hen I founded Fireclay Tile in 1986, I never imagined being where we are today. With a team of 50 employees across two factories manufacturing five different product lines, I couldn’t be more pleased with what our team has created. Together we have satisfied thousands of homeowners, architects, designers, and contractors with our beautiful, unique tiles.
Our goal when we started was simple: make beautiful tile for customers in the way they want it when they want it. Since then we have evolved to take a much more sustainable approach to our products and our operations. Now, 16 years after making that decision, we are a recognized leader in sustainable tile manufacturing. It’s the basis for everything we do and any new product that we launch. Our artisan tiles are made by hand in our two Northern California factories (San Jose and Aromas). This means we can quickly produce materials to fit any job specification. Our quality control is first-rate, and each product we ship is individually hand inspected by our experienced team of craftsmen. Our hands-on approach also allows us to execute custom projects quickly. Most Fireclay products are made using locally sourced pre and post-consumer recycled materials. We repurpose our own waste stream (water, tile left-overs, packing materials) and have a relentless focus on upcycling waste from other products (waste granite dust, glass bottles, porcelain, spent abrasives, window and solar glass, and reclaimed earth). DONATE TO CHARITY
1% of our Glazed Thin Brick sales are donated to a local charity. 5% of our overstock and seconds sales from our San Jose Boneyard is also donated to a charity chosen each quarter by our customers.
We offset our carbon shipments using CarbonFund. Our packaging uses recycled materials either purchased or sourced from our local environment. Our ceramic tiles are packed with reclaimed sawdust from a furniture manufacturer, and each pallet we use for shipping is salvaged from local companies.

LEED CERTIFICATION
Our products benefit clients’ commercial and residential projects applying for LEED certification by adding credits to their Materials & Resources portion of their credit checklist. Our Debris Series, Express Series, Crush, and Glazed Thin Brick recycled content exceeds the LEED certification criteria for MR credits 4.1 and 4.2. All Fireclay products can provide additional benefit if your project is in regional proximity to our manufacturing facility in Northern California (MR credit 5.1 and 5.2). These credit checklists apply to: single family homes, residential complexes, hotels and resorts, retail outlets and more seeking LEED certification. Certain products may also qualify for EQ Credit 4.1 for Low Emitting Materials.

HOW IT’S MADE Our Debris Series tile is custom manufactured for each and every order in an 18-step artisan process. Our materials consist of over 70% locally sourced recycled materials including waste glass, porcelain, granite dust and our own manufacturing waste. ARCHITECTURAL MOLDINGS ABOUT OUR MOLDINGS Over 70 different moldings are available. The standard length is six inches. Fourinch length molding pieces are also available and are priced the same as sixinch moldings. Eight-inch and twelve-inch moldings are special order items.
though we have done our best to give exact measurements on p. 88. If the pieces are to be used as a wainscot, the cap lip can be made smaller. When ordering, please specify your exact requirements. During the firing process the glaze will run and pool in the lower recesses on molding pieces, especially those with curved surfaces, causing some color variation. Debris and Vitrail Series glazes appear light and dark depending on the manner in which the glaze pools on each molding piece.
Each molding style has a letter or number designation. Molding cap pieces are available for most of the molding styles. The word “cap� after the molding means the piece can be used as a vanity or kitchen cap. The drop of the cap varies depending on the molding piece. The edge cap generally has a one-inch lip,

