The Syston Town News was created 21-years-ago this issue by Alan Collins, who sadly passed away in November 2015, with Judith Wilkins, Mick and Lynn Westwood (Thurmaston Times) and later Geoff Wilkes. In 2004, Christine Gregory took over as Owner/Editor and we bought it in 2009.

We are proud to continue being Syston’s only dedicated newspaper and here are just a few pictures of past front covers showing how we have changed in 21 years!

Wreake Valley Academy Children in Need Our annual children in need event started with a letter from the BBC to congratulate us on being ‘one of our top school fundraisers for BBC Children in Need in 2016’ and to ‘say a big THANK YOU to the staff, pupils and wider school community for your loyal support offered to the charity’.

By virtue of this acknowledgement, we were also allowed to use their special logo for promoting our future events, and we received a certificate to display in school.

Staff and students worked really hard together to put on activities that would raise as much money as possible.

This year, as well as football tournaments throughout the week, a nail bar and tuck shop, a group of Year 10 boys decided to use our rowing machines to ‘row the channel’ all in aid of this wonderful cause.

Splat the Teacher proved as popular as ever and we had the most amazing cakes donated by parents for our bake sale as well as some spotacular efforts from students. Our raffle was a great success and we would like to thank the BBL for their donation of tickets for a family of four to the Basketball League Final Match at the Barclaycard Arena. As always, the event finished on Friday afternoon with the Staff vs Student football match.

Students paid £1 each to watch this sporting highlight.

This year the stakes were higher than ever as the new Charity Cup was up for grabs for the winners. Thanks to some very charitable play by the Sixth Form students, the game ended evens with a 5-5 draw. After years of losing, the staff finally triumphed and won on penalties, 19 – 18.

All of our students’ behaviour was excellent throughout the week and they took part in all the events in the manner befitting of both the school and the charity event. We would like to thank them and their parents for their fabulous support.

A special thanks goes out to the Charity Council who give up many of their lunch and break times to ensure the occasion was a success.

We raised over £2100 and money is still coming in.

Charnwood Nursery & Pre-school Visit Hadrian House Inspired by Channel 4’s documentary, ‘Old People’s Homes for 4 Year Olds’.

Children from Charnwood Nursery & Pre-school have been making regular visits to elderly residents at Hadrian House.

The documentary was based on a scheme in America that has been running for over 25 years, bringing fouryear-olds and older people together.

The goal was to see whether, by playing and interacting with the youngsters, older people’s physical, social and emotional well-being can improve and even add years to their life.

The experiment shows the transformative

power that simply being around the children has for the older people.

Our visits to Hadrian House began on 5th October and since then, relationships between the children and residents have flourished. Together, the children and older people have made wreaths for the Remembrance Day, fed the squirrels, played balloon toss and danced!

A video that we posted on our Facebook page on the 4th November has received over five thousand views.

Subsequently we have seen posts and comments on social media pages that other local settings have started similar schemes. We can already see the benefit to the residents of Hadrian House and for our children and we hope that many more nursery and preschool settings will establish links with their local care homes.

Thank you to everyone who has brought in donations whatever the weather and continued to donate some lovely items to our little shop.

We would also like to thank our customers who make it possible for us to raise funds for Cauda Equina Syndrome, a spinal injury charity whose only shop is here in Syston.

Co-ordinator Role with Syston Charity About Us: Age Concern Syston are a registered charity operating in Syston and district area of Leicestershire, who provide an information and advice service to the elderly.

We run a disabled minibus which we use to organise outings and also hire to small groups within the area. We also run three day care groups and a respite care group. Along with five paid members of staff we are supported by a group of dedicated volunteers who help with many aspects of our organisation.

The job role: We are looking for a caring, friendly and self-motivated individual who enjoys a challenge to work 12 hours per week, with the possibility of increased hours in the future.

The successful candidate will also have excellent communication skills, a warm, approachable manner and ideally someone with previous experience of working with elderly people or in a customer service position.

We are also looking for someone with experience using MS office software, although some training will be given to the right candidate.

Other than providing an information and signposting service the role will involve managing a team of volunteers, arranging outings using our disabled minibus, making sure the minibus is properly maintained at all times, organising rotas for drivers, tea ladies and general administration work.

The Merton Primary School Receives Certificate

On 13th October the Chairman of Syston Town Council, Cllr P. Henry, visited the school assembly to present them with their framed certificate from East Midlands in Bloom, our picture above shows him presenting it to

one of the children involved in the garden project.

