Best Christmas Event Ever!

Syston Happy Ukelele Band & Singers The 2018 event was a real step into the unknown, for the first time in nine years the event would take place along Melton Road between the mini roundabout and Pet world.

The weather was very kind and the Facebook page was feedback on the amazing with everyone saying it was the best one yet and asking to keep it on the road in future.

The event panel would like to thank everyone who helped organise it, supported, helped, had a stall or performed on the day, including Santa and his helpers.

Syston Town Council Chairman; Cllr Paul Henry escorted her around the event. Here is hoping the 2019 event will be as spectacular and dare we say even better! One poster, not pictured, shows the names that will be used on the doors of the rooms located on the first floor. These rooms will be available to the community to hire for meetings, functions and groups.

Please call into the Pharmacie to book.

Each room will have its own theme, with the larger room having a Music and Film theme again from the 1950s. This will also be a vinyl room, so you can take along your own records to be played. It will also have two dart boards where the Pharmacie’s darts teams will play. At the moment they have a men’s team but invite any women to call in and sign up to form a women’s team.

The opening times of the Pharmacie are Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday 4pm to 11pm, Friday 3pm to 11pm, Saturday and Sunday 12noon to 11pm. They are closed on Mondays.

We wish them great success as they have brought something exciting and unique to our High Street. The feedback from other retailers, pubs and clubs is that they are benefiting from the increased visitors, stating that they have seen an increase in business and lots of new faces in their establishments since the Pharmacie opened, so Congratulations Dave and Bob, you are regenerating our High Street.

This amazingly interesting and unique bar opened on 20th December 2018 after about four years of trying to find the right premises in Syston.

The owners, Dave and Bob have created a very unusual Micro Pub outlet on High Street, Syston.

Dave said “I had this vision and Bob made it a reality.” They have travelled all over the country to collect the items that make this micro pub so unusual, buying items via Internet auction sites and antique shops, while they were in different parts of the country, they visited other micro pubs and noted the good points from those visited to help create this one.

The whole room displays items that would have been found in a 1950s Chemist.

These include cameras from the period, as chemists used to develop films. They also display dentistry items with a dental chair including ‘Cedric’ the skeleton!

After describing this amazing outlet, it would be very remiss to forget to mention that they specialise in real ale/craft beers and always have at least one local ale on tap. They also offer two lagers, two ciders as well as spirits and soft drinks.

Dogs are welcome with well behaved owners and water and treats are available for the four legged visitors.

Children with parents are also welcome up to 7pm.

Disabled customers are catered for with accessible facilities.

Dave said they have had a fantastic response from local residents and that the atmosphere is brilliant.

Dear editor, Through your newspaper I would like to alert the community to the effect on Syston of having the old Co-op Car Park administered by Euro Car Parks.

On the 9th November having a meeting in the Methodist Church, I drove into the car park, parked and approached the machines with my £1.50 in my hand to pay the charge. There was already a lady at the machine who was very distressed because one machine was labelled ‘out of order’ and the remaining machine was refusing to accept her money in spite of having correctly put in her registration number.

I then put in my registration number and was equally unable to put in the money, however hard I tried. A young mum and four friends who were intending to have lunch in Syston took one look at the machines’ failure and said “We are going.

I have been caught before. I think we will forget Syston and have lunch elsewhere.”

I should have listened to her!

Being trusting souls, the other lady and I each put a note on our dashboard stating that we were unable to pay because neither machine was working. We then went to our meeting.

Some weeks later I received a letter stating that I was being fined for nonpayment of the parking fee. I could pay £60 now; £100 if I failed to pay within fourteen days or be referred to a Debtors Agency; otherwise I could appeal. I then wrote to the Appeals Department, clearly stating that neither machine was working so I could not pay however hard I tried. I enclosed £1.50.

Just before Christmas I received a letter from Euro Car Parks rejecting my appeal, allegedly ‘After careful consideration’; and demanding £60 now; £100 later or the Debtors Agency. Their advice was that in such a situation the correct procedure is to

go to another machine. Can they not read English or is it a system to extort money with menaces from honest people?

As I was about to join my family for Christmas I paid £60. I will not park there again. The other lady has said, like the young mum and friends she will never come to Syston again. Seven people’s custom lost at one lunchtime, how many more have suffered a similar experience?