ROPES Hand-pressed ropes are available in either our Debris or Vitrail Series glaze colors. Due to the old-world techniques used to make the ropes, please expect variation in size and straightness. CUERDA SECA TILE FAQS WHERE CAN I USE CUERDA SECA TILE?
HOW ARE THEY PRICED?
Wall and floor applications, pools, fountains, stair risers, fireplaces, outdoor BBQ’s, hospitality and retail projects. Please note gloss colors may be slippery for flooring applications. Several of our glaze colors are acid sensitive, so when using Cuerda Seca for a pool or fountain please consult our glaze color specification in the back of the catalog to identify the most appropriate colors.
We offer a tiered pricing structure for our Cuerda Seca’s based on the detail of the pattern. Each pattern is labeled 1 (least expensive) to 3 (most expensive) to identify its respective pricing tier.
WHERE + HOW ARE CUERDA SECA TILE MADE? We make our Cuerda Seca tile in our Aromas, California factory using either our Debris or Vitrail series clay bodies as the base. When an order is placed, bisqued tile (clay tile that has been fired once to create a hard, durable body) is screen-printed with the chosen Cuerda Seca patterns, using a black wax resist to prevent glazes from running. After the pattern is screened onto the clay body, the glaze colors are then applied. Upon completion of the painting, the tiles are fired, packed and shipped.
CAN I USE MY OWN DESIGN? Yes, you absolutely can. For this you will want to bring your design ideas into your local dealer and we can help you translate the designs into custom screens so that we can create your unique design. (Additional fees apply.)
CUERDA SECA HANDPAINTED TILE
WHAT ARE THE AVERAGE LEAD TIMES? The average lead time is 4 weeks for most all of our ceramic tiles; the average lead time for Cuerda Seca orders tend to be about 4 weeks. For larger orders however, lead times can be up to 6-8 weeks. Please call to inquire at the time of ordering about current lead times.
HOW DURABLE ARE THE CUERDA SECA TILES FOR INDOOR AND OUTDOOR USE? Our ceramic products are fired at a very high temperature to ensure the highest quality and durability which makes our tiles suitable for both indoor and outdoor applications. Whether you choose to have your Cuerda Seca design on our Debris Series or Vitrail Series clay body, our tiles are frost resistant but NOT frost proof. Both series are suitable for outdoor installations in warmer climates but not colder climates.
WHICH GLAZES CAN I USE FOR MY DESIGN? When choosing your glazes for your custom colorway using the Debris Series tiles, it is important to use only non-engobe glazes. Any Vitrail Series color is available. Vitrail and Debris colors cannot be mixed.
CUERDA SECA STANDARD COLORWAYS These colorways were developed based on Debris Series glaze colors that we feel complement each other well. They are featured below and include Mediterranean (top row), Tuscan (center row), and Peacock (bottom row). Like all of our glazes, the standard colorways are lead-free. They are not stocked, but samples are almost always immediately available.

FLOREZA MURAL The Floreza patterns are original designs by Fireclay Tile. We wanted to create a horizontal border that could blend into various vertical points whenever needed. The medallion pots can be inserted into the medallion border at any place and the floral tops can be an additional 6”, 12”, 18”, 24”, 36” high. We have an extension pattern which allows the vine to continue in 12” increments. The choice of colorway determines the design style of the Floreza Series.

RAISED MULTICOLOR Our Raised Multicolor Decoratives are hand-pressed by Fireclay artisans. A press is used to create either a raised outline or an embossed pattern so tiles are consistent in appearance. We then handpaint each individual tile. The raised clay outline keeps the different glaze colors from running together during the kiln firing process. Raised Multicolor Decoratives are produced with our Debris and Vitrail Series clay body and glaze colors. Full-size printable Paint Sheets can be found for each of our available designs online at fireclaytile. com. Color combinations can be customized for your individual project, and custom tile design options are also available.

RAISED & RELIEF: OUR DECORATIVES ARE PRESSED INTO TWO VARYING STYLES Relief tiles are three-dimensional sculpted tiles. Each piece is individually hand pressed into a plaster mold. Because of the old-world techniques used in making the relief tiles, they often vary slightly in size and squareness. Raised Decoratives are hand-pressed tiles that have either a raised outline or an embossed pattern. A press is used so the patterns are more consistent in appearance. Raised patterns usually have a low background and the design (noted by the black outline in the line drawing) is “raised.� In general, Relief tiles have a higher, more sculpted relief and can have several heights and depths when compared to our Raised pattern tiles.