The children in years 5 and 6 had made soup from some of the produce as well as beetroot and chocolate brownies! The school kitchen had also been able to use some of the vegetables grown at the school.

Declan’s Diary

I'm hoping this year he will get his magical Christmas and that 2018 will be his best year yet.

NEW BARKBY WI

As we pack up all of Declan's medical equipment and say goodbye to the staff on Ward 15 at the Glenfield hospital, a wave of relief passes through me, Declan had beat pneumonia again.

It is two weeks since he left the hospital now and although he hasn't been well enough to go back to college, he's been reasonably stable.

So now my thoughts turn to Christmas.

I'm increasingly aware every year that it may be the last, so endeavour to make it as magical as possible.

It's so difficult to buy presents for Declan, his shoes never get worn out, his clothes never fray and all he really wants is......love.

Declan wants, what most people want when they get into their thirties, love, a partner to see past his wheelchair and embrace his warm, kind nature.

However, at only nineteen, this seems near impossible. Something so many people take for granted, a first date, a first kiss, meals out, cosy nights in, holding hands, telling someone that you want to spend the rest of your life with them, holding your first-born.

These are all things that Santa can't bring, that money can't buy, that I can

Tellers (from Barkby & Beeby WI) were Mrs K. Buck and Mrs J. Law. After business matters had been attended to; including reports of the minutes of the annual meeting 2016, officers were thanked for their efforts to keep the institute’s meetings run smoothly.

Afterwards, there was social time, with a bring-and-buy table of items.

The competition was won by Mrs V. Cobb with a New Barkby WI tablecloth. The raffle prizes were won

by Mrs D. Haynes and Mrs A. Montague. The tea hostesses were Mrs B. Gamble and Mrs G. Baker.

The following week (add date) to celebrate the Institute’s 92nd Birthday, members enjoyed a meal at Park Hill Golf Club, near Seagrave.

The next meeting will be held on Wednesday 6th December, this will be a combined meeting and Christmas Party. Visitors are always welcome to attend, Syston community centre at 7.30pm.

This month in the garden This is our monthly gardening feature by our own local expert and regular panellist on “Down to Earth”.

Let me first of all mention BBC Radio Leicester who on November the 8th celebrated its 50th birthday. Radio Leicester was the first local radio station to be opened in the UK. At that time the station organisers ,Maurice Ennals and Ken Warburton, thought it would be a good idea to introduce a gardening program, so the late Geoff Amos was asked if he could do a quarter of an hour during the first Saturday. Geoff jumped at the chance and the program was so popular it went to half an hour. Geoff thought it would be a good idea to get gardeners to phone in with questions and as a consequence Radio Leicester became the first radio station in the whole of the country to have a live phone-in programme.

Geoff decided he would like a panel of gardening experts to help out with some of the questions and at that time, some 49 years ago I had designed a 60 x 20 feet (18 x 6m) Japanese garden for the Abbey Park show in Leicester. As I stood in the marquee giving advice about the garden and the plants used in it, Geoff Amos came into the tent with what looked like a small suitcase, this was a reelto-reel tape recorder. He said “I like your garden and you seem to know your stuff, how would you like to give advice on BBC Radio Leicester’s ‘Down to Earth’ radio programme?”.

Now 49 years on, I still turn up to give advice and enjoy meeting gardeners throughout the county on a Sunday from 12.05pm until 1.00pm. Just tune

in to 104.9 fm and enjoy a really good ‘Down to Earth’ gardening program.

This year I have found the growth of most plants has been exceptional and it is not only the branches and stems which have been longer, but many of my tree leaves have been larger and sappier. This has caused the autumn foliage of many trees and shrubs to be not only so colourful, but the leaves have turned brown and started to fall very quickly. Even the large tree of Crataegus x lavalleri ‘Carrieri’ at the rear of my garden, whose glossy leaves usually start to turn brown and fall during December, have this year turned brown during the second week in November. The hardy Fuchsia ‘Mrs Popple’ still has a lovely show of red and purple flowers and leaves that are still green. This year, due to a frost free spring there has been a very good set of fruit and berries.

When Vi and myself visited my daughter Louise and her hubby James, we saw a mini standard of Cotoneaster x suicicus ‘Juliette’, pictured here, that was massed with orange-red berries. This makes a very attractive miniature weeping evergreen tree whose small green leaves have

a broad creamy margin.

