrive and advised of an involved vehicle on Pennsylvania

Avenue. Third Assistant Chief Kennedy arrived shortly after, along with Engines 6311, 6314 and Ladder 632. The crew from 6311 put one line into operation and had the fire extinguished in about 10 minutes.

Bellport FD Ladies Auxiliary Celebrate 50 Years Members of the Bellport Fire Department turned out to honor and celebrate the Ladies Auxiliary on their 50th Anniversary. Chief Jason Crane presented a plaque to President Patty Van Schaick and tickets to each member to the Gateway Playhouse Holiday on Ice and thanked the women for their commitment to the department. A complete dinner was catered by local restaurants and enjoyed by all.

Franklin Square-Munson Handles Overturned SUV

The Franklin Square-Munson Fire Department responded to an overturned SUV with a person trapped on Nassau Boulevard near Terrace Avenue on November 21, 2025. Multiple tools were put to work and the occupant was extricated and transported to an area hospital by County police ambulance.

Quick Stop at Wellwood Avenue Car Fire

Manhasset-Lakeville Responds to Fully Involved Vehicle

The East Farmingdale Fire Company was alerted for a reported vehicle fire at the 7-11 on Wellwood Avenue at about 0735 hours on November 20, 2025. First Assistant Chief Greco arrived to an involved vehicle in the entrance. The driver exited the vehicle safely. Engine 1-5-1, Ambulance 1-5-10, First Responder 1-5-80, and Fire Police 1-5-12 responded. The crew from 1-5-1 put one handline into operation to extinguish the fire in about 10 minutes.

Vehicle Accident in Baldwin Kills Pedestrian

A 42-year-old man was killed after this single-vehicle crash at Grand Avenue and Ethel Kloberg Drive in Baldwin early on November 8, 2025. Baldwin Fire Department units were dispatched to assist Nassau County Police.

On November 2nd, 2025, at approximately 1909 hours, the Terryville Fire Department was activated for an MVA on Colony Road in Selden. Initial reports stated that a vehicle had crashed into a home. Arriving Terryville chiefs were met with a vehicle in the home. Units worked to make sure no injuries were sustained; one patient was evaluated on scene. The car had crashed through the fence and shortly after into the front of the home. The Brookhaven Town Fire Marshal’s office was requested at the scene for structural damage inspection.

1 Arrested for Coram Arson

On November 13, 2025, at approximately 2353 hours, the Coram Fire Department was activated for a structure fire on Glenmere Lane in Coram. Coram Chief 32 was the first unit on the road. was advised of reports of arson, stating someone intentionally set the house on fire. Suffolk County Police arrived and confirmed an active fire from the side of the residence. Coram Engine 2, crews had difficulty getting water due to a vehicle blocking the hydrant but eventually established a water supply and stretched a line to knock down the fire. Coram Ladder 1 arrived and assisted. Crews made entry through the front door and made a push on the fire.

Additional lines were also stretched to the side of the home to knock down the heavy fire blowing out of the 4-Side of the structure.

Truck companies created an opening in a metal garage door using

a saw. After the bulk of the fire was knocked down, crews began to expose hidden pockets of fire in the eaves of the home. The fire had extended into and throughout the attic as units transitioned to overhaul and extinguished the hotspot and pulled some ceiling. The alarm was then placed under control. The Suffolk County Police Arson Squad and Brookhaven Town Fire Marshal’s Office were called to the scene. Selden, Medford, Port Jefferson and Terryville responded on mutual aid. Ambulances were provided by Port Jefferson EMS. As fire operations took place, Suffolk County Police received reports that the alleged suspect who set fire to the home was located just down the street, as a result they responded and placed one suspect under arrest.

Thanksgiving Give Back by South Farmingdale

On Thanksgiving morning (November 27, 2025) members of the South Farmingdale Fire Department’s “Sunshine Committee” and their families got up early to prepare meals for those less fortunate.

Partnering with the school district who provided the number of families and a drop location and the local girl scout troop who provided canned goods, the members were able to feed 49 people and

St. Josephs and Good Samaritans hospitals as well. A department spokesperson said, “Seeing how grateful these people were and all the hugs we received makes everything worthwhile. Being out in our community helping is what it’s all about.”