RUBBED FINISH Many of our relief decoratives are available with a “rubbed” finish where we actually rub off the top layer of glaze to reveal the Debris Series (terracotta) or Vitrail Series (white) clay body beneath. This gives a dual color appearance of the clay body in the foreground with the glaze color in the background. Rubbed finish is available with or without clear glaze overlay.

We reserve the right to introduce changes and modifications as required over time. Every attempt has been made to choose images that best portray our products; variations in filming, lighting, and color reproduction cannot be avoided. Nothing beats seeing our products in person, and we encourage you to visit one of our dealers or our San Jose, CA Factory Showroom.

You can order Fireclay Tile directly from us or through a network of dealers in the U.S. Visit our showroom in San Francisco, CA, or our Factory Showroom in San Jose, CA. Please visit fireclaytile. com for more information on purchasing our products. We recommend ordering 10% extra material to cover installation requirements. Add-ons are subject to standard lead times and other potential set-up charges. Due to the handcrafted nature of our tiles, shapes, and colors, please expect variation in both size and color. We recommend seeing a color sample before placing your order. There is a set-up fee for orders under a certain size to account for the time and materials needed to “set-up” your order.

Lead times range from 1 to 6 weeks. Please call to inquire about current lead time, as it may vary depending on the order and how busy our factory is. Please consult our chart below for more specific lead time information. Rush jobs are available for an additional fee.
Orders placed directly through Fireclay Tile require a signed contract and 50% deposit for an order to be processed. Payment is due in full prior to release of the order, including any additional shipping and handling charges. Prices are F.O.B. factory, including any additional sales tax. Once production has begun, no refunds can be issued. No returns will be accepted due to the custom nature of each unique order.

Orders are shipped by either package service or freight depending on weight. A shipping quote can be provided at time of purchase. Materials are shipped either from our San Jose (95110) or Aromas (95004) location depending on the actual materials ordered. An additional $12 per pallet fee will apply.

SIZE & SHAPE VARIATION Our ceramic tile shrinks in the production process across runs of tile, and you can expect variation in size of 1/16-1/8". Our Vitrail Series sizes are smaller than our Debris/Express Series. Our Crush is hand-molded, meaning variation in size may occur as well. Fireclay tile refers to tile sizes in nominal measurements in our catalog and website. Please use this guide to refer to the actual physical size of field and specialty field sizes across our product lines, as actual physical size varies from nominal size. Not all of our tile sizes are modular with themselves or with other sizes or with the other series we offer. If your design uses more than one size be sure they will work together with a recommended grout spacing. We did design the Crush line to be close-to-modular with the Debris Series. We do not recommend mixing Debris and Vitrail tiles in patterns. Please note that due to shrinkage not all of our decorative tiles are modular with similarly sized field tile.
GROUT SPACING We recommend a minimum 1/8" grout line for smaller sizes, 3/16" for medium sizes and 5/16” for large sizes. The closer the grout spacing the more you will see any tile irregularities. Please refer to our installation instructions at fireclaytile.com for more information on grout joints for each product.

ACID SENSITIVITY Fireclay glaze colors marked “yes’’ are acid sensitive. We do not recommend these colors for pools or backsplash areas.
CRAZING Certain tiles may craze over time, meaning small surface cracks may develop that may lead to discoloration. Crazing is part of the inherent beauty of our tiles.
FLOORING All Fireclay Tile products are suitable for floors. Our products are suitable for both residential and commercial flooring applications, though for commercial applications it is best to consult us regarding your specific project. Generally matte glazes are preferred for floors, though the most important factor is tile size, as smaller tiles result in more grout lines which provide slip resistance.
ADDITIONAL FLOORING Fireclay Tile also offers a grit and abrasive "sand-like" application to our glaze colors to make tiles more slip resistance. Additional charges apply.
COLOR VARIATION Fireclay Tile produces over 200 different colors. Variation must be allowed for in all cases due to the nature of Fireclay Tile's hand mixing and hand-glazing processes. We feel these characteristics only add to the natural beauty and unique quality of our products. We have rated our colors V1 (least variation) through V4 (most variation) to help identify individual color characteristics.