Having lost their leaves, many of our native trees can look dismal in a winter’s landscape. However, many of the trees which originate from cold or temperate parts of Asia and North America have attractive trunks and new branches. The Himalayan birch, Betula utilis, has provided us with a number of forms with almost white trunks, there is a tree of this growing in the grass behind the bus shelter, close to the old Police station on Melton road. I also have a tree of this in my garden together with the form ‘China Rose’ whose young bark is a pinkish-bronze colour. Many of the Japanese maple trees have green trunks that have brilliant white stripes running down them. One of the most outstanding is Acer davidi and this has been hybridised with the North American Acer pensylvanicum to create one of the finessed small trees for any garden as its trunk is a pink shade with white lines, but one of its most outstanding attractions is its current years branches that during November suddenly turn a bright red, see our picture above, and this colour lasts until the new growth starts during the following spring.

A fox or squirrel has, for the last few weeks, been chewing holes in the side of my shed so now I need to get five or six 10 feet (3m) long planks to replace the ones chewed.

Income Protection – Have You Heard of It? Income Protection…..it’s the one protection policy every working adult in the UK should at least consider, yet also the one that most of us don't have.

We insure our cars, our homes and our phones but most of us don’t insure the very thing that pays for these essentials……our income. When “Which?” asked the public, just 9% said they have some form of Income Protection, compared with 41% who have life insurance and 16% who have private medical insurance (PMI). Yet each year, close to a million people in the UK find themselves unable to work due to a serious illness or injury (ABI 2015).

Ask yourself, if you were to suffer a long-term illness or injury, would you be able to survive on your savings, or on the sick pay you get from work? If not, you’ll need some other way to keep paying the bills.

He has autism (non verbal) sensory processing disorder, ADHD, GDD and hypermobility.

The family who live in Rothley have been fundraising for some time now to raise funds for Garrat to have his forever best friend Autism Assistance Dog through Autism Life Dogs.

Garrat finds it very difficult to go out into the community with lots of anxiety, unpredictable behaviour and he is self harming.

He has no awareness of danger and puts himself in dangerous situations and has to wear a safety helmet. He goes out into the community in his wheelchair. He loves animals and really connects with them, especially dogs and cats.

To have a forever best friend to help Garrat, to comfort Garrat, and to be able to go everywhere with Garrat will benefit him so much and the Assistance Dogs help so much.

With just £2000 left to raise, hopes are high and Garrat’s family have high hopes that the end of the fundraising is in sight.

Ladies Friendship Circle On October 23rd we celebrated our harvest festival.

We enjoyed a delicious harvest supper prepared by our own members. We had home made soup, cheese and biscuits and amazing homemade cakes.

To follow this, several poems with harvest and autumn themes were read.

A wonderful evening of laughter and fellowship.

Margaret Proud The speaker at our meeting on November 13th was Julie Ede, her subject, ‘Wallis Simpson’.

Whilst most of us are familiar with the story of Wallis and the Duke of Windsor, the speaker had obviously researched the facts more and we were treated to a very interesting account of their friendship and subsequent marriage.

The speaker began her talk with the childhood of Wallis and she went through Wallis’s earlier marriages and her meeting with The Duke of Windsor.

We were surprised to learn that Leicestershire was one of their meeting places where they also had very grand parties. The speaker illustrated her talk with film of their lives and she also showed many of the pieces of jewellery which the Duke bestowed on Wallis.

The evening ended with the usual tea and biscuits and we were all reminded of details of the forthcoming Christmas Tree Festive to be held the last week-end in November.

Doreen Payne Last Night of the Proms The main themes of the evening were celebrating the 100th birthday of Dame Vera Lynn and the music of Glenn Miller.

The evening began with a rousing rendition by the Syston Brass Band of

the Dambuster’s March which had everyone smiling and humming along.

The concert continued with more pieces by the band along with songs sung by soloists Sue Smith and Mark Hopkinson, accompanied by Matthew Jones on the piano.

During the interval wine and soft drinks were served before the concert continued; opening the second half with the rousing Liberty bell. During this second half a group of the young people Emma and Charlotte Woodward, Brandon Iley, Ben Morgan and Christian Adair played some jazz pieces for which they received great applause.

The end was, of course, the traditional Proms ending with Land of Hope and Glory and the National Anthem with lots of waving flags and enthusiastic singing from the audience.

‘Thank you’ presentations were made to the several participants and also to Felicity Austin who had worked very hard to organise the concert which raised £1060 for church funds.