Wantagh Starbucks Oven Fire Wantagh firefighters enter the Starbucks Restaurant in the Willow Wood Shopping Center on Wantagh Avenue in Wantagh to investigate an oven fire. The incident occurred about 1330 hours and brought two engines and a truck to the scene. The store was evacuated and two smoke ejectors were put to work.

On November 28, 2025, at approximately 1255 hours, the Jericho Fire Department was dispatched to a reported MVA with car fire on Jericho Turnpike in front of Jericho Plaza. On October 18, 2025, the Nassau County Volunteer Firemen’s Parade and Drill Team Captain’s Association held their 56th Annual Installation and Awards Dinner. The evening began with ex-Chief Scott Clark of the Hempstead Fire Department swearing in the 2025 Nassau County Executive Board: President Michael Spatz – South Hempstead, 1st Vice President Patrick Cloudman – West Hempstead, 2nd Vice President Daniel Schmidt – Bellmore, 3rd Vice President Gerard Boettcher – West Hempstead, Sergeant-at-Arms Michael Boland, Jr. – North Bellmore, Recording Secretary Lori Kabelka, Financial Secretary Thomas Fitzsimons – Baldwin; Corresponding Secretary Susan Reese – Bellmore; Treasurer Scott Clark – Hempstead; Junior Past President – Matthew Spinelli – Hempstead.

After dinner, special presentations were made to incoming President Michael Spatz, outgoing Nassau County President Matthew Spinelli, outgoing NYS President Stan Dybus, Jr., and outgoing Nassau County Area Rep. Jay Podolski. Presentations continued with the top five Motorized teams receiving trophies; 1st Place the West Hempstead Westerners (89.5 points), 2nd Place the North Belmore Rinky Dinks (80.5 points), 3rd Place the Oyster Bay Teddy’s Boys (59.5 points), 4th Place the South Hempstead Rascals (54 points), 5th Place the New Hyde Park Termites (42.5 points). The North Bellmore Rink Dinks received the Nassau County Total Truck Points Champions Trophy in honor of ex-Chief Richard Roper for his dedicated service to making sure every drill team truck was able to compete on Saturday. His knowledge and unwavering commitment was unmatched for over 50 years.

The South Hempstead Rascals were awarded the Executive Board Award for Sportsmanship, and the North Merrick Stump Jumpers received the Executive Board Award for Most Improved Team. Susan Reese of the Bellmore Ball Breakers was awarded her Life Membership into the NCVFP and DTCA. The evening also included the induction of two new Nassau County Hall of Fame members, Preston Hicks of the Manhasset-Lakeville Minute Men, and John ‘Jackie’ Cloudman, Sr., of the Hempstead Flukes (posthumously).

New Ladder for East Norwich

Congratulations to the East Norwich Fire Company who recently put their new Ladder 513 into service. The new rig is a Ferrara HD-107 rearmount ladder that replaces a 2008 Ferrara Inferno and has several features including a 500-gallon tank, three preconnected handlines, and seating for eight. The Fire Company currently runs the new 513 as the first piece of apparatus on most of its alarms. The best of luck to them with the latest addition to the fleet.

North Bellmore House Fire The North Bellmore Fire Department was alerted for a house fire on Earl Place North at about 0120 hours on November 24, 2025. First arriving units had smoke showing from a two-story home and a working fire was transmitted. Engine 654 was first due and crews stretched two lines, with one going into operation to extinguish fire in the attic.

Ladders 657 and 658 set up in front of the home and those crews laddered, searched and vented.

The occupants home at the time exited the house safely. The fire was brought under control within an hour and there were no reported injuries. Mutual aid to the scene was provided by Wantagh. The cause of the fire was under investigation and Chief of Department Capuano was in command.

Commack’s Anthony Napoli, Sr. Honored for 50 Years of Service

The Commack Fire Department (CFD) honored ex-Chief Anthony Napoli, Sr., for 50 years of service with the CFD. Anthony joined the department on June 21, 1975, and has served in every rank within the organization.

Anthony is as active today as he was when he first joined. Several of his colleagues, family, friends and elected officials paid tribute and honored Anthony for his unwavering dedication and service to the department and Commack community on November 9, 2025, at a ceremony at Commack headquarters.

