About Fireclay Tile Fireclay Tile is the leading ceramic tile company using recycled materials and sustainable manufacturing practices. We make the highest quality, durable and beautiful hand-made ceramic materials using “old world” methods that are unique, affordable, and “green.” We are based in San Jose, CA and manufacture our products in our factory in Northern California. Fireclay Tile manufactures a full line of field and trim tiles, along with an extensive catalog of decorative tiles and architectural details. Tiles are extruded or hand-molded from clays consisting of recycled materials (Debris Series), unprocessed stoneware clays (Vitrail Series), giving our products a truly natural look with lifelong durability. For the greatest strength and consistency, we fire our tiles at over 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit without significant deformation (some color variation may occur). Glazes are mixed in-house and never contain any lead material. Our factory is day-lit and open-air for ventilation. We recycle all of our water and our manufacturing waste such as glazes and clays are almost 100% re-used. Our Products Debris Series Recycled Tile (p. 7): Made of 62% recycled content (25%

History Fireclay Tile was established in 1986 by four partners with over 50 years of experience in the design and production of beautiful ceramic tiles. Paul Burns, Fireclay’s Founder Chief Ceramicist, has been the owner and president of Fireclay Tile since its inception. Paul first started making tiles with his uncle, Ross Chichester, the past president of Stonelight Tile, when he was only 10 years old. Paul would work many Saturday’s and every summer growing up, learning all aspects of handmade tile production from extrusion to glaze formulating to kiln firing. By age 15, Paul was so skilled that Stonelight customers would specifically ask for his help in creating their tile. Since founding Fireclay, Paul has devoted his life to finding more sustainable ways to make tile, focusing on everything from the most sustainable manufacturing processes to the incorporation of recycled content into his materials. Today, Fireclay Tile is the leading tile company using recycled materials and sustainable practices, employing over 25 employees in the United States.

Manufacturing
Ma n u f a c t u r i n g P r o c e s s Raw Materials: We use many local waste materials in our products because we believe re-use and up-cycling is important for the environment and makes long term good business sense. Our Debris Series Recycled Tile features over 60% waste materials including post-consumer baghouse dust from the recycling of curb-side glass bottles and pre-consumer baghouse dust from a neighboring granite quarry.
Extruding Field Tile: Our field tiles and many of our trims and moldings are mixed, extruded, and each tile is hand inspected as they come off the line. Our factory is day-lit, and we re-use almost all of our waste water and waste glaze and clay materials by putting it back into our Debris Series clay body.
Decorative Pieces: Relief tiles are each hand pressed by our skilled artisans using Fireclay’s hand sculpted molds. Our unique Raised Decorative tiles are created using proprietary pressing techniques.
Glazing: All of our tiles are glazed by our expert artisan glazers. We mix all of our own 232 standard glaze colors, and can create custom glazes to order. Fireclay was one of the first tile manufacturers to remove lead from its glazes and we take our glaze technology and consistency extremely seriously.
Firing: We use natural gas to fire our tiles in both a roller hearth and envelope kiln, and smaller electric kilns for certain decorative pieces and Cuerda Seca tiles. Our tiles are fired at a high temperature ensuring both high quality and durability. Upon completion all tiles are inspected by our Quality Control Department.

6 COLORS We love color! We have developed a large color palette of glazes to allow customers a wide range of choices. Our glazes are developed by us, and each of our glazes use natural materials and are lead free. Our glaze masters are able to create custom colors when necessary. Standard Colors

Our Debris and Vitrail Series each boast 112 standard colors. These colors range in richness and color variation, and are specified by either a gloss or matte finish and Varition Rating of V1-V4. We recommend ordering samples for V3 & V4 glazes. Our Debris Series colors tend to be more earthy and craftsmen. Some of our Debris Series colors feature an additional “engobe” covering which produces a translucent and crackled finish. Our Vitrail Series features 96 crackled glaze colors that are crisp, vibrant, and classic as well as 16 Velvet Matte glaze colors. Patine