Not everyone owns a mobile phone, as apparently they have installed a notice saying pay by phone. Some people tried to ring and got an automated response so were unable to alert the company to the problem and no attendant was on site on Friday. has been told by residents The parking there on the Saturday, that there was an attendant present and he was trying to repair one of the machines as it wouldn’t print out tickets, and when asked by people parking what they should do, he took their money for the time they proposed to park and told them it would be ok. We don’t know how he recorded who paid him, but people who took his advice have since received a penalty notice from Euro Car Parks and when appealed have been told the appeal has been refused so have paid the £60 charge.

Was everyone watching how much I was taking from the buffet, how could I keep myself covered from leaving the sunbed to getting to the pool or if I was feeling very adventurous, the sea!

If you would like advice or are experiencing difficulty, social isolation, loneliness or simply need a listening ear or would like to meet new people, please call into our office where you will be welcomed by our friendly staff and volunteers: For general information or to book an appointment for our advice service please telephone or call into our office, which is open five mornings a week from 9.00am to 12.30pm.

Merton Group Our Merton Group is for people who are housebound and meet on the 2nd Monday of each month. Our leader organises a range of outings either for a pub lunch or a visit to many other interesting places.

Respite Care Group Once a month we organise a service for those who are caring for an elderly person. We provide a volunteer for one afternoon a month to sit with the carer’s loved one whilst the carer is taken out with the group.

With us now being a month into a new year, it seems inappropriate to describe our Christmas themed November demonstration in detail. However it was very enjoyable and provided by Jane Fox, with the title ‘Winter Wonderland’.

At the end, the stage was filled with a number of designs, in a variety of colours, but all with that seasonal sparkle.

This will be a momentous year for Roundhill Flower and Garden Club as we celebrate our 50th Anniversary in May. It is planned to have a demonstration by Lee Berrill, with tickets costing £10 for both club members and visitors. More information on this will be available in the coming months.

Also in May, the club is planning a coach trip to the Malvern Spring Show.

Tickets for this event cost £37 inclusive of travel and entrance to the show, with some spaces still being available at the time of publication.

Additionally, with the exception of our AGM in February which is closed to all but subscribed members, we have a full year of monthly demonstrations plus a garden visit, and visitors, at a cost of £5 per meeting, are very welcome.

Warning for Lettings Agents and Property Managers after Company Fined Lettings agents in Charnwood are being urged to ensure they are aware of their legal responsibilities after a business was fined by the Borough Council.

All lettings agents and property managers are required by law to be part of a government-approved redress scheme which helps resolve disputes between tenants and landlords.

Charnwood Borough Council discovered one letting agent in the borough was not part of a redress scheme in August. The offence carries a maximum fine of £5,000.

The company had been part of a scheme which had closed but it had failed to join another one.

However, after being contacted by the Council, the company signed up to a redress scheme. The Council fined the company £673 to reflect the seven-week period that it was not part of a scheme.

Redress schemes give tenants and landlords independent adjudication of disputes. The Council monitors lettings agents and property managers to ensure that they are registered with a redress scheme.

St. Peter and St. Paul’s Ladies Friendship Circle The last meeting for 2018 was our usual Carol Service held in the church hall. Cynthia had put together a short informal service of readings and carols and we had the services of a visiting organist to accompany the singing. Several members of the group read readings and poems which really put us in the Christmas spirit. Afterwards we finished the evening with a cup of tea and delicious mince pies which several ladies had provided. Before we left we were all reminded of the New Year lunch which is to be held on 14th January at Beedles Lake Golf Club.

Our first meeting in 2019 was our New Year Lunch which was held at Beedles Lake Golf Club. It was a bright day when twenty two ladies enjoyed a delicious lunch and met their friends to recount their stories of what they had done at Christmas. We were all given the programme for the coming six months and this promises to be as interesting as usual with some favourite topics and some new ones. The next meeting of the group is on 28th January when it will be ‘Call my Bluff’. Anyone wishing to come to our meetings is very welcome, they are held on the second and fourth Monday each month at 7.30pm in the Church Hall.

Doreen Payne Traditional Christmas Fair We held this event in the Church Hall this year. It was exactly what it says traditional with the usual stalls, Bottle, Prize Every Time, Christmas Decorations (Mary Gamble’s usual stall) Quality Glass and China, Toys

and a table full of delicious home made cakes.