Wantagh Probies 1 Step Closer to Class A

On November 24, 2025, the Chief’s Office and Training Committee recognized the members for successfully completing the next phase of their training by issuing them black helmets with an orange “Probationary” frontpiece and a certificate of completion. This brings them another step closer to Class “A” status and signifies that they are still learning, but have attained a minimum level of proficiency to perform more functions at a fire scene. They will continue to receive training both at the Nassau County Fire Service Academy and through weekly training at the Wantagh Fire Department Training Facility and in their respective firehouses. Chief of Department Leonard Mathewson and his assistant chiefs were on hand to make the presentations and he also thanked the Training Committee for their hard work and dedication.

In addition to many weeks of training that they receive at the Nassau County Fire Service Academy, “Probies” attend additional training con-

ducted by the Wantagh Fire Department Training Committee. Here they are able to hone and demonstrate proficiency in many areas including: EMS, basic fire behavior, proper use of hoselines and ladders, radio procedures, engine and truck company operations, use of thermal-imaging cameras, firefighting tools, SCBA use, and search and rescue operations and personal safety systems (PSS), among other things. This training is conducted in both a classroom setting as well as hands-on and is conducted once or twice weekly for a minimum of 45 hours of training.

SC Volunteer Firefighters Association 2025 Annual Dinner

On October 18, 2025, the Suffolk County Volunteer Firefighters Association (SCVFA) held their 2025 dinner at the Coram Fire Department. The Association installed their newly elected President Giovanni ‘Cheech’ Chiarelli (Smithtown FD).

Immediate Past-President Vincent Ammirati (Selden FD) was recognized for his service and presented with his Past President’s plaque.

The Association also installed their newly elected Officers, Daniel Brooks as 1st Vice-President (Patchogue FD), Donald Bracciodieta as 2nd Vice-President (Central Islip FD), and William Mullane as 3rd Vice-President (Center Moriches FD). Also installed were Jean Christensen as Secretary (West Sayville FD), Keith Vella as Sergeant-at-Arms (Center Moriches FD), Jerry Owenberg as Treasurer (West Babylon FD) and Thomas Prendergast as Financial Secretary (Selden FD).

The Association honored Firefighter Anthony Serpenti of the North Babylon Fire Department as the 2025 Suffolk County Fireman of the Year. Firefighter Serpenti was cited for his actions, while in his personal vehicle, he followed a wrong way driver who became involved in an MVA into a boatyard with ensuing fire. Firefighter Serpenti used a portable fire extinguisher to hold back the flames in the passenger compartment of the vehicle to protect the unconscious driver. He then was able to remove the unconscious driver from the vehicle with a SCPD Officer and he further provided first aid until the arrival of EMS. The Association presented their first ever Unit Citation recognizing the Deer Park Fire Department for their outstanding performance and actions on July 28, 2024. A vehicle was driven into a Nail Salon on Grand Boulevard in Deer Park, creating an MCI event with four DOA’s and nine treated and transported to various hospitals.

Carle Place Chief Geddish Homecoming

Hundreds of firefighters from dozens of fire departments, along with various dignitaries and Carle Place residents, descended upon Carle Place Fire Department Headquarters on the night of November 20, 2025, to welcome home Assistant Chief Willie Geddish. Chief Geddish spent the past few weeks in an area burn unit following injuries sustained while operating at a working house fire in Albertson late last month. Chief Geddish along with Carle Place Firefighter Charles Karen were recognized for their efforts that day by the dignitaries on hand. Firefighter Karen is credited with helping pull the Chief to safety and prevent him from sustaining further injury. Here’s wishing Chief Geddish a continued speedy recovery and all the best.

FASNY Honors Senator Monica Martinez for Her Advocacy for New York’s Volunteer Fire Service

On November 19, 2025, the Firefighters Association of the State of New York (FASNY) presented its prestigious annual Golden Trumpet Award to State Senator Monica R. Martinez of Brentwood, recognizing her exceptional leadership and unwavering support for New York’s volunteer fire service.

For more than 30 years, the Golden Trumpet has been awarded to individuals who have gone above and beyond in championing the needs of volunteer firefighters — particularly in the areas of legislation, policy, and public safety. Senator Martinez embodies that spirit of partnership and advocacy.