Rubbed Technique

Our Cuerda Seca (p. 22) and many of Raised (p. 33) Decorative pieces are available in multicolor finishes. The Vitrail Series comes as small as 1x1 and as large as 6x6. Note: Sizes are not always modular. Please check with us if you are doing a pattern. Moldings
Molding and Molding Caps Over 70 different moldings are available. The standard length is six inches. Four inch molding pieces are also available and are priced the same as six-inch moldings. Eight inch and twelve inch moldings are special order items, please call for availability and lead time. Each molding style has a letter or number designation. Molding cap pieces are available for most of the molding styles. The word “cap” after the molding means the piece can be used as a vanity or kitchen cap. The drop of the cap varies depending on the molding piece. The edge cap generally has a one-inch lip, though we have done our best to give exact measurements. If the pieces are to be used as a wainscot, the cap lip can be made smaller. When ordering, please specify your exact requirements. Outside 90-degree corners (OC), stop ends and picture frame corners (PFC) are available in all molding styles, see previous page. A layout drawing may be necessary to communicate the exact type of picture frame corner required. During the firing process the glaze will run and pool in the lower recesses on molding pieces, especially those with curved surfaces, causing some color variation. Debris and Vitrail glazes appear light and dark depending on the manner in which the glaze pools on each molding piece. Pricing for corner pieces is 50% more than corresponding molding/trim pieces.

Ropes
Ropes Rope decoratives are individually hand-pressed in a plaster mold. Due to the old world techniques used in making the ropes, they vary is size and straightness. Available also in caps, which can be used for a kitchen counter top or bathroom vanity. Rope caps are priced at 50% more than the rope piece price. All ropes are available in Debris and Vitrail clay bodies also in rubbed glaze styles. During the firing process the glaze will run and pool in the lower recesses, creating lighter and darker areas on each piece.

The Floreza patterns are original designs by Fireclay Tile. We wanted to create a horizontal border that could blend into various vertical points whenever needed. The medallion pots can be inserted into the medallion border at any place and the floral tops can be an additional 6”, 12”, 18”, 24”, 36” high. We have a 2 piece extension pattern which allows the vine to continue in 12” increments. The choice of colorway determines the design style of the Floreza Series.

Relief D e c o r a t i v e T i l e Relief tiles are three-dimensional sculpted tiles. Each piece is individually hand pressed into a plaster mold. Because of the old world techniques used in making the relief tiles, they often vary slightly in size and squareness. The decorative cap pieces vary the most due to their complexity. In general, the tiles have a higher, more sculpted relief and can have several heights and depths when compared to our raised pattern tiles. Stop pieces, out corners and picture frame corners are available in most designs. Relief tiles are offered in Debris, Vitrail and Rubbed. The glaze runs off high relief areas and pools in the background sometimes creating a many-toned effect.

63 Fireclay Product and Ordering Notes Location: Fireclay Tile’s headquarters are located in San Jose, CA (95110). Our manufacturing facility is located 40 miles south in Aromas, CA (95004). Commitment to Sustainability and Employees: We strongly believe in a commitment to our environment and our employees in everything we do. We try to use locally sourced recycled waste materials in manufacturing whenever possible, and we pay our factory workers a fair living wage or greater. Manufacturing and Materials: We manufacture 100% of our Debris Series Recycled Tile, Vitrail Series Handmade Tile, and glaze almost all of our Claymonde Ceramic Sheets in our day-lit factory. We try hard to reuse almost all of our water and waste material. All product is packed in recycled boxes using recycled sawdust as protective fill. Sizes: Handmade tile size can vary, and all sizes listed in our catalog are measured for the Debris Series, though the Vitrail Series may be slightly smaller due to increased shrinkage during firing. Field tile is approximately 3/8� thick. Color Variation: Color, shade and finish variation can be expected. We have graded each Debris and Vitrail glaze color V1 to V4 to represent the extent of possible variation. We recommend that you request a sample prior to placing your order, and that you also understand that finished orders may vary slightly from samples. Lead Times: Lead times average 4 weeks. Please call to inquire about current lead time, as lead times may vary depending on the order. Inspecting and Installation: Fireclay Tile does not install tile. All products should be inspected immediately upon receipt for damage, breakage, or missing tile. Any issues must be brought to our attention before installation and within 30 days of receipt of material. No claims recognized after installation. Cleaning and Maintenance: Use a non-abrasive, non-acidic household cleaner. We do not recommend using an abrasive cleaning pad when cleaning tile. We recommend sealing the Vitrail Series tile at least 1x per year (Fireclay applies an initial coat on all Vitrail Series tile). The Debris Series does not need to be sealed.