The Youth Group made and sold bacon butties followed by soup and a roll lunch.

There was a raffle with a £100 first prize.

The reward for this was that we raised £1349 for church funds.

Many thanks go to all who supported this in any way.

Christingles* were given out to all and their meaning explained. A retiring collection raised money for the work of the Children’s Society, who work with children who are in need and difficult circumstances throughout the land. And a very good time was had by all! * What is Christingle, what does it mean? The celebration is named after the Christingles that are lit during the service. Christingles are made from an orange (which represents the world), with a small candle in the top.

The Christingle is also decorated with red ribbon or tape to show God's love wrapped round the world, and four small sticks with some dried fruits or sweets to symbolise God’s bounty and the four seasons. The candle on the top symbolises Jesus, the Light of the World, who brings hope to the people in darkness. Christingle services throughout the land raise vital funds to help needy and homeless children, some of whom are facing Christmas alone. At six o’clock the church was again packed full of local people who’d come to our traditional Christmas Eve carol service of carols and bible readings.

About 250 people attended this service which somehow starts Christmas off ‘properly’ for many folk.

Many people also took the opportunity to remember a departed loved-one on our memory tree. A collection was made for the work of Shelter, who work with people who are homeless.

At 11.30am another congregation met to celebrate the first mass of Christmas and greet each other properly at the end with ‘Happy Christmas’!

The Sunday after Christmas the Fosse Team met for a joint service with over 100 people attending. It was a very joyful occasion followed by refreshments in the hall. The collection for the charity Shelter taken during Advent and the Christmas Services was £716 and the Christingle collection for the Children's Society was £319. The church was beautifully decorated for all of the above services, by our excellent team of flower arrangers.

The Case for a Midlife MOT A financial health check in your 40s or 50s could significantly improve your chances of a comfortable retirement.

Retirement is increasingly seen as a long journey to look forward to, not, as it once was, a relatively short period of life that spelt the end of the road. Today’s retirees are more busy, independent and curious than ever and have more time to settle into a life filled with endless possibilities.

But at a time when so much about retirement is improving, there is a cloud being cast: worry about how to afford the retirement we want. Many of us can expect to spend close to a third of our life in retirement, but without a long-term plan, we run the risk of outliving our financial security.

Progressive increases in the State Pension age, along with the ever-shifting goalposts on pension taxation and allowances, mean that some of us will find it more difficult to realise our retirement ambitions. And the fact that a defined contribution pension pot can be taken in a variety of different ways only serves to make the decision on how, and when, to retire even more complex. When is the best time to take our pension; and do we take it all, or just part of it? When should we access our tax-free entitlement?

These are the sort of questions which we will usually need to answer in our 60s or early 70s. Yet, many of us would benefit from examining our choices much earlier in life.

Regular inspection Financial planning should address a range of issues, such as how long we are prepared to keep working for, our predicted life expectancy, our State Pension entitlement, how much income our savings need to provide, and how much money we want to pass on to loved ones. We may also need to consider how much to have in reserve that could be used to pay for care.

Yet there is no natural trigger point during our working lives which encourages us to think about these issues, meaning that many of us will end up leaving it too late.

According to Michelle Cracknell, Chief Executive of The Pensions Advisory Service, there needs to be a much better way of supporting people in their mid-40s to mid-50s through an intervention intended ‘to reflect the fact that your retirement income is now your responsibility’.

Andrew Seager, Head of Service Development at Citizens Advice, says the key to increasing early engagement is to get people talking about pensions as a social norm, ‘like having a baby or starting work’. www.systontownnews.co.uk

Both support the introduction of a midlifeMOT, under which individuals would review their financial health at an age when it was still possible to take reparative action such as increasing pension contributions.

This idea has gained prominence since it was recommended by John Cridland’s Independent Review of the State Pension age: Smoothing the transition, which was published last year.

The report highlighted that a midlife MOT facilitated by employers and government could be a useful trigger to encourage people to take stock and make realistic choices about work, health and retirement.

‘The majority of online careers advice we have observed is targeted at young people, which is often not directly transferable to older people. As a first step, an online Mid-Life MOT could allow people to consider their existing plans, as well as provide signposting and guidance on where to get more help,’ says the report.

Cridland, who is a former director general of the Confederation of British Industry, proposes that this guidance is connected to financial advice.