Throughout her tenure in the State Senate, she has been a steadfast ally of the fire service, working tirelessly on behalf of the volunteer departments and EMS agencies in her Long Island district — and across the entire state. As Chair of the Senate Local Government Committee, she has been instrumental in advancing legislation to strengthen emergency response systems, support recruitment and retention, and improve safety for both first responders and the communities they serve.

Among her many efforts, Senator Martinez has championed reforms to the Volunteer Firefighter Benefit Law and the volunteer fire and EMS state income tax credit to ensure volunteers receive the support they deserve, and has been a strong voice on critical issues including emergency communications, disaster preparedness, lithiumion battery safety, and 9/11 responder health. She continues to lead efforts to modernize and fund the state’s critical EMS infrastructure and to allow for collection of both property tax and income tax exemptions for volunteer first responders — benefits she believes should also extend to the surviving spouses. In her own district, Sen. Martinez has secured critical funding to support volunteer training at the Suffolk County Fire Academy.

Senator Martinez has consistently fought to enhance local emergency response capabilities by bolstering communications equipment and dispatch services, while supporting initiatives to recruit and retain the next generation of volunteers. She also has called attention to the need for better understanding of lithium-ion battery fires and ensuring volunteers are well-equipped to respond to these types of emergencies.

Islip Town MCI Ferry Drill

On November 1, 2025, the Islip Ambulance Chiefs Association, in partnership with the Sayville Ferry Service, Sayville Fire Department, and Suffolk County Fire Rescue, hosted a large-scale MCI exercise at the Sayville Ferry Terminal and surrounding waters off Sayville Beach. The full-scale drill simulated a mass casualty ferry incident, testing the coordinated response of more than 30 local, state and federal agencies. The Sayville Ferry Service — vital to transportation for Fire Island communities including Sailors Haven, Water Island, Cherry Grove and Fire Island Pines — served as the focal point of the scenario. Over 300 participants, including first responders, youth organization members, and community volunteers, took part in this MCI-on-the-water exercise. The drill aimed to strengthen inter-agency communication and readiness in

the event of a real-life ferry emergency involving both on-board and waterborne victims. The exercise began at 1000 hours and lasted approximately three hours, during which emergency vehicles, personnel, and marine units operated in the area. Media representatives were invited to observe beginning at 0900 and residents were advised of increased emergency activity around the ferry terminal.

Officials emphasized that the exercise was conducted safely and with minimal disruption to the surrounding community. “This type of training is essential to ensure that every agency involved is prepared to respond swiftly and effectively when lives are at stake,” said representatives from the Islip Ambulance Chiefs Association.

2025 Suffolk County Volunteer Firemen’s Parade & Drill Team Captain’s Association Installation and Awards

The Lindenhurst Snails hosted the 2025 Suffolk County Volunteer Firemen’s Parade and Drill Team Captain’s Association Annual Installation and awards dinner at the Fireman’s Park Pavilion on November 1, 2025. As the evening continued the Central Islip Junior Hoboes were recognized for their 2025 NYS Junior Championship. Teams then received trophies for individual and combined event point totals for the season before the Suffolk County Motorized Total Points Trophies were presented to; 1st place the Central Islip Hoboes (141 points), 2nd place the West Sayville Flying Dutchmen (137.5 points), 3rd place the Hagerman Gamblers (75 points), 4th place the North Lindenhurst Piston Knockers (71 points), and 5th place the Bay Shore Redskins (61 points). REMSCO Awards Ceremony for 2024

On October 22, 2025, the Suffolk County Regional EMS Council held their 2024 Awards Ceremony at the Southold Fire Department. The ceremony was attended by the council members, county Legislators, local officials and various fire department and EMS agencies.

The West Islip Fire Department received the New York State Innovation Award forrtheir work in recruitment and retention. The EMS Leadership Award was presented to Dennis Kelly of the Community Ambulance Company (Sayville). The Educator of Excellence was presented to Ryan O’Reilly of the East Moriches Community Ambulance.

The Basic Life Support Provider of the year was received by Gianna Minogue of Community Ambulance Company.