We would like to thank local businesses which helped with publicity and sold tickets for this event.

Stronger Probably the most talented actor working today (according to me anyway) is back with a tearjerking drama.

Jake Gyllenhaal stars in Stronger which tells the inspiring real life story of Jeff Bauman, an ordinary man who captured the hearts of his city and the world to become a symbol of hope after surviving the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing. The gifted Tatiana Maslany is on hand to co-lead with David Gordon Green doing the ‘shot calling’. Stronger has been picking up great reviews of late and looks set to be a gate crasher this awards season.

A small delegation from Syston Twinning visited our twinned town of Deville les Rouen for the weekend of Friday 10th November in order to be present at the towns Remembrance day on Saturday 11th November, a day that is a bank holiday throughout France.

The day was unfortunately a wet one, the first that any of us present could remember.

However, we along with many residents paraded from the Marie on the Route de Dieppe in the centre of Deville to the cemetery which is situated up a very steep hill and as we marched round the winding road in the rain, it made the day even more poignant.

As always we were spoilt by our French hosts and enjoyed both eating out and at home with them.

A lot of the conversations revolved around the current unsettling events across the world including UK’s decision to leave the EU, the sense of concern and disappointment was obvious. It was apparent that our friends feel that it is a very unsettling time, not just France but throughout Europe.

However, we as a group will remain friends with our families in Deville les Rouen, it may be even more important to build links with people in France, who like ourselves just want to be able to travel, work and live in a peaceful world.

We organise social events throughout the year, to fund raise for our visits and to host our friends when they visit.

Syston Remembers The crowds turned out in Syston on Sunday 12th November to remember all those who lost their lives in the two World Wars and give us the freedom we have today. Also to remember those who have given their lives in active service since then.

The parade began in the Melton Road Car Park and made its way to the War Memorial in Central Park, where the two minutes silence was observed, hymns sung and names read out before the parade reassembled and marched back to the Melton Rd Car Park. There was a Church service held at St Peter and St Paul’s afterwards and refreshments at the Conservative club on High St. A selection of photographs here have been sent in by readers and more are on our website.

A big thank you to Syston Town Council’s Town Manager Catherine Voyce who worked with the local Royal British Legion Club and local businesses to enable this annual event to take place by providing marshals for the road closures.

A presentation was made to Diane when she was surprised by one of her ex-patients who travelled to Syston to add his congratulations.

Everything was donated and a huge raffle added to the final total raised of £2,733 which will be used to enhance the facilities at the Hope Unit.

Special Remembrance Book Now Online A Special Remembrance Book of Syston Soldiers who died During World War Two now online for all to access.

As you may already know, the Friends of St Peter and St Paul's Church, Syston spent two years collecting photos and information about the Syston servicemen and women who are commemorated on Syston’s local war memorial. The photos have now been used in a memorial book that forms a valuable historic document.

The Friends have also arranged for the

memorial book to be available on line on the church’s website. Just go to the main menu and click on ‘Book of Remembrance’.

The album was dedicated last year at the Remembrance Day service in the Parish Church and copies of the book are kept permanently in the church,the library, the Council offices and in the Methodist Church.

The Friends of the Church committee would like to thank all who have helped in any way with this important historic project.

With Christmas just around the corner, some of you will be buying up presents for your pets as well as friends and family!

Birstall and District Art Society held its 23rd Annual Exhibition on 4th and 5th November this year, which was formally opened by Cllr Ann Marshall, Chair of Birstall Parish Council.

Editor’s report on the Full Town Council Meeting held on Tuesday 24th October 2017 There were 14 Councillors (Cllrs), two County Councillors (CCllrs), two Police officers and one member of the public present.

The Reflection was read by Cllr P. Henry Chairman.

There were apologies from Cllrs H. Asmal, K. Asmal, J. Midgley, C. Dolan and M. Carnal.

The Chairman Cllr P. Henry welcomed the new Police Sergeant (Sgt)Chris Wharton to the meeting. Sgt. C. Wharton responded by giving some background to his time in the police and said that he has over 20 year’s experience with the last ten being as a Sgt. in community policing. He said he was still finding his feet as he joined the team three weeks prior to this meeting and once up to speed, he wants to be out and about.

There were two items tabled in the Chairman’s announcements & Communications. The first was the need to review standing orders to be in-line with national guidelines. The second point was that he would like members to get fully involved in discussions and ask questions before the meetings so they don’t turn up and state they don’t understand!