“Once you have made up your mind on how you are going to spend your time and where, then you need financial advice,” he said. “I want to combine the two. I think this could be done with a diagnostic tool on the internet, quite a sophisticated one, that helps you through the decisionmaking tree and then connects you with advice.”

While details of the initiative are still to be finalised, some employers are already responding to the recommendations.

Aviva has announced it will be rolling out its midlife MOT service to employees aged 45 or over in 2019. Meanwhile, Legal & General, The Pension Advisory Service and Mercer have launched their own pilots.

Advisory note John Cridland’s report shines a light on the importance of engaging with retirement planning early. However, he agrees that, with the right interventions, there is scope to change behaviour. Your 40s and 50s is a time of life when you need to look under the bonnet, see what you’re spending your money on, and see if your retirement plans are on track.

Clive and Helen Are Worth Their Weight in Gold, Says TV Host

As Slimming World enters its 50th year, two Consultants from Syston are celebrating half a century of success for the organisation by meeting TV personality and presenter Rylan Clark-Neal.

Rylan, who shot to fame after appearing on hit show The X-Factor, co-hosted the annual Slimming World Awards with the organisation’s founder and chair Margaret MilesBramwell OBE. Margaret opened her first Slimming World group in 1969 and over the last 50 years the business has grown to become the UK's leading group-based weightmanagement organisation, today supporting nearly one million slimmers.

Clive Morgan, who runs a Slimming World group at The Syston & District Conservative Club, every Thursday at 3.30pm, 5.15pm and 7.00pm was delighted to get a chance to cuddle up to Rylan and said meeting the TV host was a wonderful way to round off a great year at Slimming World, as well as a brilliant way to lead into 2019 — Slimming World’s Golden Year: “I couldn’t be prouder of the members of the Syston groups. Not only have they lost fantastic amounts of weight throughout 2018 – with many of them hitting their target weights – they’ve also improved their health, boosted their confidence and are heading into 2019 with new healthy habits that will stay with them for life.

He said: “I met so many people who had lost incredible amounts of weight and made a huge difference to their lives. While the stories I heard were obviously very personal, the one thing they all had in common was how much support they received from their ‘Slimming World family’ and how so many of them were achieving their dreams. Every one of them spoke passionately about how they couldn’t have made those changes to eat more healthily and become more active without the support of their Consultant and group every week, so people like Clive and Helen are clearly worth their weight in gold.”

The Editor’s report on the Full Town Council Meeting held on Tuesday 18th December 2018 There were 10 councillors (Cllrs), one County Cllr and two members of the public, including Philip Bland, Chairman of South and East Leicestershire Action Group (SELAG).

A minute’s silence was held for Cllr Maureen Pacey.

The reflection was read by the Chairman: Cllr P. Henry.

Apologies were received from Cllrs K. Pacey, M. Carnal, S. Hampson, L. Towell, B. Singh.

There were no matters raised by the public.

A presentation was given by Mr Philip Bland; Chairman of SELAG to outline their position in opposing the proposed A46 Expressway. He explained the proposal that sees a road starting from south of Birmingham and joining the A46 north of Syston. SELAG believe there is a conflict between it being an expressway to move traffic or just a vehicle for building more houses.

They think there is an alternative by improving the junction to the M1/ M69 and the A46 by-pass to elevate the problem and prevent the need for more housing and damaging the countryside of Leicestershire. SELAG believe the city should sort out its housing problems and leave the county to deal with their problems of transport links. He said the cost could be around £2billion and no one states where this money is coming from. See SELAG.org. for more information.

Cllr E. Vardy, who is the lead Cllr on this at Charnwood Borough Councl (CBC) and who is also sitting on the county plan, welcomed Philip and thanked him for his views. He said that there had already been 17 months consultation, and over 500 people responded. He also agreed that thousands of people hadn’t responded so the Council assume they are ok with it. The proposal will be subject to further consultation in the future months/years. He explained the reason for the road being built has nothing to do with the development of A46, it is a new road to provide better links for commuters and housing will be south of the road.

Cllr P. Henry asked when the public enquiry would be, but he was told no date had been set as yet. Mr Bland said it maybe in four years time.

Chairman’s Announcements and Communications - The Chairman Cllr P. Henry thanked the event panel members, Ursula, and helpers on the day of the Christmas Event.

Police report -There were no police present so the report was not discussed.