The Advanced Life Supporter of the Year was received by John McAuley of the West Islip Fire Department. The Registered Professional Nurse of Excellence was presented to Vanessa Vaugh from South Country Ambulance. The Communications Specialist award went to George Burmester from Suffolk County Fire Rescue and the Youth Provider was awarded to Stephanie Cardona of the Hampton Bays Ambulance.

The EMS Agency of the Year was bestowed to the Southold Fire Department for their hard work in 2024.

Nassau County K9 Leah Walkout Ceremony On November 25, 2025, a walkout ceremony was held for Nassau County Fire Marshal Accelerant Detection K9 Leah who retires following a nine-year career with the Nassau County Fire Marshal’s Office. At the walkout ceremony were various dignitaries, other accelerant detection canines, and several members of the Nassau County Fire Service – many from the Port Washington Fire Department {of which Leah’s handler Matt Kerin is a recent ex-Chief). Proclamations were presented to Matt and Leah with the retiree also receiving toys, treats and photos from over the years.

Taking Leah’s place in the Fire Marshal’s Office will be the newest, four-legged hire – Chuck. Wishing Leah many years of health and happiness.

Good Stop at Westbury House Fire On the night of November 8, 2025, the Westbury Fire Department, along with mutual aid companies, operated on the scene of a working fire on Dover Street off Nassau Street.

Firefighters stretched two handlines and put one into operation for a fire in the attic of a twostory private dwelling. All occupants made it out of the home safely and there were no serious injuries reported. The cause of the fire was under investigation, and the scene was placed under control within 30 minutes.

All American Awards Fundraiser

On November 8, 2025, at 1400 hours, the Coram Fire Department, in conjunction with the Farmingville Fire Department, hosted and sponsored a spaghetti dinner and Chinese auction. The event, formally known as the “All American Fundraiser,” took place at the Coram Fire Department headquarters, located on Middle Country Road in Coram, in support of Dominick Coppola, the dedicated owner of All American Awards & Uniforms.

Throughout the years, Mr. Coppola has been a community leader and has provided extraordinary work and support to the fire service. As a remarkable shop owner, Dominick has supplied essential gear and uniforms to numerous fire departments across the area, ensuring they have everything they need, whenever they need it. For years, Dominick has gone above and beyond to help those in need, and now he faces the challenge of brain cancer. As he remains strong and hopeful, he seeks the robust support of those around him, just as he has always supported them.

The community aims to continue showing their appreciation and gratitude to Dominick. The fundraiser featured a dinner and numerous raffles, with the goal of raising money for Dominick. At 1800, a ceremony honoring Dominick began, with multiple department members speaking in support of him and acknowledging his actions on behalf of their departments over the years. Dominick was also made an honorary member of the Farmingville Fire Department and received an award plaque in appreciation of his dedication. The award was presented by ex-Deputy Chief Joe DiBernardo of the FDNY. Members of Dominick’s family expressed their gratitude for the community's support. The ceremony concluded around 1900, and the raffle winners were announced. The fundraiser came to a close at 2000 hours. “I Wear Gray for Dominick,” a symbol of appreciation for his contributions and dedication to the Long Island fire service.

Freeport’s Lester G. Fieldsa

On the morning of November 20, 2025, a funeral service was held for Freeport Fire Department ex-Chief Lester G. Fieldsa who led the department in 1984 and who passed away on November 16, 2025, at the age of 92.

Ex-Chief Fieldsa was a proud, 60-plus-year member of Emergency Company No. 9, where he was often looked up to. Aside from serving with the Freeport Fire Department for over six

decades Lester was a United States Navy veteran having joined during the Korean War, an Eagle Scout, and leader of Boy Scout Troop 36.

The Thursday morning final gathering took place at the Hungerford and Clark Funeral Home in Freeport – the same place where visitation and a firematic service took place a day prior. Burial took place at Calverton National

NFFF AWARDS OVER $500,000 IN SCHOLARSHIPS TO FAMILIES OF FALLEN FIREFIGHTERS The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF) has awarded 56 scholarships totaling $535,109 to the spouses, children and stepchildren of fallen firefighters for the 2025–2026 academic year.