Charnwood Borough Council had asked if Syston would be holding a Holocaust Memorial on 7th January 2018.

Police presentation to Town/Parish councils Sept.17 - slide presentation, provided by Chief Constable Simon Cole.

Catherine Voyce went through the slides and members had copies to refer to. A key point shown on the slides was the number of police officers to cover the whole of Leicester(shire), the fact that government funding is continuing to be reduced and that now there is only one police officer for 601 members of the public. Other points shown referred to incidents that had occurred, an example of a solved crime and how they use every aspect possible including social media and mobile phones.

Police report PSCO Jo Freeman went through the report and explained that one group had been sentenced for the shop break-ins and now they dealing with a different group committing break-ins in Syston but that they are investigating. She spoke about the recent problem of vehicles being broken into over night by breaking small windows to get loose change, unfortunately they had no leads as yet.

She commented that a lot of vehicles are not locked properly and reminded everyone to check car doors before going into homes.

The police are trying to get the message across to ‘lock your car’!

County and Borough reports CCllr J. Poland reported on a new service called the Lightbulb Housing Support Service. This is a single contact service to help keep people in their own homes by providing access to health and safety for vulnerable people and adult social care, in the hope that it will help to avoid unnecessary hospital visits. It started on 2nd October and is bringing all services together into one place and they will help get the services vulnerable people require.

CCllr D. Slater reported on the Number 6 bus and has had direct discussion with the director of transport. The plan is for a Centre bus to do a detour around the Hobby Horse and an on-demand service to be available for the Goodes Lane area.

It will be a reduced service but at least something. He couldn’t give precise details of the plan and needs to see the final replacement route. See latest on page 18.

Cllr J. Branson said that it would help working people and schoolchildren if Centre bus will do the rush hour and then a two hour service. Laurie Needham’s petition was mentioned and CCllr D. Slater said he will receive the petition and take it to his meeting on the 22nd November.

Cllr S. Hampson reported on disability pay and what Charnwood Borough Council (CBC) are doing about it.

Cllr E. Vardy spoke about the technology group he is member of and the excellent response to an event they had planned for November. He also mentioned Loughborough’s fair and that it is one of the oldest in the country, this being it’s 796th year and is still very popular with families.

He also spoke about the surgeries the County and Borough Cllrs hold on 1st Saturday of the month and that last month 16 people turned up with a variety of concerns.

Cllr T. Barkley reported that CBC had retained its customer service award, which he felt showed they were getting things right. He then spoke about CBC’s Financial outlook the boundary review and Charnwood’s Sports awards. Since the has been told that local meeting the gymnast, Beatrice Hill, has been nominated for one of these awards.

Cllr K. Pacey said he had been unwell so little to report, just referred to one meeting of the licensing committee.

Recall Food Festival and Funtopia The council had received a request by a company to provide the above on Central Park and due to the closeness of the vote in committee there was a request to send this back for further discussion.

It was agreed to set up a panel to investigate the food festival further and bring back to council next month.

The other event Funtopia, which is a one day event with no charge to enter, and has craft stalls, rides etc, was agreed. A date in 2018 is yet to be decided upon.

Cllr E. Gill had requested to join development and amenities committees, these were accepted.

Horace Taylor Trust - councillors were reminded that a vacancy is still available on this board of trustees.

Officer to Council Surgery - a request had been made by the officers to provide monthly surgeries for councillors, agreed to go ahead and review in three months.

Leicester County Council (LCC) resolution to Act on New Road Layout After the public consultation recommendations were made to highways and CCllr D. Slater spoke to the director of highways to see if the pedestrian crossing could be moved.

In the discussion that followed it was agreed that in order to make statements that it is unsafe, evidence is needed to back out. A proposal was made for notices to be put on the town notice boards asking for residents to report any incidents they have been involved in.

LCC Big Society Meeting Chairman Cllr P. Henry and Mrs C. Voyce had attended this meeting and reported to council that the LCCs role is changing from delivering services to providing access to services. They will be devolving some services to parish/town councils, for example grass cutting and sign cleaning, and use the local community to provide the services.

CCTV Coverage in Syston PSCO J. Freeman reported that the centre is well covered but there’s a need to include one near the MACE shop by the railway station. This was referred to the Development committee to discuss.

New councillor Mrs E. Gill was welcomed and recorded that she is already booked onto training events.