County and Borough councillors C Cllr J. Poland explained the County’s Budget Proposals and that it talks about the pressure placed on the County Council (CC). Social care, Special Education Needs and Disability Needs. Tax rises of 3.9% will raise some revenue but it will still be difficult, and some difficult decisions will have to be made. He spoke about a review of CC funding and that it could bring better provision although there is no extra money, so, it will just be redistributed. He gave a Unitary proposals update, saying a letter received from local MPs stated they don’t support the plans and asked for it to be cease. Borough Councils had been working on it and after the letter they stopped but the County have continued to look into it.

It will go to full council in the summer, but doesn’t mean a change will happen as it needs an act of Parliament to approve.

Cllr T. Barkley - Spoke about the County provision of health being reviewed. In his Borough Council report he spoke about a pilot scheme for business rate retention, with the councils retaining a higher percentage and allow them to invest in infrastructure, children’s services and homeless support. He mentioned the Charnwood Sports Awards, which Syston resident Eleanor who won an award, featured in the last . He finished with explaining the Charnwood Budget for 2019-20.

Cllr E. Vardy spoke about the development of a scheme to help individuals who are starting up their own business by providing workshops to help beginning in January 2019.

All Minutes for full council and committees and EGM held on the 1st November, all agreed and approved.

Members questions - The Chairman received one from Cllr P. Knight regarding a capital spend and asked if a bid for motorcycle proof gates and a running track around Central Park be included. Cllr T. Barkley explained that they needed to find out if there is a need for a running track, so as to www.systontownnews.co.uk

justify it and wipe out the council’s reserves. The council would need to increase council tax in order to fund the running track.

Final draft Budget 2019/2020 - was agreed.

Draft business plan & Strategy for Syston - This had been sent out with minutes so not discussed on the night.

The Town Manager Mrs C. Voyce was thanked for all the hard work done in sorting it out. Cllr T. Barkley said it was a quality document and should now be put out for consultation for six weeks, he said it required input from councillors, businesses and public.

Approval for consultation would happen in January.

Town Managers report - This had been circulated and she updated members on a variety of items including the fact that the council now has five vacancies. She reminded members of meetings taking place in January.

THE JOURNAL OF SYSTON TOWN COUNCIL FEBRUARY 2019 written by Catherine Voyce A Tribute to Cllr Maureen Pacey In December 2018, Syston Town Council sadly lost one of its longserving and dedicated Councillors, Cllr Maureen Pacey. The main part of our Spotlight article is written as a tribute and remembrance of Maureen and the contribution she made to the town of Syston.

Maureen faced life with a determination to overcome any problems she met and was always affable, humorous, able to defuse moments of tension with a quip and a smile. She served Syston for 15 years and was involved on all committees and several working parties at Syston Town Council over the years. She was punctilious in her attendance at Council, committee and working party meetings, making a valued contribution to our town and Council.

Maureen was well known and liked in our community, she was involved in many civic events and supported her husband, Cllr Ken Pacey in his mayoral year at Charnwood Borough Council as his Consort, when they together undertook 451 engagements around the Borough as well as travelling to Zamosc in Poland, Schwabisch in Germany and Epinal in France. In addition, together they hosted 50 events at the Civic Suite at Loughborough Town Hall and welcomed 1741 visitors to the Mayor’s room. Maureen proved an excellent ambassador for the Borough of Charnwood in every way, at home and abroad. Many of the connections and friendships formed have endured over the years. She was also an honorary member of the Showman’s Guild.

Maureen had been married to Ken for 59 happy years, during which time they raised their family, who have provided, great support to Ken at this 32

difficult time. Maureen provided unwavering support to Ken, always, in their life together.

I think probably the words of our Local Member of Parliament, Ed Argar mirror my thoughts. “Maureen was approachable, easy to talk too, listened and acted in the best interests of the community and her family and many friends. She had a mischievous sense of humour and could be relied on to take a pragmatic and common-sense approach.”

We shall all miss Maureen greatly.

Someone so special will never be forgotten by our community, her many friends or her family.

May she rest in peace. Thank you Maureen for all you did.

Syston Town Council Welcome to Cllr Bobby Singh Syston Town Council welcomes Cllr Bobby Singh, representing St Peters Ward West, along with Cllrs Barkley, Branston, Carnall and Lucas.