Since 1997, the NFFF Scholarship Program has provided more than $7.39 million in tuition assistance to 1,765 students across the country. This year’s recipients include 38 returning scholars and 18 first-time recipients. NFFF awards scholarships based on applicants’ financial need and academic performance, with a special consideration for those working toward degrees in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM), and public safety fields.

“These scholarships reflect the NFFF’s ongoing commitment to the families of our nation’s fallen firefighters,” said National Fallen Firefighters Foundation CEO Victor Stagnaro. “Stepping up to cover all or some of their tuition is the least we can do, and I know our generous partners feel the same.”

REMSCO CPR & Trauma Save Awards Over 350 individuals packed the South Country Ambulance Company which hosted this years Suffolk County REMSCO CPR and Trauma Awards. The CPR Lifesaving Award recognizes first responders who work together to save a life where the patient was in cardiac arrest and is returned to their home neurologically intact. The Trauma Lifesaving Award is given to responders who cared for a patient who was in extremis or seriously injured, received care, and was transported to the hospital. These patients had some lifesaving intervention performed by EMS providers and survived to be discharged from the hospital.

The Chain of Survival begins with the recognition of an emergency and the call to 911. The Emergency Dispatchers provide life-saving instructions to lay persons at the scene and coordinate the responding EMS units. As part of the emergency response, law enforcement officers and fire service personnel often respond to the scene in addition to EMS. CPR or other lifesaving interventions are performed while an AED or cardiac monitor is applied to the patient to deliver defibrillation as soon as possible.

Sometimes, advanced airways are placed and IV access is obtained to deliver lifesaving medications.

Long Island Energy Storage Summit Highlights Safety, Collaboration, Local Benefits Story and photos by Mary Malloy/Fire News

Fire safety, labor, and local state and government leaders convened at the Charles B. Wang Center at Stony Brook University recently to discuss and promote New York’s nation-leading safety regulations for battery energy storage systems (BESS), which are playing an increasingly critical role in ensuring a reliable, resilient, affordable and abundant electric grid.

National fire safety experts from the FDNY, Energy Safety Response Group (ESRG) and Underwriters Laboratories (UL) discussed the comprehensive technical standards and testing protocols that form the foundation of New York’s rigorous safety requirements.

The summit reinforced that collaboration among utilities, first responders, labor, and local and state government is essential to modernizing New York’s electric grid, while keeping energy reliable and affordable. As electricity demand grows, battery energy storage will play an increasingly important role in strengthening system resilience, reducing costs, and enabling greater renewable energy integration.

“Local fire departments across Long Island have been engaged in understanding and implementing New York’s updated fire code for energy storage,” said Town of Riverhead Chief Fire Marshal Andrew Smith. “The state’s framework gives us the tools, training, and confidence we need to review and oversee these projects safely. It’s clear that with the right standards and coordination, battery storage can be deployed responsibly and benefit our communities for years to come.”

“Across New York, and especially here on Long Island, we’re seeing what responsible clean energy progress looks like,” said Marguerite Wells, Executive Director of the Alliance for Clean Energy New York.

“When communities, first responders, and developers pull in the same direction, storage delivers exactly what our grid needs: reliability, costefficiency, and lower emissions. This summit made that clear.”

The new fire standards were recommended by an interagency fire safety working group put together by Governor Kathy Hochul in 2023 and enacted this past July by the NYS Fire Prevention and Building Code Council.

Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) is essential in ensuring that there is enough renewable energy to feed the grid when solar and wind are not fully maximized.

It allows us to integrate clean, abundant new energy generation, shift power to meet peak needs, and maintain reliability when the system is under high demand.”

By working together with fire safety experts, local governments, organized labor, and our state partners, we’re ensuring that Long Island remains affordable and competitive.”

Among the new regulations are requirements for intensive first responder training and independent peer review for a project design’s code compliance. The Long Island Energy Storage Summit reaffirmed a shared commitment among public, private, and community leaders to ensure New York’s grid modernization enhances energy security and delivers practical, sustainable benefits for all New Yorkers.

“Battery storage is delivering meaningful benefits for Long Island, improving reliability, reducing electricity bills, and supporting energy growth,” said Bill Acker, Executive Director of the New York Battery and Energy Storage Technology Consortium. “Those benefits will only grow in the years ahead.