The Town Managers report Mrs C. Voyce updated council on various activities that had been completed since the last full council including what the panels have been doing. See the Spotlight report in the November issue for more details.

LAST ORDERS – Ladies and Gentlemen I was at home settling down with just my third pint of the evening when my mind turned to the talk we’d had at Syston U3A a couple of days before.

Hollie Ind from AgeUK had talked to us about drinking when you’re getting on a bit, well, over 50 anyway. At first I’d thought, the cheek of it, fancy branding us a load of old boozers. We might be getting on a bit but that’s a bit much.

But what she’d said was really good. She was really positive and upbeat. What she said made a lot of sense, and we had a bit of fun as well. Made us think a bit.

Did I really need that 3rd pint? Well, at four bottles for £6 it was cheaper than at my local, ‘The Farmer’s Armpits’, or ‘The Dog & Crown’, and better than three for £5 at the local supermarket. Do you know, I never realised that alcohol’s cheaper now than it was 37 years ago. What else can you find that’s cheaper now than it was then? Amazing! And it’s so easy isn’t it, these offers are so tempting.

I enjoy a quiet drink, but Hollie said the danger is that at our age “an occasional tipple can turn into a daily routine” and that can’t be good for us, can it?

A drink’s all well and good but it’s drinking responsibly that’s important. What’s the recommended limit now?

Well, it’s difficult to be exact but she said it’s about six pints of beer or lager, or six glasses of wine. A week! A week? Blimey,

this is half my weeks ration, tonight. And I haven’t got to my 4th pint yet. Oh dear.

And I never knew there’s more alcohol in extra strong cider than in a double vodka.

In cider! It’s only apple juice isn’t it?

I was surprised to learn that drinking can affect my varicose veins, not in a good way. I knew that it can cause cancers and other horrid things, but varicose veins?

What about drinking and medication? At our age we’re probably all on some sort of tablets and potions and pills for one thing or another, I am. You may be an exception of course.

Hollie’s message that alcohol can affect medication in one way or another was a reminder. I’d read it on the back of my tablet box the other day. But it didn’t stop me buying those four bottles for £6.

The fun part of Hollie’s talk was looking through some special goggles that she passed around – they mimicked the effect of having drunk too much. No not staggering around, or the morning after problem, but the double vision, the wobbles, and the “I can’t quite make that out” feeling. Oh dear. And gone are the old days when the local police officer – didn’t we call them “Bobbies” in those days? – would help us into our car so that we could get home after a night at “The White Plough”.

I learnt a few other things as well, like black coffee won’t sober me up, it might give me a bit of a caffeine rush but I’ll still be over the limit as I was before. And drinking alcohol doesn’t help me sleep better - it’s a myth.

Another is that drinking water helps me to process alcohol quicker, get it out of my system – it doesn’t. It might keep me hydrated, stop me getting a hangover, but not a lot else.

She told us lots of other things as well like people aged 65 and over have the highest rate of drinking on five or more days a week, but the lowest rate of heavy drinking. And it takes an average adult one hour to process a unit of alcohol out of their system. But, as we get older that slows down, it stays with us for a lot longer so when we get up in the morning we still have alcohol in our system.

It wasn’t a lecture, we weren’t being warned off, just a ‘heads up’ - we came away more aware of the need to enjoy safe and sensible drinking.

Youngsters Share Matchday with Tigers

Young players from Syston RFC shared matchday with 10-time English champions Leicester Tigers as they made up the Guard of Honour to welcome the teams at Welford Road.

Tigers secured a bonus-point win

against Sale Sharks in Round 8 of the Aviva Premiership as the group from Leicestershire had the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of legends on the Welford Road pitch in front of a crowd of more than 20,000.

Phill Parker, a coach at Syston, accompanied the team onto the pitch and said: “Last year, we took part in the flag waving when Tigers played against Racing in Europe and the kids were very excited to be here again.

They played a match this morning and won, so everyone is in a great mood and looking forward to a great day out.”

Riverside Remembers Syston-based junior football club, Riverside Utd, paid their respects on Remembrance Sunday with both U11 teams taking wreaths along to their fixtures. The Kestrels were at home on the front field of Wreake Valley Academy vs Groby and the Falcons away in Hinckley.

Impeccable 2-minute silences were observed before the action got underway with both sides running out as winners.

Later in the day, players from both teams took the wreaths along to the war memorial at Central park.

End of Season Awards and Winter Nets At the end of another successful season