Bobby Singh is a British born Sikh historian, writer and documentary filmmaker who studied Business Management and Economics in England.

His interest in Indian History, AngloSikh Heritage and Culture has allowed him to interact with the Indian/Sikh Diaspora all over the world. He has attended major International Sikh and Indian conferences and has given numerous lectures on the theme of Indian Partition of 1947, Indian Soldiers in the World Wars and on the AngloSikh Wars in Canada, France, United States, Scotland, Singapore, India, Sweden, Italy, Australia, Norway, Malaysia and Pakistan.

Bobby Singh Bansal has been the recipient of numerous accolades and awards. In 2010, his maiden publication, The Lion’s Firanghis – Europeans at the Court of Lahore, which charts the careers of European officers to the court of Maharaja Ranjit Singh in the 19th century, was www.systontownnews.co.uk

received positively by critics and audiences worldwide.

His forthcoming documentaries Indian Soldiers in the Great War and Legacy of the Sikh Empire with his upcoming publication, The Punjab Chiefs - Aristocratic Families of Northern India is releasing in 2020.

Bobby is looking forward to working with Syston Town Council and the community and is keen to play a visible and active role in Syston’s future.

Forthcoming Events Syston Town Council Citizen and Syston Town Council Young Citizen of the Year Award Syston residents are invited to nominate fellow citizens for the Syston Town Council Citizen of the Year Award. The Awards will be presented at the Chairman’s Civic Reception to be held on Friday 5th April 2019.

The Awards are to recognise outstanding contributions to the local town and community during the past year or over a number of years or have performed an outstanding achievement or act of heroism. A full list of criteria can be found on the Syston Town Council website.

Current joint holders are Bob and Meg Hendry.

The Young Citizen of the Year Award is a new initiative and is aimed at young people aged 18 years or under.

Councillor Recruitment Evening If you have the passion and drive to help Syston and its community, then please share it with us; you can do something positive for Syston and play an important role in the key developments in the town. You are invited to our Councillor Recruitment Evening Wednesday 13th February from 6.00pm to 8.00pm at the Queen Victoria public house, High Street, Syston.

This is an open informal session where you can meet serving Councillors and the Town Manager to find out how you can become involved.

Qualifying criteria: You must live or work in Syston and are aged 18 years or over and either a UK or qualifying commonwealth citizen or a citizen of the Irish Republic or a citizen of another Member State of the EU. Put the Fun in Run – Thrussington Fun Run Is Back!

Saturday 9 March at 2pm Last year Thrussington Fun Run saw over 300 people of all ages enter its race – taking runners across country, through ditches and over haybales! It raised over £2,000 for two charities: Thrussington School and Jac Bach – a children’s charity supporting children with life changing illnesses.

This year the fun run is again supporting these charities. We are therefore very grateful to our main sponsors: Charles Bentley & Son Limited, Raylec Electrical Limited, Bentons Estate Agents and also for the use of the field by kind permission of The Rudkin Family. This means that all money raised will go to our worthy causes.

Thrussington Fun Run has proved a very popular event. It is run over 5 races, first race at 2pm and is open to all ages.

Race 4 - school year 7 – 17 years of age Race 5 - adults and VET 50+ Children school year 6 and under run one lap of the three-quarters of a mile course. School year 7 up to adults two laps of the three-quarter miles course (1 ½ miles). Everyone who completes the course receives a medal and post race treats. Hot and cold refreshments will be available in the village hall prior to the prize giving. Affiliated (those who belong to a club) and unaffiliated trophies for each race.

Don’t be fooled serious runners this is not too easy for you, it’s very fast and furious, but it is great fun. In race four and five there is also a £10 cash prize for the fastest runner who beats the course record of 9 mins and 22 seconds… Now there’s a challenge!

If you are new to running or an old hand; very young or very old; give it a go and join the fun as an individual or enter your family as a team or round up friends from school and go for the school team trophy also perhaps use the event to get sponsorship for your runners and raise some funds for your club or school. Entry costs £5 per person and closes at 7pm on Wednesday 6th March.

A detailed search of old minute books and records has shown that Arthur lived in Sandford Road and played for the club from the mid1920s to the mid-1930s. However this has failed to reveal why the ball was presented, as have conversations I have had with older members of the club. The Lewin family were prominent in the club from its formation in 1904 up to WW2 and any new information about Arthur and the ball would be very welcomed.
