Industrial Protection Services Wins Butland Family-Owned Business of the Year Award Balancing a family and a business is a challenging task that entrepreneurs face every day. Each year, the Small Business Administration (SBA) recognizes this by honoring successful family-owned small businesses throughout New England. This year, the Jeffrey Butland Family Owned Business of the Year award - acknowledging a small business with at least a 15-year track record that has passed ownership from one generation to another - was awarded to Industrial Protection Services. The family owned and operated company, Industrial Protection Services, LLC, was founded by the late Richard “Dick” Murphy and his wife Ellen Murphy. Dick and Ellen started the business in 1993 and grew it to be the foundation of IPS today. After his time in the service, Murphy entered the private sector and quickly realized something was missing. Recognizing the need for a professional distributor specific to the fire service, Murphy created Industrial Protection Services, LLC (IPS) located in Salem, New Hampshire. He realized through the creation of IPS how much he would be able to help address the unresolved needs of fire departments throughout New England. With arduous work, time, and many passionate people, IPS quickly became the area’s premier fire service equipment distributor, serving all of Massachusetts, Maine and New Hampshire. Today, IPS is the largest distributor and service provider of Scott Air-

Pak’s in all of New England. Recognizing their strength in providing on-site sales and service, they pioneered the first mobile Air-Pak service truck in New England. They now have five such vehicles and an impressive team of highly trained personnel on the road to efficiently serve their industry. In 2004, IPS created another first by designing a truck that would allow them to hydro-test SCBA cylinders at all of their customers’ locations. Not only were they the first company in 2004 able to provide this as a mobile service, but still today in 2023, they are honored to say we are the only company able to do it. Every day each member of the Industrial Protection Services, LLC family is constantly looking for ways to better serve and meet the demands of their customers. They are regularly broadening their product line to provide the New England area fire service with a “One Stop Shop.” They now carry, in addition to 3M Scott Fire and Safety, Holmatro Rescue Tools, FireDex gear, MSA/Cairns helmets, Rae Systems and BW Technologies gas detectors, Zodiac Milpro rescue boats, Akron Brass nozzles, Chemguard foam, and so much more. IPS promises to always guarantee a level of excellence unmatched in the industry. Firefighters Help Rescue Cow Trapped in Culvert Members of Middletown South Fire District (CT) and Haddam Volunteer Fire Company (CT) joined several local agencies and organizations to rescue a five-year-old cow that was trapped in a culvert under Route 9 near the Middletown/Haddam town line. A Middletown resident spotted the cow on October 28, 2023, and notified the City of Middletown Police Department. The bovine turned out to be “Blossom,” who escaped her pasture two months ago. The cow’s owners had since moved out of state. It was unclear how long Blossom was trapped in the concrete box culvert, that spans approximately 100 feet under both lanes of Route 9. The Bible Rock Brook flows through the culvert, which is located at the bottom of a steep ravine. At the time of her rescue, the water was about eightinches deep inside the culvert and flowing rapidly. The Durham (CT) Animal Response Team (DART) made an initial attempt to

Looking Back

Newington & Berlin - September 1976

rescue the cow on October 29, but the cold water and steep terrain made accessing the bovine difficult. On October 30, crews from Haddam Fire, Middletown South Fire District, and the Connecticut Department of Agriculture’s Animal Control Unit assisted DART in the effort. While teams were able to access the culvert, the uncooperative cow was inaccessible. On October 31, a team from Tufts Veterinary Field Service joined rescue efforts and sedated the cow with a tranquilizer dart. Once Blossom was sedated, a team worked in the brook to strap and secure her to a flexible sled. On land, firefighters used a 5:1 hauling system with a belay to slowly lift the Blossom up the ravine. Veterinarians evaluated the cowand noted she only had a few scrapes on her legs. Blossom has since been placed at a new farm in Killingworth. - Fire News photo by Olvia Drake

The event was a great success, bringing riders from across New England, and beyond, to enjoy the 66mile scenic ride which brought riders to several of Cape Cod’s pristine beaches. As a way to give back to those in need, and honor Wally, proceeds from this year’s ride were donated to Chatham Firefighter Vance Bates and his wife Adrian. Firefighter Bates was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2022 and was unable to work while he was undergoing treatments. During Vance’s battle with cancer, his wife Adrian suffered a hemorrhagic stroke in late 2022. With Adrian hospitalized and unable to work while working at her rehabilitation, the family was left with bills piling up. Fire and Iron MC Station-32 was happy to recently present Vance and Adrian a check from the proceeds of Wally’s Wild Ride at his firehouse in Chatham. - Fire News photo by Pat Travers

A small reception was held to recognize and thank Commissioner Garant at the Lake Street station that was well attended by family, current and retired firefighters, fire commissioners, city officials and friends. Commissioner Garant made a very historic Nashua Fire Rescue memorabilia donation to the department. Several years ago the town of Hamilton (MA) disbanded the position of deputy chief. The former position (which consisted of 4 members ranking as deputy chief) was eliminated via attrition. Chief Ray Brunet has recommissioned the deputy’s position, which is now a one-man assignment. The position is a day-job, with nights on-call. Brunet is pleased to announce that the position was filled by Dan Sullivan. Sullivan did 26 years on the job of (neighboring) Wenham Fire, and leaves with great memories. The plan is for Deputy Sullivan to be promoted to chief-of-department in a few years when Chief Brunet retires. Congratulations and good luck, Dan. - Fire News photo by Glenn Preston

TONIE’S FUND CONCERT FUNDRAISER

In emergency services, everyone sees fire trucks, ambulances, or police cars on the scene, and they may even assume that this is the entire complement of personnel we have. But many of us have behind-the-scenes workers who allow our first responders to do their jobs. They might be the organization’s secretary, the person who cleans the station, or the financial committee chairman. Members who do not respond to calls, but we may be lost without them. Tonie Gentile was one of those members. Tonie grew up in emergency services with her entire family serving in the local fire department. So, when her time came, Tonie finished her Firefighter 1 and EMT certifications. The firehouse is where our relationship began. Eventually getting married and having a child, Tonie gave up on responding to calls, becoming that behindthe-scenes person, making sure multiple ambulances were available to respond to calls for help. Working for the local EMS agency and an Emergency Services Consulting Company, Tonie worked with emergency providers in over 14 states, ensuring they had what was needed when the tones dropped. Unfortunately, in July of 2022, after several weeks of not feeling well, Tonie went to

the doctor and received the devastating news that no family ever wants to hear. Breast Cancer. For whatever reason, Tonie had waited too long to reach out for help, and the

cancer had spread. She was immediately started on new cancer treatments in the hopes that she could prolong her life, but in

the end, the cancer was too entrenched. Tonie lost her battle in only seven months. Tonie had supported Emergency Services since she was a child, and now it is our turn to support those who keep us in the field. Tonie’s Fund is a non-profit organization with two primary goals. First, send people to school to help fight this terrible disease and to provide the care required in the pre-hospital setting. Tonie’s Fund will support scholarships in the medical field to deserving students and develop partnerships with EMS Academy to educate more EMTs and Paramedics to respond to calls for help. Secondly, Tonie’s Fund will raise money to fight breast cancer and primarily focus on early detection. Being a first responder, we all know there is a time to celebrate our achievements. That is precisely what we intend to do with Tonie’s Fund. On March 10, 2024, Tonie’s Fund will present “Tonie’s Country Roads Concerts to College Tour,” an afternoon of live entertainment, food and prizes. Our first concert will be at The Truck Bar, 151 Webster Square in Berlin, Connecticut, from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Come support those who worked to keep us all responding and help us fight for the cure.
